John Shuttleworth announces 2020 tour and new book

Friday 31st May 2019, 11:20am

  • Graham Fellows is to tour as John Shuttleworth again
  • He'll perform John Shuttleworth's Back between January and April 2020
  • In April, the first John Shuttleworth book in over 20 years will be released too

The character of John Shuttleworth will be taking to the stage in 2020 for a UK tour.

Involving over 50 dates between January and April, it will be the first John Shuttleworth tour in three years.

In recognition of the character's absence from the stage, the show will be titled John Shuttleworth's Back . His promoters add: "But guess what? The show is also about... his back! It's been giving him trouble, you see.

"Years of strenuous DIY, not to mention playing his organ whilst perched upon a multi pack of Diet Sprite with no lumber support, has taken a heavy toll on the former Comet employee and security guard at a Rotherham sweet factory.

"But - ever the trouper - John will brave the stage to regale audiences with an evening of his classic compositions (plus brand new songs and hilarious 'back' stories), pausing no doubt only to reapply his deep heat rub!"

A full list of tour dates is below. Tickets are on sale now from most of the venues, with others due to go on sale shortly.

Shuttleworth has been played by Graham Fellows since the 1980s. His character has appeared on stage, TV and radio, most recently in Radio 4's The Shuttleworths . A new half-hour special of the sitcom will follow this Christmas.

It has also been revealed that Fellows has been signed by music publisher Omnibus to write the first John Shuttleworth book in over 20 years. TWO MARGARINES and other Domestic Dilemmas will be released in April 2020 , although it will be available for fans to buy exclusively at shows during the tour from January onwards.

John Shuttleworth - Two Margarines And Other Domestic Dilemmas!: John Shuttleworth's Guide To Everyday Life

How DO you avoid the 'nightmare scenario' of having two open tubs of margarine in your fridge? Throw one tub away, or give it to a friend or neighbour? If the remedy were that simple no one would have bothered to write a book about it, would they? John Shuttleworth would... and he has!

'Sheffield's funniest man' (The Times) and 'The 42nd best reason to love Britain' (The Telegraph) has made simple remedies to everyday domestic dilemmas, well... complicated! And ridiculous. And totally hilarious! Indeed, it's fair to say this book is crammed with ridiculous and hilariously over-complicated advice... that only an utter fool would follow!

News: Big Tour for John Shuttleworth

John Shuttleworth's back. In every sense. This is the title of his current tour and it also refers to his latterday lumber problems that have been giving him a right bit of pain. It also, handily, refers to the fact that after looking for a while like he was settling into cosy old age and coasting a little this tour marks a Trebor Mint-strong return to form. Oof!

There are no dramatic late-career curveballs. This is Shuttleworth rolling out some new songs and classic hits – "the beat goes on" – from Eggs And Gammon, The Man Who Lived On The M62, Pigeons in Flight to Two Margarines on the Go . In fact the latter number is a nice bit of cross promotion. He also has a new book out offering household tips, entitled Two Margarines And Other Household Dilemmas, discussing burning issues of the day such as the size of Curly Wurlys and why shower gel resembles Swarfega.

But back to the stage show, where there is a nice bit of narrative about John coveting Joan Chitty's Citroen Berlingo. You won't hear a better rhyme for "Berlingo" than in his song about the French car. It's every bit as good as his classic: "I’ll undertake your burial. Or my wife Mary will..."

Joan is a bit poorly – calm down, it's not Coronavirus – and may have to stop driving. Could her Berlingo be coming up for sale? Could John really be prepared to give up his Austin Ambassador Y Reg? Could he really be this opportunistic?

The songs, both old and new, are delivered with a veritable flourish and neatly broken up by onstage phone conversations with John's wife Mary and his erstwhile manager Ken Worthington. Yes, John has joined the smartphone age and has a state of the art "Hawaii" which he puts next to the microphone so that we can all hear his negotiations over upcoming hospice gigs.

Shuttleworth is an interesting, intriguing phenomenon. His creator Graham Fellows totally inhabits the role, which is not at all suprising as he has been doing Shuttleworth for three decades now and is genuinely about the same age as the Sheffield songsmith, maybe even slightly older. Fellows has grown into Shuttleworth's face. Or has Shuttleworth grown into Fellows face?

This raises an oddity though. Given that Shuttleworth has always been around the age of 61 that would mean that currently he would have been a teenager during the punk rock years. Shouldn't he be doing nostalgic cover versions of The Clash and The Buzzcocks and not bossa nova beats on his organ? Maybe we can look forward to a new album in the future, John Shuttleworth Sings The Stranglers.

Anyway, by the end of the night the hits just keep on coming, the glitterball is going hell for leather and both audience and star are punching the air in ecstasy. Doctor Theatre, plus a promising new booking arranged by Ken, appears to have worked its magic and the sciatica is gone. Oof indeed.

Bruce Springsteen to start European leg in Cardiff

Bruce Springsteen will return to Europe for the latest leg of his marathon 118-date, 21-country tour on Sunday.

"The Boss" - famed for hits like Dancing in the Dark, Born in the USA and Born to Run - will resume the fourth of his five-leg tour in Cardiff.

The American rock legend's 21st tour was first postponed by the Covid pandemic then delayed by illness when Springsteen feared he may never be able to sing again.

"When I had the stomach problem, one of the big problems was that I couldn’t sing," he told SiriusXM .

"You sing with your diaphragm. My diaphragm was hurting so badly that when I went to make the effort to sing, it was killing me.

"So I literally couldn’t sing at all. And that lasted for two or three months, along with just a myriad of other painful problems.

"During the course of it – before people told me, ‘oh no, it’s going to go away and you’re going to be OK’ – you know, you’re thinking, ‘hey, am I gonna sing again?’"

After postponing dates in the United States, Springsteen returned to the stage in March and has played 11 shows before this evening's European leg opener at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

The 74-year-old will play 26 stadium shows in Europe - including gigs in Belfast, Sunderland, two at London's Wembley Stadium and three in Ireland - before returning to North America.

"We have incredible fans in the UK," Springsteen told Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2 .

"Our biggest audiences are here, we're much bigger here than we are in America and it's so deeply appreciated after all of these years we've been coming here and playing. It's a different audience."

He will not just be playing his huge back catalogue, which spans six decades.

Springsteen is also promoting his 21st studio album Only the Strong Survive.

"I'm excited about this record because I know our UK fans are huge soul fanatics and that music over here has had a second life that it doesn't always have in the States," he added.

Tickets for his UK dates sold out in under eight hours.

Springsteen is renowned for his marathon three-hour sets and promised the same on this tour, which started in February 2023 and will end in November.

"Most bands stick to a very limited amount of material that they play on a tour," he told the BBC.

"But I'm proud my guys can turn on a dime and play something they haven't played in years and haven't heard in a long time.

"In the beginning of the tour our set list sort of stays a certain way until we loosen up and then we switch things up all of the time.

"It's good for fans, particularly those that come to loads of shows. I have very dedicated fans who come to more than one show and I like to play a different show."

Adam Davis will see The Boss three times this summer - after seeing him for the first time in London's Hyde Park last year.

"I've never heard music like it, it was a different level," said the 37-year-old, who will make the journey from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, to Cardiff.

“I think he has the most incredible band with such a variety of instruments. And it’s his personality, you feel like you know him when you hear him perform."

Kerry Dobson will also be there for what she thinks is her 14th Springsteen gig.

“I’ve been a fan of his since I was 19, I fell in love with his music and bought a back catalogue of all his records," said the 59-year-old from the Brecon Beacons.

“I grew up in the south Wales valleys in a small mining town, times were hard and money was tight. There’s something about Bruce’s music that just hits a chord with those parts of society that have struggled.

“Some of the words just hit you in the heart and you think about them for a long time afterwards. I think to be able to write stuff like that is amazing."

Springsteen has sold 140 million records worldwide and has a fortune of more than £515m.

He was Forbes' highest earning musician for the third time in 2021 after selling his entire musical catalogue .

Springsteen has won numerous accolades for his music, including 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award before being given the highest US civilian honour by former President Barack Obama .

Earlier this year, he became the first American to be awarded one of the highest honours in songwriting , joining artists like Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Kate Bush in the Fellowship of the Ivors Academy.

Springsteen now resumes his tour back in Europe in Cardiff - returning to the UK after playing four shows in Edinburgh, Birmingham and London last year.

Fans attending Sunday evening's show at the Principality Stadium have been warned to plan ahead and travel early as the motorway around Cardiff is expected to be "very busy" with many city centre roads shut.

Train companies are to provide extra capacity on routes in and out of Cardiff but passengers have been told the reduced number of services are expected to be "very busy".

Great Western Railway will run additional services after the concert to Swansea, Newport, Bristol and Swindon, but passengers are warned there will be no trains to north Wales or Birmingham after the concert.

Elton John marks '52 years of pure joy' with final tour performance: See photos

john shuttleworth tour

Elton John closed a musical era Saturday with his final planned tour performance in Stockholm nearly 52 years to the day the 76-year-old first performed there, he told the crowd , calling that period "52 years of pure joy."

The British superstar said the night was "magical."

"I'm trying to process it, and I don't think it will sink in for a while yet that I've finally finished touring," John said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Monday. "I can't tell you how much I'm going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me — it will stay with me forever."

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began nearly five years ago in 2018 . His last show Saturday in Sweden happened around two years later than the singer intended it to, thanks to a hip injury that forced him to rearrange his schedule.

"When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn't have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour — and the whole world — would have experienced in the next five years," John said. "And every step of the way, my fans have been there. They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show."

The "Tiny Dancer" singer bid America farewell in November, with his final U.S. performance at Dodger Stadium — the famed setting for John's 1975 breakout stadium concerts.

Take a look at John's final tour performance Saturday in photos.

See the best photos of Elton John at his final tour performance

John took the stage in a dazzling outfit — one of many the singer has donned over the years that have gone hand in hand with his electrifying performances.

Fans who packed the stadium were able to see John not only on the stage but in a larger-than-live iteration on a massive screen.

In heart-shaped, pink-tinted sunnies, John looked out toward the crowd as he sat at his piano on stage.

The crowd took video with some moments from his performance and later shared them to social media, including his final song and speech of the final show , for which he sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

The stage was adorned with a gold border with "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" embossed across the stage-framing feature. As he sang, some throwback photos and videos splayed across the big screen during his "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" recital.
