ARIZONA TRAVEL BALL

Arizona Travel Ball (ATB) is a select club Baseball organization located in Glendale, Arizona. ATB was founded in 2015 for the sole purpose of becoming the state’s premier organized baseball program. Our organization consists of multiple youth select baseball teams comprised of players from all over the Phoenix area.

ATB is a program for serious baseball players who want to compete and develop their skills day in and day out. To achieve this, we believe in competing at the highest level in all that we do. It is the standard of our program that on the diamond, in the classroom, and around the community, no one will compete harder. Discipline, teamwork, perseverance, passion, and pride are at the forefront of all that ATB stands for.

To provide Arizona youth baseball players with the opportunities and instruction needed to become elite athletes and successful adults.

Earlier this week, when both Baseball America and D1Baseball listed Arizona in their projected NCAA Tournament fields, it almost felt like they did so because they had to include at least three or four Pac-12 schools. Almost like a pity inclusion.

Following a second consecutive conference series sweep, the Wildcats are starting to look like a team that deserves to make the postseason.

The UA beat Cal 7-3 on Sunday afternoon for its seventh consecutive victory and eighth in the last nine games. It was also the seventh straight win in Pac-12 play, keeping Arizona tied for first place at the halfway point of the conference schedule.

Arizona (17-13, 10-5) followed the same script it has throughout much of the win streak by pairing another great starting pitching performance with timely hitting. Clark Candiotti , who tossed a complete game last week against UCLA, allowed two runs over five innings after having his start moved back a day to give him more time to recover from an illness.

Candiotti struck out six to improve to 3-1, and he turned over a 5-2 lead to the bullpen where the quartet of Casey Hintz, Jaeden Swanberg, Kyler Heyne and Tony Pluta struck out five (three by Heyne) and allowed just one run on five hits.

The pen also didn’t issue a walk, nor did Candiotti, the second consecutive walkless game for the Wildcats’ staff. That hadn’t happened since the first two games of the 2021 NCAA regionals, and the streak extends to the seventh inning of Friday’s 10-inning win with the last 87 opposing batters failing to draw a free pass.

As for the UA lineup, it cranked out 11 hits with four players getting two. That included freshman Andrew Cain , who drove in two from the No. 8 hole after having only three hits in 23 at-bats entering the game.

The Wildcats, who are 7-7 in true road games after going 4-14 last season, finish up a 4-game California swing with a nonconference matchup Monday at 12 p.m. at Stanford. They return home Friday to host Louisiana Tech for three nonconference games.

People travel to Oklahoma for eclipse from as far as Australia and India

IDABEL, Okla. ( KSLA /Gray News) — People from all parts of the globe came to the southeast Oklahoma town of Idabel to experience the Great American Eclipse’s path of totality.

Retired science teacher and eclipse expert Glenn Hughes, of Sydney, Australia, was originally planning to watch from Dallas, but came to Idabel at the last minute due to the fog.

“It’s going to be mind blowing. It’s like someone goes, ‘Bang!’, and the lights turn off. The cars will have to turn their headlights on, streetlights are going to come on, and if it’s cloudy, it’s going to be even darker than usual,” Hughes, who’s seen eight eclipses in his lifetime, said before Monday’s event.

He’s been interested in eclipses since he was 8 years old in Australia.

“You have to wait to see it if you’ve never seen one. It’s just amazing how the lights go out,” Hughes added.

Hughes’ grandsons, Freddy and Zack Beck, also of Sydney, Australia, were with him.

“A long journey. There was quite a bit of panic in the car from Dallas, where we were visiting our grandparents,” Freddy Beck said.

“I’m looking forward to when it’s totality,” Zach Beck said.

One man came to Idabel from India, via San Diego and Dallas.

“I’m from a farmer’s family, and the ranches and the houses are so beautiful here,” he remarked. “My daughter was asking me to purchase something!”

He said he has seen both solar and lunar eclipses throughout his lifetime.

“The total atmosphere is totally enchanted by this eclipse. So many cars, and families and small children. And there are very big binoculars and machinery they’re using to cover the eclipse,” he said. “This is very encouraging to me, also. I have taken a few clips and I’m going to show the eclipse to my friends so that they can also get encouragement.”

Malin, another visitor from India, landed in Dallas on Sunday, but wound up in Idabel. He’s seen many eclipses across the world and gathered information on this one for eight years.

“I am expecting people literally cheering. They go crazy,” Malin said.

“The temperature drops at least 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. I have seen it. It drops. Birds start chirping, going back to the nest, something like that.”

March Madness 2024: UConn's flight to Final Four in Arizona delayed due to mechanical issues with plane

After multiple extended delays, the uconn men's basketball team landed in arizona at 3:12 a.m. local time.

The No. 1 overall seed Connecticut Huskies, who are beating teams by nearly 28 points per game the past two weekends, finally found their toughest opponent so far in this tournament: airline travel. After more than eight hours of delays,  UConn 's men's basketball team finally took off from Windsor Locks, Connecticutm at 1:33 a.m. Thursday morning, sources on the plane texted to CBS Sports as the aircraft was speeding down the runway at Bradley Airport.

The team plane touched down in Arizona at 6:12 a.m. ET/3:12 a.m. PT.

The Huskies were initially supposed to be wheels up by 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday, but got delayed due to mechanical issues with the plane they were scheduled, UConn coach Dan Hurley told CBS Sports earlier in the day.

The NCAA oversees and handles all travel for all teams in both the men's and women's NCAA Tournaments. The plane UConn was supposed to be on was coming in from Kansas City but ran into multiple technical troubles that prevented it from leaving on time, Hurley said. 

" You know what, it was nice" a smiling Hurley said Thursday  "You know what, a lot of thoughts because I've had a lot of time to think just in a stationary situation. I think what goes through your mind once you're done kind of complaining and cursing and muttering, you just start saying to yourself like you don't really deserve to show entitlement. Such an honor to get a chance, once-in-a-lifetime experience to play in a Final Four, coach in a Final Four; that once that kind of edge wore off, lucky to be here. We're lucky to get an opportunity to come play in the Final Four. 

"Who doesn't deal with problems with the airlines? I mean, people deal with it during the holidays. It's something that you just got to get through. But it sucked."

Hurley told CBS Sports that the crew assigned to the flight would max it outs allowable work hours, per FAA guidelines. There was no backup flight crew to take UConn to Arizona. After scouring all backup plans and planes, UConn's earliest option to get to the Final Four was via a smaller plane (that would still bring the entire team and staff) and was flown in from Cincinnati. 

After CBS Sports broke the story, the NCAA said in a statement it was working to resolve UConn's travel delay as quickly as possible. 

"Due to mechanical issues with the original aircraft, UConn men's basketball team is experiencing a delay and is now projected to depart at approximately 11:30 p.m. ET," the statement said. "In conjunction with the school and charter airlines, the NCAA worked to develop several options for travel alternatives to Phoenix. We are very disappointed that UConn will arrive later than anticipated and it's unfortunate the team's travel experience has been impacted."

The flight wound up taking off two hours later than was planned — and even 45 minutes later than the initial scenario of 12:45 a.m. ET. 

The school had to trim its travel party, per a UConn source, with the intention of not having to stop for a refuel in order to fly directly to Phoenix as quickly as possible.

The Huskies are going to get to Arizona on an adjusted sleep schedule, but still with plenty of time to spare before Thursday's scheduled afternoon media availability. As of Wednesday night in Arizona, UConn was scheduled to arrive at State Farm Stadium on Thursday shortly before noon local/3 p.m. ET. 

All other teams got to Arizona without issue. Alabama and Purdue  flew in Tuesday evening. NC State landed Wednesday afternoon. 

UConn is scheduled to play Alabama on Saturday at approximately 8:49 p.m. ET/5:49 local in Glendale on TBS/TNT/truTV.

Baseball Sweeps Bears For Fourth-Straight

• Ryan Campos' third-inning walk extended his active reached base streak to 38 games dating back to last season. He has now reached base in 108-of-117 career games (92.3 percent) with the Sun Devils.
• Mario Demera led the Sun Devils with a .417 average in the series on 5-of-12 hitting, adding six RBIs (second on the team) and playing errorless ball at third base on the weekend.
• Cal entered the weekend Top-60 in the country in ERA (4.66) and Top-50 with 10.9 strikeouts per game. The Sun Devils sent them home with a 10.12 ERA for the weekend while striking out a grand total of just 16 times (5.3 per game).
• This season, ASU has posted 23 3+ run innings and 15 4+ run innings after the team's six-run fourth today.
• After struggling following his return from that surgery, Nick McLain has had a monster seven-game stretch, batting 11-of-27 (.407) with eight extra base hits for a .963 slugging percentage, leading the team with 15 RBIs - four more than any other player. He has three homers, four doubles and a triple in the stretch. He added an RBI single to that tally today, posting a .515 OBP during the tear.
• The Sun Devils have trailed at some point in 29 of the team's last 35 victories dating back to last season. They have trailed in all but two of their 14 wins this season. 
• At the midway point of the regular season, ASU broke even at 10-10 in games decided by three runs or less this season. It won 18 such games a season ago. 
• Cal's first inning run marked the sixth consecutive game that ASU's opponent scored in the first inning, dating back to the opening game of the Washington State series on Mar. 22. ASU rallied from that deficit in all four games this week. 
• Cal had been absolutely deadly in innings 7-9 all season and the first two games of this weekend were no exception. Cal entered the day having outscored opponents 69-40 in those frames and had nine runs this weekend in Innings 7-9 before being held scoreless in those frames today. It was just the fifth time in 25 games this season that Cal didn't score at least one run in Innings 7-9. 
• Harris Williams' first inning walk tied him with Nick McLain for second-most on the team with 18. 
• Eamonn Lance homered again in just his second start of the year after doing so on Friday as well.
• Saturday's victory secured ASU's first sweep of the season and first since April 6-8 against Washington State last season.
