I Think This Is the One Summer Trend That Always Looks Expensive

Let me start with a disclaimer: I've never been on safari. In fact, I think you will find that most of the fashion folk who don the safari trend have never hopped on a Jeep, let alone set foot on a game reserve. After all, there's nothing designers love more than taking a theme and distilling it into a fashion-friendly caricature. And as long as it's not cultural appropriation, we're totally happy to jump on the fantasy bandwagon.

So, yes, our fashion safari is less Kenyan grasslands and more concrete jungle, but sometimes a bit of escapism is just what we need during these troubled times. Goodbye reality, hello, Meryl Streep in Out of Africa, Prince Charles in a full safari suit circa 1984 (which was definitely not designed for roughing it, might we add), or Nigel from The Wild Thornberrys (just me?).

I loved the look so much it became my chosen summer style persona. I've never been one for the bells and whistles of boho, or the ditzy florals favoured by most 20-somethings, and while I'm not a fully committed minimalist , I do find myself erring on the side of simplicity, and the safari trend ticked all the boxes. While prints can sometimes be tricky to nail on a budget, I found that the clean-lined tailoring and utilitarian vibes of the trend looked instantly premium.

Style Notes: Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that dad sandals have been everywhere this summer. Undoubtedly one of the more practical items on this list, if you go for a pair of Tevas, you can genuinely take them on a safari (shock horror) while ticking the trend box.

Style Notes: Tailored, high-waisted and long-line, safari shorts have been the fashion girl's go-to this summer. Typically paired with a tank top and chain necklace, they can be seriously flattering if you get the length right.

Safari Dressing Is Going to Be Your New Go-To Look

The safari trend is taking hold at Fashion Week , and I'm a big supporter for one key reason: it's a look that's up to your own interpretation. I'm sure you'd dress differently than me if I told you we were hitting up Serengeti National Park in Tanzania bright and early tomorrow morning. You might plan to take the sporty route, in khaki-colored cargo shorts and sport sandals, and I could go for sharply tailored separates in shades of green, tan, or rust. You can also take the safari trend a bit more literally, topping a utility jumpsuit with a leopard-lined bucket hat. From the streets to the Spring 2020 runways, ladies are going there. Well, not all the way to Tanzania, but you catch my drift.

Irina Shayk exhibited a subtle take on the style at Brandon Maxwell's show — her wool, camel blazer and olive leather slacks were a natural pairing in just the right color scheme — and on the other end of the spectrum, Kate Spade New York's collection was literally referred to as a city safari in the presentation notes, and there were oversize, sun-shielding hats at Self-Portrait that might as well have been accessorized with binoculars. The safari trend can be as extreme as you want it to be, though if you want to stay more subdued, you can just invest in a faint zebra print like POPSUGAR's own Laura Lajiness, who channeled her safari vibes in Ulla Johnson.

Outfit Formula: Safari Chic

Safari-inspired outfits need little explanation. It’s a classic look in shades of tan, beige, olive, cinnamon, mustard, toffee, black and white that defies the trends and is always in style. Ralph Lauren does Safaric Chic to perfection every season. You can choose a traditional safari vibe, create a fashion-forward combination, or keep the look Safari Chic Lite. Remix safari classics like utility jackets, pants, vests, skirts, shorts, shirts and shirt dresses in any way that tickles your fancy.

Here is an assortment of safari items.

On to some easy ways to incorporate safari items into outfits.

1. Column and a Jacket

Create a casual neutral column of colour in black or white with a top or bottom. Layer a safari jacket over the top and finish things off with footwear that works with the outfit. Safari looks tend to use boots, oxfords, slides, mules, gladiators, espadrilles and sandals in shades of brown and tan to complete the look. Here, I like the fashion-forward addition of the glitzy fashion sneakers. Mother of pearl and tortoiseshell jewellery are nice additions. A brown or white bag too.

2. Shirt Dress

Safari shirt dresses with a utility integrity come in a large variety. Short, long, fitted, boxy, belted, unbelted, sleeved or sleeveless, collared or uncollared, so take your pick. This one is boxy and short, and completed with a straw hat, strappy slides, and a structured brown bag. I can see an earthy neckerchief work well here too.

3. Utility Shorts, Tank and Gladiators

If you like to wear utility shorts, try a pair in white. Combine it with a black tank top, brown gladiators, and an earthy bag to match. An olive pair of shorts is as fab. If you feel like being matchy-matchy, throw a safari jacket over the top when it’s chilly.

4. Casually Dressy

Safari jackets can be tailored or fluid, so pick your level of structure. The tailored versions, especially when they’re buttoned up like this one, tend to look dressier. That said, you can combine a dressier safari jacket with casual bottoms like these silky linen cargo pants with ankle ties, or jeans. To further amp up the dressy, add dressy footwear and a structured bag. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

Safari is one of my favorite summer looks. I think I have at least one safari outfit every summer, so I pick up pieces that fit whennever I see them. o One of my new summer dresses fitsright in with this…and I have an old utility shirt that goes perfect as well. Old Navy has a pair of shorts right now that looks very safari…I’ve been wanting to give them a try…

I like safari looks a lot, but since I do not wear warm colors well next to my face, always have to be careful which pieces choose. I like all the looks shown here, however I wouldn’t wear the shorter shorts in #4. I wanted a safari/utility shirtdress this summer, but am yet to find one in a cooler color and midi length. My favorite is outfit #4, and would love, again, a cooler colored version.

While I like the safari look on others, it is one I rarely wear. The warm colors aren’t my best and it can feel a little off for my lifestyle. Utility jacket over a column of color? Absolutely. There are lots of appealing and functional elements to it snd i look forward to checking out the finds. Piece by piece, ‘non-deliberate’ safari light may work out.

My outfit today might just fit into this category, by sheer coincidence—cream-colored Lauren top, khaki green KftK shorts. It’s at the end of the WIW I just posted.

Should’ve included that safari is not a look I wish to wear, because of the reference to the Age of Empire and what that entails for most of the world. Many of us were offended when Melanie chose this look for an official trip to Africa.

Fun looks! I like no 4 in particular. I have a similar jacket in black but would love another in tan or olive green. I would wear it in a more urban way with boots and my black coated jeans. Last year I (briefly) had a similar dress to no 2 (mine was midi length) but it shrank in the wash. Grrr.

These safari looks get a thumbs up from me, especially in the more saturated or creamy white tones. Ooooh, that copper/clay BR field jacket is lovely!

I keep going back to #2. So beautiful—from head to toe.

Love safari outfits but find too difficult to wear. Safari-inspired garments are in my color palette , so I’m attracted to them but most tops have chest pockets, something that I avoid. I still hope to find an olive safari jacket. Maybe one day…

I love the timeless elegant relaxed safari look and will enjoy seeing it on others. Generally, the traditional safari colours look boring on me.

I like this look, especially #4 but would be more likely to do #1 or #2 with closed espadrilles rather than sandals and enjoy the shorts and sandal look on others. With the jacket, this may be something to aim for in the fall.

I like safari style and have had safari inspired suiting previously. Currently I don’t have anything distinctive in my wardrobe but love #4 which is similar to styles I have worn previously in caramel, white and black.

I love these colors but avoid safari details because I don’t want to look like Melania in Africa.

I have mixed feelings. I’m not wild about the colors for me, and as has been mentioned, I’m also a little put off by the colonialism overtones of overt “safari” styling. I have to chuckle a little as someone who has actually gone on a safari trip — no one really dresses like this anymore anyway.

That said I like a good structured utility jacket or pants with functional pockets. I’ll stick with sage-y toned olives rather than tan. A column outfit with a sage utility jacket is my nod to this style.

Probably one of my all-time favourite styles. The dressier looks were my summer go-tos for my sales jobs – and there is nothing I love more than a crisp short-sleeved safari style dress . I’d wear #’s 2 and 4 in a heartbeat.

I do like the look of the rounded neckline on that Banana Republic jacket. Fitting that it was once called the ‘Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company’

I agree with @FI that the connotation makes it so that I don’t like to go ‘full’ safari (plus the lines are too harsh on me), but the concept is practical enough that I often incorporate ‘safari lite’ details into my summer hiking capsule wardrobe (like neckerchiefs & cargo pants in warmer colours, since those suit me best). My husband calls them my ‘explorer’ outfits, lol.

Ordered a tan utility jacket earlier this week. If it works out, I will take a run at replicating look #1.

I love all four outfits. The style and color palette works well for me.

I like the shirt dress in 2 but would choose a different color (and it would need to be a little longer)! I just remembered that I have a similar dress in black which I have not worn since I bought it right before the pandemic and didn’t reach for it in my very casual at home summer 2020. I like the look of the shorts with pockets in 3.

I love safari chic style. I would wear any of the outfits shown but #4 is my favorite.

#4 for me. What I like about the safari look is pockets! I prefer the darker shades and white. I feel really unlike myself in lighter tans.

I concur with the comments by FI, Janet, and Cat2 regarding the colonialism overtones in some full on safari looks. If you like safari chic style, do it in your own way. Just don’t make the mistake of accessorizing with a pith helmet, an offensive symbol of colonialism. There are lots of more suitable sun protection hats available.

I love safari chic! Number 2 shirtdress is terrific – although wrong colour for me.

I love all of these (especially 4) but alas, I think Melania pretty much ruined the safari look for me. Pith helmet or no pith helmet…

I love these elements and outfit ideas, especially #1 and 2. The look meshes with my personal style, though I tend to incorporate bits here and there and not full-on since it feels costumey for me (living near Disneyland does not help either). And as others have mentioned, not the most culturally sensitive either.

Ditto on trying to find pieces without too much detailing on the upper half. I have an awesome unlined lightweight olive field jacket from Treasure & Bond that works with everything. Seriously, threw it on over pajamas for a late night ER visit and it looked cute. A good utility shirt dress is a HEWI for me though…

The safari look has always been one I enjoy on others; it’s just not for me. I tend to wear softer, drapier styles and fabrics in different colors than these looks. That being said, I like those Rag and Bone mules in your Finds, especially in black, and could see them working with my non-safari style.

I agree with others re. rejecting the colonialist overtones. Head to toe (complete with pith helmet!) reads as extremely offensive, IMHO, but a nice structured jacket in olive green with lots of pockets, yes please! I also like “military-inspired” items (which share a lot of characteristics with some of these featured looks), but never head to toe. I prefer to think of clothes like these as falling into the “utility” category, e.g. utility pants, a utility jacket :).

I love look #1 and am already wearing a version of it. The pants/shoe combo in look #4 does not appeal at all. Generally, I like khaki in small doses, but not for a complete outfit.

I’m not too fond of the colonialist overtones of the Safari Chic looks, but I like the colour palette, structured pieces, and wearable outfits. Many of my warm weather outfits have some Safari pieces in them. I also like to call them utility pieces which Jonesy mentioned.

I have always felt a bit uncomfortable with the connotations/ referents of safari chic (not that it has stopped me from buying a lot of clothes from Banana Republic!) — much as I feel awkward about most camo. Still, having said that, I like all of these, though I probably wouldn’t wear them in true safari colours since those hues don’t suit me well. Still, #1 is really appealing, as is #4.

I love #4 even though it’s not something I would wear. I really like these looks. I have worn cargo pants and liked them. I like the idea of a dress, too.

I will try to maintain my love for these looks by remembering Meryl in Out of Africa. Also I will add a camera around my neck to emphasize that there are safari experiences that don’t involve firearms.

FWIW, the people I know who spend a lot of time in Africa are mostly building wells so girls can go to school instead of carrying water all day.

I nodded with many of the references in the comments from the Banana Republic in the West Village to the colonial overtones to the lack of match to the color scheme. I am not especially into any one particular dress theme (safari, military, rocker, etc.) but can think of individual items in my wardrobe that would fall into all these categories.

I just am now getting a chance to see this. I want to go through each of these options. I had an olive shirt dress that I passed on recently that I absolutely loved! I like the style in small doses.

Really like the look . I would wear 2 and 4 .

The thrill you feel on a safari is indescribable and so it’s only fitting that you pack a wardrobe that suits the adventure of the journey. When selecting clothing pieces for a safari it is important that you keep durability as your primary concern. 

Safaris in Africa are no place for peep-toe shoes and mini skirts. You don’t want to show up overdressed and so it’s essential that you do your research before packing for your trip. You will be surrounded by wildlife and it’s only appropriate you choose clothing pieces that work in harmony with mother nature.

Key Clothing Pieces for a Safari 

Once you have worked out all your details regarding your trip, the next most important step is creating a wardrobe fit for the wild. Down below are wardrobe staples that you absolutely need if you plan on going on a safari any time soon.

You want to look for something lightweight and breathable. Pick out synthetic or linen shirts. Also, invest in one or two full-sleeved shirts to shield you from mosquito attacks. 

Pants 

Jeans are a staple clothing piece, just not for safaris. You want to pick out loose-fit pants like cargo pants. When picking out fabric, you want to look for something more flexible that can work in both heat and humidity. Neutral and earthy tone clothes are perfect for safaris. Khaki and green colors are two excellent options and they pair wonderfully with other safari clothing pieces. 

Shorts are great for the days you plan to sit in the back of a jeep. They are a great way to beat the heat and stay fashionable. 

Try out rompers and one-pieces for the days you want to look cute but adventurous. Dresses with animal prints are also fitting for a safari. They look great in pictures, but if you plan on walking, it’s best you stick to pants. 

Jumpsuits 

Another one piece that makes for an extremely summer-chic outfit . All you need is a hat and a pair of boots to make a jumpsuit suitable for a safari. 

Swimsuits 

Packing a swimsuit depends on where you plan to go on a safari. If it is somewhere with nice beaches, you should pack one or two swimsuits to get to experience the beach life as well. 

Jackets 

A safari jacket is the best style of jacket you can take with you on a safari. It was literally created for safaris and so is crafted keeping the harshness of a safari in mind. You should also invest in a corduroy jacket as the weather on safaris tends to drastically change during the night. 

You need two styles of shoes. A pair of cute sandals that you can wear for pictures and jeep rides. The other is a pair of safari boots to explore around in. 

Is it even a safari if you don’t wear a hat?  A hat will not only protect you from the heat but it will also pull your whole look together. Plus, who doesn’t like a good hat? 

5 Different outfits for 5 Days on a Safari 

It’s not enough to just know about the clothing pieces you need. You also need to know how to style them. Throwing on a bunch of pieces will get you dressed but it won’t make an outfit. We have put together a few different looks in accordance with the most popular fashion trends of 2024 .

Safari Chic

Start off your safari in style and opt for a white linen shirt. Pair it with high-waisted khaki shorts, a chic safari hat, and a pair of sandals. Tie an earthy-tone scarf around your neck to give the overall look a cute twist. 

Alternatively, pair a white cotton shirt with khaki pants. Add on knee-high brown boots to create a western-themed outfit . This look is both easy to pull off and functional. 

Safaris tend to get colder during the night. You can add on a brown leather jacket to this look to shield yourself from the cold. 

Girl On The Run 

Something about rompers just makes them an excellent choice for safaris. When picking rompers, it’s best to gravitate towards earthy tones like brown, beige, and green. These colors don’t absorb as much heat and look extremely chic. 

When styling a romper, you have to invest in some eye-catching accessories. Try pairing a mute green romper with a brown belt and a fedora hat. Finish off the look with strappy sandals. This look is perfect for the days you plan on lounging or cruising. 

Jungle Queen 

Safaris can get brutal. The heat, humidity, and bizarre weather conditions can really get to you. On days like this, you want to stay covered up but in breathable clothing pieces. Jumpsuits are a great option since they cover you from head to toe and are available in a bunch of different colors. 

To keep with the safari theme, style a brown jumpsuit with beige sandals. Add on a floppy hat and you are ready for the day.

One thing most people overlook on safaris is the drop in temperature during the night. There are a few different ways in which you can take your jumpsuit from day to night. You can either wear a white linen shirt over the jumpsuit or you can cover up with a safari jacket. Either of these options will keep you warm yet stylish. 

Safari Elegance 

Who says you can’t wear dresses to a safari?  When we say dresses, we don’t mean body-con or slip-dresses. Dresses appropriate for a safari include flowy maxi dresses and safari dresses. There are a bunch of different ways you can wear them. 

A day spent feeding giraffes is a great opportunity to wear a dress and click some memorable photographs. Pick a lightweight maxi dress, with a floral or animal print. Add on a hat and some basic sandals. 

If you plan to spend the day out in the wild, a safari dress will be better fitting. Safari dresses have a more structured silhouette. They aren’t flowy yet they have enough movement to identify as a dress. They come in standard safari colors and look stunning when paired with brown belts. Complete the look with either shoes, sandals, or safari boots. 

Classy and Sophisticated 

Pants are the best option for bottoms when it comes to a safari. They are durable, flexible, stylish, and functional. They keep you covered and protect you from the sun and bugs. A beige safari shirt, tucked into green corduroy pants creates an archaeologist sort of look. Complete the look with safari boots and a wide-brim hat. 

On the days that corduroy becomes unbearable, pick something more loose-fitting like cargo pants . Cargo pants look great on safaris, not to mention how handy all the pockets are. A safari shirt paired with cargo pants and brown safari boots creates a safari-friendly look.   

Evenings, on a safari, are a time to relax and change out of your dusty day wear. A long-sleeved shirt, pants, and boots create the perfect look for an evening out. You can also add on a jacket to keep warm. Try to wear light-colored clothes to avoid mosquitos.

What Is Safari Fashion?

It’s a jungle out there, and you’ll need to be appropriately attired if you wish to stand out this season.

Safari-inspired fashion has been popular since the early 1970s due to its practical nature, timeless elegance, and sexy details. Choosing the ideal safari attire is critical, and not just for selfies. Safaris are exciting and adventurous, and safari fashion integrates all of these elements while keeping you safe and secure while on the wild trip.

Safari Fashion: A Brief History

The safari look was inspired by British officers and the jackets they wore during their campaigns in Africa. The word is associated with a specific style or theme, including khaki clothing, slouch hats or pith helmets, belted bush jackets, and animal skin patterns.

The British military first sported the pith helmet in tropical regions, and it was later adopted as streetwear from 1870 to 1950. Safari jackets were even described as crisp drill cotton with a belt, pockets, epaulets, buttons, and a part of the Kenyan colonial style.

During his post-presidential trip in 1909–1910, Theodore Roosevelt was “outfitted” in safari-style by his buddy Lord Cranworth. Newland & Tarlton, Lord Cranworth’s firm, is a high-end safari outfitter that creates safari-style clothing. Other sources claim Roosevelt was fitted by Willis & Geiger in 1908.

On a safari tour, Hemingway, like Roosevelt, preferred British-style rifles made by Westley Richards or Holland & Holland. Safari jackets were even worn by celebrities such as Johnny Weissmuller and Grace Kelly. Ernest Hemingway wore safari-style jackets, conveying a sense of adventure echoed in Hollywood, and the Safari jacket is still a component of modern fashion.

In the spring/summer 2005 issue of British Vogue (see what makes Vogue such an iconic magazine here!), an article titled “Haute Safari” featured clothing in the “Haute safari” style. Melania Trump and other modern American public figures have donned safari attire. During her trip to Africa in 2018, Mrs. Trump wore safari-style jackets and a dress.

Mrs. Trump traveled on a safari in Kenya while on this trip, wearing a pith helmet. Several have criticized the choice, claiming it evokes colonial ideals. 

Harper’s Bazaar published trend alerts in 2014 that featured a “safari sleek” style and animal prints, and safari-style variations were featured in the collections of couture designers in their 2015 fashion shows.

During Paris Fashion Week, designer Yang Lei showcased a silk safari-style evening gown in the Spring/Summer collection. Meanwhile,  Alexander Wang’s collection was dominated by white shirts, including a safari-inspired white shirt dress. In 2015,  the New York Times described Alberta Ferretti’s daywear collection as “safari-sleek.”

According to John Molloy’s history of the leisure suit, safari-style began from British officers donning their uniforms outside of army purposes as a status symbol, but only in casual settings. Molloy asserted in 1975 that it is still a type of casual menswear. In Malindi, Kenya, professional attire in the 90s included safari-style clothing.

Yves Saint Laurent’s Africa collection in 1967 featured the “Saharienne” safari jacket, and the brand later produced an iconic safari top. As per Harper’s Bazaar, the catalog was a primitive genius fantasy. On the other hand, various fashion historians believe he possessed the ability to borrow from one culture without becoming condescending to the other.

After the launch of the movie Out of Africa, the term “safari chic” arose. Not only did it include clothing but also architecture and interior design. African decor, natural materials, various shades of brown, rugs, animal print furniture, and wallpaper are common features of safari-style interiors. Architectural Digest published a list of luxe safari camps in 2005.

The Newland, Tarlton & Co. Furniture Collection designs luxury safari-style furniture for featured hotels, safari camps, and private residences. Safari fashion extends to Ralph Lauren’s fragrance collections; the Safari fragrance, launched in 1990, was marketed as a floral scent with a light breeze fragranced by freedom, grasses, and the romance of vast open spaces.

How to Achieve a Safari-Inspired Look

Natural textures and earthy tones are essential for your jungle adventure; bold colors are a no-no because they can attract insects and wild animals. Beige, brown, khaki, cream, and tan should be your go-to shoe and clothing colors.

Try incorporating a silk scarf in muted colors or layering gold accessories to amp up your outfit and add an exotic touch. Straw hats are also essential; aside from providing sun protection, these hats are very feminine and trendy. Then, finish your safari look with a straw or suede bag in neutral colors—consider both style and utility when selecting one.

Short-Sleeved Shirt

Let’s take a cue from the boys this summer and wear a boxy short-sleeved shirt. It’ll look great with beige tailored trousers, but it’ll also look great above a long-sleeved top once autumn comes.

Utility Jumpsuit

Simply choose a jumpsuit in a neutral color with a boxy fit and pockets to achieve the safari look.

Safari Jacket

The safari jacket is another iconic piece that never goes out of style. The modern-day iterations of the latest utility jacket trend come belted with overly large pockets and in beige and khaki colorways.

Tailored Shorts

Safari shorts, tailored, long-line, and high-waisted, have been the fashion women’s go-to this summer. When paired with a chain necklace and a tank top, they can be extremely flattering if the length is just right.

Velcro Sandals

Unless you are pretty outdated with the trends, you’ve probably noticed that dad sandals are everywhere this summer. Undoubtedly among the most practical things on this list, a pair of velcro sandals can be worn on a safari while also ticking the trend box.

How to Wear the Safari Style in the Modern Era

Designers went on a sartorial safari in both the womenswear and menswear collections, with utility details and muted hues. It’s clear that no one wants to glorify big game hunting as more and more fashion houses choose to ban exotic animal skins and fur.

The safari trend is inspired by the cool, khaki-wearing style icons of the past, such as Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas In The Mist, actors Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in Out Of Africa, and even Prince Charles, who has been wearing safari jackets since the 1970s.

How do you update the safari look to make it more modern? The color scheme is crucial. Consider khaki stone, beige, green, and sandy tones that can be mixed and matched.

Shorts with patch pockets or chinos nod to the trend and can be paired with a tonal T-shirt. Swishy shirtdresses have a softer silhouette and can be dolled up with statement jewelry (for a pop of color) and heels or down with flat sandals. Animal prints complement the urban jungle theme as well. Make a statement with a bold print dress or add intrigue to a neutral-toned outfit with some fierce footwear.

What Should You Wear on a Safari?

Of course, safari fashion would not be called that if you do not wear it on a literal safari. The clothing you should bring on your safari trip will depend on the time of year and the type of safari you are going on. Nonetheless, there are some universally applicable tips.

There’s never been a better time to wear earthy colorways, khaki, cargo, prints, and a great hat. If you’re going on a safari and are worried about what to wear, don’t be. Here are a few easy-to-copy looks to help you dress for the outdoors.

Silk Print Set

No rule says you can’t try to blend in with the wildlife. The animal print fabric is eye-catching and will make you stand out. The silky soft material is ideal for those lengthy scenic game drives, providing a comfortable fit without sacrificing style.

If you like to stand out, pair it with some minimal gold jewelry, and you’ll be ready to make a statement.

When you see someone dressed in cargo, you know they’re serious about their business. Nothing says safari chic like a well-fitting cargo outfit. Cargo pants are an exciting and comfortable option for creating an outstanding outfit. There’s a reason Karen Blixen wears cargo throughout the film “Out of Africa.”

Combining cargo with accessories in a similar color brings the whole look together. Whether ankle boots or Doc Martens, a pair of boots is the best option.

The White Shirt

We’ve been looking for ways to make the white shirt larger than just an item to wear to work for a long time. A safari is yet another opportunity to show off your white shirt; there is no greater way to beat the heat in the savanna.

Take it a step further by pairing the shirt with a printed skirt. You spend almost all of your time in the car being driven around, so you might as well look nice while doing it.

Dress It Up

There is no reason for leaving your dresses at home. You not only get to glamping (glamorous camping) or laze around the camp the whole day when you aren’t out on walks or drives. Bring sleeveless dresses and belts to elevate the style and get more wear out of a solitary dress.

Don’t be afraid to wear wedges to intimate dinners.

The Tracksuit

Of course, as with any other type of travel, comfort is essential. Tracksuits appear to have withstood the test of time in fashion, making a constant comeback with many materials and colors to choose from.

Morning game drives are notoriously chilly, and the tracksuit is your one-stop-shop for warmth and comfort on those chilly mornings. Wear a pair of boots to elevate this look from basic to chic. It is both comfortable and stylish.

The Jumpsuit

It would be a shame not to highlight the classic khaki Jumpsuit. This piece is unquestionably the epitome of Safari style. With just one piece, you appear to have it all together.

The best colors to choose are jungle green or brown. Having it cinched at the waist will draw attention to anyone’s curves. Put on your knee-high boots to enhance the look, taking it from street fashion to safari fashion.

Who said you couldn’t take leather into the wilderness? Because we’ve honestly never heard of such a thing. A plain leather skirt is lovely, but a snake print skirt is out of this world. When paired with subtle brown tones, you’ll look like a fashionista.

A hat and a coat add a touch of class to this daring look. Take your leather pieces on your next safari; the limitless pairing possibilities.

The Shirt Dress

Shirt dresses are almost always a perfect fit. This one falls almost as low as a maxi dress. Pairing it with boots and a chunky belt is a great way to make it stand out in the wild. To remain bold but sophisticated, keep it neutral.

It is no secret that smartphones, technology, and social media have altered how we dress, travel, and do almost everything. “If you didn’t catch it on camera, it didn’t happen” has become the norm. This comes with the additional pressure of finding a balance between looking good and being comfortable while traveling.

Fortunately, the internet provides many opportunities to feed our inner chic wanderlust. Safaris are more than just trips to be one with nature and see animals; they are also an opportunity to express yourself creatively. You must plan your safari outfits in the same way you plan your weather or appropriate outfits for the cultural context.

Traveling and looking fantastic is an experience that everyone should have. There is no moment to be bored in such a beautiful world, let alone in a boring outfit.

Getting some great shots of the scenery and yourself makes it worthwhile. So, get out there and slay your upcoming safari.

Fierce fashion: How to wear the urban safari trend this summer

Cool khakis and utility details are trending this season for everyone, says katie wright....

IT’S A jungle out there, so they say, and you’ll need to be suitably attired if you want to stand out from the crowd this season.

Designers ventured out on a sartorial safari for spring/summer 2021, with muted hues and utility details in both the menswear and womenswear collections.

This is not a literal interpretation, we hasten to add. As more and more fashion brands choose to ban fur and exotic animal skins, it’s clear no one wants to glorify big game hunting.

The safari trend is about taking inspiration from the cool, khaki-wearing style icons over the years, like actors Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in Out Of Africa , Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas In The Mist , and even Prince Charles, who has been rocking safari jackets since the Seventies.

How do you take the safari look and make it modern? The colour palette is key. Think khaki green, beige, stone, and sandy shades that you can mix and match.

For guys or girls, chinos or shorts with patch pockets nod to the trend and can be teamed with a T-shirt in a tonal hue.

Swishy shirtdresses offer a softer silhouette and can be dressed up with heels and statement jewellery (if you want to add a pop of colour), or dressed down with flat sandals.

Animal prints also work well with the urban jungle theme. Make a bold print dress the star of your outfit, or add interest to a neutral-toned ensemble with some fierce footwear.

Going On Safari? Melissa Biggs Bradley Shares Her Packing Tips

Melissa Biggs Bradley, CEO and founder of member-based luxury travel company Indagare , is a pioneer in the luxury travel space. With extensive knowledge in the art of getting from A to B, Bradley’s latest endeavor, Safari Style: African Camps and Lodges (Vendome Press), comes to no surprise.

Safari Style was born out of Bradley’s “long love affair with safari.” At age 12, Bradley went on her first expedition, and since, she’s been on several dozen. “Over 30-plus years, I have witnessed an incredible evolution in terms of the kinds of places you can stay, the experiences you can have, the regions you can explore, and most importantly, the positive impact that travelers can have on conservation and community empowerment,” Bradley tells Vogue. “The book is really a celebration of that evolution of style and impact of the beauty of the bush and my favorite places to stay on safari.”

While featuring the varied regions and styles of safari, it was also essential for Bradley to choose properties that represented the potentials of safari tourism. “Every property focuses on conservation and community impact and shares their efforts with guests,” she says.

Here, Bradley’s insider tips for safariing in style.

Where to Stay

“It is truly impossible to pick one [place],” says Bradley. “Which is why I cover many diverse regions from the desert in Namibia and the Serengeti in Tanzania to the great concessions and parks in Botswana and South Africa and the mountains in Rwanda.” Safari Style covers 21 properties in 7 countries, “and each one can be guaranteed to deliver an unforgettable safari and aesthetic experience,” Bradley explains. From palatial lodges to incredible tented camps that use cutting-edge sustainable infrastructure, many of the properties listed in the book are built to be taken down in a few weeks—to leave no trace and maximize luxury. “Plus, there is such a spectacular range of style and design in eastern and southern Africa, and all the lodges in the book incorporate the natural surroundings and local heritage, which makes them so special,” says Bradley.

“Of course, iconic properties like Singita Sasakwa in Tanzania and Mombo Camp in Botswana are included, but I also included newer ones like Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in Namibia and Bisate in Rwanda,” she explains. To Bradley, not only are these some of the most amazing camps in Africa from an aesthetic point of view, but they also represent many of the best companies and families spearheading some of the most innovative safari experiences.

What Clothes to Pack

According to Bradley, who has spent more than a collective 100 days on safari, “the focus should be on comfort. Often to reach camps, you have to fly in small bush planes with very strict luggage restrictions of no more than 44 pounds packed in soft-sided luggage .” Temperatures also change, so Bradley suggests dressing in layers to keep covered from the sun. According to Bradley, key essentials include long sleeves, a great hat , sunglasses, good walking shoes , and a jacket or vest with lots of pockets for your camera, sunscreen, bug spray, wipes, and lip balm.

Bradley explains that lighter colors, like beige, camel, grey, hunter green are practical and not as attractive to tsetse flies—common insects in the bush who flock to black and blue colorways. “If you plan to spend time out of the vehicle, on a walking safari, for instance, boots that cover your ankle and high socks are also recommended,” she explains.

While packing light and smart is key, if you are someone who likes to have options, the good news is all of the camps listed in Bradley’s book do regular overnight laundry “and you can always go straight from a walk or drive to dinner, so there is no need for formal clothes or even many changes of clothes,” she explains. “In the bush, you want a comfortable uniform tailored to the elements, and a small selection of high-quality, versatile pieces is the way to go.” Specifically, Bradley suggests you bring only one or two of these daytime, layerable uniforms as they will be washed daily.

Almost all lodges have swimming pools, so sandals, a bathing suit , and a cover-up are also a must. “I like to wear a kaftan around camp between game drives,” says Bradley. “I use packing cubes to keep my bush clothes separate from my city or travel clothes and always have a few great shawls, which can dress up an outfit or keep you cozy around the campfire.”

The only time to consider packing a few dresses or other nighttime looks? If you’re adding other stops to your journey, like Cape Town or South African Wine Country, “which have many fashionable restaurants and bars,” Bradley says.

Fill Your Dopp Kit

As far as non-clothing essentials go, aside from the obvious camera (and plenty of chargers), Bradley travels with “a pretty extensive toiletry kit, with everything from burn creams and antibiotics to antihistamines, bug spray with DEET and immunity boosters like oregano oil and tiger balm.” Bradley explains, “Since you spend most of your time outdoors, I bring lots of sunscreens from Dr. Barbara Sturm SPF drops and Trish McEvoy tinted moisturizer to organic mineral powder by Eminence .”

“I find it really liberating to go back to a uniform,” Bradley explains. “I remember when I was in grade school, and we had a uniform, one of the teachers said that the uniform dress allowed you to focus on learning. I feel that on safari, when I return to my bush uniform, that I am free to focus more fully on the environment, the wildlife, and the joy of being in Africa, unencumbered by too many belongings to look after. Part of the joy of safari is stripping away the trappings of civilization and being closer to nature, and stripping down your wardrobe adds to that. The experience is better if what you wear—and what you don’t wear—is in sync with the reason you’re there.”

Functional But Chic African Safari Packing List You Can Pack in a Small Duffel Bag

You might not be planning to head to Africa anytime soon, but I promise there is something for everyone in this post! I’m sharing a packing list that can be used to help pack for many types of trips and some chic and casual spring and summer outfit ideas. You still here? Okay, awesome!

Africa has been on my personal bucket list for years. Anyone remember my old video on YouTube where I talk about turning 40 and all the things I still want to do (8 years ago)? I mentioned visiting Africa in that video. Anyway, years later, we planned THE trip… for April 2020. Needless to say, that timeline didn’t work out.  So after years of dreaming, planning, cancellations, etc. we finally made it! This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip that I’m so excited to share with you all!

African Safari Packing List

When we first started planning the trip, I had this clear vision of what I wanted to look like. My inspiration was Meryl Streep’s character in Out Of Africa or  Julia Schlaepfer’s character in the show, 1923 . Have you seen either of those??

Then… I found out I could only bring one 40-lb. duffel bag because of the plane’s weight restrictions. This was maybe one of my greatest packing challenges yet! But I wasn’t ready to give up on my chic African safari outfits…and from what you’ll see from the outfits below, I still got some stylish looks to fit in that duffel! Depending on your specific trip, you might want to pack differently, but if you’re headed to Africa during the dry season, the packing list above will be super helpful.

A few tips and notes…

• Most camps do laundry for you daily (for free) so you only need to pack minimal socks and undies.
• To minimize, you could bring only one pair of shorts and only one jacket. I mostly wore one jacket (you’ll see below).
• I packed two long dresses and wish I had packed one short and one long instead. Which is why you’ll see that reflected in the list above, but you’ll see two maxis below.
• To make packing easier, stick to a color story. You’ll see below that I went with greens, tans, and whites. That is by design as it’s suggested you wear earth tones on safari.
• This list is for anyone traveling during dry season and into fall.
• If you look up other packing lists, you’ll see lots of specific gear to pack vs. more fashion-focused clothing. I don’t think you need serious outdoorsy gear for this trip.
• Make sure that all toiletries, skincare, and makeup are travel sized to cut down on the amount of space you use in your bag.

Outfit #1) White Top & Green Shorts

This first outfit is one I’d wear for spring/summer even at home…no Africa trip necessary! I’m wearing a pretty white eyelet top by Velvet. It’s 100% cotton so it keeps you cool, but you get that arm coverage with the long sleeves. I’ve styled this top with denim shorts and jeans but for this look, I’m wearing a pair of super chic green shorts by DL1961. These shorts have a high waist (12.25”), pleating details on the front, a wider A-line leg style (a must for flattering shorts!), and cool cargo-style details. The cargo trend is very big right now so all of the pieces in this post will be great for your spring/summer wardrobe. On my feet, I’m wearing some Golden Goose sneakers, but you can go with a different, more affordable option. Just make sure it’s a chic and stylish pair of sneakers that are comfortable! I kept the jewelry minimal with a pair of Julie Vos hoops.

Outfit #2) Green Pants, Tan Tee & Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket

Next up, I’m wearing a pair of green Paige pants that you’re going to see A LOT more of in this post. They’re a jogger style with cargo pockets in this gorgeous military green color. They are a 26” inseam, which is perfect for me to wear with boots, sandals, or sneakers. These pants are one of those pieces you can have in your closet to dress up or down and they look SO chic. In this look, I styled them with a tan Nation LTD tee. It has subtle puffed short sleeves, a flattering V-neckline, and button front details. For warmth, I recommend taking a vest like the one I’m wearing above by Patagonia.

Cargo Jacket

Over the vest, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard cargo jacket that you’ll be seeing throughout the rest of this post. This jacket and the Paige pants were my most-worn pieces from this trip. And the jacket has remained a heavy hitter since we returned home. It’s such a gorgeous, special piece with cargo details and a zip-off bottom so you can wear it long or cropped. It’s like you’re getting two jackets for the price of one! Of note, you go on safari early in the morning and during the evening. It gets pretty chilly so you definitely want to wear layers as I did above.

Accessories

To complete the look, I’m wearing a few accessories you’ll be seeing more of in this post…because again, I was only allowed that one duffel bag! I’m wearing my go-to Rag & Bone hat I’ve owned for years. Just trust me, it’s worth the investment. Around my neck is a gorgeous neutral scarf from Banana Republic that’s so luxe-looking. I added a western-inspired belt by ba&sh but you could go with whatever brown belt you already own. On my feet, I’m wearing some Sam Edelman combat boots…comfort was key during this trip and these did the trick! Plus, they’re such a good, neutral pair of boots, I know I’ll wear them again. To finish off the look, I’m wearing some Julie Vos jewelry and my Celine sunglasses.

Outfit #3) Green Romper

Next up, I’m wearing a chic green utility-style romper by Simkahi. I love the cinched waist, oversized lapels, and capped sleeves. It’s that pretty olive green color I tried to tie into all of my outfits with the pants, hat, and a tee you’ll see in some of the looks below. I kept it simple and wore a pair of Madewell slide-on sandals that are really comfortable and a great shoe to have in your closet this summer. I only brought three pairs of shoes on this trip…these sandals, the boots from the last look, and the sneakers from the first look. The belt back I’m carrying is from Banana Republic and was perfect for carrying the essentials and being hands-free. I completed the look with a Julie Vos bracelet, a pair of hoops, a subtle Monica Vinader necklace, and come sunglasses.

Outfit #4) Tan Tee, Green Pants & Green Utility Jacket

In this look, I’m wearing the same green Paige pants with a tan ATM tee. I love ATM tees because they’re SO high-quality and you’ll wear them for more than one season. Over the tee, I have on a green utility jacket by Good American. It’s super lightweight, has an oversized fit, and was perfect for this trip.

Outfit #5) Rails Button-Down & Green Shorts

Is it any surprise that I packed my Rails white button-down shirt? I take it on every single trip I go on no matter what the destination because it’s THAT versatile. If you don’t already have a high-quality casual button-down for summer, this is what you’ve been looking for! I wear it with everything from shorts and jeans to skirts and swimsuits. In this look, I’m wearing it with the same green DL1961 shorts from Look #1, the Madewell sandals, my belt bag, and some gold jewelry.

Outfit #6) Vix Swimsuit with Rails Button-Down Shirt

I mentioned I wear the Rails button-down with swimsuits and this is what I mean…it makes the perfect coverup! The swimsuit I’m wearing is a sexy, strappy bikini by Vix. Vix is one of my go-to brands for chic and sexy swimsuits and I love the waxed rope and cutout details on this bikini. I wore this when I took Elizabeth to the pool one day.

Outfit #7) Green Tee, Pants & Cargo Jacket

Yep, these are the same green Paige pants! This time, I’m wearing them with a green ATM tee that’s the same style as the tan one, just in a different color. I love the monochrome look. But for a little added warmth and style, I threw on the tan Veronica beard jacket. I completed the look with the Rag & Bone hat, Banana Republic scarf, ba&sh belt, Sam Edelman boots, and some sunnies. See how important the layers are? I was able to take off the jacket to get cooler.

Outfit #8) Green Tee & Cargo Shorts

In this outfit, I’m wearing the same green tee and Veronica Beard cargo jacket… but this time, I’m wearing matching Veronica Beard cargo shorts! It’s hard to see the shorts in this picture but trust me, they’re good . I love the look of the shorts and jacket combined and it’s really easy to style casually with a tee. The shorts have the same chic cargo details as the jacket, a flattering A-line silhouette, cool contrasting stitching, a high waist, super lightweight material, and they’re comfortable!

Outfit #9) White Short-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

Did I mention I love those ATM tees? 😉 This white v-neck is also by ATM and is my most-worn tee. I know it’s a little pricey for a T-shirt but it lasts more than one season, doesn’t yellow around the armpits, and washes and wears really well. I styled it with the same green pants, tan cargo jacket, and accessories.

Outfit #10) White Long-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

If you liked the last look but want a little coverage, this white Nation LTD tee is one I’ve owned for years and is great for covering my chest and arms! I love the big billowy sleeves, smocked cuffs, and that it’s 100% cotton, so I stay cool. I could have styled this tee with any of the other bottoms I packed but I stuck with ol’ faithful…the green Paige pants. 😉

Outfit #11) White Button-Down Shirt & Green Joggers

In case you were getting tired of the Paige jogger pants…here’s a different pair of joggers! These are by James Perse and I’ve owned them for about two years. They’re SO comfortable, have an elastic waistband, are 100% cotton, and are the perfect length for me (I’m 5’4”). I styled them with my Rails button-shirt, tan cargo jacket, and combat boots.

Outfit #12) White Top & Green Joggers

Next, I styled the same James Perse joggers with the white eyelet top from Look #1. I wore this while we were exploring Cape Town and I was not prepared for how cold it was there. I threw on my Patagonia vest, Veronica Beard jacket, and scarf for added warmth.

Outfit #13) Brown Cutout Dress

While we were in Cape Town, I wanted to feel a little more elevated instead of wearing my safari clothes so I went with this beautiful brown Indah dress. It has a v-neckline and cutouts at the waist that are very flattering, a long dramatic maxi length, and billowy sleeves. For a photoshoot at our lodge, I styled it alone with some gold jewelry. But in Cape Town, I wore my Veronica Beard jacket and zipped off the bottom to get that cropped length. I added my scarf for warmth, belt bag for convenience, and combat boots for comfort.

Outfit #14) Pink Cutout Dress

I mentioned in my tips above that I wish I had packed one long dress and one short dress. I wore this beautiful pink Simkhai cutout dress to shoot photos in but didn’t get a chance to wear it for anything else, which is why I’d recommend some sort of short cotton dress instead. BUT…I do love the dress and think it’s a great special occasion piece if you have an event or wedding coming up. You can throw on a shawl, jacket, or blazer for added coverage too. I styled it with most of the jewelry I packed for the trip to really add some oomph to the look.

Skincare & Makeup I Packed

Below I linked all of the skincare and makeup I packed for this trip. My biggest tip is to make sure you have travel sizes for everything. You could buy travel-size containers and transfer all of your product to them, but it’s much easier to buy the travel sizes if they’re available!

More About Our Trip

Every trip to Africa can be different depending on what you want to do, when you go, where you want to go, and what you want to see. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips so it’s important to do your research or even hire a travel agent to help you plan your perfect trip to Africa!

Here is a quick rundown of our trip for anyone who’s interested…

• We flew into Johannesburg and stayed at our airport hotel.
• Then we flew to Kasane and Chobe National Park in Botswana and stayed at The Sanctuary. They had 2-bedroom lodges perfect for our family and it was the closest to the park. We loved our guide, Chika!
• Then we flew from Kasane to Nxabera in Okavango Delta and landed on a dirt landing strip and our safari guides arrived early to ensure no animals were on the runway.
• We stayed at andBeyond , which ended up being our favorite place we stayed. They sang on our arrival and departure which was so sweet. The tents were connected by a passageway which made me feel comfortable. You don’t want your kids to be alone without easy access to you in these camps. And we loved our guides Richard and KB!
• Then we flew to Kasane and drove to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We did a canopy tour, zip lining, a tour of the falls, and an elephant excursion where you could touch and feed wild elephants. We stayed at The Elephant Camp , which was very close to the fall and the activities we did.
• Then we flew to Cape Town. There we swam with sharks, went whale watching, had some fun dinners, and did a Table Mountain visit. We flew home from Cape Town.

We have 10 days on Safari or in the bush in Namibia (Safari clothes) and 4 days in South Africa. Remaining 7 days are is in cities or travelling to and from JNB/Windhoek/Madikwe. I have a couple of questions for you. 1. Noticed the kids wore some light tan pants , same as the guides. How did that colour go re laundering? Was there any red dirt marks that wouldn’t come out? I have cargo joggers that colour…. 2. How chilly did it get (early morning/evening) in Botswana and how warm during the middle of the day, please? I’m trying to gauge if extra layers (light merino mid layers, cami undershirt) needed for evening and night drives vs middle of day clothes. Oh my gosh, Erin, I came upon this post at just the right time while searching for African safari fashion inspiration. I hit the jackpot here! Thank you! I’m 46, I feel like 26, and I like to think I look 36 (but that may just be a dream). Like you we have been planning our trip (to Tanzania and Zanzibar) for years and we’re finally heading there in July 2023. I’m insisting upon making every outfit count (cute and practical) but unfortunately we’re limited not to 40lbs but to only 33lbs per person, including any carry-ons, cameras, bags, etc. Fortunately, because my husband is like most other guys, he’ll only be needing about half of his weight allocation…I’ll make sure of that. :). Without having seen your packing list, it’s uncanny how much our lists already overlap…down to the Paige joggers, Golden Goose sneakers, R&B fedora hat, BR scarf, romper, green utility jacket, and more. I absolutely adore your Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket, but I’m guessing that will be a casualty of the weight restriction…but maybe not. Fingers crossed. I had also hoped to pack a long-sleeved utility jumpsuit, cargo leggings, linen safari dresses, and some cute lugged-soled canvas sneakers (in addition to my GG sneakers, and Frye combat boots…which I had already purchased before seeing your really cute Sam Edelman boots…. which leads me to my two questions. The best approach is to work with your African tour operator to help you figure out exactly what you should pack for your safari trip. Overall, several factors will influence you dressing when in Africa:

• The need to keep warm in the morning and evening.
• The need to protect yourself from the shrubs in parks and the hot sun.
• Clothes that make it easy to walk around the parks, beaches, nature trails, and different attractions.
• And lastly, the need to take jaw-dropping photos for your African Safari Album, Instagram, and Facebook

So, now that you have an idea of what to consider when selecting your attire, let’s share some tips on what you should pack for your African Safari.

Your head will appear in all your photos and will, therefore, determine the tone of your fashion sense. Luckily, there are numerous options to dress the head for male and female tourists.

You can pick the headgear in the USA or buy from the numerous tourist markets in Africa. The tourist markets offer a chance to pick a souvenir and assimilate into the local culture.

Choose the bolero or toquilla straw hat for men or women. They are also referred to as Panama hats because they fit the tourist lifestyle. The hats give you a tourist feeling and will also shield your eyes from the scorching overhead sun. The hats are available in any country, especially made from local materials.
