What to pack for Argentina

People packing for a tour

Formal wear

Although there is no written dress code, you may want to dress up for a tango show or a night at the Teatro Colón, one of the world’s best opera houses.

Wind and waterproof coat

Patagonia is famed for its chilly climate and strong winds, so you’ll need to pack a sturdy coat, scarf, hat and gloves to stay warm.

Versatile shoes

Argentina has a myriad of terrains and you’ll need shoes that can take you dancing across a tango hall, and hiking through rugged mountain trails.

Adaptor plug

In Argentina, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and I. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

The sun is extremely strong in Argentina, and you’ll need sunglasses (and sunscreen) to protect yourself, even in winter when the gleaming snow can be blinding.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Destination must-sees.

Argentina ms1

Buenos Aires:

The capital city of Argentina, birthplace of the tango, home to a mosaic of European-styled architecture and South American spirit, it’s nearly impossible not to fall head over heels, madly and deeply in love with this very special place. It’s often called the "Paris of Latin America" and lives up to its name with incredible food, fantastic shopping, stunning architecture and culture galore.

Argentina ms2

Tango Performance:

The Tango is arguably one of the greatest contributions Buenos Aires has made to world culture. The famous dance is said to have originated in the mid-1800s by the large influx of immigrants from Africa, Spain, Italy, England, Poland and Russia. Visitors can enjoy glitzy tango shows, but anyone inspired to perfect their moves can find a willing teacher in salons, cafes and at dance events.

Argentina ms4

A sliver of steep streets and jumbled buildings, this city lies between the Andes and the Southern Ocean. It is at the southernmost tip of South America, which gives it the nickname “the end of the world.” But this is no isolated spot that’s cut off from civilization! It’s a busy port filled with adventures like hiking, sailing, skiing, kayaking, and even scuba diving. Many tourists travel to “the end of the world” each year to enjoy its many treasures.

Destination Must-Dos

Argentina md1

Argentina meat from the Papas region:

Argentina has the second-highest consumption rate of beef and is the third-largest beef exporter in the world. There are millions of herds of cattle in Argentina, mostly kept in the fertile pastures of the pampas where they feed on grass and live under more natural conditions. Many Argentinians believe strongly that raising beef on natural grasslands is a sustainable tradition that produces healthier animals and more nutritious meat.

Argentina md2

Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and the fifth largest producer in the world. It’s best known for its versions of classic red wines like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. It is said that long ago, a catholic priest who came to these lands planted vineyards near their monasteries to ensure the provision of wine for the celebration of holy mass and the rest, as they say, is history.

Argentina md3

Perito Moreno Glacier:

Three miles wide and twenty stories high, this is the jewel of Argentina’s Patagonia, located in Los Glaciares National Park. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and it forms part of the Patagonian Continental Ice Field. It’s one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing. Visitors enjoy spotting floating icebergs from the shore and hearing the powerful sound of ice crashing into the water as they break from the glacier.

Argentina md4

Iguazu Falls:

This is a natural wonder of the world with over 270 falls in the area, plus many ways to view them from both the ground and by helicopter. A visit to Iguazu Falls (Iguazu means “Big Water” in Guarani Indian) will leave you in awe. Sitting on the border of Argentina and Brazil, this roaring, jaw-dropping machine provides you with a visceral experience you’ll never forget. It’s unlike any waterfall on earth and it attracts more than one million visitors a year who are forever transformed by its magnitude and splendor.

Buenos Aires architecture is divided into three styles: neoclassical, art nouveau and art deco. These architectural styles provide insight into when and who built the city’s stylish neighborhoods.

Argentinian beef is world renowned. From having their own cuts of beef, grass feeding cattle in open pastures to implementing their “Asado” barbecuing technique that slightly smokes the beef. Meet lovers are sure to have a culinary experience to remember.

Argentina e3

Americans are always in a rush to get to their next destination, and often eat at a rushed pace. In Argentina they enjoy life at a much slower pace, so visitors can relax, slow down, and enjoy their meal and company.

Iguazu Falls in Argentina

The best time to visit Argentina is during the Southern Hemisphere’s fall and winter, from April to July, or during the Southern Hemisphere’s spring and summer, from October to January.

The temperatures in cities like Mendoza and Buenos Aires are consistently comfortable during the spring and early summer or fall and early winter, but the most dramatic changes in temperatures take place in the Subantarctic south at Patagonia during the winter months from May to September when snow and wind arrive, or the tropical north at Iguazu during the summer months from December to February when the region sees a large increase in rainfall. In the shoulder season of spring and fall, you will have fewer crowds and better temperatures to enjoy the entire country, top to tip.

Argentina - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Visit Buenos Aires during your Argentina tour.

Covering an area of close to 1 million sq. miles, Argentina has everything, ranging from natural beauty and sultry lifestyles to exotic cuisine and a splendid culture. Considering that the country gave the world things like futbol, beef and tango, a trip to Argentina is sure to be nothing short of spectacular.

The delightful Iguazu Falls, the enchanting Glaciar Perito Moreno, Patagonia… Argentina has its fair share of exhilarating natural beauty. It is home to beautiful wetlands, rustic mountains, vast arid deserts, steppes, Valdivian forests, salt flats, lake districts and ice fields and all kinds of birds and animals that come with these regions.

Tour Highlights

  • Dance the tango at a milonga in Buenos Aires, the city where the dance was invented
  • Visit the Iguazu Falls
  • Try ice hiking on Glacier Perito Moreno
  • See an opera at Teatro Colon (the third best opera house in the world)
  • Travel to The Hill of Seven Colors

Travel Tips

  • Argentinian cuisine is very meat heavy, and rare meatless dishes are often covered in cheese. If you're a vegetarian or a vegan, be sure to do your research beforehand to find a restaurant that caters to you.
  • When on a holiday in Argentina, do as the locals do. Slow down and find a new appreciation for time. Relax, enjoy your meals, and (if you can avoid it) try not to rush.
  • The idea of personal space doesn't always apply in Argentina. Expect locals to stand close to you when chatting. They may also reach out and touch you. Try to remember this is their sociable culture and is not intended to make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Counterfeit money is very common in Argentina. Always double check your notes. Look for the bill's clear hologram by holding it up to the natural light, and run your fingers over the pictured diplomat's suit to ensure it is textured.
  • Around Christmas time, the city of Buenos Aires shuts down almost completely as locals head to the coast. Shops and restaurants (even fast food chains) will likely be closed, so plan ahead if visiting at this time. Consider visiting when the weather is best during Argentinian fall (March to May) or spring (September to November).

Tours in Argentina - Questions and Answers

Though Argentinians are not considered to be very punctual, not respecting a schedule in a business meeting may be interpreted as being rude. Do not discuss politics and do not, under any circumstances, talk casually about the Falklands War (Argentines call it Guerra de las Malvinas, incidentally). If a type of herbal tea called ‘mate’, which is quite popular in Argentina, is offered to you in a small vessel, it is impolite to say ‘no’. (If you don’t enjoy it, it's okay to refuse the next round.) Argentines stand close to each other while speaking. Don’t back off—it may be considered discourteous.

Argentina is the world’s eighth-largest country, with a wide variety of landscapes. So, depending on the kind of trip you have in mind, you can visit the country throughout the year. Overall, the best time to visit Argentina is between December and February—the beaches are warm and welcoming. If you want to explore the spectacular wilderness of Patagonia , the ideal time is between December and March, though it can get crowded. March to May is perfect to cover Buenos Aires and the Lake District. Mid-June through to October in Argentina is great for winter-sports enthusiasts. The best ski conditions are from mid-July till early September. However, do note that July is the winter vacation month and sees local crowds in many ski resorts. More information here .

Though Argentina is not among the cheapest countries to visit, if you’re bringing in a higher-value currency, it will not seem very expensive. If budget is a constraint, it is possible to squeeze in a trip for as little as USD 40 a day (we’re talking hostel accommodation, public transport, etc). But for a more comfortable trip, be prepared to shell out upwards of USD 100. Typically, coastal towns like Del Plata and popular tourist destinations like Patagonia are more expensive. Pro tip: think US dollars and not Argentine pesos because the value of the local currency may not be what you’ve researched online.

We recommend a minimum of two weeks in Argentina , but for a truly comprehensive experience that takes in the entire length of the country, you’ll need 21 to 25 days. Though a three-week tour to Argentina would include internal flights, you will not only visit the best destinations but also discover some hidden gems. If you have limited time to spare, focus on a few places. So, in 7 days you can soak in the culture and urban rhythms of capital Buenos Aires and visit a few more highly rated destinations like Salta, Iguazu Falls, or Patagonia. For more details on how many days to spend in Argentina, see here .

English is not spoken widely in Argentina. You might meet younger people in big cities who speak English, and it is generally understood in the tourist industry, but beyond that don’t expect to find too many English speakers. Argentina’s official language is Spanish and most of the country’s 45 million people speak it. Anyone visiting from Spain or other Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico will not find it too hard to navigate the language barrier, though dialects and pronunciations are different. Italian comes second, with around 1.5 million speakers. Other languages with a significant number of speakers include Arabic, German and Yiddish.

Political protests and anti-government rallies are not uncommon in Argentina, especially in capital Buenos Aires. Like elsewhere in the world, these can turn violent at times, so avoid being around such demonstrations. While daytime is fun to explore cities, avoid walking on the streets at night. If you’re stuck somewhere, it’s best to wait for a taxi. Pickpocketing and mugging are among the more common crimes in Argentina. Make sure your valuables are hidden and not easily visible in open pocket areas. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying fancy accessories and electronic gadgets—this marks you out for petty thieves.

Buenos Aires is a liberal city and Argentines know their fashion—so you can experiment with clothes in the country’s capital. But there are some practical things to consider. For instance, it’s not cold enough to wear heavy-duty hiking clothes in winter. They scream ‘tourist’ from a mile. A light jacket should do. Summers are warm, and breathable cotton clothes make a lot of sense. You’re going to walk around quite a bit while exploring the city, so, ladies, go easy on the high heels—unless, of course, you’re going out to tango in a nightclub. At most other times, flats and sneakers are just fine.

While food costs vary from place to place, a fancy meal inclusive of wine in Buenos Aires is likely to be at least 30% lower than a big city in America or Europe. For more regular meals in Argentina, you can have an all-you-can-eat parrilla (barbeque) for USD 10–20. A meal at a budget restaurant can cost anything between USD 5 and 15 and for a higher-class restaurant up to USD 40. All these prices are, of course, tentative and the actual costs when you’re travelling may differ.

When is the best time to travel to argentina.

The best time to travel to Buenos Aires is in spring (September to November) and fall (March to May), as the summer can be hot and humid. For Bariloche and the Lake District, Mendoza, and Cordoba, the best time is the fall, when temperatures are more comfortable and these destinations are less crowded. For Patagonia, the best time is October to March, when the weather is warmer, and more tourist attractions can be visited. For skiing, the season runs from June to October. See all Argentina FAQ .

2. Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls is a mighty waterfall that sits on the border between Argentina and Brazil. The falls divide the Iguazu River into its upper and lower sections, with its longest drop measuring a modest 82 meters. But what it lacks in height it makes up for in width and flow. Iguazu is about 1.7 miles wide and water flows across almost all of its width, making it one of the largest waterfall systems in the world (many consider it the largest). A series of walkways let you explore the falls…

For thousands of years, humans have been roaming…

The Best Places to Visit in Patagonia

Wind, space, silence. In Patagonia, everything exists on a vaster scale. Sprawled out across the southern wilds of Chile and Argentina, this is where South America’s landmass peters out and then ends—having saved, magician-like, its most astonishing effects for last. Wandering its huge emptinesses, one comes face to face…

Six Things To Do In Bariloche, Argentina

Sapphire lakes that are absolutely still, mirroring the silent peaks around them. Cascades, like liquid smoke, plunging into icy rivers. A branching network of sandy trails, leading ever deeper into towering forests of thousand-year-old alerce trees…This is Argentina’s Lake District, a vast, primeval wilderness huddled…

Five Things To Do In El Calafate, Argentina

The town of El Calafate (pop. 20,000) is the tourist hub for exploring Los Glaciares National Park, the largest national park in Argentina. The park is named after the numerous glaciers that exist in the region, and which have helped carve out the stunning lakes and landscapes around El Calafate. So if calving glaciers…

El Chaltén, The Trekking Capital Of Argentina

The small Patagonian village of El Chaltén could well have been a forgotten frontier settlement were it not for the thousands of tourists who come here each year. Surrounded by stunning scenery and world-class trails, it’s a paradise for climbers and trekkers. And in 2015, the government officially recognized El Chaltén…

The Wildlife Of Patagonia: 8 Iconic Land And Marine Mammals

Patagonia is a vast and rugged region in the far south of South America. Shared between Argentina and Chile, this sparsely populated territory may — at first glance — seem barren and bleak. But wildlife spotters flock to Patagonia in the hopes of seeing some of its most iconic and intriguing animals, including both…

The Wildlife Of Patagonia: 7 Iconic Birds

Patagonia is home to more than 460 species of birds, from flightless rheas to tiny owls to massive Andean condors. Understandably, therefore, both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia attract birdwatchers from across the globe. Of the hundreds of bird species that live in the region, a handful can be considered…

A Guide To The Main Wine Regions In Mendoza, Argentina

The Mendoza Province of Argentina is one of the great wine regions of the world. The first vineyards were cultivated here in the late-16th century, followed by a wine boom in the 19th century that turned Mendoza into the largest wine producing region in Latin America. Today, the province produces about 70%…

In Mendoza, Argentina’s Wine Country, A Diverse Crop Of Tours

Sitting and sampling a glass of Malbec in the tasting room at La Rural winery in Mendoza, Argentina, I’m definitely feeling rather small. And I don’t just mean metaphorically small, owing to the fact that my technical knowledge when it comes to wine encompasses exactly two concepts, “red” and “white.”…

In Ushuaia, Argentina, Discovering A Land Of Extreme Beauty

Polar winds whip snow against me as I stand beneath the looming mountain. Gray afternoon half-light. It’s the end of the line. Granted, “end” in Ushuaia, Argentina, is a word that long ago passed beyond cliché, considering every empanadería, Claro cell-phone kiosk, and leather-goods outlet in town…

What travelers say about their trips to Argentina

Know where you want to travel in argentina, travel tips for argentina trips.

As with many places around the globe, the not-too-hot, not-too-cold shoulder seasons of spring and fall are wonderful times to visit Argentina. Since the Southern Hemisphere has opposite seasons to us here in the Northern Hemisphere, spring comes around from September through November, and fall is from March to May. The comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds you'll find during these times of year make for a more enjoyable experience on Argentina guided tours.

December through February marks the summer season in Argentina, which brings muggy weather and more crowds to Buenos Aires. Patagonia is also a popular destination for visitors who set out on Argentina travel packages during the summer, when the southern region experiences warm, sunny days. However, strong winds also blow through Patagonia during the the summer, and then lessen during spring and fall. Cold, rainy days are common during the winter, which goes from June through August.

Argentina tours offer the ideal mix of city and scenery. Head to the southernmost reaches of the country to explore one of the most pristine outdoor destinations visited on our Latin America tours : Patagonia. This picturesque region spans Argentina and Chile and boasts glaciers, wildlife, sprawling plains, and more. Cruise along the Perito Moreno Glacier face in the Los Glaciares National Park and stand in awe of Lago Argentino, a lake surrounded by mountains.

For even more outdoor adventure, add the Iguazú Falls extension on our Chile to Argentina: Santiago, Patagonia & Buenos Aires tour, or embark on our Rio, Iguazú Falls & Buenos Aire s tour, to see the Argentinian side of Iguazú Falls. This waterfall splashes down almost 300 feet and is one of South America’s top natural wonders.

Of course, no Argentina trips are complete without a stop in the country's vibrant capital, Buenos Aires. This cosmopolitan city has been nicknamed “The Paris of South America,” and for good reason. From its striking architecture and world-class fashion scene to its many park and museums, Buenos Aires is the place to go to get your Argentine culture fix.

Want to get to the heart of wine country while on Argentina trips? The city of Mendoza is the place to go. Try the signature sip, Malbec, and immerse yourself in history as you explore on a guided tour.

Calling all foodies—if delicious Latin American cuisine is what you're looking for, planning a trip to Argentina is a must. The country is known for its wine, lively food scene, and delicious meat dishes. In fact, Argentina is one of the largest consumers and exporters of beef in the world!

If you're more into vegetarian dishes or sweets, the country has more than enough to satisfy you on Argentina vacation packages. Here are a few of Argentina's most popular bites and culinary traditions:

Asado , a family-style barbecue of salt-rubbed meats, ribs, and chorizo sausages cooked over a fire pit on metal grills and crosses

Steak cooked in a parilla , an Argentine steakhouse that focuses on grilled meats

Ice cream, cookies called alfajores , and dulce de leche , a sweet honey-and-milk paste in pastries

Argentine empanadas , typically made with a flour-based dough and filled with ground beef, hard-boiled egg, olives, onions, and spices

Pizza in Buenos Aires, Latin America's unofficial "pizza capital"

Breaded meats called milanesas

Red Malbec wine

For a firsthand look at the city’s culinary culture, pop into an Argentinian cafe called a bodegon at 4pm to take part in the merienda , which is a small social meal consisting of breakfast goodies like pastries and coffee. Or, set out on our ** Food & Wine: Uruguay, Argentina & Chile **tour to try the best of the best.

Any trip is made instantly better when you have the right footwear, and Argentina tour packages are no exception! A good pair of walking shoes will get you comfortably from the bustling streets and sprawling parks of Buenos Aires to the trails of the remote Patagonia region. Trust us, your feet will thank you.

Speaking of Buenos Aires... this destination is a fashion lover's dream. It's been nicknamed “The Paris of South America," and people who live here like to look put together. While there's no need to stress about getting overly done up when you head out, you will feel most in step with the locals by wearing simple yet smart-looking clothes. As with any international trip, it's best to leave any expensive, flashy jewelry at home for Argentina small group tours; locals don't tend to wear it, so you'll only stand out as a tourist.

Bringing layers on Argentina group tours is also a good idea, as temperatures can vary from north to south. If you're traveling in the fall or winter, pack a warmer layer, rain coat, and hat to fend off the snow or strong winds you may come up against in Patagonia. No matter when you go, bring a camera and binoculars to get an up-close look at the scenery and wildlife.

Cowboy boots and dancing shoes

It has become cliché to say that Argentina is as much European as it is Latin; yet to arrive in Buenos Aires and discover this is actually true still surprises. With the Patagonian Andes as its glacial backbone, Argentina is a land of extreme wilderness, while its vast pampas are still home to roaming gauchos – the original South American cowboys. Had enough of the wild? The birthplace of the tango and the world's fifth-largest wine producer has enough high culture to satisfy the most discerning palate, plus a nightlife that'll keep you up early into the morning.

More information about Argentina

It’s time to open a bottle of Malbec and dive into the beautiful nation of Argentina, home to a dizzying array of bucket-list favorites and bursting with culture. A South American giant, Argentina occupies much of the cone-shaped end of the continent, making it the 8th-largest country and the largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world. A holiday to Argentina is sure to be a diverse experience, as the country’s greatest assets are its abundant natural beauty, from the epic icy landscapes of Ushuaia , at the literal ‘ End of the World’ , to the tropical rainforest that surrounds the Iguazu Falls. The capital city, Buenos Aires exudes a cosmopolitan charm and attracts artists and literary-types from around the world.

An intense city, Buenos Aires and its famous square Plaza de Mayo is filled with emotion and passion, from the sidewalk Tango dancers to the groups of friends and families spending balmy evenings on cafe terraces in the city plazas. With a distinctive creative atmosphere, Buenos Aires is the usual ‘jumping-off’ point for tours of Argentina . A legendary national cuisine, tantalizing wine scene and a fascinating cultural mix of Latin and European to boot, Argentina tours are a must for travel lovers.

History of Argentina

Like many South American countries, Argentina has a diverse and multi-faceted history. Before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th-century , indigenous communities had inhabited the land for millennia, the oldest evidence of which still exists at the archaeological site of Piedra Museo in the province of Santa Cruz. Parts of northern Argentina were already incorporated into the mighty Inca Empire when the Portuguese and later the Spanish arrived.

The Portuguese discovered the Rio de la Plata and when the Spanish conquistadors landed in 1536 , it wasn’t long until Buenos Aires was settled for the first time. Though no gold was found in the country, Spain established Argentina as part of the Viceroyalty of Rio de La Plata in 1776, and it played an important role in the administration of Spanish colonies in South America. On an Argentina package tour, you’ll be sure to notice the colonial architecture of the cities that transport you back to the days of the conquistadors.

Independence was won by Argentina in 1818, after an 8-year struggle, although civil war followed. From the mid- 1800s onwards the country saw a period of relative peace and stability and a surge of European immigration, particularly from Italy, which is reflected in many elements of Argentinian cuisine today. It wasn’t long until Argentina has grown into a very wealthy and prosperous country, but the Great Depression of the 1930s affected the economy greatly.

A military coup overthrew Isabel Perón in 1976 and saw a crackdown on leftist politics and state terrorism in the aftermath, a period known as the ‘Dirty War’ . Walking through the streets of Buenos Aires today, you can trace the turbulent history of the 20th-century through the different neighborhoods and monuments, an eye-opening experience on a trip to Argentina. Following the Falklands War of 1982, the dictatorship of Videla fell and a democratic election was held to establish a new government.

Nature in Argentina

A package holiday to Argentina is sure to focus on the spectacle of nature and its beautiful landscape. You can do it all in Argentina, from trekking in the Andes mountains , spotting whales in the Beagle Channel and learning to ride horses in the ‘wild west’ of the country. The highest point in Argentina is the staggering Aconcagua at almost 7,000 meters high in the province of Mendoza.

Many visitors to Argentina head straight for Patagonia , a sparsely populated region in the south, shared with Chile and famous for its magnificent mountains such as Fitz Roy , in the Argentinian side, which is accessed from El Chaltén in Argentina by the Los Glaciares National Park ; and Torres del Paine , in the Chilean border.

As well as breathtaking scenery, Argentinian Patagonia has coasts on both the Atlantic and Southern Oceans, home to seals, sea lions, whales, orcas, dolphins, and penguin colonies, so boat trips are a popular way to experience the region. Although there is so much to see in terms of natural wonders, there are a number of top sights that characterize any great tour to Argentina. The Tierra del Fuego National Park is the jewel in the crown of Patagonia and loved by all intrepid travelers that make the journey to its epic landscapes. It’s home to some of the most stunning scenery in the world and is a bird-watchers paradise, with species ranging from penguins to eagles. Wildlife lovers should keep a lookout for pumas who roam the rocky wilderness. Tierra del Fuego is often described as ‘ Patagonia in a nutshell’ and its capital, Ushuaia , are the southernmost city in Argentina and Punta Arenas in the Chilean side.

Another Patagonian treasure is, of course, the Perito Moreno glacier, Argentina’s most popular natural attraction and at a staggering 30 kilometers long it is one of the world’s largest freshwater reserves. Along with its immense size, the Perito Moreno is also incredible in that is is one of the few glaciers in existence to continue advancing, whilst most are retreating. Boat trips and glacier trekking are the best ways to get up close to the Perito Moreno .

In comparison to the snow-blanketed south of the country, the Iguazu Falls is another icon of Argentina. On the rainforested border with Brazil, lies this incredible natural wonder, composed of a 3 kilometer-long chain of cascades that make up one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights. The thundering sound of the falls with a move you as you come face-to-face with the walls of water on the fantastic network of walkways.

Culture in Argentina

Argentina boasts a highly sophisticated and complex culture known for its sultry Tango dancing and brilliant cuisine. In the cities, such as Buenos Aires , you can expect a plethora of museum, galleries, literary bars and a cosmopolitan culture composed of a mix between Italian and Spanish cultures; a result of immigration. A holiday to Argentina is incomplete without taking the time to soak up the melting-pot vibe of the big city Buenos Aires, discovering its famous neighborhoods, such La Boca, San Telmo, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, and Palermo.

On the other hand, in the wilds of Argentina’s Pampas region, traditional gaucho culture is alive in the many remote ranches and farms where horsemanship and cattle rearing reign supreme. Argentinian’s are social people and you’ll notice the warm hospitality if you take a trip to Argentina.

In the evenings the city is alive with families and friends spending time together and you’ll often see the passing around of special metal gourdes filled with mate, a herbal drink made from the yerba mate plant and traditional Argentinan custom. Argentinians are proud of their national achievements such as the impressive number of Argentinan Nobel Laureates ; a total of five in a range of different fields.

Experience one of the treasures of South America with a tour package of Argentina. From the artistic capital of Buenos Aires to the dream-like landscapes of Patagonia , Argentina excites and amazes with its bucket-list-worthy sights and complex culture and history. So, set off on an unforgettable journey to the ‘End of the World’ and let your ears and heart be filled by the rhythm of Tango music.

The 12 best places to visit in Argentina

Argentina is one of the most popular destinations in South America , and it isn't hard to see why.

Home to lively cities and tranquil wildernesses, majestic waterfalls and soaring mountains, not to mention wildlife-filled wetlands, glorious architecture, rich culture and renowned steakhouses, it's the whole South American package.

But Argentina is a big country, measuring 3800 km (2360 miles) from end to end, so there's some serious ground to cover.

For those unsure where to start, we can help you narrow it down with this list of our favorite 12 places that shouldn’t be missed, from  national parks carved by glaciers to vineyards in the shadow of the Andes.

1. Buenos Aires

Best for eating out

Sultry tango clubs and cacophonous football matches, beautiful barrios (neighborhoods) and historic cemeteries, world-class museums and raucous nightlife – Buenos Aires has everything you need for an immersive, big city experience.

Above all, the Argentine capital is a fantastic place to eat out . Its parrillas (steakhouses) – such as Don Julio , named the best restaurant in Latin America by the World's 50 Best Restaurants  – serve what could be the finest beef on the planet.

You'll also find a multitude of international joints, serving everything from Armenian to Peruvian cuisine, plus an ice cream parlor on virtually every block.

Planning tip: Buenos Aires is a big city, so it pays to base yourself close to the areas you want to explore. The neighborhoods of Recoleta , Retiro, Palermo and San Telmo offer a great mix of sights, places to eat, and local character.

2. The Pampas

Best for experiencing cowboy life

The flat, fertile grasslands that cover much of central Argentina are known as the Pampas , a place dominated by the cattle industry and synonymous with gaucho (cowboy) culture.

For an introduction to rural life, head to the town of San Antonio de Areco , whose museum and annual Dia de la Tradición festival showcase all things gaucho .

Planning tip: To get the best from a trip to the Pampas, stay a few nights at one of the many estancias (ranches) scattered across the region, which offer horseback riding, polo lessons and traditional asados (barbecues).

3. Buenos Aires province

Best for beaches

Argentina isn’t well known for its beaches , but the Atlantic coast south of Buenos Aires is dotted with appealing seaside resorts.

Although big, brash Mar del Plata draws the largest crowds, there are several smaller, quieter and more appealing stretches of sand. They include the forest-fringed beaches of Cariló, Mar de las Pampas and Mar Azul, great spots for sunbathers and novice surfers alike.

Planning tip:  Although you can explore the beaches of Buenos Aires province by bus, hiring a car makes things a lot easier.

4. Iguazú Falls

Best for epic waterfalls

Shared between Argentina and Brazil , stretching for 3km (1.85 miles) and flanked by subtropical rainforest, this magnificent string of waterfalls is one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth.

A network of trails, walkways and bridges run through the surrounding national park, allowing visitors a close-up look at the 250-plus cascades and cataracts.

The centerpiece is the Garganta del Diablo (“Devil’s Throat”), a seething mass of white water that produces a deafening roar and sends up great clouds of spray.

5. Parque Nacional Iberá

Best for birdwatching

The hot, humid wetlands of this recently created national park in northeastern Argentina are home to more than 360 species of birds, including kingfishers, jabiru storks and roseate spoonbills.

Dubbed the “Argentine Pantanal,” the reserve is undergoing a major rewilding process that is introducing rare or endangered creatures, such as red-shouldered macaws.

Its reed-lined channels and lagoons are best explored by boat, from which visitors can also expect to spot an abundance of mammals and reptiles, from caimans to capybaras, the world’s biggest rodent.

Planning tip: The best way to explore Parque Nacional Iberá is on the water. Guided boat and kayak trips are easy to arrange in the village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, the main gateway to the park.

Train in Santa Province, Argentina

Best for historic architecture

In the far northwest of Argentina, near the Chilean and Bolivian borders, this charming city is known as “Salta la Linda” (“Salta the Beautiful”).

On the edge of the Lerma valley, overlooked by mountains, Salta is filled with historic mansions, churches, municipal buildings and plazas, some of which date back to the city’s founding in 1582.

It also has a varied cultural scene encompassing excellent museums and galleries – such as the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña , which explores Inca culture and the practice of human sacrifice – and atmospheric folk-music clubs called peñas .

7. Mendoza province

Best for wine tasting

Argentina is the world’s fifth biggest wine producer and the industry’s heartland is Mendoza province.

In the midwest of the country, close to the Andes, the region is carpeted with vineyards and wineries, many of which offered guided tours, tastings, accommodations, and even the chance to help out with the harvest.

And while Mendoza is rightly famous for its Malbec, plenty of other delicious wines – reds, whites and rosés – are also produced in the province.

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to coincide with the grape harvest from February to April. Expect plenty of demand for accommodations during the popular Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia wine festival in March, Mendoza's biggest celebration.

Fisherman

8. The Argentine Lake District

Best for stunning landscapes

Glimmering bodies of water, emerald-green forests, and towering mountains and volcanoes dusted with snow – it’s not hard to understand why Argentina's Lake District is a traveler hot spot.

The gateway to this verdant region, the northwestern part of Patagonia, is the attractive lakeside city of Bariloche . Here you can pick from a wealth of outdoor activities – from hiking and mountain biking to fishing, kayaking and skiing – inside the surrounding Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi .

Planning tip: In winter (corresponding to the northern hemisphere summer), Bariloche becomes Argentina's premier ski hub . It's a busy time at the resorts around the city, but the powder is some of the world's best.

9. Cueva de los Manos Pintados

Best for ancient art

In a remote canyon surrounded by the Patagonian steppe, the Cave of the Painted Hands has an enigmatic collection of rock art created between 13,000 and 9500 years ago.

This Unesco World Heritage Site takes its name from the 800-plus stenciled outlines of human hands covering the walls.

Red, white, black or ochre in color, their purpose remains a tantalizing mystery. There are also images of pumas, guanacos (a wild relative of the llama) and rheas, as well as hunting scenes. Guided tours are offered from the towns of Perito Moreno and Posadas.

10. Península Valdés

Best for whale watching

The frigid waters off Península Valdés , a chunk of northeastern Patagonia jutting out into the Atlantic, teem with life.

A breeding ground for endangered southern right whales, who arrive in their hundreds between mid-June and mid-December, they are also home to elephant seals, sea lions and orcas, as well as more than 180 species of birds.

Accessed from the town of Puerto Madryn, this Unesco World Heritage Site offers a variety of boat, kayaking and diving trips, though marine life can often be spotted from the shore.

Further down the coast, 250km (155 miles) south of Puerto Madryn, Punta Tombo has South America’s largest colony of Magellanic penguins.

11. Ushuaia

Best for uplifting isolation

A famous sign in Ushuaia informs you that this is the “Fin del Mundo” – the physical end of the world. The far-flung capital of Argentine Tierra del Fuego sits on the shore of the Beagle Channel, more than 3000km (1865 miles) south of Buenos Aires.

It is the gateway to rugged Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego , the world’s most southerly railway line, and several winter sports centers, as well as the embarkation point for cruises to Antarctica, just 1000km (620 miles) to the south.

People hiking on the Perito Moreno glacier, Argentina

12. Parque Nacional Los Glaciares

Best for awesome glaciers

Spanning more than 5956 sq km (2300 sq miles) of iceberg-filled lakes, jagged Andean peaks and – most notably – gigantic glaciers, this park in southern Patagonia is one of Argentina’s signature tourist attractions.

The southern section – famous for the Perito Moreno Glacier – is accessed from the touristy town of El Calafate , while the northern part, a haven for hikers and climbers, is best visited from the rustic village of El Chaltén .

Planning tips: All manner of treks are possible from El Chaltén and El Calafate, from day hikes to multi-day adventures, and many routes can be attempted without a guide.

Say Hueque was a wonderful tour company. All our pickups and transfers went perfectly, Everyone was either early or right on time. That takes a lot of anxiety out of traveling. Our Hotels, Hotel Classico and the Jardin de Iguazu were excellent, Both were very clean with great breakfasts and had plenty of hot water!!!. The Hotels were both perfectly situated, close to GREAT restaurants and attractions Your tour guide in Buenos Aires was Romina B. She was wonderful and Very knowledgeable about the city along with, the entire country and region. Ask for Romina if you're looking for a great guided tour experience. She picked us up and dropped us at the airport, which was a nice touch. The trip to Iguazu Falls (both the Argentina and Brazil side) was totally worth it. The cooking class called the Argentine Experience was also a lot of fun. The Tango Show with an Excellent 3-course, steak dinner, including a very nice bottle of Malbec, was one of the highlights of the trip!!!!!!

Highlights El Calafate & El Chalten Tour

Highlights El Calafate & El Chalten

Our trip to Patagonia is something that I will never forget. I was willing to travel to Patagonia a long time ago and everything went as it was planned. Hotel Las Dunas and Hotel Chalten Suites were very nice hotels to stay and a special note to Pablo, the guide who joined us at El Chalten during the treks to Laguna de los tres and Torre Mount. We will definetely come back to Patagonia soon.

Buenos Aires to Ushuaia or Viceversa - 11 Days

The trip was amazing! But be prepared to do some research on your own about what to do and where to go. Some really great suggestions were given, but most of the time you have to figure out things to do on your own. Also, check the weather in ALL cities before you go. They are different everywhere. Overall great trip and would do it again.

The guide and porter, Pedro and Miguel, were fantastic. Pedro is very knowledgeable about the route, the terrain, what conditions are safe and the best techniques to mitigate for icy, snowy terrains etc. He also knew everything about the areas history, culture, traditions, wildlife etc. He was very patient and also kept up the motivation on what is a very demanding route. Miguel was our porter. He is a stoic quiet man but funny, and friendly. Miguel has some fantastic stories too. He is a trained mountain rescuer so I felt very safe with him accompanying us on some of the more challenging passes. The route itself was difficult and risky in places, but enjoyable. It is not for the faint hearted but the risk was rewarded with amazing views. Recommendations for the tour opporator would be to send the itinerary in English and perhaps a packing list.

I got to see all the things I wanted to see but I missed being part of a group. I wish the tour had suggested more things to fill my down time, even suggested walkable restaurants and such. I think it is important to be clear about the difficulty hiking on both sides of the waterfalls of Iguassu - I struggled with mobility.

The Trek with Edu was a great experience for both me and my companion. It was just us two and Edu which made for a very relaxing experience for the trip. Edu is a great guide. All the good qualities you’d hope for from a guide - patience, well informed, fun, a great cook and good company. His relaxed attitude towards guiding us helped make the trip a very enjoyable experience. Never did we feel rushed by him (and I stop to take A LOT of photos!) and he found the right balance between engaging in conversation but also allowing us our own space to chat between each other. Oh he takes great photos too! And was always happy and willing to help get good shots of us amongst the beautiful surroundings. The route it’s self was perfect for us and we were blessed with some great weather on the first day with many clear and sunny views of Mt Fitzroy while we climbed.

Clinic Students Travel to Argentina, Geneva To Observe Evolution of Justice

Grace Zipperer ’24, Professor Camilo Sánchez, Sabrina Mato ’24 and Jessica Williams ’25 attended the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva, Switzerland, to observe the interaction between independent experts, governments and civil society members. Courtesy photos

In recent months, Professor Camilo Sánchez and several of his students logged over 17,000 miles working on human rights issues as part of the International Human Rights Law Clinic he directs at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Over spring break, Sánchez traveled with four students to Salta Province in northern Argentina on a criminal justice reform project conducted under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. Then later in March, Sánchez and three students attended the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held at the U.N. headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Traveling across continents — and from a Spanish-speaking nation to a French-speaking one — was undoubtedly exhausting, yet the invaluable learning and significant impact on our clients and projects made it entirely worthwhile,” Sánchez said.

The U.S. Embassy in Argentina had worked with the State Department’s Diplomacy Lab to find a team of university researchers to evaluate and report back on how the country is handling its transition to an adversarial federal criminal justice system and away from an “inquisitorial” model. Once common in Latin America and still prevalent across much of continental Europe, the inquisitorial model allows judges to conduct their own investigations, rather than tasking each party with marshaling their evidence and presenting their case.

Camilo Sanchez and students

A team of clinic students — which included Zach Zamoff ’25, Chloe Chiles ’25 , Lillie Stephens ’25 and Grace Zipperer ’24 — worked on the project. Luis Santiago Genovesi, a current LL.M. student and Sánchez’s research assistant, also joined the students for the research.

The students personally interviewed judges, prosecutors and public defenders involved in the reform, accompanied by Jessica Kuhn and Jérémie Swinnen from the U.S. Embassy in Argentina. The team met with the ambassador on their return and presented their findings to the Diplomacy Lab.

“It was pretty remarkable — we had dinner with the top judge, the top prosecutor and the top public defender in Salta,” Zamoff said. “I was really grateful for the opportunity to learn from these people, and it really showed me the value of public service.”

The students learned firsthand how the new system has improved justice administration in the regions where it is being implemented, including faster, more transparent justice and a more strategic approach to combating federal crimes affecting the area, according to Sánchez. It also “humanizes” justice, by shifting from an emphasis on written filings to in-person hearings that increase the contact between defendants and the justice system.

“A lot of these reforms are trying to meet the ideals of Argentina’s founding fathers, who included the right to a jury trial in their constitution,” Zamoff said. “Argentina’s Constitution is very much based on the U.S. Constitution, and the rights of the accused are more compatible with an adversarial system.”

Before traveling to Argentina, the students started working on the project in the fall term, conducting document research and interviews with judges, prosecutors, public defenders, litigating attorneys, government officials and Argentine academics to learn more about the transition and its challenges.

The students met with Marc Stanley, the U.S. ambassador to Argentina, who is a former trial lawyer. Stanley was “eager” to hear their initial impressions and advise on the ongoing research process for the Diplomacy Lab report, Sánchez said.

Camilo Sanchez and students

The students shared their preliminary results April 19 at the Diplomacy Lab Fair at the State Department in Washington, D.C., in a presentation to State Department officers, peers from the DipLab network and representatives from other federal agencies.

Twelve thousand miles later, Sánchez, Zipperer and two other students — Sabrina Mato ’24 and Jessica Williams ’25 — were in Geneva to observe the work of independent experts who report to the U.N. Human Rights Council on their human rights investigations in various countries of concern.

The clinic advises several partners on similar matters, so Sánchez said it was crucial to observe the interaction between independent experts, governments and civil society members. Understanding the council’s modus operandi enables the clinic to safely advise clients who need assurances of anonymity and protection, Sánchez said.

“We strategically chose to attend during the presentations of reports by special rapporteurs and investigative missions — panels of three independent experts — on country situations like Iran, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela and North Korea, as these are most relevant to our clinic’s cases,” Sánchez said.

After a rapporteur or investigative mission presents its report to the council, the state under scrutiny is given the opportunity to respond. To foster an “interactive dialogue,” the president of the council then opens the floor to comments from other states and civil society organizations, Sánchez said.

The sessions made a particular impression on Mato, who left Cuba with her family as a child. Cuba is a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council, despite U.S. concerns about its human rights record and treatment of political dissidents.

“Having just gone back there a couple months ago to visit family, the actual situation there is really heartbreaking,” Mato said. “It was very frustrating to me to hear their representative talk the U.N. lingo about supporting human rights.”

Still, she was struck by how much advocacy and dialogue is going on informally behind the scenes.

“There are a lot of informal chats, like coffee chats and side conversations, and it seems like people are willing to talk,” Mato said. “There is a lot of change being made, we’re just not seeing it as the public — we only see their final two-minute speech.”

Zipperer, who attended a session on Syria, has worked extensively with Syrian refugees. She has been awarded a two-year fellowship from Immigrant Justice Corps to work for the Empire Justice Center on behalf of unaccompanied children seeking asylum.

The U.N. Human Rights Council sessions also attract various experts, academics and seasoned human rights defenders, according to Sánchez. The students met with Professor Elizabeth Salmon of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, who is the first female special rapporteur on North Korea; lawyer Anexa Alfred, an expert on the rights of indigenous people; and professionals from the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

“Attending the Human Rights Council sessions was highly instructive, particularly in regard to my work as an advocate for refugees,” Zipperer said. “From interviewing criminal justice attorneys in Argentina to meeting with attorneys and professionals at the U.N., the field experiences in this clinic far exceeded my expectations.”

Some of the sessions were held in the iconic Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. An enormous art installation by Miquel Barceló hangs from the center of the room’s ceiling, 100 tons of paint hand-sculpted into multi-hued stalactites.

“They say the ceiling reflects the complexity and diversity of the human condition,” Sánchez said. “I think it’s such a privilege for our students to travel and directly encounter the diverse complexities of human rights, from local to global levels, and all their interactions.”

Founded in 1819, the University of Virginia School of Law is the second-oldest continuously operating law school in the nation. Consistently ranked among the top law schools, Virginia is a world-renowned training ground for distinguished lawyers and public servants, instilling in them a commitment to leadership, integrity and community service.

Summer travel is upon us, and maybe this year you've got your sights set on somewhere more far-flung than the United States. Travel abroad can be incredibly enriching and full of new experiences you can't get at home.

However, the cost to travel internationally can sometimes be prohibitive. Because of this, GOBankingRates contacted several travel experts to recommend the most affordable countries for Americans to visit right now -- like these seven.

Charles Neville, with JayWay Travel , a specialist European custom tour provider, recommends Albania for food lovers.

He says, "Expect exceptional local produce and abundant fresh fish and seafood from the Adriatic and Ionian seas, combined with hearty traditional meat dishes, and more-than-decent local wine. Hotels work out to less than half what you'd pay for an equivalent property in western Europe."

Alex Gillard, the founder of Nomad Nature Travel , also raves about Albania, calling it "a great, relatively undiscovered country to visit as an American tourist."

He adds, "Depending on the season, you can get a 500 to 600 dollar round-trip flight. I've spent months in Albania and it is very safe, the food is an affordable and incredible mix of Greek, Italian and local fare, and you can rent a car and get around their beautiful country for very cheap."

She calls it one of the most affordable countries in the world to visit right now, where visitors "get double the pesos for their dollars." She recommends coastal Patagonia around Puerto Madryn to see whales, elephant seals, sea lions, and dolphins.

Andy Turlington, owner and travel advisor at Wildest Dreams Bookings in North Carolina, recommends Cuba, which is a short flight from Florida -- only about 100 miles from Key West.

"Cuba [has] interesting architecture, and the cars are a step back in time. Hotels in Havana start at about 50 U.S. dollars per night, but they have an Airbnb equivalent called 'Casa Particulars,' and many of them can be had for roughly 30 U.S. dollars per night."

<p>"Cuenca, Ecuador is a great, affordable, and interesting place to live, especially if you want to practice Spanish," said <a href="http://intentionaltravelers.com" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michelle Chang</a>, an entrepreneur and travel blogger. "It's also not so exciting as to be distracting from getting work done."</p> <p>Living on a shoestring budget is easy in Cuenca. </p> <p>"Ecuador uses the US dollar, but the cost of living is less than half and so far, their inflation rate has remained below ours," Chang said.</p>

This South American country is also extremely affordable. Turlington says, "You can easily get by in this country on about 30 to 50 U.S. dollars a day."

He especially recommends the capital city of Quito, where meals can usually be had for less than five U.S. dollars. Additionally, a taxi will cost about two dollars "to pretty much anywhere," and the bus costs about 35 cents. "Hotels can easily be had for less than 35 U.S. dollars a night, and for the ultra-cheap, they have plenty of hostels as well for about 10 U.S. dollars."

<p>A country that's super affordable for an American tourist is Panama, according to Becca Siegel and Dan Gold, owners of the travel blog <a href="https://www.halfhalftravel.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener">HalfHalfTravel.com</a>. "The reason is that flights are often cheap from major hubs, especially if you can fly to Miami first, or through Miami with a short layover."</p> <p>Once you land in Panama, they say that food, tours and accommodation are extremely affordable. "In Panama City alone, you can go walking in Casco Viejo, see the Panama Canal, excellent museums and experience great nightlife and culture."</p> <p>An extra bonus is that Panama uses the U.S. Dollar, so you won't have to do any currency exchanges, which they say is "super convenient for lots of American visitors."</p>

<p>South Africa isn’t often mentioned as one of the most tax-unfriendly nations in the world, but perhaps it’s being overlooked. Located at the very bottom of Africa’s continent, this country known for its safaris, minerals and beautiful landscapes taxes its citizens 45% on the high end, with corporations paying a flat 28% tax, regardless of industry. Overall, taxes contribute 27% to South Africa’s GDP. </p>

South Africa

Todd Sarouhan, owner of Go Visit San Diego and Go Visit Costa Rica, recommends Cape Town, South Africa for an affordable travel experience.

He says, "The most affordable countries are the ones where the exchange rate is in favor of the US Dollar. Cape Town is no stranger to being voted the best city in the world, the last time and for the seventh time running in 2019. Cape Town is a coastal gem, lying in the shadow of a cloud-hugged mountain where wine flows, penguins waddle and there's always something to do."

<p>While everyone has fantasies about retiring at age 40 or 50, the reality is that few people can afford this luxury, thanks in part to longer life expectancies. No matter how large your nest egg might be — or how frugal your lifestyle — retiring too early can ruin your well-laid financial plans and affect your quality of life down the line.</p>

Turkey is a great option for tourists wanting to go to Europe, Turlington says. "The lira has been greatly depreciated over the last 2 years or so, making Turkey a bargain hunter's paradise."

Istanbul offers some incredible cuisine, and plenty of historical locations and different architecture and religious sites. Istanbul has copious amounts of good hotels in the 50 US Dollar range as well. Armenia and Georgia are also lower cost options in this area of Europe.
