If you are taking a domestic flight, you must be able to produce a quarantine certificate for your pet issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ)

If you are taking an international or regional flight, in addition to producing a quarantine certificate for your pet issued by the AQSIQ, you must also ensure that you satisfy the requirements relating to the transportation of pets for the countries you are entering/exiting or transiting.

4 Quarantine requirements for pets entering China

In accordance with Announcement No. 5 [2019] of the General Administration of Customs of China, “Announcement on Further Regulating the Quarantine Supervision of Pets Brought into China,” Air China would like to remind you of the new quarantine requirements for pets entering the country through airports:

(1) Only dogs or cats (including service dogs for disabled persons) may be brought into the country and only one pet is permitted per person.

(2) For all pets brought into the country, China Customs must be provided with valid quarantine certificates and valid rabies vaccination certificates issued by the official animal quarantine agency of the country or region from which the pet is being exported.

(3) Pets must have electronic chips that conform to ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 international standards. The 15-digit microchip code may only consist of numbers and must be capable of being read by a reader. If the chip does not meet these standards, you should provide your own reader that is capable of reading the implanted chip.

(4) Pets entering the country shall undergo quarantine for 30 days at a quarantine facility designated by China Customs, except for pets exempt from quarantine in the following circumstances:

a. Pets brought into the country from one of the following 19 designated countries or territories: New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii (United States), Guam (United States), Jamaica, Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong (China) or Macau (China) that have valid electronic chips and pass on-site quarantine.

b. Pets from non-designated countries or territories (i.e. all countries and territories other than designated countries or territories) that have electronic chips, pass on-site quarantine and for which a rabies antibody test report issued by an approved laboratory can be provided (antibody titer or immune antibody level must be above 0.5 IU/ml).

c. Guide dogs, hearing dogs or search and rescue dogs that have valid electronic chips, pass on-site quarantine and for which the person bringing the pet is able to provide relevant user certificates and professional training certificates.

(5)Pet container requirements Pets that need to be quarantined must enter the country through ports equipped with quarantine facilities. The General Administration of Customs of China publishes a regularly updated list of ports with quarantine facilities on its official website. As of the date when these new regulations come into force, the list of ports with quarantine facilities is as follows:

(6) Air China shall not be held liable if a pet is repatriated or destroyed within a certain period of time by Customs due to the pet having entered the country other than in accordance with the above regulations.

(7) For all other specific quarantine requirements, please visit the official website of the General Administration of Customs of China (http://www.customs.gov.cn) and consult Announcement No. 5 [2019], “Announcement on Further Regulating the Quarantine Supervision of Pets Brought into China.”

5 Pet Carrier Requirements

You must prepare a travel carrier for your pet which meets airline requirements (Figure 1) and secure it appropriately (Figure 2).

If you are using an air travel-approved pet carrier with a detachable roof, the locking latches must be intact, with no missing nuts, bolts or locks. Doors must be sealed via an additional, external locking method, but this external locking method must not cause any harm to the pet (Figure 2)

Figure 1–Front

Figure 1–Back

air china travel with pets

Air China cannot accept travel carriers that fail to meet air travel requirements. In particular, travel carriers must NOT have the following features:

① Fiberglass or hard plastic doors;

② Openings or ventilation holes are large enough for the animal's paws or nose to fit through;

③ Additional doors on the roof or ventilation holes on the bottom end of the side walls;

④ Openings and ventilation holes on either side of the container adjacent from the door have not been covered with wire mesh.

A. Dimensions

You must contact Air China in advance to confirm whether the dimensions of the carrier meet aircraft requirements in terms of the aircraft’s door dimensions and hold capacity.

The dimensions of the carrier must also enable the pet to stand, turn around or lie down in a natural position.

Air travel-approved pet carriers:

Diagram for reference only

B. Materials

Materials are limited to fiberglass, metal, rigid plastic, welded mesh and hardwood only. Containers comprised entirely of welded mesh or wire solder are not suitable for air transportation.

C. Ventilation holes

Ventilation holes are to be located within the upper third of the walls on three sides of the container (excluding the container door). ventilation holes must occupy at least 16% of the surface area of the four container walls. Additional holes may be placed on the top or on the sides of the container for increased ventilation as required. All openings should be covered with a wire mesh in order to prevent the animal from extending its paws or nose outside of the container.

A door should be located at one end of the container and make up one side of the container itself. The door must be equipped with a sliding chain or hinge as a locking device. Doors must be made from welded metal that is strong enough to withstand it being bent or damaged by the pet. Doors on rigid plastic containers should have protuberances of at least 1.6 cm in size at the top and bottom so that hinges and locking pins can be fitted.

On either side of the container door, spacer bars or handles should be fitted along the middle of the outer walls of both sides of the container to facilitate handling and shield the container from other baggage.

The floor of the carrier must be solid in order to prevent the seepage of feces and urine. Absorbent bedding should also be provided to prevent leakage (straw cannot be used as bedding).

The shipper must ensure that the roof of the container is solid. Ventilation holes may be placed across the entire surface of the roof providing that these holes do not reduce the integrity and stability of the roof itself.

G. Food and water containers

The pet container must have a fixed water container that allows for water to be added to it without opening the pet container itself. Feed containers must be fixed inside the pet container or attached to the pet container itself. Food may be attached to the pet container for use in the event of flight delays.

Small animals must be accompanied by valid health and vaccination certificates and must be in compliance with the related regulations of the countries of entry, transit and exit in order to be accepted for carriage.

Small animals cannot be taken into the cabin but must be carried as checked baggage in the cargo compartment of the aircraft.

Small animals are classified as special baggage and are subject to special baggage charges.

The total weight of one container for the small animal(s), feed and water shall not exceed 32KG. Otherwise, the container shall be carried as cargo.

Up to two containers for small animals are allowed on each flight.

Small animals can only be accepted for carriage on Air China-operated one-way nonstop flights, but not on connecting flights for the time being.

Air China shall not be liable for any delay of the animal because it is refused entry into or transit through any country, state or territory or for any injury, sickness, escape or death of the animal under normal conditions of carriage.

Live animals refer to domestic domesticated cats and dogs, but cats, dogs and their hybrids which are aggressive, vulnerable to injury and respiratory problems are not allowed to be transported, including, but not limited to, terriers, boxers, bulldogs, spaniels, pugs, mastiffs, American staffords, American howlers, Boston beagles, Brussels griffins, mastiffs. Small animals are not allowed to enter the cabin directly. They must be transported in the cargo compartment as checked baggage.

Small animals belong to the special baggage category and are charged according to the special baggage fee standards.

Each flight is limited to one container containing live animals, and each container is limited to one live animal.

The total weight of each container containing live animals (including the weight of small animals, food and water) shall not exceed 32KG, otherwise it must be transported as cargo.

Cats and dogs born not more than 8 weeks ago; cats and dogs in pregnancy or lactation; cats and dogs within 7 days of delivery are not accepted.

Live animal transportation is applicable to Air China-operated one-way direct flights, as well as domestic-to-domestic and domestic-to-international connecting flights through Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu with transit time of more than 2.5 hours. If the transit time is more than 4 hours, the live animals must be claimed at transit airport and put under personal custody before checked in again for further transportation.

Air China does not bear any responsibility for the failure of live animals to arrive on time due to the refusal of entry or transit by the countries concerned in the course of transportation, or for the injury, illness, escape and death of live animals under normal transportation conditions.

Request for the carriage of small animals shall be made at least 24 hours before flight departure at our designated ticketing offices. Since only some selected aircraft types are fit for the carriage of small animals, your animal can only be accepted for carriage after we have given our consent and made proper arrangements in that regard. You do not need to bring the small animal and its health and vaccination certificates with you when making your request for its carriage.

Small animals which are pregnant or have just given birth within 48 hours will not be accepted for carriage.

We have the right to refuse to carry the small animals that are not in compliance with our conditions of carriage. In that case, if you decide to give up the carriage of your small animal, you can still check in for your flight as a normal passenger; if you decide to change to another flight, the rules on voluntary change apply.

Before flight departure, we have the right to change the aircraft type. Where the carriage of small animals is rendered impossible by such aircraft type change, you can choose to give up the carriage of the small animals or change to another flight fit for the carriage of small animals.

You must check in your small animal at the airport no later than 120 minutes before flight departure. In that process, you need to provide all the documents required for the carriage of your small animal.

The fees for the carriage of small animals shall be paid at the time of airport check-in.

Please submit an application for live animal transportation to our designated ticketing offices before the flight takes off. Because there are certain requirements for the types of the live animals to be transported, we must agree with you and arrange them properly before they can be transported. There is no need to present small animals and quarantine certificates in the application process.

We can refuse to transport live animals that do not meet the transportation requirements. If you abandon the transportation of small animals, you can go through the formalities of check-in according to normal procedures; if you request to change to another flight, you should go through the formalities of voluntary change.

Before departure, we have the right to change the aircraft type. If your flight cannot carry live animals due to the aircraft type change, you can choose to abandon the transportation of live animals or change to another flight that can carry live animals.

Please take the animals to the airport for check-in and show the necessary documents in the process of transportation no later than 120 minutes before the departure time of the flight.

China Airlines Pet Policy

If you are planning to travel with your furry friend on China Airlines, it's important to familiarize yourself with their pet policy. Here is everything you need to know before booking your flight.

Making Reservations: To transport your dog or cat as checked baggage, it is necessary to contact China Airlines in advance. Once your travel plans are confirmed, call them at (800) 227-5118 to guarantee a spot for your pet on board.

Pets as Checked Baggage: China Airlines allows animals to travel as checked baggage as long as they meet the necessary requirements. The fee for pets traveling to regions other than the Americas and U.S. and Canadian Territories is three times the usual excess baggage rate, ranging from $6 to $220. On these flights, animals weighing over 30 lbs (14 kg) and over 6 months old must travel on their own in a carrier. Animals under 30 lbs (14 kg) can travel with two pets in the same carrier if they are similar in size. Animals between 10 weeks and 6 months old with a combined weight less than 30 lbs (14 kg) can travel in sets of three if they are from the same litter. For pets traveling to/from the Americas and U.S. and Canadian Territories, the fee is two times the excess baggage charge for each carrier if it is under 70 lbs (32 kg), and three times if the combined weight of the pet and carrier exceeds this weight. Only one pet is permitted in each carrier on these flights, except for animals between 10 weeks and 6 months old who weigh less than 20 lbs (9 kg) and can travel in pairs.

Allowed Weights & Dimensions: When traveling as checked baggage, pet carriers must not exceed the dimensions of 27" x 35" (70 cm x 90 cm). It is important that pets have enough space to lie down, turn around, and move comfortably within the carrier. The carrier should have ventilation on three sides to ensure proper airflow throughout the journey. Additionally, there should be provisions for water and food inside the carrier for your pet's well-being during the flight.

Restrictions & Limitations: China Airlines does not accept pets with a strong odor in the hold. Pregnant pets are not allowed to travel within 7 days of giving birth. Furthermore, there are specific dog and cat breeds that are not accepted for travel at any time. Air China flying with pets

What is air china’s policy on pet acceptance.

Air China will accept carriage of small pets (domesticated dogs and cats) exclusively as checked baggage , the only exception to the rule being Service Dogs.

What pets are allowed in the passenger cabin and what as checked baggage?

Service Dogs are the only pets accepted in the passenger cabin , all other animals being transported as checked baggage or cargo .

Air China reserves its right to establish the manner of carriage, as well as the number of animals carried per flight, these variables being subject to constant changes.

Animals that seem wild, dangerous, pregnant, or that have given birth within the last 2 days will most likely not be accepted on board of an Air China flight, so do inform yourself before deciding to travel accompanied by your pet.

What responsibilities do I have?

First of all, you must contact Air China’s offices to inform yourself about the pet carriage availability for the particular flight that you are planning to take. You need to complete a Pet Shipping Reservation Request and submit a pet shipping request at any Air China direct sales office at least 24 hours before scheduled flight departure .

Secondly, after the necessary arrangements have been made, you must provide a suitable cage (appropriate in size and meeting the ongoing standards), as well as a reasonable amount of food and water for your pet to have during the journey.

The pet’s documents are another important aspect to be taken into consideration. Make sure you have your pet’s valid health and vaccination certificates, quarantine certificates, the required entry permits, and other custom documents that may be required by other countries’ policies. If this documentation is not complete and in good order, your animal might be denied entrance into a certain territory.

This is solely the owner’s responsibility, therefore Air China cannot be held responsible if your pet will be rejected at a certain border due to document irregularities. If such a case should occur and Air China suffers any flight delays, additional fines or unexpected costs, the pet’s owner will suffer the consequences, being obliged to financially reimburse the airline.

The passenger travelling with their pet will take full responsibility if the animal causes damages or injuries to other passengers or to the flight crew, as well as if the pet itself gets injured, sick, escapes or dies during an Air China flight under normal transportation conditions.

Should you decide to bring your pet along, do not forget to register it when you book your ticket. Be advised that you must arrive at the airport two hours before the flight take off, in order to have enough time to complete the check-in formalities for your pet.

Checked Pets

Air China accepts for transportation domestic cats and dogs at least eight weeks old .  Aggressive pets and pets vulnerable to injury or respiratory problems are not accepted for transportation.

Transportation of pets is accepted on domestic and international Air China direct flights, as well as connecting flights through Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai with a transit time of more than 2.5 hours . If the transit time is more than 4 hours, the pet must be claimed and re-checked at the transit airport.

Size Restrictions

Only one pet container is allowed on a single flight,  and each container may hold only one pet .

The pet kennels must meet certain standard aspects in order for your pet to be accepted on board in the first place. First of all, the container should be built in such a manner that the animal could not escape, get injured, injure the handling staff, or damage the baggage, cargo or the aircraft itself. Another important aspect is the size of the kennel, which should leave enough space for the animal to stand up, more around and have enough ventilation. Furthermore, the container must have a waterproof bottom made out of solid material, and also sides to contain urine and feces, so the aircraft would not be affected in any way by the carriage of your pet

The total weight of the pet kennel (including the weight of the pet, food, and water) must not exceed 32 kg .

Animal carriage depends on the aircraft type , so the best thing to do is to contact Air China before deciding which flight to book.

Be advised that Air China may change at any time the type of aircraft for a specific flight before its scheduled departure. In such a case, there is a possibility that the newly changed aircraft cannot accommodate your pet, so you must decide whether or not to travel with your pet on another flight, or leave it at home.

Regardless of the type of animal which you bring with yourself on a flight (small, domesticated dogs and cats), your pet, together with its kennel and supplies, shall not be treated as free baggage allowance , so it will be considered special baggage . Therefore, the excess baggage fee must be paid at the check-in counter :

Service Dogs

A passenger older than 16 , suffering from vision, hearing or speech impairment, may be accompanied on board by their Service Dog, to assist him or her through the journey. With Air China’s prior approval, Service Dogs can travel in the passenger cabin free of charge, or they can be transported as checked baggage at the express request of the owner, but they will be carried free of charge together with their container and supplies.

The sales office at the initial departure location must be informed in due time of your intention to travel accompanied by your Service Dog – at least two days before flight take off. Upon arrival at the check-in counter, you must present your dog’s identity document , as well as the quarantine clearance documents, the same documents being needed both when buying the ticket and when boarding the plane.

You should know that the check-in procedures must be commenced at least two hours before departure , and your dog must wear a service vest and be kept on a leash when boarding the plane (for safety reasons).

Take notice that a single Service Dog is allowed per flight .

Everything You Need To Know About Flying With Pets to Asia

If you’re a pet owner thinking about traveling with a dog or cat on a plane to Asia, you’ve come to the right place!

Unlike traveling with a dog to Europe, where many countries share import policies for pets, flying with animals to Asia can be a little more complex, as each country has its own specific requirements and regulations.

We’re hoping we can make your trip to Asia as fuss-free as possible with our detailed travel guide, where we’ll fill you in on Asia’s most dog and cat-friendly destinations, let you in on the best airlines for traveling with dogs, and how to go about flying with big dogs in the cabin.

  • Can I Fly With My Pet To Asia?

In short, you can travel with your pet to Asia. Fortunately, most Asian nations allow pets to travel into the country. However, how straightforward this process will be depends largely on which country you’re flying to and where you’re flying from.

Should you be arriving from a country where rabies is prevalent, you might find that you have a few extra steps to complete in advance of your trip, or your pet may need to spend a period in quarantine on arrival.

  • Can I Bring Dogs To Asia For Vacation?

You’ll quickly find that many Asian countries love their pet dogs and cats, with countries like Thailand and the Philippines having high rates of pet ownership. Japan is filled with cafes where you can bring along your pup, while Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur , has plenty of hotels that welcome pets.

Although most Asian nations are very fond of their furry friends, they may not always be the most dog-friendly travel destinations. You might often struggle with getting around with your pup unless you’re traveling on foot, as many metros, buses, and taxis don’t allow animals. For this reason, it’s best to consider whether your holiday is suitable for your pooch.

On another note, you must research which areas are deemed high-risk for rabies, as your pup may encounter infected stray dogs in many Asian countries, including Thailand, Indonesia , and India .

  • How Hard Is It To Bring A Pet To Asia?

There are a number of factors that will determine how difficult it is to bring your pet to Asia. These include:

  • Where you’re traveling from
  • What Asian country you’re flying to
  • What kind of animal you’re traveling with
  • The airline you’re flying with
  • If you’re flying with a large dog or other pet

For example, bringing an exotic animal to Singapore from India will probably be more complicated than flying with small dogs from the U.K. to the Philippines. Also, check each airline thoroughly, as you might be planning on flying with your dog with JetBlue, only to find out they don’t fly to Asia!

  • Which Pets Are Allowed In Asia?

This brings us to one of the most important questions about pet travel: Which animals are permitted to enter Asian countries?

It’ll come as no surprise that those who own dogs and cats will generally have a much higher chance of traveling with their pet than those flying with other animals. At the same time, household birds, rabbits, ferrets, and amphibians are often allowed in many countries.

Be careful if you’re flying with a large dog considered an aggressive breed, such as pit bulls and mastiffs, or with cat breeds like Savannahs or Bengals, as there’s a good chance they won’t be granted entry into many Asian countries. Every country has its own policies and protocols, which we’ll look at in more detail a little later.

  • What Documents Will I Need To Bring My Pet To Asia?

Though each country’s requirements will vary, you’ll likely be asked to provide some of the following when visiting Asia with your pet.

  • An international pet health certificate from a licensed vet, usually dated no more than 10 days before your departure.
  • Proof of two rabies vaccinations.
  • An ISO-compatible microchip.
  • Negative rabies titer test results.
  • Additional vaccine records.
  • Photographs of your pet.
  • Import permit.

You might find that you need more or fewer documents depending on where you’re visiting from and the type of animal your pet is.

  • What Vaccines Will My Pet Need?

Though animals like amphibians and birds often don’t require any shots when entering Asia, this is not the case for cats, and especially not for dogs.

Most Asian nations will demand proof of up-to-date rabies vaccinations unless you’re visiting from specific rabies-free countries. Usually, animals will need to have received two doses of this vaccine to travel to Asia .

Some other vaccines that are commonly required include:

  • Canine distemper
  • Feline distemper
  • Feline panleukopenia virus
  • Feline viral rhinotracheitis

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Flying With Pets to Asia In The Cabin, As Checked Baggage Or As Cargo?

Ask any pet owner who’s flown with their pet how they prefer to travel with animals, and there’s a good chance they’ll stay in the cabin.

Flying with your cat or dog in the cabin is often the most stress-free experience for both you and your pet, but is regrettably not always an option with some airlines. As a result, many animals must travel as checked baggage or cargo. This is often the case for those traveling with large dogs on planes.

Let’s look at what each of these transportation methods entails and how they weigh up against one another.

If your pet can fly in the cabin, it means that your companion can join you on the flight, where they must stay in a crate that meets the airline’s dimensions requirements for the duration of the journey.

  • Your pet can fly with you, helping reduce anxiety for you and your animal.
  • If you’re flying with therapy dogs, your pet may help you keep calm, particularly if you’re uncomfortable with flying.
  • It’s often cheaper to fly with your pet in the cabin with some airlines.
  • Cabin travel is usually confined to small pets unless you’re flying with service dogs.
  • Even in the cabin, some pets will find flying very unnerving.
  • Some passengers may have allergies or a fear of animals.
  • Your pet may soil or be sick in their kennel.

Checked Baggage

Animals traveling as checked baggage fly in a temperature-controlled part of the hold on the same flight as you. You’ll usually drop them off after check-in at a selected point of the airport and collect them an hour or two after the flight.

  • Airline staff members are specially trained to ensure animals have the best care available.
  • If your pet can become overwhelmed by ever-changing environments, smells, and people, the hold may be a calmer place.
  • This gives larger pets the chance to travel with you.
  • Though the chances are very slim, your pet is more likely to be unwell or injured when flying in the hold.
  • Your pet may become incredibly anxious while separated from you in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Older pets are often not permitted to travel in the hold.

Airlines requiring animals to travel as cargo will find a separate flight for your pet, similarly timed to yours, where possible. You’ll meet your pet after they land at the airport, sometimes the day after you arrive.

  • You can track your pet throughout the whole journey.
  • Many pet relocation companies work with airlines to ensure the animals’ safety onboard.
  • More routes and destinations are available to you when flying this way.
  • You’ll likely be apart from your pet for longer than with the other options.
  • It can sometimes be the costliest way for animals to travel.
  • Flights can be challenging to organize as you try to find flights for you and your pet on similar dates.
  • Which Asian Airlines Allow Pets In The Cabin?

Some pet-friendly airlines in Asia that allow animals to travel in the cabin include Korean Air , Asiana Airlines , and Bamboo Airways .

When it comes to animals flying in the cabin, it’s important to compare different airline pet policies, as some only permit animals to fly in the hold, while others allow pets who fit specific criteria.

Though it tends to vary between airlines, pets in the cabin usually must be:

  • Odorless and well-behaved.
  • Less than 9kg in weight.
  • Kept in a rigid or soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat.
  • How Much Does It Cost To Fly A Pet To Asia?

By now, you’re probably wondering how much all of this will cost! The cost of flying with your pet to Asia can sometimes be quite reasonable if you select a pet-friendly airline, though the fees can quickly add up if your pet is flying as cargo on a long-distance flight. Let’s look at some of the fares in place from some popular airlines.

  • What Are Asian Airlines Pet Policies?

Now that we’ve gone through the prices you can expect, we’ll get into the policies in place from these airlines.

  • Only assistance dogs are allowed on board and are limited to flights operated by AirAsia India and AirAsia Japan.

Singapore Airlines

  • Service dogs can travel in the cabin, providing you avoid seats in the exit rows.
  • Most dogs and cats can travel as checked baggage and must not weigh more than 32 kg, including their carrier.
  • Animals above 32 kg in weight must travel on a cargo flight.
  • Kennels must be less than 24-44″ in height depending on the aircraft.
  • Passengers can bring one pet on board or two as checked baggage.
  • Birds, small dogs, and cats can travel on board if they weigh less than 7 kg when combined with their carrier.
  • Carriers in the cabin must be less than 12.5″x17.5″x7.5″.
  • Larger animals flying as checked baggage must have a combined weight of 45 kg or less and travel in carriers less than 33″ in height.

China Airlines

  • Only dogs and cats can travel as checked baggage.
  • Up to 8 carriers are permitted for flight.
  • Pets must be at least 10 weeks old.
  • Crates must be no more than 28″ in height and 35″ in width.

Bamboo Airways

  • Dogs and cats can travel in the cabin on direct flights so long as they weigh no more than 10 kg when combined with their kennel.
  • Only 2 pets can travel in the cabin at one time.
  • Dogs, cats, and birds weighing less than 32 kg in their kennel can travel as checked baggage.
  • Up to 9 pets can fly in the hold.
  • Will My Pet Need To Be Quarantined?

Your pet’s likelihood of being quarantined differs based on where you’re traveling from and where you’re flying to. It can usually be avoided once your pet is fully vaccinated against rabies and presents a negative titer test, but let’s look at some destinations where your beloved companion may need to be quarantined.

Unless you’re flying from Singapore , New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, or the United Kingdom, your dog must go into quarantine for a minimum of 7 days.

Dogs and cats will be placed in quarantine for 10-30 days, except for pets from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most European countries. Check the list here .

If your pet meets all the requirements, they’ll be released in 12 hours. Animals who don’t can spend up to 180 days in quarantine.

Dogs and cats not listed on Hong Kong’s official website must remain in quarantine for 120 days.

  • What Are Some Other Regulations I Should Be Aware Of?

What Animals Are Not Allowed To Travel To Asia?

Depending on your destination country and airline, this list may look a bit different, but the following animals and breeds are frequently prohibited from traveling to Asia.

  • Large exotic animals.
  • Dangerous dog breeds, usually referring to dogs like pit bulls, Staffordshire bull terriers, mastiffs, Japanese tosas, chow chows, and fila Brasileiros.
  • Certain cat breeds, including Savannahs and Bengals.
  • Snub-nosed dogs and cats may be banned from flying with certain airlines due to their heightened risk of breathing difficulties during a flight. This extends to dogs like boxers, pugs, and Shit Tzus and cats, such as Himalayan, Persian, and English shorthair breeds.
  • Older pets can’t travel unless a vet deems it safe to do so.

What Are The Size Limitations On Pets Traveling To Asia?

  • Most airlines allow dogs of up to 45 kg to travel as checked baggage, though some airlines permit dogs of up to 100 kg to fly as cargo!
  • The size requirements for pets traveling in the cabin usually lie with the airline, but they generally must be 9 kg or less and be small enough to fit in their carrier under the seat.

When Do I Need To Make A Reservation For My Pet?

Each airline enforces cut-off points for adding a pet to your booking. Below are the reservation deadlines for a range of airlines.

Singapore Airlines – 2 weeks Bamboo Airways – 24 hours Korean Air – 24 hours (domestic), 48 hours (international) China Airlines – 48 hours (from September 18th)

  • What Can I Expect When Traveling To Asia From The U.S.A.?
  • You’ll likely need to obtain an import permit for your pet from your destination’s authorities.
  • When you’ve received your pet’s health certificate, you must get it endorsed by the USDA before departure.
  • Your pet will need an ISO microchip that’s linked to their vaccination history. Alternative microchips are often used in the U.S.A., so you may need to get your pup fitted with a new chip if this applies to you.
  • Without the correct documentation, your pet will likely have to undergo quarantine in the likes of Singapore and Hong Kong. In Malaysia, your dog or cat will need to be kept in quarantine for 7 days, provided you have all the necessary paperwork.
  • What Can I Expect When Traveling To Asia From The U.K.?
  • Much like the U.S.A., you’ll need to source an import permit and health certificate from a certified vet.
  • Your pet won’t need a rabies vaccine to enter countries like Singapore, but it’s best to keep your dog or cat up-to-date regardless.
  • As long as you’ve ensured your pet meets the criteria, you won’t have to worry about quarantine.
  • Although pets can’t fly in the cabin on a flight to the U.K., it’s possible to travel out of the U.K. with your pet on board if your departing airline permits it.
  • What Can I Expect When Traveling To Asia From Europe?
  • Rabies vaccinations are sometimes not required from animals entering from Ireland, though most other European countries will need to present vaccine records and often a negative titer test.
  • Valid health certificates are required by all countries, and some will request you to get an import permit.
  • Most pets from Europe will be able to steer clear of quarantine as long as you have all the relevant documents.
  • What Are Country-Specific Rules I Need To Know When Traveling With My Pet To Asia?

To give you a clearer picture of what you need to know before your trip to Asia, we’ll delve into the specific requirements of several popular Asian travel destinations.

Singapore requires travelers to provide quite a bit of paperwork. You’ll need to present:

  • An import license
  • An indemnity form
  • A health certificate endorsed by your departing country’s government
  • Vaccination records
  • Details of your pet’s microchip

Some of Singapore’s other pet importation rules include:

  • Animals must have been in your departing country for the last 6 months or since birth.
  • Dogs and cats must be at least 12 weeks old.
  • In addition to rabies, dogs must be vaccinated against canine distemper, canine hepatitis, and canine parvoviral infection.
  • The same goes for cats, who also need to get protected against cat flu (feline calicivirus and feline viral rhinotracheitis) and cat enteritis (feline panleukopaenia or feline parvovirus)
  • Dog owners must get a dog license, as well as an import permit.

The documents you’ll need for China are as follows:

  • Import permit (if pets are traveling as cargo)
  • A health certificate dated no more than 10 days before entering China
  • A health certificate endorsed by your departing country’s government.
  • A Carrier’s Immigration Pet Information registration form (dogs and cats)
  • A negative rabies titer test (unless you’re visiting from selected countries)

Additional rules include:

  • Only one dog or cat per person is permitted.
  • If your pet doesn’t have an ISO microchip, they’ll likely face quarantine for 30 days.
  • Quarantine can only be completed in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, so ensure you fly into one of these airports if there’s a chance your pet will need quarantine.
  • Your pet must pass a health check after landing to leave the airport.
  • Dogs and cats must be registered with the local police within one month of arriving.

Anyone headed to Hong Kong with their pup must have the following documents:

  • Application forms for your pet permit (found on their official site )
  • Your pet permit
  • Vaccination records for rabies and other applicable vaccinations (see below)
  • Your pet’s ISO microchip details

Other important rules to keep in mind:

  • Your pet must have up-to-date vaccines (Dogs – canine distemper, canine hepatitis, and canine parvoviral infection) (Cats – cat flu (feline calicivirus, and feline viral rhinotracheitis) and cat enteritis (feline panleukopaenia or feline parvovirus).
  • You must contact the Import and Export Station officer 24 hours before arrival.
  • You’ll be discouraged from arranging your flights until the pet permit is granted.

Make sure you arrive with these documents:

  • Import permit
  • Validated health certificate
  • Details of your pet’s ISO microchip
  • Proof of required vaccines (see below)

Thailand also enforces the following rules (using pets from the U.S.A. as an example):

  • Dogs must be at least 16 weeks old to enter.
  • A negative leptospirosis test within 30 days of your departure (if unvaccinated)
  • Cats must be vaccinated against rabies and feline panleukopenia, while dogs must have received vaccines for rabies, leptospirosis, canine distemper, hepatitis, and canine parvovirus.

  • Dogs will require rabies, leptospirosis, canine distemper, hepatitis, adenovirus type 2, and canine parvovirus vaccines, while cats need shots for rabies, herpes, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and feline panleukopenia.
  • Pets must arrive in Manila or Cebu airports.

Ensure you’re prepared with each of these documents before your trip to Cambodia :

  • An import permit if your pet arrives as cargo
  • Valid health certificate
  • Proof of required vaccines
  • Photo of your pet

Cambodia also applies the following rules:

  • Rabies vaccinations must be dated between 30 days and 12 months, as multi-year shots are not accepted.
  • Animals without such rabies vaccinations will face quarantine.
  • Cats should be protected against calicivirus, herpes, and panleukopenia, and dogs should have received distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus vaccines.
  • What Are The Best Tips For Flying With Your Pet To Asia?
  • Try to stick to direct routes rather than connecting flights to make the journey as comfortable as possible for your pet unless you’re taking a flight longer than 12 hours. If you’re flying with your dog with American Airlines or flying with your cat with Delta, you can try to catch a direct flight. You can also travel with animals directly to select Asian countries if you’re flying with your dog with United.
  • Set aside plenty of time for planning well in advance of your trip, as you’ll need to stick to the regulations for both your airline and destination.
  • The best airline to fly to Asia with will depend on where you’re traveling from, but many large carriers like Singapore Airlines fly to and from Europe, the U.K., and the U.S.A. If you’re usually someone who likes flying with a dog on Southwest, you’ll need to find a different airline!
  • If it’s your first time flying with pets, add accessories and travel essentials like a suitably sized crate, leak-proof bedding, and food and drink containers that can be refilled from the outside to your packing list.
  • After you’ve arrived in Asia with your pet, your companion will likely undergo a short health inspection. Provided they don’t need quarantine, you can head to your pet-friendly accommodation. If you’re visiting the likes of China or Hong Kong, you’ll need to check in with the local authorities within one month of your arrival.

7 Things To Know Before Traveling To China With Pets

New job, semester abroad, adventure. Any of those scenarios can be the reason you’re planning a trip to China . A new country means adapting to a new culture and all of its regulations that may differ from your home country. Whether your visit to China is temporary or permanent, you might be considering bringing along your beloved pet.

International travel for pets has certain risks that any responsible pet owner must prepare for and anticipate. What steps must be taken to ready yourself and your pet for long-distance travels?

If your travels to China will be for less than a month, hiring a friend or a pet sitter may be a better option than bringing your pet with you. However, if you are determined to have your furry companion cross oceans to be with you, there are a few things you should know about traveling to China with pets.

1. China Only Allows One Pet Imported Per Adult

China has very strict laws and regulations regarding the import of pets from other countries. Each foreign adult traveler is allowed to bring only one pet with them. Additionally, many areas in China only allow one dog per household. The dog must be registered to obtain a license. Cities such as Beijing have limits on a dog’s size.

While there isn’t a limit to how many cats one can own per household, cats must be vaccinated. All pets are required to have a booklet of immunization records. Culturally, China’s view of dogs as pets is complicated and may be vastly different from your home country.

2. There is a 30-Day Quarantine

Prior to 2019, all cats and dogs entering through airports into China required a 7-30 day quarantine until they were released into their owners’ custody. However, recent changes to regulation policies exempt pets from a mandatory quarantine if originating from designated countries must be microchipped and up-to-date on rabies vaccinations.

Pets being transported from non-designated countries are still subject to a quarantine. The owners must pay for the quarantine and are not allowed to visit their pets during the quarantine.

3. Some Breeds Are Banned in Certain Areas of China

As a country, China does not have bans on any dog breeds. However, Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing have restrictions on breeds that are allowed to live within city limits. The restrictions are based on the size of the dog.

Weimaraners, St. Bernards and Great Danes are a few examples of the large dogs that fall under the restrictions. Furthermore, many places in China have one-pet-per-household laws.

4. Not All Airlines are Pet-Friendly

If you’re traveling to China, chances are high that your mode of transportation is an airplane. However, not every airline is pet-friendly, even if you’re flying domestically. When booking your flights , be sure to check the airline’s pet policy.

Many airlines also have restrictions on how many pets can fly per flight. If you know you’re flying with your pet, book as early as possible to secure one of the pet slots. In addition, flights with long layovers can be too much stress on pets.

5. Cargo Travel Can be Dangerous for Pets

Very few airlines allow large dog breeds to fly with their owners in the cabin. Instead, the dogs are placed in cages and transported in the cargo hold of the plane. Unfortunately, the cargo area is suitable for luggage, not animals.

Smaller pets are often allowed to travel in the cabin if they are secured in carriers that fit underneath the seats. Many airlines have strict measurement limits for the carrier. Find the best pet carrier for air travel to keep your pet safe and secure during travels.

6. Microchips, Vaccinations and Other Required Forms

Recent changes in the regulations for importing pets into China requires all pets to have a microchip. In addition, they must have a rabies vaccination that was given within 30 days to one year of the time of travel. Depending on the pet’s country of origin, a rabies titer test might also be required.

A health certification from your pet’s veterinarian is necessary for bringing your pet with you to China. You must also have permission from your country’s government to export your pet to another country.

7. There are Regulations for Bringing Your Pet Home

air china travel with pets

Credit: Photo by Dimitry Kooijmans on Unsplash

The entry requirements for traveling to China with pets are almost exactly the same upon heading home except for the quarantine. Your home country will likely have their own requirements for importing a pet.

Before you can take your pet home, you’ll need an official immunization and health certificate from a local animal hospital. Your pet will also need an exit permit from the Entry-Exit Inspection bureau. The owner has to present their passport, so be sure to leave AFTER your pet has secured passage.

Consider the Financial and Emotional Burden of Pet Travel

Traveling to another country with your pet is financial and emotional undertaking that needs to be seriously considered. If there’s no other option except to bring your pet along with you, such as job relocation, then you can expect to shell out a serious amount of money to travel with your pet companion.

Any pet owner will tell you that having their pet with them is priceless. However, your pet’s ability to handle stressful situations should also strongly factor into your decision. Not every pet has the tolerance for long-distance travel, no matter what the mode of transportation.

Prepare for flying with a pet in cabin on international flights.

1. select an appropriate, cabin-approved travel carrier..

As mentioned above, different airlines and aircrafts have different size restrictions for carriers. Be sure to check the restrictions for your specific airline, and aircraft.

For example, Delta recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” since this fits most aircraft types.

We would recommend using a soft sided carrier as they usually give your pet more space.

2. Get your pet used to it’s travel carrier.

When flying with a pet in cabin, they will need to stay in its travel carrier for the duration of the journey. So, it’s very important that you spend some time to get your dog used to its travel carrier.

When first introducing your pet to its carrier, take it slow. Lure your dog into their carrier with plenty of treats, and let him/her play and sleep in there as much as possible. You want to avoid forcing your pet into the carrier as this may stress him or her out and may cause a negative association to the carrier.

3. Train your pet to stay calm.

Your pet will need to be calm and well behaved when flying in cabin. If they show disruptive behaviour, they risk being sent into the cargo area of the plane.

4. Exhaust your pet before the flight.

Try to exhaust your pet a little by increasing the level of activity before your trip. A sleepy pet will be less prone to getting stressed out on the flight, and will likely be better behaved on the flight.

5. Limit access to food and water before the flight.

When flying with a pet in cabin, your pet won’t be able to go potty. So, it’s a good idea to limit your pet’s access to food before the flight. Additionally, some animals may experience motion sickness if they eat just before a flight. If you are flying in the morning, then feed them the night before. Air Canada suggest feeding your dog four to six hours prior to departure, as a full stomach may cause discomfort during travel.

Line the bottom of your pet’s travel carrier with a pee pad, just incase they do have an accident.

6. Familiarise yourself with the airport that you are departing from and arriving to.

Most airports will have a dedicated area for pets and service animals to rest. It is actually a legal requirement that all U.S. airports have pet-relief areas available for working animals and pets to rest. Take some photos of the airport maps, so you don’t have to wander around on the day trying to find a resting place.

7. Bring along your pet’s favourite comforts.

To maximise comfort and minimise stress, pop your pet’s favourite blanket or toy in the travel carrier with them. If your pet suffers from separation anxiety, you could even pop one of your t-shirts in the carrier.

Which dog and cat breeds are not allowed in cabin on international flights?

Unfortunately, some airlines have restrictions on the dog and cat breeds they permit on their flights.

This is because of their anatomical abnormalities, short-nosed breeds may be more vulnerable to changes in air quality and temperature in the cargo hold of a plane.

Only certain airlines have these breed restrictions, so while you may not be able to fly with one airline, you may be able to fly with another. However, it’s important that you are confident your pet is healthy enough to fly.

The following brachycephalic and snub-nosed dog breeds are often not allowed in the cabin on international flights:

  • Affenpinscher
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Boston Terriers
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Bulldogs (all breeds)
  • Dogue De Bordeaux
  • English Toy Spaniel
  • Japanese Chin
  • Mastiff (all breeds)
  • Presa Canario
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Tibetan Spaniel

The following brachycephalic and snub-nosed cat breeds are often not allowed in the cabin on international flights:

  • Burmese Cat
  • Exotic Shorthair Cat
  • Himalayan Cat
  • Persian Cat

Documents required for taking pets in cabin on international flights.

The documents required when flying with a pet in cabin will vary depending on which airline you are flying with, and where you are flying from and to.

You will need more paperwork when traveling internationally, in most cases you will usually require the following:

  • Microchip certificate
  • Rabies vaccination certificate
  • Animal health certificate
  • Additional vaccination certificates
  • Rabies titer test results
  • Parasite treatment certificate

a) Microchip.

Many airlines require microchip documents when flying with a dog or cat in cabin. Not only is it usually a requirement, it is in your best interest. If your pet was to go missing whilst abroad, then you are far more likely to be reunited with a microchip.

Your pet can get microchipped at your local vet or a charity, such as RSPCA .

b) Rabies vaccinations.

If you want your take dog or cat on flights, it is likely that he/she requires a valid rabies vaccination. Particularly when you are taking your pet on an international flight as this is a requirement for entering most countries.

Most countries require dogs and cats to have their rabies vaccination between 30 days and 12 months prior to importing.

c) Animal health certificate.

Most airlines will require an official animal health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian when flying with pets in cabin.

In most cases, your health certificate will also need to be endorsed by the country’s authority responsible for the import and export of animals. For example, if you are traveling from the US, you will need your documents endorsed by the USDA. If you are traveling from Canada, you will need to have your documents endorsed by CFIA.

They are normally valid for 10 days.

d) Additional vaccinations.

Depending on where you are flying to, your pet may also require additional vaccinations or treatments.

For example, Turkey requires that all dogs are vaccinated against parainfluenza, leptospirosis, parvovirus, bordetella, hepatitis and distemper before being allowed into the country.

e) Rabies titer test.

Some countries require pets to have a rabies titer test before entering. This is usually the case when you are traveling from a country that is considered high risk for rabies.

If your pet requires a titer test the process is as follows:

  • Your pet will have a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
  • Your vet will then send the blood sample to an approved blood testing laboratory.
  • Your pet’s blood test results must show a rabies antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml.
  • You must wait 3 months from the date the blood sample was taken before you travel.
  • The vet will give you a copy of the test results.

f) Parasite treatment.

To enter many countries, dogs are required to be treated against internal and/or external parasites before entering. This includes treatment for tapeworm, fleas, ticks, nematodes and cestodes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I have to pay extra to fly with my dog in cabin?

You will yes. The amount you pay however, will differ between airlines as they charge different amounts. The charge also depends on where you are flying to and from. International flights usually cost more.

Can I fly with my pet in cabin on international flights?

You may be able to, depending on which airline you are flying with, and where you are flying to and from. Some airlines allow dogs and cats in cabin on international flights, such as Aegean Air. Southwest, however, do not let pets in cabin on international flights.

Can I fly with my puppy or kitten in cabin?

This depends on how old your puppy is, and which airline you are flying with. Different airlines have different restrictions on the age of pets that can fly in cabin. Some require puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old, where others require them to be 16 weeks old.

Can I fly with a large dog in the cabin?

Unfortunately, unless your dog is an official service dog, only small dogs are permitted. Most airlines require that pets and travel carriers must have a combined weight of no more than 8kg. There are however some semi-private airlines that will allow large dogs in cabin.

Traveling with your pet is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories. Thankfully, several airlines have recognized the importance of allowing pets in the cabin on international flights and have established comprehensive pet policies to accommodate furry travellers. Whether you choose Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, or JetBlue Airways, you can rest assured that your dog will be treated with care and enjoy a safe and comfortable journey by your side.

International & Connection Pet Travel

* For aircraft that have only one class cabin, a maximum of 4 kennels per aircraft is allowed. **Live animals are prohibited on all flights operating outside of the U.S. except Canada. To make sure your pet is taken care of, prior arrangements are necessary with all the carriers involved. If a pet has to transfer from a Delta flight to a Delta Connection, the Delta flight must be confirmed at least 48 hours before the scheduled departure time of the Delta Connection flight. That way we have enough time to make transfer arrangements between the two carriers and ensure your pet is safely delivered. Find More Information on Shipping Your Pet  »

Pets to Hawaii

Though Hawaii is part of the United States, Hawaii takes extra care when bringing live animals into the state due to its unique ecosystems. Hawaii requires that all live animals shipped or brought into the state have health and rabies inoculation certificates dated no more than 10 days before travel begins. On Delta flights to Hawaii, pets will not be accepted as carry-on baggage.

Please note, Hawaiian quarantine facilities are located in Honolulu only; therefore, Delta cannot accept pets on nonstop flights to any other Hawaiian city. Delta does not participate in the Neighbor Island Dog and Cat Entry Program. Also as of October 1, 2016, Delta and Delta Cargo will no longer accept warm blooded animals on flights with an average flight time of greater than 12 hours.

Hawaii Quarantines

All cats and dogs are subject to a 120-day quarantine in Hawaii. If specific pre- and post-arrival requirements are met, your pet may qualify for a shorter (30-days or less) quarantine. Costs are charged to the pet owner and must be paid in full upon arrival. Payment methods include cashier's check, traveler's check, money order, personal check, or cash.

Seeing-eye dogs (and other service animals) are accepted with certain provisions, including making advanced arrangements and verifying availability and cost. For further information, visit the Hawaii Department of Agriculture or call 808-483-7151 .

International Pet Travel

If you’re traveling internationally with your pet, be prepared by knowing the strict regulations governing international pet travel. Remember to make arrangements in advance and note that Delta and Delta Cargo  have a temporary embargo on all pet shipments effective until further notice. The embargo applies to all live, household animals (small dogs, cats and household birds) transported in the cargo hold underneath the aircraft throughout the domestic and international network. Exceptions apply for customers traveling with service animals and those in the U.S. Military or U.S. State Department Foreign Service Offices .

Take these steps before traveling to be fully prepared:

  • Contact the embassy or consulate of the destination country to determine pet travel regulations
  • Obtain all necessary paperwork (such as health certificates and documentation ) regarding your pet's travel
  • Contact your local veterinarian to ensure your pet is in compliance with foreign health regulations
  • Check with the CDC about the importation of pets into the United States
  • Check with APHIS about international animal export regulations
  • Terminal handling charges, customs clearance fees, veterinarian service, and/or kennel storage fees are in addition to shipping rates and will be charged to the shipper or pet owner upon arrival at destination airport
  • All fees and charges must be paid in full prior to the release of your pet

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a temporary ban on dogs traveling from Egypt for the protection of public health.  The CDC will review this suspension periodically and Delta will provide updates as they become available.  To ensure the protection and safety of our customers and their animals, Delta will place a temporary embargo on pet travel to and from Egypt.

When traveling to or from the United Kingdom, Delta will not accept any live animals as checked or carry-on baggage.

For pets traveling in the cabin to the Republic of Ireland, customers must notify the Department of Agriculture in advance at [email protected] , opens in a new window . Find additional information at the Republic of Ireland Pet Travel Portal .

For pets traveling to or from other countries in the European Union, a Veterinary Certificate for domestic dogs, cats, and ferrets entering the European Community for Non-Commercial Movement (Regulation (EC) No. 998/2003) is required. There is also another restriction concerning your pet. Only a microchip implant, and no longer tattoos, will be accepted as a means of identification. If your travel originates in Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, Japan, Cayman Islands, or the USA, parts 1 through 4 must be completed for movement into the European Union and requires 30 days of preparation for your pet. If your travel originates in any other country, parts 1 through 5 must be completed. These regulations require a minimum of four months preparation for your pet.

Service Dogs Traveling to London (Heathrow & Gatwick) or Manchester

Delta will transport service dogs to London (Heathrow & Gatwick) and Manchester with the proper documentation and compliance to the UK regulations for transporting animals.  In order for a customer to transport their service dog, they must:

  • Contact the appropriate Animal Reception Center in the city they are traveling to for more information and instruction on what will be needed to enter the United Kingdom.  After booking, customers must contact the Animal Reception Center directly to plan for the arrival of their pet and to ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed in advance for the UK Customs clearance of your service dog.
  • Provide a pre-approval letter from the Animal Reception Center in the city you are traveling to, indicating that your service dog has the appropriate documentation, has met the appropriate health requirements and has the proper micro-chip implant.  Delta will ask for this documentation in order to process your request for transport of your service dog.  Failure to present this pre-approval letter will result in denial of the service dog until the letter is provided.
  • Pay all appropriate fees and charges related to UK acceptance of service dogs. A current list of charges can be provided by the Animal Reception Center for the city you are traveling to.  For more information, please contact one of the appropriate Animal Reception Centers listed below.

PETS TAKE TO THE ROADS AND AIR WITH THEIR OWNERS

Fast-developing niche travel market offers plenty of potential.

air china travel with pets

More pet owners are taking their animals on travels, with related services such as specialized tours, accommodations and medical care now available.

Owners said it is good for the pets to see more of the outside world, as this broadens their experience of life.

For example, owners are accompanying their animals on Ferris wheels, cable cars, in kayaks and on paddle boards. They also take them to view the sea, on camping trips, and to visit grassland areas.

By immersing themselves in the wild and interacting with other animals, pets, who live urban lives most of the time, get up close with nature. Some owners said that taking their pets on trips helps avoid the guilt of having to leave them at home when they go traveling.

Pet-friendly hotels, charter flights and package tours are among the many personalized services now available — proof that demand is strong and there is plenty of potential in this niche business sector. Chinese society also appears to have become more inclusive and tolerant in dealing with animals.

In May, Bonnie Yao, 28, from Shenzhen, Guangdong province, traveled across western China for 50 days with her border collie Nian Nian after being laid off and wanting to spend time exploring wilderness areas.

"I think taking pets on trips is a good idea, because they belong to nature. In particular, dogs that live in cities for a long time may experience stress or depression because their working abilities and skills are not fully used. Taking them out to play frequently can give them an opportunity to express themselves," Yao said.

She added that Nian Nian "herded" several lambs on grassland in Ganzi Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province.

"Nian Nian was very curious about the lambs. After ensuring that he wouldn't harm them, I let him play with them for a while. He ran around, constantly keeping an eye on them," she said.

Yao added that during the trip, she further appreciated the beauty of nature. "We saw the most beautiful sunset at the summit of a snow mountain. At that moment, I felt as though I had arrived at the end of the world," she said.

Cai Yi, 24, an event planner in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has taken her beagle Pu Pu on every trip she has made since owning her in 2021.

"At first, I thought she was obedient, but I subsequently found that she is too crazy. If she does not use up all her energy, she will destroy my home. So, to prevent the house becoming a mess when I'm out, I've taken her on trips," Cai said.

She added that the cost of boarding a pet in Nanjing is too high, at about 50-80 yuan ($6.80-$10.90) per day, and about 100 yuan a day during holidays.

Cai has taken Pu Pu to Anji and Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, the coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province, and to Shanghai. She mainly uses ride-hailing services, as she cannot drive.

She said some drivers who like dogs allow Pu Pu out of her pet carrier. "They also ask if I want to stop and let the dog answer a call of nature and get some fresh air. They are very friendly to dogs," she added.

Pu Pu generally adapts well to new environments, because beagles are relatively fearless and curious about most things, Cai said.

"The first time my dog went to the beach, she was scared of the waves and barked at the sea, but after a few waves crashed against her, she was fine. Later, she even wanted to run into the waves," Cai said.

"When we went to Qingdao, I dressed Pu Pu up nicely, and many tourists came over and took photos with her. These are beautiful memories."

Cai said Pu Pu usually behaves well, apart from a tendency to randomly answer the call of nature.

"When we went to Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai, she pooped at the security checkpoint, which was embarrassing. I have to take paper with me everywhere we go to avoid causing trouble for others," she said.

Cai added that apart from a pet carrier, she prepares little for Pu Pu. If the dog is hungry, Cai finds some boiled pork for her at a hotel.

Good companions

Men Zhou, 24, a pets' e-commerce worker in Foshan, Guangdong province, said her golden retriever Mao Mao has made traveling much more fun.

"Mao Mao sheds hair in the car, but while we listen to music, he listens to us talking. Life on the highway can be slow and relaxing at times. We rented an electric scooter, sitting him up front. When we stopped at traffic lights, he liked to lick the people waiting at them alongside us. It was quite adorable," Zhou said.

She and her husband once left the dog at home for a day or so. Whenever they checked on him through a surveillance camera, Mao Mao seemed lethargic and uninterested in eating or sleeping.

"He just waited for us to come back, which made us feel sorry for him, so we decided to start taking him with us whenever we went out," Zhou said, adding that they have traveled for a total distance of 5,000 kilometers with the dog in the car.

The couple bought probiotics and hemostatic powder to prevent Mao Mao experiencing stomach discomfort, loss of appetite due to environmental changes, or injuries from bumps in the road. They also packed essential daily items such as dog food, snacks, toys, collapsible bowls, water bowls, towels and shower gel in the car. And, of course, poop bags.

Zhou said they avoided peak travel periods and popular tourist attractions, opting instead for open areas. When booking hotels, they carefully chose those that explicitly allow pets. They also called in advance, as some hotels may charge additional cleaning fees for pets.

"It's not good for dogs to travel in extremely hot weather or rain, and Mao Mao doesn't like wearing a rainproof jacket. But despite these inconveniences, I know he enjoys traveling," Zhou added.

Tracy Bai, 29, who works in the games industry in Chengdu, Sichuan province, owns a 14-year-old border collie Yumi, a Siberian husky Winky, a snowshoe cat Kuang Kuang, and a 1-year-old Ragdoll cat. She wants to take her pets to every place she visits.

Bai and her husband take the two dogs whenever they toured, but only take the cats to less populated and quiet places, as cats are particularly sensitive to their environment.

The couple have many heartwarming memories — for example, accompanying Yumi to watch fireworks, and seeing the cats and dogs playing together in the rain.

"Besides food, other supplies and toys, we take specific items depending on the requirements for the trip, such as life jackets for playing in the water, and goggles and snow boots for the snow. I also take insect repellent, combs and ionized water for grooming. In addition, for the cats, I bring litter boxes, carriers and beds. It's no surprise that everyone says it's more troublesome to take a cat on a trip," Bai said.

"Taking pets traveling requires thorough preparation, such as making an itinerary and packing emergency supplies for unexpected situations. It's also important to behave responsibly during a visit to encourage the growth of pet-friendly accommodations."

Package tours

As there are restrictions on traveling with pets on buses, subways, trains and airplanes, most owners travel with their animals by car. However, some choose specialized package tours.

Zhang Shaopeng, founder of Lechonglexing, a dogs' travel platform based in Beijing that was established in 2018, said the company's trips include visits to grasslands, beaches, mountains, wetlands and lakes. Private bookings are also available for dogs to visit aquariums and amusement parks.

Trips range from one or two days for nearby attractions, to three days or more for visits to destinations such as Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Gansu province, Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and Sanya, Hainan province.

For destinations relatively close to Beijing, the company arranges buses, with a 50-seater vehicle usually only carrying about 15 passengers to give dogs more room for exercise and avoid poor air quality.

For remote destinations, chartered flights for pets are available, with dogs placed in pet carriers inside the aircraft cabin with their owners.

Before they travel, the company inquires about the dogs' personalities and health status. For example, dogs in heat and those that are aggressive are not allowed to go on a tour, to ensure the safety of other dogs, and those with heart problems are not allowed to go to high-altitude areas. A doctor accompanies the dogs throughout a trip.

The company usually books an entire floor of rooms to avoid the dogs' barking disturbing guests.

"I once stayed in a guesthouse where the receptionist prepared welcoming gifts for dogs, which included toys and glow collars to reduce the chance of an animal getting lost at night," Zhang said.

During check-in, the hotel floor and type of room assigned to an owner is based on a dog's size, with large animals housed in bigger rooms and on lower floors. Dog bowls, mats, towels specifically for the animals, and disinfectant sprays are placed in the rooms, Zhang added.

The company organizes about 15 trips a month, compared with only two or three in 2018. Customers using its services are generally those born between 1985 and 1995.

"I have seen pet travel gradually being accepted by society. In 2015, when I entered the industry, pet travel was a complete blank, with few hotels willing to accommodate animals," Zhang said, adding that there are now also more reliable pet travel organizations.

Queenie Fu, 35, a catering manager in Beijing, and her corgis Kele and Qixi joined one of the company's tours to a grassland area in Inner Mongolia and also took a short trip to the Miyun Reservoir in suburban Beijing. She said the dogs made friends with other dogs, and pet owners also enjoyed social activities.

The most memorable moments for Fu included playing with the dogs on paddle boards and when Qixi tilted her tongue and twitched her legs to pretend she was exhausted after climbing a mountain.

New services

With improved living standards, more families are raising pets, who now number more than 100 million in China. As love for their animals deepens, a rising number of owners are looking to travel with them.

Wang Jinwei, an associate professor at Beijing International Studies University's School of Tourism Sciences, said more Chinese now regard pets as part of the family, so it's only natural to take them on travels.

As more companies sense the business opportunities in this market, related tourism products and services are fast becoming available, such as pet-friendly hotels and scenic spots, Wang added.

"Pets also bring happiness and comfort to humans, while travel relieves people from work stress. Combining the two meets people's psychological demands for a leisurely life," he said.

However, there are still only a limited number of facilities especially for pets, such as cabins, seats and hotels. There is also a lack of related laws and regulations about pets' health, sanitation, accidents and possible infectious diseases, Wang added.

In view of this, more innovative products for pets, such as special beds, travel insurance and medical care can be expected in the future to ensure that owners and their animals are properly cared for during trips, he said.

Kathy Jiang, principal at consultancy Roland Berger, said most people traveling with pets are from the medium- and high-end income groups, who have greater demands for their travel experience.

She suggested that hotels and attractions gradually increase their services, such as providing rooms for pets and making special tableware available. There should also be improved promotion to raise public awareness of such services, and increased investment in pet travel companies, Jiang said.

"Pet travel is developing into a new market with great potential. It is also driving development of emerging sectors such as pet hotels and tourism service providers," she added.

'Breaking up families': CDC announces strict rules for traveling to the US with your dog

air china travel with pets

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new restrictions Wednesday on dogs traveling to the U.S., which some say will make it harder for families returning to the country with their pets or adopting pets internationally.

The new regulation, which goes into effect August 1, bans all dogs under six months from entering the U.S. Dogs over six months must show proof they have not been in a country identified as high-risk for rabies. Without proof, the dog faces potential quarantine. Dogs must also be microchipped.

The tighter restrictions are meant "to protect the health and safety of people and animals by making sure any dog arriving in the United States is healthy and doesn’t present a risk to our communities," the CDC said in a press release Wednesday.

The U.S. eliminated rabies in 2007, and the new rules are meant to prevent the re-introduction of the viral disease, which is transmitted through biting. The agency has identified 131 countries as high risk for rabies as of Aug. 2023.

The CDC also said it has seen "recent challenges with international dog importations," such as fraudulent documents or dogs kept in unsafe conditions.

However, some say the restrictions will negatively impact families and those wanting to rescue pets overseas from legitimate organizations because it can be “especially challenging” to provide proof of a dog’s whereabouts," according to the Humane Society Legislative Fund in a press release on Wednesday. “Far fewer dogs will be able to find loving homes in the U.S.," the release said.

“The CDC’s job is to maintain public health, but these new requirements may needlessly delay Americans – including government personnel and military families – from returning to the United States with their pets, creating great anguish and breaking up families in the process,” said Tracie Letterman, vice president of federal affairs at Humane Society Legislative Fund, in a statement in the release.

Airlines may also struggle to implement the new restrictions.

“Airlines will be left to their own discretion to enforce these rules, and if they err, it’s up to the airline to export the dog back to the dog’s country of origin,” the Humane Society Legislative Fund said. “To avoid confusion or difficulties, some airlines may opt out of allowing customers to travel into the U.S. with dogs.”
