16 Best Things To Do In Emerald Isle, North Carolina
The gem on the Crystal Coast is tailor-made for family time.
Emerald Isle, North Carolina, confesses its obvious charms—brilliant blue-green waters, a verdant maritime forest, and lush marshes—in its name. From its place on the Crystal Coast, an 85-mile-long barrier island also known as the Southern Outer Banks, its beauty is apparent. But Emerald Isle's most enduring magic reveals itself a bit more slowly.
Although it's a short drive from the mainland hustle, Emerald Isle is the kind of place that inspires a slowdown. Here, fat-tire bicycles seem to outnumber cars, hours are measured in sunscreen applications and tugs on fishing lines, and island nightlife belongs to nesting sea turtles. In other words, there's no place that's built for families quite like this gem on the Crystal Coast. Here are the top things to do to enjoy the slower pace in Emerald Isle.
Vacation Like A Local
When it comes to experiencing the town like a year-round resident, renting a beach house is your top bet. For extended families committed to togetherness, area real estate companies (such as Emerald Isle Realty and Bluewater Vacation Rentals and Real Estate ) plus websites like Airbnb and Vrbo offer hundreds of spacious beachfront houses—some with as many as 10 or 12 bedrooms and a pool. If you are traveling with a smaller crew, more modest cottages, duplexes, and condos are available. You can also find homes with elevators to help accommodate people with mobility challenges. There are pet-friendly properties too.
Play Outside
Emerald Isle's over 12 miles of beaches are the stars of the show. Even if you're not staying in an oceanfront rental, spending the day on the shore is easy because the area has plenty of public beach access points. Head to The Point on the westernmost tip of the island to bask in wide banks of warm sand; it's the ideal spot for shelling, walking, and watching the sunset.
Cruise Through Town
You can leave the car parked in your driveway and cruise around town on two wheels. Bring your own bicycles, or rent them from family-owned Hwy 58 Bikes , which will deliver them right to your doorstep. Set out to cycle along the 11-mile paved bike path that runs from the small town of Indian Beach to The Point.
Cast A Line
Send the fishers in your group down to Bogue Inlet Pier, where they can buy bait and tackle on-site, or you can treat them to a chartered ocean trip with Emerald Isle Adventures . Surf fishing is also popular. Cast a line from the sand at one of the beach access points or find a spot at Bogue Inlet.
Grab A Paddle
Gather your group for a guided paddle board tour through Bogue Sound’s marshes and estuaries with Emerald Isle Paddle Tours . Go on a half-day kayak or paddle board excursion with Hot Wax Surf Shop to the Cedar Point Recreational Area in Croatan National Forest where you may see deer, bald eagles, or dolphins. Paddle one of the trails through Hammocks Beach State Park , or from April through October, take the ferry to the park to enjoy its beaches, hike, fish, or watch for local wildlife. To explore the waterways independently, rent kayaks or paddle boards to enjoy other paddling trails in the area. If you're looking for something that's a little more peaceful, try yoga on the water with Emerald Isle Paddle Tours .
Head To The Water
For a little more thrill, grab a surfboard and learn to ride the waves with surfing lessons from Hot Wax Surf Shop . Get group or personalized instruction that starts with basic skills on the beach and then moves into the waves. Rent a soft-top board for the afternoon or day at South Swell Surf Shop .
Fill Up On Fresh Catches
Seafood is king here, and you will find so many ways to savor it. Meet on the pier for a family meal at Surf's Up Grill & Bar . (Don't miss out on the grouper sandwich.) For date night, start with a cocktail from Kathryn's Bistro & Martini Bar , which serves more than 30 variations of the classic drink. Then pop down the street to Caribsea for dinner; the fish is local and sustainably sourced. At the Fish Hut Grill, the seafood is the star. Savor fish or ahi poke tacos, fish bites, smoked tuna salad, or fried whole fish. Add yellowfin tuna or mahi mahi to a salad or make it a sandwich.
If you're in town on a summer Thursday, head to the weekly outdoor concert series, EmeraldFest , for live music. Afterward, wander over to Flipperz Family Bar & Grill to order oysters and apps plus a cold beer.
In Emerald Isle, worries wash out with the tides and hospitality always includes making room for one more fishing pole on the pier. It's a place where you can invite the whole family knowing that all of them—cousins, toddlers, grandparents, and everyone in between—will fit right in.

Wide, sandy beaches, beautiful state parks, and plenty of classic family beach vacation activities are just a few things you’ll find when looking for the best things to do in Emerald Isle, North Carolina!
Though my family tends to vacation in nearby Atlantic Beach , the minuscule nature of the towns on and around the delightful Bogue Banks barrier island means that virtually every trip includes a stop in Emerald Isle, too.
With its gorgeous setting and laid-back beach town vibes, figuring out what to do in Emerald Isle on any given day is a downright relaxing challenge.
While we’ve mostly kept this Emerald Isle travel guide centered on the town itself, some of the other big Crystal Coast attractions snuck in–but that’s par for the course when vacationing along these beautiful beaches in Eastern North Carolina.

Spend a day with your toes in the sand at The Point.
Located at the far western end of Bogue Banks, The Point is one of the biggest–and prettiest–beaches in the area.
Home to some of the most beloved activities in Emerald Isle, The Point is the perfect place for a beach day, and no trip to town is complete without spending some time here.
With a permit , you can drive on this beach at certain times as well.
… and stay for sunset.
The sunsets are beautiful all over the Crystal Coast, but as the beaches on Bogue Banks typically face south, you’ll mostly be watching the sunset over the dunes, not the water.
That’s still lovely, of course, but if you’re looking for a classic beach sunset to admire while you have your toes in the sand, The Point is the place to be!
Pay a visit to the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier.
Whether you want to fish, enjoy views of the waves, or watch the sunset, the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier is one of the best places to visit in Emerald Isle!
Family-owned since 1971, this pier is a beloved local business and a staple of beachgoers for generations.
The pier is open seasonally, but the on-site restaurant, Surf’s Up , offers casual seafood, burgers, and more with water views year-round.
Explore Hammocks Beach State Park.
Kayaking, paddleboarding, and untouched barrier islands (especially gorgeous Bear Island) are the stars of the show at Hammocks Beach State Park , located directly across the sound from The Point.
Don’t want to paddle yourself to Bear Island from the mainland?
A passenger ferry will deliver to Bear Island as well, and there are also peaceful, quiet trails throughout the park.
Though there is a charge for the ferry, the entrance to Hammocks Beach State Park is free.
Go for a walk in the woods.
Want to give your skin a break from the constant sun and enjoy a bit of time in the shade?
Emerald Isle Woods Park is a laid-back, shady, 41-acre escape located right in town.
Walking trails, a birding trail, and a disc gold course are all available at this peaceful spot.
Check out the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.
The North Carolina Aquarium is involved in enormous amounts of conservation work–and what better time to learn about the fragility of our oceans than when you’re already visiting one?
Pine Knoll Shores is practically next door to Emerald Isle and is also home to one branch of the North Carolina Aquarium.
The aquarium is beautiful and interesting, and I credit it with teaching me a lot about the ocean, marine life, and the local ecosystem as a child.
Go surfing in Emerald Isle, NC!
Hoping to learn how to surf… or just enjoy some North Carolina waves?
Surfing is popular in Emerald Isle, especially from August through December.
The area surrounding the Bogue Inlet Pier is a popular spot, but for more detailed advice, head to one of Emerald Isle’s local surf shops.
If you’re not experienced, Hot Wax Surf Shop and South Swell Surf Shop both offer surf lessons/camps in addition to rentals!
Drive across the island to Fort Macon State Park.
While Emerald Isle and Fort Macon are set on polar opposite ends of Bogue Banks, they’re also only a bit over a 20-minute drive apart.
Visiting one of the most popular state parks in North Carolina definitely belongs on your list of what to do in Emerald Isle!
At Fort Macon State Park , you can tour the restored 19th-century fort, hike a nature trail, or simply head directly to the beach to enjoy some sun and waves at the (beautiful and free to access) beach inside the park.
Go kayaking, fishing, or beyond at Cedar Street Park.
Featuring a lowkey public access point to Bogue Sound and a charming dock, Cedar Street Park is one of the best places to visit in Emerald Isle if you’re looking to do a little fishing or put your kayak or SUP in the water.
Parking is very limited, so if you’re visiting during the summer (especially on a weekend), arrive as early as you can.
Get 3-for-1-family fun at Professor Hacker’s Lost Treasure Golf and Raceway.
Mini-golf, bumper boats, and go-karts all in one place make Professor Hacker’s Lost Treasure Golf and Raceway a great place to spend a day near Emerald Isle, NC!
While I will never quite be able to warm up to this place because it’s not Jungleland (if you know, you know), it is a great place to let kids get their beans out when everyone needs a break from the waves.
Shop for local food and souvenirs at the Salty Air Open Market.
Located about a 15-minute drive from town, between Emerald Isle and Swansboro, sits the delightful Salty Air Open Market.
Featuring local products ranging from cheese to kombucha to crafts to live music, the Salty Air Open Market is one of those places to will keep you coming back again and again.

Zip around a go-kart track at Fun World Motorsports.
This popular local go-kart track is one of the top places to visit in town–especially for families visiting Emerald Isle with kids!
Fun World Motorsports has a reputation for fast cars on an engaging track, perfect for all ages.
Keep in mind that this Emerald Isle attraction is cash-only, but there is an ATM on-site.
Take a day trip to Beaufort, NC.
Located about a 30-minute drive away (without traffic–avoid rush hour on the bridges for best results!), exploring the charming town of Beaufort, NC is one of the best things to do near Emerald Isle.
As one of the oldest towns in North Carolina, Beaufort is packed with history and charm.
Growing up, no trip to the Crystal Coast was complete without at least one visit to Beaufort!
While you’re there, shop the boutiques on Front Street, learn a bit of history at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, see if you can spot the wild ponies across Taylor Creek, and grab lunch.
Beaufort is also a great place to use as a jumping-off point for visiting Cape Lookout and/or Shackleford Banks–more on that below.
… Or a much longer day trip to Cape Lookout.
At more than 2 hours away by the time you add in drive time and a ferry, visiting Cape Lookout from Emerald Isle is a bit of a daunting task, and perhaps not at the top of your list if you’re traveling with small kids.
That being said–Cape Lookout National Seashore is one of the best places to visit near Emerald Isle, and it’s worth the effort if you’re up for a long day!
Be sure to climb the lighthouse itself for absolutely magnificent views.
(Note: Sadly, the lighthouse is currently closed for renovations, check the NPS website for updates.)
You can also enjoy the bright, shallow water on the beach that is more reminiscent of the Mediterranean than most of the beaches on the Crystal Coast, partake in some fantastic shelling, and keep an eye out for wild horses across the water on Shackleford Banks!
Enjoy a Crystal Coast classic at Salty Pirate Water Park.
Salty Pirate Water Park is one of the staple attractions in Emerald Isle (or really along the whole Crystal Coast) for families, I have many treasured childhood memories of slipping and sliding down these water slides!
The park’s wide, classic concrete water slides are fantastic fun for all ages, and have been entertaining families since my mom visited Emerald Isle as a girl!
Today, the park also offers more modern slides and attractions like a kiddie pool for those so inclined.
While the Salty Pirate Water Park does have a website , for updated information on opening hours and weather-related events during the season, their Facebook page is a great place to stay informed.
Emerald Isle’s location along a long, thin barrier island means that most hotels are on or near the ocean, though since this is such a small town, there are only so many to choose from!
We typically stay in a family home or occasionally a rental property when visiting the Crystal Coast, which is common among repeat visitors.
There are lots of gorgeous beachfront homes for rent in Emerald Isle over the summer (options like this beautiful property are incredibly popular).
That being said, you’ll generally need a family or group with you to justify the price tag (also, be sure to book as far in advance as you can–annual visitors snap up the listings quickly).
For hotels, both the beachfront Islander Hotel and Resort and the spacious Light House Suites (located a short walk from the water) are excellent options boasting great reviews.
No matter where you stay, you won’t be far from the best things to do in Emerald Isle, NC!

Hello!! Love your article, I was curious where the swing is located that is the main picture? Thank you:)
Thanks, Brianna! I took that photo just a few steps after hitting the sand when walking out to The Point. 🙂
Remember The Water Boggan and Lighthouse Golf? So many memories of EI.
The Salty Pirate is the renamed version of The Water Boggan! It lives on. Wonderful memories there. 🙂
We always played our mini-golf over at Jungleland (RIP), but I remember driving by Lighthouse long ago!

Discover Emerald Isle and the Crystal Coast

What's in This Article:
Emerald Isle, NC, is one of five coastal towns that make up the Crystal Coast on Bogue Island. Here’s what to do during your coastal getaway.
Though not as well-known as the Outer Banks, Emerald Isle, NC , and the entire Crystal Coast are gaining a reputation for being the new “coastal getaway” in a state well known for its beautiful beaches.
Referred to as the Southern Outer Banks , Emerald Isle has everything anyone could want in a beach town—but I love it more for what it doesn’t have. There is limited commercial sprawl throughout the 21 miles of Crystal Coast, and chain stores are almost nonexistent.
Both the water and the landscape give Emerald Isle its name. Photo by Jessica James
Instead, family-run businesses provide the necessary services, and large swaths of tropical mangrove trees give you the feeling you’re visiting a nature preserve.
Enjoy Sun, Sand, and Surf
Emerald Isle, NC, is one of five coastal towns that make up the Crystal Coast on Bogue Island. If you’re going to this ocean getaway, you probably want to spend a good bit of your time enjoying the water.
Whether you enjoy swimming, surfing, kayaking, water sports, or just enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the ocean, Emerald Isle’s 12 miles of beach offers something for everyone’s tastes.
Shelling on beaches is always a treat for those who enjoy beachcombing or walking. Photo by Jessica James
Although I enjoy staying in an oceanfront rental when I can, it’s not a problem in Emerald Isle if you don’t. The community offers public beach accesses along the coastline, some of which have picnic pavilions, playgrounds, volleyball courts, and boat and kayak launches.
Sunrise or Sunset? Take Your Pick At Emerald Isle
If you look at Emerald Isle beach on a map, you’ll see it faces south, not east, due to the curve of Bogue Island. I highly recommend visiting The Point at the western tip of Emerald Isle, where you can catch a sunrise over the water or a spectacular sunset—take your pick!
Sunsets on the beach are a free show each day when you visit Emerald Isle, NC. Photo by Jessica James
You get to The Point through Coast Guard Road in Emerald Isle. Parking is limited, but the view makes it worth the time to visit.
Pro Tip : Taking your pet on vacation? Since I have a new rescue dog, I was happy to discover plenty of pet-friendly accommodations in Emerald Isle, and leashed dogs are permitted on the beach. (I saw many happily chasing balls into the surf as well).
Emerald Isle is Bike-Friendly
A unique aspect of Emerald Isle is that walking, biking—and even golf carts—seem more popular for getting around than cars. You can bring your bikes or rent them from family-owned Hwy 58 Bikes . (Bonus: They will even deliver them to your door).
In addition to two newer bike trails that take you down Emerald Drive and Coast Guard Road, there is a scenic 11-mile paved bike path that runs from the small town of Indian Beach to The Point of Emerald Isle.
If Golf Carts are more your style, you can find four- and six-seaters at Emerald Isle Golf Carts .
Going Fishing
Emerald Isle is well-known for surf, pier, and charter boat fishing for those whose perfect vacation day involves fishing.

Generations of families have also fished from the landmark Bogue Inlet Pier. The pier was built in the 1950s. Locals say you can expect to catch anything from speckled trout and king mackerel to wahoo and red drum.

I don’t fish, but the 1000-foot pier is still an iconic place to visit. Some of the best big saltwater catches along the East Coast have taken place from the dock. It’s fun to see the many generations of families teaching their children how to cast.

Pro Tip : Parking is always free for fishermen, but it is $20 on Friday, Saturday and Sundays during the summer months if you want to visit the pier’s beach. It’s a great place to spend the day because you can find shade under the dock and a great restaurant on site.
The Rainy Day Plan
If you wake up to rain on your beach vacation, there’s still plenty to do that will entertain the entire family.
I had the opportunity to tour the North Carolina Aquarium in nearby Pine Knoll Shores. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique look at life “under the sea.”

The aquarium has a sea turtle nursery and features a rare all-white turtle saved through their efforts. “Nimbus” has become quite a star with visitors and took the time to swim by me when I was there.

Shopping on Emerald Isle
There are plenty of boutiques and quaint shops in Emerald Isle. However, if you’re looking for a truly unique shopping experience, Emerald Plantation is a must for your bucket list.

You will find everything from unique coastal gifts, clothing boutiques, shoes, books, and toys to a general country store with everything you didn’t know you needed.

Pro Tip : Make sure you bring some quarters so you can feed the sea turtles! You’ll find the sea turtle-feeding station behind the fountain near Rucker Johns restaurant. This activity has been a favorite stop for generations of Emerald Isle visitors.
Emerald Isle is a Beach Combers Paradise
I’m one of those people who love to walk on the beach early in the morning looking for shells.

Hungry Yet?
One of the reasons I love going to coastal towns is to eat seafood, and you will find plenty of restaurants on Emerald Isle that offer delicious coastal fare.
I enjoyed the charm and food at The Trading Post in Emerald Isle, and I’m not the only one. The restaurant has won awards for its signature shrimp-n-grits dish.
