The First Electric Coach in the North East
Merry Christmas from Pelican Bus & Coach
The coach industry has to be first foot forward with zero-emission. Let’s lead the way, but not by pressuring clients. Instead, we should find a way to interest them in the technology.
Elise Robertson, Swans Travel Managing Director
We would like to thank the team at Swans for this investment and look forward to the second vehicle going into service soon.

Coatham and Swans take zero-emission coaches
The first zero-emission coaches for operators in the North of England have been handed over, with a further example for one of those operators to follow early in 2023.
Coatham Coaches of Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Swans Travel of Chadderton were each presented with their respective Yutong TCe12s at Euro Bus Expo. Swans has a second on order, while the first example has debuted a refreshed brand for the Greater Manchester business.
Both the existing coaches, and the forthcoming example for Swans, are for corporate contracts. Coatham Coaches will use its example seven days per week on a shuttle for a client with policies that require a reduction in car traffic to its site. The customer asked Coatham if it could provide a zero-emission vehicle “and we said yes,” says the operator’s Managing Director Mark Hodgson (pictured above, left).
Mr Hodgson adds that there are early signs of demand for the same from other customers, with the wider focus on net zero industry on Teesside a key to that. He thus does not rule out further TCe12s in the future.
Coatham Coaches has taken a 42kW portable charger from vehicle supplier Pelican Bus and Coach to work with the first TCe12. The charger works with a 60A, three-phase workshop supply. Coatham previously assessed a demonstrator TCe12, and Mr Hodgson says that vehicle was well received by drivers.
Swans’ first TCe12 will be used for a corporate client in Cheshire.
Day-to-day charging will be undertaken at the customer’s site, which has suitable equipment. The second TCe12 for Swans is expected in March 2023.
“The coach industry has to be first foot forward with zero-emission,” says Swans Travel Managing Director Elise Robertson (lower picture, left). “Let’s lead the way, but not by pressuring clients. Instead, we should find a way to interest them in the technology.”
Swans held back the debut of its new brand until the first TCe12 was ready, she adds. It will be rolled out across the remainder of the fleet in due course.

Team Harrison Holidays put their best feet forward
The team from Harrison Holidays have been putting their best feet forward with some fundraising pursuits that have seen them embarking on trekking, walking and marathoning adventures. This has all been in aid of some local charities close to their hearts.
First out of the blocks was Elise Robertson , who is Group Finance Director and a new member of the Harrison Holidays team. In May she took on what’s described as “England’s toughest mountain challenge”, aptly named Lakes 3000 , because all the summits top 3,000 feet. The aim is to complete Scafell Pike (3210ft), Scafell (3209ft), Helvellyn (3120ft) and Skiddaw (3050ft) within 12 hours, which this year’s participants smashed in 11 hours.
Lakes 3000 is an annual trek organised by the Chronicle Sunshine Fund , a North East charity that provides specialist and adapted equipment to children aged 0-19 living with disabilities, additional needs, chronic and terminal illness.
A fun party atmosphere got things underway for Elaine Stocker , who set off on the Star Trekk almost at the same time as Elise was completing her trek in the Lakes. Taking in the bright lights of Southport, she joined hundreds of other walkers on a seven mile moonlit walk around the town and surrounding area all to raise funds for Queenscourt Hospice . As the walkers made their way around the nearby villages, including Birkdale and not too far from Riverside Holiday Park where Elaine is based as a Holiday Home Owners Administrator, they were greeted by the pink ribbons adorning trees and buildings to welcome and support them.
Queenscourt Hospice supports the communities of West Lancashire, Southport and Formby and this is the 17th year that Star Trekk has taken place, but the first time that Elaine has participated. Elaine has been part of the Harrison Holidays family for 23 years and although she’s not done anything like the trek before thoroughly enjoyed taking part.
Our third wonderful member of the Harrison Holidays team is in the throes of a full on training routine as he prepares for a 50 mile linear run across the heart of the Lake District, known as the Lakeland 50 . Alex Atkinson is an inspiration. Amazingly, it was only in 2020 that he started running when he was looking for something to keep himself occupied during the Covid lockdown. Beginning at a 5k run, it wasn’t long before he was reaching 10k and kept increasing his targets, progressing to half marathons and then on to the full marathon distance and beyond.
This has led him to the Lakeland 50, described as “one the greatest ultra-trail challenges in Europe, perhaps the world”. It will take place on Saturday 29 July and is Alex’s first run for charity. He has chosen to support EPIC KIDZ , which gives under privileged children across Lancashire and beyond access to various sports and activities.
By day Alex is in charge of stock control and finance at Harrison Holidays’ head office in Southport, but running is such a passion that you may see him out training. His favourite holiday park for running is Percy Wood because he enjoys the Northumberland countryside and the nearby coastline and endless trails.
All this talk of walks, treks and runs might have inspired you. Spending time at a Harrison Holidays holiday park could be the perfect time to enjoy such pursuits (perhaps in a slightly more relaxing way than our charity adventurers!).

Photos: Elise Robertson Stars in IMAGINING RACHEL as Part of Unmuted Participants' SOLO FLIGHT Festival
The festival runs now through May 10th.
Storyteller Elise Robertson pushes the boundaries of digital narrative in her solo work about environmentalist Rachel Carson. Appearing as part of Unmuted Participants' First Annual SOLO FLIGHT, an Online Festival Running April 10 -May 10. Writer/actor/director Elise Robertson unravels her own coming-of-age in an attempt to get to the truth about environmental icon and fellow Pittsburgher Rachel Carson's nature in her digital solo show Imagining Rachel.
Rachel Carson is known for exposing the damage that pesticides were doing to man and nature both, but fiercely guarded her own privacy. She hid her battle with breast cancer even as her book Silent Spring called out DDT as a carcinogen, fearing she would be labeled hysterical (she was anyway). She also hid the truth about her niece's out-of-wedlock child (whom she later adopted), and her relationship with Maine neighbor Dorothy Freeman.
Growing up less than 12 miles from Rachel, 40 years later, Elise interweaves her own life experience to provide counterpoint, context, and comic relief. In this two-hour show, she plays both women as they bend time to connect at different ages and share their experiences as women, environmentalists, artists, and mothers. Is art selfish? What is a heroic act? Where does nature end and humanity begin?
VIEW TRAILER HERE
Developed during the pandemic, Imagining Rachel was conceived and staged by Robertson in her tiny backyard studio using an eclectic mix of found props, greenscreen backgrounds, stop motion animation, multiple zoom screens, and more. The result is a groundbreaking digital storytelling experience-a whimsical, immersive journey that feels both sweeping and intimate, in which Robertson plays multiple characters over the course of a century, all without leaving her office chair.
As a filmmaker, Elise Robertson is known for her dramatic adaptations of literary works for PBS, directing dark feature-length period thriller Donner Pass, and her feminist re-imagining of the Peter Pan story, Darling, Darling, Wendy. Many audiences will recognise Robertson from her acting work, including Academy Award nominated film American Sniper, as well as hit television series' NCIS, Masters of Sex, This is Us and many more. She recurs in upcoming Amazon Studios series The Power. A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Robertson graduated from Northwestern University's Theatre department with a minor in fine art.
Imagining Rachel is Elise's first solo show. It was developed in the Los Angeles based online solo collective Unmuted Participants, where Robertson is a founding member. In 2021 the piece toured digitally to the Edinburgh Fringe and 2022 sees it visit the New Zealand and Brighton Fringes digitally, in addition to its current festival.
Showing as part of Unmuted Participants First Annual Online Solo Flight: a collection of Solo Performances, it will be available online, on-demand beginning April 10 and will have an interactive Premiere Showing with talkback via Zoom on April 20 at 7 PM PST in honor of Earth Day.
