Aldi Diaper Review: Are Little Journey Diapers Any Good?

Aldi diaper review : are little journey diapers any good.

Parents are looking for information on more store-brand diapers, so I’ve put together this Aldi diaper review to answer your questions!

Low-cost grocery store Aldi launched its Little Journey line of baby products in the summer of 2016. Although it’s been around for some time, parents like you want to know about the quality of Little Journey diapers, and for good reason. Diapers, along with formula, are expensive! Your baby will use thousands of diapers before potty training,  so every penny makes a difference!

Aldi diaper review summary

aldi diaper review - front of diaper

Overall, Aldi diapers are good for store brand diapers. They absorb well, fit well, and have wetness indicators. That is to say, they will work just fine for most children.

However, if your child is prone to diaper rash, diaper blowouts, or diaper leaks, I recommend investigating a name-brand or specialized diaper for your child’s needs

Little Journey diapers are less soft than name brand diapers like Huggies and Pampers. But the softness is similar to the softness of other store brand

Wetness Indicator

Aldi diapers do have a wetness indicator that’s visible on the front and back. Like many other diaper brands, it starts out yellow and turns blue when it gets wet. This feature is helpful for infants who need frequent diaper changes.

Waistband

aldi diaper review- waistband

Like most store-brand diapers, Little Journey diapers do not have an elastic waistband. This is usually fine for most babies, but if your baby has diaper blowouts, try a brand like Huggies or Costco to keep the mess contained!

Leg cuffs help keep the diaper snug against your baby’s thighs and prevent leaks. The leg cuffs on Aldi diapers are pretty sturdy. My daughter did not have any leaks out the legs even when wearing them overnight!

Aldi diaper review- Fit

little journey formula price

Aldi diapers are very bulky! They are even longer than Huggies, which are sort of baggy to begin with! The Aldi diapers will hang down more between your child’s legs. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but is one of the downsides to a store brand diaper.

Check out this separate in-depth review of Target’s Up and Up Diapers !

Size up indicators

Little Journey diapers do not have size up indicators like other brands such as Target’s Up & Up, Pampers, and Huggies.

Size up indicators are a useful feature that let parents know when their baby is ready to move up a size. However, you can tell when to change diaper sizes without the indicators. Check if the diaper leaves red marks on your baby’s stomach, back, or legs. This means the diaper is too tight, and it’s time to change sizes. Or, if your baby’s diaper tends to leak, it may mean the diaper is too small and time to go up a size!

Diaper Tabs

Like some other store brand diapers, Aldi diaper tabs leave a lot to be desired. The only sticky-velcro part is the area between my two fingers, which is about a quarter of an inch wide!

That being said, I did not have any issues with my daughter pulling off the diaper, or the diaper falling off.

Aldi Diaper Review- Absorbance

Time for the fun science test! I mixed some green food coloring with water, and poured it into the diaper 1/4 cup (60 ml) at a time to see how much it would absorb!

little journey formula price

After about four cups of water, the diaper stopped absorbing water quickly. It would puddle up on top of the diaper or in between the leg cuff and the diaper pad, and then soak up after a few seconds.

little journey formula price

After 5 cups of water, the Little Journey diaper was full!

But what does that mean?

Aldi diapers are not particularly absorbent compared to other brands. I’ve tested a number of brands, like Target’s Up & Up diapers, and they hold much more water- 7 cups for a size 5! That’s 29% more.

That being said, does it really matter? Will your kid ever pee 5 cups worth before you change their diaper? Probably not. But if your kid pees a lot at night, you may want to use Aldi diapers during the day and another, more absorbent brand, at night.

Are Aldi diapers good?

Aldi diapers are as good as other store brand diapers, like Target and Walmart. They do not have all the features of Pampers or Huggies . But they work for many babies, and are cheaper than name brands.

Conclusions: Aldi diaper review

Aldi’s Little Journey diapers will work well for most babies. Similar to most store brand diapers, Aldi’s diapers are low cost but lack premium features like an elastic waistband, size up indicators, and extra absorbency.

If you are still on the fence after reading my Aldi diaper review, I recommend buying a small package of Aldi diapers, which are typically around $8-10. Use them during the day and see how they work for your child.

Aldi Diapers Review: Should You Try “Little Journey” Diapers?

Aldi’s “Little Journey” Diapers Review: Are They Worth It?

Can you really keep baby happy and healthy with cheap Aldi diapers?

Image of the Aldi Diapers

As mom’s we have all done it. Tried to save a few dollars by purchasing the store brand of something, only to take it home and find out that it sucks. Terribly . I remember one time I bought the generic Oreos because they were $2 cheaper a package. When I got home and my husband and daughter saw them, you would have thought that the world had ended. Nobody would eat them, and the next day my husband went and bought the real deal, full price and all.

On the other hand, every once in a while you discover a gem in the generic section. For example, our local grocery store has their store brand of barbeque sauce that is better than any other kind. AND it’s less than a dollar for a bottle. SCORE! When I first heard about generic Aldi’s diapers, I was thinking they would be more like the generic Oreos, but I was shocked to find out that they really are pretty decent diapers! There are a few issues with them, but nothing that the big brand diapers don’t have complaints of too.

Do Aldi Diapers Meet Your Diaper Needs?

Image of the Aldi Diapers

If you have babies, or children that used to be babies, you know the importance of a good diaper. They need to have no funky diaper smell to them, prevent leaks and rashes, stay dry through the night (if you are lucky enough to have a baby that sleeps through the night!), stay closed, and be cheap. Sounds impossible right? Well Aldi’s Little Journey diapers pretty much meet all of those standards, which is awesome.

If you don’t know what smell I am referring to, then you must not use Pampers diapers. It’s this cheap baby powder like smell that doesn’t remind you of a clean baby the way that actual baby powder does. I don’t notice the same smell from Huggies diapers or from the Little Journey diapers. And being pregnant right now, I smell EVERYTHING.

The Little Journey diapers do not have that smell to them that drives me crazy. They don’t really smell like anything at all, which is fantastic!

A diaper is made for keeping stuff inside, right? That is it’s one true purpose. So a diaper that leaks is a failure. Diapers can leak for many reasons. It can be too full, loose fitting at the top or around the legs. Little Journey diapers claim that they have 12 hours of no leaks. And is it true? Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t know because I don’t go 12 hours without changing a diaper. But they don’t leak during a normal day of diaper changes, including naps.

Many people complain that these diapers are too thin and that they have more of a plastic/papery feel to them than other diapers. I don’t think that there is really a problem with that as long as they work. For those babies that have leaks in the name brand diapers, you will probably still have a problem with leaks in these as well. If you are lucky like me though and don’t have a problem with leaks normally, then the Little Journey diapers are fully functional and impressive.

Diaper rashes. We’ve all had experience with them. There is nothing worse than changing a diaper on a little one with a rash. The Aldi’s diapers are infused with Vitamin E and Aloe to help protect the skin. However, because they are thinner, they don’t seem to pull the urine away from your baby’s bottom like other diapers. Also, they aren’t as soft as Pampers Swaddlers .

If you are using these diapers, I would just suggest changing your baby’s diaper pretty often. Also, if they already have a rash, I would definitely use a barrier rash cream with every diaper change and I would probably use something that does pull the pee away from the body, like Huggies or Pampers. (A little lesson from a nurse. Pee and poop have enzymes in them that break down skin. If they are left against the skin, you get a diaper rash. If the pee isn’t being pulled away from the skin and into the absorbent part of the diaper, then it is easier to get a rash in a shorter amount of time.)

Stay Dry Through the Night

I am very lucky to have a 19 month old that sleeps like a champ through the night, which is around 11 hours. Normally he wears Huggies through the night. Probably once or twice a week he does have some leakage around the diaper, but it is very minimal. There will only be a tiny amount on his pajamas, not even enough to have to change the sheets.

I would not suggest using the Aldi’s Little Journey diapers overnight because of the fact that they are thinner and they don’t pull the urine away as much. If the brand name diapers leak for me, then I don’t think that the Aldi’s brand would be any better. Also, I don’t like going that long not changing his diaper if the pee is just sitting against his skin.

Stay Closed

Picture this: Your baby is playing in the living room. You get up for a minute or two and came back to him diaper-less and poop in his hands. If you haven’t actually seen it in real life, it’s coming eventually. The Little Journey diapers do stay closed and they have a stretchable waist as well as side panels that stretch to close perfectly around your baby’s tummy. The sticky part is actually sticky and won’t open up when they are playing or running around.

Hint: If your baby is prone to taking their diaper off, keep underwear on over it and pants. I know if may sound like an obvious plan, but I had to learn that one the hard way.

Great Price

Diapers add up so very quickly. Especially is baby gets a rash or is eating and growing a lot, you may go through up to 10 diapers per day! So let’s do some quick diaper math. Let’s say you currently spend $0.25 cents per diaper and buy a pack of 104 big brand diapers. You use 9 diapers a day, so you are spending $2.25 a day . That adds up to roughly $67.50 a month . Then you go buy yourself a pack of 96 Aldi diapers and pay only $0.13 per diaper. For 9 diapers, your cost is $1.17 a day and $35.10 a month . In a year, that adds up to almost $389 in savings . If you have multiple children in diapers, saving that much is awesome!

Currently, I use Amazon and subscribe monthly to diapers. I have enough items that I subscribe to each month so that I can get a discount, plus it is delivered to my house and I don’t have to go anywhere to get them. I also don’t have to watch the sales for when they are cheaper. Even with the discount that I get, the Aldi’s diapers are half the price of Pampers and Huggies . Although the number of diapers that they sell in a package are less than other brands, the price per diaper is half the cost.

More About Aldi Diapers

Image of the Aldi Diapers

If you don’t know what Aldi’s is, you must live under a rock. Seriously . This grocery chain that originated in Germany has been in the United States since 1976 and has close to 2,000 stores nationwide. They have a no-frills shopping experience which includes no grocery bags, only a few people working, and require you to pay a refundable quarter in order to use a buggy. Their prices are amazing and they have many generic products, some good and some bad. But their generic diapers, called Little Journey diapers, are something to rave about.

The Little Journey diapers, just like the big brands ,come in sizes Newborn all the way up to size 6. They also have training pants size 3t to 4t. The regular packs vary in count from 23 to 50 per package depending on the size while the club packs range from 60 to 96 per package. The diapers seem similar to Luvs and Target’s Up and Up brand, although they are even cheaper.

The Least You Can Do is Try Them

Aldi’s has a fabulous return policy . If you buy the diapers and don’t like them, you can return them to the store. The store’s website says:

A replacement or refund will be offered for non-food ALDI find items, alcohol, national brands, or non-quality related issues.

(On a side not, who returns alcohol? I have tried their cheap wine there before and it should come with an individual packet of Tylenol for the headache it will cause the next morning.)

Overall Recommendation for Aldi Diapers

I like the Little Journey diapers for certain uses. I don’t think you should use them for the following:

  • Newborns (I would use the Pampers Swaddlers because they are softer and because their skin is so sensitive at that age)
  • Babies with sensitive skin or current rashes
  • Overnight (I would stick with a thicker diaper. They also make Huggies Overnights for babies that pee a lot.)

For diapers that work better in these situations, check out our best diaper article.

Aldi diapers are best for the following:

  • During the day when you change their diaper frequently
  • For babies with normal skin and no rash

Using big brand diapers and Aldi diapers might be a little inconvenient. But consider the savings if you use one brand name diaper overnight and then use Aldi diapers for daytime.

FAQ’s

How much do diapers cost.

Although the price range varies by brand and model (even by week) average cost for a diaper is $0.20 or 5 for a dollar. The bigger the diaper, the greater the per-diaper cost, of course. See the diaper cost calculator .

Are Aldi diapers hypoallergenic?

Yes, Aldi’s Little Journey diapers are hypoallergenic.

How many diapers will a newborn use?

On average, about 10 diapers per day, 70 per week, 300 per month.

How do you determine diaper fit?

First, check the weight ranges given on diaper packages and buy the size that most nearly matches your child’s weight (erring on the larger diaper if your child is on the margin). The installed diaper should rise to just below the umbilical cord or belly button. There should be some give in the elastic around the legs and waist; still the diaper should fit snugly to avoid leaks. If you see red marks around your child’s waist or legs, the diaper is almost certainly too small.

Are pull ups more absorbent than diapers?

No guarantees here, but they should be similar in absorbability, since they are made of the same materials. The primary difference is a more flexible fit around the waist, to allow your child to pull the diaper up and down for potty training.

What’s a good overnight diaper?

There are several good options, but Huggies OverNites, Pampers Pure, Pampers Baby Dry, and Pampers Overnight Swaddlers are three good name-brand options.

How much does baby formula cost?

How much does baby formula cost?

$40 – $300 cost of formula per month, $550 – $3,600 total cost for the first year.

Jennifer Carlson

Average cost of baby formula per month

Baby formula costs $40 to $300 per month or $550 to $3,600 total for the first year, depending on the formula type, can size, and brand. Most powdered formula brands cost $0.60 to $2.00 per ounce , although organic or hypoallergenic formula typically costs more. One ounce of powder makes 7 to 9 fluid ounces.

During the first week, a newborn may only need 8 to 16 fluid ounces of milk per day. During the second or third week, that number increases to 14 to 26 fluid ounces as the baby's stomach grows.

Every baby is different, so as long as they seem relaxed after feeding and have multiple wet diapers every day, they should be getting enough.

Most babies don’t need more than 32 fluid ounces per day . If your baby is vomiting (not just spitting up) or in pain after every feeding, they may be getting too much formula.

A mother feeding her baby formula in a bottle.

Baby formula cost in the first year

Baby formula costs $550 to $3,600 total for the first year, depending on the brand, type, can size, and how much your baby eats. Bulk sizes cost less per ounce than small cans but cost more up front. Special dietary needs or organic formulas will increase costs.

After the first month, your baby will start drinking more at once and feed less often. Once you start introducing solid foods around 6 months, your baby will need a little less formula.

Low-income parents may qualify for the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help cover the cost of formula.

Baby formula cost by brand & type

Powdered baby formula costs $0.60 to $2.00 per ounce , depending on the brand, type, and can size. Generic brands all meet the same FDA standards as name brands, which usually cost more because added features and marketing drive up their prices.

Formula cost by brand - chart

*Requires a Costco membership.

If you make formula ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator and use or discard it within 24 hours . Once your baby drinks from a bottle, use or discard the liquid within 2 hours .

Organic baby formula costs $1.00 to $1.80 per ounce , depending on the brand, retailer, and can size. Organic formula is made from cows raised on organic farms, so there's less risk of exposure to pesticides. Some parents claim organic formula is gentler on their baby's digestive system.

Hypoallergenic

Hypoallergenic baby formula costs $1.50 to $4.25 per ounce , depending on the brand and size, and is made with pre-digested milk proteins. Pediatricians recommend hypoallergenic formula for babies who have a hard time digesting milk proteins.

If your baby has any of the following symptoms, talk to your pediatrician or consider switching formulas:

Colic or extreme irritability

Discomfort after feeding

Persistent diarrhea

Soy baby formulas cost $0.80 to $1.85 per ounce on average. Doctors used to recommend soy formula for babies who are allergic to cow's milk, but these babies are usually also allergic to soy proteins.

A mother preparing baby formula in a bottle.

Baby formula cost factors

These factors may affect your total costs:

Can size – Baby formula comes in cans and tubs of varying sizes, from 12.4 to 34 ounces . Larger can sizes cost less per ounce, so buying formula in bulk can save you money in the long run.

Ready-made formula – Premade formula costs about $0.20 to $0.55 per fluid ounce and is more expensive than powdered formula but much more convenient. Ready-made formula usually comes in 2-, 8-, and 32-ounce bottles.

Formula concentrate – Concentrated formula costs $0.40 to $0.50 per fluid ounce and is similar to ready-made formula, except you have to mix it with equal parts water. Once opened, concentrate containers and ready-made bottles must be stored in the fridge and used within 48 hours.

Combo feeding – Supplementing with breastfeeding, or combo feeding, is an easy way to save money on formula. Some people breastfeed during the day and use formula at night. Others breastfeed as much as possible and supplement with formula. Some parents use formula while they're working and breastfeed at home.

Rewards programs – If you find a formula that works for you, check to see if the brand has a rewards program. Some companies like Enfamil and Similac offer discounts for members.

Never try to save money by diluting formula with extra water. Your baby will not be able to get the nutrients they need.

Bottles and accessories

The following extra costs apply when bottle-feeding your baby:

Bottles cost $2 to $8 each , depending on the brand, size, and retail store. Some brands make bottles specifically to reduce colic or for certain age groups.

Bottle warmers cost $20 to $85 and make formula-feeding more convenient.

Bottle brushes cost $4 to $10 each and clean milk in hard-to-reach areas.

Baby formula FAQs

What is baby formula made of.

Most baby formula is made from powdered milk protein from cows, vegetable oils, lactose, and a blend of vitamins and minerals. Some formulas also contain human milk oligosaccharides, DHA, probiotics, lactoferrin, or soy protein.

Formula sold in the U.S. is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is considered safe. However, breastfeeding is ideal if the mother and baby are able to, especially during the first 6 months. Breastmilk is more easily digestible and strengthens babies' immune systems.

Check your formula periodically to make sure you don't use anything that has been recalled for safety reasons.

What kind of water do I use for baby formula?

Use distilled, purified, bottled, or clean tap water to make baby formula. If you're concerned about the purity of your local tap water, boil it and let it cool to room temperature before using it to make a bottle.

When do babies stop drinking formula?

Babies typically transition from formula to whole cow's milk at about 12 months , when most babies are able to digest cow's milk and receive other nutrients from solid foods.

When was baby formula invented?

Baby formula was invented in 1865 by a German chemist named Justus von Liebig. Back then, it was made with just powdered cow's milk, flour, and potassium bicarbonate.

Can babies drink cold formula?

Babies can drink cold or room temperature formula, although they may not like it at first. Babies typically prefer warm or lukewarm milk because it's closest to the temperature of breast milk.

Microwave ovens create uneven hot spots in milk that could burn your baby's mouth, so never use a microwave to heat up a bottle. Formula should only feel lukewarm on the inside of your wrist.

“We think the app is a really good idea. We hadn’t really discussed the operation with Freddie yet as we weren’t quite sure what to say or how best to go about it, so the app really helps with that..”

What is Little Journey?

The Little Journey app has been designed by healthcare professionals, children and their parents for the sole purpose of improving how we provide medical information to families about hospital. It was created with the aim of reducing any anxiety you or your child may have, by familiarising you with what may happen and the team looking after you. Information is delivered to children and their parents based on the findings of research studies performed in the UK and abroad.

The Little Journey app can be tailored to individual hospitals, meaning that you and your child can explore the exact rooms they’ll visit on the day of their procedure, from the comfort of your own home. With storylines, animations and information designed for different age groups, we aim to engage and inform your child about hospital in a fun and interactive way.

We also provide bite size pieces of information to you, the parents and carers, that are delivered both before and after hospital. We hope this helps support you throughout your whole hospital experience and helps you talk with your child about what is happening. We’ve also included checklists, a notification-based system and questionnaires to help us understand you and your child’s needs, to help improve your hospital experience.

When should my child use the Little Journey App?

The Little Journey app has been designed for use at home by children aged 3 to 12 years of age in the weeks leading up to their hospital visit and by their parents before, during and after the procedure. Based on the findings of medical research, we suggest the Little Journey app is used at different times depending on your child’s age:

• Children 3-6 years old should use the Little Journey app in the few days directly before coming to hospital. They can use the app before this but the majority of time spent using it should be the day before their procedure.

• Children 6+ should use the Little Journey app for the first time seven-to-ten days before their hospital visit. They can use the Little Journey app prior to this, but we suggest not using the app for the first time in the last few days before hospital, as children in this age group benefit from having time to process the information.

With your permission, we will notify you when to use the Little Journey app based around the date of birth you entered for your child when signing up to the app.

How can I get involved with Little Journey?

If you would like to get involved, we are always looking for people to help design and develop new elements to the Little Journey application. We currently have the following community groups providing feedback and support:

  • Healthcare Professionals within the NHS
  • Healthcare Professionals outside of the NHS
  • Young children aged 3-7
  • Young children aged 8-12
  • Parents of children going for surgery

To get involved, please use the contact form on this website, or email [email protected]

Do we have to self-isolate before hospital?

Previously, any child or adult coming for an operation would have to self-isolate for up to 14 days before their operation.

Self-isolating means that the child and accompanying adult would need to stay at home and avoid any face to face interactions, including going to school or work and seeing friends. However, new guidance suggests that families don’t need to routinely isolate before their operation, unless told otherwise by the hospital beforehand. In addition, you also don’t have to isolate after your operation, just continue with social distancing and washing your hands regularly with soap and water.

What is Coronavirus?

Viruses are a type of germ that can cause infections. There are many different types of viruses including the common cold, bronchiolitis and tonsillitis. Each virus spreads from one person to another in different ways and leads to symptoms specific to that virus.

Coronavirus is a type of virus. The main way it spreads is from cough and sneeze droplets which are then either breathed in or land on surfaces which someone else touches. The most common symptoms of coronavirus are: – A new continuous cough this means coughing a lot, for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours – A high temperature – A loss of, or change to, your sense of taste or smell.

Some people also experience muscles aches, tiredness and shortness of breath.

To stay safe from Coronavirus, we can do three key things: 1. Wear a face covering in public places like public transport, hospitals and shops 2. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water 3. Maintain social distancing: Try to stay two metres apart from people outside your household at any time.

Coronavirus has changed the process of having an operation greatly: from what staff wear to the areas they travel through on the day and the need to have a COVID screening swab before the operation. Even if you’ve had elective surgery before yourself, or been with a child having surgery, please read the following information articles to help prepare you.

Is it safe to have surgery during a pandemic?

The past few months have been extremely challenging for everyone. There has been a huge amount of work and changes made to ensure the NHS is able to continue safely caring for patients of all ages. A big change in recent months has been in the reduction in planned surgery being performed while infection levels in the community remained high. This has meant that many children and adults have had to wait longer than planned for their operation. After the initial rise in cases, infections levels dropped meaning it was safe enough for children to start having planned day case surgery again. This remains the case at present, but infection levels are being carefully monitored.

To help keep everyone safe, several steps have been put in place to reduce the risk of catching coronavirus while in hospital. Hospital staff will all follow certain infection control measures, like wearing a face mask when they’re looking after you. Just like everywhere else, there are key things that you can do to help protect yourselves:

1. Washing your hands with soap and water regularly, but especially when you enter or leave each hospital area. 2. Maintain social distancing as best as possible. 3. Wear a face covering.
