Scene from The Firm (2009)

N ick Love has made a name for himself with superladdish tales of violence and crime. Now he has remade Alan Clarke's 1989 TV drama The Firm, about the 1980s world of organised football hooliganism - well-off guys in good jobs who get weekend thrills by organising themselves into competing "firms", notionally attached to football teams and looking for a result outside the ground.

Love's films have, in the past, brought me out in a rash - but this one is watchable. It's well made; there's a persistent and welcome undercurrent of humour in the script that reminded me of Love's sparky debut, Goodbye Charlie Bright, and most importantly the ending is under dramatic control. The Firm is a reminder of Love's undoubted talent and technique.

The 7 best Tom Cruise action movies, ranked

Tom Cruise holds onto a cargo plane in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

Very few movie stars have been at the center of more well-regarded action movies than Tom Cruise . It’s not hard to see why, either. Over the course of his career, Cruise has developed an obsessive devotion to practical action sequences, the kind that make audiences gasp and cheer when they’re brought to life on the big screen. His desire to wow and thrill has resulted in him putting himself in some serious danger over the years. It’s also led to some of the greatest action movies ever made.

7. Minority Report (2002)

  • 6. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

5. Collateral (2004)

4. edge of tomorrow (2014).

  • 3. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)

2. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

  • 1. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)

With Cruise’s latest film, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , hitting theaters this week, now seems like as good a time as any to look back at his career and celebrate some of his biggest achievements. So, without any further ado, here are the seven best action movies that Tom Cruise has ever starred in. ( Dead Reckoning Part One notwithstanding.)

It may not be the first film that comes to viewers’ minds when they think about Tom Cruise’s storied action filmmaking career, but 2002’s Minority Report is almost as thrilling and viscerally intense as any other blockbuster he’s made. Based on a novella by Philip K. Dick, this Steven Spielberg -directed sci-fi effort is a paranoid, man-on-the-run conspiracy thriller that gives both Cruise and its director the chance to truly flex their muscles on-screen.

  • 10 best movies of 2024 so far, ranked
  • 7 best fight scenes in action movies, ranked
  • 7 great free action movies you should stream right now

Visually, the film features some of the best and most inventive chase sequences that either Cruise or Spielberg has been a part of, including one alleyway escape that manages to strike the perfect balance between goofy, terrifying, and thrilling. On top of all of that, it packs in more than a few terrifying messages about the dangers of governmental corruption and surveillance. Over 20 years after its release, it’s still one of the most underrated movies that both Cruise and Spielberg have ever made.

6. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation isn’t even the greatest action movie of its franchise, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an absolute thrill ride. Equal parts Hitchcockian thriller and Spielbergian blockbuster, Rogue Nation is about as entertaining and operatic as a mainstream action movie can get. It’s also, notably, the first Mission: Impossible film directed by longtime Cruise collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie.

From its show-stopping cargo plane prologue to its midpoint opera house assassination attempt, Rogue Nation is full of show-stopping action set pieces. Together, McQuarrie and Cruise use their shared cinematic obsessions to deliver a film that feels as much like a love letter to the Roger Moore-led Bond films of the 1970s as it does an ode to Golden Age Hollywood thrillers like Charade and North by Northwest . Throw in Rebecca Ferguson’s scene-stealing debut turn as fan-favorite MI6 agent Ilsa Faust and what you’ve got is the platonic ideal of a big-budget American action movie.

Collateral may not be quite as action-oriented as some of the other films on this list, but it’s just as intense and engrossing. Directed by Michael Mann , the film stars Tom Cruise as Vincent, a hitman who takes a taxi driver (Jamie Foxx) hostage for a night and forces him to help him carry out a series of cold-blooded assassinations. As Vincent, Cruise not only turns in a rare villain performance but also delivers some of the most quietly nuanced and impressive dramatic work of his career.

And there are Collateral ’s action sequences, which are sparser than you might expect, but nonetheless impactful and impeccably staged. The film’s second act pivots around a nightclub confrontation that is among the greatest shootouts that have ever been realized on-screen, and Cruise is at the center of Collateral ’s nerve-wracking last chase sequence, which ends with a final line of dialogue that’s truly for the ages. To put it simply: Action movies just don’t get any more atmospheric or thrilling than Collateral .

This Doug Liman-directed 2014 sleeper hit is a rare thing: A CGI-heavy sci-fi action movie that looks consistently good and is entertaining from start to finish. Put that another way: Despite following different rules than his more recent films, Edge of Tomorrow still meets the exacting quality level that Tom Cruise has become known for. The film’s action sequences are gritty, explosive, and tactile. Even more importantly, they’re firmly rooted in the respective arcs of both Cruise’s William Cage and Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski. Together, Cruise and Blunt are as good of an action duo as any other that Hollywood has offered throughout the past 10 years.

As Cage, a cowardly figurehead who only discovers his courage after literally dying countless times, Cruise is also as funny and heroic as he’s ever been on-screen. Consequently, while Edge of Tomorrow still isn’t quite as well known as some of the other films on this list, it’s just as crowd-pleasing, gripping, and endlessly rewatchable.

3. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)

If you were to try and trace Tom Cruise’s late-career renaissance back to one movie, it’d arguably be Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol . The fourth installment of a franchise that had previously been dormant for five years, Ghost Protocol really set the standard for most of the Tom Cruise-led action films that have followed it. Directed by longtime Pixar filmmaker Brad Bird, it’s a film that pays just as much homage to the Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd silent movies that Cruise loves as it does push the limits of what modern action movies do.

The film’s ensemble, which features Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner and one-time franchise scene-stealer Paula Patton, is one of the best of any Mission: Impossible movie to date. Its central Burj Khalifa set piece, in which Cruise’s Ethan Hunt literally scales, hangs onto, and runs around the side of the world’s tallest building, remains the greatest stunt in Mission: Impossible history, too. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the greatest stunts in movie history — period.

No list of Tom Cruise’s greatest hits could exclude this film and do so with a straight face. Top Gun: Maverick has been called a lot of things over the past year (Steven Spielberg himself even named it the movie that saved movies), but when you look past its important place in the history of modern moviegoing, you’re still left with a five-star Hollywood blockbuster that just gets everything right. It’s a sun-dappled shot of pure, unadulterated joy.

The film’s aerial flight sequences never fail to inspire awe and wonder, and they tie back to the emotions of their pilots so seamlessly that Maverick reminds you why summer blockbusters were invented in the first place. When people look back decades from now at Cruise’s career, don’t be surprised if the image that’s returned to most often is him riding his motorcycle at sunset in this film’s opening minutes. No movie has captured his star power or what makes Cruise such a special figure in cinema history as well as this 2022 hit.

1. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)

Top Gun: Maverick may end up being the most beloved and well-known movie of Tom Cruise’s career, but not even it manages to top the pure craftsmanship and adrenaline-pumping set pieces of Mission: Impossible — Fallout .

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film makes up for its inability to top Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol ’s skyscraper stunt by delivering a succession of some of the most intense, well-edited, and complicated action sequences you’ll ever see. From the film’s practical first-act HALO jump and untouchable Paris chase to its London-set footrace and climactic helicopter showdown, Fallout is overflowing with stunts, images, and action beats that are guaranteed to make your jaw drop.

Beyond its major, show-stopping stunts, though, Fallout also contains the best fistfight of any Mission: Impossible movie to date (see: the Henry Cavill-led bathroom brawl) and a final, cliffside confrontation that is as exhausting as it is awe-inspiring. This is a movie that, like George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road , puts its hand around your throat and refuses to let go until its final seconds. As far as mainstream action movies go, it’s unrivaled. No film makes Cruise’s willingness to put his own body on the line for our enjoyment as blatantly clear as Mission: Impossible — Fallout does.

The greatest gangster movies are also often the best in the wider crime genre, with each being a masterpiece that portrays its own unique gritty underworld full of flawed characters. Whether it's classic tales of organized crime that offer a peek behind the curtain or modern-day dramas that can move or shock audiences, these gangster films are important works that represent the best the genre can offer.

From the intense realism of City of God to the iconic brilliance of The Godfather, they may all depict criminals, but their stories are diverse and complex, offering varied entertainment value for every type of viewer. These cinematic thrills dive deep into the criminal underworld where violence, drama, and high-stakes situations are the norm. 7. City of God (2002)

If you grew up loving great action movies from the 1980s and 1990s, there's a good chance you've seen a fair number of Jean-Claude Van Damme movies. While he never quite managed to become the kind of A-lister that Schwarzenegger and Stallone were, JCVD was a major star through the early 1990s and has continued to make compelling action movies even up until today.

As we look back at his long career, we've identified seven of his very best movies that you should definitely check out. 7. The Expendables 2 (2012)

In 1989, Patrick Swayze introduced audiences to Dalton, the world's best cooler, in Road House. The story of an elite bouncer tasked with fixing up a rowdy Missouri bar became a signature action film of the 1980s. In 2024, Jake Gyllenhaal steps into Swayze's shoes for Amazon Prime Video's Road House, Doug Liman's reimagined version of the 1989 film. Instead of Missouri, Dalton heads to the Florida Keys to save a roadhouse from a local crime lord.

Road House debuted to a thunderous reception at SXSW and will likely be a hit on streaming. If you liked the new Road House, ride the action wave and watch these three movies, including another 1980s film with Swayze, a thriller set at sea, and a terrific legacy sequel. Red Dawn (1984)

How Tom Cruise Really Felt When He Joined Nicole Kidman In Eyes Wide Shut

Tom Cruise red background

It's one thing to be married to a fellow actor and shoot a movie together, but imagine working together for over a year on what was not only a legendary director's last film, but also a movie that explored the intricacies of keeping together a mundane marriage while withstanding outside temptation. This is what Tom Cruise and his then-wife Nicole Kidman went through while shooting Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."

Released in 1999, "Eyes Wide Shut" centers around Dr. William "Bill" Harford (Cruise) and his wife Alice (Kidman), a Manhattan-based married couple who have gotten so used to the routines of domestic life that the only way sexuality plays a role anymore is through the temptations of strangers and mystery. Things start to unravel as William finds himself seeking a new kind of pleasure as he ventures outside the city to a mansion hosting a masked party at which an underground sexual ritual is taking place.

While "Eyes Wide Shut" is notable for its unique storytelling and blatant erotica, its probably best known as Stanley Kubrick's last film, as the director died before the movie was released. It's also known as one of the most "exhausting" shoots for any cast and crew (via  Vanity Fair ). According to Vanity Fair, when "Eyes Wide Shut" began shooting in the fall of 1996, Cruise and Kidman "fully expected to return to Hollywood by spring." However, filming didn't finish until 1998. Cruise and Kidman wound up spending 15 months working on "Eyes Wide Shut," which earned the Guinness World Record for "the longest continual film shoot."

So, how did Cruise feel when Kidman joined the cast of the historic film?

Brutal honesty

Originally aiming to cast Steve Martin in the lead role in 1980, 15 years later,  Stanley Kubrick eventually landed on casting Tom Cruise, at the suggestion of his producer Terry Semel. According to the Independent , Cruise flew to England to meet Kubrick in 1995, and after some basic conversation about "vintage cameras, planes, the New York Yankees," the filmmaker asked Cruise to star in "Eyes Wide Shut." After accepting, Cruise suggested his real life wife at the time play his on-screen wife as well. Kubrick apparently loved the idea, as it "introduced a new layer of psychosexual subtext" to the movie.

The couple went through a grueling shoot with Kubrick, whose unique filmmaking methods began affecting Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage. Kubrick decided he would psychoanalyze his married lead actors. Per Vanity Fair , Kubrick pushed Cruise and Kidman into admitting what they feared most about marriage during "conversations that the three vowed to keep secret." According to Kidman, these conversations left her then-husband subjected to "things that he didn't want to hear," and the discussions were "brutally honest at times." She also told Vanity Fair that while it was exciting that the lines of reality and fiction blurred, it was also dangerous. Cruise agreed: "I wanted this to work, but you're playing with dynamite when you act. Emotions kick up."

'Pluses and minuses' to filming a movie with your real-life spouse

In a 1999 press conference , Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were asked if they felt safe playing a married couple on screen, or if they would have felt better working alongside someone else. Cruise responded that he was "glad she played [the role in 'Eyes Wide Shut'] because of her talent." He elaborated, "As an actress, I was really excited, because she's such a great actress and artist and to share that experience together is something very special and I think that we had a lot to offer because we are married." Cruise also admitted that the entire experience "had its pluses and minuses."

While Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise would eventually divorce  in 2001 after 11 years of marriage — and only two years after the release of "Eyes Wide Shut" — they are reportedly open to a reunion as friends or co-workers as of early 2021 (via OK! Magazine ). Plus, in 2017, Kidman told Deadline that she would have continued working with Kubrick for years on end, as she really enjoyed the experience.

"I could have stayed with Stanley [Kubrick] for five years. Never come back," she said. "I look back at that and go, 'Thank God I had this slightly zen approach to things.' Because I was married and I had my kids there. It wasn't like I was rushing to get finished, to get somewhere else. I was there, with Stanley, and I didn't care. Whatever." Kidman added, "He had a great wit and he was a philosopher, but he was never preachy. It was always coming from a place of curiosity and questioning and exploration."

Ethical Principles in the Movie The Firm Essay (Movie Review)

Society and principles, ethical decision making.

This analytical treatise attempts to explicitly describe ethical belief and code which could be applied in the movie, The Firm in order to juggle between values and purposes in the process of applying ethical principles. Besides, the treatise explores the process of ethical decision making in relation to the above film.

Business ethics are presented as influenced by internal and external factors which when improperly aligned, result in an ethical dilemma. The main contributory factors to ethical dilemmas in the business environment of the Bendini, Lambert, & Locke firm include personal feelings and thoughts that are improper, especially on self-concept, monetary gains, and encroachment of privacy. These should be controlled and aligned with the moral of the company as dictated by the work ethics act of the United States of America.

The ethical crimes committed by of the Bendini, Lambert, & Locke firm include conspiracy, securities fraud, false statement, blackmail and encroachment of the employees’ privacy. Mitch’s house and those of his fellow employee are bugged by the company against the right of privacy act.

Based on the code of ethics of the US, it is clear that the management of the Bendini, Lambert, & Locke firm breached all the ethical principles. They were involved in drug, murder, and conspiracy to fraud scandals besides failing to exercise professional due care and apt professional behavior. In addition, Mitch did not exercise integrity when revealing the secrets of his clients against the lawyer-client privacy ethics (Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell 2011). This means that he lacked integrity and objectivity in representing his lawyers.

Ethics define the moral values which this employee failed to honor. As a whistle blower, the business ethics codes in the US guarantees protection. Mitch should have opted for this alternative upon knowing the unethical acts of the Bendini, Lambert, & Locke firm.

Unfortunately, he only resorted to this act as leverage and not because of moral values. For instance, it would be pragmatic to believe that “it can be rational to choose a profitable but unethical behavior as well as to choose a costly but ethical behavior” (Menestrel, 2002, p. 160).

The main persuasive element of this approach is to combine the two, the material and the ethical concerns, which may lead to the belief that any behavior consists of “a process and a consequence” (Menestrel, 2002, p. 160). In this way, a business has to adopt a model that involves both ethical and profit seeking behavior which may be called the optimal behavior (Castleberry, 2009). This approach would have controlled the Bendini, Lambert, & Locke firm to practice ethical and moral standards in doing business (Hausman, Doran and Pollack, 1993).

Mitch is faced with the dilemma of either whistle blowing the unethical activities of his employer or accepting the attractive financial rewards to sustain his family and cover up for his underprivileged background. The former option would give Mitch a deep satisfaction of doing what is ethically right besides security assurance by the government since there is an act of protection for people like him. The latter option, which Mitch apparently embraced, involved working in an environment with many ethical dilemmas (3M, 2013).

The process of ethical decision making is dependent on heuristic since it provides assumptions, integration of options, and ethical control. A decision environment often experiences dynamics and swings which create short and long term effect on chances of survival of more than one alternative to solve a problem (Graham, 2004).

When faced with a decision dilemma that requires critical assessments, it is important to resorts to analytical tools that facilitate competitive positioning advantage. Each option is assigned to a quadrant with predetermined response strategies and ‘follow-ups’ upon implementation (Hausman, Doran and Pollack, 1993). Before going ahead to choose one of the options as the final choice, the decision maker must undertake a cost-benefit analysis of that choice.

In the case of Mitch McDeere, he should consider the economic impact in order to make a socially responsible decision since it functions in a dichotomous path. There is a very thin line between the rationally correct, economically viable, and ethically correct decision (Vitell, Nwachukwu, and Barnes, 2003). Decision making in a business environment must be based on addressing all the above aspects and not just one of them. An ethical decision may incur short-term loss to a business, but would be profitable in the long run.

Through adopting the idealist approach in decision making, in Mitch’s position, I would settle for the settled for the former option to avoid a situation of ethical dilemma since it is in line with the moral codes.

In order to promote the ideals of positive business ethics, it is vital to develop a good organizational culture by fostering a strong alignment on the set path of achieving goals, missions and vision. This is achievable through adhering to the written rules of engagement, expected behavior, and accepting the repercussions on psychological tendency to fulfill selfish interests at the expense of company goals and objectives.

Tom Cruise fans have shared their reactions to the actor’s appearance on The Last Last Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Special .

The Top Gun: Maverick star appeared on the special, which aired shortly before the final episode of James Corden’s late-night talk show .

In his segment, Cruise gatecrashed a Broadway performance of the Lion King musical alongside Corden.

Dressed as the characters Pumbaa and Timon respectively, Cruise and Corden launched into a rendition of the famous song “Hakuna Matata”.

In an extended video released online, Cruise can also be seen singing the musical number “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”.

  • James Corden’s stale, gimmicky Late Late Show finale was a fitting end for TV’s quintessential late-night host
  • James Corden Late Late Show – live: Last show sees British host wave goodbye to America after eight years
  • James Corden’s biggest controversies as his final Late Late Show episode airs

While many voiced their appreciation for the stunt, some viewers branded the segment “bizarre”.

“This may be the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen Tom Cruise do,” one person wrote (which may be quite the claim ).

“Is anyone watching the James Corden prime time special?? Him and Tom Cruise are so chaotic together,” another person commented.

“I’ve seen Tom Cruise do so many crazy things, but I never thought I see him do something like this. I can’t stop laughing. I will miss James and Tom’s friendship,” someone else remarked.

“10/10 no notes. Incredible,” someone else wrote.

Cruise has previously appeared on Corden’s series multiple times, including last year, when he memorably re-enacted an aerial Top Gun stunt with Corden in tow.

According to Corden, Cruise was “adamant” about appearing on his show one last time .

Towards the end of his final episode, Corden addressed the audience and issued a warning for America as he prepared to head back to the UK.

As well as Cruise, Corden’s final show included guests such as Harry Styles and Will Ferrell, who at one point demolished the host’s desk with a sledgehammer .

Five of Corden’s rival talk show hosts also appeared in a sketch, warning the presenter not to give away “sacred secrets” .

Tom Cruise's motorcycle stunt in 'Mission: Impossible 7' was a surprise even to the movie studio: They didn't know 'what they were getting involved in,' says director

  • Insider spoke to Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie at the UK premiere of "Mission: Impossible 7."
  • The film's biggest stunt involves Cruise riding a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff.
  • McQuarrie said movie studio Paramount didn't know "what they were getting involved in" until they saw the scene.

Insider Today

Tom Cruise has always been known to do his own stunts, especially when it comes to the "Mission: Impossible" franchise.

Each movie follows Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and a team of agents who are tasked with stopping nefarious forces, and this usually involves a death-defying act by Cruise.

And "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" sees the star undertake his biggest stunt yet in a literal leap of faith, as he rides a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff  before opening his parachute and gliding down to reach a train.

Speaking to Insider on the red carpet at the film's UK premiere on Thursday, director Christopher McQuarrie said that the ambitious stunt was something of a surprise to the film's studio, Paramount, as well as fans.

"Well, fortunately, we were in one country, they were in another country, and communication was pretty fuzzy at that time in the world," McQuarrie said of pitching the stunt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I don't think they really knew what they were getting involved in until we sent it to them, which is kind of the case," the director added.

"We talk about things in the abstract, but until they really see it… I don't think any of us fully grasped what we were getting ourselves into until we did it."

It's a jaw-dropping moment, and Paramount previously released a making-of featurette detailing what went into the stunt, with Cruise practicing the scene numerous times before production started in Norway.

But the stunt sets the bar quite high for 2024's "Dead Reckoning Part Two." However, Cruise told Insider that he's more than up for the challenge.

"I'm always pushing. I just remember, every time they say, 'Can you top it? Can you not top it?' we're always pushing," the actor told Insider. "Every film I do, whatever genre it's in, I want to make it as entertaining as possible for that audience. I know I can do things better."

Cruise's costar Pom Klementieff also spoke to Insider about the challenge of filming a brutal fight scene in a confined alleyway in Venice.

"It was incredible. It was very hard to shoot because it was very challenging and very narrow. So we had to think of where to place the camera, where to place the lighting, because we were also shooting at night time, you know?" said the "Guardians of the Galaxy" star.

Klementieff added: "But at the same time, there was not a better person to do it with than Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, so I felt really lucky to be able to do that."

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" is in theaters on July 12.

GM’s Cruise Loses Its Self-Driving License in San Francisco After a Robotaxi Dragged a Person

Cruise autonomous vehicle in San Francisco

California has suspended driverless vehicles operated by the General Motors subsidiary Cruise in the city of San Francisco—just two months after the state began allowing the robotaxis to pick up paying passengers around the clock. The suspension stems from a gruesome incident on October 2 in which a human-driven vehicle hit a female pedestrian and threw her into the path of a Cruise car. The driverless Cruise car hit her, stopped, and then tried to pull over, dragging her approximately 20 feet.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles says in a statement that it has determined that Cruise’s vehicles are not safe for public operation, and that the company ”misrepresented” safety information about its autonomous vehicle technology. In a filing on the suspension, the agency says that Cruise initially provided footage showing only the collision between its vehicle and the woman. It says Cruise did not disclose information about its car's subsequent “pull-over maneuver” that dragged the woman after the initial impact, and that the DMV only obtained full footage nine days after the crash.

Cruise spokesperson Navideh Forghani says Cruise has stayed in close contact with regulators but disputed the DMV’s timeline. She says the agency was shown video of the entire incident, including the pull-over, the day after the crash. The DMV says Cruise will either have to appeal its decision or provide information about how it has addressed its technology’s “deficiencies” in order to win back its permit.

Also today, the California Public Utilities Commission, which initially granted Cruise permission to carry passengers, suspended the company’s permits as it carries out its own investigation of the company, CPUC spokesperson Terrie Prosper wrote in an email. Passengers will not be able to ride in San Francisco until the permits are reinstated.

The suspensions mark a serious setback for the driverless vehicle industry, which has faced charges of under-regulation even as Cruise and others plan to expand to new cities across the US. Cruise is still permitted to operate robotaxis in San Francisco with a human safety driver behind the wheel—which is how the company initially began to test self-driving cars in the city. The DMV suspension has no specified end date.

Cruise provided additional details of the October 2 collision in a blog post published today. According to the company, which has 40 cameras and sensors mounted on each of its vehicles, its self-driving vehicle quickly swerved and braked in an attempt to avoid a collision with the woman, but still made impact. The vehicle then stopped but, according to Cruise, “attempted to pull over,” dragging the woman an additional 20 feet. Cruise says this sort of evasive maneuver was built into the vehicle’s software to promote safety, and is required by both California and federal regulators.

Cruise says the vehicle then stopped again. Emergency responders arrived soon after, according to TV station NBC Bay Area, and the San Francisco Fire Department said the victim was “extricated from beneath the vehicle using rescue tools.” The department said she was transported to the hospital with multiple traumatic injuries. The human driver of the vehicle that initially struck the woman has not been caught.

Last week, the top US road safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, opened an investigation into Cruise’s autonomous driving system, based on at least four reported incidents in which Cruise vehicles collided with or got close to pedestrians and pedestrian crosswalks, including the October 2 crash

Forghani, the Cruise spokesperson, says the company has shared video and other information related to the incident with the California DMV and NHTSA officials. “Our teams are currently doing an analysis to identify potential enhancements to the [autonomous vehicle]’s response to this kind of extremely rare event,” she wrote in a statement.

In August, California’s DMV asked Cruise to cut in half the number of self-driving vehicles operating in the city after its robotaxis were involved in a series of crashes, including one in which a Cruise vehicle collided with a fire truck that ran a red light on the way to an emergency.

Even before Cruise and its leading competitor, Alphabet’s Waymo , received permission from the state taxi regulator to operate all-day paid rides in San Francisco, both companies received criticism from city residents, emergency responders, and labor advocates for incidents in which the technology froze in or impeded city traffic .

In August, the San Francisco Fire Department told state officials that its employees experienced at least 55 incidents with self-driving cars since the beginning of 2023, including a handful in which fire officials report the cars delayed emergency responders. In one incident, worried fire personnel broke the windows of a Cruise vehicle in an attempt to prevent it from driving onto an active fire scene. Robotaxis have also delayed city transit buses and streetcars. Cruise said earlier this month that it has improved the way its technology responds to emergency vehicles and situations.

All the women Tom Cruise has loved and lost over the years

In the years since he split from third wife Katie Holmes , Tom Cruise has done his best to keep his love life out of the spotlight. But sometimes, he can't avoid headlines. Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at all the women the iconic action star — whose newest movie, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One," opens in theaters on July 12, 2023 — has loved and lost over the years…

In 2016, Tom's first girlfriend, a woman named Diane Cox, opened up to DailyMail.com about her two-year romance with the A-list actor. The duo met at their high school prom in 1979 when he was 18 and she was 17 — and a grade below him. They ended up ditching their dates for each other and dating for more than two years. The high school sweethearts ultimately split when Diane cheated while they were struggling to make a long-distance relationship work after Tom left his native New Jersey for Hollywood. "We didn't talk about marriage but he told me I was the love of his life, the only person he wanted," Diane said years later.

Keep reading for Tom's romance retrospective…

Tom Cruise 's first famous girlfriend? That would be "Little House on the Prairie" star Melissa Gilbert! They briefly dated in the early '80s. "It was when he first moved to Los Angeles and I think I was 16, maybe, or 17. … He was a struggling starving actor and I was working. I actually bought him his first set of dishes," she said during a 2014 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live," adding that Tom was a good kisser but that things between them never went much further than that.

Actor Curtis Armstrong — who had a small role in "Risky Business" — claimed in his 2017 memoir that Tom Cruise had an "intense affair" with the film's leading lady, Rebecca De Mornay, when they shot the 1983 comedy. At the time, she was involved with a different actor: the late Harry Dean Stanton, who was 36 years Tom's senior. Tom and Rebecca were seen together several times in 1985, though it's unclear how long their "intense affair" actually lasted.

One and done! During a 2013 appearance on Chelsea Handler's " Chelsea Lately " show, Heather Locklear said she only went out with Tom Cruise once — even though they were photographed together multiple times in the early '80s. They went to a nightclub together after meeting at an audition, she said, but her interest in him cooled when he started dancing: "You know in 'Risky Business' where he does that dance in his underwear and does the split? We were dancing in a club and he went into that," she recalled. "You just kind of stand there and don't know what to do. Do you dance around him? It was weird. So I just sat down." And that was that.

Tom Cruise and Cher first met at Madonna and Sean Penn's 1985 nuptials. They reconnected at the White House a few months later during an event focused on people with dyslexia. "We didn't go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there," the singer recalled in 2018. Five years earlier, she gushed that Tom, who's 16 years her junior, was "in the top five" of her all-time greatest lovers. "It was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute," she said. During a 2011 interview with "Entertainment Tonight," the superstar singer said that she loved Tom but that their careers ultimately pulled them apart: "[We broke up] after 'Risky Business' and right before 'The Color of Money.' I couldn't go to Chicago [where he was working] and that was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back," she revealed.

Tom Cruise briefly romanced musician Patti Scialfa in 1985 — a few years before her relationship with Bruce Springsteen turned romantic following his divorce from his first wife, Julianne Phillips. (Patti and Bruce tied the knot in 1991.)

In the mid-'80s, Tom Cruise met actress Mimi Rogers, who's seven years his senior, through mutual friends at a dinner party. They tied the knot in 1987 when she was 31 and he was just 24. (Emilio Estevez served as Tom's best man during the super-secret nuptials.) The actor once told Rolling Stone of his first missus, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her." But it wasn't meant to be: Tom reportedly filed to divorce Mimi in late 1989. "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time," they said in a joint statement in early 1990. (It's widely believed, by the way, that Mimi introduced Tom to Scientology.)

In the wake of his split from Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise fell hard for Nicole Kidman . They first connected on the 1989 set of the racing drama "Days of Thunder" and tied the knot on Christmas Eve in 1990 following a whirlwind courtship of about a year. A few years later, Tom told Vanity Fair that he felt "instant lust" for the Australian actress. "I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning. It grew into love and respect," he said.

Newlyweds Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman shared the screen for the second time in Ron Howard's 1992 Western drama "Far and Away," which performed well at the box office in spite of poor reviews from critics.

In 1993, Tom Cruise and second wife Nicole Kidman adopted daughter Isabella Jane, who was 2 months old at the time. Two years later, they became a family of four when the "Days of Thunder" co-stars adopted a 2-week-old baby boy: their son Connor.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman shared the screen for the third and final time in 1999's "Eyes Wide Shut." More than two decades later, the Australian actress would tell The New York Times that she and Tom were still "happily married" while shooting the Stanley Kubrick-directed erotic thriller. Still, less than two years later, their marriage of a decade came to an end: Tom filed for divorce in February 2001. "Maybe I don't have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I'm not willing to," Nicole told the Times in late 2020 of what went wrong.

Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruise grew close while shooting the 2001 psychological thriller "Vanilla Sky." Their relationship of about three years came to an end in early 2004. Nearly a decade later, Vanity Fair reported that the couple parted ways when the Spanish actress refused to convert to Scientology.

In 2004 and 2005, Tom Cruise briefly dated Nazanin Boniadi, who later had stints on "General Hospital," "How I Met Your Mother," "Scandal" and "Homeland." According to persistent rumors, the Church of Scientology set up Tom and the Iranian British actress after "auditioning" several young beauties for the part of his real-life love interest. Former Scientologist Leah Remini, who's been extremely critical of the church over the years, claimed in her 2015 memoir that Nazanin "underwent a confidential mission for the church where she thought she was being prepared for a special humanitarian project but ended up with the role of Tom's girlfriend." The "King of Queens" alum also alleged that the church pushed Nazanin to break up with her then-boyfriend for Tom and gave her an expensive makeover to prepare her for her romance with the A-lister. Ultimately, the relationship lasted just three months. (But Tom and the Church of Scientology have denied the allegations about how his relationship with Naz came to be.)

In 2005, Tom Cruise briefly pursued a pre-fame Sofia Vergara . But things between them never took off reportedly because of their differences regarding religion.

Tom Cruise first connected with Katie Holmes — who'd spoken openly in interviews about her childhood crush on him — in April 2005 when, according to the rumor mill, they met to discuss a potential role for her in 2006's "Mission: Impossible III." Just weeks later, they made their red carpet debut as a couple at an event in Rome. The following month, Tom made headlines for jumping on a sofa while gushing over Katie during an interview with Oprah Winfrey on her eponymous talk show. Things only moved faster from there…

In June 2005 — just two months after they met — Tom Cruise proposed to Katie Holmes at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Then in April 2006 — less than a year after they first connected — the "Dawson's Creek" alum gave birth to their daughter, Suri Cruise.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes tied the knot at the Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy, on Nov. 18, 2006. Less than six years later on June 29, 2012, she quietly filed for divorce amid whispers that their differences over Scientology were to blame.

In the summer of 2012, several dubious tabloid reports attempted to link Tom Cruise to fellow devout Scientologist Yolanda Pecoraro, who reportedly met the A-list actor for the first time in 2004. According to the rumor mill, he was interested in her at the time, though nothing ever came of the attraction. Nothing ever came of the talk in 2012 either! Despite the rumors that the Church of Scientology wanted to set up Tom with Yolanda in the wake of his split from Katie Holmes , they were never seen together in public. She ultimately married a different famous Scientologist: "Malcolm in the Middle" actor Chris Masterson. (They're pictured together in 2015.)

In late 2012, Tom Cruise got tongues wagging when he was seen spending time with Jennifer Akerman — the younger sister of his "Rock of Ages" co-star Malin Akerman — at a nightclub in Stockholm following the Swedish premiere of "Jack Reacher." But the actor's rep called the romance rumors "completely ridiculous" and insisted to E! News that the blonde beauty had a serious boyfriend at the time. Just a few weeks later, Tom shut down another set of false romance rumors when he was linked to Cynthia Jorge — then-manager of New York City's Beauty & Essex — after they were seen dancing together at a different NYC hotspot. A source told People magazine "it was nothing but a casual night out" while a New York Post source insisted the pair were "just friends."

The rumor mill worked overtime to connect Tom Cruise to former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko after they co-starred in the 2013 sci-fi love story "Oblivion" … even though she was dating Danny Huston at the time. There's no evidence they were ever anything other than colleagues.

Tom Cruise sparked romance rumors with fellow Scientologist Laura Prepon when they were seen dining together in Los Angeles in late 2013. Then in April 2014, Page Six reported that the duo had been "secretly dating" for months. But reps for both the action star and the "That '70s Show" alum insisted the rumors were "not true" and that the pair were just friends. (Laura eventually married a different actor: Ben Foster. She's since walked away from the church.)

In May 2017, the rumor mill erupted with buzz that Tom Cruise was dating "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" co-star Vanessa Kirby after they were photographed sharing an on-set smooch . (Previous tabloid reports alleged he'd fallen for her … and that he thought she was " perfect to be his next wife .") The following year, Vanessa called the rumors " disconcerting " — especially because she was in the midst of a long-term relationship with actor Callum Turner at the time.

In late 2020, The Sun reported that Tom Cruise and "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" co-star Hayley Atwell were secretly dating after growing close on set. The following day, a People magazine source threw cold water on the British tabloid's report, insisting that the romance rumors were "not true at all." Yet the rumors persisted, although there was a spattering of reports in the summer of 2021 claiming the action star and the British beauty had gone their separate ways.

The co-stars were all smiles while attending Wimbledon together in 2021. Though fresh reports claimed they rekindled their romance in early 2022, The Sun published a story in June 2022 citing sources who said it was over again. "They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year. But what was working behind closed doors didn't work out so well when it was made public, and the fanfare around them as a couple exploded again," a source told the British tabloid. "They have now decided they are better as friends."

In July 2023, Hayley shot down the reports herself, telling the Independent the "weird [romance] rumors" felt "dirty" and "grubby" and that she views Tom and "M:I" franchise director Chris McQuarrie as "sort of two uncles," not love interests.

In May 2023, Tom Cruise once again got the rumor mill churning… this time with speculation that he'd fallen for a global pop star after he was seen chatting with Shakira at the 2023 Miami Formula One Grand Prix in Florida that month. Though they certainly looked comfortable together, TMZ reported that Shakira and Tom were not romantically involved and were at the F1 race because they'd both been invited by a mutual friend, driver Lewis Hamilton.
