ATLANTA – Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer James Taylor and his All-Star Band today announced additional tour dates this summer, which features a stop at the award-winning State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Friday, June 16. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10.

James Taylor’s music embodies the art of songwriting in its most personal and universal forms. He is a master at describing specific, even autobiographical situations, in a way that resonates with people everywhere. In 1971, Taylor was on the cover of Time magazine, heralded as the harbinger of the singer-songwriter era. Five decades later, his warm baritone, introspective lyrics and unique style of guitar playing still blaze a path to which young musicians aspire.

Taylor has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1968. He has won multiple GRAMMY® Awards, has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the prestigious Songwriters Halls of Fame and was honored by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences as a MUSICARES Person of the Year.

In a career marked by artistic triumphs, the past several years for Taylor have been notable for both creative virtuosity and recognition of exceptional achievement. In 2011, Taylor was honored with a Carnegie Hall Perspectives series, which consisted of four concert evenings presented by Carnegie Hall and featuring Taylor and personally selected musical guests. In 2011 he was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama and, in 2012, he was awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. Both medals are their Nation’s highest honors for artistic excellence recognizing “outstanding achievements and support of the arts.”  In 2015 Taylor was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation’s highest civilian honor and in 2016 he received the Kennedy Center Honors, which are presented annually to individuals who have enriched American culture by distinguished achievement in the performing arts.

In 2015, Taylor released Before This World , which earned him his first-ever #1 album on the Billboard Charts and was nominated for a GRAMMY® for Best Pop Vocal Album. In early 2020 Taylor released his audio-only Audible Original titled Break Shot , a deeply personal and authentic memoir detailing his first 21 years. He also released his newest album, American Standard , his 19th studio album, which earned Taylor the 2021 GRAMMY® Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and gave him the honor of being the first artist to have a Billboard Top 10 album in each of the past six decades.

James Taylor Brings Signature Soothing Sound to State Farm Arena in Atlanta – Photo Recap

Photos by Ryan Swerdlin

James Taylor is an American songwriting icon, and has been a summer tour mainstay for decades. He has performed many summers at the iconic Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, but it was a nice reprieve for him to choose the air-conditioned and sheltered from the pesky summer storms, State Farm Arena . The show featured many of his staples over two sets and an encore.

“Something in the Way She Moves”, “Mexico”, “Secret o’ Life”, “Steamroller Blues” were all well-received by the crowd, and his band was in top-form. Taylor’s voice has a way to sooth and settle listeners down, amongst the crazy chaos for the world. As he has said, “the secret o’ life is enjoying the passing of time…” No better words to sum up the feeling of listening to JT on an acoustic, fully present and in the moment, sheltered and away from the chaos for just a few hours.

Be sure to catch this songwriting legend on tour this summer.

Shop the best of James Taylor’s discography on vinyl and more.

The run kicks off in May in Woodinville, WA, and wraps up on July 1 in Philadelphia in support of his latest release, American Standard (2020).

‘hey girl’: the small faces think big with their first self-written hit.

The summer trek is different than the Las Vegas residency Taylor and his band already announced for June 2023 at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. That announcement arrived in January. The five-night, exclusive engagement will take over Sin City on June 3, 4, 7, 9, and 10.

In December,   Taylor shared a video of a 2018 performance of a lesser-known gem in his peerless songbook. “Nothing Like A Hundred Miles,” featured on his gold-certified 1976 album In The Pocket , comes from his show with his band on June 3 that year at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA.

The show came during Taylor’s North American summer tour of 2018, which came ahead of July dates in the UK and Europe including his appearance on a stellar bill with Paul Simon and Bonnie Raitt in London’s Hyde Park. Raitt had been scheduled to be the special guest on the first leg of the North American run, but had to miss the start due to an unexpected medical situation that required immediate attention. She joined the tour later that June, after Sheryl Crow had guested at three shows including the two at the Hollywood Bowl that immediately preceded the Sacramento concert.

Singer James Taylor gives it his all onstage.

We’ve seen fire and we’ve seen rain, but we’re happiest to see James Taylor on the road in 2023.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is taking off on a 33-concert tour to go along with a few previously scheduled tour dates, a Las Vegas residency and, of course, his annual Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, MA on July 3 and July 4 .

Plus, Taylor and his All Star Band be stopping into New York and New Jersey for huge gigs at Bethel, NY’s Bethel Wood Center For the Arts on June 29, Wantagh, NY’s Northwell Health at Jones Beach on Sept. 3 and Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Sept. 4.

Taylor’s upcoming tour comes on the heels of his sprawling 2022 jaunt across the globe — clearly, the 74-year-old soft rocker has quite a bit of gas left in the tank.

And if you want to secure tickets to hear “You’ve Got A Friend,” ‘Carolina In My Mind,” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” live this year, we’re happy to report that you can for cheap.

At the time of publication, we found some Taylor tickets going for as low as $18 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Not a bad price to see a legend live.

Want to know more about the tour before it launches?

We’ve got all the info you need and more below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

James Taylor 2023 tour schedule

The “Your Smiling Face” singer’s official 2023 tour will begin with back to back concerts at Woodinville, WA’s Chateau Ste Michelle on May 25 and May 26 .

From there, the legendary vocalist will take his talents to notable locales like Santa Barbara (May 31), Atlanta (June 16), Cincinnati (June 21), Milwaukee (June 24) and Philadelphia (July 1).

As noted earlier, Taylor’s tour comes to a close at Lenox, MA’s Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood on July 3 and July 4 .

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

James Taylor Las Vegas residency

Midway through the trek, Taylor and co. will stop into Las Vegas for five concerts at The Cosmopolitan from June 3 through June 10 as part of his “Exclusive Las Vegas Engagement.”

Can’t decide which show to go to?

No problem.

We’ve found the cheapest tickets available for each show below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

James Taylor new music

Taylor has stayed fresh over the past few years releasing a number of unique singles like a collaboration with 86-year-old Buddy Guy , a tribute to Leonard Cohen and two stand-alones: “There She Goes” and “Pop.”

His last full-length album, 2020’s “American Standard,” sees the crooner put his spin on classics like “My Blue Heaven,” “Moon River” and “Pennies From Heaven.”

You can hear the 14-track record in its entirety here .

James Taylor set list

While Taylor often plays the hits you know and love at his live shows, he’s known for mixing in a few off the beaten path covers as well.

If you want to see which Carole King, Dinah Washington and Marvin Gaye covers he peppers into his sets, we recommend checking out Set List FM for a complete picture of what he’s played at recent live shows.

Want to go back further?

You can see what Taylor played at his very first show in 1969 at Boston, MA’s Unicorn Coffee House here .

James Taylor talks koalas, the 'gravitational attraction' of touring and Taylor Swift

james taylor tour atlanta

It’s nearly midnight in Australia when James Taylor pops onto the screen , casual in a T-shirt and omnipresent baseball cap.

He’s in the midst of a tour of the country – which he’s visiting for the first time in seven years – and indulges immediate questions not about his legendary career, mellifluous songs, or his upcoming U.S. tour. It's about koalas.

A photo on his Instagram page showcased the soft-spoken Taylor cuddling a native marsupial and he was, indeed, smitten.

“They give off a very calm vibe,” Taylor says. “They’re lovely little critters, and they eat one food. One plant. That’s it. It’s very dialed down.”

Given the soothing tone of so many of Taylor’s staples – “Fire and Rain,” “Your Smiling Face,” “How Sweet It Is” and his signature rendition of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” – it’s not surprising he found a kindred spirit in a placid (this one, domesticated) koala.

Taylor and his All-Star Band will leave Oz for a summer run in America, starting May 29 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and traveling through cities including Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, Denver and Lenox, Massachusetts, for 50 th anniversary performances July 3-4 at Tanglewood.

The gregarious Taylor , 76, happily eschewed sleep to talk about the “gravitational attraction” of touring, what music he turns to for comfort and the “little scraps of music” that will likely morph into songs for his next album.

Question: When “American Standard” came out in 2020, you became the first act to have a Top 10 album in each of the last six decades and it won your sixth Grammy. Does it stun you when things like that happen at this stage of your career? Answer : Yeah, to me it feels like just continuing and carrying on. I feel as if I’m always in the process of learning how to do this, how to make records, how to tour and how to best do this kind of work and live this kind of life. The unusual thing is it’s been so consistent. Partially when something works, you don’t tend to change it. My evolution has been slow and steady.

On that album, you tackled songs from the American standards canon. Is there another period of music that you would like to do? I keep recorded notes, little scraps of music and ideas and when I get into a pre-writing phase, I’ll start pushing those around. And I’m due for one of those sessions. I’d like to think there is another batch of songs in there. And of course, it used to be that musicians like me, composers like me, would write in batches of 10 or 12 songs and that would make up an album. But now it’s altogether possible to work up five or six songs and let that be it. It’s funny – it used to be that a record deal was necessary to have a career and you used to do all you could to get in the door. Now it’s easy to get in the door, but once you walk through, there are a million people in the room.

I think most people would say they find comfort in your music. What or who do you listen to for comfort? My comfort music is still Brazilian music. I love choral music and since I met (wife) Kim, I’ve had a renewed exposure to classical music and that was an eye-opener for me too. I still have my old favorites that I still love to pieces, Ray Charles is still my favorite, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin , Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt. I love salsa and Eddie Palmieri and the Cuban musician Arsenio Rodríguez. I’m still very connected with the musicians who influence me. I happened across a great record the other day by The Coasters – “Shopping for Clothes.” It’s fantastic.

With this tour coming up, do you have to psych yourself up to go on the road or is it just part of your DNA? I think both. It’s familiar. I feel the gravitational attraction of a tour and feel it grab hold. As I approach it, there is some anxiety and you need to prepare yourself physically and emotionally for it. I work on my voice for about a month ahead of time. I’ll pick up my guitar and start playing every day and try to get my chops and technique back and then we start looking at the set and how we might want to change it from the last time we played that city.

Have you ever had a conversation with Taylor Swift about her being named after you?

Yeah, I met her perhaps it was 15-16 years ago. We did a benefit for (the Candie’s Foundation), an organization that tries to help with teenage pregnancy, and it was interesting. We were both just there with guitars and played a couple of songs. I was performing with my wife and may have had a friend of ours playing cello and Taylor was there just playing by herself. She was just a teen. She told me she had listened to my music a lot and that her folks had named her with me in mind.

More: Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant, even the 15 surprise songs

I know you had a documentary with Carole King a couple of years ago (“Just Call Out My Name”). But will we ever see a definitive James Taylor documentary? I did an autobiographical piece for Audible (“Break Shot: My First 21 Years”) a few years ago and it covers my experience up until getting signed with Apple and then moving on to Warner Bros. It’s just an audiobook, really. I sort of feel as if everything after that has been so public that there is nothing left to share.

Review: American legend James Taylor unfurls half century of soulful classics at Auckland's Spark Arena

About halfway through his first set at Auckland's packed-out Spark Arena, legendary American singer-songwriter James Taylor takes off his jacket and settles back onto his stool.

"That was exciting," he responds to the audience applause. "Later I might take out my teeth."

Grandad is holding court and it feels reassuring.

Taylor, 76, has been part of the popular music tapestry since the late 1960s, when he first performed in front of Beatles Paul McCartney and George Harrison, auditioning to join their new Apple recording label.

"I just heard his voice and his guitar, and I thought he was great," recalled McCartney in Taylor's biography Long Ago and Far Away . "And then he came and played live, so it was just, like, 'Wow, he's  great '."

Taylor still remembers that day and the song he played - 'Something In the Way She Moves' - is, fittingly, the opening number on his Asian and Pacific concert tour.

More from Newshub

"You think I was nervous playing it for you," he admits. "Imagine how nervous I was then."

Taylor sits on stage under a spotlight, no frills. No light show, no fireworks, no big screens... just one man, his guitar and a collection of songs honed lovingly over more than half a century.

And a smattering of grandad jokes.

"A dyslexic walks into a bra," he offers, amid groans.

Taylor would become the first non-British act signed to Apple and a close collaborator with the 'Fab Four'. Harrison would write his own version of Taylor's audition piece, he and McCartney would guest on 'Carolina in My Mind'.

Years later, as John Lennon's neighbour, Taylor had his own scary encounter with Lennon's assassin, Mark Chapman. Next day, he heard the fateful shots next door.

For the uninitiated, Taylor's first set at Spark can be hard going. Of the 10 songs, probably only Del Shannon cover 'Handy Man' is among his top charting singles - his highest charter in NZ - but every one of them seems to have a story.

'That's Why I'm Here' alludes to the death of actor and friend John Belushi ( Saturday Night Live , Blues Brothers , Animal House ) of a drug overdose, a tragedy that helped Taylor turn around his own struggles with addiction.

'Sweet Baby James' is a lullaby for a nephew named after him.

While the recognition of those songs may be missing, the focus is squarely on Taylor performing his craft with a voice that could make a squeaky door hinge sound beautiful, building his rapport with an appreciative audience.

With no support act, the night is entirely about him, but Gramps has the good grace to provide a 20-minute intermission for everyone to stretch their legs and regroup.

"I don't know why," he admits. "We just stand on the other side of the curtain, looking at our watches."

If the first hour never quite gets out of second gear, Taylor doesn't disappoint on the resumption, as he climbs into his big hits, beginning with 'Carolina in My Mind'. He even breaks out an electric guitar for 'Mexico'.

"When we played in Pennsylvania, the Amish community there still use horse-draw guitars."

'Steamroller' is a favourite and unashamedly bluesy, offering Taylor's All-Star Band a chance to show their chops with a series of solos, beginning with Taylor himself on the harmonica. Each musician or vocalist is introduced reverently with a respectful handshake or a warm hug.

The haunting 'Fire and Rain' is another reflection of his drug woes and the suicide of friend Suzanne Schnerr.

Many of Taylor's best-loved songs are actually covers that have become more recognised than the originals over the years. 'Up on the Roof' was written by Carole King for The Drifters, while 'You Got a Friend' was another King composition.

'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)' was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye, but was outcharted by Taylor's version a decade later. This is the last number of his second set at Spark Arena and finally gets the fans out of their seats.

Called back for an encore, Taylor performs 'Shed a Little Light' and 'Smiling Face', before holding up his finger for just one more, 'You Can Close Your Eyes'.

"Did that look spontaneous?" he quips. "We've been practicing our spontaneity."

Finally, it's time to climb down off grandad's knee, suitably enriched by his wisdom, his sincerity, his wry humour and his humility.

We can all use a dose of those wholesome traits in our lives.

James Taylor Embraces Being a Boomer: ‘It Was Such a Phenomenal Musical Generation’

Singer-songwriter acknowledges longtime fan base, celebrates 50 years of shows at his hometown venue.

Gayle Jo Carter,

Singer-songwriter James Taylor, 76, feels a special connection with his fans from the boomer generation. “We really did think we were changing the world,” he says. He also shares a special connection with a much younger musical superstar: Taylor Swift. James recounts that the two met more than a decade ago, and Swift revealed that she was named after him. He shares with AARP more about the musical legends he’s worked with, the advice Tony Bennett gave him and how he’s preparing for his summer tour, which kicks off May 29 at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

As you gear up for a tour, do you have to do anything to get into shape?

In getting sober [in 1983], I also found that in order to get my nervous system back, to get comfortable in my own skin again, I had to get really fit. I went into a kind of athletic mode for about 20 years, from the age of 35 to 55. And then my second family of kids was born [in 2001] — twins Rufus and Henry — and I started backing off the physical activity a little bit. But that sort of late push set me up really well. I just feel as though I’m physically up to it. There’s a little bit of use it or lose it. I remember Tony Bennett told me once, “You’ve got to do your vocal exercises every day. You have to do that. If you skip it for one day, you’ll feel it. If you skip it for two days, people in the band will begin to feel it. If you skip it for three days, people in the audience will begin to notice. And if you skip it for four days, the critics will notice it.”

So are you doing daily vocal exercises?

I do, especially in the two weeks leading up to rehearsals, I do a couple of hours every day of vocalizing and trying to bring it back up. And I start singing through the set list that we made for the summer. About a month out, I start working on it. … It’s important to have a couple of gigs placed here and there that will pull [the band] back together and just be stepping stones that’ll get us through that off period. At this point, it’s a very familiar process — getting ready to go out on the road — and you do learn to do it. In the beginning, it beats you up pretty bad, and you overbook yourself, but now we know what we’re doing a bit.

Your fans seem to feel very loyal and connected to you. Why do you think that is?

There’s something about the baby boom generation — I was born in ’48, so I’m pretty much in the middle of it. It was such a phenomenal musical generation when that big lump of population got to be about 20 years old, and it was using FM radio to define itself and communicate. And we really did think we were changing the world. And although we didn’t change it as much as we wanted, or as we thought, it was culturally a massive thing, the baby boom bulge. I still feel as though it’s sort of the dominant generation. It still feels like an entity to me.

Speaking of being a boomer, are you an AARP member?

I am. It was like 20 years ago, maybe even more, that I did my first interview with AARP. I love AARP. I love my community of older people. When the testosterone and the estrogen diminish, that’s when life gets good.

You’ve performed with incredible people over the years. Does anyone stand out?

There are a couple of people that tragically have moved on now. I’ve worked with Ray Charles. It was just a short while before he died, and it was a major ask to get him into the studio and to work. He invited me to be part of a duets album. We did a song of mine called “Sweet Potato Pie,” which I always wanted to hear him do. Aretha [Franklin] — “Shed A Little Light,” my song for Martin Luther King [Jr.] Day — that was exciting, too. I performed with Yo-Yo Ma and loved working with Yo-Yo, who’s a friend. Paul McCartney played bass on “Carolina in My Mind.” It was a thrill. I’ve had some really incredible opportunities. I’ve had an invitation to sing with Barbra Streisand on an album that she’s making, and we’re going to give that a try. I’ve worked with Vince Gill, although never recorded with him. I’ve recorded with Mark Knopfler. That was so wonderful. Of course, Joni [Mitchell]. I was basically the backing band on that album Blue . And of course, Carole [King]. I played on the same stage as Bob Dylan once. I never actually sang with him. It really goes on and on. Don Henley and Glenn Frey back in the day. Sheryl Crow and I worked together. Taylor Swift played Tanglewood [in Lenox, Mass.] with me one year. Every time I see Stevie [Wonder], he says, “We’ve got to get back together and write another song,” because he and I collaborated on a song called “Don't Be Sad ’Cause Your Sun Is Down.” And I really want to do that. He played harmonica on a song of mine called “Little More Time With You.” Anyway, I’ve worked with some really great people.

James Taylor and Taylor Swift sitting on couch playing guitar; microphone in front of each of them

Tell me more about Taylor Swift.

We did a benefit together in New York. And she introduced herself and explained to me that her folks had named her after me and that she had been listening to my music. That was flattering. She invited me to play with her at the close of her first really big tour at Madison Square Garden [in 2011], and she reciprocated by coming to Tanglewood [in 2012] and working with us.

You’ll celebrate 50 years of performing at Tanglewood this summer. Do you have any special memories of your first performance there?

I can’t remember [that night] specifically. They all do tend to blend together. I remember a couple of epic rainstorms that happened over the years there. We can’t take our usual stage setup in there because it’s a very minimal stage, and the acoustic baffling that they’ve put behind the orchestra makes it impossible for us to set up staging and our lights and stuff. It’s bare bones every year, but it’s still the center of my touring universe. It’s my hometown, it’s my home crowd, and the fact that we’ve made it a yearly event that happens on the Fourth of July — everything else falls into place around it.

Do you think about retiring and what that would look like for you?

Yeah, I do, sure. But it would really just feel like slowing down somewhat. I doubt I’ll ever completely walk away from music. Retiring, for me, would mean that I could no longer basically work at a pace that could support a band, and all of the 50 to 75 people that have to travel across the landscape and stay in hotels and take airplanes and rent buses and trucks — all of that. … It’s interesting about getting old. There’s some value to long experience. And for me, there’s amazing value at having a relationship with an audience that spans 50 years. I find myself wanting to basically go back to the same places each year, or every other year. And that’s how I think I’m going to be working in the future — establishing a circuit that I play every other year and have two alternating tours that I do. That’s how I want to focus on doing it as time goes by.

Is there anything you wish you could tell your younger self?

Well, I actually think now that I wouldn’t change anything. And that, in fact, everything leads to everything else. So you wouldn’t want to meddle with it. I would be too tempted to go back and say, “Don’t go away. Don’t leave North Carolina and go to boarding school in Boston, Massachusetts. That’s not gonna make you happy.” I definitely would have, if I could have, skipped a drug addiction. But I was lucky that it didn’t kill me, and recovery was such a gift. Maybe I’d go back and give myself some general and useless advice …. and I’d say, “Don’t listen to anyone who comes back from the future telling you what to do.”
