Sky Mirror

About Sky Mirror

Named after its mirror-like reflection of the sky.

Sky Mirror is a mystery island that will only emerge for several days every month: During the 1st and 15th of a lunar month, as well as 4 days before or after these dates. It is also dubbed the Salar de Uyuni of Malaysia, after the similar natural wonder in Bolivia.

Before Sky Mirror was unearthed by a group of travel enthusiasts earlier in 2016, it is almost the best kept secret within the town, only known to the locals. Having got to know about the “mystery island” from the fisherman, they decided to explore and what they discovered was a piece of stunning land that flawlessly reflected the sky. These are the pioneers of the island’s discovery, who also named the place Sky Mirror. After a few returns for observations, they stimulated the idea of uplifting the town’s image by promoting the newfound gem as a must-visit tourism spot.

Kuala Selangor is located northwest of Selangor, Malaysia, at the estuary of the Selangor River. To travel to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, you can go by car, by bus, or by tour.

Car is the most convenient means of transport if you want to travel to Kuala Selangor from KL.

The reason is that Grab is very common in Kuala Selangor town, thus, it’s inconvenient to get around the town if you don’t have your own car. In addition, you can only see fireflies and blue tears in the evening (the tour ends at 8 pm), if you want to go back to KL right after that, then driving your car is always the best option. Otherwise, you have to stay in Kuala Selangor for a night.

If you want to rent a private car (with a driver) to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, c ontact me via Whatsapp +60 149.776.712 (Mai) or my Instagram for the best price 💸 .

If you have more time to explore, then you can consider a bus.

From KL, you catch bus No.100 operated by Selangor Omnibus which departs from HAB Lebuh Pudu (Pudu Street bus hub). It will take around 2 hours to reach Kuala Selangor.

Be noticed that buses take a longer time, have low frequency, and do not run at night.

To be honest, transportation is a huge concern for non-local Malaysians as public transportation is not convenient in Kuala Selangor. Thus, it’s a good choice to join a tour, especially for foreign tourists.

There is a tour that includes a round-trip transfer from & to Kuala Lumpur City Center, admission to blue tears, sky mirror, eagle feeding, fireflies, and Sekinchan (all are optional).

Here is the link to book this tour: Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur.

A sky mirror is a seabed that has a mirror-like reflection of the sky when exposed during low tide. It lasts for only 3-4 hours and a few days per month. Therefore, when you book a sky mirror tour, the tour operator will provide you with different timings and dates to choose from.

To see the sky mirror, the only way to go is by speedboat. It takes around 30 minutes to drive from the Kuala Selangor jetty. Departure time is around 10 am – 11 am.

Eagle feeding

In Kuala Selangor, you can witness red-backed sea eagles in Pasir Penambang – near the estuary of the Selangor River. There will be around 30 eagles flying around, together with a flock of small birds. The scene is spectacular, especially during sunset. DO NOT MISS this exciting activity when traveling to Kuala Selangor.

When the sky is dark, fireflies start to glow along the banks of the Selangor River in order to find mates. There are thousands of fireflies flying around which produce a fascinating scene in the dark.

Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park in Kuala Selangor is known as the largest firefly colony in the world. Therefore, it is a must-visit attraction when you travel to Kuala Selangor.

Blue tears are a natural nighttime phenomenon caused by a glowing microscopic creature called Dinoflagellates. Normally, you will find blue tears across the seashore, but in Kuala Selangor, you can witness it on a speedboat in the estuary of the Selangor River.

The best time to see blue tears in Kuala Selangor is on the first 3 days of the lunar month. It is said that during these days, dark skies and high tides can make it clearer to see blue tears.

Bukit Malawati

kuala-selangor-bukit-malawati

Bukit Malawati was a hill that houses the remains of the Kota Malawati fort, a lighthouse, and the Selangor Historical Museum.

The fort was founded by Sultan Ibrahim in the late 1700s, but it was captured by the Dutch and renamed Fort Altingburg. In the 1800s, it was devastated during the Selangor Civil War.

In 1794, the Dutch built a lighthouse and named it Altingsburgh.

Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum was originally an Official Residence of the Kuala Selangor District Office. The museum tells the history of Kuala Selangor since its establishment with 7 sections displaying all the relics and pictures of the past.

In addition, visitors also come to Bukit Malawati to see the silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques . You can buy food (such as peanuts) to feed them as well.

Note: During weekdays, you can drive your own car to the hill. But at the weekend, it’s not allowed, you will need to take a tram instead. The Tram ticket is RM5/adult and RM3/child. The ticket counter is at the gate.

During my Kuala Selangor trip, I had seafood in 2 restaurants:

River View Seafood Restaurant:

  • This restaurant is a pretty well-known halal restaurant
  • It has a great view of the river
  • The taste was okay, and acceptable

Sin Hai Ping Seafood:

  • This is a more affordable option, and I was really impressed with their crab porridge – fresh and sweet.
  • The staff was attentive and friendly as well.

Besides that, I also had some really yummy bak kut teh at Hai Ka Lang restaurant. You can definitely consider going there as well.

Day 1: Sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, blue tears

We booked a boat tour package from D’tour company which includes all these activities. Here you can see the itinerary of the package.

Schedule for 4in1 Combo day tour.

  • Sky Mirror: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • ATV Experience: 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM
  • Eagle: Around 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Fireflies+Blue Tears: 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM

Around 8.45 pm will finish the tour.

Day 2: Bukit Malawati – Feed monkeys and visit Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum.

NOTE: It’s entirely possible to squeeze the itinerary for a day trip. You can visit Bukit Malawati either in the early morning or around noon. However, it can be a little tiring. Personally, I took a 2-day-1-night trip to Kuala Selangor because I wanted to have a relaxing weekend trip.

You can book either 1 single activity or the whole package. There are different packages offered too, but I highly recommend you to book the full package including sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, and blue tears (normally, 5 minutes ATV for free is included in this package).

You can book it in 3 ways:

Book directly with a tour operator online

You can find trustworthy tour operators’ contacts and book with them in advance.

Personally, I saw an advertisement for D’tour and messaged them on WhatsApp. They gave us the jetty’s address and itinerary of the tour. Once we arrived at the jetty, we showed them the booking and got the ticket (I will give more feedback about D’tour in the next part).

Book at the point

When I reached Kuala Selangor, I also saw a lot of signboards advertising those tours as well. Basically, you can just book directly with them. However, it’s not suggested during holidays or peak seasons.

Book online via Klook

Klook is a reliable online travel agent that offers good prices for customers. When comparing the price on Klook and the one provided by the tour operator, I saw that some tours are cheaper, some are a little more expensive, but the difference is not much.

Below are some trustworthy tour packages that you can consider:

  • Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears: link to book
  • Sky mirror: link to book
  • Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur (Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears, Sky mirror, and Sekinchan): link to book

kuala-selangor-sky-mirror-package- D'tour

In general, I feel like most of the operators in Kuala Selangor offered the same service, same quality, and same price. As long as the company is reliable, you can go ahead and book with them.

Specifically, here is some of my feedback about D’tour company:

  • Price: The whole package (sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, blue tears, ATV) costs RM130/adult and RM100/child. This is an average price compared to other operators.
  • Timing: They provided us with a schedule, but the real departure time was 15-20 minutes for all activities. We always came earlier and had to wait at the jetty for quite a long time. It was boring because there was nothing else to do at the jetty as well. Waste of time.
  • Experience: The boat is old and a little bit dirty. But it’s fine because the tour is cheap. So I get what I pay for.
  • Inclusion: They provide a life jacket and light snacks after visiting the sky mirror.

Mosquitos spray

Be noticed that when you see fireflies, the boat will come closer to the bush and there are a lot of mosquitos there. So do prepare insect spray.

Sunscreen is essential when you visit the sky mirror. It’s quite hot and sunny there, especially at noontime.

If you don’t want to make your shoes dirty, then bring a flip-flop, especially when visiting the sky mirror.

Batu Caves – Murugan Statue: interesting fact, history, how to get there?

Kuala Lumpur travel guide. Is it expensive in Kuala Lumpur?

Though it’s just a small town, Kuala Selangor offers a lot of natural phenomena that will definitely amaze you.

In addition, traveling to Kuala Selangor is very cheap as well. We spent around RM300/person for 2 days 1 night including the tour package, food, hotel, etc.

Therefore, there is no reason to skip this fascinating hidden destination when you come to Malaysia.

Above is all you need to know about the Kuala Selangor trip including how to go from KL to Kuala Selangor, places to visit in Kuala Selangor, some recommended seafood restaurants, etc.

Hope you find it helpful. Thanks for reading!

About Fireflies in Kuala Selangor

Watching fireflies in Kuala Selangor has become a popular tourist activity in recent years, but the history of this phenomenon dates back much further.

Fireflies have been present in Kuala Selangor for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that locals realized their potential as a tourist attraction. According to a boatman in Kampung Kuantan fireflies park, watching fireflies along the Selangor Rivers started by scientists. At that time, local and foreign scientists came to study fireflies and had to engage local villages, Mr. Jamaluddin, to help them navigate the Selangor rivers.

The local tourists started to visit Kuala Selangor only after scientists declared Kuala Selangor Fireflies among the biggest in the world after the fireflies in the Amazon rainforest. At that time, a group of fishermen in Kampong Kuantan began to take tourists out on their boats at night to see the fireflies along the Selangor River.

The Kuala Selangor fireflies tours quickly became popular, and more locals began offering similar tours over the years. In 1985, the Selangor state government, with the cooperation of Tenaga National Berhad, decided to set up a proper boat jetty in  Kampung Kuantan. In 1988, another boat jetty in Bukit Belimbing started its operation. Today, four tour operators in Kuala Selangor offer firefly-watching tours, and the area has become known as one of the best places in the world to see these fascinating insects.

Why So Many Fireflies in Kuala Selangor?

The Selangor Rivers are home to a substantial firefly population that thrives on the nectar provided by the Berembang and Sago Tree, which serves as a primary food source for adult fireflies. The firefly’s life cycle commences with the female depositing an egg in the muddy ground following mating, after which it takes roughly 15 to 20 days for the eggs to metamorphose into larvae. The larvae’s primary sustenance is snails, and they employ mandibles to secrete a toxic substance to kill them. After a period of two to three months, the larvae enter the pupa phase, which lasts for nine to twelve days before the emergence of fireflies. The fireflies are diminutive, measuring only 6mm in size, and can survive for up to three months.

Why and How Fireflies Produce the Light?

Kuala Selangor is home to three distinct species of fireflies, namely Pteroptyx Tener, Pteroptyx Valida, and Pteroptyx Malaccae. Pteroptyx Tener is the largest of these species and boasts a unique ability to synchronize light emissions. The bioluminescence responsible for light production occurs via a chemical reaction involving five key components: calcium, adenosine triphosphate, substrate luciferin, enzyme luciferase, and oxygen. However, as these chemicals are contained within the fireflies’ abdomens, Nitric Oxide is a key mediator, allowing oxygen to enter.

Fireflies use their light for communication and mating purposes. Males fly around and emit flashes of light to attract females, who respond with their own flashes of light. Each firefly species has its own distinctive flash pattern, allowing them to identify and mate with individuals of the same species. The breathtaking sight of thousands of fireflies simultaneously emitting light is an unforgettable spectacle.

Best Time to Watch Fireflies

May, June, July, and August tend to experience increased tourist traffic, particularly from foreign visitors. Meanwhile, local tourists prefer to visit firefly park during school holidays and weekends. For a more amazing experience, weekdays are recommended for a fireflies tour.

Watching fireflies in Kuala Selangor are available throughout the year. However, visitors wishing to see the fireflies in their full glory should aim to visit during the evenings when they are most active. This is typically between 7.45 and 10 pm when the fireflies are most luminous. During this time, the fireflies will be seen in their thousands, lighting up and creating a truly breathtaking sight.

Best Way to See Fireflies

Factors  impacting fireflies visibility.

Several factors may impact the visibility of fireflies:

  • Weather conditions : Heavy rainfall, strong winds, or excessive lightning can impact the fireflies’ ability to light up.
  • Human disturbance : Loud noises, bright lights, and other forms of human disturbance can impact the fireflies and make them less active.
  • Seasonal fluctuations : The number of fireflies may fluctuate based on the season, with peak populations appearing at different times throughout the year.

It’s important to note that the Kuala Selangor fireflies tour operators may not guarantee the visibility of fireflies on any given tour.

Just returned from my very nice Firefly tour with Matthew => Hotel pick-up, Batu Caves, temples, monkey feeding, delicous seafood dinner as well as the firefly tour => all worked well! Highlights were the monkeys in hand distance and of course the firefly boat trip (a very nice experience). Matthew did everything to provide me a perfect afternoon!

Mr Anuar was very responsive, texted him several time before we arrived in KL and he replied quickly. We had Mr Sundram for both Malacca and Fireflies tours. We had a private tour, just like our Malacca one. He made sure we are not hungry/thirsty, stopped for toilet breaks along the highway. We went up the Batu Caves, then fed the monkeys at fort Melawati, delicious seafood dinner by the river and gorgeous sunset! in the dark, we rode a row boat to marvel at the fireflies by the mangroves! Very memorable and worth it! Thanks Anuar and Mr Sundram!

The thought that Anuar puts into his tours shows his commitment to ensuring his guests have the best possible experience. Anuar is a great communicator and kept in touch with us about our excursion and met us promptly at the arranged pick up point. He handled everything - entry tickets, bottled chilled water, insect repellent, umbrellas and meal changes (for smallest child who can be fussy). He advised us that we should leave a little earlier to avoid public holiday crowds, and this worked out perfectly. Anuar shared great information with us about each excursion site. Eldest daughter loved the darling little Silver Back Monkeys and there was plenty of time for even our smallest child to get over her nerves and feed sliced sweet potato to one. The quiet glide along a perfectly tranquil river to watch the fireflies was a highlight and, again, Anuar arranged it so we would be well ahead of the public holiday crowd. A memorable afternoon of family fun. Thanks so much, Anuar.

Melanie Bellairs – February 12, 2014

Anuar picked us up from our hotel perfectly on time, took us first to the Batu Caves, then onto Kuala Selangor to see the Silver Leaf Monkeys. I am a massive animal lover, and was so excited to be finally getting to meet these cool little friends! They were amazing! such friendly monkeys! Anuar bought us food to feed them, and the monkeys climbed all over us, sat on my sholder, then when we sat down, the sat on my lap and we just "Chilled" together. These monkeys are not like the more comon monkeys you get all over Asia, these are specific to paticular areas.

After the monkeys, we then went on to a seafood diner at a local resturant. wonderful food, overlooking the river where we watched the beautiful sunset!

Finally we visited the Fireflys. Anuar gave us the choice of either the speed boat or to be paddled in a small wooden boat. We decided we wanted to be paddled. never seeing Firflys before, we were amazed! definatly something everyone needs to see!

If you are planning a trip to KL, Anuar's tours are the best. they are extreamly good value for money, good quality tours. As Anuar's tours are 1 on 1, you get a very personalized tour and get everything from it you are wanting to see!

Thankyou Again Anuar!!!

Our tour was private, very professional & it was great to see the early history of Malaysia. We had such a great time we asked Anuar to book us in with another tour a couple of days later. Unfortunately Anuar was unavailable, but arranged for Balan to guide us on our next tour to the Batu Caves, Silver Leaf Monkey's & the Firefly's (This whole tour is a must!!) This was without a doubt our favorite day in our two weeks in Malaysia & our guide Balan was exceptional. We highly recommend Anuar and can't wait to get back to see more of Malaysia with these great guys. A "Anuar & Balan thank you again for the awesome time you showed Audrey & I while we were in KL"

See you again soon,

One of the great things we loved about our tour with Mytravellane is that they always have something up their sleeve. We thought we would just be seeing the fireflies for that day, but they also managed to sneak other memorable destinations in our tour. Very good time management and customer service. • A high-quality camera if you want to do some photography yourself and your phone doesn’t have one because trust me, you are going to regret having low-quality pictures of this wonderful spot.
  • Extra SD card if you are bringing a professional camera.
  • Extra props for photography
  • Portable Charger because it is a no-brainer!
  • Water-proof bag and hand wipes.

Try to fit everything into one backpack or a duffle bag. Don’t bring too much luggage because it only hinders your fun at the Sky mirrors.

What To Wear for Your A-Day Trip to Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

Sky-mirror-cloths

Comfort is important for a trip where you are going to be out in the sun for a long time. Wearing the right type of clothes matters even more when you are going to take tons of loads of pictures, and this applies to Sky Mirror too. After all, extraordinary photography is the main activity at Sky Mirror!

Mirror Sky Kuala Selangor is all blue sky, white, fluffy clouds and crystal-clear water reflecting it like a mirror. So, wear vibrant clothes with cheerful colours and try to keep the colours of your whole outfit in harmony with the background!

For footwear, I would recommend wearing Flip-flops or sandals as they are best for walking in the sand. You can also spice up your outfit with accessories and photos with various props and have fun showing off your photography skills with everyone.

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor (With Tips For Photos & What To Expect)

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor - travelswithsun

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor is one of the hidden gems that can be found in Malaysia . Simply a must-visit attraction in Kuala Selangor !

This place is gaining more popularity among the locals. Although it has yet to reach the international fame of the Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats!

By the way, Sky Mirror Sasaran Beach is another name for this place.

Blue tears and sky mirror kuala selangor, review of sky mirror kuala selangor tour, sky mirror tour package (and cost), what to bring, hotels close to the sky mirror, homestays near to sky mirror, what is so special about the sky mirror of kuala selangor.

Firstly, you can only see the “Sky Mirror” during certain hours (typically during low tide ). The exposed sand bank in the middle of the sea creates an unusual backdrop for photos.

And at low tide, the water is almost still too. So it reflects the sky pretty much perfectly! Especially during a sunny day when the sky is a bright blue !

Clouds reflected in the sky mirror of Kuala Selangor

Best Time To Visit Sky Mirror Malaysia

The tours to visit the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor only run a few times a month , depending on the tide .

To be exact, the 1st and 15th of lunar month. And 4 days before and after these dates ( new moon and full moon periods ).

During those days, the tours will have a few slots spread throughout the day .

Photography Tips (Cloudy Vs Blue Skies)

If your goal is to get blue skies in your photographs:

Then you should check the weather ahead of your trip too.

What if it’s cloudy?

You will get a minimal effect (like the picture below) with less harsh shadows!

Sky mirror on a very cloudy day

And on the plus side, it won’t be as hot as going in the afternoon. We got the early morning slot so it was not hot at all.

A cloudy day creates a different feel too:

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor on a partly sunny day

Taking photos at the Sky Mirror on a cloudy day

There are occasionally patches of blue sky if you walk around so don’t be too disappointed if you were hoping for blue skies.

Another silver lining for a cloudy day is that nobody needs to squint their eyes in the photos =)

What else can you do besides getting photos for the gram?

In general, most of the tour operators usually provide a combination or all of these same activities.

Listed in no particular order here:

  • Eagle feeding/bird watching during the day
  • A boat tour to see fireflies in mangroves at night
  • Boat tour to see the blue tears (glowing plankton) at night
  • Clam catching
  • And of course, a boat tour to visit the Sky Mirror during the day

Eagle feeding tour at Pasir Penambang - photo credits to liyanaabdah (Instagram)

  • The order of activities depends on the tide.
  • All the tour companies seem to be run by Chinese groups. So it would be convenient if you know Mandarin or have a friend who does.
  • Some tour operators combine Pulau Sembilan and the Sky Mirror into a 1-day package. You can read about that in the next section

Why not see the blue tears too?

There used to be an overnight (or full day) tour. Where you could stay over at one the Pulau Sembilan islands to see the blue tears (glowing plankton) wash ashore at night.

You can read about our overnight experience to see blue tears in Pulau Sembilan from this post :

But in early 2017, visitors were no longer allowed on the island:

Possibly due to overcrowding of almost 300 visitors daily when the actual daily limit for visitors was around 100.

Thus, that led to significant pollution (e.g. trash and toilet waste) of the islands. ='(

The islands were supposed to re-open at the end of 2018 but until now, there’s still no word yet.

In the meantime:

Tour operators try to offer both the blue tears and sky mirror to their customers:

For example, a visit to the sky mirror in the first half of the day. Followed by another trip to see the blue tears at night.

Both activities will require a boat ride to the sea.

For the blue tears, the tour guide will use a net to scoop some up for visitors to have a look.

Not quite as impressive (depending on the season and weather ), but take what you can get.

Now back to the Sky Mirror, here’s what a typical day tour itinerary is like:

1. Typical prices (cost)

This was the tour company we chose: skymirrortour .

We just went for the Sky Mirror as we have already seen both the fireflies and blue tears before.

Booking our spot on the Sky Mirror Tour a month ahead at RM80 per person .

2. Duration

You will get around 2 hours max to enjoy the Sky Mirror due to the tide coming in.

3. Tour Itinerary

For the morning slots:

Start this day early at 6.30am to meet the rest of the group at the nearby kopitiam.

Tip – the kopitiam opens at 6am but even so, you might want to get there before all the tables are taken ? by the other people in your tour group.

You can walk or drive to the jetty from Sasaran town ( Less than a minute’s drive away).

At the jetty

Board a boat and head for the sea. It is a 30-40 minute journey before you reach the salt flat.

The boat will pass mangroves along the way.

At the Sky Mirror

There may be many brightly-clad tourists already there with other tour operators. To pick out the perfect photo spot. This isn’t too big an issue as the area is quite large anyways.

A couple of professional photographers are with the tour service so look out for them if you need some assistance.

There should be some props you can use too.

Colorful objects make good props at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

It’s not just sand and seawater:

If you’re scared of bugs, it might alarm you that there are little hermit crabs in the sand.

The sand is alive at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

Tip – There are less of them near the edge of the salt flat where the boats are docked but we didn’t mind them too much.

There are some really interesting looking crabs (see pictures below). Be careful not to step on the bigger shells.

Crabs spotted at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

End of the Sky Mirror tour:

Get back on the boat and reached the jetty with enough time to pack and check out of your accommodation.

Overall, we personally had a pleasant experience with Sky Mirror Tour. With no delays or complications .

Communication with the tour service was done through WhatsApp ( in Mandarin ). With fast response times.

Here are some of the popular tour operators:

Mind that tour slots are limited and are held only a few times per month .

Book early to avoid disappointment. More so when a long public holiday is approaching.

4. Wave Rest House & Cafe ( 海。浪滔滔 民宿)

A combination of accommodation and tour package, this one is run by a family . They have a Facebook page ( link here ).

The main host, Steve pretty much does everything. Acting as tour guide, driver, photographer, etc.

Their 2-day itinerary includes a visit to the swamp to see wildlife (mostly birds).

There’s also an opportunity to rent one of their bicycles to go to the beach. Plenty of shells and mud skippers there!

After dinner, there’s some craft time. That may be stringing shells together.

The next day, they will take you to the Sky Mirror after breakfast . The very last activity of the day is oyster harvesting .

What Is The Accommodation Like?

As for the accommodation:

They have some container-style rooms . These are clean and simple with air conditioning . The meals they provide are also simple but adequate.

Wave Rest House & Cafe Packages

Sky Mirror Tour - Wave Rest House & Cafe Packages

Note: Rooms are cheaper if you have more than 2 people in your group.

Sky Mirror Tour With Wave Rest House & Cafe

It is an extra charge of RM85 per person if you want to go to the Sky Mirror ( boat trip to Pulau Angsa ) during the 2-day stay.

There needs to be a minimum of 7 visitors before this tour can run. Please allocate 5-6 hours for this. Insurance is included .

What to bring:

  • Please prepare your own toiletries, sunblock and insect repellent.
  • You will need a pair of socks to go with rain boots during the mangrove forest exploration.
  • Wave Rest House & Café also provide variety beers and drinks (not included in the package prices)

For more details, you can contact them on Facebook ( link here ).

Your itinerary may vary slightly depending on the weather and tides. They will send you the actual itinerary once the date of your visit is confirmed.

Need a more complete packing list?

  • Colorful clothes are definitely a good idea.

Try to wear bright colors at the sky mirror, Kuala Selangor

  • You’ll need a hat , slippers and plenty of sunscreen too. Sunglasses are up to you.
  • Bring figurines or toys of your favorite characters, colorful umbrellas, scarves, etc. We even saw someone with a kite too!

Umbrellas make good props too at the sky mirror, Kuala Selangor

  • A jacket or scarf if you are afraid of getting cold (during the boat ride).
  • They provide water in plastic bottles (eek!). Take your own bottle and refill it at your accommodation or breakfast spot before the trip. To avoid unnecessary plastic waste.
  • Something to take photos with! Although the tour service may have photographers at hand, bigger groups are quick to book them. Doesn’t hurt to bring a selfie stick or tripod either.
  • Unless you don’t mind leaving your things on the boat (at your own risk), bring a waterproof bag that you can put on the ground close to you. There is nowhere dry at the salt lakes.

Don’t forget to use the toilet before the boat ride! There are no facilities at the Sky Mirror.

Kuala Selangor’s Fireflies

  • Filed under Day trips , Kuala Selangor , Nature

Most visitors to Kuala Selangor come to watch the synchronized flashing of thousands of fireflies glowing spectacularly in the evenings along the banks of Selangor River.

Kelip-Kelip Kuala Selangor

The best way to enjoy this spectacle of nature is by travelling along the river in a traditional sampan or an electrically-powered fiberglass boat to help reduce air, water and noise pollution and protect the fireflies’ natural habitat.

Firefly tours in Kuala Selangor are often combined with Blue Tears and eagle feeding tours , which also take place along the river.

Fireflies Tour

For maximum visibility, the best time to experience Kuala Selangor’s fireflies is slightly after 8pm on a clear, moonless night. Any later than that, and the fireflies may have found a mate, causing them to stop flashing.

There are three places to catch this rare, natural phenomenon:

Chalet-style accommodation is available at this resort.

Price: ~RM16.00 (Adult) ~RM9.00 (Child) per pax Kampung Bukit Belimbing Chalet: ~RM159.00 (Weekday), ~RM212.00 (Weekend), ~RM243.80 (Public Holiday) – each chalet sleeps up to 4 pax Opening hours: 7.45pm – 10.30pm (last call 10.00pm) Boat: Electrically-powered fiberglass boat

Run by the district council, this is another popular choice among visitors.

Price: ~RM50.00 per sampan (max. 4 pax per sampan) Opening hours: 7.45pm – 11.30pm Boat: Sampan

Just 2.5km from Kuala Selangor Nature Park and Bukit Melawati , Pasir Penambang is an alternative starting point for firefly tours conducted by several tour companies.

Price: ~RM20 for adults, ~RM15 for children (2-10 years). Boats for large groups (25-40 pax) available Opening hours: 7.30pm – 9.30pm (last call 8.45pm) Boat: Speedboat

About Kuala Selangor’s fireflies

The firefly is a type of insect from the beetle family. The ‘Pteroptyx tener’ species is the most dominant in Kuala Selangor, measuring about 5mm in length.

At night, these tiny insects congregate on berembang trees (Sonneratia caseolaris), a type of mangrove tree that grows naturally in the brackish waters along Selangor River’s banks.

They usually become active at dusk (unless it rains) and while congregating, each firefly displays flashes emitted from its abdomen. The males’ flashes are brighter so as to attract the females, and in the case of the Pteroptyx tener, their flashing is synchronized, which is rare in other firefly species.

The following are about 8km from Kuala Selangor’s fireflies and are popular things to do in Kuala Selangor during the daytime:

  • Bukit Melawati ;
  • Kuala Selangor Nature Park ;
  • Sky Mirror – an unusual natural phenomenon;
  • Blue Tears – a nighttime natural phenomenon; and
  • Sri Shakti Temple – magnificent Hindu temple.

How to get to Kuala Selangor

Driving is the best way to get here. Make your way towards the Sungai Buloh exit from the North-South Expressway and follow the road signs towards Kuala Selangor. If you’re leaving from Klang, drive towards Kapar and head from there to Kuala Selangor. For both routes, the journey should take less than 80 minutes.

By Bus Board Selangor Omnibus number 100 from Medan Pasar bus stop (opposite HSBC) in downtown Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Selangor. A one-way ticket costs RM9.00. Buses depart every 30 minutes from 6.30am to 7.30pm, and the journey takes about 2 hours. The last bus for the return trip from Kuala Selangor to Kuala Lumpur is at 7.00pm.

Alternatively, board the Cityliner bus from Klang Sentral for the ±49km journey to Kuala Selangor. Buses leave every 30 minutes from 6.30am to 7.30pm. A one-way ticket costs RM4.30.
