Southwest doesn’t charge cancellation fees for the air portion of a vacation package. But hotel, rental car or excursion modification or cancellation fees are subject to supplier penalties, which means there's always a risk of fees for these items if you make changes after booking.

One way to avoid this is to purchase Southwest Vacations Travel Protection — a type of travel insurance that is an optional add-on available for purchase before completing your transaction. This protection provides a full refund of your vacation package; you’ll be eligible for an air credit for the flight portions of the package and a refund to the original form of payment for other elements in the package.

Southwest started as a budget airline but has blossomed into a solid choice for both domestic and Caribbean travel. They offer a great frequent flyer program, a generous flight change and cancellation policy  — and they don’t charge fees for checked luggage!

In addition, Southwest offers vacation packages. These package deals consist of a hotel and flight plus extras like rental cars and activities. Let’s take a look at what they offer and explore whether these vacation packages are a good deal.

Southwest Vacations offers package deals that include both a hotel stay and flight. You can add extras to your package including rental car, airport transfers, insurance, and even activities in your destination city.

There are 2 ways to access Southwest Vacations.

First, you can go to the Southwest website and click on Flight|Hotel|Car|Vacations in the main menu. Then click on Vacations .

You can also visit SouthwestVacations.com. The search interface in these 2 different methods will be a little different, but you will get to the same results page either way.

How to Book a Southwest Vacation Package

Image Credit: Southwest Vacations.This will take you to the search results page for hotels in your selected city. The filtering options are located to the left. You can filter by:

• Hotel amenities (including fitness facilities, pool, free breakfast, spa services, and more)
• Experience (adults only, beach, family, golfing, etc.)
• Distance from points of interest

Hot Tip: Southwest flies to many international destinations, so you might be surprised at the locations you can access through Southwest Vacations! For more information, check out all of these International destinations that Southwest flies to  for some vacation inspiration.

Sort the results list alphabetically, by price, or by top picks using the drop-down box at the top.

There is a map view you can access at the top left side of the screen. Click on View these hotels on a map to see the map. (In theory…I could never actually get this map to pop up!)

Each listing also has a map button you can click to see that particular hotel on a map view.

The prices listed are per person and include hotel, flight, and taxes . You might also notice a per month price — this is referring to Southwest Vacation’s pay over time plan called UpLift (more information on this below).

From here you will be able to select your room type. Any additional charge for a room upgrade will be visible at the right side of your screen.

Choose Keep to stay with your current selection, or Select to choose a new room.

Any promotions available for each room type will be listed in the center of the list. These can be slightly deceiving — when I clicked on the promotion labeled Save up to 65% , I got a message that this was already reflected in the price .

And the promotion called Unlimited Luxury Inclusions included things the hotel offers to everyone, like daily maid service and “no wristbands required.”

If you need to make a change to your hotel selection at any time in the process, you can click Modify Hotel at the top of the page.

Next you will be prompted to choose a flight. You will see your hotel selection at the top of the page, with your flight options listed below. Filter your results with options at the left and sort using the drop down box at the top.

Your current flight selection will be marked in green, and some flight options may have higher prices.

The price will be clearly listed to the right, but the higher priced options aren’t labeled as such — so you need to pay attention to your original price quote!

All price quotes will include the least expensive Wanna Get Away fares , but you can switch to Wanna Get Away plus, Anytime, or Business Select fares if you want.

Click on view flight details to see flight numbers and times, then click Select to continue. Repeat the process to choose your return flight.

Hot Tip: You will still be able to earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points on the flight portion of your Southwest Vacations package!

Next you will be able to review your hotel and flight choices, plus add extras like airport transfers, travel insurance, rental cars, and things to do .

Your vacation package price will now be listed in total for all people including taxes and fees (on previous pages, it’s listed per person).

To add a rental car to your vacation package, click Cars at the top of your screen.

Available options will be listed in the middle of your screen with filtering options to the left. The price listed is the total price for the rental car (per day price will be listed right underneath).

After choosing your car, click Select to continue.

You may see a note that states, “ Personal Liability Insurance is mandatory unless renter’s credit card has Personal Liability Insurance coverage. ”

Hot Tip: There is not an option to add extra car rental coverage through Southwest Vacations, so it’s best to use a credit card that offers great car rental coverage .

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Airport transfers do not have a separate tab on the main menu, but you can find these options a couple of ways.

First, they can be found by scrolling down on the review page after making a car, flight, or hotel selection. You can also find them under the Things To Do tab.

Click the yellow View options button to select the number of passengers and add the transfer to your vacation package.

Travel insurance can also be tricky to find. The options are listed after you make a car, flight, or hotel selection, or you can find them under the Things To Do tab.

For each type of coverage, you can click on More to get all the details about the policy. Click on View options to select the number of passengers and add it to your vacation package.

Whether or not you need insurance is an entirely separate discussion. While I personally have never purchased travel insurance , there are definitely some times when it can make sense.

One alternative to purchasing a separate travel insurance policy is to purchase your vacation package using a credit card that offers insurance . There are lots of credit cards out there that offer different levels and types of coverage, including:

• Offered by the Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card, Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card, and more!

To add activities to your Southwest Vacation package, click on Things to Do in the main menu. Scroll down and you will see a list of available activities.

Click on More to see all details about each activity, and click View options to select the number of people and to add the activity to your vacation package.

After you have made all of your selections, click Checkout in the main menu.

From here you will be able to scroll through all of your selections, modify any details, and see a breakdown of prices.

If you haven’t already, you can add a promotion code at the bottom of this page, right underneath the price breakdown. Click Continue to move on to finalize payment and traveler information.

Lowest Price Promise

Southwest Vacations offers a Lowest Price Promise on their packages, but it only applies to a price change on the SouthwestVacations.com website — not to a similar package offered by a different company.

If you find an identical package on SouthwestVacations.com , you are eligible to receive the difference in price in the form of a travel credit code good for future travel.

To qualify, the lower priced package needs to be identical in every way , including dates, flight numbers, fare type, hotel room category, car rental company and class, and any activities included in the reservation.

If you find an identical package and want to submit a claim, call customer care at 800-243-8372 at least 1 day prior to your departure date.

If you are issued a travel credit code from a Lowest Price Promise claim, it will be emailed to the primary contact on the reservation within 7-10 business days.

Unfortunately, it is pretty restrictive. It’s only valid for the same travel party as the original trip when traveling together on a future vacation package.

So, life got crazy and now you have to cancel or change your Southwest Vacation package ? Here’s what you need to know.

While Southwest Vacations technically does not charge any cancellation or change fees, any package that is canceled or modified is subject to supplier fees up to 100% of your purchase price.

So, any time you cancel or change a Southwest Vacation package, you could be on the hook for the entire price !

If your package includes a flight, that portion of the package is non-refundable, but it can be exchanged. You will be able to use that money toward another flight on Southwest Airlines.

Any cancellations must be made prior to departure. If you are within 24 hours of your trip, call 1-800-775-7105 to cancel .

Refund requests must be made in writing within 90 days of the scheduled departure date. Email your refund request to [email protected] .

No refunds will be given for the following:

• Unused or missed flights, hotel days, or rental car days
• Unused, missed, or canceled lift tickets, show tickets, or theme park passes

Bottom Line: Southwest Vacations does not charge any cancellation or change fees, but you are subject to supplier penalty fees that may be up to 100% of your purchase price!

UpLift is a service that breaks down your payments into 12 monthly installments . To take advantage of this payment option, select UpLift Pay Monthly during the checkout process.

Before you get too excited, make sure you know what you are getting into. This is a loan service that charges fees, so you will end up paying more in the long run.

Plus, you won’t be earning any valuable points by paying for your vacation with a great credit card!

To qualify for UpLift, you must be at least 18 and provide a valid U.S. address, phone number, full name, email address, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your social security number.

Hot Tip: Before you are approved for UpLift, there will be a soft pull on your credit report, but it won’t effect your credit score .

Paying through UpLift will come with a minimum 4.99% interest rate and a 2% origination fee . If you miss a payment, you will be charged a $15 late fee and will get a negative hit on your credit report .

The Vacations Plus package costs $179.99 and is available at 3 partner resorts: El Dorado Spa Resorts & Hotels, select Hard Rock Hotels, and Royalton Luxury Resorts.

5,000 Rapid Rewards points are worth about $75-$85. Depending on the cost of ground transportation and whether you can get a room upgrade, this package could be an OK deal.

However, much of the value of Vacations Plus comes from the potential room upgrade. Since this isn’t guaranteed, this package has the potential to be a waste of money.

If you do find that the Vacations Plus package is a good deal for you, you can add it from the Things To Do tab after choosing a participating hotel.

Are Southwest Vacations a Good Deal?

Now that you know what Southwest Vacations are, how they work, and how to book one, let’s look at one of the most important factors in the equation — will a Southwest Vacation package save you money ?

I priced out a couple different packages including a hotel stay, flights, and rental car. Here is what I found.

The first package was for a weeklong stay in Cancun at the Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas plus Southwest flights for 2 and a Budget rental car.

As you can see, booking this Southwest Vacations package that includes a hotel, rental car, and flights for 2 people saves $203.97 .

The rental car cost $70 through Southwest Vacations, but only $62.54 through Budget. So you could save an additional $7.46 by booking the rental car directly through Budget instead of adding it to the package.

The next package I priced out was for a chain hotel. These types of hotels (including Marriott and Hyatt properties) often offer lower prices to their members, so I wanted to see how Southwest Vacations stacked up to those prices.

Hot Tip: One thing to remember if you book a hotel as part of a vacation package is that you will likely not earn any hotel loyalty points, and any elite status you have might not be recognized .

This package was for a weeklong stay at the Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Beach plus flights and a Dollar rental car for 2 people.

In this instance, the package including hotel, flights, and rental car costs $241.61 more than booking everything separately .

There are 2 reasons why the package is so much more than booking everything separately.

First, the separate booking includes Marriott member pricing. It’s free to join Marriott Bonvoy , so this is a price that really is accessible to everyone.

Second, booking the rental car with the package costs $222 — but booking the same car through Dollar costs $166.22.

As you can see, you can save money with Southwest Vacations, but not always. In both of these examples, the rental car was more expensive through Southwest Vacations, so it’s probably best to book those separately .

Also, anytime you’re looking at a chain hotel that has a loyalty program, you will probably get better pricing booking directly.

As with anything, I would suggest pricing out your specific package separately before purchasing to ensure you are getting a good deal.

Bottom Line: Booking a Southwest Vacation package can save you money — sometimes! Rental cars tend to be cheaper when booked separately. Also, if your package includes a chain hotel that offers a rewards program like Marriott , Hilton , or Hyatt , it’s usually best to book directly. You will be able to take advantage of lower members-only pricing and earn hotel loyalty points.

Southwest Vacations offers deals on travel packages that can include hotels, Southwest flights , rental cars, insurance, airport transfers, and activities. While these packages don’t always save you money, sometimes they do offer lower pricing versus booking separately.

Before booking a Southwest Vacation package , take into consideration their rigid change and cancellation policy. Sometimes, it might be worth spending a little extra to be able to cancel or change your reservation without penalty.

Since these packages don’t always offer the best deal, it’s smart to price out everything individually before purchasing a package to make sure you are getting a good deal.

Southwest Vacations always have inexpensive vacation packages, which are easily found under the “DEALS” tab on southwestvacations.com . All of Southwest Vacations’ current deals are listed, and it is easy to find a cheap vacation package here. Southwest Vacations’ deals are sorted by destination city, so just scroll down and find what looks fun to you. Remember that even if the “departure city” is not yours, you can still click on the deal and then choose your nearest departure city. Quite often, that destination will still be reduced in price.

Southwest Vacations hotel descriptions and ratings are sparse. The good news is that this information is easily found online elsewhere. We recommend that you read hotel reviews and ratings on another site prior to booking, such as Expedia , to make sure the hotel is not a dump! Be advised that you cannot book a “ flight only ” on the Southwest Vacations site, unless you include a rental car. I booked a place through Southwest Vacations called in advance to find out if their were any “additional” fees and confirm the address of where I would be staying. Planned my whole vacation around the property at which I was told I would be staying. Even confirmed the day before and gave them my flight arrival time. So I arrived at the property and the only person there was a guard at the gate with no idea where I needed to go or what I needed to do. With two kids in the car and an hour on of phone calls I’m directed to a lock box across town. Then I find out I need to keep driving out of town for the property at which I will be staying.

Then my vacation gets interesting. I was in town because my wife was competing in ironman FL. After waiting for her to finish 3 hours past my kids bedtime I make it back to the property with my youngest asleep and cold in my arms to find the door the pad locked. After another hour and a half on the phone the property manager finally called me back and said there was nothing she could do because I did not pay some $40 fee and she would be by around 10 or 11 AM. I politely told her she would need to explain that to policeman who was standing there with me (I had called them after the first 20 min. told by the answering service that they would try to locate someone) because my belongings were inside and I was holding a receipt saying “paid in full” and we were about to break the door down. Fortunately the 2nd officer found an open window I got my belongings and a hotel room in town. After a year and several days on the phone with southwest vacations they still refuse to even reimburse me the hotel expense.

Southwest Vacations has no idea what customer service is. I booked a trip through MGM Resorts Vacations, believing they were part of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It ended up being Southwest Vacations I booked through. I purchased a trip for 5 adults, my wife, daughter, son-in-law, son and me. I even purchased the cancellation insurance, but when I tried to cancel the trip for just my wife, and no longer needed 3 rooms, I could not cancel the third room (2 days in advance)because it was associated with my son’s name. My only options were to keep all three rooms, just “request” a refund for my wife’s plane ticket, or cancel the trip for everyone. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was informed that they are all supervisors (not sure who they supervise if that is the case). I contacted the hotel directly, and they informed me that since I booked through a third party, they could not help me either. This was to be a big event, my son’s 21st birthday, and now it has turned into a very frustrating endeavor. If you book through Southwest Vacations, read the terms and conditions carefully on their website, you can only get to it by booking a trip, can’t get back to it unless you book another trip (or at least go through the steps and act like it). They will not get any return business from me.

I hope you issued a chargeback through your bank- then you can get your money back!

I don’t see what is so bad about Southwest Vacations. We did a vacation flying into FLL, and had no issues.

Terrible, terrible, and terrible!!! I purchased a “vacation package” from southwest vacations. The day before I was to depart from the airport I decided to check in online and when I tried it rejected my confermation number.. So I called southwest and they stated that the Plane tickets are mail to your address.. Btw I thought everything was ticketless in 2011!!! So my tickets were lost in the mail, then I called and asked for a replacement ticket and the manager saidto me that they cannot do that and I had to pay for another ticket!!! I was very frustrated and asked to speak to someone higher the her and she rudely said no and that she will not transfer me to no one else!!! So I ended losing $1,500. Essentially I paid for something I never recieved!!! Southwest airlines is a joke… I will never ever ever buy from southwest vacations as long as I live and I will let every one of my friends know about this SCAM called SOUTHWEST VACATION!!!!

Southwest Vacations is absolutely one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. They send the tickets via us mail we did not recieve our tickets three weeks later and they say that we can buy another set and should those get returned they will refund them. If not we are out the money. Sorry this is the policy and no we cannot prove that we sent the tickets…

Forget about making the customer happy with Southwest Vacations. I never received my tickets in the mail and the “Customer Service” would not do anything to fix it. Even though the tickets were paid for, the said they could do nothing to help me. I had to buy new plane tickets the day before. NEVER BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!! I travel quite often and this is the worst experience I have ever had. I will never use them again, no matter how good the deal it, not worth the headache.

Watch out! Southwest Airlines incorporates Southwest Airlines Vacations into their website as if they are part of Southwest Airlines, but they are NOT. Southwest Airlines Vacations is really the Mark Travel Corporation. You will find the Mark Travel Corporation name sprinkled sparingly and somewhat discretely on the Southwest Airlines Vacations website. If you’re not looking for it, you won’t even notice it. I didn’t, to my misfortune. However it’s very important to know, because Travel Mark Corporation/Southwest Airlines Vacations has set all its own rules… archaic and unreasonable, as another commenter pointed out. They are unbending. My advice from personal experience …stay away.

Don’t even try to make any changes after you book a Southwest vacation. We wanted to see if we could upgrade our hotel room. The hotel said we had to do it through Southwest. Southwest said they couldn’t do it b/c it was less than a week before our vacation. How ridiculous! We would have been better off booking everything separately. I don’t believe we saved any $$ at all booking through Soutwest vacations either.

I feel your pain. I just called to change a vacation I had booked, not minding to pay the extra fees in order to get the dates which worked toward my convenience only to have an incompetent, rude employee misinform me of the policy (which I was under the impression I had to pay just the difference, not have to pay for the new trip IN FULL, to have to await a refund) – Southwest called me back and apologized for giving me misinformation and I was on hold for over an hour and a half. I’m pretty livid and plan on never booking a vacation through them ever again nor will I probably ever book a flight through them either.

We feel your pain JP. They indeed do try to make traveling with them as difficult as possible. Not even addressing their archaic check in policies, upon trying to buy an early check in pass, we were told we were not allowed to since we purchased a vacation package. This means because we booked in advance and basically thought we were doing something we assumed would result in a stress free vacation, we are being penalized by Southwest. Their claim to be customer service friendly is joke. There’s no friendliness if you have an issue with them. I, too, will think twice about buying a so called Vacation Package from Southwest, and will certainly not be in a big hurry to fly with them.

I wanted to share my recent experience with Southwest Vacations. The hotels are a great deal- the flights are a different story. We purchased a round trip flight to Vegas, and only after we received confirmation, did they tell us that that flight had a lay over. When we called to change our flight, they told us we could not change or cancel the reservation- no exceptions. Upon further discussions, I learned that I would be snail mailed our airplane tickets- I specifically asked if these would be coming via Fed Ex and need a signature, as I, like most of the world, work all day. They told me “no- it will come via US Mail.” So what happens a few days later, but I get a Fed Ex ticket on my door- saying they cant leave the package without a signature- great. So, I call Southwest Vacation packages, again and ask if there is anyway I can change the Ship to address or have the tickets delivered electronically- I am told NO and NO. Wow… could they make this any more difficult? So, I end nup having to go to Fed Ex, and pick up the tickets myself. Ok- fast forward to day of the travel- I go to check in online- and receive a “fake” boarding pass that tells me I cannot use this to get on the plane, but only to get through security. On the day of my trip, I take the “boarding pass” to security, and am told they cannot let me through with the document, and have to call over their manager. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. I honestly don’t think that they could have made flying on Southwest any more difficult. Next time, I will skip the vacation package, spend the extra $100, and have a stress free travel experience. I would suggest you do the same

Starting today, May 1, Customers can visit Southwest.com each Wednesday to take advantage of the airline's low fares for their next getaway.

Southwest now offers last-minute travel deals every Wednesday

T AMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Southwest is helping travelers in need of a spontaneous trip get to their destinations with the airline’s new last-minute travel deal.

Starting May 1, the airline said customers can visit Southwest.com each Wednesday to take advantage of the airline’s low fares with the new “Wanna Go Wednesdays” deal.

“Customers have a whole new reason to look forward to the weekdays. Wanna Go Wednesdays is a new weekly program that allows Customers to book the latest low fares on routes that are still available for last-minute bookings,” said Jennifer Bridie, Vice President Marketing Communications & Strategy at Southwest Airlines. “We think this is a great way to highlight some spontaneous travel destinations at low fares for our Customers.”

Some of the fares will be as low as $60 for one-way trips.

Here are some sample fares and routes customers could see on Wednesdays, according to Southwest:

• As low as $69 one-way nonstop between Las Vegas and Long Beach, Calif.
• As low as $89 one-way nonstop between Denver and Phoenix
• As low as $89 one-way nonstop between Dallas (Love Field) and New Orleans,
• As low as $109 one-way nonstop between Baltimore/Washington (BWI) and Detroit
• As low as $109 one-way nonstop between Atlanta and Orlando

Southwest Will Now Have Discounted Flights Every Wednesday — What to Know

Travelers can visit the airline's website on Wednesday mornings to see the new inventory of discounted fares.

Wednesday may now be the cheapest day to book flights on Southwest. This week the airline introduced a new promotion, “Wanna Go Wednesdays” , which provides weekly discounted fares between popular markets.  For example, sample fares from the program’s launch this past Wednesday included discounts of $69 one-way fares between Las Vegas and Long Beach, California, and $89 one-way fares between Denver and Phoenix.  The promotion also recently featured discount fares of $109 between Dallas’ Love Field and New Orleans, as well as between Atlanta and Orlando.  Southwest described the promotion as a way to make Wednesdays “a little more fun” and helpful for passengers looking to score a last-minute deal.  “Customers have a whole new reason to look forward to the weekdays. We think this is a great way to highlight some spontaneous travel destinations at low fares for our Customers,” Southwest Airlines said in a blog post promoting the launch.   In order to find the fares, travelers can visit Southwest.com on Wednesday mornings to see the new inventory of discounted fares.

There has long been a debate on if there is a cheapest day of the week to purchase airline tickets. A recent industry report shared that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are some of the cheaper days to purchase tickets, but the savings may be marginal.  For passengers with definitive plans and those who can't wait until Wednesday, Southwest Airlines recently opened up the availability to book flights through March 5, 2025. This expansion of flights may be helpful for travelers looking to plan holiday season, or New Year's travel plans between 2024 and 2025.  The airline also recently hinted that overnight, or "red-eye", flights will soon be introduced to the schedule, including from Las Vegas and Hawaii.
