Potomac In Good Shape For Pro Circuit Event

Veteran Tom Monsoor captured his first tour-level win the last time the MLF Pro Circuit (formerly FLW Tour) visited the Potomac River in 2017.

The MLF Pro Circuit visits Marbury, Md. this week for the fifth stop on the 2021 Pro Circuit. The tournament gets under way today and runs through Sunday.

The Pro Circuit last stopped at the Potomac in 2017, when Wisconsin veteran pro Tom Monsoor hoisted the trophy for his first tour-levl win, bringing a four-day total 66-11 to the stage. Prior to that, in 2015, Texas pro Clark Wendlandt – a three-time Angler of the Year (AOY) – won his fourth career Pro Circuit event on the fishery bringing with 60 pounds even. Washington's Luke Clausen , a former FLW Cup and Bassmaster Classic champion, holds the record for the heaviest four-day winning weight on the Potomac with a total of 69-14 back in 2011.

“The fishery is very healthy with a tremendous population of largemouth bass that are pretty eager to bite, so it should be a fun tournament,” said Pro Circuit angler Todd Walters of Kernersville, N.C., who finished 2nd MLF Toyota Series event held on the Potomac in 2020. “Everyone is really looking forward to this event.”

The Potomac is a tidal fishery, running roughly north to south into Chesapeake Bay, with water that fluctuates a couple of feet per day. Due to the constant ebb and flow, fishing is almost always shallow, either in the grass and pads or around hard cover such as rock and wood.

“The water is in really good condition,” said Walters. “The grass is just starting to grow about 2 to 4 feet off the bottom, so that’s where you’ll find most of the bass."

While there are a few sections of the main river that come into play, the bulk of the damage tends to be done in the mouths of the creeks, with some hot creek arms attracting a ton of fishing pressure.

“This is an area that I’m familiar with and that I’ve fished before – it has a tremendous population of largemouth bass and they are going to bite at some point in the day. It just depends on the tide during the tournament,” said Walters. “On the Potomac River, 90 percent of the fish are in 10 percent of the water, so it will fish small. But there are plenty of fish in those areas to be able to handle the 163 boats in the field and everyone should catch some fish.

“I expect to see guys dropshotting Senkos in a slack tide, then when the water’s moving, they’ll be throwing swimjigs, ChatterBaits and shallow-running crankbaits,” continued Walters. “You’re always going to have some dock fish and you can catch them flipping jigs and creature baits. I didn’t see any areas with matted grass where you’d need to punch it, but I expect to see guys flipping their jigs and creature baits in those thicker grass beds when the tide’s slack.”

Walters said he believes it will take 13 to 14 pounds per day to make it to the final round and anticipates a four-day total of 70 to 75 pounds will win the event.

Anglers will take off at 6:30 a.m. ET from Smallwood State Park, located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury. Weigh-ins will also be held at the park daily at 3 p.m. Fans are welcome to attend the event or follow the action online through the MLF NOW! livestream and coverage at MajorLeagueFishing.com .

The full field of 163 anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The Top 50 pros based on their two-day cumulative weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition on Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Clark Wendlandt Leads Day One of FLW Tour Potomac River

2017 flw tour potomac river

FLW 2017 Potomac River Day One Leader Clark Wendlandt – photo courtesy FLW

MARBURY, Md. (June 15, 2017) – Pro Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas , grabbed the early lead Thursday after Day One of the FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by Costa Sunglasses with five bass weighing 19 pounds, 11 ounces. Wendlandt will begin Day Two with a 5-ounce advantage over second place angler Yamamoto Baits pro Tom Monsoor of La Crosse, Wisconsin , in the four-day event that features the world’s best bass anglers competing for a top award of up to $125,000.

“To be honest, I didn’t really think I’d catch them like that today,” said Wendlandt, who won on the Potomac River when the FLW Tour last visited in 2015. “I really struggled early on. I only had three fish in the boat at noon. I thought I would do better later on in the day, but couldn’t get anything going then either. The middle of the day was really the only time I did well.”

Wendlandt said he caught around 18 keepers throughout the day, and that the bulk of his weight came from one area.

“I practiced from Washington D.C. all the way down to just about as far as you can go on the river, and it was the best place that I found,” said Wendlandt. “There were a lot of boats in there today, so I think tomorrow could be a lot harder. At some point I may just have to bail and go do something else.”

Wendlandt said that there are still plenty of options for him to catch a decent limit, even if his primary area is overcrowded.

“The Potomac River is a unique fishery because you can catch them from grass one day and out of wood and rocks the next,” said Wendlandt. “Everything can be good, it just depends on the tide. I guess I’ve been good at knowing the right places to fish at the right time.”

Bryan Schmitt wins Mississippi River FLW Tour

SCHMITT WINS FLW TOUR ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

Maryland Pro claims first FLW Tour victory, wins $125,000

LA CROSSE, Wis. (May 21, 2017) – Pro Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland , weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 10 ounces Sunday to win the FLW Tour at the Mississippi River presented by Evinrude . Schmitt’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 61 pounds, 6 ounces, was enough to edge second-place pro Joshua Weaver of Macon, Georgia, and win the top prize of $125,000 in the four-day event that featured 160 of the world’s best bass anglers competing in La Crosse.

Already a well-known river expert, Schmitt built his career by picking apart the Potomac and James rivers. Schmitt was able to apply that expertise to Pools 7, 8 and 9 on the Mississippi River this week and earn his first career win on the FLW Tour.

“My knowledge of the rivers I fish back home was 100-percent key for me this week,” said Schmitt, a five-year Tour veteran who has amassed more than $680,000 in FLW competition. “I’ve never been here, but I fell in love with how it was setting up.”

Schmitt said his sweet spot this week was a barricaded pond on the lower end of Pool No. 8. He described it as a section of water near the main-river channel that was surrounded by sandbars which protected fish in multiple phases of the spawn.

“I don’t know if it was there from years and years of current building up the sandbars, but at some point local authorities may have added riprap to make it stay,” said Schmitt. “It had two main trenches that ran through it and had plenty of deep water. At the very top there was a hole in the rock jetty that let current flow in. It had all the right variables – just enough current to bring food in, grass and spawning habitat, and the deep water for when they were done.”

Schmitt said he spent the majority of his tournament in the area, noting that all but three of the fish he weighed in came from it.

“I think the fish that I was catching were both prespawn and postspawn,” Schmitt said. “Fresh fish were moving in and the big ones that were done were moving out.”

Schmitt said that his primary lure this week was a black and blue-colored prototype Riot Baits Swim Jig with a swimming trailer. He also used a black and blue-skirted vibrating jig with a Riot T3 Tattle Tail Swimbait and a 5-inch Texas-rigged Riot Stick stickbait with a 1/2-ounce tungsten weight .

“Before my main pattern evolved, I caught quite a few by just pitching the stickbait to grass,” said Schmitt. “It got me a lot of key fish on the first two days, but the bigger ones wanted the moving baits.”

The final event on the FLW Tour schedule for the 2017 regular-season happens to be on the Potomac River – a place where Schmitt has three Costa FLW Series wins. Schmitt expressed that he is eager to finish the season on a high note.

“I’ve got the momentum now,” said Schmitt. “After all of this, words can’t describe how excited I am to get back out there and compete on the Potomac.”

The top 10 pros finished on the Mississippi River:

               1 st :          Bryan Schmitt, Deale, Md., 20 bass, 61-6, $125,000

               2 nd :         Joshua Weaver, Macon, Ga., 20 bass, 58-11, $30,700

3 rd :          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 20 bass, 58-10, $25,100

               4 th :          Todd Auten, Lake Wylie, S.C., 20 bass, 58-0, $20,000

5 th :          Yamamoto Baits pro Larry Nixon, Bee Branch, Ark., 20 bass, 57-9, $19,000
