‘Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons’ Review: A Masterpiece That ‘Unfolds Like a Symphony’

The “Kung Fu Hustle” director’s follow up is the “result of a virtuoso working at the absolute peak of his talents”

the journey to the west conquering the demons

For a movie where a man saves himself from falling by stuffing fingers in another man’s nostrils, “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” is remarkably sophisticated. Writer-director Stephen Chow, whose “Kung Fu Hustle” was one of the past decade’s best films, returns from a five-year hiatus with an epic story of spiritual enlightenment, framed by the slapstick and sentimentality that have become hallmarks of his  febrile creativity.

A virtual masterpiece of astutely-observed behaviors, combined with intimate knowledge of genre conventions and what the film’s characters would call a little special “something,” “Journey to the West” is an incredibly fun, powerfully meaningful and entirely unique moviegoing experience.

Zhang Wen (“The Guillotines”) plays Xuan Zang, a mop-topped monk in 16 th century China who aspires to be a demon hunter. When a village is besieged by a fishing demon, Xuan intercedes and attempt to “coax the goodness out of him,” but his method proves less effective than that of Miss Duan (Qi Shu), who pummels the creature into submission and sends Xuan off in search of “enlightenment.”

Also: ‘The Green Inferno’ Review: Eli Roth Upends the Cannibal Film

After an encounter with a pig demon reunites the pair, Duan confesses she’s attracted to his selflessness – which doesn’t interest Xuan, who prefers a “higher love” to the base impulses of earthbound romance. Enlisted by his master (Sihan Cheng) to find the Monkey King Sun Wukong (Bo Huang), Xuan soon faces his greatest challenge, as he’s forced make an impossible choice – embrace the more aggressive fighting styles of his fellow demon hunters, ensure the safety of Duan, or ignore the physical world and achieve true enlightenment.

journey-to-the-west03

On the surface, describing such tonal schizophrenia admittedly makes “Journey to the West” seem like an uneven mess, but like “Kung Fu Hustle” and “Shaolin Soccer,” the filmmaker’s latest unfolds like a symphony, full of minor notes and grand movements that are not just compatible but fully cohesive.

Moreover, where other filmmakers often seem to be working against themselves to create compelling drama without sacrificing audience comfort, Chow makes deliberate choices that subvert expectations and give his films a bittersweet resonance. In “Journey,” for example, the village’s battle with the fishing demon ends in multiple deaths, including those of children; notwithstanding the sequence’s condensed homage to the plot of “Jaws,” Chow doesn’t write his way out of such tragedies, communicating the emotional weight of the survivors’ losses. Additionally, their passing punctuates Xuan’s initial failures as a demon hunter, reinforces his larger journey and understatedly introduce the movie’s overarching themes, which suggest that suffering is a necessary catalyst for spiritual epiphanies.

Even without its underlying profundity, however, Chow’s latest is an irresistible roller coaster ride, a wild adventure whose eclectic ensemble makes it as ridiculous as it is meaningful. Xuan’s nobility is as goofy as it is attractive, and his penchant for underestimating opponents supplies the action sequences with both tension and humor, while Duan’s persistence in courting him simultaneously exposes her strengths as a fighter and shortcomings as a seductress. And in general, his ability to undercut the self-seriousness or “importance” of his characters with odd quirks – like the martial arts master whose deadly skill is disguised by a hilariously undersized foot – deconstructs perceptions of authority and humanizes even the most fantastical concepts.

Ultimately, Chow’s latest is a bona fide masterpiece, the triumphant end result of a virtuoso working at the absolute peak of his talents. As a blend of dramatic textures that effortlessly taps into the audience’s emotional core or just a challenging mishmash that tests their emotional flexibility, “Journey to the West” is the most unique and satisfying crowd-pleaser of 2013, precisely because it can please so many different crowds.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons

Visuals are more dazzling than the storytelling in "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons."

Visuals are more dazzling than the storytelling in “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons.” A qualified return to form for Hong Kong hitmaker Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle) after mushy sci-fier “CJ7,” this mostly entertaining action-fantasy-comedy about a demon hunter soars when pyrotechnics take centerstage, but is less successful when the focus switches to words. Nevertheless, “Journey” has gone bananas since its Feb. 7 domestic release and looks certain to crack the $200 million mark and overtake “Lost in Thailand” as the highest grossing Chinese movie. Commercial potential beyond Chinese-speaking auds appears limited. North American release details are pending.

The pic is the umpteenth movie inspired by Wu Cheng-er’s classic 16th century novel “Journey to the West.” The source material about the arrival of Buddhism in China provided the basis for “A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora’s Box” and “A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella,” domestic hits starring Chow as the mischievous Monkey King.

Popular on Variety

With Derek Kwok (“Gallants”) credited as associate director, “Journey” follows a simple pattern of elaborate set-pieces followed by brief pauses for reflection and explanation, not all of which are entirely compelling or convincing.

The first spectacular sequence shows young demon hunter Xuanzang (Wen Zhang) arriving in a fishing village during a gory, “Jaws”-like attack by the fearsome Water Demon. Chow’s knack for mixing suspense and slapstick is impressively displayed as Xuanzang leaps about rickety walkways and see-sawing bridges resembling the board game “Mouse Trap” before rescuing a baby just inches from becoming the creature’s next meal.

In one of several new ideas brought to the old tale by Chow, Kwok and six other credited writers, sensitive Xuanzang reads nursery rhymes to demons in the hope they will reject the dark side and join him as allies in the quest for spiritual enlightenment. His belief is that these beasties were once good-natured humans that suffered terrible injustice, and a lilting lullaby is all it takes to undo the damage. Watched by villagers as his technique restores the Water Demon to his previous human form as Sand Monk (Lee Sheung-ching), Xuanzang’s moment of glory is stolen by the sudden arrival of Duan (Shu Qi, “If You Are the One”), a feisty femme demon hunter with radically different ideas on creature control and a flair for showbiz that the nerdy Xuanzang lacks.

Duan invites herself on Xuanzang’s missions to challenge and change other demons — pig K.L. Hog (Chen Bing-qiang) and Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King (Huang Bo), an especially tricky customer who’s served 500 years of solitary confinement in a remote cave on orders from Buddha himself. While sequences such as Duan using her “Infinite Flying Rings” to disintegrate Hog’s minions at his restaurant-cum slaughterhouse are filled with razzle-dazzle CGI and exciting 3D effects, talk-based segs between showpieces too often lack the nimble scripting and heartwarming charm that distinguishes Chow’s best work, like 2001’s “Shaolin Soccer.”

The main problem is Duan’s wildly enthusiastic attempts to woo Xuanzang despite his avowed devotion to “a greater love” than what she’s offering. Pushing the opposites-attract notion a bit too far, Duan’s repeated declarations of passion for Xuanzang never ring true, and it remains a mystery why she finds him so irresistible. An early sequence showing Duan and her sexy comrade (Chrissie Chau) conspiring to activate Xuanzang’s libido produces chuckles, but variations on the theme prove far less mirthful.

Although Chow does not appear in the movie, his acting style and screen persona are writ large on the main cast. Shu is dynamite as the all-action Duan, Huang amuses as the eccentric Monkey King, and Taiwanese singer Show Lo scores big laughs as Prince Important, a narcissistic rival demon hunter with an entourage of soon-to-be-superannuated female sidekicks.

Where the helmer’s touch works least is the central role of Xuanzang. Mainland thesp Wen does nothing particularly wrong, but his perf as the nervous greenhorn feels Chow-lite, and his narrowly written character is less lovable than he ought to be. It doesn’t help that Wen sports a ghastly “finger-in-the-light-socket” hairdo more fit for a costume party than a serious young seeker of spiritual fulfillment.

The pic is beautifully designed and photographed in predominantly rich earthy tones by lenser Choi Sung-fai (“Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”). The orchestral score by regular Chow collaborator Raymond Wong adds plenty of punch to action sequences, but is slightly overused in the dramatic passages. The rest of the technical work is first class. Things conclude with a set-up for a sequel.

Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons

By Edmund Lee 2013-02-04T00:42:00+00:00

Dirs: Stephen Chow, Derek Kwok. China. 2013. 110mins

Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons

A glorious return to form after the slightly underwhelming CJ7 (2008) and his first ever directorial effort in which he doesn’t also play the lead role, Stephen Chow’s Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons is a thoroughly entertaining action comedy that suggests, a la Woody Allen, a promising new life behind the screen for the actor-director, who found an eager international audience with 2001’s Shaolin Soccer and 2004’s Kung Fu Hustle after having established himself as Hong Kong’s most iconic comedian since the early 1990s.

As is frequently the case for the recent Stephen Chow movies, violence and gore are used occasionally to comical effects.

Those who’re worrying that Chow is on an irreversible retreat into self-congratulatory mode could be in for a surprise: as someone whose image is synonymous with his oeuvre, the actor isn’t even making a notable cameo appearance in his latest film. Serving up a delirious blend of monster movie, romantic comedy and martial arts fantasy, this inventive new take on the classical novel Journey To The West also marks a long-awaited return to the material by Chow, who previously starred as the Monkey King in director Jeff Lau’s now-classic two-part adaptation A Chinese Odyssey (1995).

Clearly structured – and titled – as the first film of a potential movie series, Conquering The Demons opens in mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore on February 7, as well as Taiwan on the following day, to coincide with the Chinese New Year holidays. While international sales should be less affected by the actor’s conspicuous onscreen absence, it remains to be seen if Chinese viewers will respond with the same enthusiasm they showed the Chow-starring comedies of the past.

Although the film is billed as “a Stephen Chow film” that is “produced, directed and written by” him, it is noteworthy that Chow, as a producer, only took up his directorial duties – and the head billing – midway through the production. Conquering The Demons is in fact co-directed by Derek Kwok ( Gallants ), who was initially the sole director – even if his name doesn’t currently appear in the opening credits.

While the film is still peppered with small and unpretentiously bizarre touches of humour that are unquestionably Chow’s own, the introduction of a new creative voice may have contributed to the refreshing dramatic focus here. Unlike seemingly every other movie in Chow’s acting career, which almost always features a bratty anti-hero battling against his underdog status, the protagonist of Conquering The Demons is surprisingly not the spotlight-hogging Monkey King – whose ironically unimpressive image is unveiled at the movie’s final showdown as an awkwardly hilarious sight gag – but a younger Xuan Zang before he makes the titular pilgrimage.

Played by Chinese actor Wen Zhang ( Love Is Not Blind , The Sorcerer And The White Snake ) with an endearing balance of determination and humility, the lead role of Xuan Zang barely possesses the bigger-than-life personality that typically defines Chow’s leading roles. As a demon-hunter with minimal martial arts skills, the character is guided only by an unwavering belief in the inherent goodness of every evil being: he strives to awaken the demons’ sense of innocence by singing from his treasured book of 300 Nursery Rhymes .

Aided by the original character Miss Duan (Shu Qi), a beautiful yet totally fierce fellow demon-hunter who’s fallen hopelessly in love with him, Xuan Zang spends the duration of the film consecutively conquering the three demons that will eventually become his famed disciples: a fish demon (which inspires a few Piranha -like sequences), a pig demon (whose exceedingly ugly look leads to a couple of very gross kisses) and a monkey demon aka the Monkey King. With an expected reference to A Chinese Odyssey ’s most famous lines, Xuan Zang becomes a Buddhist monk and finally learns of the significance of ‘greater love’ through his love interest.

As is frequently the case for the recent Stephen Chow movies, violence and gore are used occasionally to comical effects; a malfunctioning blood-splashing device used by a character provides some of the movie’s funniest gags. And though the computer-generated demons, often in the guises of giant animals, are not at their most realistic, they do feel very much at home in a fantasy movie as wacky as Conquering the Demons .

Journey to the West — Conquering the Demons: Film Review

Combine rapidly increasing screen numbers, a voracious appetite for movies, a beloved literary legend and perhaps one of Hong Kong’s most popular actor-directors ever and you’ve got the recipe for a minor cinematic phenomenon. A lot would have to be dreadfully wrong for producer-writer-director Stephen Chow ’s entertaining comedy-fantasy Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons , to flop. And indeed, it has lived up to its potential, earning a massive $190 million in a few weeks in mainland China. Though the film was oddly beaten at home over the key Lunar New Year holiday weekend (by A Good Day to Die Hard of all things) this umpteenth iteration of the Chinese classic is likely to continue its successful streak beyond the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Related Stories

Mubi picks up elizabeth sankey's 'witches' worldwide (exclusive), studio ghibli to receive honorary cannes palme d'or.

JTTW is Chow’s first film in five years, the last being the fatuous and uncharacteristically schmaltzy CJ7 , and it boasts all the hallmarks of a Chow film: the slow development of running jokes and motifs, the wry asides, the everyman background characters that are often hilariously baffled or disbelieving on the viewer’s behalf, the tendency to allow scenes to run on organically. Though the film has more humanity and less of a sharp tongue than Chow has been noted for in the past, it’s undeniably his work (he doesn’t star in the film this time) and audiences and distributors receptive to surprise hits like King of Comedy and the groundbreaking Shaolin Soccer will want to get on the JTTW bandwagon.

The Bottom Line A welcome return to form by Hong Kong favorite Chow, even if it is without the director’s usual bite.

PHOTOS: 10 Highest-Grossing Movies of All Time at the China Box Office

The story kicks off with a stirring opening sequence involving a fake demon hunter, a fake water demon and a Taoist monk (the man that would be Tripitaka) Chen Xuanzang ( Wen Zhang ) dedicated to demon expulsion via love, kindness and a book of 300 nursery rhymes. Failing to get the job done and strung up for being a hoax, Xuanzang watches helplessly as the real water demon appears and wreaks havoc on a small village. The day is ultimately saved by real-deal Duan ( Shu Qi ) and her Infinity Flying Ring. Despondent at his failure, Xuanzang goes back to his master ( Cheng Sihan ) who tells him his lack of faith was the root of his demon banishing ineptitude. Cue the journey to betterment and wisdom.

Constructed in segments pivoting on encounters with the various demons Xuanzang meets — the opening fish demon, the Gao Family Inn and its Pig Demon proprietor ( Chen Bingqiang ), the closing Five Finger Mountain segment and a run-in with Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King ( Huang Bo ) with short bridging bits — Journey to the West is more picaresque than pure narrative. But Chow and his army of writers manage to hold on to their themes and ideas through each set piece. The central conflict in the film grows from Xuanzang’s very Buddhist quest to honor the greater love for all things under the sun — demons included — and Duan’s more earthly quest for physical and romantic love. Her aggressive pursuit of him makes Xuanzang uneasy, and challenges his already fragile hold on his faith. The film has a dark undercurrent, entertaining and colorful as it is. Chow has no time for unwritten rules that say toddlers can’t die on screen; the Pig Demon’s lair is truly grotesque; and the Monkey King isn’t the impish charmer that has dominated popular culture. Laughs bump up against loss time and again, giving JTTW a more adult edge than may be expected.

STORY: Stephen Chow, China’s Huayi Brothers in Dispute Over ‘Journey to the West’ Profits

But Chow has a stellar cast that can soften the more gruesome elements without losing control of their purpose. Shu ( Three Times ) and Huang ( Crazy Stone ) are the standouts this time around, and help the bland Wen ( The Guillotines ) look stronger than he is. Huang is a proven comic performer but Shu surprises yet again with a nuanced turn that deftly balances the film’s emotional weight with its comic demands. The film’s 3D and CGI is adequate, and though it goes needlessly overboard in the closing segments, for the most part it avoids the effects-as-message trap. Journey to the West may not rank among Chow’s classics, but it’s a crowd-pleaser that also serves as a reminder of what the director can accomplish when he’s on his game.

A 2013 loose reimagination of the Chinese classic Journey to the West directed by Stephen Chow . It contains Chow's trademark mix of drama, kung fu, and slapstick comedy. Taking place before the eponymous journey west, the film shows a younger, less enlightened Tang Sanzang (played by Chinese actor Wen Zhang) as he tries to protect people from demons and learns much about the world. Along the way he meets other demon hunters, learns much about himself, and gets hit. A lot.

This Film Contains Examples Of:

  • Achievements in Ignorance : Duan (played by Shu Qi ) can't read well. So in trying to put back Tang's book of nursery rhymes, she mixed up the words and accidentally created a sutra that summoned the Buddha to strike the Monkey King down.
  • Action Girl : Duan is a very capable fighter, and something of a ladette.
  • Action Prologue : The opening of the film shows Tang helping some villagers fight a fish demon.
  • Action Survivor : Tang has no real useful skills, and tries to take demons on with nothing but a book of nursery rhymes. This causes Duan to fall for him, as she thinks it's incredibly brave.
  • Adaptational Villainy : Unlike most other lighter adaptations of the original novel, the new interpretations of Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing are more or less portrayed as they appear in novel, in terms of the level of the atrocities committed. In Monkey's case, this is a subversion, as he's first introduced claiming that he's reformed, and now a good guy who wants to serve Buddha.
  • And the Adventure Continues : The last shot is the beginning of the Journey to the West .
  • Anguished Declaration of Love : Tang tells Duan he loves her, and always loved her as she lay dying from wounds she took trying to protect him .
  • One of the demon hunters uses animal style kung fu. The animal whose style he's using appears behind him, though when he was first introduced it simply looked like it was a tiger fighting.
  • The Monkey King at one point charges and looks like a giant feral monkey. While he can turn into one, that scene was merely done to represent his ferocity.
  • Bald Mystic : After spending the entire movie with long hair, Tang has his hair ripped off by the Monkey King. It's only in this bald state that he reaches enlightenment and take a level in badass .
  • Batman Gambit : How Sun Wukong tricked Sanzang into removing the actual seal that freed him, which is not far away from how the original character rely on his wits to overcome the odds. Initially, he deliberately put on airs of a suspicious behavior by asking Sanzang to remove some conspicuous object in his space. When Sanzang refused, he raged, which convinced Sanzang that had to be the seal that trapped Wukong for the past 500 years. After further drama and action mostly on Sanzang and Miss Duan's end, Wukong casually requested Sanzang to remove some innocuous looking lotus (The actual seal) so that he can have a better view of the night. Sanzang who by that time had let down his guard, did just that.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game : One demon-hunter attempts to kill the Monkey King by moving like an animal himself. It doesn't work.
  • Bittersweet Ending : Miss Duan (and all the other hunters) are killed by Sun Wukong, but in the process, Tang achieves true enlightenment and binds the Monkey King to Buddha's will, starting his journey of redemption.
  • Bond One-Liner : "It seems the Mighty Foot has stepped on a nail."
  • Bullying a Dragon : When the Monkey King breaks free, the Demon-Hunters who were hunting KL Hog earlier all mock him for his height and his flamboyant dress. Safe to say, none of them survive their battle with him by the end of the fight.
  • Canon Character All Along : The fish demon is actually Sha Wujing
  • Celibate Hero : Tang categorically rejects Duan's advances, stating that he's looking for "greater love," rather than lesser, romantic love. He doesn't change his mind until it's too late.
  • Chekhov's Gun : Duan's flying ring becomes Wukong's Restraining Bolt . Not to mention, the fish demon and KL Hog become Sandy and Piggy respectively .
  • Death of a Child : The little girl from the opening is eaten by the fish demon.
  • Defiant to the End : Even when Buddha casually presses a palm the size of a continent onto the Monkey King , Sun Wukong is too full of rage against him to back down.
  • Did Not Get the Girl : Tang doesn't profess his love for Duan until she's dying. Since Tang doesn't have a girlfriend in the original story, this was bound to happen.
  • Doomed by Canon : Miss Duan didn't show up in the original tale, which takes place after this movie. She dies in the climax.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male : Duan regularly beats and harasses Tang along the movie, but it's all Played for Laughs . When Tang raises his hand to Duan in an emotional moment, everyone freaks out.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male : Duan attempts to trick Tang into having sex with her by getting her people to pretend to be bandits forcing them to have sex. Once Tang learns of the deception, he's angry but ultimately dismisses the matter.
  • Enlightenment Superpower : The Deus ex Machina that saves Tang is triggered by him gaining enlightenment (and a golden glow to boot).
  • Expecting Someone Taller : The demon hunters expected the Monkey King to be taller. He still kills them all.
  • Extremity Extremist : Almighty Foot solely attacks with a grossly oversized foot.
  • The Farmer and the Viper : Sun Wukong repays Tang for unintentionally freeing him by ripping his hair out when he prays (having a personal grudge against the Buddha) and killing and vaporizing Sanzang.
  • Faux Affably Evil : Sun Wukong. Befitting a trickster, of course. When trying to trick Tang, he was pretty helpful and nice, but the second he was freed he became a petty jerkass.
  • Flying Weapon : Prince Important fights by flicking tiny swords, which then become full size and he can control.
  • Improbable Weapon User : KL Hog's weapon of choice is a nine-pronged rake, as it is the in original story.
  • Improbable Infant Survival : The village works together to save the infant in the opening sequence.
  • King Kong Copy : When faced against a summoned Buddha bigger than the planet , the Monkey King takes on the form of a giant gorilla.
  • Make Way for the New Villains : KL Hog is the antagonist for most of the movie. He's easily defeated by the Monkey King even while he's imprisoned, who becomes the final boss.
  • Mama Bear : After her daughter is eaten by the fish demon , the woman from the opening grabs a spear and jumps in the river. She's clearly terrified, but demands the fish give her her daughter back. She just ends up its next meal.
  • Meaningful Rename : Tang is given the Buddhist name Tripitaka at the end of the movie.
  • Mind Hug : Under Tang's direction, instead of imprisoning him again, the Buddha brings the Monkey King to a place of absolute tranquility where he's so overwhelmed by peace and beauty that he loses the will to fight any further.

the journey to the west conquering the demons

  • No-Sell : After achieving True Enlightenment, Tang becomes completely immune to all of demonic Monkey King's attacks.
  • Non-Indicative Title : While there is a trek in a westward direction, the movie takes place before Tripitaka's true journey to the west featured in the novel.
  • Overly Long Gag : One of Prince Important's petal-throwers chastises him, "You should have told me sooner!" about twelve times in a row before the gag is dropped.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse : The Monkey King is smaller than any of his opponents, but is unstoppable.
  • Power of the God Hand : Tang Sanzang manages to defeat the Monkey King by summoning the Buddha himself (who is revealed to be larger than the planet, his hand the size of China itself) using the Buddha Sutra from his reassemble the Nursery Rhyme book, whereupon he crushes Sun Wukong beneath his palm.
  • Prequel : Could be seen as one to Journey to the West , but the original literature does tell the stories of the pilgrims from the beginning, making this more of a re-telling of their origins instead.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad : A rare heroic example with the Hunters, all minor characters with their own trademark. They're all killed by the Monkey King.
  • Rage Against the Heavens : The Monkey King is pissed at Buddha.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can : Five-hundred years ago, Sun Wukong was imprisoned beneath Wuzhi Mountain by the Buddha for the chaos he waged in the Heavens and there he stayed. The seal prevents him from leaving the only way out, the lotus roots snagging him and whipping him if he ever tried, until he achieved enlightenment. After helping imprison KL Hog, he tricks Tang into removing the one lotus flower in the garden above the entrance (the real seal), freeing the Monkey King from his imprisonment.
  • Sequel Hook : The Journey to the West begins!
  • Shout-Out : One famous scene in the movie ( where Buddha becomes the size of a planet and crushes Sun Wukong with his Palm) is direct shout to Asura's Wrath , right down to nearly identical camera angles and character actions, to the point of getting quite a plagiarism controversy when it first premiered in China.
  • Sunken Face : When demons are hit, their faces dent in the shape of the attack.
  • Super-Scream : One of the Monkey King's most common attacks. Interestingly, the attacks aren't just concussive but also can incinerate the target.
  • Superpower Lottery : The Monkey King is supremely strong, can incinerate things with a thought or shout, can shapeshift, and is Nigh-Invulnerable
  • Temporary Love Interest : Like Stephen Chow's original movie adaptations of Journey to the West, Miss Duan dies at the end to complete Tang's character development into a monk.
  • Too Important to Walk : Prince Important insists that he needs to be carried around because walking would make him the same as all the normal peasants.
  • True Sight : Tang sees through the illusions at KL Hog's inn. The audience is first shown a glimpse of the illusion, then what Tang sees.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting : The Monkey King can turn into an ape-like form. Given the source material, he can probably turn into more.
  • The Fish Demon was a man who was mistaken for a kidnapper while rescuing a child and transformed into a demon after the angry villagers killed him and threw his body into the water.
  • KL Hog was murdered by his wife and her handsome lover and then changed into a pig demon after swearing to kill all women who lusted after handsome men.
  • What Happened to the Mouse? : Duan's crew and sister vanish from the movie with no adequate explanation.
  • Yandere : Duan, full stop. She stalks Tang constantly after their first meeting, tries on multiple occasions to blackmail him, and will not under any circumstances accept "no" for an answer.
  • Zombie Advocate : Tang thinks demons can be rehabilitated and calmed through song.

Table of Contents

“Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” is a fascinating film that intertwines elements of action, comedy, and spiritual growth. Directed by Stephen Chow, this cinematic piece revisits the classic Chinese fable with a unique twist, focusing on the journey of Xuan Zang, a novice monk on his path to enlightenment, and his encounters with demons, each representing different challenges and lessons.

Introduction to the Tale

The story begins with Xuan Zang, portrayed as a well-meaning but inexperienced monk, who believes that demons can be transformed into benevolent beings. This idealistic approach sets him on a collision course with both the demons he aims to convert and the demon hunters who seek to destroy them. Among these hunters is Duan, a skilled and determined female hunter who takes a liking to Xuan Zang, despite his rebuffs due to his pursuit of a “greater love” that transcends physical attraction.

The Demons and Their Defeat

Throughout the film, Xuan Zang encounters several formidable demons, including the Water Demon, Pig Demon, and the most challenging of them all, the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. Each demon presents a unique challenge, showcasing Xuan Zang’s growth from naivety towards a deeper understanding of his spiritual journey. The Monkey King, in particular, poses the greatest threat, leading to a climactic battle that tests Xuan Zang’s faith and resolve.

The Climactic Battle and Enlightenment

The ending of the film is both dramatic and enlightening. After a series of trials and tribulations, Xuan Zang’s true test comes with his encounter with the Monkey King, who after being released, kills Duan, the demon hunter who had become Xuan Zang’s protector and unrequited love interest. In her death, Duan plays a crucial role in Xuan Zang’s journey, as her sacrifice leads him to achieve true enlightenment. He realizes the profound message within the nursery rhyme book Duan had reassembled, which ultimately helps him to summon Buddha and defeat the Monkey King.

Journey to the West

In the aftermath, Xuan Zang is tasked with traveling to the west to fetch the Buddhist sutras, signifying his readiness to embark on a new journey of spiritual enlightenment. The transformation of the demons into his disciples, including Sun Wukong, marks the beginning of the legendary journey to the west, with the imagery of Duan appearing to Xuan Zang across the desert, symbolizing her lasting impact on his spiritual journey.

Reflections on the Film

“Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” blends slapstick humor with profound spiritual insights, embodying Stephen Chow’s distinctive style that combines deranged CGI effects, non-sequitur humor, and a journey of transformation. The film navigates through various tones, from comedy to serious filmmaking, showcasing Chow’s ambition to create something meaningful while still catering to his audience’s expectation for the absurd and zany, especially during the Lunar New Year festivities.

This film not only revisits a beloved classic with a fresh perspective but also sets a new standard for Chinese-language films, achieving remarkable success at the box office and receiving critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling and dynamic action sequences.

Things To Do

Entertainment, entertainment | luke borchelt’s pursuit of country music glory started in anne arundel county, the annapolis native and former rapper has found his true calling making 'crab country'.

the journey to the west conquering the demons

Luke Borchelt used to be a rapper.

In 2016, he released the tongue-in-cheek, braggadocious “Annapolis Anthem,” an infectious hip-hop record about his hometown. His rap moniker was Airbud, a nickname he picked up on the lacrosse field at Annapolis Area Christian School thanks to the flowing blond locks that streamed out the back of his helmet.

But while the song has picked up hundreds of thousands of digital streams since its release and gave Borchelt, now 26, a semblance of local fame, he has moved on entirely from the genre to what he views as his true calling: country music.

Now, his hair is cut short beneath a camo Maryland hat. He strums a guitar instead of crafting 16-bar verses, remaking himself as a country artist who has had a rocky road to get to where he is at present – in pursuit of stardom.

His journey from rapping about “crab cakes and Old Bay and croquet and arrogance,” to making country tunes like “Every Rain” that asks if “maybe I should start going back to church, quit drinking, or maybe I’m cursed,” is one of self-discovery and healing. When Borchelt tells his story, he often starts at his lowest point – living at home, working odd jobs and wondering if he would ever be able to accomplish more.

“I graduated college in the spring of 2019 and that winter I was home living with my parents in this rock-bottom place,” he said in an interview in mid-March. “I decided I had to do something because I couldn’t just be roofing houses and building decks and landscaping for the rest of my life – it wasn’t fun.”

Borchelt was born in Annapolis and raised in Riva. An only child to Ben and Cindy Borchelt, faith was a cornerstone of his upbringing and still informs many of the decisions he makes today. His friends describe him as the type to make anyone feel welcome, a trait that has defined him since he was young. He speaks slowly and with intention, choosing his words carefully.

While Borchelt loved sports, art and other pastimes, the genesis of a music career started early when he heard a rap song for the first time. Growing up, he was allowed to watch PBS, Maryland Public Television and the Country Music Channel.

“I heard ‘ This is Why I’m Hot ,’ by Mims and I was like, ‘Bro, this is crazy,’” he said, chuckling.

Soon, the Annapolis Area Christian School choir member and 2015 graduate had an iPod filled with hip-hop. Of course, only the censored versions of the songshis parents monitored as he downloaded them. Or so they thought.

“When he was in middle school, we discovered a pretty large” playlist, Cindy said, before Ben interjected, “REALLY large. …”

“With explicit music on it,” she laughed. Needless to say, that didn’t go over well in the Borchelt household.

Sometime after graduating, Borchelt said he was worn thin after years of trying to make it in the hip-hop industry, ultimately deciding that he wasn’t making music for the right reasons. He decided to move back to New York City, home of King’s College, the second of two small Christian universities he attended and the one where he earned his degree. He got a job working at an up-and-coming fashion brand.

During this time, he had given up on music after releasing “Medusa,” an indie rock album under his Airbud moniker in December 2020. The most successful song from that album, “When You Wake Up,” has garnered more than 1.3 million plays on Spotify.

“I felt like I was doing music to be cool, and I wanted to feel like it was my calling, not that I was doing it just for my self [image],” he said.

He didn’t play again until the summer of 2022. Earlier that year, he had a realization, after some prayer and hard work, that he was meant for the music industry.

“I decided I was going to get serious about music,” he said. “This is what I am supposed to do with my life.”

Gillespie/Staff photo)

The first step was learning guitar. Singing has always come naturally to him, as it did to his father and grandfather who also anchored their church choirs with the deep Borchelt voice. But Luke decided that it was time to challenge himself.

“I usually like to do things that come easy to me,” he said. “So, I locked myself in my room and decided I was going to figure out guitar.”

After months of work, he experienced a creative awakening.

“The songs just started pouring out,” he said.

The first song he wrote would become one of his most popular singles, “Same Old Square,” which tells the story of how he would take girls on dates by driving between four stop signs in the small Indiana town where he first attended college. That was his way of skirting the strict rules of the evangelical university.

He didn’t release this song, or any others, for a while. Borchelt said he needed to focus on his craft before introducing this side of himself to the world.

After leaving the fashion industry, he took a job with Mercy Chefs, a humanitarian organization that visits the sites of natural disasters and prepares hot meals for victims.

Craig Wishart, a Severna Park High School graduate, met Luke when they were in college. They became fast friends and worked together at the fashion brand in New York and for Mercy Chefs.

“It gave both of us a purpose,” Wishart said of working with natural disaster victims. “And I think it also showed us how good our lives are.”

Borchelt’s first trip was to a Western Kentucky town wrecked by a tornado. His group distributed lasagna, salads, vegetables and other food.

homes,” he said.”]

“They couldn’t get me to leave. I stayed for 12 days,” he said. “It’s as much my calling as music is.”

It’s not just Borchelt and his parents who believe this career is his calling. The first time Joe Putnam heard Borchelt’s music, he knew he had a star. Putnam is the co-founder and COO of Grey Area Music, a label based in Nashville. He listens to new artists for a living and has heard hundreds of burgeoning acts during his tenure as a record executive.

“We heard his music and said, ‘Holy crap, who is this guy?’” Putnam said. “The vocals are as good as the writing, and the writing is just insane.”

Borchelt signed to Grey Area and another label Droptine Music in February, and also has a songwriting deal with Sony. He currently has close to 80,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and is on a run of releasing singles that he hopes will lead to more industry attention and radio plays.

He takes occasional trips to Nashville, Los Angeles and other cities around the country where he performs at small venues for crowds that often end up begging him for one more song.

One of the Nashville executives that Borchelt has been introduced to has coined a unique name for his style of music.

“Where we’re from is such a unique place. I make music for people who grew up on the water,” Borchelt said, smiling. “One of the guys in Nashville calls my music ‘Crab Country.’”

For now, he is still based at his parents’ house in Riva. He loves where he is from and joked that he is a mainstay at Stan and Joe’s on West Street.

While he eventually decided big city life wasn’t for him, Borchelt credits his time in New York City for teaching him how to stand up for himself professionally, and also for giving him his style.

He dresses like a southern dad who does most of his shopping at Goodwill, but also knows his way around the stores in the ritzy New York neighborhood of SoHo. In his promotional photos, he wears a mix of camo sweats, a Carhartt vest and Jordans. Around his neck hangs a gold chain with a cross.

Before he could take on the country music industry, there were two other demons that Borchelt had to conquer to get himself back on track: heartbreak and alcohol.

A breakup after college “crushed him for like a year,” Ben Borchelt said.

Camera operator Nate Pesce, left, director Rick Barnwell, center and director of photography John Grove work out the shots before shooting begins. “When he came back home after that he was not himself,” Cindy Borchelt said.

Borchelt said he coped by drinking.

“I realized that drinking was a symptom of a problem,” he said. “And the problem was that I hated myself. I felt fake and I wanted this music thing to happen for me without any hard work.”

A conversation with Garrett Atkinson, Borchelt’s engineer since his initial days recording as Airbud, helped turn things around. Atkinson encouraged him to rely on his faith.

Atkinson said the biggest change he saw in the music Borchelt made when he was known as Airbud to the music he makes now is that he doesn’t seem to be trying as hard, it just comes to him.

“The music he is making now just feels effortless,” he said. “We were sort of pushing against the grain trying to create something [with Airbud].  It was cool in the moment, but it wasn’t exactly what he was fully comfortable doing, what he fully felt like himself doing.”

Borchelt said that he will always look back fondly on his time as Airbud, and has no plans to take that music off the internet. For one, he wants the people who enjoy it to still be able to listen to it. But most important, he wants to preserve his entire journey.

“I don’t take myself too seriously, and I’m proud of [that music],” he said. “I’ll never take those songs away or stop [singing] them.”

Warren Russell, a touring guitar player and music producer, said Borchelt’s evolution from rap to indie to country was organic, never something that was consciously decided. Two years ago, the pair tried making country music.

“As it was happening, we would joke about how I’m not necessarily a country producer, but I’m making country music,” said Russell, a Severna Park High School graduate who now lives in Los Angeles.

Borchelt’s unique musical journey only added to his mystique, Putnam said.

“When he was a rapper, he sampled a lot of unique lo-fi beats and had some really cool songs,” he said. “It was just so obvious that he was smart, and he was trying to do [something] and say something.”

Jim Catino, the head of Droptine Music, has been on hand for the genesis of A-list country acts during his career, including superstars Kane Brown and Maren Morris. Borchelt has a chance to add his name to that list.

“He can be as big as any artist that’s out there right now,” Catino, a former Sony executive, said. “His music has that compelling feeling and unique identity. The first time I heard him was like the first time I heard Kane or Maren.”

For Catino, it’s impressive that Borchelt has found his niche after trying something new.

“I just always circle back to the fact that he has his identity,” he said. “And that he writes his songs by himself. That makes him [unique].”

Other local talent have helped Borchelt in recent years including Jackson Dean , the Odenton-born country artist nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award last year.

Borchelt also credits musician Earl from Yonder , an Anne Arundel County native, for letting him open for him at a show at Metropolitan Lounge in downtown Annapolis, Borchelt’s first live performance. Cindy recalled Luke earnestly asking her to help sell merch to the small crowd of local fans.

As he continues to gain momentum, Borchelt stays grounded by keeping his loved ones close.

Among those important figures is Joi Jackson, a music industry professional whom Borchelt calls his manager. Jackson sees herself as more of an adviser figure to the young Marylander.

“I would say that [Borchelt] comes from a good stock. He’s raised by incredibly wonderful people,” she said. “He doesn’t take things for granted. He listens to people’s advice. He’s just a deeply caring and considerate person.”

One of the most important things to Borchelt is staying true to the area that raised him. He grew up listening to CMT but still plays Maryland-based rapper Big Flock in the car on occasion. He has met people in the industry from every corner of the country and hopes he can be the one who gets big enough to give Maryland the shine he says it truly deserves.

Borchelt has said plenty about what he hopes to give back to others through his career, from his parents and friends to his audience. But as for what he hopes he gets out of it, the answer is simple: Borchelt wants to be the world’s biggest artist who lives on a 100-acre farm in Davidsonville and spends his time making music and pouring his resources back into Anne Arundel County.

For some, this might be a reach. For Luke Borchelt, this feels right on schedule.
