15 Best Things to Do in Drammen (Norway)

Tight against the banks of its namesake river, Drammen is in the Buskerud County, half an hour by car from Oslo. If you know Drammen but haven’t been here for a few years, now is the time to visit because the city has been rejuvenated especially on the riverside. There’s new housing in stylish glass blocks, as well as restaurants, cafes, shops, cultural amenities and a river promenade.

One of the emblems of the new city is the Ypsilon Bridge, impossible to ignore for its two tall pylons. And don’t forget the Spiralen, an unusual helix-shaped tunnel from the 1960s that deposits you to a vantage point over the city. Close by is a deep ravine, Norway’s longest heritage railway line and a historic mine that produced cobalt pigment for the Royal Copenhagen manufactory.

1. Kjøsterudjuvet

In the wild countryside north of Drammen is a 1,300-metre-long gorge, with sheer walls that reach 60 metres in height and a width of just four metres at the narrowest point.

In summer, when the river’s at its lowest you can walk through the gorge along the riverbed, making the climb to the Gamledammen lake.

You’ll just need a pair of sturdy walking shoes and waterproofs, and you’ll get to climb ladders up waterfalls and hop from rock to rock on a 90-minute hike in lush vegetation and with awesome scenery at every turn.

2. Spiralen

At Bragernesåsen directly north of Drammen is something out of the ordinary.

The Spiralen is a corkscrew tunnel that twists its way for 1,650 metres up to a scenic lookout above the city on the Skansen Ridge.

The Spiralen completes six whole turns, rising 22 metres with each one, and at the top you’ll be 200 metres above sea level.

Here you can park up, strike out on one of the walking trails or treat yourself to something at the cafe.

The “Spiraltoppen” also features an outdoor museum run by the Drammens Museum, with historic houses relocated here from across the Buskerud County.

The tunnel was constructed back in 1961 and King Olav V conducted the opening ceremony.

3. Bragernes Kirke

On an axis intersecting Drammen’s main square, Bragernes Torg, and the city bridge, the brick-built Bragernes Kirke was consecrated in 1871. The church is in the neo-Gothic style that was fashionable at the time, and its choir is oriented to the north rather than the east, as is the tradition.

The tower is 64 metres high and is set off by the Skansen ridge behind.

The must-see work inside is the altarpiece painted with an image of the Resurrection by the esteemed Romantic Nationalist artist Adolph Tidemand.

This painting is replicated at churches across Norway.

4. Bragernes Torg

Much of Drammen was obliterated in a great fire in 1866 and to prevent another catastrophe the new centre of the city left a lot of room between buildings, creating a real sense of scale.

That is how Drammen ended up with the largest city square in Norway, and one of the largest in Scandinavia.

The result is you can look right across the Drammen River and get unbroken views of both sides of the valley.

There are normally flower and vegetable stalls, and if you’re in luck you might catch the farmers’ market in spring and summer.

In winter Bragernes Torghas a big ice rink on the square while summer means street theatre and concerts.

5. Drammens Museum

The city museum is headquartered at Marienlyst Gård, a manor house from 1770, but also has locations at two other elegant properties, Austad Gård and Gulskogen Gård as well as the outdoor museum at Spiraltoppen.

On the south bank of the Drammen River, the Marienlyst Gård has decorative art collected from across the Buskerud County.

There are cabinets and chests with traditional Norwegian Rosemåling (flower patterns) from Numedal and Hallingdal, glassware, Baroque silver from the 18th century, as well as traditional costume, religious art, painting, handicrafts and agricultural tools.

6. Gulskogen Gård

In the early 19th century the Drammen River was lined with rows of stately manor houses like Gulskogen Gård.

Sadly, many were lost during industrialisation, but this one survived and was given its current Louis XVI style in 1804. The property was acquired at auction by Drammen’s richest merchant, Peter Nicolai Arbo in 1794 and remained in the Arbo family for several generations.

The manor house sits in an English landscape park, which has hardly changed for 200 years and is has a 265-metre lime alley, a maze and free-roaming peacocks.

The interiors are enriched with paintings by another famous Arbo, the Historical artist PN Arbo who was active in the mid to late 19th century.

7. Austad Gård

This estate has a history reaching back to the 14th century, and has had some distinguished owners, like the 17th-century general, Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve.

The old house burned down at the start of the 19th century and the current Neoclassical main building was raised between 1808 and 1813 on the preserved foundations.

Swedish prisoners of war were used as labour, and at that time Austad Gård was used as a summer home by the merchant and politician Peder von Cappelen.

The house is more or less the same as when it was built, except for a graceful Art Nouveau extension to the rear, from 1918. Go in for silk wallpapers, period furniture and paintings, and investigate the grounds, which have a stream, orchard and a splendid avenue.

8. Galleri Athene

On Grønland amid the glass buildings and refurbished factories on the south bank of the Drammen River is one of Norway’s biggest private art galleries.

Galleri Athene is on five floors and puts on exhibitions for painting, sculpture, graphic art and installations, and showcases both unknown and upcoming talent and already established names.

The gallery also stages live music, book launches and art seminars.

When we wrote this post in early 2018 the main exhibition was “Everlong” by the sculptor and installation artist Jørgen Frederik Scheel Haarstad.

9. Ypsilon Bridge

The biggest recent addition to Drammen’s cityscape is this cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle crossing, which opened in 2008 and was designed by the Arne Eggen architecture firm.

The Ypsilon bridge is so called because of its “Y” shape as it has two abutments on its north side at Bragernes and one on the south at Strømsø.

The most memorable feature though is the pair of angled 47-metre pylons towards the Bragernes bank, with 16 cables on either side.

The Ypsilon Bridge’s unveiling in 2008 was shown live on TV 2, Norway’s largest commercial television broadcaster.

10. Drammensbadet

In a building that resembles a rolling wave, Drammen has the biggest bathing facility in all of Norway.

The Drammensbadet has nine pools, five of which are inside and four outside.

Those outdoor pools are open June to August when you can drop your towel on the grass if it’s warm enough.

Inside there’s a 50-metre Olympic pool, where fitness swimmers can get their laps in, away from the mayhem of the wave pool, which has a climbing wall and a “power channel”. Along with the pools there’s a well-equipped fitness centre and a wellness area on the second floor, with jacuzzis, a sauna, steamroom and restaurant.

11. Drammens Teater

The city’s main cultural venue, the Drammens theatre is a special building by any measure.

It dates back to 1870 and has neo-Renaissance architecture inspired the theatres of Porte St.

Martin and Châtelet in Paris.

In 1993 the building was gutted by fire and everything except the external walls had to be rebuilt.

The man in charge of the project was architect Hans-Gabriel Finne, and the exuberant stuccowork, including a 45.3-metre stucco rosette on the ceiling, were composed by a workshop in Oslo.

And as for programme, there are pop, jazz and rock concerts, lectures, comedy shows, ballet performances and classical concerts.

12. Drammen River Cruise

The Drammen River is an indelible part of the city’s identity, so if you’re in town in summer it’s a great idea to head off on a river cruise on the city’s ship, the MS Drammen.

You’ll sail from the city centre ten kilometres up the river to the new bridge at Mjøndalen, and can catch some sun on the upper deck and buy drinks and snacks on board.

Since the whole city is squeezed into the valley, you’ll get a clear overview of the different quarters.

One, Øvre Storgate, was the city’s distillery district, where akvavit was produced and where the bulk of Drammen’s 19th-century Biedermeier architecture can be seen . Further along is the endearing Landfalløya district, settled by farmers in the 19th century.

13. Blaafarveværket

This cobalt mine belonged to a company set up by King Christian VIII, and was excavated from 1776 to 1898. Its story is closely linked to the Royal Porcelain Factory in Copenhagen, because cobalt ore was needed to make the blue pigment in porcelain decoration.

The Blaafarveværket (literally Blue Colour Works), produced the pigment and cobalt glass on site, but eventually went out of business when synthetic alternatives were invented.

There are eight kilometres of mines to navigate, as well as impressive quarries and mining exhibits that show the evolution in technology between the 18th and 19th centuries.

Above ground the complex is also a major art destination with three new temporary exhibitions each year by famous Norwegian and international artists.

And one more element not to be missed is the mighty Haugsfossen waterfall, which has a 39-metre drop.

14. Fossesholm Manor

If you’ve developed a passion for Buskerud County’s historic estates there’s another, 20 minutes away in Øvre Eiker.

The manor goes back to the 16th century, but in the 1760s the house was given a Rococo rebuild which remains today.

You’re invited to tour the interiors, which are still in their 18th-century Rococo splendour and embellished with colourful murals by the Swede Eric Gustaf Tunmarck.

There’s a separate Baroque bell tower in the yard, and you can pore over diverse exhibitions on art, the Resistance in the Second World War and dolls.

15. Krøderbanen

Make your way to Vikersund on the southern shore of the Tyrifjorden and you can ride on the longest heritage train line in Norway.

The Krøderbanen will take you from Vikersund up to Krøderen on a 26-kilometre line that opened in 1872. Services continued until 1985 when it was shut down, and it was only in 2011 than the Krøderbanen was resurrected as a visitor attraction that runs from May to October.

The stations still look a lot like they did at the end of the 19th century, and you’ll travel in vintage carriages pulled by steam a steam locomotive.

When get to Krøderen, the station is a beautiful piece of heritage with exhibitions about the line, a souvenir shop and a cafe still in the style of the 1920s.

Founded in 1834, the brewery’s primary products are soft drinks, beer and aquavit. It is possible to do brewery tours, or you can go into any bar or restaurant in Drammen and order a beer.

Drammen Theatre

The Drammen Theatre was built in 1869 and designed by Emil Victor Langlet. The theatre was the first modern theatre in Norway and is designed in the Renaissance style with symmetrical facades and round arched windows. After the theatre was destroyed by fire in 1993, the theatre was rebuilt as an exact replica.

Bragernes Torg

Bragernes Torg is the largest town square in Norway and one of the largest in the Nordics.

History of Drammen

Rock carvings found in the area are 6000 to 7000 years old and are the first signs of human activity in the area.

In the Viking Age the area was called Dramn or Drofn, a Norse worse that can mean ‘waves’. A the time, the water was 4-5 metes higher than today. In this era, the longships sailed up the fjord and in Snorre’s sagas it is written that Olav the Saint hid from Knut the Mighty in the Drammenfjord.

Saint Hallvard (the saint of Oslo) was killed and sunk in the Drammensfjord in 1043 with a millstone around his neck.

Drammen consisted of three small seaports: Bragernes, Strømsø, and Tangen, all situated around the Drammen River. The geographical location made the city favourable for seafaring, log driving and timber trade.

The timber trade in Drammen formed the basis for the rise of the city, which in the 18 th century developed into one of Eastern Norway’s most important maritime and trading cities. The location by the watercourse and the timber that could be obtained from the surrounding areas provided the basis for industry and other businesses.

There was extensive timber trade with the Netherlands and Denmark as early as the 13 th century. In the 16 th century, the Drammen River had extensive timber floating, and sawmills were built by the waterwalls.

Drammen was officially founded on the 19 th of June 1811, when the two separate ports of Bragernes and Strømsø were merged to make the town of Drammen. The bridge from Bragernes to Strømsø was completed in 1812 despite major protests from merchants at Bragernes, who feared trade leakage. There was a barrier on the bridge and people had to pay tolls.

Large parts of the city were ruined in the fire of 12-13 July 1866, which led to the reconstruction of the city centre, including the town square and church. The city planners wanted to build magnificent public buildings and entertainment to support business. The planners announced architectural competitios for the most important buildings. The Swedish architect Emil Victor Langlet, who had designed the Stortinget building, designed Børsena nd the Theatre.

The authorities tried to mandate brick houses, but Norwegians wanted to build in wood. In Drammen, wooden houses with only one floor were allowed. The city panners thought that rising land prices would eventually make it unprofitable to build anything other than multi-story brick houses. The plot owners found they could build wooden houses where the plot was furnished, so the houses actually had two floors. These drammenshus resemble contemporary houses with other Norwegian cities.

The Drammen Line opened in 1872, providing rail service between Drammen and Oslo.

Eventually Drammen became industrialised, with a brickworks established here. In 1847, the Drammens Jernstøberi was established and became one of the country’s most important iron producers of furnaces, machines, cranes and ships. Textile factories were established as well as the shoe factory, which produced more than 50,000 pairs of shoes a year. Norway’s first canning factory was started here.

In 1909, Drammen got its first trolleybus system in Scandinavia. The lines ran until 1967.

Drammen Today

Drammen has seen the introduction of new housing, shopping facilities, restaurants, cafes and bars.

About 29% of the population are first and second generation immigration, with many coming from Poland, Turkey, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Drammen is known in Norway as an industrial town. It had a rather bad reputation for having lots of heavy traffic and pollution, something the city is currently trying to change.

A large part of the town has been torn down to make way for apartments and modern buildings. Large parts of the city have been under construction for rehabilitation. The city used to have very heavy traffic, but now most of it is car-free.

Fly: The express train (Flytorget) connects Drammen with Oslo Airport. 

Drive: Drammen is a major transportation hub. Drammen is located on the E18 that runs between Oslo and Kristiansand, or the E134 that connects Drammen with Haugesund through Telemark. It also goes east towards Drøbak.

Train: Drammen is a station on the Bergensbanen and the Sørlandsbanen, and there are trains connecting the city to Oslo. 

Ferry: No ferry connection. 

Getting Around

The city centre is compact and easy to get around on good. The river separates the two halves of the city, though there are bridges connecting them.

The Netherlands is a treasure chest of exquisite art-filled cities and towns, canals, windmills and tulip fields, along with shiny-new sustainable urban environments, and glorious natural landscapes, coastlines and islands. While it’s one of Europe’s smaller nations (you can cross the entire country in a handful of hours), choosing where to spend your time takes planning.

These are the best places to begin your explorations.

1. Amsterdam

Best city for culture.

Ribboned by UNESCO-listed 17th-century canals that are lined by tilting gabled buildings that form its central core, the Dutch capital is a cultural jewel.

Amsterdam brims with museums headlined by the national showpiece the Rijksmuseum, neighboring Van Gogh Museum and modern-art Stedelijk Museum, with eye-openers like the Wereldmuseum museum of world cultures, and scores of smaller, specialist gems as niche as piano-player pianolas or sustainable fashion.

Music spanning classical to EDM spills from historic churches, hallowed concert halls (the Concertgebouw has near-perfect acoustics) and legendary venues like Melkweg, as well as open-air spaces such as the stage in the sprawling green Vondelpark.

Planning tip: It’s easy to avoid overtourism and escape the crowds by heading to less-visited neighborhoods. 2. Rotterdam

Best city for contemporary architecture.

The Netherlands’ second-biggest city and Europe’s largest port, Rotterdam has triumphed over the adversity of its WWII devastation, transforming into a veritable gallery of contemporary architecture and public art. Standout structures include the Overblaak "forest" of tilted cube-shaped houses (one houses the Kijk-Kubus museum), the soaring, horseshoe-shaped Markthal with original food stalls and restaurants, and the gleaming mirror-ball-like Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – a world-first open-access art storage facility. Repurposed spaces abound, such as the Schieblock, a mid-century office building converted into creative studios, topped by a harvestable roof terrace.

Planning tip: An exhilarating way to see the shapeshifting cityscape is aboard a water taxi zipping across the harbor. Daredevils can even abseil 100m (328 ft) from Rotterdam’s iconic 1960-opened Euromast observation tower.

Best spot for outdoors activities

Basking less than 2 miles off the Dutch coast, the bucolic Wadden Sea island of Texel (pronounced "Tes-sel") is capped by a crimson lighthouse and fringed by sweeping white-sand beaches. With its lush pastures grazed by fluffy sheep (prized for their wool) and dairy cows (producing milk used in local cheeses, chocolate and ice cream, mixed with freshly picked berries), along with rambling forests and nature reserves, Texel is an outdoors paradise. Cycling trails crisscross the island, with activities ranging from horse riding and skydiving. Watersports include sailing and kite-surfing.

Some 10,000 seals swim in the surrounding waters; you can spot them on boat trips or at Ecomare’s seal sanctuary.

Planning tip: Ferries carry foot passengers, cars and bikes from mainland Den Helder to Texel in just 20 minutes. In summer, there’s also a service linking Texel with the Frisian island of Vlieland . 

Best for time-honored streetscapes and artistic traditions

Lovely little Delft , with its web of narrow canals lined by quaint, colorful buildings, seems preserved in another era. Centered on its medieval Markt, one of Europe’s largest market squares (markets still set up here on Thursdays), it’s crowned by the lopsided 14th-century spire of its Oude Kerk (Old Church), and 17th-century-completed Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) – climbing its tower’s 376 spiraling steps provides beautiful views of the town.

A less demanding but equally picturesque impression is across the canal at Hooikade, where 17th-century Deft-born artist Vermeer, painted his famous View of Delft that’s still recognizable today. Vermeer’s life and techniques are covered at the Vermeer Centrum Delft.

The 17th century also saw artisans create an enduring legacy with the production of blue-and-white-painted pottery, known to the world as Delftware. Operating since 1653, Royal Delft has behind-the-scenes tours.

5. Den Haag (The Hague)

Best for regal museums and performing arts.

Stately Den Haag (The Hague) , the Netherlands’ third-largest city, isn’t the capital – that’s Amsterdam – but it is the seat of government and royalty. The glimmering Hofvijver pond relects the Gothic-style Binnenhof (Inner Court), the permanent home of the Dutch parliament (temporarily relocated until renovations that began in 2022 wrap up around 2028). The country’s monarch King Willem-Alexander works from adjacent Noordeinde Palace and lives at nearby palace Huis ten Bosch.

You won’t need a royal invitation to visit the dazzling royal picture gallery the Mauritshuis, hanging such masterpieces as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and Fabritius’ The Goldfinch . Former royal residence the Lange Voorhout Palace showcases the mind-bending works of Dutch graphic artist MC Escher. Bringing together organizations including the Royal Conservatoire and modern-dance Nederlands Dans Theater across four halls, 2021-opened performing arts complex Amare is the city’s cultural meeting point.

Planning tip: When the weather warms up, join locals unwinding at laid-back beach bars along the long, sandy strand at Scheveningen.

6. Maastricht

Best for roman relics and revelry  .

In this otherwise-flat country’s hilly southeast, Maastricht upends most visitors’ impressions of the Netherlands. Bordered by Germany and Belgium, its location on the ancient trading route between Cologne and Boulogne-sur-Mer saw the Romans establish a fort to guard the crossing on the Maas (Meuse) river. You can see the site of the original bridge from its replacement, the arched, stone footbridge Sint Servaasbrug, begun in 1280 and the Netherland’s oldest bridge.

Maastricht’s unbuttoned joie de vivre harks back to the 15th century when it was part of the vast Burgundy powerbase, resulting in rich food and flowing wine, beer and merriment. Great places to whet your appetite are the city squares Markt, Vrijthof (overlooked by Romanesque basilica Sint Servaasbasiliek) and Onze Lieve Vrowplein (by Romanesque church, Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek).

Planning tip: Carousing peaks during Carnaval, in the lead-up to Shrove Tuesday (February or March), when many businesses otherwise close and costumed parades and parties take over.

Best spot for history lessons

Whether your historical interest is academia, art or trans-Atlantic history, Leiden is a must-visit. Threaded by canals, it’s home to the Netherlands’ oldest and most illustrious university, gifted to Leiden by Willem the Silent in 1575; its botanical garden, the Hortus Botanicus Leiden, opened in 1590, shelters rare species from all over the world.

Befitting an academic city, Leiden is stuffed with fascinating museums; the flagship Museum De Lakenhal, in a former cloth warehouse, displays works by artists including Rembrandt, who was born in Leiden in 1606. The Pilgrims, religious refugees who had fled England for Amsterdam in 1608, moved to Leiden the following year, raising money to lease the Speedwell to commence their journey to the New World in 1620. The tiny Leiden American Pilgrim Museum charts their story.

Planning tip: Leiden is a jumping-off point for springtime trips through the rainbow-striped tulip fields and Keukenhof Gardens , 10 miles north at Lisse, when some seven million bulbs bloom.

Best place for unique perspectives

Utrecht ’s university was founded in 1636, and this vibrant student city buzzes with independent shops, bars and bakery-cafes.

The city has some singular vantage points. From the top of its Utrecht's medieval landmark, the 112m (367ft) belfry Domtoren, reached by 465 steps, you can see as far as Amsterdam on a clear day. The Domkerk cathedral’s nave was destroyed by a hurricane in 1674 and never rebuilt. Below ground DOMunder guided tours take you to an underground archaeological site covering two millennia of history. Paleis Lofen tours explore the subterranean remains of this residence built by the Holy Roman Emperors around 1020 AD, incorporating Roman remains.

Also unique to Utrecht are its canals. Sluicing through the historic center, the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht have double-decker towpaths, at both river level, where merchants offloaded goods into kelders (cellars), many of which house cafes and accommodation, and street level above. You can see another side to them from the water by boat, kayak or canoe.

Best for beaches, dunes and wildlife

The grand city of Haarlem – with its Grote Markt (Great Market) square, centuries-old churches (try to catch a Müller organ recital at the Grote Kerk) and impressive ensemble of museums (notably Frans Hals and Teylers) – is a splendid place to visit in itself.

When you’ve had your fill, the city is an ideal base for accessing powdery-soft, white-sand beaches at Zandvoort and Bloemendal aan Zee, via the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park , which teems with wildlife: along with birds and bats, you might spot bison, red foxes and fallow deer, as well as 2016-introduced horned Highland cattle. Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year. 

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.” 

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save.

What is the best place to travel in summer? 

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said. 

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the wellbeing that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of L.A. and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic made Allianz’s top five, instead Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

• Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.
• Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds. 
• Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. 
• Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.
• Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite sized chunk if possible. 

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes. 

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Rainy Monday morning in Louisville may be a sign of things to come. Here's the forecast

Louisville got lucky this year and made it through the first Saturday in May without rain impeding on the 150th Kentucky Derby , but stormy conditions are expected to hit the region this week, along with a cold front that could drop temperatures into the 60s this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Louisville will host a press briefing Monday afternoon to discuss the forecast.

Showers are possible throughout the day Monday, with an 80% chance of rain expected to bring a quarter of an inch of rain or less, but the forecast worsens a day later.

A preliminary report early Monday morning from the weather agency said strong to severe storms could roll into the region Tuesday and continue through Wednesday and into Thursday. The chance of thunderstorms increases Tuesday afternoon and is likely to remain in the forecast the following two days.

While the entire state is under a slight risk of severe weather Tuesday, most of the state — including Louisville, Lexington and the entire western portion of Kentucky, along with the southern half of Indiana — is under an enhanced risk Wednesday.

A cold front is expected to follow the storms. As of Monday, high temperatures for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are in the upper 60s, with a 20-30% chance of rain each day.
