Philadelphia 76ers

76ers promise 'a lot of changes' around joel embiid, tyrese maxey.

The Sixers first-round exit against the Knicks made it 41 years since their last NBA championship.

ESPN logo

PHILADELPHIA -- Say goodbye to the Philadelphia 76ers .

No, not Joel Embiid . Tyrese Maxey is sticking around, too. Nick Nurse seems like a perfect long-term fit as coach.

But for the rest of the Sixers? It's time to pretty much wish them well, with just about the entire team -- players such as Kelly Oubre Jr., Kyle Lowry and Nic Batum -- ending the season with an expired contract.

Team president Daryl Morey says this summer has about $65 million in salary cap space, a first-round draft pick, a max contract to offer to Maxey and plenty of questions to solve on how to finally, truly build an NBA championship contender around Embiid.

76ers bus trip

"We're not going to have continuity," Morey said Monday at the 76ers' headquarters in New Jersey. "We'll have continuity with our stars and our head coach but we're going to have a lot of changes this season."

The Sixers first-round exit against the Knicks made it 41 years since their last NBA championship. The Sixers haven't even advanced out of the second round since 2001. It's time to start over -- this time with a championship chase, not a Process.

"We're focused on Joel and Tyrese and we're focused on now," Morey said.

The 76ers have money to spend. But will they aim high for an aging player such as Paul George? What about a wild-card play at LeBron James?

76ers bus trip

James and George would have to decline player options to hit the market. Nurse won a championship in Toronto with Pascal Siakam and was an assistant coach with the Raptors when DeMar DeRozan was on the team. Both players are free agents and could be a nice fit in Philly.

"You have to factor in the age," Morey said. "We feel like we're in the window where we have to win now. We're mostly focused on getting the best players that fit with Joel and Tyrese."

Embiid will be an old 30 next season and expecting the All-Star center to miss a significant chunk of playing time because of injuries is an unfortunate rite of the season for the Sixers.

Embiid has never played more than 68 games in a season and was limited to only 39 this season in large part because of knee surgery. The 76ers finished 31-8 in the regular season with Embiid -- about a 65-win pace -- and a woeful 16-27 without him.

"I feel like I could have done a better job with the players so that we were in a better spot to win without him," Morey said. "That said, we do spend 90% of the time figuring out how to win the title with him. It can't be a big focus, how we play without him. We know that team can't win a championship. It's really, how do we manage through it better? I felt like, on me, the depth wasn't quite there when he was out to win at the level we wanted to win at."

While the Sixers and their fans might wish Embiid would take a summer off to rest up, he is set to play for USA Basketball at the Paris Olympics. The 76ers won't stand in Embiid's way.

"It's a dream of his to represent the United States in the Olympics," Morey said. "I think it's important to support the dreams of your best player."

With the Sixers in win-now mode, a string of solid seasons usually has them drafting toward the mid to late first round. Maxey in 2020 was the last draft pick who made any kind of impact.

The 76ers are scheduled to pick 16th overall and hold the 41st overall pick in the second round. While the draft quality has been knocked for having little depth, Morey said he's fine with staying at 16.

"We don't really focus on the draft for help now," Morey said. "I do really love 16. The storylines have been that the draft is worse. I don't see that at all. I'm very excited at who's at 16. That said, as you might expect, we have all options on the table. Trade into the future so we keep more picks available for future trades."

Maxey's career skyrocketed this season with his first All-Star berth, the NBA's Most Improved Player award, and a season-extending 46-point effort in a Game 5 win in New York.

"We should all learn not to bet against Tyrese," Morey said.

He is a restricted free agent, meaning the 76ers could match any offer extended to the personable guard. Maxey is eligible to get a five-year, $205 million contract.

"A year ago, if we had polled everyone in the media or the GMs, it wouldn't have been unanimous that Tyrese could take that step forward that we hoped he could," Morey said.

"This offseason's a big one," Morey said. "I owe it to the fans, to ownership, to everybody, to get this team in a place where we're competing for championships. We obviously didn't achieve it this year."

Watch 2 bus-size asteroids make close flybys of Earth this week (video)

Two bus-sized asteroids will zip past Earth closely but safely this week, starting with a 7-meter-long (22-feet) space rock named 2024 JF that's expected to pass by on Monday (May 6) evening.

Astronomers expect 2024 JF to make its closest approach at 8:04 p.m. ET tonight (1204 GMT on Tuesday). It will be followed by the 10-meter-long (32-feet) asteroid named 2024 JR1, which is expected to make its closest approach on Tuesday (May 7).

You can watch both encounters live starting on Monday at 3:30 p.m. ET (0730 GMT), courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project .

Related: What are asteroids?

The first space rock will be about 295,000 miles (475,000 kilometers) from our planet at its closest approach, according to estimates from Asteroid Watch , a dashboard by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory of near-Earth asteroids and comets . It tracks objects whose orbits bring them within 4.6 million miles (7.5 million kilometers) of Earth, or nearly 20 times the distance to the moon .

Meanwhile, 2024 JR1 will approach at a closer distance, about 184,000 miles (296,000 kilometers) of our planet, just three days after being discovered . At its closest distance to Earth, the space rock will be closer to our planet than the moon, which is on average at over 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometers). The asteroid will be in the constellation Ursa Major during its closest approach, while 2024 JF will be in Boötes , according to The Sky Live .

Two days after the above two space rocks zoom past Earth, another space rock named 2024 JD will approach our planet from roughly 172,741 miles (278,000 kilometers), just a week after being discovered . This is less than the distance from Earth to the moon, but like the other two asteroids, 2024 JD poses no danger to our planet.

This year alone, astronomers have cataloged close to 40 asteroids whose orbits have snuck them between Earth and the moon , the Watchers reported . NASA has cataloged nearly 35,000 near-Earth objects till date, few of which pose any real risk of striking Earth.

Full injury report for Kelly Oubre Jr., Sixers vs. Kings in road trip finale

T he Philadelphia 76ers will look to finish up this current 4-game West Coast road trip on a high note on Monday when they take on the Sacramento Kings. If Philadelphia can come up with a win, it will be an impressive 2-2 road trip when considering the opponents and the adversity.

Once again, the Sixers will be without the services of Joel Embiid (left knee meniscus procedure), De'Anthony Melton (lumbar spine bone stress), and Robert Covington (left knee bone bruise). Kyle Lowry, who missed the win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, is not listed on the injury report.

Kelly Oubre Jr. will join the injury report as he is listed as questionable due to left shoulder soreness.

https://twitter.com/Ky_Carlin/status/1772347849818173739

If Oubre can't go, then one has to assume that the Sixers will turn to Nic Batum or Cam Payne. Batum did not play against the Clippers on Sunday while Payne has given Philadelphia a big boost.

Tip off with the Kings is set for 10 p.m. EDT on Monday.

Sixers purchase, plan to give away Game 6 tickets to keep Knicks fans out

76ers bus trip

On the brink of elimination from the NBA playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers are taking steps to make sure their homecourt advantage in Game 6 against the New York Knicks is more to their advantage.

Upset with the volume (measured in both numbers and decibels) of Knicks fans in their own building in a Game 4 loss , the Sixers ownership group has purchased 2,000 tickets to tonight's game and will be giving away those seats to "first responders, health care professionals and other local Philadelphia-based organizations."

Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin announced the plan Wednesday on social media, saying "(W)e absolutely CANNOT let Knicks fans take over our arena again!!!"

Star center Joel Embiid was particularly critical of the atmosphere at Wells Fargo Center during the Sixers' 97-92 loss on Sunday that put them in a 3-1 hole.

"I love our fans. Think it's unfortunate, and I'm not calling them out, but it is disappointing. Obviously, you got a lot of Knicks fans, and they're down the road," Embiid said. "Yeah, it kind of pisses me off, especially because Philly is considered a sports town. They've always shown up, and I don't think that should happen. Yeah, it's not OK."

The Sixers managed to stay alive with an improbable 112-106 overtime victory  at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, setting up a return trip to Philly.

Philadelphia native and NCAA championship-winning women's basketball coach Dawn Staley offered her encouragement to the fans as well, imploring them not to sell their Game 6 tickets to Knicks fans.

The Sixers may be a little "short-handed" tonight. Coach Nick Nurse apparently injured his finger when he slammed his hand down in frustration during Game 5, to the point where he couldn't draw up plays during the second half.

However, with his team's season on the line, Nurse is not expected to face any limitations in tonight's game.

NBA: Officials missed Tyrese Maxey travel at end of regulation

Tyrese Maxey drills a 3-pointer plus the foul to trim the Knicks' lead late. (0:36)

76ers bus trip

According to the NBA's Last Two Minute Report from Game 5 of the instant classic first-round series between the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks , Tyrese Maxey 's heroics never should've happened.

That's because the league said the game's refereeing crew missed a Maxey travel on his 3-pointer with 25.4 seconds to go, on which he was fouled by Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and made the free throw, beginning Philadelphia's remarkable comeback from down 6 with 28.9 seconds remaining in regulation to eventually win 112-106 in overtime and keep the 76ers' season alive.

There were three other calls that were deemed incorrect: there should have been 0.4 seconds left in regulation, and Knicks ball, after Nicolas Batum blocked Jalen Brunson 's potential game-tying shot out of bounds (the clock instead ran out, sending the game to overtime); Brunson should've been called for an offensive foul in overtime on the play that ultimately became a flagrant foul on Joel Embiid for hitting Brunson in the head; and Josh Hart was not actually out of bounds with 41.5 seconds to go.

It is another way in which Philadelphia's Game 5 miracle mirrors New York's doing the same thing to the Sixers in Game 2, as there were multiple officiating errors in New York's favor as part of that comeback in the Last Two Minute Report from that game.

The two teams have now both come back from at least five-point deficits inside the final 30 seconds of regulation to win a game in this series -- something that had happened only three times in the past 25 years before these playoffs, and now has happened twice in the same building in the past 10 days.

Game 6 will take place Thursday night in Philadelphia, with Game 7 -- if Philadelphia wins -- being back in New York on Saturday night.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

76ers bus trip

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

76ers bus trip

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

76ers bus trip

Via Vladimir

76ers bus trip

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

76ers bus trip

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

76ers bus trip

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

Paris authority slated for hiking cost of Métro and bus trips during Olympics

Union says rise unwelcome for tourists and residents – but officials say holders of regular transport passes will not be affected

Paris’s public transport authority has been accused of initiating ‘a bit of a racket’ after raising the price of Métro tickets by more than 85% and doubling the cost of bus tickets during the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.

A single journey ticket in the Métro will rise from €2.15 to €4, while a ticket for a city bus will double from €2.50 to €5 from 20 July – six days before the Games begin – and remain until 8 September, the transport authority RATP has announced.

Sami Kennouzi, of the CGT union at public transport company RATP, responsible for bus and tram workers, said it had not been consulted about the increase and only found out when the authority announced it.

“For us this ticket price increase doesn’t correspond to our idea of a public service and for such a global event it comes across as a bit of a racket for tourists and [local] passengers,” Kennouzi said.

City officials say most regular travellers will be unaffected by the hiked tariffs as they will already have transport passes, whose price has not risen. Those that do not have a pass have been advised to buy their tickets before 20 July.

One occasional bus user, Colombe, however, told BFM TV she would walk or cycle and avoid the bus. “Already the price for a short journey is high so I won’t be taking the bus for that price. We’ll find another solution,” she said.

Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Île-de-France regional authority, had previously said the aim of the Métro ticket hike, first announced in November, ahead of bus prices rises, was to avoid congestion at stations and urged Parisians to buy passes in advance. “I know a lot of ink has flowed on this subject … the ticket has been fixed at €4 precisely so nobody buys one,” she said in March.

She said there were an estimated 4 million occasional public transport users in the region and about 430,000 had signed up for a pass allowing them to avoid the higher ticket price. “Therefore, we have two months to convince around 3,570,000 people to do so,” she added.

The authority has set up a website to help locals plan for the Games, including details of roads and public transport showing which routes and lines will be most affected.

Three central Métro stations – Champs-Élysées – Clémenceau, Concorde and Tuileries, will be closed before the Games.

During the Games, 185km of road lanes around Paris will be reserved for vehicles carrying Olympic athletes, accredited journalists and members of official delegations.

Articulated electric buses coming to campus this summer

Photo of an articulated bus parked on the side of a road in front of a tall building on a sunny day.

You may have already spotted the shiny new buses winding their way through campus and the streets of Madison. Sightings will become more common, and you may even get a chance to take a ride as the new buses begin serving UW–Madison campus routes later this summer.

The impressive 60-foot articulated vehicles are longer than regular buses, with two sections connected by an accordion-like structure to maneuver around corners. They are part of the City of Madison’s all-electric fleet , which will serve the city’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes .

The new buses are expected to become fully operational on campus circulator routes beginning in fall 2024.

Transportation Services, in partnership with UW–Madison and the City of Madison, has contributed to matching efforts to secure federal funding for the new buses.

Photo of a group of people seated inside the articulated section of an articulated bus.

What is new about the articulated buses?

The new buses are fully electric, zero-emission vehicles. They will recharge at stations located at the Madison Metro bus depot. Additional recharging stations will be located throughout the city.

A regenerative braking system also recharges the batteries during operation by reclaiming the bus’s kinetic energy when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator.

According to the manufacturer , a zero-emission bus can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 135 metric tons – equivalent to the emissions produced by a 40-foot clean-diesel bus each year.

Being battery-operated, the electric buses also run more quietly than traditional buses.

Improved ADA accommodations

The buses are kneeling buses with wide doors and ramps for passengers with mobility devices. There will be two areas to accommodate wheelchairs, including a new self-service wheelchair securement space.

More elbow room

According to Mick Rusch of Madison Metro Transit, the new buses can comfortably carry up to 120 passengers — approximately 40 more passengers than standard city buses.

The additional capacity is expected to alleviate strain on campus routes by reducing instances of drivers bypassing people waiting at stops because the bus is too full.

What about the hairpin turn?

Transportation Services is working closely with UW campus partners and Madison Metro to ensure the larger buses can safely navigate campus roadways. On a recent test drive, the driver successfully maneuvered around Route 80’s tight corners — including the hairpin turn on Observatory Drive.

More information coming soon!

Details regarding bicycle transport, accessibility and tips for campus bus riders will be shared throughout the summer. Also follow Madison Metro Transit for updates .
