Natural Warm Mineral Baths at the Caledon

World class spa in the western cape.

The Caledon Resort is home to one of the Western Cape’s famous Mineral Rich Warm Spring. The hot spring originates by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth’s crust.

It produces over a million litres of water daily with an average temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. No chemicals are added and the distinctive brown colour of the water is due to the high iron content, known as chalybeate.

When the water reach the surface rapid oxidation takes place which gives the distinct smell and colour of the water. The iron particles are a natural body exfoliation and the oily layers found on the surface of the pools, depending on weather conditions, a natural moisturiser to the skin.

The mineral pools are completely drained and filled every week on a Monday, except the historical Victorian Bath is drained and cleaned every Thursday.

Thermal Springs are well known to boost blood circulation, reduces stress, promote sleep and is a natural pain reliever.

caledon hot springs day visit

Hi what does a day visit cost and what does include? Should we bring our own gowns/towels? For visit in June 2021

It was R150 or R160 for day visitors when I was there about a month ago. You have to go early they don't accept bookings and only let a certain amount in. Best to get there about 8 or 8:30 if the weather is good. Also it is more crowded in school holidays people from the Dorp then also come.

caledon hot springs day visit

Last time I heard it was around R150 per person per day. They also have special deal that includes a meal but it would be best to give them a call.

caledon hot springs day visit

We have always been there for a overnight stay. I am not that aware of the daily timings. But it is closed on mondays for maintenance. Sorry. Try their website for further details

Wonderful natural hot mineral springs, beautiful grounds with lovely views. Lots of different pools, all very quiet if you go midweek. Wonderful value for money, with pensioners' discount for mid week stays. Makes a very convenient base for exploring the Overberg - wine and olive farms, whale watching at Hermanus etc.

  • Sleep Quality
  • Cleanliness

I stay here especially because of the springs. The rooms are spacious and luxurious with either pool views or views of the wheat fields of Caledon. The springs are also my fav springs in the w cape. You also get to swim there after dark if you are staying at the hotel. The hotel restaurant breakfast is fantastic but the lunch and dinner dinner is not recommended. Food there is average.

caledon hot springs day visit

I always enjoy my stay and absolutely love the different swimming pools. Stunning resort! Will definitely recommend it. I would prefer to know in advance if I am able to get the specified room I requested, as I am usually told that I will only know upon arrival. Overall, lovely place!

We have stayed at the hotel many times and this past stay was not as good as before. The mattress on my bed was so soft the springs were broken and I didn’t sleep well at all. The food quality isn’t as good as before. The check was not good because the receptionist was preoccupied- I had to stand and wait for her to finish on here computer first before she looked up to help me and then when I asked for a room down stairs with a patio after also requesting it when I made the booking, she didn’t listen and booked us into a room on the top floor with not even a balcony -

See my comments already noted. The service during serving breakfast can be more pro-active to assist guests finding vacant tables and staff serving coffee in the absence of working coffee machines. Also, reservations on tables should not be encouraged, stick to the principle first come, first served as all hotel guests should be treated equally.

Caledon Hot Springs

Mineral-rich water.

Caledon is known for the hot, mineral-rich water which burbles out of the ground in the hills above the village. It has attracted tourists in search of relaxation for years.

caledon hot springs day visit

The settlement itself began in 1710, when a Mr. Ferdinand Appel got the right to control the springs, as long as he built accommodation to house the visitors. A town was finally established by the British in 1813 and, as always, named after the current governor at the Cape, the Earl of Caledon.

At first, the Spa itself was little more than a warm, muddy pit surrounded by several unassuming hostelries. Then, in the Victorian Era, a rather splendid bath house was constructed, and the accommodation was upgraded to the standards of the day.

Today, the Caledon Spa has been incorporated into the Caledon Hotel and Spa, and it offers a comprehensive range of beauty therapies.

The healing waters of caledon.

caledon hot springs day visit

The hot springs in Caledon have enthralled inhabitants through the ages, from the early Khoi-Khoi people who first lived on the land, to the Europeans who later settled in the Cape.

The springs are said to have healing powers, and though some dismiss this as a myth, there is certainly a level of healing and therapy that takes place in this part of the land. The iron-rich waters vary in temperatures from 49.5°C at the top, and cascade to much cooler pools three levels down.

There are seven springs in total, all of which are known for their de-stressing properties. This is a place to forget what’s on your mind, and let the preoccupation of the moment wash over you into the pools below. Let’s face it, we all need to let go at some point, and what better place to do it in, being surrounded by the beauty and tranquillity of the Caledon landscape.

caledon hot springs day visit

Lush vegetation surrounds the hotel.

The Europeans settlers were so convinced of the power healing of the springs, they opened a sick house and then a sanatorium, which later burned down in a raging fire. So strong was the pull towards the hot springs, the area was originally named ‘Bad agter de Berg’ which translates to Bath Behind the Mountain.

Today, the hot springs are still known for their ability to induce pure relaxation for those who seek it – a healing of the mind. For families, it makes for the ideal escape from Cape Town. It takes just 90 minutes to arrive at Caledon Spa and Hotel in the Overberg area.

You are greeted by swaying palm trees, dense vegetation and rolling lawns. It’s an oasis outside the city to forget your stress and try your hand at poker at the same time – if you’re feeling lucky.

Spend a day soaking in the hot springs. Even on a warm spring day, it will keep the kids entertained and remind you that you don’t need your phone in your hand 24 hours a day.

caledon hot springs day visit

Cascading hot springs will take all your stress away.

To get the best experience out of the springs, start at the top and work your way down. You can feel the tension lifting with each dip, while the kids splash around nearby. If that’s not sufficient, a massage by experienced hands will most likely do the trick. The therapists understand how to smooth, unknot and unhinge any tension left in you. You can choose from an array of spa treatments to suit your needs and pocket.

When the sun starts to dip behind the rolling hills, make sure you have a glass of chilled wine in hand and a front row seat at the Black Sheep Restaurant. The resort has three restaurants to choose from, so whether you’re in the mood for a quick pasta at Da Vinci’s or a buffet at the Blue Crane, you are catered for.

caledon hot springs day visit

Enjoy dinner at Black Sheep Restaurant.

Laughter, they say, is the best medicine, and we’re here for complete healing. It was just my luck that Schalk Bezuidenhout was performing at the Caledon Swartberg venue. He is a brilliant stand-up comedian and had the audience in stitches from start to finish. The hotel hosts regular events to keep travellers and locals entertained.

Children are highly favoured at the hotel as well, and they can enjoy playrooms stocked with video games, and an entire arcade section to keep them busy outside of swimming hours.

When you eventually fall into bed, spent from the day’s de-stressing detox, in your relaxed mind you’re already booking your return visit. The rooms are well-serviced with all the comforts of home. It is only when you draw the curtains aside in the morning do you realise that this immaculate view is, sadly, not your home. You breathe in the beauty of the countryside – a breath so deep it reaches every fibre of your being. As I write this I’m recounting that breath of fresh air, and reliving the sense of serenity.

caledon hot springs day visit

The rooms have all the comforts of home.

You really only need one weekend to say ‘I feel relaxed’, as long as it’s the right weekend, in the right surroundings.  There are pockets of unexpected adventure around every corner of the Cape, as the early inhabitants discovered, and now you can discover them too. Legend has it, some towns can even heal your tired soul with their mythical waters. I tend to agree.
