The Best Brazil Souvenirs
Brazil is one of the top destinations for tourists from various parts of the world as it is rich in culture and has a lot to offer visitors.
The country’s traditions of handicrafts, music and art are world-renowned which means that tourists and visitors have many exciting choices of Brazilian souvenirs to choose from.
As a result, if you visit the country, it is essential to go back home with something that will always remind you about your time here. I know that my own Brazilian souvenirs are some of my most treasured souvenirs from my travels.
Unlike getting a Brazil visa, which I found incredibly difficult (but that’s a story for a different day!), shopping in Brazil is a piece of cake. This is true whether you’ll be visiting Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Paulo, the Amazon, or traveling further afield.
With this, here are top souvenirs you should consider getting before leaving Brazil
Jewelry with Gemstones
Brazil stands out for its gemstone availability. You will find Brazilians wearing these beautiful stones, and most tourists will find themselves face-to-face with gemstones for sale in the country at some point.
You will find a lot of gemstones, for instance, emeralds, at Minas Gerais.
The store is home to series of unique bracelets, rings, and necklaces made from emeralds. Did you know that 65% of the world’s colored gemstone comes from Brazil?
If you’re looking to purchase authentic precious stones while here, this is a great place to start! These make great romantic souvenirs to bring home for a wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, partner, or spouse.
Vinyl Records
There are many stores in Brazil where you can buy vinyl records as the country stand out for samba and bossa nova music.
Make sure to add Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to you’re Brazil itinerary if you want to indulge your musical side. The beach has a famous music store (Modern Sound) located near which is one of the best in the world.
Modern Sound was opened in 1966 and had series of samba, bossa nova, and samba jazz records.
You can pick up a classic like the “Girl from Ipanema” or check out something you’re never heard before. When you play your records back home you’ll be transported right back to your time in Rio!
Bahian Bands
Bahian Ladies are figurines of Bahian women and are a very popular Brazilian souvenir.
However, it might not be a good idea for many white Western tourists to bring home these figurines since they will most likely be misunderstood back home.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t support Bahian artisans while you’re in Brazil.
You can find Bahian bands and textiles to purchase instead. Coming in many different colors, these are great momentos from your time in Brazil.
A Brazilian Hammock
For people that use hammocks back at home, make sure to get a hammock as a souvenir from Brazil! While I bought one as a North Carolina souvenir and not in Brazil, I can attest that owning a hammock that you pick up on vacation is absolute bliss!
It is one of the top souvenirs available from Brazil and they come in distinct styles, shapes, and different colors. There are many locally made hammocks, and you can find them all over the country.
Another popular Brazilian gift you can buy is Cangas. These are beach towels that have bright and colorful designs with alluring decorations. You will find them almost at every local shop and Brazil.
Your visit to Brazil is not complete without seeing the fabulous beaches, and this beach accessory will make your time here more memorable.
Cangas and beachwear are available in various designs and colors. They are the perfect moment of Brazil that will also make you look like a goddess as you walk along the coastline.
Brazilian Ceramics
One of the folk traditions that Brazil is known for is its ceramics, with a focus on local male and female figurines. These figures are a representation of the famous characters in the myths of Northeast Brazil.
One famous artisan is Jose Silvano with products are inspired by a local image from pastoral Brazil. Tourists will find a wide selection of objects from the different regions at Feira Hippie situated at Praca General in Rio de Janeiro.
Caipirinha Kit
If you’re like me, you’ll spend a lot of your time in Brazil sipping Caipirinhas by the beach (and in clubs, restaurants, rooftops, and your hotel room…).
For tourists like me who are captivated by this drink, buying a caipirinha kit and so you can continue to make them at home. This is an excellent souvenir from the country that gave birth to Caipirinha.
If you don’t want to buy a whole Caipirinha kit, at least bring home a bottle of Cachaça! You can make your own versions of caipirinhas and other Brazilian-inspired drinks!
This Brazilian national spirit is made from sugarcane. You can even find local distilleries to tour depending on where in Brazil you are going.
Replica Christ the Redeemer Statue
How beautiful it is to have a replica of part of the world’s eight wonders right at home. Many tourists flock to Brazil from various cities to see this status.
The good news is that you can have an exact representation of this statue and take it back with you.
These miniature statues are available at every local store, and they will always remind you of your trip to Brazil.
Brazilian Flip Flops
Havainas – the well-known flip-flops brand worldwide, is also located in Brazil. They are readily available in Brazil, even at a lower price.
They are available in several sizes and shapes and are one of the best souvenirs you can buy. Tourists will love the special edition and various themes of flip flops available.
Cuica, Caxixi, Berimbau, and other Brazilian Musical Instruments
Brazil also stands out for its unique taste in music. Little wonder the country is home to some special musical instruments like cuica, berimbau, and Caxixi.
The Capoeira musicians love playing berimbau and Caxixi a lot, while Cuica is a musical instrument with a flat bottom and a closed basket adorned with seeds.
Berimbau is a bow with a single string that provides rhythm to dancers.
Cuica and Samba go hand in hand. Samba is a high-pitched friction drum with a squeaky timbre – the reason why it is called laughing gourd.
Brazillian Sarong
Sarongs are one of the most famous beach clothing people can adopt for personal use in Brazil. It is available in various prints and colors and can be gotten at the beachwear store, local market, and beach.
People use them on the beach as a swimsuit to lay on the beach even though they are common in the Northeastern part of the country.
One of the most common souvenirs typical in Brazil is soapstone carving. This carving started from Minas Gerais before it spread to other parts of the country.
Tourists and visitors can easily watch as market vendors do their magic on soapstone by repeatedly cutting off soft stone by chipping using a tiny pickax.
Sample soapstone souvenirs are medallions, carved boxes, and candlesticks available at a reasonable price.
Brazil is home to one of the most famous sandals, so it makes sense to get one on your visit to Brazil.
The sandals were created as far back as the 1962s, and they got into the Brazilian market in the 90s.
Users will find series of these sandals that are available in various sizes and shape in Brazil.
Divino de Espirito Santo
In some parts of the country, focusing on Minas Gerais, these dove carvings are extremely common. They are available in sizes of about just a couple of inches to many feet.
These carvings represent the Holy Spirit and are designed to be placed over doorways to offer protection and good luck to users. They are available at a reasonable price all over Brazil.
Brazilian Flag
I love flags of countries, and seeing them displayed when I visit is so fun. I love having “fun with flags,” if you will.
So of course, a Brazilian flag souvenir is something I think makes a great momento from your trip. Y
ou can find other souvenirs from this list, like towns and t-shirts, decorated with Brazilian flags, or you can buy an actual flag to display back at home.
Brazilian Candy
There are so many delicious sweet treats to try in Brazil, from Brigadeiros (chocolate truffles) to Goiabada (guava desserts and candies).
You can eat them to your heart’s content when in Brazil, but why not bring some back as a great gift from Brazil for a friend or loved one?
They make especially good Brazilian gifts to take back to the office since they can be easily shared.
Brazilian World Cup Souvenirs
If you come from the USA or Canada, you might not appreciate how much South America loves soccer and specifically World Cup soccer.
In Brazil, the game is called futebol and spelled the Portuguese way. Even when I was in Ecuador, their national team was being celebrated in local shopping malls.
The Brasil National Team is one of the most celebrated and decorated World Cup teams in South America (and the world), and you will find Brazilian World Cup souvenirs, from postcards to team memorabilia to jerseys, available to bring back with you.
Brazilian Coffee
South America is home to some of the most famous coffee-growing regions in the world. Beyond being a South American coffee capital, did you know that Brazil is actually responsible for one-third of all coffee grown in the world?
So of course, you need to consider a few Brazilian coffee souvenirs.
You can bring back the beans themselves to brew your own Cafezinho at home, candies made from the beans, or locally made Brazilian coffee accessories like mugs and cups.
Portuguese Books and Portuguese Language Souvenirs
Whether you want books to read on vacation or something to adorn your shelves back home, I love buying books in foreign languages during my travels.
Even better if you can find one where the foreign language and your own native language are written side-by-side (for those who don’t speak the language of the place they are visiting).
Pictures of Sugarloaf Mountain
If you visit Rio de Janeiro, you’re bound to appreciate the beauty of the Carioca landscapes and you’ll take as many pictures of Sugarloaf Mountain as you need to.
But you can also buy a photograph, postcard, or painting of the mountain to decorate your home when you’re back. This is especially important if you know you aren’t the type to get your own photographs printed once you’re home.
Traditional Kitschy Souvenir from Brazil
Whether you want a Brazilian T-shirt, a fun spoon, or a collectible place, Brazilian memorabilia can be kitschy and fun.
Yes, I love buying novels and art prints when I travel, but my family also collects refrigerator magnets on our travels. It’s a fun way to remember our trips once we are back home.
Tips for Shopping in Brazil
Don’t start shopping without these tips!
Haggle but Be Respectful
While some markets expect you to haggle, don’t be a jerk about it! Be respectful and treat the shopkeepers and sellers with kindness and respect.
Don’t Flash Your Reais
Beyond tipping your hand as to how much you could potentially spend, you will most likely be shopping in touristy areas where you need to keep an eye out for pickpockets.
Start by keeping your cash and valuables out of sight at all times.
You need to make sure you put your safety above convenience since Brazil has seen a dramatic uptick in pickpocketing and mugging in recent years.
Cash is King
While many stores and restaurants take credit cards, there are still many places where you will want to have cash.
Beyond making it easier to haggle, you will find times when cash is the only way to pay. However, don’t take out more cash than you’ll use that day or in the next two days in case you do run into a situation.
Buy from Local Artisans
Whenever you can, buy as close to the producers as possible so you know that as much of your money as possible is going to the artisan or creator.
This is especially important in places like Brazil where companies try to separate the tourist experience from actual Brazilians. Stay in touch with the real Brazil as much as you can, and one way is to buy local.
5 Things to Pack for Brazil
Lonely Planet Brazil which is available as a paper copy or in a Kindle edition.
Your cell phone . You will want to stay connected during your trip, plus it will serve as a navigation system should you rent a car and a go-to camera. I use an iPhone 12 Pro these days, but I have also used Samsung phones in the past.
Full-Sized Travel Towel This is the best travel towel in the world . It’s pretty enough for the beach, large enough that you forget it’s a microfibre towel, and quick-drying, which is great if you’ll be spending a lot of time in Brazil at the beach or by the pool.
A GoPro for underwater and action photography. Why go all the way to Brazil and not be able to capture some of the most exciting parts of your trip?
A waterproof bag (also knowns as a dry bag) so that you can safely bring your electronics to the beach. You don’t want to ruin your trip with a drowned cell phone or a wet camera, but you also don’t want to miss out on capturing all those great beach moments with your loved ones!
Bonus: A Great Day Bag so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc). My current favorite is the Pacsafe Citysafe , which is especially great for Brazil because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets. It also transitions to a night bag more easily and won’t embarrass you if you go to dinner directly after sightseeing all day.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!
Before you leave for Brazil make sure you have a valid Travel Insurance Policy because accidents happen on the road. I pay for World Nomads, and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance whenever you will be in places with higher incidents of theft.
I’ve had friends whose phones were stolen, luggage was lost, and my sister even had her passport stolen at a hotel once. It’s always better to be safe than sorry! No matter which barra or region you’ll be staying in, there’s always a risk!
I have been a paying customer of World Nomads for travel insurance for four years, and I happily recommend them. If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.

Delicious drinkable souvenirs from Brazil
1. brazilian coffee.
Brazil has been the largest coffee exporter worldwide for the best part of two centuries now, accounting for about 35% of the world total. Second only to Italians in their obsession with the beverage, Brazilians prefer it short, though longer than a typical espresso. Taking a batch of coffee beans home with you will evoke sweet memories from your time in the country.
2. Jabuticaba liqueur
The tastiest jabuticaba liqueurs are the ones found in random countryside shops. Despite not being too easy to track down, the sweet and rich flavor of this drink will make up for the booze hunt. Jabuticaba (or the “Brazilian grape”) is a tiny fruit native to South America which, oddly enough, grows on its tree’s trunk. Bringing a bottle of this liqueur to your place will certainly impress and thrill your loved ones.
The Brazilian national liquor and the main ingredient of delightful caipirinhas, cachaça isn’t for the faint of heart. Mainstream brands like 51 may be available abroad, but nothing really beats craft cachaça. Small distilleries have sprung up across the country since the early 2000s. The historic beachside town of Paraty near Rio de Janeiro remains however a haven for liquor lovers.
4. Caipirinha set
Speaking of caipirinhas, you should definitely take your bartending skills up a notch by buying a tool kit to match your bottle of cachaça. A wooden cutting board, pestle, and spoon, plus a knife and cocktail shaker will make the perfect tropical addition to your bar. Then all you’ll have left to do is getting some limes and entertaining your guests with your Brazilian tales and a couple (or a dozen) caipirinhas.
5. Chimarrão
Chimarrão is used to drink mate, a bitter herbal tea made from namesake yerba mate. It’s popular throughout the southernmost part of South America (i.e. the Southern Cone) and a symbol of gaucho culture. Since you’ll probably have a hard time finding the herb back home, you can get a gourd simply to use as an ornament (or drink some other hot beverage from it, though you should never tell that to a local).
Irresistible food souvenirs from Brazil
6. biscoito globo.
I’d risk saying that going to the beach in Rio without munching on biscoito globo + iced mate (yeah, the same drink from no. 5, just ten times sweeter) should probably be considered a capital sin. This extra crunchy treat, crafted from cassava starch (just check no. 7), tastes slightly sour in both its sweet and salty options. It’s refreshing and fun to eat — but make sure to pack it in your carry-on if you don’t want to be left with cassava crumbs!
7. Tapioca starch
You heat tapioca starch to turn it into a sort of crunchy pancake, then you fill it with whatever you like (as long as it includes cheese!) and eat it as a snack. One of many scrumptious finger foods sold in towns across Brazil, it’s made from local staple cassava and is among the top Brazilian products to carry home in your suitcase.
8. Canastra cheese
Originating in the Canastra Mountains in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, canastra cheese is the undisputed star of Brazilian dairy. Whether fresh, half, or fully cured, it has a mildly spicy and full-bodied flavor. You can find cured canastra in dairy shops throughout the country these days. It tastes its best when paired with cachaça and makes a match made in heaven with the next item on our list.
9. Doce de Leite
Doce de leite is better known in English by its Spanish name — “dulce de leche”. This rich confectionery is the one dessert that binds all of Latin America together. Possibly too sweet for more delicate palates, locals love it nearly unanimously. When in a more fudgy consistency, it’s perfect as candy. When creamier, stores typically mix it with grated coconut, pumpkin jelly, or prune marmalade. Decadent and superb!
10. Goiabada
Goiabada is the third dish you can’t miss upon visiting the historic towns of Minas Gerais, right after doce de leite and canastra cheese. The latter, in its fresh version, is typically served along goiabada, a nationwide famous duo that goes by the suggestive name of “Rome and Juliet”.
The hearty dessert is a pretty consistent guava paste that resembles Jell-O in its consistency (though a bit sturdier). Mainstream brands are within reach in any supermarket, yet craft goiabada tastes 100% better.
11. Bolo de Rolo
Coming from sunny Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, this yummy roll cake is filled with none other than guava jelly. Like many other products made only in Brazil, it’s a classic example of a foreign dish that at some point locals adapted (may we say improved?) to their peculiar tastes. Pickier eaters can relish the chocolate-filled variety.
Sold in an impressive assortment of sizes (including bite-sized cakes), bolo de rolo is among the most original, delicious — and practical — souvenirs from Brazil.
Stunning wearable souvenirs from Brazil
12. indigenous jewelry.
Whereas Brazilian native communities are concentrated in the Amazon basin, companies from large cities have emerged in recent years with the express purpose of promoting indigenous art. Buying jewels like the ones advertised by Tucum , for example, is a wonderful way of helping Brazilian first nations while sporting the most stunning souvenirs from Brazil.
13. Brazil’s national soccer team jersey
Surely, the British created soccer. Yet Brazilians claim to have reinvented it, especially since becoming the sole nation to win five World Cups. Regardless, the Brazilian soccer team’s official jersey makes for the quintessential souvenir from the country. Both colors (yellow might seem more traditional, but navy is actually older) will look fantastic on you.
14. Brazilian bikini
Brazilians love a good beachside trend, and bikinis are a particularly valuable commodity on this turf. One summer everyone’s wearing crochet bikinis, then next year it’s fluorescent ones. These in turn are replaced with cutout swimsuits.
A bikini embellished with shells like the one above is timeless and instantly recognizable as a Brazilian item. So I’d say it’s among the coolest souvenirs from Brazil that you can bring home.
15. Bonfim wish ribbons
Attesting to Salvador da Bahia’s mystical aura, Bonfim wish ribbons are to be donned until they fall off. That should happen whenever the wish they were put on for comes true. Many visitors tie them to the fences around Senhor do Bonfim church, as you can see above, yet if worn as bracelets or anklets they make stunning fashion (and faith!) statements.
Only in Brazil would a Southeast Asian garment become the ultimate beachside accessory. Kangas’ colorful patterns and versatility, in that they are both a bathing suit coverup and a makeshift mat, turned them into a national favorite. No Brazilian would even consider going to the beach (or a picnic in the park) without carrying a kanga along — or getting one upon arrival.
Kangas are available in easily recognizable patterns (e.g. the mosaic pavement on the Copacabana promenade or renderings of Christ the Redeemer). Plus, you can find them all over the city’s beaches, so they’re among the best souvenirs from Rio de Janeiro.
17. Havaianas
As one of Brazil’s most globalized brands, Havaianas flip-flops are a source of national pride. Though now you can shop them online in most countries, nowhere else will you run into the myriad of patterns and layouts that dot local stores.
In addition to looking beautiful and being really useful, Havaianas weigh virtually nothing, and you can easily cram them into your suitcase. That means they’re awesome if you need to give away lots of souvenirs from Brazil.

Brazil souvenirs to dive into the culture
18. brazilian handicrafts.
Brazilian craftwork is one of the strongest iterations of the nation’s popular culture. Each region has its specialty. Mestre Vitalino’s works in clay , for instance, inspired generations of new artisans in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. The Louvre has since added them to its permanent collection.
Then there’s amazingly creative Brazilian ceramics. In Marajó — the largest island on the Amazon delta, where indigenous peoples have been making them for millennia — you’ll retrieve the most prestigious items. Ornaments and accessories in capim-dourado (literally “golden grass”) are a local treasure from the area around Jalapão, in the northern state of Tocantins.
Finally, carrancas are striking figureheads once common in the São Francisco river valley. In recent decades, they went on to become a cultural icon across lower northeastern Brazil. See how there’s something for every taste here? So if you want to steer away from mass-produced souvenirs, authentic Brazilian crafts from local communities are the way to go.
19. Berimbau
Essential to the practice of Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira, this percussion instrument makes for an original and visually appealing souvenir. Yet if packing a 1.2-to-1.5-meter long bow is an issue for you, you’ll find miniature versions in most gift shops. Berimbaus are ubiquitous in northeastern Salvador da Bahia. They’re nonetheless also available in Rio and other coastal cities where capoeira remains a living heritage.
20. Brazilian music
The strength of Brazil’s music industry is second only to that of the United States. While samba and bossa nova are now world-famous, the country boasts a vast range of genres to pick from. Highlights include funk carioca (a fusion of gangsta rap over a Miami bass beat), MPB (urban pop music), and axé (or samba+reggae, widely played during Carnival).
If CDs might feel somewhat old-fashioned these days, vinyl records are on the rise again among music aficionados. They’ll make a cool, off-the-beaten-track gift from Brazil. What’s more, they will introduce you and your loved ones to a whole new world of rhythm and artistry.
21. Brazilian literature
Critics hail Machado de Assis’ “The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas” as an ageless masterpiece of world literature. Yet if late-nineteenth-century Rio is too specific a setting for you, Jorge Amado’s “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands” will be a great casual read with its perfect tropical twist.
Either way, Brazilian books are definitely some of the finest things to buy in São Paulo. Brazilian fiction is gaining more popularity in the English-speaking world and is an amazing way of learning more about this fascinating country. Though most bookstores in large cities offer a decent array of local classics translated into English, we won’t tell anyone if you skip someone’s gift while you’re there and get it from Amazon instead!
Here’s a list of the best books about Brazil to keep you occupied for weeks.
I’m sure our list of the best Brazilian souvenirs to bring home from your trip got you pumped to visit the South American giant. Don’t forget to tell us in the comments below which gifts from Brazil you’re hot to put your hands on. Brazil’s beauty industry is huge, and the country owns some great national cosmetic brands. Natura , Brazilian Bum Bum, Surya Brasil and O Boticário are four well-known brands, many of their cosmetic products use organic ingredients sourced from the Amazon rainforest, giving them a unique scent and natural feel, friendly to your skin and health.

10 Unique Brazil Souvenirs You Should Buy on Your Vacation
Posted on Published: 2021-02-28 - Last updated: 2021-03-01
Wondering what to buy in Brazil? This list of unique Brazil souvenirs will give you plenty of shopping and gift ideas while you explore the stunning country. Brazil is known for its cheerful and vibrant atmosphere, especially during carnival. It features the world’s most biodiverse jungle, some of the top beaches, and bustling city life.
You will have plenty of fun shopping for the best things to buy in Brazil. While you can find postcards, magnets, and T-shirts anywhere in the world (and there is nothing wrong with collecting those, I know many are always on the lookout for Christmas ornaments), this list has 10 unique Brazilian souvenirs and gifts you should keep an eye out for on your travel! These things are mostly uniquely Brazillian items that should bring fond memories of your time in this South American gem.
What to Buy in Brazil
Christ the Redeemer Statues
One of the world’s most recognizable landmarks and one of the wonders of the world, a Christ the Redeemer statue is one of those unique things you can only buy in Brazil. This is probably the number one Brazil souvenir suggestion you are going to get from anyone who has been in Brazil.
The Brazilian Beach Towel
The cangas is a Brazilian beach towel / sarong / dress or whatever you need to cover up, when you need to cover it up! Beautifully colored and easy to pack, the cangas makes a perfect Brazil souvenir.
Sugarloaf Mountain Items
Just like the Christ the Redeemer, you will find Sugarloaf statues all over for purchase. Again, these local knick knacks will only be available to buy in Brazil. If you have a shelf of travel items, this will make the perfect addition.
Cachaça
This sugarcane-based spirit is available all over the country. If you want an authentic local experience, make sure you try it at a local distillery. If you are buying it at a local supermarket, get the gold Cachaça that is aged for a smoother experience.
Brazilian Bikini
How could we mention the beach without mentioning the iconic Brazilian thong bikini. Even if you only wear it in Brazil to fit in at the beach, you can keep it in your closet for your return trip, right!
The world-renowned Brazillian flip-flop are worn by almost everyone in the country, at least sometimes. Redily available near the beach, you can save a few dollars by buying them in their country of origin. They make the perfect gift from Brazil for friends and are a functional souvenir to bring home for yourself! So leave your old flip flops at home when you pack, and get yourself some Havaianas when you arrive!
Locally Made Hammocks
A locally made hammock, hand-woven by a Brazilian craftsman is a great way to remember Brazil. These hammocks are popular in smaller, coastal or rural towns. When you purchase locally made products, you are keeping more money in the local economy. I always encourage people to seek out locally made products when they travel and a hammock is one of those!
Brazilian Coffee
Wondering what to buy in Brazil to bring back as a gift? Well Brazilian coffee is a great one! Brazil is the leading grower and exporter of coffee. Over one-third of the world’s coffee comes from Brazil.
Specialty care should be taken to buy only whole-bean coffees that are fresh roasted. Brazilian coffees tend to be mild flavored to begin with, and stale brazil tend to be completely devoid of flavor.
Try to consume it within a week of grinding, as its mild flavor will become stale and flavorless. You can easily grab some in a supermarket, and freeze it when you get home!
Brazil Soccer Jersey
Ask just about ANY soccer fan who their second favorite team is, and you are more than likely going to get Brazil as an answer. If you want to bring home a gift from Brazil for a soccer fan or a child, grab a Brazil jersey. If you buy one for yourself, this Brazilian souvenir will bring back memories of your time in the country, and makes a great talking point whenever you wear it too!
Glass Sand Bottles
While you can buy glass sand bottles in other countries (I have seen them in Dubai, Jordan and Egypt ), this locally made artform makes the perfect Brazil souvenir. You can get them with many different designs and whatever colors you like! If you have kids, they will love watching them be made!
FAQ’s about Brazil Souvenir Shopping
Most of the things I mentioned are things that Brazil is known for, then it comes to souvenir shopping. You can get yourself some Havaianas, or a canga or a Brazilian bikini! If it is not clothing you are after, get yourself a Christ the Redeemer statue!
One of the top Brazil souvenirs that you should get it Rio would be Cachaça or Bananada. Both edible and not too tough to bring home, these make perfect gifts! Otherwise get yourself an “I Heart Rio” t-shirt or a Christ the Redeemer statue.
More Brazil Travel Tips
There are a few other things to think about when it comes to travel. Travel Insurance is one of those things I ALWAYS suggest and a decent policy too! Whether it is an emergency room visit for something as simple as strep throat, or an emergency appendix surgery, or an unfortunate moped incident things do go wrong when people travel every day.
I personally never travel without it, and I even checked into my policy about care for my children if I am ever in an accident or hospitalized. There are just too many things to think about.
You can find out more information and buy your travel insurance here.

11 Brazilian Souvenirs You Won’t Regret Buying
Sustainable dendê oil.
Sustainable dendê oil is made from the fruit of the palm tree. Native to Africa, the oil extracted from the fruit features prominently in Brazilian cuisine. It arrived in the America’s at the beginning of the slave trade and is incorporated in the cuisine of the Brazilian coast and state of Bahia. Moqueca is a stew made of fish and sea food and it’s deep orange-yellow colour derives from the few drops of dendê oil added. Dendê has a similar effect to adding saffron threads, but with a hint of sweetness.
Try these recipes that use dendê oil.
Brazilian Recipe Books
Pair the dendê oil with one or two of Brazil’s chefs’ recipe books. The region has some ingenious recipes that draw ingredients from the tropics, as well as remnants of European migration patterns. Not only are books ideal for building your Portuguese , but they’ll also bring a fresh Brazilian flare into your kitchen.
Bela Gil is a vegan chef; buy her books if you’re looking for alternative dishes to share with vegetarians and for inspiration on unusual Brazilian ingredients. José Almiro is a YouTube sensation who specializes in Brazilian BBQ. Learn how to imitate those perfectly seasoned cuts of meat at home. Also, Rita Lobo became known by her blog, Panelinha , now her YouTube channel and several books published for her loyal following.
Artisanal Ceramics
One unique artisanal Brazilian craft is handmade ceramics. World-renown sculptor Francisco Brennand creates stunning ceramics and brought this art form into the forefront of Brazilian art. You can buy real or knockoff ceramics by Brennand around the country. For some reason he’s known for his egg sculptures . Grupo Cerâmica Artesanal Serra da Capivara , based out of the World UNESCO site Serra de Capivara , has an affordable collection of ceramic kitchen pieces. They fashion cave painting replicas found in the cave system of the national park onto a wide range of ceramics. These are sold at most Pão de Açucar supermarkets.
Goiabada (Guava Jam)
Goiabada is a preservative made from guava fruit and sugar. It’s solid and sliced with a knife. It pairs marvelously with soft white cheese. In Brazil, you’ll eat it with Minas Gerais Cheese, but this fresh variety is not exported, so try any fresh Mexican cheese as a substitute. The saltiness pairs deliciously with the sweet fruit slices. Buy goiabada from any supermarket. Though opt for goiabada caseira , for a homemade version!
Cangas (Brazilian Sarongs)
Cangas are Brazil’s alternative to beach towels. Something like a sarong that you can wear, but which is long enough to use to dry yourself off or lay down on. There are infinite designs that adorn these Brazilian sarongs. Pick them up on the beach from vendors.
Alternative Cachaça Mixes
The home of cachaça, Brazil is the only place you can bag yourself a decent bottle. I enjoy the varieties that incorporate something a little different like cachaça de milho (a sweet corn cachaça) or cachaça com mel (honey cachaça). For an Amazonian twist buy cachaça de jambu (infused with an amazonian herb that makes your mouth tingle). Get silver cachaça for making caipirinhas and golden for taking shots. Read our full guide on cachaça here.
Havaianas Flip Flops
Havaiainas meaning ‘Hawaii’ in Portuguese, are a national religion. Find me a Brazilian without Havaianas! In Brazil these flip flops cost 20% less than abroad. Head to the official Havaiana store to get yours engraved, or add jewels and emblems. For the sake of healthy competition, the less known brand Ipanema is a cherished alternative.
Portuguese Puzzle Books
If you are aspiring to learn Portuguese , I suggest picking up cheap puzzle books whilst in Brazil. You can find these in the banca de jornal in the streets, which are something similar to a corner shop.
Northeastern Paintings
Northeastern paintings feature the diversity of Brazil. Characteristic of the Sertão region, the black and white paintings feature folklore and traditional sertanejo figures. This art is also commonly imprinted onto ceramic tiles. Buy these from artisanal markets, such as Feira de São Cristovão in Rio. This is a maze of shops and restaurants set in a stadium and with a square that hosts live music and forró dancing on Sundays.
Other Northeastern paintings from Bahia for instance, feature scenes from plantations and past colonial life. The shapes are frequently geometric. Perhaps the most famous Brazilian painter is Tarsila do Amaral, her work is shown in New York’s MAM. At any artisanal fairs and markets you can buy local art that features this Brazilian style.

Brazilian designer clothes as brazilian souvenirs.
I can’t resist Brazilian designer exotic patterns. They are fun, tropical and unlike any other country. For women head to FARM or Cantão for the most flattering and unique fashion on offer. Osklen is a surfers’ brand with pieces for both men and women. Also Richards , a Rio-based designer brand has comfortable and flattering summer styles for men and women.
Peteca (Brazilian Shuttlecock)
Take home a uniquely Brazilian sport that can fit in your pocket. Peteca , means “hit with the flat of your hand” in i ndigenous Brazilian Portuguese , and crowds play peteca on volleyball courts around the country. The peteca is simply a shuttlecock. Teams play like badminton, but the rackets are your hands . Peteca is one of the best pocket-sized Brazilian souvenirs you can find.
Brazilian Honey
Finally, Brazilian biodiversity means that Brazilian honey takes on unique flavours only found here in South America. You can purchase honey from bees that specifically feed on certain plants like orange tree (laranjeira) or cashew tree (cajueiro). Or try the Mel de cipó-uva to help with intestine and kidney pains. Mel de borá a southeastern honey that pairs with cheeses, or Mel de uruçu from a sting-less bee whose honey has healing properties. Check the feiras (open-air markets) for these honey products. You should also try pinga com mel (honey-infused cachaça), which is also usually available only at these nomadic markets.

Best Souvenirs to Bring Home From Brazil
Brazil is a beautiful country apparent not just in its natural beauty but also its colorful art and folklore. Its vibrant culture of music, art, and crafts means there are plenty of interesting choices for souvenirs, especially if you know where to look. These tips for buying souvenirs in Brazil will help you select the best things to bring home from your vacation in Brazil .
Musical Instruments
Brazil is a country of music. While Samba is the country’s best-known music tradition, you’ll come across many more on your travels from percussion bands like Olodum to capoeira music that accompanies outdoor capoeira gatherings. As you’ll notice, Brazilians take pride in the music and the instruments, and beautifully made musical instruments are available to buy for a range of prices.
One typically Brazilian instrument is the berimbau , the main instrument used to create the rhythms of capoeira music. Colorfully painted, handmade berimbaus can be found at handicrafts shops and markets, and they are even sold in children’s sizes. A berimbau is a large instrument, but the airports in Brazil are accustomed to people checking berimbaus as part of their checked luggage.
Ceramics are part of Brazilian folklore, and as a result, just about every region you visit has typical ceramics that make perfect souvenirs. In Minas Gerais, look for colorful busts of women that sit on windowsills—these represent single ladies waiting for a suitor. In Bahia, look for beautifully painted Bahiana statues that depict the colorful clothing worn by the people of Bahia. In fact, these ceramics can be found at handicraft shops and markets in the southern cities of Rio and Sao Paulo as well. In rural parts of Brazil, chickens are a common theme for ceramics, while in the north, cute cows draped in red, green, yellow, blue, or white are common—these represent the tradition of the Bumba de Boi festival.
Cachaça (pronounced kah-SHAH-sah) is Brazil’s traditional alcohol made from sugarcane. It’s been made there since the time when sugarcane plantations were worked by slaves. A bottle of good c achaça can make a nice souvenir if you like cocktails and want real Brazilian alcohol to make caipirinhas back home.
The cost of c achaça , also known as pinga , varies greatly from very cheap to more expensive. The cost is indicative of the quality, so look for higher priced bottles. Even better, take a tour of a distillery, where you’ll be able to try their c achaça and then buy directly from them—smaller distilleries generally make better c achaça than the large producers.
Soapstone carvings are a common item found in souvenir shops around the country, but they originate from the historic state of Minas Gerais. In towns like Ouro Preto , you can watch market vendors carve soapstone, which they do by repeatedly chipping away at the soft stone with a tiny pickax. Typical soapstone souvenirs include intricately carved boxes, candlesticks, and medallions, usually for a very low price.
Divino de Espirito Santo
These carvings of doves, which range in size from just a few inches to several feet, are very common in certain parts of the country, especially in Minas Gerais. They represent the Holy Spirit and are meant to be displayed over a doorway to bring good luck and protection. The ones made by small artisans can be expensive, but if you’re in Minas Gerais, especially Tiradentes, you should be able to find a beautiful dove for less than 40 reais.
Other Arts and Crafts
Brazil’s diversity means there is a huge variety of arts and crafts to choose from. One sure bet is FUNAI shops, the government agency for Brazil’s indigenous groups. Look for outdoor “hippie” markets, called “ feirinhas hippies,” which are usually held on weekends. Here you can find a variety of fun items, often sold by the artisans themselves, including wood carvings, hand-woven bags and clothing, ceramics, a variety of crafts made from recycled materials, and paintings.
Coffee and Food
Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of coffee, and good quality Brazilian coffee can be found everywhere. Even the store-bought commercial brands are good but look for coffee from smaller brands, especially those sold in the hills of Sao Paulo state and Minas Gerais, where the highest quality and best-known coffee is from.
For food souvenirs, try jars of doce de leite (offered plain or mixed with passionfruit or other fruits), pacoquinhas (peanut butter treats), pe de moleque (peanut brittle squares), jams made from Brazilian fruits , and goiabada (a delicious guava paste that is very common in Brazil). All of these can be found at grocery stores throughout the country.

The 10 best souvenirs to have from Brazil
After sharing with you 20 traditional things you must do in Brazil a while back, many readers have asked me what’s interesting or what are the most popular souvenirs to bring from Brazil. Of course, the best souvenirs you can take back home with you are the memories you made and the pictures you took, but if are looking for more, then you will find ideas below.
Being a Brazilian, sometimes I find myself also buying souvenirs when I visit my country for friends here in Germany. There are thousands of different souvenirs to buy in Brazil, some are heavy, small, breakable, creative, common, useful, interesting, and even stylish. I’m sure you will find an ideal souvenir to bring back home during your visit, but as a Brazilian, to me, here are the 10 best souvenirs to have from Brazil, they represent the country very well and are probably the most popular Brazilian souvenirs you can get:
If back in your house you have the chance to use a hammock, don’t hesitate to get one, it is one of the coolest and useful souvenirs you can have from Brazil. They can be found in many colors and styles, the best ones are handmade and you can get them at the local markets, especially in cities of the Northeast region.
A Christ the Redeemer’s statuette
Even many Brazilians have this one at home after a visit to Rio de Janeiro, where they can be found in many sizes and made with different materials, varying from glass to wood. You can buy them not only at the famous landmark, but in many other places in the city, which sell souvenirs.
Nosso Senhor do Bonfim wristbands
These wristbands were created way back in 1809 and have a very interesting story. They are 47cm long, the exact measurement of the Jesus Christ’s statue found in the most famous church of Bahia, the church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim in Salvador. Early on it was used on the neck, as a necklace, but in the 60’s it was already common to wear on the wrists.
The cotton wristbands have the phrase “Lembrança do Senhor do Bonfim – Bahia” written on them, which means “souvenir of Senhor do Bonfim – Bahia”, and should be wrapped twice around the wrist and tied with 3 knots. To each knot you should make a wish to be kept in secret, which will be accomplished by the time the band breaks naturally. They are found in different colors, and each one represents a different Orisha (African ancestral).
Brazilian Flip Flops
Brazil is home of the well-known Havaianas, the most famous flip flops brand in the world. As you may imagine, buying them in Brazil is cheaper than anywhere else, and these are one of the best souvenirs you can have from the country. Apart from Havaianas, there is also its biggest competitor, Ipanema.
They are found in several colors and shapes, and often have special editions and different themes. I must confess that every time I visit my country I bring at least one new pair for me.
A Brazilian swimsuit
For the girls, a bikini, for the guys, a sunga . Brazil is one of the most famous countries for beachwear, especially when it comes to bikini, very associated with the country. As a Brazilian living abroad and who have traveled to many other countries, I can say that to me there is no bikini like the ones from my home country. Why not get one as a souvenir? In fact, you can already put it into use right there!
A Brazilian sarong
Image: Lojas Renner
Also very famous among Brazilians, though not as a souvenir, but for personal use on the beach. Sarong, or canga , are found in different colors and prints, and can be bought in beachwear stores, as well as on the beach and local markets. These are traditional from the Northeast region of the country and are normally used with a swimsuit or for laying on the beach sand.
An official Brazil’s football team jersey
Why not? It’s not because we lost 7×1 against Germany at home that getting our official jersey is a bad idea. After all, we still are number 1 in the world, the only national team with 5 stars!
Imagine having a beautiful image of Brazil in your home and at the same time help the local artists? There are beautiful paintings being made and sold everyday, not only in galleries, but also on the beach and markets. The only problem is choosing one.
The typical Brazilian drink used to make caipirinha, cachaça is a great souvenir. At any supermarket you will find different brands, special editions and even special packaging sold with different prices, from cheap to very expensive. The most popular brands are Pitú, Ypióca, Sagatiba and Colonial, however, if you are looking for the best, here they are .
A caipirinha kit
Image: Shoptime
For the big fans of the drink, know that you can get a caipirinha kit to reproduce the drink back home, not that you really need one, but why not? It’s a cool and original souvenir from the country where caipirinha was invented. Cheers!

Make sure you purchase a couple of packages while you are there, especially if you are a big coffee drinker. It will make you fall in love with coffee all over again.
Cachaça is made of sugar cane and it is the most popular alcoholic beverage in this country. Really amazing color and clarity
The amethyst heart pendant is just the right size, complemented by the classic sterling silver chain
Handblown art glass paperweight, 'Confetti Canary'
A lovely gift.
I have now purchased three of these lovely Confetti Canary paper weights as well as one of the solid canary ones, all as gifts. They have been well received, and they are wonderful small, thoughtful gifts.

This is my 3rd gemstone tree this month. I absolutely love these and now my sister wants them too. Very well priced and beautifully crafted. Thank you so much.

The Best Places to Buy Souvenirs in Rio de Janeiro
There’s nothing quite like buying a few well-chosen souvenirs to keep alive those tropical memories of your stay in Rio de Janeiro ; it’s also a great place to buy gifts to take home for family and friends. Check out the following places for the best souvenirs the Brazilian city has to offer.
1. ipanema hippie market.
Market, Bazaar
Havaianas Stores
Besides the famous Brazilian bikini, no other fashion item says Rio de Janeiro quite like the legendary Havaianas flip-flops. Responsible for protecting a good majority of the local feet, they are also great souvenirs to take home to bring back memories of those beach days. There are plenty of Havaianas stores across the city, each one stocking a huge variety of styles, colours, and patterns. Some of the stores stock the glam style of Havaianas, decorated with jewels and gems, for those looking for something fancier.

2. Saara Market
3. Feira do Rio Antigo
Held on the first Saturday of every month, the Feira do Rio Antigo is a beloved monthly fair in Lapa. It’s famous for selling an array of antiques, vintage items, and retro clothes. The real joy at this fair is browsing through the troves of antiques to discover some true gems among the rough. There are also several stalls of artisanal crafts such as leather shoes, handmade bags, and ornaments, all of which make great souvenirs of Rio.
Feira do Rio Antigo, R. do Lavradio, 51-71, Centro, Rio de Janeiro
4. Feira Nordestina São Cristóvão
Market, Food Court
Rio de Janeiro’s largest market has heaps of great souvenirs for you to choose from. The market is centred around products from the northeast of the country, with typical items including bottles of melted butter, preserved chilies, ornaments of Bahian women, hammocks, and artisanal bags. Spend the day browsing through the many fascinating stalls at Feira Nordestina São Cristóvão , picking up wonderfully exotic items to remember your trip. Later, head to the food court to eat typical Bahian food and enjoy the live music and dancing to forró , a type of music that defines the northeast of Brazil.

Cadeg is a warren of stalls, restaurants, and bars, and a great place to pick up unique souvenirs. The market opens in the early hours of the morning for flower-sellers who start their business of selling their thousands of blooms before the sun comes up. Later on in the day, the other stalls open, selling clothes, ornaments, artisanal items, food, and religious artifacts. In addition to being a great place to pick up interesting souvenirs, the market is known for being a gastronomic hub, with traditional Portuguese food and cheap yet delicious green wines.

Copacabana and Ipanema beach provide a great locations to pick up souvenirs. During the day, beach vendors wander up and down the sands, selling items such as patterned beach towels, colourful bikinis, and homemade jewelry. In the evenings, sellers lay their products out on the promenade to catch the early evening crowd who are passing by. Here, you can pick up unique items such as ornaments made from woven palm leaves, homemade jewelry, and one-of-a-kind beach attire.
