Geschichte des Tiergarten

History of the Zoo

The Zoo was opened in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine, Maria Theresa's husband, as an imperial menagerie in the park of the Schönbrunn summer residence.

The system goes back to a design by the court architect Nicolas Jadot. After a year of construction, the menagerie was completed in 1752, staffed with animals and presented to visitors. The center of the complex was the central pavilion designed as a breakfast room, today the Imperial Pavilion, which was only completed in 1759. 13 radially arranged animal enclosures surround it.

It was not until 1779 that the Zoo, which became home to more and more animals, was opened to the public.  Thanks to expeditions to Africa and America organized by Emperor Joseph II, more and more exotic animals such as elephants and giraffes came to the Zoo.

With the end of the monarchy, the Zoo became the property of the Republic of Austria.  However, supply bottlenecks and hygienic deficiencies caused by the First World War meant that the number of animals fell by almost 85 percent.

Under the direction of the biologist Otto Antonius, the number of animals increased sharply again until 1930. He also introduced the idea of breeding endangered animal species.

Unfortunately, the Zoo was not spared from the bombing of World War II.  Many of the animal residents lost their lives.

After extensive restoration work, the zoo found itself in dire financial straits.  Only the privatization of the Zoo, higher admission prices and numerous sponsors ensured that the enclosures could be renewed and expanded.

The Zoo has been part of the Schönbrunn UNESCO World Heritage Site  since 1996 .

Still today, the oldest continuously operated Zoo in the world exudes historical flair.  Schönbrunn Zoo is now home to more than 750 animal species from all continents and is dedicated to the preservation and protection of endangered species.

  • Address: Maxingstrasse 13b, 1130 Vienna
  • U-Bahn:   U4 Hietzing
  • Opening Times: Schönbrunn Zoo is open daily. The current opening times can be found here .

Tips for your zoo visit

First of all, it really is a lovely zoo. Enjoy yourself! We spent a lot of time there (most weekends, in fact) when we had young kids.

Here some tips to get more from a trip…

Entrance to the rainforest house

(The rainforest house)

The zoo is one of the Viennese sights that opens every single day of the year, starting at 9am and closing between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, depending on the season (at the time of writing).

Note that some of the enclosures begin closing up to an hour before the official closing time, and you can’t get in any later than 30 minutes before closing. So don’t leave your trip to late afternoon.

As one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vienna, the zoo can get busy: especially during the summer.

A lot of young Viennese families have annual passes, for example, and use the zoo much like you’d take your kids down the park. In the summer, consider visiting midweek rather than at the weekend.

A giant panda

(At the risk of repeating myself: Don’t. Miss. The. Giant. Pandas.)

Don’t be put off by cold weather or rain. The zoo has plenty of indoor enclosures and displays, including the rainforest house, aquarium and terrarium, bird houses, insektarium, polarium, polar bear world, etc. etc.

  • If you’re pressed for time, skip the wooded, sloped rear area of the zoo. The more international animals and enclosures live mostly on the lower levels.

(Reverse that last advice if you’re interested in farm animals and Austrian flora and fauna.)

  • Pick up a plan at the entrance, which also lists any feeding times (my tip: watch the sea lions being fed).
  • Oh, and whatever else you might do there, do not forget to visit the Giant Pandas .

Zoo ticket tips

Zoo ticket machine

(Ticket machine)

Queues for the ticket counters at the entrances can get long during peak seasons and times, especially if the weather is good. Which makes purchasing advance zoo tickets * online a strong option.

I last went on a Sunday in the middle of February and the zoo was still busy. However, machines at the main entrances sold day tickets (cards only as payment) and had no queue.

Another alternative is, for example, an All-inclusive Pass from GoCity or a Vienna Pass . Both cover numerous activities and/or attractions and include one-time free entry to the zoo: simply go straight to the ticket barriers.

Zoo information centre

(The info centre)

The zoo provides all the facilities you expect from a modern institution. The building just inside the main entrance, for example, has an information point and lockers.

Toilets, drinking water fountains and baby changing facilities also appear throughout the zoo.

Just about everywhere is accessible with a pram or wheelchair, though some parts of the zoo (like the Tirolerhof ) are up relatively steep hills and slopes, and some areas (like the aquarium) get quite crowded at peak times.

Don’t worry about language. Most information is available in English, too.

Eating and drinking

The main zoo area has a large open-plan food buffet. The royals used to take breakfast in the central pavilion back in the 1700s and that now houses a full-service restaurant.

Other smaller buffets, cafés and snack bars dot the zoo, too. If you need to sit down indoors, visit that central pavilion or the large café in the new Orang Utan area.

Another full restaurant (the Tirolergarten) sits on top of the hill at the back of the complex, serving typical country fare (also accessible to visitors from outside the zoo.)

Jumbo buffet snack bar

(One of the snack bars)

In the farmhouse next to the Tirolergarten, a farm shop has always sold simple but superb open sandwiches and pastries on all my visits.

Note that all of these places can get busy at peak times, so time your meal breaks accordingly. Also, not all are open year-round.

If you want to bring your own food and drink, the zoo offers a fair amount of outdoor seating: benches and even picnic tables.

How to get to the zoo

The zoo has three entrances:

Main entrance

The zoo’s main entrance is on the west side of the Schönbrunn complex and easily reached from Hietzing station, which is one stop on the U4 subway after Schönbrunn station and also a stop on the tram lines 10 and 60.

After you exit Hietzing, follow the wall of the park around to the right until you come to the large park entrance next to the Lindt chocolate shop (tempting to spend a few minutes here).

Go inside the park and keep to the path around to the right, walking past the landscaped gardens, Desert House and Palm House to reach the zoo.

That park entrance also has its own bus stop (Am Platz), served by the 56A, 56B, 58A, and 58B buses.

Palace entrance

Schönbrunn forecourt

(The front entrance to the palace area)

If you’ve visiting Schönbrunn Palace , simply head toward the hill and Gloriette from the main palace building and walk along the right edge of the open landscaped gardens.

At the bottom of the hill, after passing the entrance to the maze and to the right of the large Neptune Fountain complex, is a zoo entrance. The large banners and signs mean you really can’t miss it.

Tirolerhof entrance

This zoo entrance lies at the back of the Schönbrunn park area on top of the hill.

Two nearby bus stops are:

  • Montecuccoliplatz: served by the 8A, 56A, 56B, 58A and 58B bus lines
  • Klimtgasse: also served by the 8A

The 56 and 58 buses all leave from Hietzing subway station.

It’s a bit of a walk from the initial park entrance through to the zoo entrance at the Tirolerhof part of the zoo, and another walk down the hill to the main enclosures. Might only make sense if you’re using Schönbrunn’s rear car park (see below).

A large paid car park sits on Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, opposite the Orangerie part of the palace.

If you want to enter the zoo from the rear Tirolerhof side, another car park sits at the top of Schönbrunn along Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg. Both can fill up quickly, mind you.

Schönbrunn Zoo

The oldest zoo in the world has in recent decades turned itself into one of the most modern and - by general consensus - one of the most beautiful zoos in the world.

Zoo No. 1 in Europe! - For the sixth time in a row, British zoo expert Anthony Sheridan named Schönbrunn Zoo the best zoo in Europe in January 2022.

The animal compounds of the 250 years old zoo have a particularly generous and natural design. More than 700 - some highly endangered - animal species live here: from Siberian tigers, pandas and hippos to one-horned rhinoceroses. Other Highlights: the Koala House , the lion pen , the South America Park , the aquarium and terrarium with coral reef and the " Polarium ." Furthermore, the Zoo ORANG.erie - the home of the orang-utans - and the Rain Forest House where you and your children can marvel at the vast range of flora and fauna from Borneo.

The Nature Experience Trail with a fire salamander climbing wall and a cobweb for clambering will also capture the hearts of young visitors. So will the Treetop Trail - a dizzying 160 meter long rope bridge 10 meters above ground.

Do you want to experience a tropical thunderstorm in the rainforest house? Or watch how cheetahs and jaguars consume their prey? Or see how penguins and seals are fed? This is where you'll find feeding times and other dates .

Hungry? Café-Atelier Nonja, the Imperial Pavilion and the Tirolergarten pamper hungry visitors .

Tip: Anyone who has run out of steam should hop on the Panoramabahn sightseeing train for a tour of the zoological gardens. Excellent views of the city below await from the Gloriette in the extended tour of the Schlosspark. Vienna City Card

There is a lot to see and do at the zoo, which is why it makes sense to have the  map of Vienna Zoo  handy at the time of your visit.

The map helps locate facilities such as restrooms, parking, restaurant, first aid center and navigate the various zones, enclosures, and activities efficiently.

Carrying the Tiergarten Schonbrunn’s layout is highly recommended if you are traveling with kids because you won’t waste time finding the various exhibits, and in the process, get exhausted.

Planning a visit to the Vienna Zoo in winter, but not sure?

Don’t worry. Summer is the best time to visit any Zoo, but winter at Vienna Zoo isn’t bad either.

Winter visits are more fun as there is less crowd and you can get a closer look at the animals.

You will be amazed at how active the animals are in their warm indoor enclosures.

The cooler temperatures do not bother many animals, especially those from Africa or South America.

Many exotic animals are likely to be seen outside in the winter playing between their indoor and outdoor enclosures, depending on their mood.

Vienna Zoo animals – what to see

The Vienna Zoo showcases various animals, birds, mammals, reptiles, and fishes.

The wildlife attraction is home to around 8,500 animals of more than 700 species.

The must-see attractions of Vienna Zoo are –

Regenwaldhaus is the German word for Rainforest house.

It is a giant glassed enclosure, giving the visitor a jungle vibe.

The artificial thunderstorms, the floor, the canopy, etc., depict a natural tropical forest.

Inside this forest, animals, birds, bats, etc., live free, giving it a feeling of authenticity.

Must: To look at the ‘flying foxes,’ you must go to the top level of this forest house.

Elephant House is dedicated to keeping and caring for the elephants.

The elephant shower routine is an exciting attraction in the Zoo.

If you are traveling with kids, we suggest you find out the timings of the cleaning and feeding sessions and plan accordingly.

Younger visitors love the cleaning and feeding sessions in this part of the Vienna Zoo.

The cat family – Tigers, Cheetahs, and Leopards – occupy rooms and outdoor areas in the big cat house.

Kids also get very excited in this section.

Watching the large sea animals jump about and shower the visitors is always a treat.

Tirolerhof is a farmhouse from the mountainous Tyrolean region of Austria and is located just behind the Elephant House.

At Tirolerhof, one can see rare breeds of farm animals such as horses, sheep, goats, etc.

Vienna Zoo: A Complete Guide

vienna zoo tour

Have you been planning a trip to one of the world’s most beautiful zoos that has a huge variety of animal species in a wonderful atmosphere??

Well, you’re lucky as Vienna makes it possible!

The Vienna Zoo or Schonbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world and is located in the gardens of the beautiful Schonbrunn Palace. Being part of the palace complex it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s home to over 700 different species of animals – such as the giant pandas, koalas, elephants and lions – a Schonbrunn tour is surely an experience of its kind for the whole family.

It has been regularly voted Europe’s best Zoo and attracts more than two million tourists every year.

In this post we share everything you must know before you book your Vienna Zoo tickets.  Find out what to see and do there, where to eat, how to visit and much more.

Brief History of Vienna Zoo

vienna zoo tour

Vienna Zoo is the oldest operating zoo in the world. Although the zoo was officially opened in 1752, a smaller menagerie had already existed on the grounds since 1540.

It was founded by Francis I – the husband of Empress Maria Theresia, and in the beginning, it operated as the royal menagerie.  A menagerie was an earlier model to the modern zoo that was home to a collection of captive animals held for display. In those days they organised a few expeditions to Africa and the Americas to procure a few animal specimens for the zoo.

In 1778 the zoo was opened up to the public every Sunday. By the end of the 18th century, visitors to Schonbrunn could see big cats, polar bears, wolves, hyenas, elephants and kangaroos. The first giraffe, a gift from the viceroy of Egypt, arrived in Vienna in 1828 and had a great impact on the city. Clothes and accessories with a giraffe print became very popular in the city, and this led to a large number of visitors at the zoo. In fact, the zoo has been influencing life in Vienna since that time.

Vienna Zoo had its share of ups and downs. The best period was before the world wars when the zoo was home to more than 700 species and 3,500 specimens. The wars had a deep impact on the zoo, as due to shrinking food supplies and bomb raiding of World War II many animals were killed and the animal specimens were reduced to only 400. It’s only in the 1990s the zoo was privatised and soon got back on track.

Today, Vienna Zoo is famous for its extensive and thriving collection of exotic animals, including polar bears, lions, tigers, and wolves. There are many of the buildings that still use the historical structures dating back to the Habsburg Era. And also features a modern site that includes a desert house, an aquarium, rainforest house, polarium, and a bird pavilion.

Vienna Zoo Animals – What to See

Best time to visit Vienna Zoo

It’s best to visit the zoo as soon as they open at 9 am. During the early hours most animals are active and more visible, and as the day gets hotter, they may recede to shaded areas.

Also, the temperature is moderate and you can explore most of the outdoor areas of the zoo. Going early means there will be fewer crowds and you don’t need to stand in any queue. You also get more time to explore the zoo at leisure. Avoid weekends or school holidays as it can get crowded.

How much time does Vienna Zoo take

If you’re visiting with family and kids and plan to see all animal enclosures, attend feeding sessions, etc then you’ll need at least four to five hours to explore the zoo.

However, if you’re visiting with a group of adults, you can cover most animal enclosures and other exhibits within two to three hours.

Feeding in Vienna Zoo

The most popular is the feeding activity of animals which attracts visitors of all ages every day. About every 30 minutes between 10 am and 4pm you can watch animals being fed at different locations. You can plan your visit according to the feeding and training times of the animals, but sometimes for various reasons feeding may not take place in public.

Children in Vienna Zoo

There are many theme parks spread across the zoo that are fun and offer a lot of variety with their climbing frames, slides and swings. This gives children an opportunity to climb an elephant, a salamander, or crawl through a spider-net tunnel.

There is a horse-riding track where children can do their rounds on Haflinger or Shetland ponies and even stroke dwarf goats in the Petting Zoo. If you’re tired and need some rest, you can take the Panoramic train, which commutes between the emperor’s breakfast pavilion, the elephant house and the Tirolerhof.

There are two shops that offer a huge selection of soft toys of more than 2000 animals and natural items – from flamingos to sloths and pandas. Your little one can take their favourite animal (soft toy) home and bid goodbye to the residents of the zoo.

Vienna Zoo in winter

If Summer is a good time to visit the zoo, Winter isn’t bad either. Visiting during winter is more fun as there are fewer crowds and you also get a closer look at the animals.

The animals are active in their warm indoor enclosures. And cooler temperatures make no difference to many animals, especially those from Africa or South America. In fact, many exotic animals can be seen playing in their enclosures, depending on their mood.

Food and Drink

Vienna Zoo has two eateries – Tiroler Garten tavern and Kaiserpavillon. They both have a rich history. The site of the Tiroler Garten tavern dates back to the 19th century when Archduke Johann established a Tyrolean style log cabin, where he held cattle and ran a little farm.

Today’s Tyrolean house goes back to the 1990s when it was re-built from the original parts of an 18th century Tyrolean farmhouse. Inside it’s a cosy tavern and has a lovely shady garden to hang out during warmer months.

Meanwhile, the 300-year-old Kaiserpavillon in the middle of the zoo reflects Schonbrunn’s imperial glamour, and is decorated with frescoes, chandeliers and a domed roof.

There is also an alternative restaurant and cafe in Schonbrunn park – Landtmann’s Jausenstation and Gloriette Cafe. Both provide a good option for lunch or a snack.

Specific feeding times at the Vienna Zoo Tiergarten Schönbrunn can vary based on the day season and specific exhibits The feeding schedules are often part of the zoo’s daily programming and they may be subject to change To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on feeding times during your visit I recommend checking the official website of Tiergarten Schönbrunn or contacting the zoo directly. The official website or information provided at the entrance of the zoo typically includes details about daily schedules special events and feeding times for various animals Planning your visit around these schedules can enhance your experience by allowing you to witness specific activities including animal feedings and keeper talks.

The city with the oldest zoo in the world that is still in use today is Vienna Austria The Tiergarten Schönbrunn located on the grounds of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna was founded in 1752 and is recognized as the oldest continually operating zoo in the world It opened to the public in 1779 and has since been a popular attraction showcasing a rich history and contributing significantly to global efforts in wildlife conservation and education.

Visitor numbers can be influenced by factors such as seasons special events and global circumstances For the most accurate and up-to-date information on the number of people visiting the Vienna Zoo I recommend checking the official website of Tiergarten Schönbrunn or reaching out to the zoo directly Many zoos periodically release attendance figures and the official sources would provide the most reliable information on visitor statistics.

The history of Tiergarten Schönbrunn the zoo located at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria is quite fascinating: 18th-Century Origins: The zoo was founded in 1752 as an imperial menagerie by Emperor Francis I. It was originally intended for the Habsburg family and the court to enjoy exotic animals. Public Opening: In 1779, Emperor Joseph II opened the zoo to the public, making it one of the first zoos in the world that allowed public access. Architectural Development: The zoo’s architecture reflects the styles of different periods. The Elephant House, for instance, was designed in the Moorish Revival style and the Rainforest House showcases Art Nouveau architecture. World War Challenges: During World War II the zoo suffered significant damage. Many animals perished and the infrastructure was heavily impacted. Post-War Restoration: After the war, the zoo underwent extensive reconstruction and restoration efforts. It reopened to the public in 1945. Conservation Focus: Over the years Tiergarten Schönbrunn has evolved into a center for wildlife conservation. It actively participates in breeding programs for endangered species and contributes to global conservation initiatives. Historical Significance: In 1992 the zoo was declared a cultural heritage monument, emphasizing its historical and architectural significance. Educational Initiatives: Today the zoo is not only a popular tourist attraction but also an educational institution. It aims to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and biodiversity through various programs and exhibits.

Tiergarten Schönbrunn, or the Vienna Zoo, is home to a diverse collection of animal species. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the zoo houses over 700 different species. This collection includes a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles amphibians, and invertebrates. Some notable animals you may find at the zoo include: Giant Pandas: Tiergarten Schönbrunn is known for its giant panda couple, Yang Yang and Long Hui. Elephants: The zoo has an elephant house providing a habitat for these majestic creatures. Penguins: Penguin House features different species of penguins in a specially designed exhibit. Big Cats: Lions, tigers, and cheetahs are part of the zoo’s big cat collection. Primates: Various species of primates, including gorillas, orangutans, and monkeys, can be found in dedicated areas. Aquarium and Terrarium: The zoo has facilities for aquatic and reptile species, showcasing a variety of fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Birds: A vast array of bird species are housed in aviaries throughout the zoo. African Savannah: This area features species native to the African savannah, including giraffes and zebras.

Vienna Zoo At Schonbrunn: A Native Mum’s Guide And Map

Since my Viennese grandparents took me to the Vienna Zoo in Schonbrunn I have returned several times: first with my little nephews, now with my own children. Below you’ll get my personal guide of the ‘Tiergarten Schonbrunn’. Find out what to see and do there, where to eat (or NOT to eat), and how to book tickets.

Vienna Zoo: flamingos and historic pavilion

Like Schonbrunn Palace , the zoo has a rich history. Starting out as a ‘pet project’ in 1752, Emperor Francis’ I. created a baroque menagerie of exotic animals. Since its beginnings the animals had their home in the forestry part of the gardens behind the palace.

In the past few decades, luckily, the world’s oldest zoo has had some serious upgrades. Now it is into one of the best in Europe. Wherever you turn to as you walk through the forest, you’ll see that the animals own large spaces.

Since the zoo’s entrance is on top of the hill near Gloriette belvedere, you will just make your way down to the main area.

Vienna zoo: walking bridge

The entrance next to rustic Tirolergarten tavern also leads you past a historic Tyrolean farm house, beautifully painted and with wooden beams, and some farm animals.

This photo shows the tree walk, which leads from the upper part of the zoo down to the main area with its many animal pavilions. During your walk you can spot animals such as lynxes and wolves.

The tree walk takes just a few mintues, is generally safe and can also be used by smaller children. In the winter months and in bad weather conditions the tree walk can be closed.

Vienna Zoo Animals

Vienna Zoo Schonbrunn: penguins

About every 30 min between 10.00 am and 4.00pm you can watch animals being fed at different locations. My kids absolutely fell for the orang utans and the koalas.

If your kids like to stroke animals head for the miniature goats at the petting zoo close to the large adventure playground.

How to Get There: Panorama Train

Vienna Zoo Schonbrunn: panorama train

Starting from the palace, the electric train comfortably makes its way to Vienna zoo in 20 min. On the way you pass the Imperial museum of carriages and vehicles (Wagenburg) and Hietzing Gate. All in all, the train’s full round perfectly entertains children and adults. Further stops along the route are Schonbrunn’s original Tyrolean house, the Gloriette belvedere on top, and the obelisk and Schonbrunn’s public swimming pool (perfect for hot summer days).

Food And Drink

Vienna Zoo Schonbrunn: Tirolergarten tavern

Tirolergarten tavern is cosy inside and has a lovely shady garden to hang out in the warm months. On the other hand, 300 year old Kaiserpavillon in the middle of the zoo reflects Schonbrunn’s Imperial glamour, boasting frescoes, chandeliers and a domed roof.
