Pdtp 101 fundamentals of photography.

There are several fundamental concepts that form the basis of photography. These include exposure triangle, aperture, shutter speed, iso, focus, white balance etc.

To summarize, the curriculum is designed for the students to understand the fundamentals of Camera, Lighting languages, and Mastering Travel photography. Furthermore, they also learn travel Video Journalism, Digital Image Editing, Digital Marketing, and English language for communication Skills. Students here learn to use their equipment and camera in the most appropriate manner. Beyond settings in DSLR cameras, students learn to make maximum use of those settings in different conditions. They not only learn to operate their digital camera beyond the auto setting but also apply the apt settings in different scenarios. UNIT - I INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

The first unit covers photography, which is the art of capturing images with a camera, usually through a digital sensor or film. We teaches them the most important basics of photography, starting from scratch.

UNIT - II EXPOSURE - APERTURE, SHUTTER, ISO

You can set your camera to auto and take great pictures, but you still won’t know the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. What's important to remember is that to maintain the same exposure when changing one of these settings you must change another with an equal value.

UNIT - III Color Science & Color Management

There are two main aspects of color in photography to understand. One is ‘additive color’ and the other is ‘subtractive color’. Additive color theory is about things that emit light. Subtractive color theory is about light reflecting off things.

A photograph communicates a story through its visual language. Sometimes, the presence of a single image or a sequence is important to explain the things that happen.

The understanding of Visual language has much priority in Travel Photography. The classes in this module undergo various rules in photography that need to be applied in travel photography, landscape photography, nature photography, portrait photography, street, and documentary photography. In photography, aesthetics refers to the characteristics that immediately stand out from observer. These characteristics may include colors, light, compositions, lines, or your choices of subjects and how an observer feels looking at your photographs.

Visual communication is a form of communication that uses visuals rather than words to convey ideas or meanings.Visible language helps users understand visual images. Visual languages are applicable for any thing that has a visual representation to a mass communication.

UNIT - II Composition

Learning the techniques for taking better travel photographs by adding depth and form. How to add foregrounds, midgrounds, and backgrounds, and also add the elements and principles of composition.

UNIT - III Travel Photo Journalism

Travel photojournalism is a particular type of journalism that collects, edits, and presents travel news stories by creating images. Learn to make students travel and take photos so they can write major forms of photo journalism.

PY 1713 : LIGHTING LANGUAGE & COLOUR MANIPULATION

Pdwp 103 the foundation of lighting language.

The direction and softeness of the light can be manipulated to create different effects and emotions in a photograph.

This module of lighting helps the students understand the characteristics and physics of light. Travel Photography deals with natural light at the most. But, understanding artificial light is equally important. On a positive note, each of us needs to understand the light that is been recorded or captured in our images. Hence, here students understand the nature and characteristics of light, the natural light, types of artificial light, the direction of light. In addition, they study how the camera sees light, how to cope with difficult and low light conditions, and much more.

UNIT - I The Physics and Aesthetics of Light

Photography lighting is both physics and art. The right lighting makes people look better than they really are, while bad lighting makes them look worse than they really are.

UNIT - II The Language of Light

Light in photography refers how the light source, which could be natural or artificial, relates to your subject. Light affects everything from clarity to tone to emotions and so much more. It can even affect your final photos.

One of the most important takeaways for me through this course was the importance of post-processing a photo. ▶️ I attended Saurabh's Basics of Photography class. I had just purchased a DSLR and had little understanding of the nuances of photography with it Saurabh is a great teacher of photography. The class lasted about 7 hours and was informative to say the very least. There is a hands-on component to it as well, in the end. The slides and presentations are detailed and entertaining. What I liked most was that Saurabh would also help you in critiquing photos that you took so that you know where the flaws are and where could you have done better. Just a suggestion, I would love it if Saurabh could evaluate photos that participants took and explain how he could've done it better. He also went through some of his most popular photos and explained us the camera configs that resulted in them. In the end, I was left with some rules of thumb for general-purpose photography and had a much better understanding of my DSLR than before. The self-starter that I am, I preferred this method to an arduous reading of DIY Photography books. While I haven't gotten a chance to put them to use that much, I am hoping to change that. I might join for a refresher class, which is free-cost for someone who has already taken one before (thanks for this, Saurabh) and might join in for photowalks. Would highly recommend Saurabh's photography class to anyone who is new to it, please keep up the good work. Thanks. Sud K

▶️ Hello Photographers! Here I am sharing my experiences in SIA Photography. So first I want to say a bit about Saurabh Sir (trainer). Who created such a next level history in photography from past 2 decades and such a enthusiastic photographer I ever met and I think upto today's date he travelled more than 20 times from Kashmir to Kanyakumari to only share his travel photography experiences and knowledges with us. Also he own so many national level awards in photography. etc.... Basically i attended Lightroom course which is very helpful for me and the way he explained in-depth knowledge of Lightroom techniques i didnt even find in internet. from basic level to expert level he explained each n every part of Lightroom. Also I learned all photographic techniques like panning, light trials with practically implementations and also how to take photos in streets like all thease. So I am saying a big thanks to Saurabh sir who made me a camera owner to photographer. 😊 Ranjan Satpathy

▶️ The best thing about Sia photography workshop is theoretical knowledge (knowing the camera , technical details and functionality of each feature on it in detail with little hands-on in the classroom training) along with practical implementation of the gained knowledge in the scheduled photo walks every week. These are limit less, we can attend any no. of walks as we can , till we get perfection. That's about workshop which is worth the every penny you spend.

Now about trainers, Saurabh is an excellent teacher with simple teaching style, yet assured immense knowledge gain for novices as well.

▶️ As a practising surgeon,when I decided to learn photography, I was wondering where to join . After all learning photography was supposed to be a costly affair & cumbersome at the same time. But having invested in a Canon DSLR I had to take the plunge.I searched online & came across SIA Photography, dialled the number, came across Saurabh Chaterjee & the rest is history, for me, which changed my life. Beginner: master your camera packages of courses.

We cover basic photographic techniques, and immediately apply them through practical exercises. We discuss the decisions one must make while shooting. At the end of this course, you’ll be in control of your camera, and it will no longer make the decisions for you. You can begin to create the images that you’ve been wanting to. You’ll stop “taking” photos, because now you’ll have all the tools to “make” a photo.

How it works?

• A summary of the notions covered in this course will be handed out at the end of each session. A “meeting form” with the exact meet-up location will be sent to enrolled participants a few days before
• The workshops are composed of a theoretical part, practical training and a debriefing.
• To get the most out of the experience, please respect the chronological order of the 4 workshops (i.e. take course No 1 first and couse No 4 last).

Workshop in English

Course No 1: Camera settings (Beginner level)

Learning to use the manual mode of your reflex or bridge camera is an important step towards taking better pictures. Operating manuals provided with the camera are monotonous and do not really show all there is to know about the many buttons and parameters available.

Understanding the parameters of the camera and knowing digital photography vocabulary is the first key step. White balance, sensor sensitivity (ISO), RAW format and exposure correction are only examples of terms that will be presented in a clear and concise way during the course.

This workshop will teach you how to:

• Use the right image format between JPEG and RAW
• Adjust the white balance
• Correct the exposure
• Set the ISO on the camera
• Read a histogram
• Use the “P” shooting mode

At the end of the workshop, we will off a complete debriefing so you can share your images from the session. This collective review by the photography teacher will ensure that everyone has a good understanding of the workshop, as well as the chance to be inspired by other students' work.

Course No 2: Aperture and Depth of field (Beginner level)

Generally speaking, the camera lens, and the notions and adjustments that result from it, will be at the heart of this workshop:

• The notion of focal length, i.e. the angle of vision covered by a lens, will be discussed and applied during the practical phase of the workshop. You will learn the advantages and disadvantages of each category of focal length.
• You will learn how to easily manage the exposure of an image by adjusting the aperture. You will learn how to use the A/Av shooting mode.
• You will be able to manage your depth of field, i.e. the area of sharpness that extends in front of and behind the subject in focus (and therefore also the blurred area).

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to take portraits and landscape photos without distortion (linked to the choice of focal length), to put an artistic blur in your image, and to choose the sharpness area (linked to the choice of aperture).

Course No 3: Shutter speed and movement (Beginner level)

How can movement be captured in photography? Or, on the other hand, how can you freeze the action of a scene?

Managing the exposure time – or the shutter speed – of the camera is the answer to these two questions and is, just like the depth of field, a key parameter in photography. This parameter allows the light to hit the digital sensor for a defined amount of time, which will freeze or blur a movement.

In this case, you will have once again a wide array of creative possibilities: blur or freeze the action, get a panning (a moving subject is frozen in a blurry surrounding).

• Use the “S” and “Tv” shooting modes
• Make pannings of moving subjects
• Freeze the movement of a subject
• Use blur to suggest movement and bring dynamism to your pictures

Course No 4: Light and focus (Beginner level)

During this fourth and final workshop on camera technology, light management , focus , and the use of manual mode will be on the program!

Initially, the management and measurement of light will be discussed; you will learn how to use the different modes and settings to interpret and shape the light in an image.

Focus management will also be discussed. To achieve precise focus on a moving subject, or on an off-centre element, mastering the different autofocus modes and the selection of collimators are fundamental.

Finally, the manual shooting mode will be at the heart of the practical phase ; the aim will be to familiarise you with this non-automated mode, to make its use more obvious. Of course, the exercises proposed by your teacher will also focus on light measurement and the use of autofocus.

This course will teach you to:

• Measure light using the different modes (spot, matrix, centre-weighted)
• Take pictures with backlighting
• Focus using the different modes and choosing the right collimators
• Use the manual shooting mode without difficulty

  It is with mixed feelings that I announce the demise of what was Mumbai’s (India’s, actually!) Best Photography Workshop by far – “The Art Of Seeing” that I launched 9+ years back. I’m glad to say it was a success if ever there was one, going on to teach hundreds of participants who’ve since then realized the old truism, the one that goes that the most important gear in a photographer’s arsenal is the nut two inches behind the camera. I’m glad I played a role – albeit minor – in guiding them to a world where the ability to make a photograph had very little to do with the camera, and a hell of a lot to do with themselves.

The Art Of Seeing Workshop that I launched was literally a path-breaking one in India, given that all – and I mean ALL – photography workshops in India prior to mine focused solely on the technical issues of photography, totally ignoring the creative and artistic side of it. Since then, I’m glad to see that other players have begun to teach their version of The Art Of Seeing as part of their offerings. It’s satisfying to know I brought about a change in the way photography was viewed – or at least taught – in this country.

But all good things must come to an end, as does my Art Of Seeing.  I’m done with it. Only to replace it with something else. Something Better. Something Global, available Wherever You Are!

Good, you have less nonsense to unlearn. 

I really mean that. More often than not, people who are absolutely new to photography find it easier to pay attention to the world around them compared to those who – courtesy the workshops they’ve attended in the past – are fixated on the camera! 

Because let’s face it – those fixated on the camera have been led to believe that it’s the camera that’s important. And in doing so end up relegating their role in the picture making process as an extremely minor one.

What’s important is not the camera! What’s important is what’s around you – what you perceive, what you feel about it and how you want to express it via a photograph. 

Photography is nothing but self-expression, photography begins and ends with You!

O.K., so you’re already familiar with your camera and stuff like “Av”, “Tv”, “ISO”, blah blah. Let’s just quickly recount how you got there, and the questions that cropped up along your journey.

• Have you ever wondered just why your images don’t look as nice as you want them to?
• Ever wonder how those who consistently produce stunning images go about doing so?
• Did you purchase that great prosumer or professional DSLR / Mirrorless Camera, only to find that it doesn’t produce great photographs?
• Attended a workshop or two, where they taught you stuff like “Aperture Priority”, “Shutter Priority”, “Mamual Mode”, “Metering” blah blah. Stuff that maybe left you confused, or perhaps you mastered. But wait — that still didn’t result in you making better photographs?
• Let’s guess… you then went out and bought some additional lenses, didn’t you? Only to learn that didn’t help in you making better pictures, did it?
• So you then did some serious research. Joined some groups / forums. Maybe did a workshop. And then you were told you need to learn how to compose. So you poured over scores of articles on the net. Maybe even did some workshops. Watched videos.  Learned all about stuff like “The Rule Of  Thirds”, “Leading Lines”, blah blah blah. And then you went and religiously tried to implement all of that. Only to learn that… it bloody still didn’t help you make great photographs; all that you ended up doing was merely copying the compositions of others!

Does all this sound familiar? You’re nodding your head in agreement, aren’t you?

Do you know where the problem lies? What nobody’s told you? What you haven’t understood? Because there’s been nobody to help you address the very genesis of the problem?

Mastering exposure, metering, this-that-and-the-other mode, your camera and everything else  makes you a technician, not a photographer!

What you’ve  led to believe is that photography is all about the camera, about technique, and about light. It’s not! It’s never been about the camera, nor technique. And of what use is great light and your supposed mastery and ability to “control it” if you aren’t able to truly perceive what the light is illuminating in front of you?

The problem is that you’ve been attempting to see the world through the “eye of the camera”, while what’s really needed is the ability to see it through your eyes while engaging your mind and your heart.  

Photography is nothing but aligning your head, your eyes and your heart on the same axis – it is a Way Of Life!

He has set me free.

… barring a few years, the camera has been my continual accomplice for thirty-six years. And while my photographs have been technically well shot and good looking, my creative cravings have always wanted for more. To address this, I enrolled in several photography workshops & courses but always came back completely disappointed. Till finally, I attended the Art of Seeing Photography Workshop.

I came across this workshop on Facebook, visited the Stops Of Light site, where I spent almost a week looking at the images and carefully reading Neville’s thoughts on various aspects of photography. It was only after that that I decided to call him and enroll myself for the workshop.

I was very clear during my call. There I was telling Neville that I was looking for a workshop that DID NOT teach me to use my camera, but rather guided me through aspects of photography that no one bothers to teach. And then Neville goes “Oh sure! Don’t even bother bringing your camera…”

It has been some time that I completed this workshop and the vision that Neville has provided has completely transformed my way of seeing things and situations. Far exceeded my already high expectations!

Based on the reviews, I had very high expectations when I went to the workshop and I must say the experience was better than anything I could imagine and far exceeded my already high expectations. Neville’s thought process is amazing! He is a true genius and a storehouse of knowledge which he brings to what he teaches. His Art Of Seeing Photography Workshop guides you to do the same and how to see the beauty and make sense of all things around you – things that were always there but you dismissed as “ordinary” and never captured. No matter what kind – or level – of photographer you are, you will definitely gain from this experience.

Teaches you how to think!

In my opinion, one of the greatest ways in which any teacher can contribute to a student’s progress is by helping them understand how to think, and not simply teaching what one already knows. Neville’s Art of Seeing workshop is a classic case in point. More than talking about how to use a camera, it focuses on how to expand your point of view and your ability to think, so that you appreciate the beauty that lies all around you, and the moments that are occurring all the time. I strongly recommend his workshop for anyone interested in photography (or anyone actually, the lessons learned here go far beyond photography!) which will reorient your vision and approach towards the subject, and will cover the key ideas that help you see better, thereby removing the clutter that you will otherwise find in the field of photography.

Changed my perspective towards photography!

I came across this workshop a few years before finally deciding to attend it in May 2016, and I regret having deferred attending it for so long! I Initially I had an apprehension that the workshop might just limit my vision to see and photograph in some and certain ways, but trust me, it really opens up your mind and eyes to a great extent. My takeaway from the workshop is that there is much greater and deeper connect that one needs to bring into his or her Photography than one can imagine. This workshop in no ways will limit your vision but will help open it and move away from what Neville calls it as “me cramp”. This photography workshop certainly has changed my perspective towards photography.

A Must-Attend Workshop!

It’s an amazing workshop. Neville breaks down the principles of seeing and image making so well. I am a wedding photographer, and when I attended his workshop back in 2014, I was at a point where I was going through a photographic block. I knew I wanted to make a certain type of image but couldn’t figure out how. Neville’s Art of Seeing workshop answered those HOWs. The best part about him is that the mentoring process goes on after the workshop too if need be. He answered many of my questions and queries and helped and guided me through that creative block period even after the workshop. And his members only photo-walks are a must attend. It’s teachings applied in real life. :) Overall, it’s a must attend workshop.

A truly eye-opening session!

It was truly an eye-opening session with Neville. One can keep holding a camera and not see anything through the viewfinder unless one acquires the ability to “see”. Neville got me to see things through a photographer’s vision, mindset, and perspective. I don’t think anybody can explain what Composition really is and simplify it the way Neville did! Thanks, Neville!!!

He actually teaches you how to see photographically!

Neville taught me to observe –  to carefully view a scene and to bring out the best of it through my pictures. In a few hours he taught me the importance of the elements that are required to make a great picture.. he actually teaches the ‘art of seeing’ … I have been pursuing photography for years now, and people often compliment me saying my pictures tell a story. I owe each frame to my Guru – Neville Bulsara.

An incredibly enlightening and inspiring workshop

I did this photography workshop and can’t recommend it enough. More than what I learned to see, I couldn’t believe what I had been missing out on seeing! It’s just amazing what I can do once I actually start “seeing” and stop thinking about the camera…So many shapes, colors, patterns, forms, contrasts and moments to capture. It was pure delight. Shoot like a pro after this course! I always could say, this is a good photo, this is not. But I could never say why. After the course, I learned what are the elements of a good photo and my photography improved dramatically. And the best part is, you leave your camera behind when you go for the course! That’s when you learn where the magic is: in your eyes and mind – and not in the camera!! Highly recommended!
