Water buses to and from Cannes and the Lérins Islands

4 water bus companies provide sea transport: Compagnie Riviera Lines, Horizon, Trans Côte d'Azur and Planaria. The first three provide services to île Sainte-Marguerite. Trans Côte d'Azur also provides boat trips to visit the Corniche d'Or, Monaco and Saint-Tropez. Planaria is owned by monks and the only water bus company to sail to île Saint-Honorat.

Away from the high-fashion boutiques of La Croisette, you can uncover the cobbled alleyways of Le Suquet, the old town. The town has two ports, Vieux Port de Cannes and Port Pierre Canto. From here, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to yachting day trips.

Île Saint-Honorat

The second largest of the Lérins Islands, Île Saint-Honorat is the domain of a monastic order who’ve lived here since the early Middle Ages. The pine-scented trail that runs the circumference of the island leads past tiny chapels and rocky coves towards the cloistered monastery, a haven of peace and quiet. The only restaurant on the island, La Tonnelle, serves up fine dining in an equally fine natural setting.

A narrow channel separates Île Sainte-Marguerite from Île Saint-Honorat and, like its neighbour, the island is a welcome respite from the crowds of the coast (although, both are popular with day trippers in summer). Here, at the Royal Fort, the Man in the Iron Mask was incarcerated for 11 years – locked up from the cool swimming spots and leafy eucalyptus and pine-framed trails that crisscross the 3km (2mi) long island. Today, the fort is open for visitors. Inside, the Sea Museum traces the maritime heritage of the islands.

Cannes Underwater Eco-Museum

In the shallow waters off Île Sainte-Marguerite, leading British underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor has submerged – at depths of up to 5m (16ft) – towering portraits of six Cannes residents. In doing so, he’s established the first underwater museum in the Mediterranean. You’ll have to swim out from the shore to find the exact location, but you can do so with just your snorkeling gear. Entry is free.

Mandelieu-la-Napoule

At the western end of the Bay of Cannes, Mandelieu-la-Napoule is another popular pleasure port and a recommended base for watersports such as jet skiing and parachuting. The impressive Château de La Napoule dates from the Middle Ages and was restored last century under its current American owners. Today, as a foundation dedicated to the promotion of international arts and culture, the impressive building houses a museum and cafe (open April to September).

Juan-les-Pins

In summer, the beachfront at Juan-les-Pins transforms into one long stretch of waterside restaurants, with inviting sun loungers arranged in neat rows leading down to the shore. With its own jetty, restaurant Plage Belles Rives at the five-star Hôtel Belles Rives serves a selection of local flavours at the water’s edge. Jazz à Juan festival in July, running since 1960, is a highlight of the summer calendar and attracts some of the biggest names in the genre to the beachfront stage.

Cap d’Antibes

Towering gates obscure the grand residences of Cap d’Antibes from passing eyes, but there’s plenty for the public to enjoy on this leafy peninsula. Take the coastal path that starts at Plage de la Garoupe and curves around the headland towards the Belle Epoque Villa Eilenroc (open Wednesdays and Saturdays), or explore the nature trails of the Garoupe plateau, which shelter a small chapel and lighthouse. The brightly coloured fishing boats at Plage de l’Olivette make this small bay an atmospheric picnic spot.

Théoule-sur-Mer

The sheltered cove at Théoule-sur-Mer is popular with families who appreciate the soft sandy beach and translucent waters of Plage du Château adjacent to the port. Dine with your feet in the sand at Marco Polo, a restaurant and private beach which has occupied the same stretch of sand since 1949. Fill your basket with local specialties at the Provençal market, held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings year-round.

Esterel Massif

The earthy-red rocks of the Esterel Massif range rise high above the water between La Napoule and Saint-Raphaël. The coastal road is one of the most spectacular drives in the region, but navigating it by water gives access to hidden coves to cool down in during a hot summer’s day. Coastal paths are marked out, as are interior hiking and cycling routes.

Saint-Tropez

Sleepy fishing village no more (especially in summer), Saint-Tropez is synonymous with French Riviera glitz and glamour. Grab one of the front-row tables at Café Senequier on the port for a spot of people-watching. In the narrow streets full of chic boutiques, you’ll find La Tarte Tropezienne, home of the cream-filled brioche pastry of the same name. The open-air markets on Place des Lices on Tuesday and Saturday mornings are an explosion of colourful local produce.

This boat leaves the Port three or six days a week at 9am and deposits you on the Ile Sainte Marguerite for the day. The return boat leaves at 6pm.

Nice to Saint Tropez by Ferry Boat

Saint Tropez is legendary for its sandy beaches (technically in neigboring Ramatuelle) and yacht-studded waters. It's also known for its legendary traffic jams. Avoid the hassle with this 2 1/2 hour trip along the coast that departs Nice at 9am and leaves Saint Tropez for the return trip at 4:30pm.

Saint Marguerite Island Boat Trip, Cannes

Discover a beautiful island with beaches, walking trails, nature areas, a museum and restaurants.

Just 15 minutes from the port at Cannes, Ile Sante Marguerite offers a complete getaway from the hustle of the mainland.

Swim in hidden coves, bird watch in the nature sanctuary or visit the museum of the sea. Sainte Marguerite is the largest of the four Lérins islands and is where the Man in the Iron Mask was held, as well as many other prisoners, in the Fort Royal.

Departures are daily from Cannes from April through to September. First departure is 9am, and are every half hour on the hour and half hour, with last departure at 16:30. The last return from the island to Cannes is 18:00.

Sainte-Marguerite Island is the largest of the Lérins Islands. As soon as you set foot on the island, you will be taken in by its imposing 152-hectare forest – the most visited in France – and its delicate fragrance of pine and eucalyptus. You can follow the signposted paths leading to the Étangs des Batéguier, or explore all the nooks and crannies of the Fort Royal. For those who prefer to relax, Sainte-Marguerite Island boasts 18 beaches.

The Corniche d’Or

Departing from the Port of Nice, take a boat along the Corniche d’Or, a renowned 40 km-long section of road between Fréjus and La Napoule. Discover an exceptional landscape, characterised by the contrast between the flamboyant colours of the tree-covered Estérel Massif, and the blue of the Mediterranean. Amongst this wild landscape, you can admire numerous coves and inlets, with their characteristic red sand.

Wander around the Place des Lices, enjoy a coffee outside a café whilst taking in the magnificent yachts towering in the port, or settle down on one of the town’s famous beaches.

Clinging to the rock overlooking the sea, Monaco combines ancient and ultra-modern architecture. You will have the chance to discover the Prince’s palace, its cathedral, and its oceanographic museum. Antibes is a charming coastal town located just 15 kilometers away from Cannes.

It’s known for its cobbled streets, small markets, and impressive ramparts that make it an ideal spot to wander around and explore.

The town is also home to the Picasso Museum, which houses more than 200 works by the famous artist who lived in Antibes during his later years.

This village is one of my favorites in France and is the perfect place to spend a day eating good food and exploring the art galleries and shops.

Grasse is a picturesque town that’s known as the perfume capital of the world, with many perfumeries offering tours and experiences that show visitors how this iconic scent is created.

The town also has plenty of other attractions including the Fragonard Perfumery Museum, Cathedrale Notre-Dame du Puy, and the beautiful hilltop village of Gourdon.

This town’s main attraction is the Grimaldi Castle, which towers over the area, and the Renoir Museum (Renoir lived had a home here!)

Don’t forget to stop by the Place de la Liberte for lively entertainment any evening! Once you tire of strolling around the city, you can take a boat out to Porquerolles, an island just off Toulon’s port.

Around here, Ventimiglia is a bit of a controversial theme, as it is not very organized and a bit chaotic (which I honestly think it’s part of its charm) and people often discuss if it is, in fact, worth visiting.

If you are having the same doubts, I recommend taking the train from Ventimiglia to Sanremo, a very nice town with lots of things to do.
