Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Queens Of The Stone Age tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Queens Of The Stone Age add intimate acoustic show to 2024 Australian tour

A black and white portrait of rock band Queens Of The Stone Age

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Queens Of The Stone Age will be back in Australia next month, with a string of massive rock shows locked in around the country.

They've just added a special new date, with Hobart audiences getting a second show when the band are in town for MONA FOMA.

As well as their big, sold out outdoor show, the band will play an intimate show inside MONA, which has always been a happy place for the group.

"I want to play acoustically," Josh Homme said in a statement today.

"I love to play Mona. It's a chance to do something nice and this is a situation where it's very simple to do something nice."

That nice thing is raising funds for the  Royal Hobart Hospital Children’s Services and 24 Carrot Gardens, who will receive all the money from this special show.

It happens at MONA on Thursday 15 February and tickets are on sale now. Scroll down to see all the band's Aussie dates.

Care to spend the summer with rock gods Queens Of The Stone Age and some ass-kicking special guests?

Fresh from the release of their new album, In Times New Roman… , QOTSA have locked in plans to return to Australia for 'The End Is Nero' tour, extending the apocalyptic ' Rome is burning! ' messaging of their eighth full-length record.

Josh Homme and his formidable bandmates – Troy Van Leeuwen , Dean Fertita , Michael Shuman , beast drummer Jon Theodore – hit our shores from February, playing venues and outdoor shows in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, MONA FOMA in Hobart and two shows in Brisbane!

Queens Of The Stone Age also head up an expanded bill of acts for Lookout concerts in Torquay, Victoria and on the Gold Coast. More on that right after this handy reminder of why QOTSA are one of the most widely revered rock acts on the planet.

Some excellent special guests have been lined up to support QOTSA at each show.

There's few better warm-up acts than psych rock cosmonauts Pond , fronted by the magnetic, bug-eyed Nick Allbrook and pulling from an acclaimed catalogue now nine albums deep .

You've also got emerging Melbourne/Naarm five-piece Gut Health . The Unearthed faves fuse angular post-punk and new wave sounds with a menacing charm (you need to hear 'Uh Oh' ), which makes for a riotous, infectious live show.

In addition to Pond and Gut Health, two of QOTSA's dates will feature alt-rock national treasures Spiderbait , who are sounding as match-fit as they've ever been, Josh Homme's ol' pub-punk mates The Chats , as well as young grunge-pop idol Lola Scott .

The last time Queens Of The Stone Age were in Australia was 2018, for "the kind of rock show that would make a teenager want to start a band".

This was after a set at  Splendour In The Grass , where triple j proclaimed they "remain one of the most visceral, vicious, sexiest things to ever happen to rock music, and still among the top tier doing it."

Fans have had their fingers crossed that a new album meant another visit Down Under, and the feeling's been mutual for QOTSA's frontman.

"Look, Australia is my home away from home. It has been for 16, 17, 18 years… I can't wait to get there," Homme told Double J earlier this year in a candid interview  covering what's been some of the lowest points of his career.

In recent years, Homme was diagnosed with cancer, saw close friends die (such as  former QOTSA bandmate Mark Lanegan , Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins , and food and travel icon Anthony Bourdain ), and began a messy public custody battle with ex-wife Brody Dalle.

"I learned an awful lot in the last four or five years," Homme said. "I don't think I've ever learned so much in such a short period of time."

He took those lessons and funnelled them into the emotional exorcisms of  In Times New Roman… , cultivating Homme's ongoing realtionship with cathartic music-making.

"It's totally worth it because it works. I don't have a therapist: this is my religion, this is my therapy, this is my way out."

You can share in one of Homme and co's patented rock 'n' roll sermons at the following dates on the Queens of the Stone Age 2024 Austarlian tour.

Tickets are on sale Monday 30 October, 1pm local time. There's a pre-sale kicking off from 25 October. Find more info at the Live Nation website .

More Queens Of The Stone Age

According to a new social media post, Queens Of The Stone Age will return to Australia and New Zealand in summer 2024.

Captioning the post with a reference to a single from their latest album, In Times New Roman…, the band wrote, “#TheEndIsNero” with accompanying Australian and New Zealand flag emojis. “Be the first to slake your thirst…” and a link to sign up to their mailing list, which you can find here . Check out the teaser below.

The caption sits alongside a striking image, which says that Queens Of The Stone Age are hitting the following cities in summer 2024: Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Torquay, Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast and Brisbane.

The band’s tour also stretches out to New Zealand, with the post hinting at dates in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In the coming weeks, we should have an update on the group’s forthcoming AU/NZ tour.

Queens Of The Stone Age released their new album , In Times New Roman… in June 2023. The album was preceded by the single Emotion Sickness, a rollicking rock and roll number that hints at the “raw, at times brutal and not recommended for the faint of heart” music on the new LP.

The band’s leader, vocalist  Josh   Homme , and bandmates  Troy Van Leeuwen ,  Dean Fertita ,  Michael Shuman  and  Jon Theodore  come together to create “the sound of a band creating the music its own members want to hear while giving the rest of us a sonic forum in which to congregate”.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

In Times New Roman...  was recorded and mixed at Homme’s   own  Pink Duck Studios  (RIP), with additional recording at  Shangri-La . The album was produced by Queens Of The Stone Age and mixed by  Mark Rankin. In Times New Roman… was the follow-up to 2017’s Villains .

Queens Of The Stone Age last toured Australia in August/September 2018. In a live review of their show at Brisbane’s Riverstage, The Music writer Lauren Baxter commented that the gig was “only about guitars, drums and good ol’ fashioned rock’n’roll ”.

In a separate review of their concert at the Hordern Pavilion, The Music ’s Brendan Delavere concluded that “Homme and co once again prove that rock'n'roll ain’t dead .”

From there, the Queens will journey to Adelaide, Hobart, Torquay, Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, and Brisbane, before crossing the Tasman to grace the stages of Auckland and Wellington. The grand finale of their rock odyssey will be in Christchurch on the 3rd of March.

Locally, you’ll be able to catch them for the first time at the Torquay Common on Sunday 18 February, where they are headlining the inaugural Lookout Festival. Lookout is a live music concert event that celebrates the best of alternative rock with music that has stood the test of time, along with some fresh new sounds on the scene. It will feature some of the most iconic names plus rising stars making noise in the industry. The festival will also feature Spiderbait, The Chats, Gut Health, Pond and Lola Scott.

The End Is Nero tour serves as a raucous celebration of their acclaimed eighth studio album, In Times New Roman…, which made a thunderous debut at #2 on the ARIA charts.

Emerging from the sun-soaked backdrop of 1990s Palm Desert, California, Queens of the Stone Age epitomize what happens when a multidimensional musical entity transcends the very genre it birthed. They’ve proved too prolific, too ambitious, and just too brilliant to be confined within any musical boundaries. The band, led by the enigmatic Joshua Homme, has morphed into the colossal force responsible for chart-toppers like No One Knows, Little Sister, My God is the Sun, The Way You Used To Do, and everything in between. They are undeniably rock, but with the visceral energy and dark magic that only Homme and his ensemble can summon.

Regularly anointed as one of the paramount live acts, Queens of the Stone Age is an ensemble comprised of Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita, and Jon Theodore. What started as “generator parties” in the desert has evolved into sold-out arenas and headlining the main stage at your favourite summer festival. The End Is Nero tour promises to be a spectacle that should not be missed.

The general on-sale for the tour begins at 1 pm (local time) on Monday, 30th October. For a comprehensive rundown of tour dates and ticket information, head  here .

A Rock Renaissance Down Under: Queens of the Stone Age Tour

About queens of the stone age.

Queens of the Stone Age, the band that redefined rock music, is making a grand return to Australia in February 2024. Known for their unique blend of heavy rock and exploratory musical styles, the band is set to perform across various cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Torquay, Gold Coast, and Brisbane.

The Band's Legacy

Each concert location is a gateway to exploring the diverse attractions that Australia has to offer, from Sydney's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge to Melbourne's bustling laneways and cafes.

The tour includes a special performance at the historic Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. This iconic venue, known for hosting a variety of events, offers an intimate concert experience with one of the world's most dynamic rock bands.

I am unbelievably disappointed having spent £120.00 that I only saw some of The Hives. I left the festival in 30 degree heat, unable to get a drink unless I was prepared to queue for up to, or over 2 hours. This was unfeasible given the temperatures and the fact that I would miss the bands.

I was then told I was not allowed to re-enter the festival if I left. THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS! We were not allowed to take refreshments inside the festival. We COULD NOT get a drink inside the festival and then were penalized for getting refreshment outside the site. Why was there no re-entry? This policy should have been immediately changed when you realised you were unable to provide adequate refreshment.

I would expect a refund as this was a terrible experience and one I will never repeat. I missed the bands I wanted to se because of your dreadful lack of planning.

I expect a reply please at your earliest convenience.

It was a pretty poorly organised affair if I am completely honest.

The queues for the bars were totally ridiculous and some of my friends left early as they were just so fed up with waiting for a drink.

That said, the bands were staggeringly good. I've been following QOTSA since 200 and have lost count of the number of times I've seen them but can honestly say that this was amongst the best I have seen them. Josh was on good form and the crowd were loving it. (Iggy had warmed them up nicely).

Before that we saw Brody Dalle, whose new stuff is excellent and benefited from the drummer and guitarist from Savages helping her out.

Deap Vally were excellent, as were Skinny Girls Diet but somehow, Miles Kane didn't fit into the line up.

Nice shows, shame about the organisation!

Queens of the Stoneage were Amazing,I have seen them Twice in the UK but this Gig was so much Better,Josh Homme & the Band were on Top Form Playing All their Big Singles Aswell as Tracks which they would not Normally Play like Songs From The Deaf & Millionaire which were Amazing,We came to the Gig Because Royal Blood were Supporting & we are Massive Fans of Theirs After Seeing Them Live in Cardiff on Their How Did We Get So Dark Tour Last November in Cardiff,I would Love to See Queens Of The Stoneage Play in the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff as on this Album Tour they only played London & Manchester which was a Real Disappointment as we always try to see them,we Seen them on the Era Vulgaris Tour in the 02 in Bristol when Josh Homme was not well & the Like Clockwork Tour in Birmingham 21/11/13 which they were good,I would love them to come to the Capital of Wales to play as they do have Loads of Fans here too,Fingers Crossed.

Queens Of The Stone Age Australian Dates

Queens Of The Stone Age will return to Australia and New Zealand on their Villains World Tour, performing nine huge headline shows for Frontier Touring throughout August and September.

will queens of the stone age tour australia

They will be joined at all shows by Australian blues maestro C.W. Stoneking.

‘Queens Of The Stone Age, you beautiful bunch of freaks. Rock’n’roll just doesn’t get any sexier than the sounds this band lovingly wrench from their instruments and these skillful players perform with a synergy that proves they’re a band of brothers who genuinely rate each other.’ – The Music

Helmed by founding member Joshua Homme (guitar/vocals), with Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), Dean Fertita (guitar/keys), Jon Theodore (drums/percussion) and Michael Shuman (bass), Queens of The Stone Age will kick off the AU & NZ leg of their Villains World Tour at Auckland’s Spark Arena on Thursday 23 August.

From there, the rock’n’roll legends will perform a second New Zealand date at Christchurch’s Horncastle Arena, before landing in Australia to perform shows in Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide closing out the tour at Perth Arena on Wednesday 12 September. These shows make good on Homme’s promise made while on our shores last year of returning before too long:

“Everybody who knows me knows that Australia is my home away from home.” – Josh Homme

Tickets to all dates go on sale on Thursday 3 May – head to frontiertouring.com/QOTSA for all of the details.

Following hundreds of epic shows, six genre-defining albums and multiple Grammy nominations, Queens Of The Stone Age blasted forth once more from the Californian desert last August with their most recent acclaimed chart-topping seventh album, Villains (released via Matador Records/Remote Control Records).

Featuring fan and radio favourites ‘Head Like A Haunted House’, ‘The Way You Used To Do’ and ‘The Evil Has Landed’, Villains was named #8 on Rolling Stone’s ‘50 Best Albums of 2017’ list and debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA Album Chart.

C.W. Stoneking, the embodiment of what some would say is a bygone era of music, will join Queens Of The Stone Age as special guest at all Australian and New Zealand shows. From his rasping jungle-rock-blues, to his well-oiled locks, and his familiar, though increasingly less frequent, all white clothing ensemble, he has converted fans across the world to his unique style.

Over three albums (King Hokum, ARIA award-winning Jungle Blues and his most recent release, Gon’ Boogaloo), and countless tours both here and abroad, C.W. has delivered his own brand of swampy rhythm and blues via his larger than life persona, incredible musicianship, and epochal performances.

Currently in the midst of wowing fans on a massive USA run and returning to our shores off the back of dates in Japan, Queens Of The Stone Age are not to be missed. Arguably one of the best rock bands on the planet, and armed with their latest rock masterpiece in Villains, these will be the tightest shows you’re ever likely to see. Their 2017 AU & NZ tour completely sold out immediately – don’t delay!

Australian psych band Pond headlines the New Parish

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: May 13, 2024 / 12:35 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

While they have not yet ascended to arena-filling heights of sibling Australian psych band Tame Impala, Down Under rock band Pond has a loyal and growing fanbase thanks to the prolific output of principle songwriter Nick Allbrook. Formed in 2008 by Allbrook and fellow Tame Impala member Jay Watson -- TI main man Kevin Parker used to play drums in the band and has produced almost all of their albums -- the Perth-based group started out crafting a much wilder, more unruly style of psychedelic rock.

The band issued a pair of albums through Aussie imprint Badminton Bandit Records that were recorded in a home studio on eight-track before garnering wider recognition from their association with Tame Impala, eventually signing to the larger Australian label Modular Records. While the two bands delve into similar echo-drenched sonic vistas, Pond initially employed far heavier guitar riffs with a funkier, more irreverent approach on 2013's  Hobo Rocket.  The group veered easily from the delicate, fractured pop of "O Dharma" to the punchy swagger of face-melting tunes like "Xanman" and the title track.

Strangely, that album was actually recorded after Pond decided to temporarily shelve the already completed effort  Man, It Feels Like Space Again , which ended up finally being released in 2015. In some ways, the effort   presaged Tame Impala's drift into propulsive dance beats and woozy synth sounds that marked TI's biggest hit album so far,  Currents.

The band would continue into that more electronic funk/pop direction with The Weather  in 2017 and its follow-up companion piece album Tasmania  two years later, with Allbrook's soulful vocals and sassy delivery at times recalling classic Prince and Beck as it rode the band's propulsive, still psychedelic grooves. The band also released the live album Sessions  ahead of the pandemic shutdown that would curtail Pond's touring activity in 2020.

The following year, the group released its first album not produced by Parker in almost a decade with 9 . Another freewheeling exploration of synth-driven funk and expansive neo-psychedelia, the effort became their highest charting record in their native country and was reissued in a deluxe version with four additional tracks in 2022.

After a period of relative quiet, Pond returned to action earlier this year with the release of the soaring new anthem "Neon River," the lead single for their forthcoming new tenth full-length album Stung!  set for release next month. After playing a string of dates across Australia supporting Queens of the Stone Age in February, the band has returned to the U.S. for a tour featuring stops at the Shakey Knees Festival in Atlanta and the Kilby Court Block Party in Salt Lake City along with select headlining shows to promote their upcoming new effort. Pond's Bay Area stop at the New Parish in Oakland Wednesday night will be opened by 26fix, the stage name used by Utah-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Erika Goodwin, who crafts a left-field style of psychedelic indie-funk.

Queens Of The Stone Age live at Mad Cool 2023: a band reaching the peak of their powers

Josh Homme and co. mark the midway point of the Madrid festival with a fearsome set that any artist would be nervous to follow

Having already made headlines with their recent run of live performances – including a viral mosh pit at Glastonbury  and an onstage appearance from Spider-Man in Belgium  –  Queens Of The Stone Age raised the bar once again tonight (July 7) at Mad Cool 2023 by delivering one of their strongest festival sets to date.

With numerous festivalgoers frantically sprinting from the Sam Smith set that just wrapped up on the Mad Cool stage, from the second Josh Homme and co. step onto the Madrid Is Life stage it becomes clear they have no intention of easing their audience into the set. Launching with fan favourite ‘No One Knows’, the frontman immediately has the Madrid audience in the palm of his hand – and the intensity only ramps up from here.

  • READ MORE: Queens of The Stone Age: “This album sounds as brutal as it feels to be alive right now”

“If we play a little bit more, is that alright?” Homme jokingly asks at one point, not needing to wait for the eruption of approval that follows. Even when devoting a large portion of the setlist to newer tracks – ‘Carnavoyeur’, ‘Paper Machete’, ‘Emotion Sickness’ and ‘Straight Jacket Fitting’ from June’s ‘In Times New Roman…’  – there’s no doubting that Queens are producing one of the most captivating performances of the entire festival.

Queens Of The Stone Age at Mad Cool 2023. Credit: Javier Bragado.

Of course, the set wouldn’t be complete without the usual playful antics from the band. There’s the moment when Homme teases the crowd by asking them to sing louder due to it being bassist Michael Shuman’s birthday (a minor white lie), while during the stripped-back ending of ‘Straight Jacket Fitting’ the frontman busts out some questionable dance moves atop the front speakers after recruiting the crowd as his personal a capella choir.

Despite being one of the veterans on the Mad Cool 2023 line-up –  which prides itself on supporting new talent  – you just get the sense that we are witnessing a band who are reaching the peak of their powers. With 25 years’ worth of material to draw from and a mammoth number of live performances lined up for the rest of 2023, this set proves that QOTSA clearly have no intention of slowing down any time soon.

“This is the best audience we’ve played to this entire fucking tour,” Homme, taking a brief break from practising his Spanish, declares at the end of their set, which climaxes with a frenzied ‘Song For The Dead’. “Look at what we’ve done together! Gracias… motherfuckers.”

Queens Of The Stone Age played:

‘No One Knows’ ‘My God Is The Sun’ ‘Smooth Sailing’ ‘The Way You Used To Do’ ‘Carnavoyeur’ ‘If I Had A Tail’ ‘The Evil Has Landed’ ‘Paper Machete’ ‘Emotion Sickness’ ‘Make It Wit Chu’ ‘Little Sister’ ‘Straight Jacket Fitting’ ‘Go With The Flow’ ‘Song For The Dead’

Queens of the Stone Age rock Wilmington with blistering set, Cape Fear River jokes

S eattle rockers Queens of the Stone Age have been making noise on the rock scene since forming in the wake of the grunge movement in the mid-'90s.

In all that time, however, the band had never played Wilmington, a situation they rectified on Tuesday night when Queens of the Stone Age treated an enthusiastic crowd to a scorching, interactive set at Live Oak Bank Pavilion downtown.

After British rock trio Royal Blood opened with a pummeling set that you could feel in your bones, Queens of the Stone Age took the stage to cheers right at 8:30 p.m., opening with the darkly polished alt-rock song "No One Knows."

Led by the affable singer/guitarist/songwriter Josh Homme, the five-piece band — Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), Dean Fertita (keys), Jon Theodore (drums) and Michael Shuman (bass) — played in front of a dazzling, triangular lighting rig that added lots of colorful flash to to the muscular, mid-tempo rock sound.

Full disclosure here: Queens of the Stone Age, or QOTSA, as they're known, is a band I've always been aware of but never super-familiar with, so Tuesday's concert was a bit of an education for me.

Homme is an engaging frontman. He's got a strong voice that shows its range by soaring into the occasional falsetto, and he uses it to deliver hard-driving songs about both emotional upset and fortitude. They were topics he echoed when he addressed the crowd directly, like when Homme spoke to a 12-year-old boy named Jackson who was watching the show with his dad from the front of a packed pit.

"Never look away. Whatever it is you're scared of, look into it," Homme offered earnestly. "The only way to go through life is with a machete through the jungle."

After introducing his band, Homme said, "And I'm your tenured professor, Dr. Joshua."

The concert was an evening of angular rhythms and moody rockers ("Carnavoyeur") that could be downright orchestral. Songs were accented with slashing, chugging riffs ("Smooth Sailing"), interlocking guitars, bluesy stomps and searing synths ("I Sat By the Ocean"). Van Leeuwen proved the Swiss army knife of the band by playing a whining slide guitar, a pedal steel, even an electric shaker. During "Emotion Sickness," Homme showed off his voice and sang a capella for a time.

Between songs, Homme exhorted the crowd with profanely good-natured affirmations: "Don't be afraid to sing. Don't be afraid to dance. Don't be afraid to love the person next to you. Don't be afraid."

Homme then re-directed his attention to young Jackson down front, telling the boy, "Do everything all the time. Life is short, yesterday is gone and tomorrow never comes. Right now is all that matters."

Homme was also quick with a joke, drawing laughs when he talked about playing next to "a beautiful river that's completely polluted," a reference to the PFAS chemicals that have tainted the Cape Fear River in recent years. "Don't drink it," he said, "but maybe (make love) next to it."

Then, looking up into the condo canyons that surround Live Oak Bank Pavilion, Homme said, "I don't know what day it is. But I love that we're keeping these people in their apartments awake."

Homme then said he didn't want to play the song the band was supposed to play next, and took a request for "Straight Jacket Fitting" from the crowd. During the song he took a wireless mic into the audience and sang part of the song from in the thick of the pit, drawing smiles and pointed phones from the crowd.

He then let the crowd choose "Better Living Through Chemistry," and got the audience singing with him during the sexy strut of "Make It Wit Chu," which segued into The Rolling Stones' "Miss You."

Perhaps exhausted, the crowd barely called for an encore. But the band came back out anyway, playing a spooky and spacey outro that built into a crescendo and yielded an epic solo from drumer Theodore. The show ended on a blistering note as the crowd was blasted with sound and bathed in blinding lights.

As the crowd filed out of the seats down front, one man was overheard to say, "That's the best $40 I've spent recently," proof that Live Nation's "dynamic pricing" model can sometimes work in the audience's favor, at least when concerts don't sell out right away.

Cannes 2024: The 15 Movies We’re Most Excited to See

By David Fear

A musical involving drug cartels, gender identity, and Selena Gomez. A Brooklyn sex worker’s fairy-tale romance involving a Russian oligarch’s son. An Italian director’s tribute to his hometown, via the sort of go-for-baroque filmmaking that’s become rarer and rarer, and a woman named after a siren from The Odyssey. A French filmmaker’s tribute to his own career, filled with past heroes and villains from a rich back catalog. The return of a New Hollywood legend. A high-octane sequel from an Australian New Wave legend. A harrowing yet uplifting doc on Ukraine. A biopic on Donald Trump: The Younger, Pre-Fascist Years!

These are just a few of buzzier titles set to be unveiled once the Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 14, and we haven’t even got to Cate Blanchett communing in a forest with a giant brain yet. An omnivorous moviegoer’s dream come true, the big event on the fest-circuit’s spring calendar kicks off with the latest from auteur/agent provocateur Quentin Dupieux — a Louis Garrel/Léa Seydoux comedy titled The Second Act — and over the next few weeks, will premiere everything from the first half of Kevin Costner’s new Western ( Horizon: Part 1 ) to new works from Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg, Yorgos Lanthimos, Paul Schrader, Andrea Arnold, Jia Zhang-ke, Leos Carax, and a whole lot more.

We’ve skimmed the cream of this year’s Cannes crop, and come up with 15 movies we’re dying to see during the 2024 edition’s run.

‘Anora’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Writer-director Sean Baker ( Tangerine, The Florida Project, Red Rocket ) hits the Croisette with a rom-com centered around a Brooklyn-based sex worker ( Better Things ‘ Mikey Madison) who finds herself in a real-life Cinderella story when she meets a rich, Russian Prince Charming. It sounds like a dream, until, well … you remember what happened to Cinderella when the clock struck midnight, and the carriage turned back into a pumpkin?

‘The Apprentice’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Have you heard the one about the real estate mogul who became a reality-TV star, then decided to go into politics? Holy Spider director Ali Abbasi takes on the rise of one Donald J. Trump, right as this Queens native starts making power moves with the help of a longtime power broker. Sebastian Stan plays the younger Donald (!); Borat’s Maria Bakalova is Ivana Trump (!!); and no less than Jeremy “I’m the Eldest Boy!” Strong is Trump enabler-slash-Prince of Darkness Roy Cohn (!!!). There will be controversy around these screenings. Bet on it.

‘The Balconettes’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

French actor Noémie Merlant ( Portrait of a Woman on Fire, Tár ) reminds you that “writer-director” is also part of her ever-growing resumé, courtesy of this dark comedy about a trio of women — played by Merlant, Sanda Codreneau, and Soheila Yacoub — who begin interfering with their neighbors’ lives during a massive heat wave. Then they take things too far, and suddenly, what started as way of alleviating boredom becomes, per the press notes, “a bloody affair.” Bonus: Her Portrait director Célinne Sciamma co-wrote the script.

‘Bird’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

If you’ve seen British filmmaker Andrea Arnold’s work, then you know she has a knack for finding poignancy in hardscrabble lives, and moments of tenderness within the toughest of coming-of-age circumstances. Her latest sounds like it falls within her Fish Tank -type sweet spot: A 12-year-old girl (Nykia Adams) lives in Kent with her father (Barry Keoghan) and brother (Jason Buda). A mysterious stranger ( Passages ‘ Franz Rogowski) soon enters the picture.

‘Emilia Perez’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

There’s a lot of buzz around the new film from Jacques Audiard, whose extraordinary body of work includes everything from a remake of James Toback’s Fingers ( The Beat That My Heart Skipped ) to a weirdo Western ( The Sisters Brothers ) to the greatest prison movie of the past 20 years ( A Prophet ). All we know about this latest project is that it involves a lawyer (Zoe Saldana), a cartel drug lord yearning “to become the woman he has already dreamt of being,” and Selena Gomez. Also it’s a musical. We’re so ready for this.

‘Furiosa’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Mad Max: Fury Road had a massive, out-of-competition gala screening at Cannes (one day before it was released) back in 2015, so it’s no surprise that George Miller would premiere its follow-up prequel — which gives us the origin story of Max’s female cohort, the mighty Imperator Furiosa — at the festival. Anya Taylor-Joy steps into Charlize Theron’s battered, dusty boots to play a younger version of the postapocalyptic anti-heroine. Also along for the ride(s) are: Chris Hemsworth, playing a character with the A+ name of Dementus; The Souvenir ‘s Tom Burke, as the toughest road warrior in town; and a shit-ton of stunt people risking their lives in the name of analog, go-for-broke screen mayhem. To the gates of Valhalla!

‘The Invasion’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Ukrainian filmmaker Sergi Loznitsa has been chronicling his country’s ongoing civil war with Russia for years, in films like Maidan (2014) and Donbass (2018). His latest documents the nation’s current life during wartime in the face of bombings, on-the-ground combat, and constant hardship. It refuses to pull punches — his films never do — yet this time around, he’s said he wanted to keep focus on the population’s resilience in the face of Putin’s aggressive campaign against them.

‘It’s Not Me (C’est Pas Moi)’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Trust a filmmaker like Leos Carax ( Holy Motors ) to make a self-portrait and then call the thing It’s Not Me. In other words: classic Carax! French cinema’s reigning enfant terrible -slash-oddball genius has concocted a 40-minute featurette of experimental autofiction, casting his longtime collaborator and screen counterpart Denis Levant to play both the director and what we’re told is a host of past characters from Carax’s movies. Mind — blown!

‘Kinds of Kindness’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Yorgos Lanthimos’ follow-up to Poor Things was supposed to come out right on the heels of that Oscar-nominated juggernaut, under the title And… , last year. Thank god that we got a chance to catch our breath before his next round of disturbing absurdism hits us and likely leaves us reeling. It’s a triptych of stories that features a to-die-for cast — including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Hunter Schafer, and Mamadou Athie — many of whom play different roles in all three chapters. “Kindness” is always a relative term in Lanthimos’ universe, so take that word’s inclusion in the title with a boulder-sized grain of salt.

‘Megalopolis’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

For close to 40 years, Francis Ford Coppola has been chasing a story built around the concept of utopias, visionaries, and the rise and fall of empires. Now, the maestro has finally caught his white whale and turned a dream into a reality. The early word on Coppola’s epic featuring [ deep breath ] Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, the Midnight Cowboy duo of Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, SNL ‘s Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, and Coppola family members Talia Shire and Jason Schwartzman has been divisive, to say the least — responses range from “masterpiece” to “dude, WTF?!” But there’s no film we’re looking forward to seeing more at this year’s Cannes than this tale of artists vs. politicians, and the fact that Coppola is premiering this late work at the same festival that gave Apocalypse Now its inaugural, “in-progress” bow feels like a full-circle moment. Good or bad, it’s undoubtedly going to be unforgettable.

‘Oh Canada’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

It’s hard to think of a living Hollywood filmmaker who’s had such a major third-act rejuvenation as Paul Schrader; ever since First Reformed suggested that the New Hollywood lion-in-winter had experienced a creative second wind, the 77-year-old has delivered bold, uncompromising dramas about complicated characters working their way out of existential ruts ( The Card Counter, Master Gardener ). Now, Schrader tackles another work from the late, great novelist Russell Banks, the same author who gave him the source material for 1997’s Affliction. A writer (Richard Gere) decides to make peace with his past as an American who moved to the Great White North to avoid being drafted during the Vietnam War. His decision to tell all does not sit well with his friends and loved ones, however. Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, and current It guy Jacob Elordi co-star.

‘Parthenope’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

Greek-mythology scholars and fans of The Odyssey will be quick to point out that Parthenope is the name of a siren who attempted to sing Homer’s hero to his death, and ended up in a watery grave herself. The new film from Paolo Sorrentino ( The Great Beauty, The Hand of God ) features a character who shares this legendary figure’s name, but per the man himself , “is neither siren nor myth.” Instead, she’s something like a tour guide to Sorrentino’s love letter to the region that he grew up in, and one that will likely contain his signature mix of surreality, capital-R Romanticism, and his flair for gloriously over-the-top cinematic flourishes. You may love or hate the man’s work, but you’re never bored by it, and a new film from this major Italian filmmaker is always a big deal.

‘Rumours’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

From the moment that the first still from Guy Maddin’s new movie hit the internet — featuring two folks crouching next to a giant brain in some hallucinogenic forest — you could tell that this was going to be severely cracked even by the Canadian cult filmmaker’s standards. The logline of this dream-like fable (co-directed by Maddin’s longtime collaborators Evan and Galen Johnson, and produced by Ari Aster) is that a group of world leaders has gathered for the annual G7 summit. Then the night before a presentation, they all get lost in the woods, and … who knows what happens next. Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Charles Dance are among those stuck in this waking nightmare; if it’s even half as wonderful as My Winnipeg, we’re in for a treat.

‘The Shrouds’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

When David Cronenberg was promoting Crimes of the Future after its premiere at Cannes in 2022, he mentioned a project that he’d envisioned as a series for Netflix , before the streaming service passed on it. The Canadian director said that he hoped to turn it into a feature soon. The fear was that it would just become another what-if work left without a home or a patron saint, but the man made good on his word — and we now have another unsettling, dread-inducing thriller about a man (Vincent Cassel) who’s trying to franchise technologically advanced graveyards around the world. Then a mysterious event occurs at his flagship location, which sets off a chain of events that reverberates in a number of ways. Given how Cassel’s gray mane makes him a dead ringer for the director — and Cronenberg has talked about this was inspired by his grief over the death of his wife in 2017 — this sounds like one of his more personal films.

‘September Says’

will queens of the stone age tour australia

French-Greek actor Ariane Labed — you likely know her from her husband Yorgos Lanthimos’ films such as Dogtooth and The Lobster — makes her feature directorial debut with this story about two sisters, September (Pascale Kann) and July (Mia Tharia), who travel with their mother for a vacation in Ireland. Except the bond between those two siblings has been fraying of late, and going abroad together has more or less pushed their simmering tensions to a full boil.
