Ocean Conservationists

Our Ocean Conservationists can be found working in the UK’s waters, the wider North East Atlantic and increasingly around the world. That’s because ORCA’s expertise is now being called on internationally, and the Ocean Conservationist programme has expanded to meet demand. These highly-trained specialists now deliver an increasing variety of marine wildlife experiences and activities on board cruise ships around the world - everywhere from the Arctic to the Antarctic and the Pacific to the Mediterranean. These passionate and dedicated individuals work to showcase the incredible diversity of wildlife that can be spotted from the decks of cruise ships, helping guests on board learn more about the marine environment.

ORCA not only has the opportunity to inspire people from all walks of life, but also collect vital scientific data that is actively being used to help protect whales and dolphins in our oceans.

Our Ocean Conservation programmes closer to home are a key part of ORCA's education and outreach work, and we deliver these in the North Sea, Hebrides, English Channel and Bay of Biscay each year. Working in close partnership with our long-standing friends at Brittany Ferries, DFDS, and Caledonian MacBrayne, ORCA’s Ocean Conservationists spend several months working at sea on their vessels, meeting tens of thousands of passengers while carrying out deck watches.

Ocean Conservationists educate and inspire passengers about the marine wildlife around them during their voyage by showing them the wonders of the ocean.

Our partners

Brittany ferries, caledonian macbrayne, fred .olsen, hurtigruten expeditions, p&o cruises, 2023 cruises.

ORCA teams help to enhance and enrich your cruise experience, by conducting deck watches for whales and dolphins from the open decks, and by delivering a series of informative lectures. We look forward to seeing you on board!

Click on the button below to find out the cruises ORCA teams will be on in 2023 and 2024.

Ocean Conservationist Training Course

ORCA Ocean Conservationists are talented, inspiring individuals who work on ferries and cruise ships, delivering exciting wildlife experiences and learning opportunities for guests and passengers. Travelling around the world, they deliver innovative education programmes teaching people from all backgrounds about the marine environment whilst at the same time collecting important scientific data about some of the richest habitats in the ocean.

ORCA runs an intensive programme that covers a variety of fundamental skills, at the end of which participants will be able to join ORCA's Ocean Conservationist programme. Topics include:

Introducing ORCA, our history and exploring our high-impact marine conservation work

Discussing conservation issues facing the ocean and threats to whales and dolphins

Learning science communication skills, covering strategies and techniques for communicating complex scientific concepts to a variety of different audiences

Exploring ORCA’s different cruise and ferry programmes globally and understanding the array of activities delivered at-sea, including how to deliver exceptional wildlife experiences

Understanding life on a ship, including expectations, etiquette and key procedures for working at sea

Third time and was amazing as usual very clean, food was amazing staff friendly and helpful always feel relaxed after manicurist highly recommend x

Dear 463pammiem, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with DFDS. We are so thrilled to read such kind feedback regarding your journey with us! We look forward to welcoming you back on board again for another great experience! Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

After doing Hull-Rotterdam there are pluses and minuses Pluses - The journey from port to city centre isn't as long as P&O Staff on the check in desk very helpful and friendly - moved us to a room near our friends that were in a disabled room Room nice and spacious and clean - beds quite comfortable - need new pillows Minuses- Nowhere to get a drink or food in the departure terminal so if you get there early its not good Arriving on ship is confusing as there was no-one around giving us directions to our room Staff on board just walking around and hiding down corridors on their phones - cant be bothered to help Buffet evening meal was atrocious - no order to it - just looked like it had been thrown together - so much mixture of cuisines but not much of it. Not worth £23.50. Breakfast is the same really.... just basic and nowhere to get eggs / omelettes made fresh Had to ask twice to order drinks. Bar prices are very high. To be honest they were quite shockingly high. Outward journey was delayed by 3 hours which didn't give us very long at all in Amsterdam which was a shame but no-ones fault I suppose. More negatives than positives and I think in future will stick with P&O

Dear Beverleyconnor, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with DFDS onboard our Newcastle to Amsterdam crossing. We are very disappointed to read there was more negatives than positive on your trip. Your honest and detailed feedback regarding your journey with us, is very much valued and appreciated and I can ensure you your comments will be used to address any areas of development but also to ensure we are continuously improving our customers overall experience and journey with us. We do hope should you return and travel with us in the future you will see how fabulous our products and services are and your experience next time will to the high standards DFDS pride themselves on. Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

Late sailing to Amsterdam. Very limited range of beers on tap. No free WiFi at all. No shower gel. Dated ferry. Comparison between Britanny ferries and Dfds is like night and day. Also higher prices. As for duty free shop you're cheaper going to a supermarket. All in all Not a pleasant experience. Will think twice before using them again.

Dear Maxheadroom00, Thank you for taking the time to rate your experience with DFDS. We would like to discuss your rating and comments further. Please could you contact us at [email protected] Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

We have used this line previously but on this occasion it was just the return journey from Amsterdam to Newcastle. Previously we had been very happy with the service, accommodation and food provided, but this occasion it was even better. The boarding was easy and efficient, the cabin was clean and comfortable but the food, well it was AMAZING. We dined in their main restaurant and had a truly fine dining experience with each dish tasty, presented well and packed with flavour. The service was exceptional and, coincidentally , we were welcomed into the main seating area by a waiter ( Ronnie) we had when we cruised around South America a few years ago AND, he recognised us, which was just incredible. He , like all the other staff, provided an upmarket service more akin to a cruise style service , which only enhanced our ferry trip. Well done to DFDS for employing great staff and delivering a top notch service. We will try to use this route more often in our travels. Breakfast was also a lovely delight and above the usual offerings elsewhere on a ferry.

Dear DavidC378, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with DFDS onboard our Amsterdam - Newcastle crossing. We are so pleased to read such kind and detailed feedback regarding your journey with us, it's very much valued and appreciated to know you have taken the time to deliver such informative information directly to us, and to our potential new passengers who were looking to travel with us. We pride ourselves on the standard and quality of our Mini Cruise offering and all that we provide onboard, therefore, to read you had a great experience with us really leaves us feeling very positive. We couldn't agree more, our team are assets to our company, and we are very delighted to note they have provided you a great service during your crossing. We look forward to welcoming you back on board again for another great experience! Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

We felt right from the start we were valued customers The cabin was lovely The staff also really helpful and professional We went to the restaurant and it wasn’t enormous and noisy Again the staff were attentive and helpful And the food was excellent Instead of feeling like ‘cattle’ at the airport or a nuisance like you do on PandO ferries this was excellent Normally we access mainland Europe from Hull to Rotterdam but not in the future , we will drive the extra 50 miles to leave from Newcastle on this delightful vessel 10/10

Dear I2014DPlauriem, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with DFDS onboard our Newcastle to Amsterdam crossing. We are so over the moon to read such kind feedback regarding your journey with us, it's very much valued and appreciated to know you have taken the time to deliver such great information directly to us, and to our potential new passengers who were looking to travel with us. We look forward to welcoming you back on board again for another great experience! Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

Cabin not cleaned properly, dirty towels and bed linen, food was VERY poor quality and the same foods were served on outward and return crossings, Chips were the only potato option. Disembarkation was totally unorganised, almost like a stampede, and no social distancing at all. The so called security organising staff just talked among themselves and were VERY rude and abrupt when addressing passengers upon disembarkation

Dear Angela, Thank you for taking the time to rate your experience with DFDS. We would like to discuss your rating and comments further. Please could you contact us at [email protected] Kind regards, Amiee Customer Experience Specialist

Princess Seaways ferry Wiki

Previously, the vessel was operated under the names Peter Pan (1986-1993), Spirit of Tasmania (1993-2002), MS Spir (2002-2003), Fjord Norway (2003-2006), Princess of Norway (2006-2011) and Princess Seaways (since 2011). From the same Peter Pan-Class are the ferries King Seaways , GNV Cristal , GNV Atlas , Cotentin .

The ship was launched on November 30, 1985, and entered service on June 2, 1986 (inaugural cruise). Originally the ferry (Peter Pan) was owned by TT LINE. In the period 1993-2002, the ship was chartered (as Spirit of Tasmania) by Tasmania's Government for the Bass Strait daily crossings on the Australia-Tasmania route Melbourne - Devonport (travel time 15 hours). In September 2002, the vessel was laid up in Sydney NSW and put out on sale. In 2003, it was sold to FJORD LINE and drydock-refitted in Frederikshavn Denmark (at Orskov Yard). Renamed "Fjord Norway", in 2003-2005 the ferry served the Norway-Denmark route Bergen - Haugesund -Egersund-Hanstholm. In 2005-2006 it operated the UK-Norway route Newcastle-Bergen (via Stavanger ).

In November 2006, the ship was acquired by DFDS, renamed "Princess of Norway", drydock-refurbished in Frederikshavn and deployed for Newcastle-Bergen service (via Stavanger and Haugesund). The Newcastle-IJmuiden service started in May 2007, together with the fleet mate King of Scandinavia (now King Seaways).

The ship is powered by four MAK marine diesel engines (model Krupp 8M552) with combined power output 19,9 MW.

What is a mini cruise?

Lucy Chambers

Our mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam is our most popular break, and it’s easy to see why. It’s the perfect way to take a short break to one of the most fascinating cities in Europe , as well as enjoying a cruise experience onboard our comfortable, modern ships.

But what exactly is a mini cruise? And what can you expect if you book one? Well, in this blog we’ll take you through the trip from boarding to bed, to breakfast and back again.

All aboard!

Our ferry departs from the port in North Shields , near Newcastle, every evening at 5pm, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to check in and don’t forget your passport ! We recommend turning up at least 90 minutes before departure, but even earlier if you have any special requirements, and please let us know in advance if you do.

Not to worry though, as you can grab something to eat at our port café-bar , pick up a couple travel items at the shop or play on the arcade games. Royal Quays outlet is also just up the road, about 10 minutes away.

At check-in, you’ll be able to pre-purchase meals (and save compared to onboard prices), upgrade your cabin and add other extras if you wish. So if you’re looking for a way to make your mini cruise extra special, then look no further.

Once you’ve checked in you will pass through security and you’ll be able to board.

Eat, Drink and be Merry

Our ferries aren’t just a means of transport. At DFDS we believe that your journey should be every bit as fun as the time you spend in your destination, so that’s why we’ve packed our ships full with facilities and amenities to ensure you have a pleasant and enjoyable crossing.

You’ll find 4 restaurants to choose from, with food suitable for even the pickiest eaters. For a taste of the Mediterranean, head to Little Italy and choose from a range of pizza and pasta dishes suitable for all the family. The Blue Riband à la carte is a little bit posher, but no less accessible, with meat and poultry dishes, plus meals suitable for vegetarians. Our Explorers Steakhouse is one of our most talked-about dining experiences, serving up juicy, succulent steaks and sides still-sizzling to you.

7 Seas

Our most popular restaurant, however, is the 7 Seas all-you-can-eat buffet . So if you’re looking to stuff yourself silly on your journey, then look no further. You’ll have a choice of over 80 dishes from all over the world, plus delicious desserts and family-friendly meals too, so there’s no need to worry about finding something you’ll love.

Entertainment

Once you’ve had your fill of the delicious food onboard, we’re sure you’ll want to get your holiday started properly, and that’s why our ships are packed with things to do for travellers of all ages!

If you’re travelling with your family, then your kids will love the Kidz’ Club and the children’s entertainer, or our arcade games area. We also have shops onboard selling fashion, fragrance, toys, gifts and souvenirs , where you can spend some of your holiday money and indulge yourself in some retail therapy.

Our onboard cinema plays the latest Hollywood blockbusters and is perfect for couples or families, so you can grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy a thriller, a comedy or something a little bit more romantic.

Mermaid Skybar

For the grown-ups, we have a number of onboard bars where you can relax and grab a beer, sip a cocktail or a glass or two of fine wine. Our Columbus Club hosts live music and entertainment from a house band, acoustic troubadour and entertainer, and then later on you can dance the night away before you head back to your cabin for a good night’s sleep.

The most important meal of the day…

Those of you sensible enough to book a breakfast, and disciplined enough to get up early, before docking at 9.30am, can enjoy the delights of our breakfast buffet . With hot and cold breakfast options, including everything you’ll need to make yourself a full English, as well as pastries, fruit, cereal and plenty more.

Once you’ve disembarked, you’ll be directed to a number of transfer coaches which will take you from our port in IJmuiden to Amsterdam , approximately 40 minutes away, and then the day is yours to do with as you please!

Amazing Amsterdam

You’ll have anything up to 5 hours in Amsterdam, so more than long enough to explore but short enough that you won’t be left hanging around, and with so much to do in the Dutch capital, the hardest thing will be deciding on what you pack into your day.

Amsterdam was home to some of the most famous artists in history, and now is home to some of Europe’s foremost art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum with its collection of Rembrandt works and the Van Gogh Museum , hosting the great eponymous artist’s most brilliant masterpieces.

Take a cruise through the city’s canals and in just an hour you can see 100 of the city’s highlights . It’s a great way to get to know the city if it’s your first time, or to see the sights in an entirely new way if you’ve been before.

The Dutch capital is also a great shopping destination, with areas such as the 9 Streets including everything from boutiques to brands, and is well-stocked for bars and restaurants as well as Brown Cafés , similar to English pubs, and Grand Cafés , which are a little more ornate, and a great place to people-watch.

Between 3 and 4pm, our coaches will arrive in Amsterdam to pick you up. Your driver will have told you where to report back to when you first arrived in Amsterdam in the morning. These coaches will whisk you back to port so you can enjoy another night onboard, before arriving back in North Shields at 9am the next morning.

Whew, what a fun, non-stop trip!

Themed Mini Cruises

Our mini cruise is our most popular short break, and our themed mini cruises are another way to enjoy a short break to Amsterdam with a cruise experience.

Our North Sea Sounds music cruises include concerts from world-famous music artists and DJs. In the past we’ve welcomed ABC, The Christians, the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, Smoove & Turrell and plenty more onboard to entertain our customers as they sail.

If you’re an animal lover then our Amsterdam Artis Zoo mini cruise is ideal for you. You’ll spend a day at one of Europe’s oldest and most well-renowned zoos, with hundreds of animals of all species and types to discover. Alternatively, our Marine Wildlife mini cruise – in association with dolphin and whale charity ORCA – will give you an education on the animals it’s possible to see from the deck of our ship, including dolphins, whales, birds and more.

Our Halloween cruise is enormously popular, with a hotly-contested fancy dress competition and other themed fun, while our New Year’s Eve mini cruise includes 3 nights onboard, plus an open bar on New Year’s Eve, and the chance to see the famous Amsterdam fireworks at midnight from the deck!

So if all of this has got you in the mood for a quick jaunt to the Dutch capital, then be sure to head to our website for more information, ideas and inspiration!

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
