Shania Twain Polishes Off ‘Queen of Me’ Album Announcement With 2023 Tour Dates

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Shania Twain will release her sixth studio album Queen of M e on Feb. 3, her first full-length record in nearly six years. Alongside her Republic Nashville debut, the country icon will embark on a global arena tour spanning 49 dates, including stops at Nashville’s Geodis Park on June 7 and at New York’s Madison Square Garden on July 11.

“This new record is fun and celebrative, really on the other side of Now ,” Twain told Rina Sawayama in a recent Rolling Stone Musicians on Musicians interview . “I’m happy in my own skin. I’m celebrating that feeling, less apologetic for who I am and what I’ve become. This is me, and I like myself.”

She added: “A lot of it was written during the pandemic. There’s nothing better for me than to not have enough to do, because the first thing I do is pick up my guitar and start songwriting. Now I’ve got four albums’ worth. I’m not kidding.”

The Queen of Me Tour marks Twain’s first proper trip on the road since the completion of her Las Vegas residency. The span of shows kicks off on Friday, April 28, at Spokane Arena in Spokane, Washington. Twain will appear in Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Denver, Los Angeles, Montreal, Kansas City, Dallas, London, Dublin, and more. The tour concludes Sept. 26 at England’s Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Looks Like She Made It

How Shania Twain found love, her voice, and her rightful place in the pop music pantheon.

Shania Twain in a white Carolina Herrera dress and Stetson hat

“Sorry, I have to keep moving,” the country-pop legend Shania Twain says in the middle of our conversation, uncrossing her legs and stretching them out on the ivory sofa in front of her. Twain, who is the best-selling female country artist of all time, has just wrapped a photo shoot on the top floor of The Standard hotel, and she kicks off the Amina Muaddi platform stilettos she’s still wearing and drops an aside worthy of one of her sassy, universally beloved anthems: “It’s been a long day in these shoes.”

Of course, she says it in that famous, arched-eyebrow deadpan, the same one that launched a million bachelorette parties, karaoke nights, and drag shows with the rallying cry “Let’s go, girls.” At the height of her powers, on her 1997 global blockbuster album, Come On Over , Twain’s voice was at once withering enough to turn once-and-future Sexiest Man Alive Brad Pitt into a punchline (on her strutting send-up of the male ego, “That Don’t Impress Me Much”) and affecting enough to reduce an entire wedding guest list to tears (on timeless soft-rock ballads like “You’re Still the One” and “From This Moment On”). After a series of personal and professional setbacks, though — including illness that left her wondering whether she’d ever sing again — she nearly lost her voice for good.

That Twain is a fighter, though, is abundantly clear to anyone who has watched her recent Netflix documentary, Not Just a Girl . Or listened to her new song of the same name, which finds her triumphantly reclaiming that low, twangy croon of hers. Since she recovered from open-throat surgery in 2019, her voice has been feeling “way stronger,” she says, even if she’s accepted that it has undergone some changes. As she prepares to release her first new album in five years, she’s enjoyed getting reacquainted with her instrument. “I’ve had to relearn my voice in a lot of ways, because there are a lot of different elements to it that I didn’t even have before, that I play on and that I enjoy.”

Twain showcased her rich, resonant new sound in April, when Coachella headliner Harry Styles brought her out for an electric guest appearance at the festival. “In the car, with my mother as a child, this lady taught me to sing,” Styles gushed to a crowd of more than 100,000 people.

He added, to raucous cheers, “She also told me that men are trash.”

Shania Twain in Issey Miyake top and a Eugenia Kim hat all in black

Styles honoring Twain in such public, headline-generating fashion crystallized something too often left unspoken: Twain’s massive influence on the current generation of pop stars. Twain paved the way for Taylor Swift’s country-to-pop crossover, of course, but artists as disparate as Rihanna , Post Malone , Rina Sawayama , Orville Peck , and Halsey have all claimed Twain as an inspiration.

“I admire her confidence in her path, because she really just loved bringing people together,” Maren Morris — a country star who knows a thing or two about pop crossovers herself — says in an email. “She owned her femininity, but she didn’t hide behind it either. She had the songs to back it up.”

The author Marissa R. Moss says Twain’s influence came up constantly in her interviews for her recently released book, Her Country: How the Women of Country Music Became the Success They Were Never Supposed to Be .

“When [artists like Morris, Miranda Lambert, and Mickey Guyton] were younger, Twain was a very empowering force,” Moss says. Not only for her straight-talking songwriting, but also for her embrace of fashion and her demand that her “visual expression be taken seriously as a part of the art form.” (Hello, iconic leopard-print catsuit .)

I was never a pushover, ever in my life.

“I didn’t realize it until these kids became young adults and were actually in the public eye, talking about it,” Twain says back at The Standard. She sips from one of the glasses of chilled champagne that an assistant has put in front of us so unobtrusively it seems to have manifested out of the ether. “When I crossed over [from country to pop], they were part of an age group that, on the way to school, had the music on repeat. Or maybe it was the music that, as a kid, they wanted on repeat, that sort of annoying, ‘Oh no, play that again!’”

Masked country singer Orville Peck, who collaborated with Shania on their 2020 duet “Legends Never Die,” says in the Netflix documentary, “She reached through the stereo and made me feel safe when I was a young kid.” He’s alluding to her ubiquity during that era, and to the fact that queer listeners have long been drawn to Twain’s music, with its infectious confidence and playful, campy take on gender. (In her lively 2011 autobiography, From This Moment On , Twain notes that the first seeds of inspiration for “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” were planted in the mid-1980s, when she and her friends frequented Toronto’s gay bars and marveled at the local drag queens’ style.) As Katie Gavin, the lead singer and primary songwriter of the pop band Muna, told me in an email, Shania “has a really strong sense of self, and was probably so underestimated because of her genre and her gender, which queer people can definitely relate to.”

These days her influence is reciprocal, and Twain finds herself listening just as obsessively to the music of some of her disciples — Styles in particular. “I like the floating feeling the music gives off, this happy, peaceful, almost levitating feeling. And I love his voice, he’s a great vocalist.” Coachella was hardly the beginning of their friendship, though; Twain and Styles have been texting sporadically for years. After they met backstage at one of his early solo shows in New York City, Styles called Twain and asked if she would wish his mom a happy birthday. Naturally, she obliged. (Did Harry’s mum freak out? “No, she was very cool,” Twain says. “Very sweet and very cool.”)

Now 57, Twain is a petite but forceful presence: “I was never a pushover, ever in my life,” she says at one point in our conversation. She is exacting with her words, editing as she goes. Speaking of her early career, she tells me, “I took control wherever I could,” but then quickly revises. “Maybe control’s not the right word. I took charge . That’s way better. I took charge.”

That’s something she had to learn how to do long before she arrived in Nashville. Born Eileen Regina Edwards and raised mostly around Timmins, Ontario — a small city seven hours northwest of Toronto — Twain had the sort of hardscrabble childhood that made her relate deeply to the songs that Dolly Parton wrote about her own impoverished youth in the mountains of East Tennessee. When Twain was around four years old, her mother married Jerry Twain, a man of Ojibwa descent; young Eileen took his last name and recognized him as her father for the rest of her life. (“Stepfather, stepbrothers, we never used that vocabulary in our home,” Twain once said .) Their marriage was abusive, though, and from a young age, Eileen witnessed her father’s physical and emotional violence toward her mother. Her parents split up briefly when Eileen was a teenager — the so-called “Twain Gang” of four of her five siblings temporarily relocated to a women’s shelter in Toronto — but they eventually reconciled. Tragically, in 1987, Twain’s parents both died in a car accident while driving to bring food supplies to a camp at their reforestation company. At 22, Twain was suddenly the head of the household, left to support her three younger siblings.

She had been singing songs in local bars long before she could have been served there, and, after her parents’ passings, she found a steady gig performing at Deerhurst Resort in Ontario’s version of Vegas. There, she met a wardrobe mistress with a mellifluous name she’d never heard before, and which she’d later borrow as a stage name, Shania . Someone told her it meant “on my way,” and sure enough, she was: An influential music attorney saw her perform at Deerhurst and got her demo tape into the right hands. She was offered a deal if she’d move to Nashville. So she packed up her pickup and drove south, her first time leaving Canada.

The music industry loves a naive ingenue — the better to exploit you, my dear — but by the time she arrived in Music City, Twain had already survived more tribulations than most people do in a lifetime. “I think the maturity did help a lot,” she tells me now. “They didn’t mold me. I just showed up and I was already who I wanted to be. I was a bit older so I was not impressionable at that point. It was too late. I was already fully formed. I was open, but I was convinced of what I was made of and what were my greatest inspirations.”

Those inspirations included Parton and Willie Nelson, but also the glamorous and sensual Madonna, the hard-rocking, ass-kicking sisters of Heart. The Nashville of the early 1990s was not exactly a playground for cross-genre experimentation, though — especially if you were a woman. Recalls Twain, “I thought I was walking into a much more all-encompassing space, artistically.” Her first music video, for “What Made You Say That,” featured a gloriously early-’90s look that revealed, as she puts it in her autobiography, “maybe four inches” of midriff. Apparently this was enough to set off an epidemic of pearl clutching in Nashville: CMT briefly refused to play the video at all. (Adds Maren Morris, recalling this incident, “People were such prudes.”)

“There’s this belief that to be here in Nashville, you have to be constantly paying your dues in a very specific way,” says Moss. “You’re supposed to be humble, especially if you’re a woman — or God forbid a Black artist or a queer artist. You have to follow every mark on the path to ‘authenticity’ to even have a chance to be considered country enough for Music Row.”

Suffice it to say that didn’t impress Shania Twain much. Her clear-eyed confidence, unapologetic sexuality, and ownership of her artistic vision had a way of rankling the suits. “To me, [writing] was everything,” she says, recalling her dismay when she realized that she wasn’t expected to write her own material, especially as a female artist. “I’m like, ‘Are you kidding?’”

So she started working on some of her own songs, not with the usual squad of country songwriters but with a rock producer who’d gotten in contact with her out of the blue, Mutt Lange. Nobody at her label knew she was writing songs (let alone with Lange) until it was too late to turn back. “I’m like, ‘If I lose my deal, I lose my deal,’” Twain says. “That’s how convinced I was that it was time to make something more original.”

Her first single to reach No. 1 on country radio was “Any Man of Mine,” co-written with Lange, from her 1995 album, The Woman in Me . “Any Man” is flirtatious but assertive — a grown-ass woman’s come-hither song. “Any man of mine better disagree when I say another woman’s lookin’ better than me,” she sings amid a boot-stomping beat and a flurry of fiddles. “And when I cook him dinner and I burn it black, he better say, ‘Mmm, I like it like that.’” It was her first true hit, and she was about to turn 30, which gave her songs a lived-in, no-more-bullshit realism. Twain hadn’t needed to look far for a man who fit her description, though; after a whirlwind romance, in December 1993, she and Lange married.

Record executives didn’t mold me. I just showed up and I was already who I wanted to be.

Like CD-ROMs, the Spice Girls, and VH1’s Behind the Music , it is impossible to explain to someone born after the 1990s what an unavoidable cultural phenomenon Twain’s next album, Come on Over , was in the latter part of that decade. It was basically the Rumours of the CD era. Its seemingly endless run of 12 singles — on a 16-track album! — helped it sell more than 40 million copies worldwide. It is still one of the best-selling records of all time, which means it probably made some of the people who’d initially been skeptical of Twain’s vision a hell of a lot of money.

At least it made Twain and Lange buy-a-mansion-in-Switzerland money, which is exactly what they did. (“I think there were a lot of people who resented her for doing that and thought she was saying she was too good for Nashville or country music or something,” Moss says. She adds, “A lot of people take things personally here, strangely.”) Twain’s next album, 2002’s Up!, was also a huge success — it made her the first and only female artist in history to have three consecutive diamond-selling records in the United States — but after the 2001 birth of her son, Eja, Twain felt she’d earned a small retreat from the spotlight, making a quieter domestic life in a country where her every move wasn’t tabloid fodder.

Unfortunately, melodrama found her anyway. In 2008, she discovered that Lange was having an affair
with her best friend. They divorced shortly afterward, sending Twain into a tailspin of depression. “When I lost Mutt,” she says in the Netflix documentary, “the grief of that was similarly intense to losing my parents. It was like a death — a permanent end to so many facets of my life.”

As shattering as the breakup was, she had an even greater trial to endure around that time: the loss of her voice. “I don’t think I’ll ever meet a challenge like that again,” Twain tells me. When she first started experiencing dysphonia — a condition in which the vocal cords seize up and the voice becomes hoarse — she wasn’t sure what was going on. She later learned it was likely a somewhat rare long-term side effect of Lyme disease, which she contracted in 2003.

These were some of the darkest days of Twain’s life, and in the documentary she admits she didn’t “see any point in going on with a music career.” But in 2012, an unexpected opportunity arose: Lionel Richie, who didn’t realize Twain was struggling with dysphonia, asked her to appear on an upcoming duets album. He wanted to sing “Endless Love” with her, but Twain initially turned him down, doubting that her voice would be strong enough. Richie was persistent enough that she finally gave it a shot. “I had to be very vulnerable. I didn’t want to do it — I was like, ‘Would somebody just push me over the edge?’ But only I could jump off it.”

Working with Richie gave her the confidence to launch her spectacular Vegas residency, Shania: Still the One , and release her first studio album in 15 years, 2017’s Now . By the end of the Now tour, though, her voice was beyond fatigued. “I realized I couldn’t physically sustain the vocal workout I had to do every day,” she says. A doctor had been telling her for years about a drastic option that might help: open-throat surgery. Once again, she leapt.

“Not knowing what I was going to sound like when I was able to speak again was really scary,” Twain says. After the operation, she was instructed not to make a sound for three weeks. “The anticipation was crazy,” she recalls. “It wasn’t the three weeks of silence, it was the three weeks of waiting to see if it worked.” Happily, she was pleased with the results. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I can yell! I can be loud!’ It was so glorious.”

The story of her divorce has a happy — if wild — ending, too. Twain and FrĂ©dĂ©ric ThiĂ©baud, the former husband of the woman Lange cheated with, comforted each other through their respective heartbreaks, fell in love, and got married. ThiĂ©baud is there at The Standard for the photo shoot, flitting around in sneakers and a hoodie, making sure everyone on set is taken care of and, adorably, sneaking photos on his phone of each one of Twain’s looks like a doting Instagram husband.

Twain, ThiĂ©baud, and his daughter still live in Switzerland, but Vegas has been Twain’s home away from home for the past few years, during her second residency. She appreciates the glitz as much as the next person, as well as the access to nature. “Vegas has a big personality, but it’s a very small city, so you can be out of the city very quickly,” she says. “All of a sudden you’re in the desert, and you’re hiking in the canyons. So I can spend my time there outside of the Strip, as if all of the party doesn’t even exist, and I really love that.”

I was like, ‘Would somebody just push me over the edge?’ But only I could jump off it.

Twain tells me she’s still in contact with Lange: “We raise our son together,” she says, though that’s less of a full-time job since 21-year-old Eja moved to Los Angeles. Again, she seems to choose her words carefully. “We don’t work together anymore,” she says of her ex-husband. “But we’re very
 in proximity.”

Now was the first album she made without Lange since her debut, and though she felt “intact creatively,” she was haunted by old, sexist rumors that Lange had written all the songs himself. Making her forthcoming album, her second without Lange, was a more carefree experience. “I wanted there to be joy in it, I wanted it to be very uplifting sonically,” she says. “There’s a lot of cheekiness, a lot of bold, tongue-in-cheek humor, which I’m never afraid of anyway.”

Twain exercises that signature prerogative to have a little fun on her new single, the upbeat pop tune “Waking Up Dreaming.” The music video answers the song’s call to “dress up crazy like superstars,” as Twain embodies a glam-rock goddess, a hair metal star, and a diva in the style of Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. She promises that a new album and tour are soon to follow.

Twain also just made a guest appearance on Fox’s new country music drama series Monarch , which stars Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins. As she did (hilariously) on a 2017 episode of Broad City , Twain played a cartoonish version of herself. Both roles have made her “realize it’s fun to laugh at myself and not take Shania so seriously,” she says. Of her delightfully catty turn as Sarandon’s character’s longtime rival, Twain adds, “Take the persona out of context, if you will — I would never act like that for real! But that’s what makes it fun.”

A sense of possibility is once again opening up for Twain. “I’m having more fun with fashion than I did when I was younger,” she says. “Maybe with age I’m just less apologetic for how I look and I let fashion do its job.” She hints that there might someday be a sequel to that Coachella performance. She says of Styles, “He wanted to do a couple of my songs, and that was good and fun. But I just love his music too, so maybe I’ll do the reverse and get him up on my stage to do his songs.”

As ever, Twain is looking ahead. “From a very young age, I had to let a lot roll off my back,” she says, once again stretching her legs to get the blood flowing. “Fear, my insecurities. These are things that are not allowed to get in the way of my dreams and my forward motion.”

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

After many tour stops in both North America and Europe, Shania’s latest concert tour concluded at Rogers Arena last week.

From “That Don’t Impress Me Much” to “Any Man of Mine” and “Man, I Feel Like a Woman,” country music fan or not, it’s nearly impossible to not know at least one song in Shania Twain ’s discography. Ever since her debut studio album released in 1993 entitled, “ Shania Twain ,” she has dominated the country music scene hit after hit. Eventually releasing 6 successful studio albums to date with over 100 million records sold worldwide and 5 Grammy Awards under her belt, Shania has had an incredible career so far. As a Canadian cultural icon with immense music chart-topping success, Shania continues to attract audiences wherever she goes with both her greatest hits and new music.

Beginning in April of this year, Shania Twain began her 5th headlining concert tour. Named the “Queen of Me” tour after her most recent 6th studio album of the same name, this was Shania’s return to the stage after nearly five years. The tour began in Spokane on April 28th with shows in both North America and Europe including 2 stops in Vancouver back in May. After adding more dates due to high demand, Shania ultimately decided to add a 2nd leg to the tour which started in October and ended last week at Rogers Arena.

Canadian country music singer Tenille Townes opened for Shania during this leg of the tour. Hailing from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Townes attended Shania’s Up! Tour when she was 9 years old and was given an opportunity to sing with her on stage. Several years later, now as a rising country music star, Townes and Twain united again, proving that dreams really do come true. To open the show, Townes performed several of her hit songs such as “Somebody’s Daughter” and included a cover of “Come Together” by The Beatles. Later on, after Shania hit the stage, Townes returned to sing the hit duet, “Party For Two” with her.

While the tour was intended to support her latest “Queen of Me” studio album, the concerts were also an overall celebration of the music, artistry, stories, and talent of Shania’s entire career. Playing only 3 songs from her new album including, “Waking Up Dreaming,” “Giddy Up!” and “Pretty Liar,” the show had a heavy emphasis on her greatest hits. With songs such as “Up!” “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You),” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and “Honey, I’m Home,” pumping up the crowd, no one seemed too disappointed that a verse from the song behind the tour name, “Queen of Me,” was only sung briefly (and acoustically) by Shania for a short moment.

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

The show began with a performance of, “Waking Up Dreaming,” from her newest album. Despite starting the show a little later than usual, the excitement level was still high amongst the audience and escalated even more when Shania appeared within the audience on the floor level to start the show. Giving attendees an up close and personal performance was an experience of a lifetime for fans that were lucky enough to be within a few feet of her.

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

The staging of the show was simple. There were no pull out walkways or secondary stages, just one stage with two levels accompanied by large screens for added projection and effects. This was definitely simpler than previous tours; however, it emphasized Shania’s ability to put on a good show without all the flashy gimmicks and excessive special effects. Her live band and two male back-up dancers were the perfect touch, giving her the right amount of support to let her shine. Although Shania did not change outfits during the show, fans didn’t seem to mind. She spent most of her time focusing on the music and fan experience.

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

For her last show, Shania gave an overall solid vocal performance. Having been through a lot with her voice in the past, it was understandable that it has changed over the years. Some songs such as “Any Man of Mine” were taken down an octave to allow Shania to comfortably hit the required notes, which was fine and still got the crowd singing and dancing along. Perhaps one of my favorite moments of the show was when she sang, “Still The One.” Both acoustically and with musical accompaniment, Shania proved that she still had that spark and distinctive voice that people fell in love with many years ago when she sang this song for the first time.

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

Throughout the show, Shania brought a few lucky fans onto the stage for a few surprises. The first being a mother and daughter hailing from White Rock, BC. Shania brought out the original iconic leopard outfit from her “That Don’t Impress Me Much” music video and let both of them try it on. Later in the show, a fan that had seen Shania 13 times (and counting) was given the opportunity to sing with her on stage. No matter what, it was evident that Shania genuinely cared about her fans and wanted to give back to them for supporting her and her career after all the years of being in the spotlight.

Review: Shania Twain Ends QUEEN OF ME Tour in Vancouver!

Shania Twain ’s Queen of Me tour was an unforgettable experience. Her infectious energy, electrifying stage presence, and love for her fans has not faded, but grown with time. Traveling through the journey of her career, hit after hit, was a musical celebration that hit home for both longtime and newcomer fans. Canada will always love Shania Twain
 forever and for always.

Shania Twain concluded her Queen of Me Tour in Vancouver, BC on November 14th, 2023 at Rogers Arena. Her Las Vegas Residency at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood entitled “Come on Over: The Las Vegas Residency - All The Hits!” will commence in May of 2024. Canadian country-pop star Shania Twain has added a third show in St. John's at the Churchill Park Music Festival, according to her social media pages.

Twain is the headliner of this year's edition of the festival, and now has shows scheduled from Aug.16-18.

Tickets for the third show will go on sale at noon NT on Saturday, according to Twain's social media.

General admission tickets for her first two shows went on sale at noon NT on Thursday. The festival posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that tickets were sold out two hours later.

Festival organizer Pete Quinton told CBC News in March that Twain will come to St. John's in between two legs of a Las Vegas residency, meaning the festival will likely be her only shows in Canada this summer — and possibly this year.

Shania Twain

Singer-songwriter Shania Twain found success by combining country and pop music. She became an international star following the release of her 1997 album ‘Come On Over.’

shania twain 600x600

Who Is Shania Twain?

A music lover early on, Shania Twain started writing songs at age 10. Twain enjoyed success with her second album, The Woman in Me (1995), before delivering the best-selling country album in history with Come on Over (1997). Following a lengthy hiatus due to personal and health problems, Twain returned to the spotlight with a memoir in 2011 and embarked on a Las Vegas residency in 2012. She released her first album of original material in 15 years with 2017's Now , and made her feature film debut in 2019 with Trading Paint .

On August 28, 1965, Eilleen Regina Edwards — who would later change her name to Shania Twain — was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Her parents divorced when she was young, but her mother, Sharon, soon remarried, to a man named Jerry Twain, a member of the Ojibwa tribe. Jerry adopted Sharon’s three daughters, and the 4-year-old Eilleen became Eilleen Twain.

Twain grew up in the small town of Timmins, located in Ontario. There, her family often struggled to make ends meet, and Twain sometimes had nothing more than a “poor man’s sandwich” (bread spread with mayonnaise or mustard) for lunch at school. Jerry also had a violent streak, and Twain and her siblings witnessed him attack Sharon on more than one occasion.

But music was a bright spot in Twain’s childhood. She was singing by the age of 3, playing the guitar at 8 and penning her own songs at 10. Sharon embraced her daughter’s talent, making sacrifices the family could ill afford in order to get Twain to lessons and gigs. With her mother’s encouragement, Twain grew up singing in clubs and at community events, with occasional forays into television and radio.

Overcoming a Family Tragedy

At 18, Twain decided to try and make a go of her singing career in Toronto. She found work, but didn’t make enough to support herself without taking odd jobs, which included a stint at McDonald’s.

In 1987, however, Twain’s life was upended when her parents died in a car crash. In order to support her three younger siblings (in addition to Twain’s younger sister, Sharon and Jerry had had a son together and had also adopted Jerry’s nephew), Twain returned to Timmins and took a job singing as part of a Las Vegas–style show at the nearby Deerhurst resort in Huntsville, Ontario.

However, Twain hadn’t given up on making her own music, and she continued to write songs in her free time. Her demo made it to Nashville, and she was subsequently signed to Polygram Records (which became Mercury Nashville).

Early Career in Nashville

Her new label may have liked Twain’s music, but they didn’t care for the name Eilleen Twain. As Twain wanted to keep her last name to honor her adoptive father, she opted to change her first name instead, to Shania, an Ojibwe word that means “I’m on my way.”

Debut Album: 'Shania Twain'

Encouraged to use songs written by others, Twain lamented her lack of artistic control in Nashville. Still, her first album, titled Shania Twain , was released in 1993. The album was not a big success (though Twain's video for “What Made You Say That,” which featured her wearing a crop top, got plenty of attention), but it did reach one important fan: Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who’d produced albums for groups such as AC/DC, the Cars and Def Leppard. After getting in touch with Twain, Lange set to work with her on her next album.

Albums and Songs

'the woman in me'.

Twain and Lange co-wrote 10 of the 12 tracks for Twain’s next album, The Woman in Me (1995). Twain loved the album, but given Lange’s rock background and the record’s forays into pop as well as country music, she worried about how people would react.

She needn’t have been concerned. The first single, “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” reached No. 11 on the country charts. The follow-up single, the rock-infused “Any Man of Mine,” soared to No. 1 on the country charts and was also a Top 40 pop hit. Twain received four Grammy nominations the following year, and won Best Country Album. A critical and commercial success, The Woman in Me would reach eventually reach more than 12 million in U.S. sales.

'Come On Over'

Twain’s subsequent album, Come On Over (1997), another co-production with Lange, further fused country and pop. It also had more chart-topping songs, including pumped-up anthems such as “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much," as well as romantic ballads such as “You're Still the One” and “From This Moment On.”

In 1999, “You’re Still The One” earned Twain two Grammys, one for Best Country Song and another for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The song also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country charts. The next year, Twain took home another two Grammys when “Come On Over” was named Best Country Song and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” won for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Come On Over reigned at No. 1 on the country charts for a combined 50 weeks. It became the best-selling country album of all time—reaching 40 million in worldwide sales—as well as the top-selling album by a solo female artist. With the success of Come On Over , followed by a popular tour, Twain became an international star.

'Up!' and 'Greatest Hits'

In 2002, Twain's Up! was released. There were three versions of the album: a pop red version, a country green disc and a blue version that had an international, Bollywood-influenced flavor. The red and green combination reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country and Top 200 charts (the rest of the world got the red-blue pairing, which was also a success). However, sales dipped compared to Twain’s previous monster hits, with 5.5 million copies sold in the United States.

By 2004, Shania Twain had recorded enough material for her first compilation of greatest hits. It was released in the fall of that year, the album would top and the charts and eventually go quadruple platinum.

Marriages and Personal Life

Twain’s personal life seemed to take off alongside her career. After working with Lange over the phone for months, the pair finally met in person in June 1993. Six months later, they were married.

Hoping to find themselves greater privacy, Twain and Lange relocated to a luxurious Swiss estate. While living in Switzerland, in 2001 Twain gave birth to a son, Eja D'Angelo Lange. Twain also struck up a friendship with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, who worked as an assistant for the couple.

In 2008, Twain and Lange separated, with Twain devastated to have discovered that her husband was having an affair with ThiĂ©baud. Twain and Lange’s divorce was finalized two years later.

The separation and divorce were extremely difficult for Twain. Not only had her marriage ended, but she’d lost someone who had helped guide her career. Around this time, Twain began experiencing dysphonia, a tightening of the vocal muscles that made it difficult for her to sing.

However, there was one person who could understand what Twain was experiencing—FrĂ©dĂ©ric ThiĂ©baud, Marie-Anne’s ex-husband. Twain and Frederic grew closer, and the two wed on New Year’s Day in 2011.

Return to the Spotlight

'why not' and memoir, las vegas residencies.

In 2012, Twain stepped fully back into the public eye when she began a series of elaborate shows at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. The production was titled Shania: Still the One and was a highly successful attraction during its two-year run. A live album of the show was released in March 2015.

The performer later returned to Vegas in December 2019 for a residency at Planet Hollywood's Zappos Theater, this one titled Let's Go!

In March 2015, Twain announced plans for a summer tour to take her through 48 cities. Meanwhile, she worked on new music, with the release of the singles "Life's About to Get Good" and "Swingin' with My Eyes Closed" in mid-2017 heralding the arrival of her long-awaited comeback album.

Twain unveiled Now , her first studio album of original songs since 2002's Up! , in late September 2017. Although the material drew mixed reviews, Now topped the Billboard country charts and Hot 200 in the U.S., and reached No. 1 in several other countries as well.

After years of occasional appearances on TV shows like American Idol and Broad City , Twain made her feature film debut alongside John Travolta in the 2019 racing film Trading Paint . The following year, she played the mother of Christian singer and songwriter Jeremy Camp (portrayed by KJ Apa ) in I Still Believe .

Shania Twain Remembers Polarizing ‘Unexpected’ Wardrobe in ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’ Music Video

It's been 25 years since Twain released the music video for the hit song that challenged country music and gender norms

Shania Twain/ Youtube

Shania Twain is reflecting on her iconic wardrobe in the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" music video 25 years after its release.

In a VevoFootnotes video, the country music star, 58, explained how designer Marc Bouwer made sure Twain's wardrobe in the video — which was inspired by Robert Palmer's video for "Addicted to Love" — matched the spirit of the song, which was about "liberation" and "independence."

"We wanted to make something unexpected and the role reversal was the vision," Twain wrote in her footnote.

The "You're Still the One" singer wore a white button-down shirt and tie under a black trenchcoat in the video until she slowly undressed to reveal a black corset and skirt with fishnets and a choker. For part of the video, she also wore a black top hat with a veil attached to it.

Twain said her stylist for the video "dressed me in that amazing high women's coat, the top hat, with the veil added for a touch of femininity in what was a 'typically' masculine outfit."

"I wanted it to evolve with the peeling away layers of clothes, like layers of this person coming off and revealing a different side of my inner self," she continued. "I wanted [the outfit] to show and say so much more than just man and woman — there's a whole area in between."

The "That Don't Impress Me Much" singer said that the country music industry gave her "flack" for the 1999 video.

"We were taking country music to a place it hadn't been before and some people didn't like that," she said, adding that she and the team involved in the project were deliberate about every risk they were taking.

"I remember the art department saying 'This is way too sexy! The women listeners are not going to like this! They're going to feel threatened." But Twain knew that her instincts were right and "women would totally get it."

The criticism of the wardrobe for the video reinforced the message behind "Man! I Feel Like a Woman."

"I was standing up for myself through the song. I wasn't being apologetic for all of the things I had been criticized for in my life," Twain said, adding that she was often told things like "....you can't wear that, that's too tight, that's too short."

Ironically, Twain could fit in the video's famous corset decades after its release. She wore it during a performance of her Let's Go!  residency in Las Vegas in 2021.

"I don't do it as easily as I did before, but it feels awesome," Twain said of wearing the outfit on   People (the Show!) .

When she wore the iconic outfit during a 2023 concert in New York City, Twain revealed that before she pulled it out of retirement, the outfit had been in a "museum, collecting dust."

Shania Twain On Finding New Meaning In 'You're Still The One' After Her Divorce: 'It Wasn't About Me'

The canadian superstar unpacks the process of writing and recording her 1997 hit on a new episode of song exploder, realizing the song has taken on a life of its own..

Shania Twain

In a new episode of the podcast Song Exploder , country superstar Shania Twain breaks down how she made her 1997 hit, "You're Still the One," and how its meaning has changed since then.

"Still the One" comes from Twain's 1997 record Come on Over , the all-time best-selling album by a solo female artist. The uplifting ballad is one of the record's biggest hits, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — Twain's highest ever placement on that chart. It topped the Country Songs chart and has become a popular anthem for weddings, anniversaries and impassioned karaoke performances. (Twain also recently revisited the music video for another of Come on Over 's major singles, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman.")

The song was first inspired by public skepticism of Twain's marriage to producer Mutt Lange. Twain explains on Song Exploder that she had grown up with Lange's music as a rock fan in Timmins, Ontario — Lange produced hugely popular records like AC/DC's Back in Black and Def Leppard's Paranoia. To Twain, though Lange was nearly 20 years her senior, she felt like their marriage was a given. "It was just so obvious we needed to be together," Twain explains.

Others didn't feel the same, though. When Lange produced Twain's massively successful 1995 album The Woman in Me , Twain faced suggestions that she wasn't an authentic artist or that she didn't have creative control in the relationships. "[Critics] insinuated that I was a product being shaped and formed," Twain says. "You're Still the One" was Twain's response, an assertion to Lange, herself, and the world, that they were going to make it.

Twain says she remembers the day she wrote it clearly. The melody came to her as she was humming in the kitchen, followed by the classic line: "looks like we made it." She picked up her guitar and wrote the chorus quickly. Lange joined and asked her to loop her chorus vocals, inspiring him to come up with his catchy chorus counter-melody.

The duo recorded the song in Nashville, wanting it to have a country feel. Twain discusses the pushback to The Woman in Me 's success, when some in the country music industry suggested she wasn't a real country artist because she wasn't American or Southern. "I knew I belonged there because those were my roots," Twain says.

She had been singing in bars since she was eight, performing Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. As an adult artist, though, Twain wanted to expand country's possibilities, blending it with rock and R&B. "The music was gonna be a hybrid of all of my various influences stylistically," she says.

(Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter , which takes its own innovative approach to country as a genre, serves as a reminder that gatekeeping in country music is still very much alive and well, especially for Black artists).

For "You're Still the One," Twain and Lange got that country style through gentle brushwork on the drums and the romantic steel guitar. The steel guitar in particular was a "wow" moment in the studio, Twain says, and she points out Lange's production choice of highlighting the guitar's swells in the mix. She also admits that she always found the song's spoken word intro corny — "when I first saw you, I saw love" — but that Lange encouraged it to amp up its sensuality.

Once the song was released, Twain explains, it took on a life of its own — and changed its meaning for her in the process.

Twain and Lange separated in 2008, and she remembers that it was initially hard to perform the song after the divorce. "I was choking down the tears," Twain says. Twain worried that her fans would be sad for her as she sang the song. But as she continued to perform it, she discovered the song was no longer just hers. "I soon realized that it wasn’t about me. People had adopted the song as their song," Twain says, explaining that fans were thinking about their own relationships and lives in relation to the song.

“This song has way surpassed why I wrote it. It’s so much more than that," Twain concludes. Ultimately, "You're Still the One" transcended its own inspiration to stand the test of time — and look how far its come.

AP Dhillon and Stormzy

The Punjabi-Canadian artist has released a confident new track with U.K. grime star Stormzy.

Punjabi-Canadian star AP Dhillon has dropped a new collaboration with UK grime star Stormzy. The suave single arrives ahead of Dhillon's debut Coachella performance on Sunday, April 14.

"This what happens when you mix Punjab Royalty with South London's finest," Stormzy announces in the intro to "Problems Over Peace." Dhillon enters with a cool vocal: "We live by our instincts and not by the book," Dhillon sings in Punjabi.

Accompanied by sleek guitar riffs and soft high hats, the two artists assert their power as two leading artists in global hip-hop scenes with major momentum.

Dhillon will play both weekends at Coachella this month, and is joined on the lineup by fellow Punjabi-Canadian artist NAV. Their performances follow last year's historic set by Diljit Dosanjh, the first all-Punjabi performance at the major festival.

Dhillon is already a star in his own right — his songs often perform amongst Spotify's top tracks in India, and he performed his first Canadian shows at arenas. The Stormzy collab and Coachella performances will only increase the artist's growing profile, and contribute to Punjabi music's growing popularity in North American and U.K. markets.

Artists like Dhillon and recent Juno-winner Karan Aujla are landing placements on all-genre charts and playing increasingly high-profile events, as the Punjabi Wave continues to swell.

Check out the full Coachella lineup here and here are the details on how to tune into the livestream .

“It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” Lyrics

Oh, no-no-no Hope life’s been good to you since you’ve been gone? I’m doin’ fine now, I’ve finally moved on It’s not so bad, I’m not that sad I’m not surprised just how well I survived I’m over the worst, and I feel so alive I can’t complain, I’m free again And it only hurts when I’m breathing My heart only breaks when it’s beating My dreams only die when I’m dreaming So, I hold my breath to forget Don’t think I’m lyin’ ’round, cryin’ at night There’s no need to worry, I’m really alright I’ve never looked back as a matter of fact And it only hurts when I’m breathing My heart only breaks when it’s beating My dreams only die when I’m dreaming So, I hold my breath to forget It only hurts when I breathe Mmm, no, I’ve never looked back as a matter of fact And it only hurts when I’m breathing My heart only breaks when it’s beating My dreams only die when I’m dreaming So, I hold my breath (hold my breath) To forget hurts, when I’m breathing (Heart only breaks) breaks, when it’s beating (Dreams only die) die, when I’m dreaming It only hurts when I breathe
