14 Best Things To Do In Beautiful Venice, Florida, Plus Where To Eat And Stay

  • United States

Venice, Florida, is a small city located along southwest Florida’s Gulf of Mexico coast, south of Sarasota. It has a vibrant downtown district with unique shops, restaurants, and an area known as Centennial Park.

The downtown is designated as a “Main Street” district and has been the site of extensive improvements in recent years. Sidewalks were expanded and landscaping added in 2019. The district covers three major through streets: Tampa Avenue, West Venice Avenue, and Miami Avenue. Following West Venice Avenue takes you all the way to the beach.

September 2022 brought Hurricane Ian to southwest Florida. Despite being  one of the state’s most destructive storms ever , the  beaches  and the rest of the attractions mentioned below are intact and ready for visitors.

Whether you’re looking for art, food, or beach activities, Venice has a lot to offer. Here are the best things to do in Venice, plus where to eat and stay.

Things To Do In Venice

1. search for shark teeth at caspersen beach.

The beach at Venice is billed as The Shark Tooth Capital Of The World . Teeth big and small are found along the shoreline, particularly in the area known as Caspersen Beach. It’s not that there are more sharks in the waters off Venice, but because the quirky currents in the Gulf of Mexico wash more up on the shore here. Beachgoers can usually be spotted bent over, carefully eyeing the tide line for teeth and shells.

Pro Tip: Visit in April for the Venice Sharks Tooth Festival .

2. Shop At Earth Treasures

A must-visit shop downtown is Earth Treasures on West Miami Avenue. Owners Donald and Draeanne Rivette buy and sell shark teeth, and may have the most extensive collection in Florida. During our visit to the shop, Don held out the huge megalodon teeth that are millions of years old. Megalodon’s teeth are rare finds. Most teeth are much smaller, and black or gray in color.

3. Venice Main Street

Sharks are such an attraction to the area that the local business organization, Venice Main Street, has positioned 10 miniature bronze shark statues around the downtown business district. Kids are encouraged to go on a scavenger hunt to find them all. To help, there is a map on the Main Street website .

Located in Sarasota County, Venice has long lived in the shadow of Sarasota. It was known as a sleepy beach town until the 1980s when changes started being made. The Venice Main Street nonprofit was established to help revitalize historic downtown Venice. Today, that area of town is walkable, inviting, and energetic. There are few vacancies among the shops and storefronts along the downtown main streets.

4. Venice Audubon Rookery Park

Venice Audubon Rookery Park is located south of downtown. During peak migrating season in the winter, the rookery is populated by birds from all over Florida, the U.S., and Canada. Nesting season is from December to May when you have the best birdwatching opportunities.

Bring a camera with a zoom lens if you have one and binoculars. Admission to the rookery is free.

5. Take In A Baseball Spring Training Game

Venice is the spring training home of the National League’s Atlanta Braves. The team is in residence from mid-February to the end of March. The Braves play in CoolToday Park , located south of downtown Venice. Games attract a large following of locals and fans from the Atlanta area.

6. Venice Train Depot

Venice was the winter home of the Ringling Brothers’ Barnum and Bailey Circus from 1960 to 1992. Many former performers still live in the Venice area. All that’s left of the circus is a railcar parked in the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot on East Venice Avenue.

7. Monty Andrews Arboretum

For those who enjoy flowers and plants, the Monty Andrews Arboretum is located in West Blalock Park, near downtown. The park covers four-and-a-half acres and has a gazebo that is often the focal point of local outdoor events. There are more than 80 species of trees and palms in the park, and more trees are added on a regular basis. There are four life-sized sculptures of Florida native wildlife: the Florida panther, a sea turtle, a manatee, and a tarpon.

8. Clyde Butcher Venice Gallery & Studio

Venice is home base for noted Florida photographer Clyde Butcher . His studio is located in a commercial district, on Warfield Street, east of downtown. Here, Butcher works with an oversized enlarger to create the huge black-and-white prints he is noted for. Finished prints by him and his wife Niki are on display and for sale.

9. Yoga Classes On Venice Beach

Venice Beach is active with attractions for both locals and visitors. There are daily yoga classes with Elin . These classes are free. Just bring water and a blanket. Elin’s classes are held next to the lifeguard stand at the Venice beach pavilion. There are other classes by Toby and other instructors at the north jetty on Casey Key, at Nokomis, and on Manasota Key.

Pro Tip: Beaches along the southwest Florida coast are often plagued by red tide during warm months. Foul-smelling and fish-killing, the tides have become a regular occurrence off the gulf coast. Before booking your beach vacation, consult the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for the status of red tide in beach areas.

10. Brohard Paw Park

Don’t forget to bring Fido to the beach. The only dog-friendly area on the beach is Brohard Paw Park . Dogs are allowed off-leash, free to run the sand and frolic in the surf. Waste disposal stations are available, so pick up after your pet.

11. Venice Fishing Pier

Venice Fishing Pier is located near Sharkey’s restaurant. It runs 720 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico and is a popular location for fishing and watching sunsets. 12. Cultural Campus

Venice’s Cultural Campus on Nokomis Avenue (aka East Blalock Park ) features the public library , the museum , the arts center , and a community center . It will soon be home to “Old Betsy,” a 1926 LaFrance fire engine that was one of the first things purchased by the city after it was incorporated.

13. Ideal Classic Cars

Old-time car buffs will love Ideal Classic Cars on South Tamiami Trail. Dozens of old, restored cars and trucks are on display and for sale. This is an actual private dealership, not an attraction, but visitors are welcome to come in and browse around the immaculately restored relics.

14. Nokomis Beach Drum Circle

Every Saturday and Wednesday evening, dozens of drummers show up at Casey Key in Nokomis for the Nokomis Beach Drum Circle . Normally held on the beach just before sunset, it was moved under a pavilion because of the threat of rain the night I was there. The drums attract spectators and even dancers. Depending on the weather, it usually draws a large crowd.

11 Best Things to Do in Venice, Florida

Written by Michael Law Updated Mar 24, 2023

Florida is full of interesting places to visit, and Venice is certainly one of them. Although there's no Grand Canal or palaces slowly sinking into the sea here, what you will find is a tidy, small town with a bit of an Italian flair.

A cute downtown that is wonderfully walkable replete with small independent shops, along with wonderful gardens and an abundance of shade trees, make this a place where you can easily lose an afternoon on a patio with a good friend.

And the beaches — we can't forget about the beaches! Venice has an amazing assortment of wonderful beaches within the city limits that are both fun to explore and laze about on.

Plan your Venice vacation with our list of the top things to do in Venice, Florida.

1. Look for Shark Teeth on Caspersen Beach

2. soak up the scene at the venice fishing pier, 3. enjoy time in the sun at brohard south & north beaches, 4. hit the sand at venice beach, 5. stroll through historic downtown, 6. shop at the venice farmers market, 7. stop by ideal classic cars, 8. south jetty beach, 9. monty andrews arboretum, 10. venice theatre, 11. venice area audubon rookery, map of things to do in venice, florida, venice, fl - climate chart.

Caspersen Beach

Few things could be more enjoyable and fun for a family than walking down the beach on the hunt for prehistoric shark teeth. Venice is blessed with many fantastic beaches where these treasures wash up; however, it's Caspersen Beach where the majority of them seem to be found. This is local lore; there could be other beaches that are better, but they aren't saying!

Located at the south end of Venice, Caspersen Beach is unique for its variety of shorelines. Some areas are lovely, with white sand stretching back to small scrub trees, while other areas are rocky and rough, not at all suitable for lounging under an umbrella. What you most definitely won't find are mansions and high-rises. This is a beach, for the most part, in its original natural form.

Here's a tip: Stop by one of the local beach shops and get your crew outfitted with a special sand scoop that will help you filter out the teeth and other interesting shells from the sand. This implement will greatly increase your chances of success.

Venice Fishing Pier

There are few better ways to see the beaches of Venice than from 700 feet out to sea on the Venice Fishing Pier. This impressive structure is the third pier installed in this location since 1966. Unlike many other piers located throughout Florida, the Venice Fishing Pier is free.

Gaze out at the ocean, catch a sunset, or try your luck with the denizens of the deep lurking below the pier. Catches here are frequent and fun. Species you'll have a chance at include grouper, redfish, and snapper; other species are available depending on the season. Check with Papa's Bait Shop on the pier for the latest news. Don't have fishing gear but want to try? Don't worry, Papa's will outfit you with everything you'll need for a day of fun. Another great reason to fish here? You don't need a license.

After you've walked along this top tourist attraction, a popular pastime is to snag an oceanfront table at the iconic Sharkey's on the Pier restaurant . Here, you can dine on the freshest catches of the sea while gazing out at the incredible Gulf of Mexico vista.

South Brohard Beach

As you stroll along or cast your line from the Venice Pier, the beaches to your left and right are two of the best beaches in Venice. The appropriately named Brohard South and Brohard North beaches stretch for miles in either direction and have long been favorites of Venice visitors and residents.

Soft, white sand with crystal-clear water coupled with the added benefit of the Venice Fishing Pier and Sharkey's On the Pier restaurant make a day at the beach here hard to beat. Extensive free parking is just back from the beach, so lugging your beach gear to the sand is an easy exercise. Grab lunch at Sharkey's or bring your own gear for a beach picnic at one of the nearby shelters.

Both beaches are spectacular, if you want a livelier scene, head to Brohard North, if you crave a bit of solitude or a quieter experience, make the longer trek to Brohard South. Beach walkers love both beaches for the seemingly endless miles of coastline. For a walk that is a bit more urban, with homes and condos, head north, where you'll pass by Venice municipal beach. For a more natural experience, head south — eventually you'll end up at Caspersen Beach.

Venice Beach

Few cities in the world can boast about having a fantastic beach right at the end of their main streets; however, Venice is one of them. Only half a mile from the lovely historic downtown along the delightful West Venice street, with its towering shade trees, you'll emerge at the beach.

Ample free parking and wonderful facilities make a day here with the family or friends easy and fun. Grab your gear and walk out onto the beach, where you'll find plenty of space to set up for a fun afternoon of sun, sand, and surf. Dive in and enjoy the clear, warm waters while lifeguards keep an eye on you and your family.

If you've packed a picnic, set up the food and treats at one of the picnic shelters, and chow down on a tasty snack while sitting in your sand chair. Or, if that sounds like too much work, stroll over to the concession and have them cook something tasty up for you.

Watch the athletic types play a game of beach volleyball on one of the two sand courts, or join in — the games are usually pretty friendly, and newbies are always welcome.

Downtown Venice

Downtown Venice is a reminder of what Old Florida used to be like. Many buildings date from the 1930s, when the area was laid out by master city planner John Nolen. Stately palm trees and oaks with hanging moss line the downtown streets and give the place a genteel air that encourages lingering.

A wide variety of locally owned shops line the streets, and it's easy to pick up a new dress, grab a coffee, and then get your hair done all in one easy trip.

Some notable buildings in downtown worth checking out include the Triangle Inn building dating from 1927, the Venice train station from 1920, and the San Marco Hotel from 1926. Other buildings from this era can also be found by picking up a self-guided map at the information kiosk in Centennial Park, or signing up for a docent-led sightseeing tour through Venice Florida Tours.

The centerpiece of downtown is Centennial Park, with its wonderful gardens, shady walkways, children's splash pad, and extensive free parking.

Fresh market produce

Looking for the freshest ingredients for that summer salad or specialty cheese for afternoon snacks? If this is the case, make a beeline to the Venice Farmers Market. Held every Saturday, it starts at 8am in the City Hall parking lot.

Approximately 40 booths operate each Saturday, and offerings include the freshest fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, nuts, and baked goods. However, it's not all about food. Other vendors sell artwork, jewelry, fresh flowers, sandals, pet supplies, and much more.

This popular thing to do in Venice runs year-round, and has become a popular Saturday morning pastime for many people that involves purchasing fresh-baked goods and a coffee while perusing the items on offer.

Ideal Classic Cars

Fans of perfectly preserved and restored cars should plan a pit stop at Ideal Classic Cars. This interesting place to visit will get your heart racing as you stroll around the vintage cars imagining what it would be like behind the wheel. And should your pocketbook match your desires, all the cars in Ideal Classic's museum are for sale. If you see what you like, you can buy it on the spot.

A majority of the cars are from the 50s, 60s and 70s and include classic collector cars like Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, and Chargers. The museum is always changing, with cars coming and going, so true aficionados will want to make more than one visit.

The museum is free to enter; just answer a quick four question survey at the front entrance.

South Jetty Beach

Although the north and south Brohard beaches draw most visitors and have the easiest access, those that crave true solitude know to head to South Jetty Beach. This perfect patch of sand, located adjacent to Humphris Park, is quiet and usually deserted. Not only will you most likely have the place to yourself, you'll also have fantastic views of the South Jetty and good views southwards towards the Venice Fishing Pier.

Acquiring solitude does take a bit of effort. You'll need to walk about five to seven minutes from Humphris Park along the shoreline to get to the beach, but once you are here, you'll be glad you made the effort. Bring everything you need. The beach has no services; however, cold drinks and light meals are available at the concession in Humphris Park.

Coconut palm tree

For a small place, Venice has wonderful gardens located throughout the city, especially in the downtown area and at West Blalock Park, where the Monty Andrews Arboretum is located. Take a stroll through this well-laid-out park and look up at the trees. Over 100 trees and palms are located throughout the property, all with descriptive plaques providing information on what you see before and above you.

The Monty Andrews Arboretum is spread out over 4.5 acres, with pleasant walkways suitable for walking, jogging, or pushing a stroller. Grab some takeout at one of the nearby restaurants, and stroll through the park under the shade of large trees. Picnic tables and benches encourage quiet contemplation, and the butterfly garden is a photographer's delight.

In addition to all the trees and other interesting plant life, the arboretum has a number of life-sized sculptures of a manatee, Florida panther, sea turtle, and tarpon. These beautiful works of art were created by the renowned artist Thomas Prochnow.

Venice Theatre

The cultural heartbeat of Venice exists at the Venice Theatre and has done so since the early 1950s. It started out small, but today the Venice Theatre, with its four-million-dollar budget, is the largest community theater project in the country.

An ever-changing roster of events, including plays, tribute bands, comedians, musicals, and other performers, lights up the stage in this historical building throughout the year. Always wanted to be up on stage? Well, here's your chance. The Venice Theatre offers a variety of classes to get you on your way, with the ultimate goal of having your name on the marquee.

A heron on a picnic shelter at the Venice Area Audubon Rookery

For a bit of nature during your vacation or for an educational experience the whole family will enjoy, consider the Venice Area Audubon Rookery. A small lake attracts nesting birds. Some of the species you'll have a good chance of seeing include three types of egrets: great egrets, snowy egrets, and cattle egrets.

Herons also call this rookery home. Point your camera and hope to snap a shot of a stately great blue heron, a sometimes elusive green heron, and the spectacular tricolored heron.

The best place to photograph the birds is from the pavilion at the water's edge. This is a small but free attraction in Venice.

12 Best Things To Do In Venice Florida You Cant Miss

August 12, 2023 //  by  Florida Trippers

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Venice Florida, then you’ve come to the right place! As a Florida native , I’ve had the opportunity to explore just about every popular city and town. One of my favorite cities in Florida to visit is Venice.

The city has some beautiful beaches and parks, a great downtown district, plenty of delicious restaurants, and so much more. It’s a perfect family-friendly city, but there are still tons of things to do in Venice FL at night. You just have to know where to look!

One of my personal favorite things to do in Venice is go hunting for shark teeth on any of the beaches! But if that’s not your thing, don’t worry. Venice Florida is a city with a small town Florida feel, which is one of the reason’s I love to visit it.

But because it’s a city, it’s full of attractions and activities. Whether you’re looking for historic places to visit in Venice, interested in going biking along the beach, or kayaking in Florida’s only river state park, there’s something for everyone in Venice FL.

So, let’s take a look at the 12 best things to do in Venice Florida that you can’t miss!

12 Best Things To Do In Venice Florida You Can’t Miss

Find shark’s teeth on caspersen beach.

Caspersen Beach is one of the Florida beaches with shark teeth near Venice. The shark teeth are very easy to see along the beautiful clear blue water of the Gulf of Mexico. Caspersen Beach is a more rural beach, so there aren’t many major hotels nearby. That also means it’s typically not that busy.

If you are heading to the beach just to find shark teeth plan your trip around the tides. During low tide is the very best time to spot the small teeth in the sand.

Hunting for shark teeth is one of the coolest free things to do in Venice Florida for all ages. I personally love walking on Caspersen Beach and looking for unique seashells and finding tons of shark teeth.

For those looking for a beach where you can lounge in the sand, this probably isn’t the best option. There’s a reason the beach is known for shelling and shark tooth hunting. Its full of seashells and not necessarily your typical soft white sand Florida beach. So keep that in mind when you visit!

Visit The Venice Fishing Pier

The Venice Fishing Pier is one of the classic attractions in Venice FL that everyone should visit at least once. Fisherman of all skill levels are welcome to cast a line off the side of this massive pier for a small fee. You can bring your own gear, or rent some from the bait and tackle shop located on the pier.

But you don’t have to be an avid fisherman to enjoy a quick trip to the fishing pier! It stretches out over 720 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. So that means it’s a great place to visit in Venice if you want to admire the view of the beaches and town. It’s also a perfect place to watch the sunset.

Walk Down Main Street In Historic Downtown Venice

Walking down Main Street and exploring Historic Downtown Venice is one of the best Venice activities. Visiting the downtown district is like stepping back in time. The architecture is modeled after Venice, Italy, (of course) and has a charming atmosphere.

Along with just being a pretty place for a stroll, downtown Venice, and it’s Main street, has over 130 shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. For such a small little area in this charming beach town, it’s stuffed with places to explore. It’s a perfect thing to do in Venice FL at night if you want a romantic evening at a local restaurant in Venice!

During the day, you can grab a cup of coffee at one of the cafes, pick up souvenirs in one of the local boutiques, or take a break in one of the small parks. The downtown area also has an ambitious outdoor event calendar, so there is almost always something going on.

Visit The South Jetty

A trip to The South Jetty, or just ‘The Jetty’, is a staple activity in Venice FL. The Jetties were constructed in 1937 and the channel between them was dredged. At the time, the town probably had no idea that the area would become so popular.

On the Jetty is Humphris Park, a popular city park with locals and visitors. It’s one of the main reason’s the Jetty is so popular. While you’re there, you can walk along the beach, have a picnic, go fishing, and even bring your furry friends.

But a lot of people come to the Jetty to watch the local surfers, look for dolphins, climb along the rocks, or watch the sunset. It’s a pretty little spot in Venice that is full of life and one of the top things in Venice to see.

Bike On The Legacy Bike Trail

The Legacy Trail in Venice is one of the many awesome bike trails in Florida . It’s one of the best Venice activities. That’s because, running from Sarasota to Venice, it is a chance to ride a piece of history.

The trail was formerly a railroad track, but now it’s a paved bike trail. Along the trail there are several signposts that you can learn from. You’ll learn about the trail history and the local plants around you and see historic buildings, like the Historic Venice Train Depot.

This is one of the easier bike routes in Florida. The path is entirely paved and offers plenty of areas to stop and rest. It’s also a very doable length, at only 10 miles, if you go from Venice to Sarasota or vice versa. You’ll even see plenty of young children and families taking advantage of this beautiful bike trail on a sunny day.

Grab A Meal At The Famous ‘Sharky’s On The Pier’

Sharky’s on the Pier is a pretty famous place to visit in Venice FL. The beachfront restaurant is a local landmark that has been open for over 35 years. Located right on the beach, it’s in a prime spot for ocean viewing, watching the fisherman, and even going for a swim mid-meal!

It’s a restaurant and bar, so it’s popular with the adult crowd. But it’s totally family-friendly, so feel free to bring the whole family for an excellent seafood lunch or dinner. On their menu, you’ll find dishes like their, lobster stuffed flounder, fried gulf shrimp, and 1 1/4lb snow crab legs.

They recently started taking reservations, so if you’re planning to eat there, we highly recommend booking a table ahead of time. On Friday’s and Saturday’s they host live and local bands, which is a really fun way to end your day in Venice FL.

15 Best Things to Do in Venice (FL)

A perfect example of a planned city, Venice came about in the mid-1920s and grew steadily as the 20th century progressed.

Today Venice is an official Florida MainStreet City, with beautiful architecture modeled on the Italian Venice, and streets lined with palms and live oaks. Downtown Venice combines this elegance with first-class shopping, dining, entertainment and culture.

I haven’t even talked about the shore yet. Venice is on a truly special stretch of the Gulf Coast where the sands are laced with countless fossilized sharks’ teeth.

Bring a sifter to spots like Caspersen Beach and the main municipal beach. Come to town in April and there’s even a whole festival dedicated to these fossils.

1. Venice Beach

Venice Beach, Florida

The main municipal beach is at the western end of Venice Avenue, fringed by low dunes with sea oats.

This is Venice’s most convenient and most popular beach. Something I adore here is the Space Age pavilion, a Venice emblem since 1964.

You can comb these sands for sharks’ teeth, while scuba divers can explore a reef a quarter mile offshore. A nice touch is a concession stand/convenience store at the pavilion, open during the day.

Towards sunset most nights the pavilion becomes a stage for live music. There’s also a new age vibe to this beach, with regular yoga sessions, and a weekly drum circle around sunset on Sunday evenings.

2. Downtown Venice

Downtown Venice

One of the best things going for Venice is the award-winning downtown. This flourishing district is threaded by W Venice Ave, but is spread out over quite a large area on intersecting Tamiami Trail and, Nokomis Ave and Nassau St.

The townscape is refined Mediterranean Revival architecture from the 1920s, lush palms, enormous banyans, and stately live oaks. Pedestrians and bicyclists can get around with ease, and the central Centennial Park is right here if you need a break.

More than 100 independent businesses are thriving in this picture-perfect setting. There’s a dynamic shopping and dining scene, especially along W Venice Ave. Make sure to stop by on a Saturday morning, in time for the weekly farmers’ market.

I also can’t get enough of downtown’s effervescent culture, at the Art Center, and the renowned Venice Theatre.

3. Venetian Waterway Park

Venetian Waterway Park

Venice prides itself as a bicycle-friendly city, and you’ll be left in no doubt when you visit the Intracoastal Highway here.

On both sides of this waterway are almost ten miles of paved trails. These lead you straight through downtown Venice where they connect with the Legacy Trail at the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot. That trail continues for almost 20 miles through Sarasota County.

Back in Venice, you can use the Venetian Waterway Park to get from downtown to places like the Airport Festival Grounds, and Caspersen Beach at the southern end. Look out for wildlife on the route, from gopher tortoises to osprey and alligators.

4. Caspersen Beach

<yoastmark class=

Caspersen Beach, at the south end of the Venetian Waterway Park trail, is easily one of my favorite beaches in Venice.

Heading here from downtown you could combine a visit to the beach with a ride or walk along the trail. The beach is beautiful, with a much more rugged shoreline and a more secluded location than Venice Beach.

A long nature trail leads you through the coastal hammock behind. Meanwhile, if you’re hunting for sharks’ teeth I think Caspersen Beach should be your priority. If you bring a sifter you can often scoop them right out of the sand here.

5. Venice Museum and Archives

Venice Museum And Archives

If you’re interested in learning more about the city’s history, take a trip to the Venice Museum and Archives. On the Cultural Campus that includes the municipal library, art center and community center, the museum building dates back to 1927.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996, this was originally the Triangle Inn.

The main exhibit is Venice’s Inhabitants, which looks at the various people who have lived in the area, from the Tocobaga and the Calusa Native Americans to the author Walter Farley.

Given the finds that you can make on the beaches in Venice, I was particularly interested in the Fossils: Venice’s Land Before Time exhibit.

6. Historic Venice Train Depot

Historic Venice Train Depot

One of the most impressive projects when Venice was developed in the 1920s was the southern terminus for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad.

In the heart of downtown Venice, this was completed in 1927, while the complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. On show are a caboose and an 85-foot retired circus car.

Passenger service arrived in 1971, and since then about 20 miles of the old railroad have become the multi-use Legacy Trail. I appreciate how the depot is still a transport hub, served by buses run by Sarasota County Area Transit.

The depot building is beautifully preserved, and you can join a guided tour for the inside track on its history.

These take place on Saturdays 10:30 am to 1:00 pm year-round, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, November through April.

7. Centennial Park

Centennial Park

With downtown Venice’s shops and restaurants all around, Centennial Park is a green oasis dotted with palms.

If you’re a family with younger children, I can bet that you’ll spend some time here on hot days. There’s an awesome interactive fountain that will keep kids entertained for at least an hour.

Elsewhere the ADA-accessible gazebo is the venue for Venice’s Friday Night Concert Series, with shows on the second and fourth Fridays of the month.

In April Centennial Park also welcomes the Venice Sharks Tooth Festival, which I’ll talk about later in my list.

8. Venice Fishing Pier

<yoastmark class=

Venice has had a fishing pier since 1966, although this iconic 700-foot structure has been rebuilt a few times. The most recent work took place in 2019. During that project the pier was given special light fixtures to avoid confusing sea turtles.

One thing I think everyone should do at least once in Venice is visit the end of the pier at sunset. Inspiring a kind of hushed awe, the views will stay with you for a long time.

The pier is pretty much unique in Florida because you don’t need to play a fee to visit. What’s more, you don’t even need a license to fish here. The current benches and fish cleaning stations were all added during the renovation a few years back.

9. South Jetty

South Jetty

In the 1930s a pair of jetties was built along the mouth of the Venice Inlet. On both sides you can stroll out to admire the views, and watch the sun go down.

South Jetty is easiest to get to from downtown Venice, as you don’t need to go all the way around the bay to get here.

Where it differs from the North Jetty is that there isn’t as much sandy coastline along the beach.

So for me the main reason to be here is for the scenery. At the base of the jetty is Humphris Park, with benches and picnic tables below a row of palms lining the inlet.

Stay here for any amount of time and you’re likely to see a manatee or dolphin. With so many people fishing along the jetties, water birds like pelicans are always nearby.

10. North Jetty Beach

North Jetty Beach

On the north side of the Venice Inlet there’s another fabulous coastal hangout in Nokomis. After parking at North Jetty Beach you can wander along the paved path tracing the inlet and running along the jetty.

Both the inlet and jetty are lined with a whole community of people casting their fishing lines. I’ve spent plenty of time watching the boats come and go, and spotting lots of dolphins frolicking in the water.

Further north, the beach is a great place to just relax on the sand and soak up the views. There are plenty of amenities too, making this a great place to spend the whole day, and to linger until the sun goes down.

11. Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer State Park

Along South Creek, Oscar Scherer State Park preserves an area of hardwood hammock, scrubby flatwoods and pine flatwoods.

The extensive scrubby flatwoods here are really important for the vulnerable Florida scrub jay. So at this park you’ll get the chance to view the only bird endemic to Florida. Another important species here is the bald eagle, which nests in the pines in the winter months.

For recreation, Lake Osprey is a small but beautiful water body for swimming or relaxing on the beach. You can also make your way through the park’s habitats on 15+ miles of trails, including a stretch of the Legacy Trail, so you can ride here from downtown.

Last but not least, I’d recommend renting a canoe or kayak from near the campground. South Creek is easy to navigate, and leads through a corridor of dense vegetation brimming with wildlife, including a few gators.

12. Venice Theatre

Venice has one of the largest and most active community theater groups in the country. Established in 1950, the Venice Theatre is based at an historic former Kentucky Military Institute building downtown.

Inside there’s the 432-seat Mainstage, and the 90-seat Pinkerton Theater for smaller productions. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say there’s something happening at the Venice Theatre all the time.

Every season is packed with large-scale Broadway musicals, dramas, comedies, cabarets, or unique one-person plays.

When I was in town the Venice Theatre had just been hit badly by Hurricane Ian, but the season was going ahead as normal.

13. Venice Audubon Rookery Park

I was completely unprepared for this enclave of Florida nature, embedded in the urban landscape in the south of the city. What you see at Venice Audubon Rookery Park is an island on a pond, providing a key nesting site.

December through May, a wide array of wading birds build their nests, incubate eggs and raise their chicks here. Among the species at the rookery are snowy egrets, great egrets, great blue herons, glossy ibises, and more.

Any body of freshwater in this part of the state is going to attract alligators. But something neat about this site is that the alligators serve as security, keeping predators away from the nests. Come early in the day or in the evening for the best birdwatching.

14. Venice Performing Arts Center

In 2014 a state-of-the-art performing arts center opened at the Venice High School campus. Seating more than 1,000, this remains an exceptional place to take in some first-class entertainment.

The center is a seat for several important arts organizations, including the Venice Symphony, the Venice Chorale, and the Venice Concert Band.

There are more than 120 events at this venue every year. These range from classical concerts with nationally renowned guest artists to musicals and shows by tribute acts.

I was in town in time for the Venice Symphony’s 50th anniversary season, and came for a memorable performance of Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique.

15. Venice Sharks Tooth Festival

If I had to choose an ideal time to be in Venice it might be mid-April. Not only is the weather close to perfect, this is when the city’s signature event takes place.

Based at Centennial Park, the Venice Sharks Tooth Festival is two days of fun, celebrating the fossilized sharks’ teeth abounding on the city’s shores.

You’ve got a mainstage with local and regional bands, food trucks for all tastes, and a zone for kids’ activities. The beach and of course Sharks’ teeth fossils are constant themes.

Along those lines, there are fossil talks, displays of amazing fossil collections, and vendors selling impressive specimens discovered at Venice’s beaches.

Things To Do In Venice, FL

Venice is one of the most underrated beach towns to explore in Florida . Located right between Fort Myers and Tampa Bay, this waterfront city boasts some of the most stunning buildings and boulevards whose designs display the look of an Italian city. Some of the prettiest beaches in the United States are based here. Venice Beach is specifically one of the most popular in Sarasota County.

While the landscape is not as dramatic as the Italian Venice, like there isn't a Grand Canal sinking into the water, it's worth exploring. Vacationers will find magnificent gardens , shops, and trees in its historic downtown, which is also a great place to enjoy the city’s impressive architecture.

UPDATE: 2023/09/15 06:48 EST BY NICHOLAS MAYAMBA

Venice is a beach lover's paradise that spoils vacationers with smooth, sandy shores, clear blue waters, and epic ocean views. However, there are more fun things to do in Venice, Florida other than touring its beautiful beaches. This updated article highlights extra attractions in this charming coastal city.

Things To Do

From a bustling downtown area to pristine white sand beaches, Venice, Florida, is packed with fun, sun, and experiences for vacationers. Explore a bit of Italy in Florida with this ultimate travel guide to Venice.

1 Visit Caspersen Beach

Located towards the end of the Venetian Waterway Park trail, Caspersen Beach is one of the best beaches to explore on the East Coast . One of the fun things to do here is hunting for prehistoric shark teeth, something an entire family would find enjoyable.

This beach boasts beautiful shorelines, some with white sand. Other shorelines are rough and rocky, making them unsuitable for lounging by the beach. Visitors will find shops selling various goods.

The best time to search for shark teeth at Caspersen Beach is during low tide when the shore is clear and the teeth are exposed.

2 Venice Theatre

Another thing to see while in Venice, Florida, is the theater. Here, tourists can watch a show at a community theater, whether a high school production or an adults-only viewing of Rocky Horror Picture Show .

What makes this local theater shine is its dedication to the arts in southern Florida, where, a lot of the time: that is lacking. This is the perfect way to support local theater, as well as be entertained by amazing performers!

  • Tickets and hours: Visit the official website to check the calendar of events, dates, and ticket prices.

The Venice Theater puts on shows regularly, with local teens, adults, and even kids performing original and previously done musicals/plays.

3 Venice Municipal Beach

Venice Municipal Beach is one of the best beaches in the city, popular among locals and tourists. People gather here to admire its beautiful coral reefs and comb out its shores for shark teeth. The beach boasts numerous public amenities that make it a crowd favorite, from restrooms, concessions, and picnic areas to outdoor showers and a scenic boardwalk.

This makes it the perfect spot for a family day out. Visitors don't have to worry about the safety of their kids, as lifeguards are always on hand to monitor the situation.

Being a popular spot, parking is limited. This means that vacationers should have good planning to enjoy paradise. It might be a better idea to Uber/Lyft/taxi here because of the parking.

4 Nokomis Beach

Most popular with teenagers and young adults in their 20s, it’s also among the popular beaches, which means parking is limited. It offers diverse opportunities, including fishing and collecting shark teeth. Anglers can find a bait store near the North Jetty Park and a boat/canoe launch to set into the Atlantic waters.

The beach also features a concessions stand serving visitors everything from breakfast to lunch and dinner, which they can down with margaritas, a cold beer, organic juice, or even coconut water. Nokomis Beach also hosts weekly drum circles, which may be a fun "after-hours" event.

The Nokomis Beach Drum Circle is a fun family-friendly event where participants dance to the lively beat of drums in a show that lasts about an hour, give or take.

Since the trail is low-lying, it is prone to floods during the rainy season, so travelers should wear waterproof walking shoes when visiting at this time.

It hosts an extensive network of scrubby flatwoods and hardwood hammocks vital to the region's ecosystem. Several recreation opportunities exist at the park, including over 15 miles of trails that lead adventurers through the amazing park habitat.

  • Admission : $2 per pedestrian and bike, $5 per vehicle
  • Hours : 8 am to sundown

Explore Downtown Historic Venice

Exploring the beautiful historic district of Downtown Venice is definitely one of our top picks for things to do in this magical town. The town was actually one of the first “master-planned” cities to be built, and due to the location along the bays and water the creators were inspired by Venice, Italy. So you’ll find much of the historic downtown area has classic Italian architecture as well as beautifully manicured gardens and palm tree-lined boulevards.

Thinking of moving to Venice? Check out our complete Venice Relocation Guide.

Downtown Venice is full of boutique shops and restaurants that line the streets, making it a lovely place to spend a day or evening out. There is a wide variety of top-notch Italian restaurants downtown, as well as multiple bakeries, coffee shops, wine bars, lounges, and multiple French cafes too! Dining al fresco downtown is nice any time of day, but is especially nice in the evening.

Visit the Venice Fishing Pier

If one of your favorite things to do is go fishing, then the Venice Fishing Pier is probably the best place to do it. Even if you don’t have a lot of experience or don’t have your gear with you, no worries! You can conveniently rent poles and gear on the pier itself for a reasonable price, making it a fun activity even if you have never done it before.

Even if you aren’t an avid fisherman, visiting the Venice Fishing Pier is a must-do activity in town. It’s located on a gorgeous stretch of beach and even just taking a walk out to the end of the pier is a nice stroll. Plus, on a good day, you’ll love the views of the clear blue water and if you are lucky you may even be able to spot some dolphins!

Waterfront Dining

There are few dining experiences that are better than waterfront dining, and Venice offers a wide array of bayside and beachfront restaurants to choose from. One popular restaurant for visitors is Sharky’s on the Pier for some of the best Florida seafood in a laid-back, fun environment. The restaurant is literally at the entrance to the Venice Fishing Pier, so you can’t miss it. Also located above Sharky’s on the 2nd floor is Fins restaurant, which is a higher-end reservations-required restaurant that is perfect for watching the sunset during a romantic dinner.

But there are many other wonderful waterfront restaurants in Venice besides Sharkys and Fins. The Crows Nest is another waterfront restaurant that is highly recommended by locals, as well as Dockside Grill.

Take a Bike Ride Along the Legacy Trail

Believe it or not, biking is pretty big in the Sunshine State, and it’s something that we also love to do in Venice. The Legacy Trail is a wonderful paved trail perfect for biking, walking, rollerblading and more. It stretches from Venice all the way up to Sarasota, giving you plenty of distance to get in a good workout or just relax and enjoy the scenery.

In fact, the south end of the trail around Shamrock Park in the South Venice neighborhood offers some great views in particular, as you ride along the Intracoastal Waterway you can enjoy the boats and wildlife. However, the entire trail is quite beautiful with an abundance of natural scenery that also makes for a fun and exciting bike ride.

Go Boating, Sailing, or Jet Skiing

Being located right on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico makes Venice the perfect place for taking your sailboat, jet ski, or any other type of boat out for an excursion. This is an ideal area for boating and water sports because you have multiple bays, as well as the Intracoastal and canals that connect different bodies of water. Plus, there’s the open ocean too! If you don’t have your own boat or watercraft, there are also multiple places where you can rent.

Visit Snook Haven and Enjoy Some BBQ and Music

One place that surprised us when we first arrived in Venice was Snook Haven . Located east of downtown right along the Myakka River, this little hidden gem offered a lot more than we anticipated. It is primarily a restaurant, and you can dine in the table service area inside or even out on their patio overlooking the river. But you can also do their quick-service walk-up window and sit at any number of outdoor tables in their outdoor courtyard area.

Welcome parking sign for Snook Haven outside Venice Florida with live music, food, and boat tours next to the Myakka River

The walk-up window and sitting outside is actually our favorite. It’s such relaxed environment, it almost feels like a beer-garden type of place under the tree canopies and with all the lights they’ve hung. Plus, there is a stage and they have regular entertainment pretty much every day of the week.

They have some great BBQ on the menu as well as some pretty amazing nachos with homemade chips (top it with some pulled pork and oh my gosh…). The drink menu also includes some great craft beers as well.

Boat Ride on the Myakka River (out at Snook Haven)

While we’re talking about Snook Haven, we want to mention that you can also go out on the river. You can rent kayaks right there on the property if you want, or you can even take a boat tour with a 3rd party company they have operating on site.

Getting out on the water to spot some gators and other wildlife in the area really makes you feel like you are worlds away from tourist-crazy Florida. It’s a peaceful trip on the river, and it’s a nice way to top off a fun afternoon or evening out!

Many Amazing Beaches! (Caspersen, Venice, Brohard, Manasota, Nokomis, etc.)

The beaches here in Venice never cease to take our breath away. They honestly are some of the most beautiful beaches that you will find on the southwest Gulf Coast of Florida. The crystal blue waters combined with the untouched nature of most of the beaches in the area is truly something special. Plus, there are just so many of them!

Venice pier beach

In fact, from downtown Venice within less than about 15 minutes in multiple directions and you can be at around 5 different beaches! Venice Beach is just west of downtown Venice, and south of that is Brohard beach (where you’ll find the fishing pier and Sharky’s), and just south of that is Caspersen Beach. Even further south just a few minutes out of town is Manasota beach as well!

Just across the water to the north of Venice on the other side of the Jetty is Nokomis Beach area as well. While it’s technically a different town, this beach is actually closer to downtown than even Caspersen!

If you are open to driving a little further north, you can be to Siesta Key (voted best beach in the country) in around 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. And south of Venice about the same distance you could be at Englewood Beach as well! There are honestly so many beaches around here – it’s a dream!!!

Take Your Pup to the Best Dog Beach in Sarasota County!

While we’re talking about beaches, we simply cannot go further without mentioning the best dog beach in Sarasota County…and honestly one of the best we’ve found in the state and possibly the country. South Brohard beach, which is the area just south of the Venice Fishing Pier and beach area is actually designated as a public dog beach!

Sunset over the water with golden yellow labrador sitting on sand at the brohard dog beach in venice florida

We’ve actually taken our rescue Labrador to beaches from coast-to-coast here in the US and all over Florida. And we can tell you that the Venice Dog Beach is part of the reason we moved here. It’s AWESOME! Our pup absolutely loves it, plus it’s a wonderful beach for us just to hang out ourselves. So visiting the dog beach is one of our favorite things to do in Venice and something we recommend to anyone with dogs.

NOTE – this is an off-leash dog beach. It’s critical that you have your dogs under voice-control and that they play well with other dogs (and people) if you bring them here. But also take note that if you are on this beach, many dogs will come up to you since they are off-leash. So be aware.

Shark Tooth Hunting (on the beach)

Venice is actually known as the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” because of all the fossilized shark teeth that can be found along its beaches. Don’t worry, these are super old teeth! They date back millions of years to when the area was underwater and a feeding ground for various sharks. Even though you can find shark teeth on many beaches around Florida and even in other states, the sheer abundance of them here in Venice is mind-blowing.

Even on our first visit to Venice, we found teeth washing up on shore as we were just walking along the beach!

A popular activity here in Venice is to grab a sifter and go shark tooth hunting ! You can buy sifters at many of the shops around town, or you can even make your own (which is what we did). Scooping up sand along the shore where the waves are breaking and then carefully sifting through to find all these cool fossilized teeth is actually a pretty fun activity. There are so many shapes and sizes to them that it really can keep you occupied for hours at a time.

So it’s a great activity if you are looking for something to do or to keep the kiddos occupied. Just be sure to put on that sunblock! The sun is no joke here, especially in the summer.

Visit the Jetty to Watch the Boats and Spot Wildlife

The Venice Jetty is located just west of downtown and to the north of Venice Beach. There is a park here where you can walk around and you can also walk down the Jetty. In fact, visiting the Jetty is another one of our favorite things to do in Venice when we are just wanting to get outside to enjoy some nice views and hang out for a bit.

You’ll see a lot of people fishing here every day, or just kicking back to watch the boats go in and out of the bay as well as wildlife spotting. There are some awesome birds here to be seen, it’s also a great place to see manatees and even dolphins!

The Venice Jetty is technically the South Jetty, as the North Jetty on the other side of the bay entrance is on the Nokomis side of the bay. As with the Venice Fishing Pier, the Jetty is a stunning place to watch the sunset in the evening!

Boating at the Jetty in Venice florida on a beautiful summer day

Watch the Surfers at Venice Beach (if the waves are up)

Some of us love nothing more than catching waves on our surfboards, and while the Gulf Coast of Florida is typically calmer than the Atlantic side, when the winds pick up or when there are storms in the area, Venice Beac offers plenty of action! However, if you would prefer to just sit back and watch the surfers, you can do that from Venice Beach or even over at the jetty, which is actually a pretty great spot to watch them!

Paddle Out to Snake Island (if you have a boat or rent one)

If you have a boat and come into the Jetty toward the Bay you will find an island positioned right in the middle of the route as you enter the bay. This is called “Snake Island” and it’s a popular sandy spot for people to take park their boats, kayaks, canoes or paddle boards while they hang out on the sandy island. When the weather is great, you’ll see many people picnicking, playing ball or just hanging out. It’s a great place to watch the boats go by as well.

Enjoy a Sunset Drink & Maybe Some Live Music

Sunsets in Florida are truly a celebration. And while you can enjoy the sunset from many places around town, sometimes it’s made a little more special when you have a drink in your hand and some chill tunes playing in the background. Some of the best places around Venice to enjoy a sunset drink with some music include Dockside Grill, as well as Nokomos Sunset Hut and Pops Sunset Grill. And of course, there’s also the famous Sharky’s and Fins as well. All of these places are perfectly positioned for some amazing sunset views!

Eat Some Mouth-Watering Italian Food at Trattoria Da Mino

There are a number of great Italian restaurants in Venice. However, one place that we absolutely love is Trattoria Da Mino! It’s a fairly small restaurant right on Venice Avenue with high quality and authentic Italian food. We’ve met many waiters from there who are actually from Italy, and having been to Italy 3+ times myself…I have to agree it is legit!

Nothing beats sitting outside on a warm Florida evening to dine on authentic Italian cuisine. Just thinking about their chicken parmesan with their rich tomato sauce and pasta seriously makes my mouth water. The flavors are incredible.

Walk the Trails Around Shamrock Park and Watch the Boats & Wildlife

Living in the South Venice neighborhood , we are spoiled because Shamrock Park is just a few blocks from us. This is a huge park with basketball and tennis courts, as well as a playground and nature center. But what we love most about Shamrock Park are the walking and biking trails. There are many of these paved nature trails that go all around the park, and even run alongside the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s really part of the Legacy Trail system and also connects to the Venetian Waterway Trail as well.

READ MORE: Best Neighborhoods in Venice, Florida

We enjoy biking along the trail, but also just going for a long walk with the dog can be a lot of fun. There are some benches along the way for you to sit and enjoy the views, and you can watch the boats going by on the waterway as well. We’ve even seen people fishing off shore alongside the trail too in some areas. Chances are you may see some wildlife too, including Gopher Tortoises, who can often be found walking across the pathway or nearby.

Boating is popular in Venice Florida with the Intracoastal waterway - here 2 boats pass in the canal waterway between south venice neighborhood and venice island

Catch a Baseball Game

Another relatively new thing to do in Venice is to catch a baseball game at the recently opened Cool Today Park. This is actually the home of the Atlanta Braves Baseball Spring Training ! Being an Atlanta native and huge Braves fan, my husband was super stoked about this place being so close to home here in Venice.

Being able to go out to the stadium to catch a spring training game is high on our list of fun things to do on a beautiful spring day. However, even when they aren’t playing we’ve discovered that their Tomahawk Tiki Bar is the place to score a great outdoor lunch and beverage. Perched up on the concourse outside and overlooking the field, you can sometimes see them practicing and they also will play games up on the jumbo screen that you can watch from the tiki bar.

josh enjoying lunch at cool today park braves spring training stadium tomahawk tiki bar - amazing food and drinks and a fun thing to do in Venice florida

Honestly, the food here is some of the best that you can find around town! It really is so good. Josh is a massive fan of the shrimp po’ boy (apparently it is one of the top items on the menu), but I’m in love with the Philly cheesesteak wrap. Although, their nachos are heavenly as well – although, massive so definitely share the nachos!

Visit the Ideal Classic Cars & Showroom

If you are a lover of automobiles, especially classic cars, then you absolutely must visit the Ideal Classic Cars & Showroom. Filled to the brim with some of the most stunning antique cars in the nation, it is a favorite of car lovers from all corners of the globe. Many of the cars are for sale too!

Learn About Venice at the Museum & Archives

If you are a history buff, then you’ll really enjoy some of the treasures you can discover at the Venice Museum and Archives. Venice has a rich history, and you can quench your curiosity about the area by combing through some pretty interesting artifacts and displays.

I’m always fascinated by how people settled an area, especially a place as rough and rugged as wild Florida (I mean, who could live here without A/C!). This experience will transport you to the past with an impressive collection of photos, art, and artifacts that played a role in creating the Venice that we know and love today.

Visit the Historic Venice Train Depot

Perhaps one of the more unique options when it comes to activities in Venice, Florida is checking out the historic Venice Train Depot. The railroad was actually hugely important to the settling of Florida, especially Venice. Here you can learn about the major influence railroads had on Florida’s history and even view some of the old train cars up close! Recently they even moved the historic Ringling Brothers Circus train car to the depot recently!

Enjoy a Show at the Venice Theater

If you are looking for a more cultural experience during a night out, then we would suggest enjoying a show at the Venice Theater. The theater is actually one of the most active local community theaters in the US, with many shows taking place throughout the year that you can enjoy.

Relax in Centennial Park Downtown

If you are looking for a great way to enjoy the Florida sunshine, Centennial Park in Downtown Venice is the perfect place to do so. This scenic park offers a great atmosphere for relaxing, taking your dog for a stroll, or letting the kids play in the splash pad. The park also makes for a most idyllic setting for an afternoon picnic, especially near the gazebo area.

Being downtown, the park is a great place to people-watch or kick back after a nice lunch. They also have events downtown in the park, including movie nights and concerts at the gazebo on select nights.

Go Hiking, Camping, or Kayaking at a State Park

With its subtropical climate and waterfront location, Venice and the surrounding areas are the wonderful places to plan your next hiking or camping trip throughout the year. Plus, many of the State parks have waterways that allow for exciting kayaking adventures. State parks like Oscar Scherer or Myakka State Park offer some of the best options for exploring our diverse natural surroundings.

There are some great campgrounds on site at both of these parks, which are just a short drive from Venice. The Legacy Bike Trail goes right through Oscar Scherer State Park, making it a great jumping off point for biking the trail. And Myakka State Park has many miles of trails throughout the park. Plus, Myakka State Park also has some beautiful boat rides out on the lake too that we highly recommend!

Do Some Bird Watching at the Venice Rookery

Florida is rich in wildlife of all kinds, but we are perhaps most known for the wide variety of bird species that inhabit the region. Bird watching at the Venice Rookery will allow you a chance to appreciate some of the exotic birds that are native to the area, as well as the winter visitors that boost the bird population each year.

Enjoy the Venice Symphony at the Performing Arts Center

If you are a lover of classical music, then attending a Venice Symphony concert at the Performing Arts Center is a must. There, you can enjoy an evening of world-class entertainment and timeless music in a fantastic setting near downtown.

Take a Dolphin or Sunset Cruise

Rounding out our list of things to do in Venice, Florida is perhaps one of the most captivating experiences of all. Being located on the Gulf coast allows for some scenic boat cruises where you can go out to see dolphins swimming and flipping in the open water or enjoy a relaxing and romantic sunset cruise to end your day on a beautiful note.

Planning Your Trip to Venice, Florida

Florida is a pleasure anytime. The wintertime (December through April) is when most visitors come for the Florida sun, warmth and clear skies, but sometimes in the summer it's cooler here than in the northern states!

Venice Beach, Venice Florida

Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.

There are two Venices : Summer Venice ("off-season") and Winter Venice . ("in season").

Summer Venice

Summer Venice , from June through October , is a small, pleasant Florida Gulf Coast city with an easy pace, friendly people, and quiet traffic. Days are long, temperatures are tropical, the sun is hot, the Gulf sea water is as warm as bath water and great for swimming. Beaches are well-attended but not crowded. In fact, everything's uncrowded. It's easy to get tables at restaurants and doctor's appointments . Evenings are mild and pleasant because of the sea breezes. It can be a great time to visit.

Winter Venice

Winter Venice, from January through April , is a bustling Florida Gulf Coast resort, with a busier pace, lots of less-familiar people with northern accents, and bustling traffic. Half the cars have non-Florida license plates, with lots from the Northeast, Midwest and Canada.

Days are shorter (but an hour or so longer than the days "up north"), with mild to warm temperatures broken by the occasional cold snap when nighttime temperatures can descend to the 40s F (4 to 9°C) and even, unusually, to freezing (32°F/0°C).

The Gulf sea water is cool, from refreshing to chilly. Beaches are more crowded, but if you walk for ten minutes you'll easily escape the crowds. Shops and restaurants are busy, and the Venice Fishing Pier , North Jetty and South Jetty are well populated with people fishing .

The months of May and November are somewhere in between. Summer and Winter. Snowbirds —the Northerners who visit only when it's snowy Up North—may stay into May if they haven't returned to their northern homes for Easter . Those coming in November to visit relatives and friends for Thanksgiving may prolong their Florida vacation. A lot more snowbirds come south after the end of northern hunting season .

December is an anomaly, with some visitors coming, but lots of year-round residents flying north for the holidays with relatives and old friends.

High Season—for Prices

Vacation rentals are most expensive in February and March , they can be somewhat less expensive in January and April , and prices drop substantially between May and December. Here's more information on Venice lodgings.

Use the Hotel & Villa Map below to find lodgings in and around Venice, Florida. (Don't see the map? Click here. )

Coming from a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts, where prices are high, I find spending money in Venice, Florida a distinct pleasure.

Prices are lower across the board from groceries, restaurant meals and transportation to rents and medical care, but prices for tourist services are substantially higher in the winter season.

Transportation

Built in 1942 as the 337th Army Air Field, Venice Municipal Airport is a small general aviation airport on the south side of Venice Florida was deeded to the town in 1947.

Today it's used by owners of small prop and jet aircraft, by the Coast Guard, and by flight schools giving lessons in flying aircraft. (Its notoriety is that some of the September 11th terrorists received their early flight training here.)

Venice History

John Nolen (1869 - 1937) was an outstanding American landscape architect and city planner between the World Wars. His finest creation, and an excellent example of the interwar Garden City urban design movement , is the city of Venice , Florida .

Orphaned at a young age, Nolen studied finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School before moving on to Harvard's School of Landscape Architecture, where he studied under Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr ., son and successor of the founder of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted Sr .

Florida, with its climate similar to that of the Mediterranean, offered Nolen the opportunity to design cities that were attractive, pleasant, efficient and healthful , and that fostered cultural growth .

In 1925, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers invested in the Florida land boom, buying 33,000 acres which included what is now Venice.

Nolen's detailed city plan provided for numerous parks , playgrounds and recreational spaces , a golf course , broad avenues linking the city's various sections and its natural features such as the long, broad beaches along the Gulf of Mexico shore.

John Nolen's city plan for Venice, Florida

A Civic Center would foster society and culture, schools were planned for education and family, and churches for spiritual tranquillity.

Nolen was largely successful in protecting his plan from the dysfunctional results of unplanned commercial and speculative development.

This idealistic—some would say socialistic—concept from the 1920s has provided a century of fine living for Venice's residents.

For contrast, compare it to the luxury gated real estate communities developed inland from Nolen's original city plan during the past few decades. These golf course communities, developed privately and profitably, provide gracious living for those individuals and families fortunate enough to be able to afford them. Each gated development, separated from the next, is reached by private car. Individual fulfillment is emphasized, while community and society enrichment are largely left to develop without plan, as they may (or may not).

Indeed, when residents of gated communities want to experience charming surroundings, they drive to West Venice Avenue, the heart of Nolen's plan.

Circus in Venice

From 1960 to 1992, Venice was the winter quarters of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus . Practices, rehearsals, and the final virtually-a-show dress rehearsals were held in the Venice Arena , a huge, rambling barn-like structure off Field Avenue East and Airport Avenue East that stood near Circus Bridge , the southern drawbridge on Venice Island.

Venice Arena, Venice Florida

When, in 1992, the railroad stopped running as far as Venice, the circus moved its winter quarters north to Sarasota.

Local history and circus buffs made an effort to save and repurpose the Arena, but they did not succeed. The Venice Arena was razed in 2014.

History remains; and not just history. Trapeze star Tito Gaona 's Flying Trapeze Academy remains next to where the Venice Arena once stood, visible from the drawbridge, where you can learn how to fly—safely.

At certain times of year, there may also be a circus camp for kids here.

The Circus Museums at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota give you the whole story.

For a superb youth circus show during summers in New England , catch a performance of Circus Smirkus. Its founder and some of its principal staff were trained at Ringling's Clown College when it was in Venice. More...

Venice launches world first tourist entrance fee in bid to fight overcrowding

VENICE, Italy — Ancient and beautiful, this city is sometimes referred to as an open air museum — and now visitors to Venice will have to pay an entry fee after the tourist hub on Thursday became the first in the world to introduce a charging system for day-trippers.

In a bid to thin out the crowds that throng to see the canals, bridges and striking architecture during vacation season, day-trippers will have to pay 5 euros ($5.35) to enter the lagoon city on 29 peak days, mostly on weekends, as part of a trial phase until July 14.

Tourists who have booked at least one night at a hotel in the city will be exempt from the charge, as will residents, workers and students in the city. Visitors under age 14 will also be exempt. But like the day-trippers, they will also have to ensure they have registered online and received QR codes.

Those without smartphones will have to go to the city’s Santa Lucia train station to buy tickets.

UNESCO Recommends Venice For Endangered Heritage List

Among the thousands of people lining up at the station for a ticket Thursday was Donna Porter-Mutchler, a tourist from Tennessee, who told NBC News she thought the charge was “a wonderful idea.”

“Venice deserves to be taken care of,” she said. “I think it’s more than worth it. I come here often, and I’ll pay every time.”

While there will be no limits on the number of people who can register, officials hope the fee will put people off on days it applies.

“We are not looking to collect money, tax people or introduce a police state,” Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism councilor, told NBC News. “We are being democratic about it, but the important message is: ‘Please, if you are a day-tripper, choose another day.’”

While there are no turnstiles at the city’s entrance points to make sure people have passes, inspectors will make random checks and issue fines of 50 to 300 euros to anyone who has failed to register.

Prominent signs across the city and a TV and newspaper advertising campaign have been launched in Italy and some other countries to let people know about it. And with the help of artificial intelligence , Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has also recorded a video message in several languages to inform tourists about the charge.

Officials in the city estimate an average of 50,000 people a day visit Venice, an influx that almost matches the resident population, some of whom are unhappy about the new charge.

“Venice has turned into Disneyland, where tourists are catered more than residents, and charging $5 is not going to stop anyone,” Federica Toninello of the Social Assembly for Housing and the Solidarity Network for Housing in Venice said Thursday. “It’s just propaganda.”

UNESCO Recommends Venice For Endangered Heritage List

Others, like tourist guide Luisella Romeo, said they were concerned about the use of personal data collected by the new system. “That’s an invasion of privacy. Those details will remain in the system for five years and could be given to third parties, public and private,” she said.

But officials in the city, which narrowly escaped being placed on UNESCO’s “World Heritage in Danger” list last year, in part because the United Nations body decided that it was not addressing concerns that its delicate ecosystem risked being overwhelmed by mass tourism, have insisted that something needed to be done.

Three years ago, large cruise ships were banned from sailing into the Venetian lagoon , and the city has also announced limits on the sizes of tourist groups.

While the charge in Venice is still in its experimental stage, other popular Italian tourism destinations, like Lake Como, which has struggled with overcrowding for years, are watching closely.

Only time will tell whether it ends up dead in the water.
