Karbala and Najaf, Iraq – The Biggest Pilgrimage in the World
When most people think of Muslim pilgrimage sites, they picture Mecca and Medina. While these are undoubtedly important sites for Muslim pilgrims, they are actually not the most visited Muslim pilgrimage sites.
Around 9 million Muslims go to Mecca each year. However, the cities of Karbala and Najaf in Iraq receive more than 30 million pilgrims each year!
Which Muslims go to Karbala and Najaf?
While Karbala and Najaf are important to all Muslims, as these cities were the site of considerable Islamic development during the 7th century, the majority of Pilgrims to Karbala are of the Shia sect.
The History of Karbala and Najaf
The 10th of October 680 was arguably one of the most important dates for the history of the Muslim World. On this date, the Battle of Karbala took place. During this battle, the Umayyad Caliph Yazid waged a battle against a small revolutionary army led by Hussein Ibn Ali , the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.
Yazid’s army slaughtered Hussein and his family. While this was horrible, it led to much more disastrous ramifications for the entire Muslim community. At this point, Islam as a religion was a little more than 100 years old. Since the death of the Prophet, there had been considerable debates over who should lead the Muslim umma, or global community.
Originally, it was decided that the descent of Muslim leadership should be given to the devout followers and close friends of the Prophet, not necessarily his blood relatives. This was quite revolutionary at the time, as almost all empires were based on tribal or familial connections.
However, as the Umayyad Caliphate (the first Islamic caliphate) developed, power began to be passed down only to powerful members of the Quraysh tribe, the tribe of the Prophet. The third Caliph, Uthman Ibn Ali, was a member of this tribe, but he was also the Prophet’s cousin, son-in-law and devout follower. However, before his death, he began to give powerful positions in the increasingly powerful caliphate to members of his tribe. Most notably, he put his cousin, Mu’awiya, in control of a vast area of lands and wealth.
This allowed for Mu’awiya to take control of the Muslim caliphate after the death of the 4th Caliph, Ali. Mu’awiya then established the Umayyad Caliphate, and he named his son Yazid to be the next successor of the Muslim people.
For many early Muslims, they began to become frustrated with the Umayyads. They had seen the development of Islam as a radically different system of governance than the systems of descent based on power that controlled the rest of the world. When Mu’awiya named Yazid Caliph, it broke all precedent, and it appeared to many that the Islamic caliphate was simply turning into another descent-based system of power that it had originally radically opposed.
Yet, all of the original followers of the Prophet were deceased by this point. It was difficult to choose a ruler based only on faithfulness. However, if a system based on descent were to be established, it should at least be based on the direct descendents of the Prophet and on those who were originally loyal to him.
Mu’awiya, and the rest of the Qauriysh tribe, originally rejected Islam and persecuted its first followers. More so, Mu’awiya and Yazid were not directly descended from Mohammed. In the eyes of many early Muslims, the control of the Muslim caliphate should go to the descendents of Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet and one of his best friends and closest followers from the beginning.
Therefore, many of these supporters set up bases in Karbala and Kufa (part of modern-day), Iraq. Once Yazid’s army killed Hussein ibn Ali, the son of Ali, this led to a permanent schism in Islam that is today known as Shia (those who believe in Ali’s descendents) and Sunni. Sunnis theoretically believe in leadership based on shurra, or consultation, even if leadership of the Muslim world during the early period was indeed rife with leaders who named their descendents heirs.
Why are these cities important to Shia
Today, Karbala and Najaf remain important sites to Shias because they are seen as the place in which the Muslim community betrayed and murdered the rightful descendents of the Prophet.
To most Shias, the murder of Hussein ibn Ali and his family are seen as direct betrayal of God and his message of Islam. They do pilgrimages to these sites to mourn for Hussein and his family and to seek forgiveness from God on behalf of the Muslims who betrayed and murdered him.
What is the difference between Shia and Sunni?
In the nearly 1200 years since the split between Sunni and Shia sects, considerable differences in practice and beliefs have developed, yet these beliefs are not as distinct as schisms in Christianity.
Fundamentally, Shia and Sunni disagree on the rightful descent of leadership in the Muslim community. While initially, it was believed that the caliphs of the early Muslim world had both religious and political power, Sunnis soon began to see the caliphs as only political figures. Religious decisions were left to the umma, or community, to interpret through Islamic scholars.
On the other hand, Shias believe that the descendents of the Prophet through the line of Ali continue to have the responsibility of interpreting the faith. The power of the original Shia imams may be compared to the Roman Catholic Pope, as these leaders were believed to have direct influence from God in interpreting religious faith as both political and religious leaders. Over time, more disagreements occurred on the rightful descendent, and various sects of the Shia faith developed, as Shia muslims disagreed on which descendent of the Prophet had the divine right to make religious decisions.
In terms of practical application of the faith today, Sunnis and Shias have some differences. Sunni and Shia muslims often pray in slightly different styles. For instance, In Karbala and Najaf, you will see many Shia muslims pray with a small stone, symbolizing the dirt of the Earth upon which God built humanity. This is not a tradition that Sunni muslims adhere to. Likewise, in Karbala and Najaf, you will see many photos of Hussein. Sunni muslims continue to reject all images of Muslim leaders, and do not use any form of iconography.
Many Christians make comparisons to the divides between Protestant and Catholics when discussing the division between Sunni and Shia Muslims. While some argue that Shias are more like Catholics, in that they use more icons and believe in a religious leader that holds central control, the divides over righteousness and salvation are less pronounced than they are in Christianity.
The Quran directly forbids the condemnation or questioning of other Muslim’s faith, so the mainstream sects of Sunni and Shias see the other as true Muslims who are worthy of salvation. Sunni and Shias both share a belief in the 5 pillars of Islam, do pilgrimages to Mecca, and share the same fundamental beliefs in Islam. Their disagreements are based only on the leadership of Islam and daily practices, not on core beliefs.
Is there a specific time that pilgrims travel to Karbala?
The pilgrimage sites of Karbala and Najaf function similar to those of Mecca. In Mecca, a Muslim can complete a pilgrimage any time during the year, which is known as Umrah . During a specific 10 day period that commemorates the Pilgrimage of the Prophet, pilgrims complete a ritual known as Hajj.
In Karbala and Najaf, you will also find hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visiting year round. However, during a 10 day period that commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein Ibn Ali, pilgrims complete a specific pilgrimage to these cities known as Ashura. Some years, more than 20 millions pilgrims have been reported to travel to Karbala during Ashura alone.
Why are there more pilgrims to Karbala than Mecca?
Practically, it is often easier for Muslims to travel to Karbala than it is for them to travel to Mecca. Saudi Arabia strictly controls the number of pilgrims visiting its Holy Sites, which Iraq does not.
This means that many pilgrims can travel to Karbala multiple times in their life, while visas to visit Mecca are often given only once.
Culturally, there is often a greater societal value placed on this pilgrimage in Shia-majority states than there is for the Hajj pilgrimage in Sunni-majority countries. During the time of Ashura, Shia-majority regions typically have a long public holiday. In addition, it is very common to walk to Karbala during Ashura as a sign of devotion, even from very far distances. While albeit taking much longer, this option, combined with public holidays from work, makes pilgrimages to Karbala a more cost-effective and accessible option for millions of Shia Muslims.
Can you see Karbala and Najaf as a tourist?
Yes! Unlike Mecca, which bans non-Muslim tourists and is very difficult even for many Muslims to access, Karbala and Najaf are constantly open to non-Muslims.
What makes Karbala a unique tourist experience?
Quite frankly, visiting Karbala and Najaf is an experience unlike any other. Even if you are not religious, it is an opportunity to see millions expressing religious devotion, and it offers an incredible opportunity to see the way in which religion continues to have a massive impact on the world today!
All of our tours to Iraq include a visit to Karbala and Najaf, so join us for the chance to see these incredible sights for yourself!

Sample itinerary for our Iraq tours
Here’s the standard 8-day tour we offer on most of our expeditions.
Day 1 – Arrival in Baghdad
- The first day is a day to take things easy.
- We will be welcoming you throughout the day, picking you up at the airport, and checking in at the hotel.
- Once everybody is settled, in the evening we can all go for a drink or dinner but officially, the sightseeing tour starts on day 2.
- Overnight in Baghdad.
Day 2 – Full day in Baghdad
- The guided tour starts on the second day, a day which we will spend exploring the city of Baghdad.
- We will discover the old book market, the leather and copper bazaars, the historical Shabandar café, and all the old city highlights. We will also visit the Martyr’s Monument and, depending on the political situation, we might also try to get into the Green Zone, let’s see.
- If open, we will also visit the National Museum of Iraq.
- In the evening, we will all go to Dar Al Atraqchi Heritage Cafe, a traditional but pretty modern café and restaurant.
Day 3 – Ancient Babylon and Karbala
- Ancient Babylon was the first great civilization in the world, believed to be the first city to ever reach a population of more than 200,000.
- World wonders such as the Hanging Gardens and the Tower of Babel used to be within these walls.
- Today, Babylon is an archaeological site, featuring a mind-blowing replica of the Ishtar Gate and an actual Lion of Babylon.
- We will also visit the former Saddam Hussein Palace, today overlooking the ancient city of Babylon.
- After lunch, we will head to Karbala, the holiest city in the world for Shia Muslims, a surprisingly touristic city visited every year by, literally, millions and millions of pilgrims.
- We will check out the two jaw-dropping shrines, and spend the night wandering around the lively streets of Karbala.
- Overnight in Karbala.
Day 4 – Karbala & Nasiriya
- There’s so much going on in Karbala that, in the morning, we will take things slowly, wandering around town, checking the places which we probably missed the night before, and then, we will head for Nasiriya, a good 4 to 5-hour drive, with checkpoints included.
- Nasiriya is the largest city in southern Iraq, a high-security city, home to the American-built Al-Hoot prison, a maximum-security prison today filled with ISIS fighters. Nasiriya is also the gateway to The Mesopotamian Marshes.
- Overnight in Nasiriya.
Day 5 – The Mesopotamian Marshes
- This is going to be one of the most exciting days of our trip, since we will head for Chibayish, home to the Arab Marshes, a wetland ecosystem in south Iraq, an aquatic landscape in the middle of the desert, home to a distinct cultural group called the Marsh Arabs.
- We will spend the entire day getting immersed into their culture by visiting their villages, islands and eating masgouf with them, an old Mesopotamian dish consisting of a giant grilled fish.
- In the evening, we will head back to Nasiriyah.
Day 6 – The Ziggurat of Ur and Back to Baghdad
- In the morning, we will visit Ur, one of the oldest cities in the world (3800BC) – even older than Babylon – and believed to be the birthplace of Abraham.
- Then, we will take the long ride to Baghdad.
- In the evening, we can all go for dinner or drinks, and discover the modern part of Baghdad.
Day 7 – Samarra, Hatra and Mosul
- Samarra is a city controlled by a Shia Militia, a city practically impossible to visit for independent travelers but thanks to our expert local guides, hopefully, we won’t run into any issues.
- The city is famous for the spiral minaret of Malwiya, a UNESCO Heritage Site and one of the most famous landmarks in Iraq , absolutely stunning.
- Then, on our way to Mosul, we will stop in Hatra, a very well-preserved ancient Mesopotamian city, located in the middle of nowhere, and also a former ISIS training camp. We will have the chance to see actual ISIS graffiti.
- Overnight in Mosul .
Day 8 – Mosul
- Mosul is the second most important city in Iraq and one of the oldest cities in the world, the place where ancient Nineveh was found.
- In 2017, the city was liberated from ISIS, and people have already started to come back.
- Yes, we will explore the war-torn old city and all its destroyed buildings, but we will also discover Mosul’s most human side by witnessing the reconstruction, getting to know kind-hearted locals, and also checking out all the lively bazaars.
- Overnight in Mosul.

Karbala, Iraq: Ultimate Travel Guide
- Author david
- Date November 2nd, 2023
Welcome to Karbala, Iraq – a city steeped in rich history and spiritual significance. Located roughly two hours south of Baghdad, Karbala lies in the heart of Iraq. The city’s fabled Battle of Karbala took place in the year 680 between the Umayyad Caliphate and a small army led by Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. Ali died during the battle, and Shia Muslims now make an annual pilgrimage to his tomb to honor him.
Exploring the sacred shrines and mausoleums that commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn is a must when visiting Karbala. Beyond its religious significance, Karbala offers a wealth of cultural and historical landmarks waiting to be explored. Whether you choose to stroll through the bustling markets of the Old City or unwind by the serene waters of Lake Milh, exploring the city is a jaw-dropping experience.
I visited Karbala in September 2022 with the help of my friends Jafar and Ali at Bil Weekend . It was a moving spiritual experience I’m supremely grateful for, and one I’ll never forget. These are the top things you must do in Karbala, Iraq.
Eat Traditional Iraqi Food
During a visit to Karbala, Iraq, we discovered a local restaurant specializing in delicious home-cooked-style meals. One of their popular dishes is tashreeb , a flavorful stew served with bread. We also had the opportunity to try madfoon , a stew made with onions, eggplant, tomato paste, rice, and pumpkin. The restaurant offered many other enticing dishes, including chicken biryani , lamb ribs , fasolia (white beans), roasted chicken, and a veg and bean stew called sabzi .
Our meal began with rice topped with noodles and crispy almonds. The chef kindly offered us a taste of the mouthwatering madfoon, which left us craving for more. Next, they tore pieces of khubz tannour (an Iraqi flatbread) and placed it on the platter before spooning tashreeb and lamb ribs over it.
At our table, we enjoyed the tashreeb by soaking the bread in the rich tomato juice and savoring the tender lamb. The onions, potatoes, and chickpeas added a delightful touch. The lamb ribs were succulent and easily fell off the bone.
I also loved the sabzi dish and the incredible chicken biryani, which featured noodles, raisins, and aromatic spices. The tepsi baytinijan , an eggplant stew containing potatoes and vegetables, also blew me away. We ended on a sweet note with halawa halib – a thick milk-based dessert made with butter, flour, and sugar, topped with crushed pistachios. It was a phenomenal meal!
Explore the Pilgrimage Route in Karbala, Iraq
If you’re fortunate enough to visit Karbala, Iraq during the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage , I highly advise visiting the pilgrimage route. There, I came across a street vendor selling thousands of delicious dates, as well as others selling boiling hot Iraqi chai with cardamom and sugar.
We also found vendors along the pilgrimage route making khubz tannour, kebabs , and w’rashi (sweet dates in a nutty tahini sauce). I also saw a three-meter shawarma and tried some refreshing apricot juice, sugar bread, and a refreshing drink called skanjabeel . This non-alcoholic drink contains vinegar, honey, mint, and sugar and is surprisingly refreshing!
The highlight was a thick tomato kaymak stew with short-grain rice. There is a rivalry between Karbala and Najaf over whose kaymak is the best! I even got the chance to help pass it out to pilgrims passing through!
Visit the Shrine of Imam Husayn
The Imam Husayn Shrine , located in Karbala, Iraq, is a revered place of worship for millions of Shia Muslims around the world. It stands as a symbol of sacrifice and martyrdom, commemorating the tragic events of the Battle of Karbala while honoring Imam Husayn.
Its magnificent golden dome, intricate architecture, and vibrant decorations are downright stunning in person. My visit to the Imam Husayn Shrine was a beautiful and emotional experience. Inside, I saw pilgrims crying and clearly emotional. Others rushed to lay a hand on the tomb to honor the fallen leader. Photography inside is prohibited, but it’s something I’ll never forget.
Visit the City of Karbala, Iraq
The city of Karbala, Iraq is a traveler’s dream. Regardless of your religious affiliation, or even if you don’t have one, it’s impossible to visit the city and not feel its magic. It’s beautiful and emotional, and being among the people there was an unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re visiting for the food, the culture, the people, or a mix of all three, you’ll have a profound experience in Karbala. Book a trip to Iraq today to get an authentic look at what this part of the world is really like!

Visit Karbala
Karbala is an important city in Iraq, as it is one of the country’s holy cities, and more specifically for the world’s Shia Muslims. In this travel guide you will find information about accommodation, how to get there, how to visit the city and places to see in the surrounding area.

Why visit Karbala
Karbala is a city you should include on your itinerary in Federal Iraq , as it is one of the country’s must-see destinations. This ancient city of Babylonian origin is home to the shrine of one of the 12 Imams of Shia Islam, Hussain (grandson of the Prophet Muhammad), as well as that of his half-brother, both of whom died there, killed by the Umayyad dynasty during the Battle of Karbala.
To this day, Karbala is a holy city for Shiites from all over the world, who go there by the thousands on pilgrimage. To visit Karbala is to be immersed in an atmosphere filled with fervour. If you’re interested in Iraqi and Muslim culture, then consider making a stop here. What’s more, Karbala is 45 km from Babylon , a major tourist destination in Iraq.
Places to visit in Karbala
1. imam hussein mausoleum in karbala.
As mentioned above, visiting the shrine where Imam Hussain’s tomb is located is the main reason for visiting Karbala.
📍 Location
Information to visit
For your visit to the sanctuary, it is essential to dress modestly if you are a man. This means “neutral” clothes and classic trousers. Shorts are not permitted. Women must wear a chador, which is easily obtained on site for the duration of the visit. There is no entry fee for non-Muslim foreigners.
2. The Abbas mausoleum
Abu Abbas is the half-brother of Imam Hussain and his shrine is just a few steps away from the latter, located in the same compound.
2. Discover the Ashura celebration
Ashura is a Shia celebration commemorating the death of Imam Hussein. The faithful perform various ceremonies and processions during their mourning. Tatbir, a ritual practice practised by some members of the Shia community, involves flogging the body to share the Imam’s pain as a sign of absolute devotion. In Karbala, the faithful inflict a wound on the skull with a blade . In Iran and Afghanistan, it’s more likely to be the back, while in India, devotees slice open the skin on their backs with a long sword: this is the most extreme form I’ve seen, where Shiites literally walk in pools of blood. Tatbir only takes place on one day during Ashura, which lasts around 3 weeks.
For Sunnis, Ashoura marks the parting of the Red Sea by Moses and the salvation of the Israelites. It is celebrated with festivities and fasting. The dates of Ashura fall between July and August each year.
3. Al Tar Caves
30 km from Karbala
The caves of Al Tar are almost never mentioned in travel guides. However, this exceptional site is well worth a visit. Situated 30 kilometres from Karbala, Al Tar is an important archaeological site with many troglodyte tombs. To date, little is known about the enigmatic civilisation that built these caves and the tombs they contain, but a Japanese excavation and study in 1975 revealed many things, including the dating of artefacts and pieces of pottery from several periods:
- Medio-Assyrian (1000 BC)
- Neo-Babylonian (600 BC)
- Abbasid (800 AD)
The site has long been in danger of being demolished to make way for residential development. Don’t miss it if you get the chance. Find the results of the Japanese excavations in a PDF document in the link below. Finally, what could be described as a desecration excavation, but the studies are still fascinating:
🔎 Documents about the excavations in 1975
4. Ruins of the Al-Aqiser church
56 km from Karbala
Al-Aqiser is an archaeological site of great importance located in Ayn al-Tamr, in the Governorate of Karbala. The church is known to be one of the oldest in the East. It was frequented by Chaldeans (of the Catholic Church). The site is in a critical state of deterioration and unattended.
5. Al-Ukhaidir Fortress
Entry fee: 25 000 IQD 49 km from Karbala
The fortress of Al-Ukhaidir is an Abbasid palace and a notable historical site in Iraq located in the governorate of Karbala, 49 kilometres from its capital. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
5. The ruins of Babylon near Karbala
Entry fee: 25 000 IQD 50 km from Karbala
Babylon is one of Iraq’s most important historical sites. It is a must-see for every traveller to the country. The ruins are located on the outskirts of the city of Hillah, the capital of the province of Babylon, around 50 kilometres from Karbala.

How to get to Karbala
How to get to karbala from baghdad.
From Baghdad , go to the Alawi bus station . From here you can easily find a shared taxi to Karbala. The fare is 10,000 IQD per person. When I went there, several taxis for this destination were parked opposite the bus station compound, on the other side of the road.
How to get to Karbala from Najaf
From Najaf bus station, you can take a shared taxi which costs between 7,500 and 8,000 IQD for about an hour’s drive.
Where to stay in Karbala
There are lots of hotels all around the Imam Hussain shrine. I didn’t book anything in advance and looked directly on the spot. Many of them were fully booked and I had to do several, but it didn’t take me long to find one. However, you should definitely book accommodation in advance if you plan to visit the holy city during a special period such as Ramadan, Eid, Ashura or Arba’in.
Single rooms are generally available from 30,000 IQD, but you can find them for 20,000 if you look hard enough if you’re travelling on a tighter budget.
