CDOT launches new, user-friendly road condition and travel planner website and mobile app
News release.
Statewide - The Colorado Department of Transportation launched a new, easy-to-use COtrip.org website on Sept. 29 that features a new 511 map that will allow drivers to safely navigate Colorado roads. While motorists have been using COtrip.org for nearly two decades, this updated website will offer new features that will help travelers plan their route ahead of time, and be prepared for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions.
“This is an exciting time for our agency,” said Bob Fifer, CDOT’s branch manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services. “We are evolving legacy systems to better serve the traveling public. The new website brings more of our transportation technologies into one lens, improving the customer experience. We added several new features, while reducing system maintenance costs. Now, travelers can customize routes from point A to point B to see if their trip may be impacted by any road or lane closures. Motorists will have an easier time identifying road closures, road conditions and construction impacts, all while replacing outdated technologies.”
The new website incorporates the following new features:
Traveler Information & Layers
The COtrip website is powered by a dynamic Google Map™. Motorists can use the map as they would any Google map and click on the icons for more information. Icons are displayed on the map by checking or unchecking the boxes in the layers toolbar. Layers available and what data the layers provide is described here .
Trucker’s Layers
The new Trucker Mode features resources specific to commercial motor vehicle operators, including the following layers defined here .
My COtrip & Travel Alerts
Motorists can log-in in or sign up here for their own COtrip account to subscribe and manage their travel alerts. They can also save their favorite routes and cameras, and customize their travel preferences.
COtrip on Social Media
COtrip traveler information is automatically posted to the @ColoradoDOT Twitter feed. New roadway hashtags and Twitter threads were rolled out in Spring 2021, making it easier for users to track and stay updated on closures and incidents from CDOT. Follow @ColoradoDOT on Twitter for real-time travel information and road conditions.
511 Telephone Service
The 511 telephone service is an interactive, voice-activated traffic information system motorists can access by calling 511 (within Colorado) or 1-800-288-1047 (nationwide). This system has not changed, and will continue to provide a real-time option for travelers to get road conditions and traffic information. Learn more about 511 and how to use this service here .
“The updated website will be a great new tool for the public, however, we also wanted to bring the same information to your mobile device. ” said Fifer. “With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that we are also launching a brand new mobile app on Oct. 1. Now travelers will be conveniently informed no matter where they go. We are committed to continuously improving access to highway information and technologies.”
The new COtrip Planner mobile app was designed to meet the growing trend of information on mobile and tablet devices for the traveling public. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on smartphones and tablets that operate on iOS and Android platforms. Download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play Store starting on Oct. 1.
The app will be fully implemented in three phases
- Traveler app with hands-free, eyes free functionality with customized CDOT layers now available
- Winter-specific layers including weather warnings, weather stations, plow tracker with CDOT snowplow contest names, and Express Lanes
- My COtrip accounts integrated and new map search functionality, including event and camera clustering, predefined routes/areas, and adding an electronic sign layer
- Social sharing of cameras and road conditions will also be available
- Turn-by-turn directions and recommended routes to user mapping app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze)
- Alert banners and push notifications
- Rockfall and wildlife reporting
The COtrip Planner app also includes a feature called TellMe, which enables app users to be hands-free on their route. TellMe detects the user's current location, speed and direction of travel to announce upcoming road conditions and traffic incidents as they travel along their route.
“We want Coloradans and visitors to our great state to have all of the information they need to plan a safe trip, no matter where they go on our state highways and interstates,” said Fifer. “We hope all drivers will take advantage of the website and mobile app before getting into their vehicles for a safe and more convenient trip as both tools will help to eliminate any ‘surprises’ on the roadway.”
You Are Invited
Media partners are invited to join us on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. for a tutorial of the new website and mobile app as well as a chance to interview Executive Director Lew and CDOT’s Branch Manager of the ITS & Network Services. This is your chance to ask questions related to how the change will help your method of reporting as CDOT knows the COtrip cameras are frequently used by its media partners.
WHEN: Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
WHERE: Zoom link to come
WHO: Executive Director Shoshana Lew and Bob Fifer, CDOT’s Branch Manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services

Best places to visit in colorado.
Colorado's scenic terrain draws millions of travelers looking to get swept up in its natural splendor. With a bevy of cities and towns, each with its own unique outdoor offerings, cultural attractions, things to do and awe-inspiring landscapes, it may be difficult to choose the best place for your next vacation. U.S. News took into account a number of factors, including the variety of attractions, as well as the opinions of experts and travelers, to determine the best places to visit in Colorado. Have a favorite? Cast your vote below to help determine next year's list.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Glenwood springs, mesa verde national park, breckenridge, steamboat springs, pagosa springs, buena vista, black canyon of the gunnison national park, crested butte, great sand dunes national park and preserve, dinosaur national monument, colorado springs.
Take a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to see for yourself why it is one of the most-visited national parks in the country. Hike among sky-high peaks or the park's 100-plus lakes, or swap your boots for a pair of skis or snowshoes in winter. If you'd rather explore from the comfort of your own vehicle, drive the scenic Trail Ridge Road (open seasonally) and feel on top of the world. At its highest point, the road reaches an elevation of more than 12,000 feet. What's more, this park is ideal for a camping adventure . But book early: A timed entry permit is required in the summer.
Colorado's most populous city is also its cultural hub. While you can go just about anywhere in Colorado to find outdoor adventures galore, in Denver you get the best of both worlds. The city is filled with top-notch museums, lively sports venues, prime shopping streets and an unmatched brewery scene. Meanwhile, just outside city limits, you'll enjoy easy access to the Rockies, as well as the photogenic Mount Evans Scenic Byway. For an unforgettable experience, catch a show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a unique open-air concert venue with stunning views of Colorado's famous red rocks.
Telluride may not be large in size, but it is big on outdoor fun and adventure, which is why it's named one of the best small towns in the USA . Best known for its highly regarded ski slopes, Telluride offers 2,000-plus skiable acres and terrain suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. Meanwhile, hikers and cyclists flood the trails, paragliders soar through the air and festivalgoers attend the town's plethora of food-, music- and film-focused events during the warmer months. For some of Telluride's best panoramas, drive the San Juan Skyway or ride the gondola to Mountain Village.
Whether you are looking for an adventurous getaway in the Rocky Mountains or a luxurious spa vacation, this small town in northwestern Colorado fits the bill. Glenwood Springs visitors can soak up some rays while horseback riding, whitewater rafting or hiking the popular Hanging Lake Trail. If you'd like to take the thrills up a notch, make time for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, which features cave tours, an alpine coaster and more. Later, soothe your aching muscles at one of the town's acclaimed spas, which utilize the region's natural hot springs in their treatments.
The former home of the Ancestral Pueblo people, Mesa Verde National Park contains about 5,000 of America's best-preserved archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. First-time visitors should prioritize the famous Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Many of the sites can only be accessed by ranger-led tours that may involve quite a bit of walking, climbing and, in some cases, crawling, so travelers should keep their physical health and limitations in mind before visiting. Still, the park's rich history makes the sometimes strenuous journeys well worth the effort.
Remnants of Breckenridge's history as a mining hub give the town a distinct aesthetic. The Rocky Mountains that serve as the town's backdrop, the Victorian-era architecture in the Historic District and the year-round festivals and events all contribute to the town's charm. Plus, the locale's thousands of acres of skiable terrain and the area's long ski season make Breckenridge a winter travel destination for the books. When the powder melts, the verdant vegetation that floods the trails make Breck (as locals call it) magical. What's more, the craft beer scene is an attraction in its own right.
Powder hounds take note: While it may not be as glamorous as some of its Colorado counterparts, Steamboat Springs is still an excellent destination for a ski vacation . After all, it maintains the nickname of Ski Town, USA. Here, travelers can take advantage of nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain covered in snow so light it's commonly called Champagne Powder snow. Steamboat Springs is equally impressive when it's dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer or brimming with foliage come fall. After a long day of hiking, biking or shredding powder, visitors can head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs to soothe aching muscles with a massage or a soak in a thermal pool.
Pagosa Springs' best-known attraction is – you guessed it – its renowned hot springs. Located along the banks of the San Juan River in southwestern Colorado, this small mountain town is home to the world's deepest geothermal hot spring, the Mother Spring aquifer, so it comes as no surprise that travelers flock here looking to soak their stress away. But this alluring Colorado destination has more to offer than just incredible hot springs. Here, travelers can participate in a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, skiing, rafting, horseback riding, fishing and more.
Sitting in southwestern Colorado about 20 miles from the New Mexico border, Durango packs a punch for adventure travelers. Pastimes like hiking, mountain biking and skiing are popular here, and thrill-seekers won't want to miss a white-water rafting tour down the Animas River. Meanwhile, history buffs will love strolling through Durango's vibrant downtown, which boasts a variety of restaurants, art galleries and shops. Another must-do activity is riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Here, travelers can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of San Juan National Forest aboard an authentic steam locomotive.
With recreational activities galore and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, Buena Vista is one of Colorado's best under-the-radar travel destinations. Spend your time relaxing in Buena Vista's natural hot springs, which are some of the hottest in Colorado. Or, go for a drive along the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway for unforgettable mountain views. Meanwhile, if you want something more adventurous, Buena Vista is a great base for hiking 14ers (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet), and you can also try biking, off-roading or white-water rafting. Thanks to Buena Vista's valley location, these activities are typically available year-round.
Colorado's version of the Grand Canyon features some of the state's most stunning views. Carved by the Gunnison River millions of years ago, the Black Canyon's more than 2,000-foot depth has impressed spectators for centuries, including the Ute Tribe who once called the canyon home. Now, along with its incredible scenery, parkgoers can enjoy fishing in the Black Canyon's highly regarded waters, climbing its towering rock formations and hiking or skiing its impressive trails. At night, attention shifts from the rocks and river below to the sky above when visitors can stargaze in this International Dark Sky Park.
Known as both the last great Colorado ski town and the wildflower capital of Colorado, Crested Butte beckons to outdoorsy types year-round. In winter, skiers and snowboarders will find trails for all skill levels, though the town is most famous for its extreme terrain and steep slopes. When temperatures rise, visitors can trade in their skis or snowboards for mountain bikes to take advantage of Crested Butte's hundreds of miles of bike trails. Arrive in July to see the town burst with color and partake in the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival's activities.
Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers a unique outdoor experience. Visitors can sled down the tallest sand dunes in North America or float down the park's stretch of Medano Creek. Hiking, fat biking and horseback riding are other fun ways to explore the area's diverse ecosystems. And at night, travelers can admire the unfiltered night sky while camping. Great Sand Dunes is open year-round, but keep in mind that winter can be chilly and summer can bring scorching sand and thunderstorms, so parkgoers should plan their trips accordingly.
If you're looking to splurge during ski season, Aspen is the place to be. This small town is conveniently tucked between four renowned ski spots – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands – that offer quality slopes for all levels of skiers. Not only that, but the town features the crème de la crème of luxury resorts, a growing culinary reputation (the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen is held here every summer) and an après-ski scene so appealing it'll be pretty tough to leave.
This iconic European-style ski town is a popular haven for celebrities and winter sports enthusiasts. With thousands of acres of snowy trails spread across one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the country, Vail is known for its top-notch skiing and snowboarding. But there is more to the town than just its slopes. When the snow melts and the temperatures rise, Vail's Epic Discovery area invites visitors to engage in other outdoor activities like zip lining, rock climbing and mountain coaster rides. Those looking for less adrenaline-inducing entertainment should check out the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and central Vail's boutiques.
Feel as if you've journeyed back in time during a visit to Dinosaur National Monument. Spread across Colorado and Utah, this protected area is known for its archaeological treasures. You won't find any dinosaur bones on the Colorado side, but budding archaeologists can test their skills by looking for small sea creature fossils on the Harpers Corner Trail. This side of the park is also a prime spot for outdoor activities like hiking, river rafting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For breathtaking views of the surrounding canyons, go for a spin on the Harpers Corner Scenic Drive.
Colorado Springs stands out from its mountainous counterparts because it's not a ski destination. But what the city lacks in slopes it more than makes up for in incredible hiking areas like Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," and magnificent natural landmarks like the Garden of the Gods. Mix that in with a good helping of small-town charm, delectable restaurants and a diverse array of attractions (including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center), and Colorado Springs has all the makings of a great vacation.
Although Boulder is Denver's slightly smaller neighbor, it is no less impressive. With both the Rocky Mountains and the Flatirons in the background, Boulder combines all of the relaxation of an outdoor escape with the energy of a city. Nature lovers will feel right at home while hiking and biking the city's trails or tubing down its stretch of Boulder Creek. Those looking for more urban entertainment can explore Boulder's beer trails or shop and dine at Pearl Street Mall's boutiques and restaurants.

I can’t live with out Trip
I am only going to write one review , I’ve been one of the lucky ones that can appreciate the era of Ctrip to now trip. I lived in the time as an expat I couldn’t get tickets if it want directly from a carrier in 2014. It was frustrating to say the least , when trip developed the English version it’s become a travel changer. It might not be perfect for some , but I can appreciate the work that has been done. Now all , the new features and upload of people’s travel pics is amazing. As a travel enthusiast and vlogger I love sharing my pics and thoughts. Over all thank u for this amazing app , that really makes traveling easier for us expats.
Developer Response ,
Dear yarimar22. Thank you so much for your kind words. We are thrilled to know that we were able to deliver a pleasant experience to you. Please recommend our app to your loved ones and share our friendly app with them! Your feedback is much appreciated. Thank you.
Usually dependable, but really screwed me this time
Hello, I signed up for a flight with my previously filled in credentials, and for some reason trip did not transfer my middle name when they bought the tickets. Because of this I allost missed my flight, as it didn’t match my passport information and China requires a middle name. The agent I talked to refused to change it, and they also refused to talk to the airline receptionist, to come to a reasonable and timely solution. Instead, they told me to cancel my flight- mid transfer, pay a fee of 90$, and then rebook a more expensive and later flight. I was waiting to board my flight, and I had already paid and everything told me not to do this, because it was unreasonable. The app wouldn’t let me manually change the information, even after 4 requests, it rejected them saying the airline disallowed it, even though the receptionist had given me specific directions of contacting trip to change it, so I knew the airline was actually fine with this. This was absurd, to be left without a flight despite the ‘cancellation insurance’ and really hurt the app for future flight purposes for me.

Holiday inn Southeast in Plainsboro, NJ
This hidden gem hotel provides all of the amazing amenities of the Crown Plaza Princeton ( which is basically attached to the holiday inn on an amazingly beautiful 27+ wooded acres featuring extensive running trails, a beautiful pond and multiply fountains and waterfalls….. not surprisingly, the IHG/Crown Plaza is frequently the site of weddings as well as conventions of a less romantic bent…. I was a guest at Holiday Inn/IHG Southeast for the Fall/winter of 2023 and was very impressed with their newly updated rooms ( renovation was completed on the Holiday Less than 6 months ago and the rooms have a splashy , bright, modern look that I actually prefer to the Crown a plaza , all while sharing the amenities of the aforementioned hotel….. it’s truly a great value! I’d like to conclude with a special Thank You especially to Jothathan as well as the other entire front desk staff who made my staff exceptionally comfortable, they were friendly and went above and beyond throughout my entire stay …. The housekeeping staff is also extremely helpful. Thank you for a wonderful stay! Bari WoodmaN NY,NY Solo Traveler

From Colorado brews to Palisade peaches, these annual gatherings celebrate the best of food and drink in the Centennial State.
The Local newsletter is your free, daily guide to life in Colorado. For locals, by locals. Sign up today!
’Tis the season for Colorado food and drink festivals, which celebrate everything from local and national culinary talent to craft beer, wine, and mead. As you start to make your warm weather travel plans, consider adding these road-trip-worthy affairs to your calendar.
Manitou Springs Wine Festival | June 1
Held each year in Manitou Springs, the quirky enclave just west of Colorado Springs, this one-day event is the perfect way to kick off the start of summer. Taste a variety of wines and meads from nearly 30 Colorado purveyors such as Buckel Family Wine and Carlson Vineyards , all while listening to live music and perusing the wares of various vendors.
Lake Dillon Beer Festival | June 15
Pay a visit to Summit County for this one-day beer festival , where you can sip brews from more than 30 Colorado breweries. Be sure to bring your camera, too, because you’ll want to snap views of Lake Dillon surrounded by the mountains all day long.
Vail Craft Beer Classic | June 14–15
Plan a road trip to Vail to spend a relaxing weekend sipping delicious craft brews at this year’s Vail Craft Beer Classic , which is back for its eighth year. Mingle with brewers, kombucha-makers, and seltzer-slingers from around the state, who are bringing hundreds of different beverages to the Vail Valley for festival-goers to try.
Food & Wine Classic | June 14–16
If you can snag a ticket to the iconic Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, you’ll get to hobnob with some of the world’s leading chefs, sommeliers, spirit-makers, and other pros, all while soaking up the summertime beauty of Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. The three-day culinary festival is already sold out, but there’s a waitlist you can join just in case.
Reds Whites and Brews | June 22
This cleverly named festival in Steamboat Springs is all about beer, wine, and enjoying the mild summer weather in the Yampa Valley. Sip your drink of choice while listening to live music, shopping local vendors, and munching on snacks in downtown Steamboat.
Bacon and Bourbon Festival | June 22–23
Gather up your crew of bourbon- and bacon-loving friends and family and head to Keystone for a seriously mouthwatering combination. Held at Keystone’s River Run Village area, this festival includes tons of concerts, a bacon-eating competition, tastings, and a special “Camp Bacon” area for kids, complete with a bacon bingo scavenger hunt.
Colorado Brewers Rendezvous | July 13
Back for its 28th year, the Colorado Brewers Rendezvous is the ultimate summer craft beer festival. Held in Salida’s Riverside Park along the picturesque banks of the Arkansas River, this gathering involves more than 60 breweries from across the Centennial State, plus food and live music.
Heritage Fire | July 27
Colorado’s favorite open-fire culinary festival, Heritage Fire , returns to Snowmass on July 27 with an array of local talent. Head to the mountains for this one-day fest to watch talented chefs prepare heritage-breed meats over an open flame to complement beverages provided by sommeliers, distillers, and brewers.
Vail Wine Classic | August 8–11
If wine is your drink of choice (or if you’ve always wanted to become better acquainted with it), consider attending this year’s Vail Wine Classic . Over the course of four days, you can meet winemakers, attend seminars, enjoy paired dinners, and sample wines from around the world at this oenophile’s dream.
Palisade Peach Festival | August 16–17
Indulge in as many juicy, fresh-off-the-tree peaches as you want at this year’s Palisade Peach Festival , which celebrates the annual harvest of delightful stone fruit that grows on the Western Slope. Chat with (and thank!) the local farmers and ranchers who lovingly tend to the peach trees all year long, watch cooking demos, take an orchard tour, and feast on peach dishes at this two-day gathering.
Cidermass | August 17
Move over beer—and make way for cider. This fermented apple beverage is sweeping the Centennial State and there’s no better place to try a variety of hard ciders than at Cidermass . Held at the Snowmass Mall in the scenic Roaring Fork Valley, this one-day gathering welcomes more than 30 cidermakers and vendors from across the country for your sipping pleasure.
Breckenridge Wine Classic | August 22–24
Before summer fades into fall, head up to Breck for the Breckenridge Wine Classic (the Vail Wine Classic’s sister event). As the leaves begin to turn in the mountains, enjoy bites and sips from more than 100 chefs, purveyors, wineries, breweries, and distilleries.
Olathe Sweet Corn Festival | August 24
While Colorado’s sunny climate produces many excellent veggies, Olathe corn is notably delicious. This festival celebrates the delectable yellow kernels by slinging out all-you-can-eat corn; crowning corn royalty; putting on a car show, parade, and corn-eating contest; and hosting tons of other family-friendly activities.
Colorado Mountain Winefest | September 21
Colorado Mountain Winefest , which raises funds for the nonprofit Colorado Association for Viticulture and Enology, is the largest wine festival that exclusively features Colorado wine. Fifty Colorado wineries (and other beverage makers like cideries, meaderies, and a sake brewery) will set up at Palisade’s Riverbend Park and pour unlimited sips for thirsty festival-goers. If you can’t make it to Palisade on the 21st, also look out for other Colorado Wine Week events held statewide from September 16 to 22.
Pueblo Chile & Frijoles Festival | September 20–22
Celebrate Colorado’s agricultural prowess and get your fill of smoky green chiles at the Pueblo Chile & Frijoles Festival this fall. If you’re feeling brave, consider entering the jalapeño-eating contest. And, if not, there’s still plenty to do and see at this three-day gathering, from a chihuahua parade to live cooking demonstrations to a colorful farmer’s market.
Steamboat Food & Wine Festival | October 3–6
The Steamboat Food & Wine Festival is a beloved Yampa Valley event that brings together award-winning chefs, winemakers, and other epicurean experts from across the nation. Choose from educational seminars, tastings, paired dinners, and more at this fall foodie event in the mountains.

Tipping is 'not an entitlement': Should travelers stop tipping for everything?
Tipping is dead.
At least tipping, as you and I understand it. A mandatory 20% gratuity on every restaurant meal? Obligatory tips for housekeepers, concierges and tour guides? Kiss them goodbye.
And if you want to know why, just ask Gerri Hether.
Like many Americans, she's tired of the attitude that all service workers are entitled to a tip. She became exasperated with the point-of-sale terminals that solicited a gratuity before even serving her food. But then the final straw was when restaurants started to add automatic gratuities to their bills for her "convenience."
"I don't tip anymore," said Hether, a retired nurse from Mesa, Arizona.

Americans are known for generosity and willingness to tip for good service. But a recent poll by USA TODAY's Blueprint found 63% of respondents say too many businesses are asking for tips, and 48% are tired of being asked for a gratuity.
Almost the same number of Americans (62%) in another survey said they wouldn't give service workers year-end tips, according to the digital personal finance company Achieve. The reason? Tip fatigue.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer
Why Americans have had enough of tipping
An increasing number of Americans believe that tipping expectations are unfair, said Carla Bevins, an expert on business management communication at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. And that has led to a shift in public attitudes toward gratuities.
"The momentum behind the no-tipping movement stems from growing scrutiny over the fairness and necessity of traditional tipping practices," she explained.
To hear people like Ian Duncan talk about it, it's a reaction to the widespread attitude of entitlement in the hospitality industry. It's tip jars at coffee shops, laundromats and grocery stores. It's having to pay a gratuity before you even receive a meal or service.
Duncan, a small business owner from Toronto, recently booked a cruise. However, when he received his invoice several weeks before his departure, the cruise line had added more than $200 in automatic gratuities to his bill .
"That did it for me," he said. "I canceled the trip and asked for my deposit back."
Duncan said he wants to decide who and when to tip – or whether he should tip at all – and resents it when a company assumes it is entitled to a gratuity. He also doubts that the staff will receive any automatic gratuity added to his bill, which is a valid concern.
Even etiquette experts say the time has come to talk about tipping.
"Tipping evolves over time, and we are long overdue to revisit the legal and social norms for how employees are paid," said Jodi RR Smith, an etiquette expert with Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting . "Expecting individual consumers to tip generously at every turn is not a long-term plan for economic success."
Even service workers agree that it's gone too far
Even people who depend on tips understand that things have gone too far. Mike Aguirre, a blues guitarist who performs in the Caribbean, blames the new terminals that try to extract a tip from patrons before they receive their meal.
"Leaving a tip before you receive your order seems premature − no service has been rendered yet, but there is a palpable element of guilt involved," he said.
It gets worse, actually. In some places abroad, restaurant servers come to your table with a portable payment system and ask you to enter a gratuity while they watch . Talk about pressure!
But people like Aguirre are likely to suffer because of the understandable tipping backlash. Many service workers have come to depend on gratuities to earn a living. Squeezing a tip out of a customer before the meal is served or under the watchful eye of your server is hardly the fault of the employee. However, the employees are likely to pay for these misguided policies.
Even etiquette experts have limited their tipping. Etiquette consultant Rachel Wagner said she no longer tips at hotel self-serve snack bars (even when there's a tip jar), at restaurants where you order at the counter, and at airport food kiosks.
"When the terminal shows me the tipping options, I choose 'no tip,'" she said.
She calls these kinds of tips "entitlements" and isn't worried about a service worker's reaction.
"All this person has done for me is take my money and place my items in a bag," she said. "There is no need to tip!"

How to avoid tipping
Fact is, most service workers continue to rely on tips, and many believe you should always leave a gratuity. But there are ways to sidestep this unspoken obligation.
- Go to a no-tipping business. Some hotels and restaurants advertise themselves as "no tipping." The easiest way to avoid a gratuity – and to encourage other companies to adopt sensible policies on tipping – is to give these companies your business. Have dinner at Thattu in Chicago, an Indian restaurant that pays its servers a competitive wage and doesn't solicit tips. Or Casa Bonita the Mexican Restaurant in Lakewood, Colorado, that doesn't accept gratuities.
- Get takeout. No reasonable person expects you to tip your restaurant worker when you get takeout. So, one way to avoid leaving a gratuity is to get your next restaurant meal to go.
- Refuse to tip. You can also send a message to a business about tipping by putting a zero in the tip line. Hether, the retired nurse who has stopped tipping, said the reaction from service workers has been one of resignation. It seems they know the system is broken, but they don't know how to fix it.
The future: Gratuities based on good service
When it comes to tipping, the future may look a lot like the past. Travelers say they don't think it's fair that they should subsidize a service worker's salary with a mandatory gratuity. But they like the traditional idea of offering a service worker a little extra for exceptional service.
Hether said she's still open to rewarding good customer service with a gratuity. But she'll never again fork over 20% of her bill out of a sense of obligation.
"Tipping should be based on exceptional service," she said. "It's not an entitlement."

9 Places To Retire That Are Just Like Colorado But Way Cheaper
Posted: May 15, 2024 | Last updated: May 16, 2024
Plenty of people are drawn to places like Florida for their retirement , looking for warmer weather and a more laid-back lifestyle. For those who lean more towards an outdoorsy life -- and that don't mind a cold winter -- Colorado has become a top choice.
Full of natural beauty, outdoor adventures and a vibrant culture, Colorado is a wonderful place to live -- unfortunately, that desirability comes with a sometimes hefty price tag. Cities like Boulder and Denver are becoming difficult to afford, especially for retirees with a fixed income. There are other options out there that are more affordable and offer many of the same things that make Colorado appealing. GoBankingRates spoke to experts about their top choices.
Jenoa Matthes is a travel expert and founder of The Travel Folk , a site that provides curated itineraries and expert advice on trip planning. She offered two great alternative destinations.

Flagstaff, Arizona
"Sitting at a high elevation in the mountains, Flagstaff has a climate remarkably similar to parts of Colorado with its cool summers and mild winters where you can actually get snow. But the housing prices are far more manageable. And like Colorado, there is a big focus outdoors with hiking, mountain biking and even skiing available. Of course, you also get those beautiful sunsets overlooking the surrounding peaks. The historic downtown has a fun small town vibe and the community really embraces the arts," Matthes said.

Asheville, North Carolina
"Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville enjoys four distinct seasons just like Colorado but in a more affordable package. The summer heat is tempered by the elevation and you have gorgeous foliage in fall. Outdoor pursuits abound from hiking and biking to kayaking and the locals have really embraced their mountain town roots. I personally loved strolling through the artistic alleys of the downtown filled with live music, craft beers and more. Of course, it also has a bit of Southern hospitality thrown in," Matthes said.
Wayne Kask, travel writer and the CEO of Discover West Central Florida , said there are plenty of retirement options across the U.S. that offer a similar lifestyle at a much lower cost. He shared his top five picks.

Mesquite, Nevada
"Located near the Arizona border, this desert oasis combines warm weather, gorgeous scenery and Southwest living. Between the red rock vistas and dozens of golf courses, it's like a cheaper version of Colorado. Housing is a steal too, with an average home value around $300,000 -- much less than you'll pay in Denver or Boulder," Kask said.
Springfield, Missouri
"It's not mountainous, but Springfield still provides plenty of lakes, trails and parks for staying active outdoors. The Ozarks are great for fishing and boating. Cost of living is low, culture is plentiful with live music and museums and homes are very affordable at around $150,000. Can't beat Midwest living on a retirement budget," Kask said.
Austin, Texas
"Sure, it's grown quite a bit, but it still has that laidback, outdoorsy vibe reminiscent of Colorado. There are hiking trails galore, great food and music scenes, and no shortage of activities. Housing sits around $450,000 on average -- not exactly cheap, but more reasonable than many parts of Colorado nowadays," Kask said.

St. George, Utah
"St. George, Utah, is an excellent option for an affordable retirement. This is a great place for people who love nature because it's ideal for hiking and cycling since it's located right near Snow Canyon. It takes less than an hour to go to Zion National Park. The alternative is less expensive and benefits from Colorado's natural resources; typical property values are about $355,000," Kask said.
Port Angeles, Washington
"Port Angeles, Washington, is nestled in the beautiful natural scenery of the Olympic Peninsula -- it's surrounded by mountains, lakes, rainforest and even has a rugged coastline. For nature lovers, it's [a] paradise with a quaint small-town feel. Housing averages $400,000, which is very reasonable compared to the amenities and beauty," Kask said.
Andy Medearis is a travel expert, bargain hunter and founder of Deals Points , a website about travel, points, loyalty programs and credit cards. He shared two of his top picks.
Hot Springs, Arkansas
"Hot Springs has an amazing mix of scenic forest landscapes from the Ouachita Mountains as well as the unique feature of their dozens of natural hot springs pools dotted throughout the town. Being able to easily soak your aching muscles in the thermal waters after a day of hiking or fishing in the mountains is such a bonus. Plus, the costs of living are around 16.5% lower on average than the rest of the nation. Housing prices are also 32% below average, which can go a long way in retirement," Medearis said.

Lamar, Colorado
This one might be cheating since it's actually in Colorado, but Lamar offers most of the amenities of much more expensive cities like Boulder and Denver.
"Lamar manages to offer many of the same perks you get from living in more expensive parts of Colorado, like easy access to glorious Rocky Mountain views and activities such as camping, fishing, hunting, etcetera -- but gets you those benefits at an almost unbelievable nearly 30% reduced cost of living compared to the rest of the country on average. That's huge for stretching your nest egg as far as possible. And believe it or not, home prices there are still a whopping 57% below the national average!" Medearis said.

Colorado Springs, like Denver, abuts the Rocky Mountain foothills and brims with ways to enjoy the outdoors, although it runs at a slower pace. Once known for its megachurches and kitschy attractions like recreated ancient cliff dwellings, Colorado’s second-largest city now has a more cosmopolitan vibe: Notable openings and upgrades include a stunning $91 million Olympic and Paralympic museum and a major revamp of a resort overlooking the red sandstone of the Garden of the Gods park. Later this year, the 8,000-seat Sunset Amphitheater will open, as will the Hotel Polaris , at the U.S. Air Force Academy, advertised as the country’s only hotel with flight simulators. Through all this change, the mighty 14,115-foot Pikes Peak remains constant, a beacon on the western skyline — though with a recently refurbished cog railway.

- Adam’s Mountain Cafe is an almost 40-year-old restaurant in Manitou Springs that is beloved for its hearty breakfasts.
- Cronk Art and Curiosities sells taxidermied insects, tarantulas (live), tarot cards and other eclectic goods.
- Novis Mortem Collective offers natural art like insect specimens, taxidermied birds and butterfly dioramas in glass domes.
- Cacao Chemistry makes a delicious variety of truffles and bars and carries chocolate from other artisanal brands.
- Ladyfingers Letterpress prints offbeat greeting cards and stationery in house and stocks gifts, too.
- Poor Richard’s is an independent bookstore that has served the city for almost 50 years and includes an adjacent coffee shop and casual restaurant.
- The Garden of the Gods Resort and Club , established in 1949 as a private facility and opened to the public in 2013, unveiled a $40 million renovation last year that included updates to its restaurant. It also refreshed the sleek and spacious rooms in the main lodge, which all have patios or balconies overlooking the Garden of the Gods park and the Rocky Mountains beyond. Amenities include golf, tennis, swimming, an on-site adventure outfitter and an excellent spa and a concierge medical center. Rooms in summer start at $600.
- The Mining Exchange , a boutique hotel run by Wyndham that is also newly renovated, occupies a 1902 building downtown that served as a stock exchange for miners. Rooms include historic brick accents and the hotel recently added a new lobby bar and coffee shop. Rooms start at $300.
- Kinship Landing , one of a new breed of hotels aimed at adventure-oriented travelers, opened downtown in 2021. It offers some rooms with garage-style roller doors that open to the outside, an eight-bed private bunkroom and even a scenic deck for urban camping (bring your own tent). Rooms start at $150.
- For short-term rentals , look in Old Colorado City, a historic neighborhood near Garden of the Gods park, where you can easily walk to restaurants and galleries. Downtown Colorado Springs is less than three miles away.
- The most efficient way to get around is by car . PikeRide , an electric bike-share program, has 60-plus hubs in and around Colorado Springs ($1 to unlock a bike, then 25 cents per minute, or $30 for a four-hour pass). Mountain Metro runs the public bus service , including a free shuttle around downtown.
A dramatic view of Colorado Springs, framed by rough-hewn cliffs, comes early in a 2.2-mile roundtrip hike up Mount Cutler in North Cheyenne Cañon Park . The popular city park added seven miles of new trails three years ago, but this classic route never gets too steep and has a big payoff. From the summit, inhale fragrant juniper, piñon and ponderosa pine while viewing the sparkling tiers of the Seven Falls waterfall far below in South Cheyenne Cañon and the forested slopes of the Pike National Forest rolling westward. From nearby Cheyenne Mountain, you may hear the chimes coming from the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun , a granite tower with a viewing deck overlooking the city. You’d never guess from this vantage point that a large military complex , built during the Cold War, still operates 2,000 feet deep within the mountain.
At Lumen8 , a rooftop restaurant and bar that opened downtown in 2022, post up by a fire pit, sip one of seven local brews on tap (from $6) and gaze at the majestic, snow-capped Pikes Peak. Then head up the street to the low-lit dining room at Four by Brother Luck , where its chef and owner, Brother Luck, who appeared on “Top Chef,” offers Southwestern-inspired dishes like sweet-and-savory blue cornbread accompanied with wojapi (a thick berry sauce traditional in Lakota cuisine), charred octopus in mango broth with tangy Peruvian peppers, and a fun dessert called the Forest Floor with sweet elements styled as edible “flora.” Dishes are a la carte, or four courses for $75.
At Garden of the Gods , one of the country’s most unusual city parks and a designated National Natural Landmark, 300 million years of erosion have shaped the red sandstone into fantastical formations — with names like the Kissing Camels, Siamese Twins and Balanced Rock — that strikingly contrast the often vivid-blue sky. Stop first at the visitor center , which is chock-full of exhibits about the park’s geology, history, and flora and fauna (a species of dinosaur was even discovered there). Then explore some of the short, interconnected hiking trails that allow you to view the striated, pitted rock up close, starting with the 1.5-mile paved Perkins Central Garden loop (a free shuttle provides access to the trailhead through the third week of August). Or see the park on horseback (from $100), bike ( rentals , from $40, available at the visitor center) or by car. Free entry.
It’s perfectly legit to drink at Ivywild School , a former elementary school turned food hall, where the well-worn wood floors creak underfoot and the entryway sign is written on a blackboard. The school was built in 1916 and decommissioned in 2009; now, instead of rows of small desks, former classrooms house a variety of food counters and bars, as well as a whiskey distillery and an eclectic gift shop . Try Bristol Brewing Company’s pub for its signature Laughing Lab Scottish ale ($6.50 for a pint); Ivywild Kitchen for a spicy, buttermilk-brined chicken sandwich ($11.95), washed down with house-made nonalcoholic ginger beer ($4) from the Principal’s Office ; and Gold Star Bakery for a splurgy but delectable slice of salted maple pie ($7).
With the Paris Summer Olympics around the corner, stoke the fervor for amazing athletic feats and tear-jerking gold-medal moments at the excellent U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum (entry $19.95), open since 2020. (Colorado Springs has been home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee since 1978, and has a major training center.) The building’s striking exterior — which features thousands of aluminum panels shimmering in the sunlight — hints at the high-tech displays inside, including virtual sport simulators (try archery!) and other interactive exhibits for each sport. A gallery of Olympic torches, from 1936 to the present, contains inspiring video footage from the torch relays. One of the most moving exhibits focuses on the 11 Israeli athletes taken hostage at the 1972 Munich Games, and includes the ABC sports announcer Jim McKay’s somber broadcast of their fate.
Colorado Springs is showing more of its artsy side these days, even in the heart of downtown. From the museum, stroll a few blocks to AdAmAn Alley , a walkway where murals, sculpture and an LED installation commemorate the 2022 centennial of a local mountaineering club , AdAmAn, that climbs Pikes Peak each New Year’s Eve to set off fireworks. Need a live tarantula, taxidermied butterfly or deck of tarot cards? Find these, and mystical treasures, at Cronk Art and Curiosities (the nearby Novis Mortem Collective also offers taxidermy as art). Indulge a sweet tooth with a whiskey-and-cherry-cordial truffle at Cacao Chemistry , then duck into Ladyfingers Letterpress , where the on-site press produces sassy cards (“Don’t forget me when your start-up goes public”), and Poor Richard’s , an indie bookstore that’s served local literature lovers for almost 50 years.
Smoked cocktail at Inefable
The low-key décor lets the food shine at new restaurant Inefable above the just-renovated Avenue 19 food hall, where the chef and owner Fernando Trancoso boosts traditional Mexican dishes with French, Spanish and South American influences. Bright flavors meld nicely in a slightly spicy tropical fruit gazpacho (pineapple, passion fruit, lemon and cucumber) with poached shrimp ($16), while a pumpkin-seed green mole adds a twist to a traditional duck confit ($39). A recent nightly special featured cochinita pibil ($42), a Yucatán-style slow-roasted, fall-off-the-bone pork shank that’s been marinated overnight in a sauce with Maya spices, red chiles and achiote (a slightly peppery spice). The cocktail menu reflects Mr. Trancoso’s Mexican roots with almost three dozen varieties of tequila and mezcal.
It’s a little corny, sure, but belting out tunes like “Sweet Caroline” or “Piano Man” during the nightly singalongs at the Golden Bee , a pub within the venerable Broadmoor resort on the city’s west side, is also a lot of fun, in a seventh-inning stretch at the baseball game kind of way. The bar is a 19th-century English pub that was shipped over and reassembled in this space in 1961, ornate woodwork and all. Everybody gets a songbook, and the piano player leads the program (and takes requests). Order a pint ($10) or a half-yard ($28) of Extra Special Bee, an English-style pale ale from the local brewery Red Leg, to wet your whistle.
North Cheyenne Cañon Park has 26 miles of trails, including one up Mount Cutler.
Adam's Mountain Cafe
Have breakfast in Manitou Springs, a quirky enclave at the base of Pikes Peak — but instead of taking Highway 24, take a more interesting detour by driving Colorado Avenue west through the Old Colorado City neighborhood. The area was once its own town, established in 1859 as a supply hub. Today, several blocks are lined with historic buildings, galleries and shops, such as Story Coffee , a small cafe and roastery. Continue driving west to the homey Adam’s Mountain Cafe , an almost 40-year-old favorite for hearty meals like orange-almond French toast ($12) or shrimp and grits ($18). Then stop by one of the town’s eight mineral-springs fountains for a swig of naturally carbonated, slightly metallic-tasting water (each spring has a different “flavor”); the Native Americans who first lived here attributed healing properties to the water.
Take the world’s highest cog railway to the summit of Pikes Peak (from $59 per person for the three-and-a-half-hour round trip). Reopened in 2021 after a $100 million, four-year overhaul, the train is the easiest way to ascend the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” (there’s also a 19-mile toll road and hiking trails up). You’ll ride past cascading streams, the ruins of the Halfway House Hotel and perhaps a few bighorn sheep. At the spacious Summit Visitor Center , recently rebuilt with an energy-efficient modern design, don’t miss the doughnuts (from $2.99 for two); a beloved tradition since 1916, they’re baked from a recipe that only works well above 14,000 feet. Munching on a cinnamon-sugar doughnut amid 360-degree views of mountains and plains may inspire you to pen your own tribute.

Saucony’s Beginner-Friendly Running Shoes Are 30 Percent Off
In case you haven’t seen, this week is Running Week at the Strategist. If you’re a new runner or thinking about getting back into it yourself, we have you covered on all the best shorts , water bottles , and gear . Shoes are arguably the most expensive thing you’ll splurge on for the sport, but luckily, we found some of our favorite beginner-friendly pairs on sale over at REI. The Saucony Ride is said to be a neutral shoe perfect for keeping an easy, steady pace, and it’s 30 percent off in women’s and 25 percent off in men’s . Also on sale is the Saucony Triumph, which Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa says is better if you like a “closer-to-the-ground feel.” Both men’s and women’s are 30 percent off. This pair also comes in more neutral colorways, if the bright orange and yellow are a deal-breaker. If you’re ready to hit the pavement, snag one of these pairs while they’re still on sale.
The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
