Covering orlando, central florida, and the theme parks, out and about: broadway takes orlando “into the woods” and it’s a hilarious journey.

“Into the Woods ” is at Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts in Orlando this week, and this literally straight-from-Broadway production sizzles and snaps with laughs and a few heart-tugs.

The production is based on a book by James Lapine with Stephen Sondheim’s music and lyrics, and the story weaves the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales of “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel,” and “Jack and the Beanstalk,” all tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning to “Rapunzel”) and their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them.

  • A take on the serious themes of the iconic fairy tales that isn’t afraid to let the humor loose, even when it’s slightly inappropriate.
  • Direction from Lear deBessonet, who could win a Tony Award for the show, which keeps the production of a Broadway quality, even though it’s on tour.
  • The cast, featuring leads Montego Glover (the Witch), Gavin Creel (doing double-duty as Prince Charming, and The Wolf), Sebastian Arcelus and Stephanie J. Block as the Baker and his Wife, and Katy Geraghty (Little Red Riding Hood), were giving 110% at all times, helping to tell the story both singing and with their body movements.

In fact, the entire cast was so good it was hard to single out a favorite or two, but I do need to give nods to Geraghty who was a hilarious child-like terror, Creel who was subtly sassy as both the Prince and the Wolf, Glover for her amazing voice, and Block who veered delightfully from meek and responsible to a wanton single-minded woman on a mission.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t single out Jack’s cow, Milky White, who stole almost every scene it was in thanks to its puppeteer Kennedy Kanagawa. Those side-eyes!

The show is in Orlando until this Sunday, June 11, 2023, and it’s the only Florida stop on the limited tour. Tickets (which start at $49.75) and more information can be found at DrPhillipsCenter.org .

Tiger Woods completed 72 holes at this year’s Masters Tournament. Although the score wasn’t ideal, there are reasons for optimism heading into the season’s next three major championships.

Throughout Saturday’s third round, there was speculation on the Masters.com Featured Groups stream as to whether Woods could physically complete the tournament. It wasn’t easy, but he completed the walk, with Sunday marking his 100th competitive round at Augusta National.

Woods professed last fall an intention to play once a month on TOUR this season. He competed at The Genesis Invitational in February (withdrawing on the seventh hole of his second round due to the flu), but he didn’t compete in March, saying this week that he wasn’t physically ready. With the PGA Championship looming in mid-May, Woods indicated Sunday a focus on preparing for Valhalla Golf Club, where he memorably defeated Bob May in a 2000 playoff.

“I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst (U.S. Open), Valhalla and Troon (The Open), but that's kind of the game plan,” Woods said Sunday. “I heard there are some changes at the next couple sites. So got to get up there early and check them out.

“Just keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing. Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.”

Woods brought his son Charlie onto the driving range Sunday morning as his “swing coach,” a memory he will cherish forever. The two have paired together at the previous four PNC Championships, and Charlie Woods has displayed a natural affinity for the game. The younger Woods also recently won a Florida high school team championship with The Benjamin School and competed in a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches in February.

Woods also shared a moment at the par-3 16th hole on Sunday with longtime CBS broadcaster Verne Lundquist, who is calling his 40th and final Masters and has voiced several memorable Woods calls through the years, including the “In your life, have you seen anything like that!” chip-in birdie from behind the 16th green in 2005, en route to a playoff victory over Chris DiMarco.

Woods started fast Sunday with a birdie at the par-5 second, but he bogeyed the third and made triple bogey at the par-4 fifth after a penalty off the tee. He made bogey on No. 6, but he closed with 11 pars in his final 12 holes, his only additional dropped shot coming at the par-5 15th, where his wedge shot flew past the green and he couldn’t get up and down.

“It doesn't take much to get out of position here,” Woods said Sunday. “Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot yesterday and a couple times today. It was a good week. It was a good week all around. I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, yesterday it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to.

“Today the round that I … the way that Tom (Kim, 6-under 66) is playing, I thought I had in my system. Unfortunately, I didn't produce it.”

After a WD during the third round of last year’s Masters, leading to ankle surgery shortly thereafter, Woods reached the finish line in 2024. A good week, it was.

Tiger Woods Is Optimistic on Eve of Masters, But Reps Have Been Few

The five-time winner at Augusta hasn't been able to play once a month as he had planned, but a fellow Masters champ said Woods looks strong.

  • Author: Bob Harig

AUGUSTA, Ga. — His game wasn’t ready a month ago, so Tiger Woods skipped playing in a Florida golf tournament, like he admitted he hoped to do at one point at the beginning of the year.

Things change, and that wasn’t possible, but Woods is here now, at the place where he’s won five times and created numerous memories, several of which he recounted during a news conference on Tuesday at Augusta National.

Following a nine-hole practice round with Justin Thomas and Fred Couples, Woods acknowledged that “I ache. I ache every day.” But he did not discount his abilities, either.

“If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” Woods said when asked what he believed he was capable of this week at the Masters. Then, smiling, he said: “Do I need to describe that any more than that, or are we good?”

Everyone knew what he meant.

Woods is almost never going to admit anything less than trying to win, and his good look in practice won’t quell any such hype going into this 26th Masters start, where he has a chance to set a tournament record he shares with Gary Player and Couples and make a cut for the 24th consecutive time.

But he’s played just 24 holes of official golf this year and after withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational during the second round due to the flu, his plans to add a tournament in Florida did not materialize.

“Well, I wasn't ready to play,” Woods said. “My body wasn't ready. My game wasn't ready. And I thought that when I was at Hero (in December), once a month would be a really nice rhythm. Hasn't worked out that way. But now we have major championships every month from here through July. So now the once-a-month hopefully kicks in.”

Asked specifically what kept him from playing, Woods said: “The body's just—the things that just flare up. Again, the training that we have to do at home, it changes from day-to-day basis. Some days I just feel really good, and other days, not so much.”

A few weeks after withdrawing from the Masters during a delay in the third round last year, Woods had surgery on his right ankle, a subtalar fusion, which put him out of competition for the rest of the regular season but brought some stability to the area.

Woods suffered numerous injuries to his leg, ankle and foot in the February 2021 car crash that has kept him from playing more than seven times worldwide in the aftermath.

“Well, the ankle doesn't hurt anymore,” he said. “It's fused. It's not going anywhere. So that's fine. It's other parts of my body that now have to take the brunt of it. So, yeah, once he put the rods in there, it's good to go.

“But, the back, the knee, other parts of the body have to take the load of it, and just the endurance capability of walking a long time and being on my feet for a long time.”

Since winning the Masters here in 2019 for his 15th major title , Woods has not been a contender, finishing well back during his title defense in 2020, missing the event in 2021 due to the car crash, remarkably making the cut in 2022 but shooting a pair of weekend 78s to finish 47th and then withdrawing last year.

Making the task more difficult is Augusta National itself.

“It's certainly one of the more hillier walks that we have,” Woods said. “You just don't realize it. And where the clubhouse is perched to the bottom of 12 green, we're playing on a hillside, and we're just meandering back and forth across that hillside.

“So it is a long walk. I think I've done just over six and a half miles here. But I think that it's—more than anything, it's the shaping of shots. These are things that I can't simulate in Florida. We're pretty flat. So I try the best I can on certain hillsides back at home to hit shots. But you just got to come out here and do it.

“Then, on top of that, playing on bent (grass) and the movement of these greens, that is something that, because I haven't played a whole lot on Tour, I don't really get a chance to see that very often. I'm home on Bermuda all the time. And so that's another factor into this week.”

None of it seemed to bother Woods in his limited practice this week. He’s been on the course for three days, playing nine holes on Monday and Tuesday and walking the front nine on Sunday while just chipping and putting.

Couples, 64, is making his 39th Masters start. The 1992 champion has played numerous practice rounds with Woods here and liked what he saw.

“I don't stare at his gait much, but he just hits it so good. He hit a tree there, so I actually outdrove him on No. 9, but the sound of the ball—I said, good swing, and he hit it fat and it hit off the front of the ninth green and it trickled down ...

“So I know the deal. The lie is below your feet. It's just hard. He said his back is doing O.K. I think last year it was so bad that a lot of things just wore him down, playing in that rain, moving around slowly, sluggish. The tee times where maybe he couldn't get work done, and we were out here and doing all that.

“But this year he looks strong, and he's excited to play, and I think he looks really, really good.”

In a news conference that lasted 24 minutes, Woods did not get any questions about his role on the PGA Tour Policy Board and his recent visit with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Public Investment Fund of Saudia Arabia which backs LIV Golf.

Jon Rahm, the defending Masters champion who is now with LIV, did get asked about the state of affairs and said at one point: “I still love the PGA Tour and I still hope for the best and I still hope that at some point I can compete there again.”

Rahm said that he hoped his move to LIV might hasten some sort of agreement but said “unfortunately it’s not up to me.”

Woods was also asked about the U.S. Ryder Cup captaincy, a decision that is well past the usual time it would be announced for the 2025 competition at Bethpage Black.

“We’re still talking about it,” said Woods, who has previously stated it was too soon to discuss due to his role on the policy board. He noted that he would be speaking to Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, whose organization determines the captain.

“It's something that Seth and I are going to sit back and talk about it after this event,” he said. “I said I'm going to be busy for a couple weeks, so let me focus on getting through this week and hopefully getting another jacket, and then we can sit back and talk about it next week.”

Woods is playing the first two rounds with Jason Day and Max Homa and tees off at 1:24 p.m. on Thursday.

Tiger Woods finishes Masters with his highest score as a pro, sets sights on upcoming majors

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Tiger Woods finished the Masters on Sunday with a record he could do without, walking off the course with a 16-over 304, his highest 72-hole score in a career that spans three decades.

Woods’ previous high was 302 at the Memorial in 2015. He has only failed to break 300 one other time at the Masters two years ago when he shot 78-78 on the weekend and finished at 301.

Recommended Videos

Despite the score, Woods called it a “good week" and said he's going to begin preparing for the other three majors including the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and the British Open in July.

“This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I’m going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon,” Woods said. “But that’s kind of the game plan.”

Overall, he wasn't unhappy with how he played.

“Coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday,” Woods said. “Unfortunately (Saturday) didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to."

It hardly mattered to the crowd.

The 48-year-old Woods, who is still dealing with the effects of numerous surgeries that have impacted his body and limited his playing time on the PGA Tour, received a huge roar from the crowd as he pitched close to the hole on No. 18 and made par.

Wearing his traditional Sunday red, Woods tipped his hat the crowd.

Woods has played only 24 holes in one tournament going into the Masters

“I’m just going to keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing,” Woods said. “Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.”

Woods was in last place among the 60 players who made the cut when he finished. The previous time he finished in last place was in the 2020 Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

Still, the patrons flocked to see the man who took golf's popularity to new heights, even if he isn't been the dominant player he once was at Augusta National.

Woods hasn't really been competitive here since 2020 when he finished tied for 38th one year after his stunning fifth victory at age 43.

He finished 13 over two years ago, then was forced to withdraw in 2023 in the third round due to injuries that weren't helped by the cold, rainy weather that had taken an obvious physical toll on his body.

For a short time this week Woods showed glimpses of past greatness, relying mostly on his knowledge of the course.

He played the first two rounds in 1 over to make the cut for a record 24th time. But the final two rounds were a struggle for Woods, who posted his worst round of his career at a major with an 82 on Saturday.

“It’s always nice coming back here because I know the golf course, I know how to play it,” Woods said. “I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it’s never quite the same as getting out here and doing it.”

He played the final 36 holes in 15 over, shooting 77 on Sunday in his 100th career round at the Masters.

Before the round Woods appeared to receive some swing tips from his 15-year-old son Charlie on the practice range.

Things started off well enough, but that didn't last long.

After playing the first two holes in 1 under, Woods made a bogey on No. 3 before things started to unravel on the par-4 fifth hole when he took an unplayable lie and had to be driven back to the tee box in a golf cart to hit again. He wound up with a triple-bogey 7.

He added another bogey on the 6th.

He nearly chipped in from the sand on No. 16, giving fans a thrill and bringing back fond memories of his iconic chip in in 2005 en route to the fourth of his five championships at Augusta.

Woods said the toughest part of the week for him was battling the wind, which reached 45 mph at times with gusts.

“What it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing,” Woods said. “It doesn’t take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot (Saturday) and a couple times today.”

The once-dominant Woods played with Neal Shipley, the only amateur to make the cut at the Masters.

It was a stark reminder of just how long Woods has been around.

Woods' streak of cuts made at the Masters began in 1997, before the 23-year-old Shipley was born.

Even with Woods being out of contention he still attracting the usual huge throng of fans eager just to get a glimpse of the player that became the face of the sport. Fans applaud after every Woods' shot — good or bad — and continue to shout encouragement his way.

Scottie Scheffler is a Masters champion again. And he’s never satisfied

into the woods tour orlando

By DOUG FERGUSON

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler manages enormous expectations so well because he never spends too much time thinking about the past or the future. The temptation was never so great at the Masters.

Behind him was a swift sequence of events that put him in control at Augusta National when three of his closest challengers made double bogey in the heart of Amen Corner. Ahead of him was the dreamy prospect of another Masters green jacket.

All he thought about was the 215 yards between his golf ball and the flag on the par-5 13th late in the afternoon April 14. His lead was two shots over Ludvig Aberg, the 24-year-old Swede who a year ago was in college and played his first Masters as the No. 9 player in the world.

Scheffler was oblivious to everything except what was in front of him.

“He just seemed focused on doing Scottie Scheffler things,” said Ted Scott, the caddie who has been on Scheffler’s bag during his amazing ride to the top of the golf world.

“That’s what he said on 13. He goes, ‘Should we go for it?’ I said: ‘Absolutely. Why don’t we do what we do and what we’re good at?’ He’s the best ball striker in the world,” Scott said. “He hit an unbelievable 4-iron, which is just incredible to that small target.

“Those targets seem big when you’re caddying for Scottie Scheffler.”

The ball hit the safe part of the green, setting up a two-putt birdie to extend his lead. His wedge on the 14th settled a foot away for another birdie. And then he made another.

Before long, Scheffler twice slipped into the green jacket — first in Butler Cabin, and then on the 18th green, both times accompanied by a wide smile.

And to think it was only two years and two months ago that Scheffler was trying to win for the first time on the PGA Tour. Since then, he has picked up 10 victories worldwide and has finished in the top three a staggering 44% of the time.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had a guy out there that tees it up and he’s supposed to win, and he wins,” Xander Schauffele said. “I feel like we’ve had a bit of a bounce-back with three or four guys for that top spot. And he’s cruising along pretty nicely.”

He is No. 1 in the world by a margin not seen since peak Tiger Woods. As for expectations, consider Scheffler and Woods are the only players to twice win the Masters as the No. 1 player.

It only looks like Scheffler is cruising.

Remember, it was just two months ago when his position as the No. 1 player in the world was in question because he couldn’t seem to make a putt. Scheffler spent a lot of energy trying to block out the noise, believing he was on the right track.

And then he won at Bay Hill by five shots, he won The Players Championship by coming from five shots behind, he missed a playoff in the Houston Open by one 5-foot putt and he won the Masters for the second time in three years.

Only three other players who were younger than the 27-year-old Scheffler have won a second green jacket — Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Woods.

Even before he started on April 14, Scheffler felt enough discomfort in his neck — the same area that nearly caused him to withdraw at The Players Championship — that he applied kinesiology tape. It was the first time since The Players he felt that, and he’s not sure why.

“I think my body was just reacting to the stress,” he said.

A trio of players tried to add to that. Aberg caught him with a 35-foot putt down the scary slope on the ninth hole, only for Scheffler to hit lob wedge that spun down the slope and was inches from going into the cup.

Collin Morikawa was tied for the lead until he put it in the bunker left of the ninth green, took two shots to get out and made double bogey. Morikawa made another bogey by putting his approach into the water on No. 11.

“I got greedy. Greed can get the best of us,” Morikawa said, speaking about his game but a noteworthy choice of words given golf’s current landscape.

Max Homa had a brief share of the lead, and he pulled one stroke behind with a shot to a foot on the 10th hole and a smart par on the 11th. And then he hit a shot to the par-3 12th that bounced over the back of the green and into the ivy bushes. He had to take a penalty drop and wound up making double bogey, from which he never recovered. It was a cruel break.

“The honest answer is it didn’t feel fair,” Homa said. “I hit a really good golf shot, and it didn’t feel fair. I’ve seen far worse just roll back down the hill.

“The professional answer is these things happen.”

And so the stage was set for Scheffler. His closing 68 was the second-best score April 14. His final margin was four shots. His standing in the game has never been greater. And even with his first child due to be born by the end of the month, Scheffler doesn’t expect things to change.

The one trait that has never left him is his desire to win no matter much he has won. He was like that after he won his first PGA Tour title. He is like that even after two Masters.

“The guy is special,” Scott said. “He’s a different kind of special. I think we’re all seeing it, and we’re all questioning, ‘Where did this come from?’”

Odds are it has been there all along.
