Unusual Porsche error code - "System Fault - Visit Workshop"

This just came to me from my neighbour. He owns a Boxster and was in the process of polishing the headlights when, upon start up, this error code popped up. Apparently a certain amount of static charge build up may trigger this event. Anybody else experience this with their P cars?

Ignition lock faulty

997 system fault visit workshop

  • Add to quote

visit workshop now" is the intermittent text message I get on the display. I took it to the dealer and the ignition lock was replaced under warranty. Within a few days, I continue to get the intermittent message again when placing the key in the ignition. It will periodically stay on until I restart the vehicle. Does anyone know if this is serious or what the dealer did not correct?. The dealer has otherwise been good and attentive so I was wondering if the great experience of this site can help here.

997 system fault visit workshop

take it back

I have had this same error message intermittently on my '05 Boxster S for over a year and the dealer can't seem to solve it. Message comes on occasionally when I start the car and will stay on until I turn it off. Did you ever get this resolved? It seems to be a rare problem, anyone else seen this?

997 system fault visit workshop

I had the same issue with my 07 cayman, I would get the warning once in a while, and took it to porsche dealer and what they told me is that when you put the key in you have to wait for the lock/click sound before turning the key, otherwise it sets off the warning sign, been doing that ever since and not had the problem for the past 8 months...

I had taken the car in several times for this fault. The dealer has made an honest effort. The ignition lock was replaced first and a month later, the ignition switch. The problem still continues and the Boxster is out of warranty. The dealer is having trouble diagnosing this because it will not fault in their presence. I snapped a picture on the display when it happened and they were working from that. I will pay attention and pause for the audible mechanical unlock when inserting the key and see how this works. I think I was doing this anyway but will see and post on my results. Thanks for the return

I've had this problem for about 2 years, it started a few months before the warranty expired. It doesn't seem to effect the actual starting or running of the car and it it doesn't seem to be related to heat, cold, how recently I've driven the car etc, pretty random. I'd estimate it comes on about every 5th start or less. The warning will come on as the car starts and will stay on until it's shut off and usually doesn't return if I restart it. However last time the warning came up I restarted the car 5 times in a row and it kept coming up, on the 6th try I removed and reinserted the key and it didn't come up. I'll try pausing after I insert the key and see if that helps though it seems more like a work around than an actual fix. Ultimately I want to get this fixed, it's not something I want to try to explain to the next owner. It seems to be a rare problem, the dealer's never seen before it and Porsche North America doesn't have a solution either. When I Googled "Ignition lock Faulty visit workshop now" This posting was the only one I found. No faults showed up at the dealer even when the message is currently displayed on the dash. I've had it into the dealer about 6 or 7 times. I left it alone for about 6 months hoping it would get worse and easier to find but no luck. It might come on a bit more often now but not by much. So far over the last 3 trips to the shop they've replaced the ignition lock, checked some of the wiring harness, replaced the ELV module and the PAS module, still the same. Lately I've noticed that sometimes the key doesn't fully return from the start to run position so they're going to replace the ignition lock again in the next week. The other problem I'm having is getting Porsche North America to accept that this should be fully paid for as a warranty repair. It started when the car was under warranty and they couldn't fix it. They claim that since it's no longer under warranty they are going to cover 1/2 the cost as a "good will" gesture. I think I've been pretty patient, I understand it's hard to find and fix intermittent problems. I don't understand their logic. I love the car but this doesn't exactly make me love the company.

OK, it is a month later for the report on the ignition lock faulty warning. I thought I was getting success with the pause after inserting the key. It worked for a while and then a week ago I got three warnings in a row. So the mystery continues and I am out of warranty.

There is another failure mode I've been seeing, but my car won't recognize the key at all and I can't start it- http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-boxs...24-car-sporadically-doesnt-recognize-key.html No one seems to have any ideas. I'm out of warranty and don't really feel like letting the dealer shotgun parts in the car until they figure it out. I've called a couple of dealers and a couple of independent shops around here and no one has heard of this issue before.

I've posted on this before so this is an update. I've had the car into the shop (Barrier Porsche in Bellevue, WA) a few more times and I left it there for a couple weeks once as they requested. They've replaced the ignition switch for the second time and replaced a couple electronics modules. The only difference I've seen is that after the first ign switch replacement the problem got worse, after the second replacement it went back to where it was. The previous switch would occasionally stick between the start and run positions, and the warning message came up more often. Due to this I suspect that this a mechanical problem, not an electrical fault, but this is only a judgement based on my history. The dealer did mention replacing the steering column might fix it but Porsche NA is not willing to cover this, which brings me to my next problem. Porsche NA is unwilling to cover this under warranty even though it started when the car was covered and the dealer couldn't fix it, which is certainly not my fault. They are quite inflexible on this and tell me "their determination is final and there is no way to change their decision", even though they made this decision without even speaking with me. I have tried to pursue this with them but they tell me there is nothing I can do to change this decision, there is no one I can talk to etc, it's absolutely final. This seems rather arbitrary to me. I've talked to the dealer many times to see if they can help but they said they can't do anything about it, it's between me and Porsche NA. As far as they are concerned I have to pay them to continue to try and fix it. So far I've paid out about $700 with nothing to show for it. So I'm going to sue them. I've always been to resolve things with a couple reasonable conversations so the fact we've gotten to this point surprises me. They will not even give me a chance to tell my side of this and revisit their decision, it's quite frustrating. This is my first Porsche. I love the car but I don't know that I'd buy another. It's very disappointing. PS: If any of you have had this problem start while your can was under warranty please contact me.

I bought my car secondhand and it had this problem with just over 50k miles. Like 50,2xx miles. My solution was to take the car and trade it in on a Lexus IS-F. I loved the Cayman but it was just riddled with problems. I think the experience was enough to sour me from buying another Porsche. Every time I drove the thing, I wondered what was going to break. After reading about how Porsche NA treats its customers, it's only reaffirmed my 'fix' was the correct one. Sorry to hear that you are struggling with this and are being treated unfairly.

Hi Guys Driving back from the Southern Regional Concours event at Avington Park last weekend I had the following message come up: 'Cooling System Fault'. Hence I spoke to Porsche Guildford & they had it relayed in straight away to sort out. That was last Monday & it's now been with them for a week & they seem to have changes loads valves/seals as well as the vacuum pump itself twice & are still getting the error message & are now saying that the Diaphragm in the Airbox is not working which they think is causing all the problem. The car is less than a year old with only 3000 miles on the clock, so not exactly highly used. Any advise or knowledge on the above would be appreciated.

Hi there I'd be fuming that they have had it that long and still can't find the problem. Lucky it's still in warrenty hope they given you something super to drive round in. I wouldn't be to pleased they say that the diaphragm might be causing the problem I want to here a bit more of a positive answer seeing how much the car costs. The problem if the computers they plug don't tell them exactly what's wrong there thinking is replace most things till we find it. Good luck feeling the frustration

I had a similar problem on my 991 'Cooling system fault contact dealer' before I booked it in I had a cursory look under the rear of the car and noticed a small rubber pipe had disconnected from the exhaust valve on the OSR. I popped it back on but still booked the car in. The fault code was reset at the dealer and the tech told me I had resolved the problem ! Im sure the OPC will have checked these so can only assume if its the problem I had, is a vacuum issue that can set off the coolant system fault code. All to do with thermo settings on the engine

Sorry as I meant to reply when I got the car back to let you know what the issue was, for anyone else with a similar problem. So after a week of Guildford having the car & having replaced various things that the computer was telling them, the technician then used old fashioned mechanical diagnostic testing to confirm that it was the diaphragm in the airbox was not working & as that is mechanical with no electronic wizardery the computer couldn't find the root cause of the warning message. When I asked why the diaphragm on 2015 3000 mile car would stop working there only reply was maybe a manufacture issue. So a good example of the computer not knowing everything & good old fashioned mechanical expertise might be more useful. Anyway all fixed now & working fine. Just as a sub-note to say that although annoying this is the first problem I've had with any of my 911,s & this is my 5th one I've had from 996's, 997's & a previous 991, so not all doom & gloom.

Hi, I got the message (cooling system fault visit workshop) yesterday on my 981 Boxster. Where exactly is the pipe you mentioned, can you see it from under the car or do you need to access from above? any help appreciated.

Had a similar problem a while back on my 991 - yellow warning message re coolant system. Porsche dealer took it in under warranty and confirmed that one of the vacuum driven change over valves was not operating, so they swapped it out telling me it is a fairly common fault. They also replaced another change over valve a few weeks later when I got another yellow warning telling me that the 4WD drive system had shut down - again they said they had come across this before. Oh and they also swapped out nylon bushings on the brake pedal - car is manual - on hot days, this was causing the pedal to stay partially depressed. Apparently this was also a well known fault though no recalls?

I’m having same message on my 2017 718 with 45,000 miles on it. Warranty just expired like 9 weeks ago. Want to get it fixed before we sell it. Or trade it in . They can’t pinpoint problem. "Coolant faulty see Porsche service " or something like that. It does sound like a vacuum seal? Help me if you can . Thanks and Merry Christmas to all of you and stay safe!

Do you have PSE? I took my car to a Porsche Specialist in the Cotswolds, and we think the problem was possibly something to do with the solenoid valves/actuators, the fault message that this problem throws up is obviously misleading as all temps and cooling were checked and they were fine. Good luck I hope you get your problem resolved. Merry Christmas Carl

Hi Guys, I appreciate this post is a few years in the making but, as with many 991 owners I now have the "Fault cooling system" warning. I took to local Porsche garage and they confirmed COV is the issue but cannot tell me which one, which I thought a bit weird? The cost to replace one valve was.....expensive! Having read many many posts about the COV, I was thinking about doing the replacement myself. I've looked at the drawings I can find online and it appears that the COV for coolant is just inside the rear wing, drivers side. Has anyone done this replacement before, is it a full bumper removal or is there an easier way? TIA
