Tortuguero Costa Rica Beach Couple

Tortuguero Costa Rica is often called the Amazon of Central America. It is a protected and very important national park. This magical part of Costa Rica blew us away. It offers incredible nature and biodiversity, adventurous tours, and stunning beaches. To name only a few of the reasons why you can’t miss visiting Tortuguero when traveling in Costa Rica.

Best time to visit Tortuguero Costa Rica

Tortuguero National park is located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, which has a wetter climate than other parts of the country. Temperatures are high, and the climate is humid all year round. Also, the Caribbean coast has not the same dry season as the rest of Costa Rica; there can always be rain. The driest months seem to be September, October, and February. We visited in June and had a mix of rain and sun but overall great weather.

If you want to see the turtle’s nesting, you should plan your visit from July to October. We were a bit too early for that.

How to get there

Tortuguero Costa Rica can only be reached by boat. The shuttle boats leave pretty much every hour. Usually, when booking your accommodation, they will send you a boat schedule. Some hotels even offer their own transportation for guests.

The boats leave at La Pavona station. If you have a rental car, you can drive to La Pavona in your car and park it there during your trip. The parking costs approximately 10 USD per day and must be paid in cash. At the station, there is a restaurant and restrooms. If you don’t drive by yourself, buses are leaving from San Jose Terminal del Caribe. The ride takes about 2 hours and costs 3 USD. Besides, there is the option of a private shuttle which is the more expensive option.

The boat ride to your accommodation takes about 1 hour, and it’s very scenic. You get the first glimpse of how beautiful Tortuguero Costa Rica is. The boat ride costs 4000 colones per person, which is about 6 USD.

Biodiversity of Nature and Wildlife

Tortuguero was widely destroyed by logging until Costa Rica first declared the area a national park in 1970. Since then rainforest has recovered from the destruction. Today Tortuguero Costa Rica is home to an incredible biodiversity of plants and animals. For more than 60 species of mammals, including the Jaguar, Sloths, Howler, and Spider Monkeys, 111 species of reptiles, including crocodiles, Caimans, and Iguanas, and more than 300 species of birds, Tortuguero is their home. Besides, the beaches of Tortuguero are a key nesting site for four different species of turtles. When you book a tour to the national park, the entrance fee is 15 USD per person, and you have to purchase the ticket the day before.

Jungle Night Walk – an unforgettable experience

One of the most incredible experiences we had was our jungle night walk. It was magical to be in the jungle in the dark and to listen to all the sounds of nature. Our guide showed us a beautiful boa, many frogs, insects, especially incredible spiders. We got to see the Brazilian wander spider, which is the most poisonous spider on the planet. Don’t worry, you will stay on the walking path, and the walk is not dangerous but highly interesting and exciting.

Stunning and wild Beaches

The beaches of Tortuguero Costa Rica have everything we love about the beaches in this country. Lots of palm trees along the coast, and they are wild and from natural beauty. The long beach is perfect for a beautiful sunset or sunrise beach walk.

Relaxing Kanu tour through the canals

The second tour we did was an early morning Kanu tour in the canals. We chose a Kanu over a motorized boat because first of all, it’s much quieter, which is great to watch wildlife without disturbing it, second, it’s a lot smaller allowing us to explore all the smaller canals in the jungle, getting closer to wildlife and it’s a lot more private as well. Our guide was amazing and showed us lots of wildlife. We saw many very unique birds, we have never heard of before, some Caimans, Iguanas, and Monkeys.

Another option would be to do a Kanu tour, which must be a lot of fun too. We decided on the Kanu because it allowed us to relax and enjoy our surroundings fully.

Watch the Turles nesting.

If you visit Tortuguero Costa between July and October, you will get the chance to see the Turtles nesting at the beach. We were a bit too early for this experience but got lucky in another part of Costa Rica. There are several different species of Turles nesting here which is super exciting. The most popular ones are the impressive Leatherback Turtles, which get up to 2 meters long and 900 kilograms. Those massive Turtles are, unfortunately, highly endangered. That’s why protected areas for them to nest like Tortuguero are so essential for their survival. We hope we will get to see those beautiful animals next time.

Reconnecting to nature and feeling energized

It’s not a secret that time spent in nature is good for our health and well-being. After these days we spent at Tortuguero, Costa Rica, we felt very recovered and energized by nature. Sometimes we have to be somewhere very remote to realize that and to notice from how many noises and negative energy we are surrounded by when we live in a city for example.

A river in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, embraced by lush green trees.

Where to stay in Tortuguero Costa Rica

During our visit to Tortuguero Costa Rica, we stayed at the Mawamba Lodge and we had a great time there. They are located in between the Rivers of Tortuguero and the beach. We had a beautiful bungalow and we could walk to the beach and to Tortuguero town from here.

We booked all our excursions with Mawamba Lodge and they have amazing and very experienced guides. They made our experiences even better.

To be honest, Tortuguero Costa Rica wasn’t on our radar when we first planned our trip to Costa Rica. But we are very grateful that we finally made it there anyway. It got one of our favorite experiences. We must say nature there blew us away. It really feels like a trip in the Amazon (even though we haven’t been yet but hopefully soon). We highly recommend visiting this part of Costa Rica. This area is famous for eco-tourism, what we love and is in our opinion the future of travel.

Tortuguero Canals by Boat

  • Jenn and Matt
  • Activities , National Parks & Reserves

Many years ago, we paddled through Tortuguero National Park’s waterway canals in a tipsy canoe. Gliding through the wetlands, we snuck up on birds, river turtles, and caimans. On our most recent visit to Tortuguero, our situation had changed. This time, with two little boys in tow, we opted for a more stable boat tour. We thought we wouldn’t see as much wildlife but were pleasantly surprised. In this post, we’ll share our experience exploring the Tortuguero canals by boat.

Canal Tour Tortuguero National Park

Background & Location

Tortuguero is a small town on Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast. Surrounded by vast wetlands and a long stretch of beach, it is a difficult-to-access wildlife haven.

When in Tortuguero, one of the most popular activities to do is visit Tortuguero National Park . While the park does have some land trails and turtle-nesting beaches , a highlight for nearly everyone is a tour of the park’s waterway canals.

A local guide association in Tortuguero village offers canoe and kayak tours, but like we mentioned, these weren’t right for our family.

Tortuguero Canals Boat Tour

Our boat tour started at Tortuga Lodge where we were staying. The hotel had arranged it for us in advance, and our guide, Fabian, was waiting for us at the reception. Many other lodges have their own boats and offer these tours as well.

Donning life jackets, our family stepped into the waiting boat. Our captain, Johan, slowly motored away from the dock.

First Stop – Tortuguero National Park

Just 10 minutes down the wide canal, we pulled up to the dock at Tortuguero National Park. This is the first stop for everyone visiting the park’s waterways. Since the canals are part of the national park, you have to stop here to purchase park tickets.

While our guide hopped out and bought our tickets from the ranger, we walked up a spiral stairway to a viewing tower.

Tower Tortuguero National Park

Perched from high above we could see how vast the wetlands were. They stretched as far as the eye could see.

Tortuguero National Park is massive, protecting over 190,000 acres (76,937 hectares). Amazingly only one percent is used for tourism and the rest is kept completely wild.

The Main Canals

After loading back into the small motorboat, our guide, Fabian, began to explain more about the park.

He told us how it is a very important ecosystem for migratory birds. These birds either spend their winters in Costa Rica or stop to rest and eat on their way to other countries.

As we motored swiftly down the wide canal, Fabian told us that the tall trees around us were great for spotting predatory birds. There was even a recent sighting, he said, of a Crested Eagle. This bird is one of the largest eagles and very rare. It can have a wingspan of more than five feet (1.5 meters).

As we rode, we noticed that the canals around Tortuguero are sort of like roads. Since the town has no paved roads, boats travel up and down these waterways to get to the mainland and other villages. There are even signs at intersections, pointing the way.

Large canal Tortuguero

We didn’t see a whole lot of wildlife along this part of the canal, aside from several heron species, vultures, and some iguanas. It was quite beautiful, however, with all the tall trees and green vegetation along the banks.

Narrow Canals and Inlets

The next portion of our tour navigated through some narrower passageways. We immediately began to see more along the banks.

Right in front of the boat was a family of howler monkeys, eating fruits and leaves from a tree. Johan stopped the boat near them so that we could take pictures and get a closer look through binoculars.

Howler Monkey Canals Tortuguero

After a few minutes we continued, passing some interesting trees. One had a large brown fruit or seed pod. Our guide explained that it was called a provision tree because the leaves and flowers could be eaten. We also learned later that it is also called a money tree, the same type that is kept as a common houseplant.

We continued slowly, the banks of the canal getting closer and closer to the boat. We really felt like we were in the jungle now.

Narrow canal Tortuguero

This part of the tour was the best for wildlife viewing. We had thought that only kayaks and canoes could go so deep into the mangroves, but Johan navigated the boat carefully and quietly.

Wildlife Highlights

Some of the wildlife we came across included an emerald basilisk lizard, known for its ability to run across the surface of the water. There was also a shy river turtle that slipped off a log under the water.

Another reptile we spotted was a caiman, a smaller species of crocodile that is the most common type in the Tortuguero canals. This one was only about three feet (one meter) long, but they can get much bigger. As we approached, it watched us carefully with its bright orange eyes.

Caiman in Tortuguero canal

For birds, we were lucky to spot a male and female Great Curassow. They were hiding in the thick tree roots. Fabian told us that these turkey-sized birds indicate a healthy ecosystem since they prefer undisturbed environments.

We also sat and watched a Crowned Woodnymph hummingbird dart between flowers on the bank. This hummingbird had brilliant green, blue, and purple feathers that are almost iridescent. Unfortunately, it was too quick for our camera.

Later, we did get some nicer camera shots of a Northern Jacana and Green Heron.

Northern Jacana Tortuguero

Spider Monkeys

Probably the most memorable wildlife encounter on this tour were the spider monkeys. These are not that common to see in Costa Rica. They are hard to spot because they move quickly through the tall trees. There are also fewer of them.

Fortunately for us, we came across an entire family. And three of them were a bit curious and came down to look at us, letting us get a closer glimpse of them in the process.

Spider Monkey Tortuguero Canals

While we watched them effortlessly swing around the branches, Fabian told us a little more about them.

One cool fact was that they have the strongest prehensile tail of all mammals. We could actually see them using their tails a lot as they moved. He also said that they have evolved to have no thumb on their hand. This was so that they can swing better on the branches.

Booking a Tortuguero Canal Boat Tour

Most eco-lodges in Tortuguero offer canal boat tours with their packages. We stayed at the Tortuga Lodge , which not only had a great location and excellent food, but also very knowledgeable guides. If you are staying at a different lodge, they will likely offer a similar experience.

Family friendly Tortuguero National Park

For those staying in Tortuguero village, there are a few smaller tour operators who offer boat tours. Kayak and canoe tours are also very popular through the guide association. It is located near the Almond Tree Dock, the main dock in town.

We were pleasantly surprised with the amazing wildlife we saw on the Tortuguero canal boat tour. Our guide was really knowledgeable and passionate to share everything that we saw. This helped keep both the kids and parents engaged and excited. If you are in Tortuguero, we’d highly recommend it.

14 EPIC Things to do in Tortuguero, Costa Rica & Guide to Visiting

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

The tiny town of Tortuguero lies on the northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Both the town and Tortuguero National Park are named after marine turtles (Tortuguero means turtle.) This area of the country is one of the most important nesting sites in the Caribbean for various species of sea turtles.

What’s unique about Tortuguero is that it’s a collection of canals and rivers interspersed with dense jungle and beaches. There’s no road here! So you’ll either be getting to Tortuguero by flying in a small aircraft from San Jose or by boat from nearby cities such as Puerto Limon .

The main draw to Tortuguero is the turtle nesting season – this is one of the best places to see turtles in all of Costa Rica ! However, even outside the season, you should also explore the amazing Tortuguero National Park. Because of the remote location, this is one of the wildest national parks in the country. Some call it the “Amazon” of Costa Rica because you will feel transported to the rainforest!

Exploring the park is certainly one of the most popular things to do in Tortuguero, however, there are other activities to enjoy.

To help inspire and plan your upcoming visit, here are the 14 best things to do in Tortuguero. I’ve also included other essential tips for visiting in this complete guide to Tortuguero National Park.

Don’t have time to read the full article?  Check out our list of our absolute favorite things to do in Tortuguero:

  • Explore Tortuguero National Park by water on this kayaking tour .
  • Take this guided day hike through Tortuguero National Park to learn about the park’s flora and fauna.
  • Visit the Turtle Museum (Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor Center).
  • Stroll along the shore at Tortuguero Beach.
  • Hike Cerro Tortuguero (Turtle Hill)–it’s the highest peak on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica!

About Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Tortuguero Beach at sunrise in Tortuguero, Costa Rica

As I mentioned above, Tortuguero is one of the most important turtle nesting sites in the world. Every year from July until the end of October, thousands of sea turtles come to the beach here to lay eggs. The national park was established in 1975 after a sea turtle researcher alerted the Costa Rican government about how important this area was.

Now, 35 kilometers (22 miles) of the beach is set aside as part of the national park. While sea turtle populations have decreased around the world, nesting here has actually gone up 500% since the park was created! Now, 20,000 green sea turtles nest here each year – the largest remaining colony in the world .

Besides the incredible turtles, other wildlife in Tortuguero is abundant with everything from howler monkeys to jaguars to sloths. You might also spot some of the 300 species of birds or 111 species of reptiles. This protected area is home to so many amazing critters!

You can explore the park on your own without a tour, but there are some once-in-a-lifetime tours offered here – including seeing the sea turtles that make this area famous. The park is open every day from 6 am to 4 pm – but the entrance closes at 12 pm for an hour for lunch.

Admission to Tortuguero National Park is $15 USD for adults and $5 USD for kids under 12. Just note that if you bring cash, bills over $50 USD are not accepted, so have smaller bills or a credit card on hand.

This area also has unique and fun activities around Tortuguero Village like a floating restaurant, a cocoa tour, and hiking up an inactive volcano if you want to base yourself here for a few days.

If you don’t plan to stay in the Tortuguero area , I also have information below on day trips to Tortuguero National Park from either San Jose or Puerto Limon. That way, you can still see this amazing area but return to a home base elsewhere.

Tortuguero, Costa Rica FAQs

A crocodile in Tortuguero National Park

Yes, Tortuguero is certainly worth visiting, especially during turtle season from July to October. Outside of that time, you can still see turtles but you will need to be prepared not to and do other activities. Those short on time can always do a day trip from San Jose .

Tortuguero is known as the best place in Costa Rica to see thousands of Green Sea and Hawksbill turtles nesting (July to October) The nearby mangroves and rainforests are also a highlight.

Tortuguero is a very safe town. With that said, normal caution should be taken and you should avoid wandering the forest on your own due to wildlife.

Plan to spend 2 to 3 nights in Tortuguero to see the area. Any more time, and you may get bored.

Yes, there is finally one ATM in Tortuguero, however, it can run out of money and be unreliable. So, bring enough cash for your trip in either USD or Colones. Places also rarely accept credit cards but the national park does.

Turtle Nesting season in Tortuguero runs from July to October with the best time being August.

Things to do in Tortuguero, Costa Rica

1. kayaking tour in tortuguero national park  .

A group of people Kayaking in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

The most ideal way to explore Tortuguero National Park is from the water! I recommend booking a  kayaking tour like this one  to explore the meandering, narrow canals that wind throughout the park.

This tour sets off first thing in the morning (6 am), right when the park opens. This is one of the best times to spot wildlife as lots of animals are active in those early morning hours. You might be lucky enough to spot a manatee, several different types of monkeys, or a crocodile (don’t fall in!)

Accompanied by an experienced guide, this three-hour adventure is a great way to experience the stunning beauty of the park and get views that simply aren’t possible if you’re hiking. The tour price of $45 USD includes the kayak, paddles, and life vest but doesn’t include the park entrance fee of $15 USD.

Without a doubt, a kayak was my favorite way to explore Tortuguero National Park. You get so close to the action and get some exercise at the same time! Be sure to book your kayaking tour in advance to ensure you don’t miss out – this is easily one of the most popular things to do in Tortuguero.

2. Go on a hike through Tortuguero National Park

A baby howler monkey in Tortuguero National Park

While much of Tortuguero National Park is only accessible by water, there is the main trail that leads through a section of the park that you can hike along.

You can pay the park entrance fee and explore the short trail on your own or hire a guide to take you on a hiking tour. This tour for a day hike  is really helpful for spotting wildlife as the experienced guides know what to look for and can often spot animals you would have missed. The guide is also great at explaining all the flora and fauna around you and some of the history of the park.

Another advantage of this tour is that it includes binoculars, ponchos, and rubber boots. This trail is notoriously muddy, especially if it has been raining recently. If you don’t go on a tour, be sure to rent a pair of rubber boots from one of the vendors located outside of the park. Tip – bring tall socks to wear in your rubber boots – it will make them slightly more comfortable for a longer hike.

The hiking tour with a guide should last about two hours and costs around $30 USD, and doesn’t include the $15 USD park entrance fee.

3. Enjoy fine dining at Katonga floating restaurant

Katonga floating restaurant

This is a unique and memorable way to enjoy an excellent meal in Tortuguero. Climb aboard the  Katonga floating restaurant  for breakfast, lunch, or dinner as it takes you on a short tour of the Tortuguero canals.

Katonga is a restaurant that is part of the Mawamba Lodge , but you can eat here even if you aren’t staying at the lodge. Make sure you make reservations, though, as they are required for this experience.

Once you make reservations, you’ll be picked up by boat and taken to the floating restaurant. There’s a set menu to choose from, and the entire experience will take about two hours.

The tour takes you to the mouth of the river, where it meets up with the ocean. While dinner is a nice option, go for breakfast or lunch if you’re interested in the best views as it does get dark earlier in the evening. Although stargazing at night from the floating restaurant is fun too!

4. Turtle nesting tour

Baby turtles walk to the beach in Tortuguero, Costa Rica

Of all the things to do in Tortuguero National Park, this is a must-do if you’re here during turtle nesting season (July 1-October 31). Book a turtle nesting tour  in the park to get the chance to see the amazing turtles here lay their eggs.

This area is so important to sea turtles, and getting the chance to witness the turtles nesting on the beach is a truly special experience. A guide will give you some of the history of sea turtles and then help you find a turtle to observe. You’ll see a turtle lay her eggs, camouflage the nest, and then return to the sea.

The nesting season is from July 1 to October 31, so the tour can only be booked within those dates. Turtles will only lay their eggs at night, so this tour happens completely in the dark, with the experience starting at 8 pm.

Unfortunately during my visit, we missed the sea turtles laying eggs because we visited in December. However, we still got lucky and watched baby turtles walk to the ocean. Although not the highlight, it was still really special!

5. Visit the Turtle Museum (Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor Center)

A display at Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor's Center in Tortuguero

After (hopefully!) getting the chance to see turtles in the park, learn more about the species at the  small museum and conservation center  in Tortuguero. It has great information on the life, habitat, and history of sea turtles.

Take some time to watch a video about the history of turtles in Tortuguero in the small theater inside the museum. You can also learn about the research that started back in the 1950s and still carries on today, and find out how to get involved.

The museum and small souvenir shop are open daily from 10 am to 12 pm and then from 2 pm to 5 pm Admission to the museum is only $2.50 USD.

6. Have a coffee at Dorling Bakery

This little bakery and café opens really early (5 am!), so it’s a perfect spot to stop in for coffee before an early morning tour in the park.

Dorling Bakery is located right on the water, so it’s a beautiful place to leisurely enjoy coffee and breakfast or even a pizza for lunch.

They are famous for their baked goods, so grab some homemade banana bread, lemon and orange cake, or even chocolate cake if you can. Dorling Bakery is open every day from 5 am to 6 pm.

7. Canoe tour through Tortuguero National Park

canoe tour through Tortuguero National Park

Enjoy the quiet beauty of this area with a relaxing canoe tour through Tortuguero National Park.

There are two types of canoe tours you can do. Both are aboard large canoes that seat around 4 to 6 people and you can either choose the paddle or take a small electric motor. With the electric motor, you’ll certainly be able to enjoy the trip a lot more. Sit back and let your guide show you around while you take photos. This is what I did and I loved it!

If you choose to paddle, there is no loud motor to scare animals away, and it’s easier to weave through the tight canals to get to more remote areas. A professional guide will be on the lookout and can help point out animals along the way and you’ll have time to stop and get some pictures.

What’s great about these tours is you’re typically in a small group, so it’s easier to ask questions or just quietly take in the amazing scenery. This park is truly best viewed from the water!

This specific tour is on a motor canoe and the tour starts early at 6 am and lasts for three hours. It’s $32 USD, which doesn’t include the park entrance fee of $15 USD.

8. Night walk

Two red eyed tree frogs on a Tortuguero Night tour

Exploring Tortuguero National Park in the dark is one of the more popular Tortuguero tours. Taking a night walk tour through the park is the best way to spot all the critters that only come out in the dark.

You might spot bats, tarantulas, snakes, birds, lizards, lots of frogs, and maybe even a sloth sleeping! The park also comes alive with all the sounds of the animals who are awake in the dark.

The tour is led by a professional guide and includes a flashlight to help you spot wildlife. The guide will also keep you safe because poisonous snakes and frogs live in the national park. For $30 USD, the two-hour tour is great value, and night tours should not be done without a local guide.

9. Canopy Tour

Explore the treetops with a canopy tour that will have you soaring above the rainforest. I love ziplining in Costa Rica – it’s such a fun way to see the scenery, but also get an adrenaline rush!

The tour with Tortuguero Adventures includes 7 cables, 11 platforms, 4 hanging bridges, a rock-climbing wall, and a leap of faith. There’s also a short tour of the amphibian farm here that you can walk through before or after ziplining.

The tour is around $35 USD and includes transportation – just mention that you will need transportation to the facility. The adventure park is only about five minutes from Tortuguero Village.

Make sure to wear shoes like runners for this activity and bring water, insect repellent, and your camera!

Related Read: Ziplining is one of the best activities in Monteverde – where the country’s longest zipline is located!

10. Relax at Tortuguero Beach

Tortuguero Beach at sunset

This is a huge, wild beach connected to the national park. Tortuguero Beach is perfect for taking a walk along or watching sea turtles, but it isn’t for swimming. The water here has strong currents, and some sharks and crocodiles live in it.

The beauty of Tortuguero Beach is that it stretches along the Caribbean coast on a rainforest-covered sandbar. The long beach with soft sand makes for a nice stroll. Come here at sunset for a particularly nice view!

Tortuguero Beach is also where I saw the baby turtles hatching – so keep an eye out!

11. Casa Cecropia Cacao Tour

Casa Cecropia Cacao Tour

This is by far the sweetest experience in Tortuguero! Take a  cacao tour with Casa Cecropia  in Tortuguero Village and learn all about the traditional chocolate-making process.

The experience starts with a visit to the orchard to see the cocoa trees with their flowers and fruits. Then inside the Caribbean-style house, you’ll learn about the harvest, fermenting, and drying process for cocoa beans. You’ll hear about the importance of cocoa as a ceremonial drink for ancient cultures and even some Caribbean pirate stories!

The best part of the tour is how hands-on it is – everything from getting the chance to taste the cocoa fruit, roast the beans, crush the beans on the table stone, and then grind them into a paste to make your own chocolate. To me, this is one of the most unique things to do in Tortuguero for around $60 USD.

12. Enjoy an Italian meal on the water at Budda Café

Italian on the water at Budda Café

This small restaurant is the place to eat and enjoy the view! The Budda Café is located inside of the Budda Home Hotel and the hotel is right on the river with tables on a covered deck facing the canals of Tortuguero.

The food is European with some delicious pizza and pasta along with milkshakes (try the banana one!) and cocktails. If you’re gluten-free or vegan they have different versions available for you too.

The music and ambience make it a really nice place to enjoy the sunset.

Budda Café is located right in the center of Tortuguero Village in front of a souvenir store.

13. Cerro Tortuguero Hike

The view from Cerro Tortuguero

Cerro Tortuguero (Turtle Hill) is a small, inactive volcano that has a hiking trail with a spectacular view at the top! It’s the highest peak on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, and the views are worth the climb.

You can go on your own or  book a tour with Mawamba Lodge  to have transportation taken care of and an experienced guide to point out all the interesting plants and animals you’ll spot along the way.

Make sure to bring water and take breaks along the way as the climb up the flights of stairs can be challenging in the Costa Rican heat and humidity. Take advantage of the resting platforms along the staircase trail to catch your breath.

When you reach the top, the observation deck here is amazing! You’ll be able to see the Caribbean Sea, Tortuguero town, San Francisco town, and the forest canopy of Tortuguero National Park stretching across the horizon.

The tour is $40 USD per person – check-in for available times when you are there. If going on your own, you’ll have to pay about $2 USD for an entrance fee and take a public boat from the Tortuguero main dock.

14. Fishing Tour

Fishing off the coast of Tortuguero

Fishing is a huge industry in Tortuguero, and it’s one of the most popular spots on the globe for sport fishing!

Take a  tour with a pro from Mr. Eddie Brown’s Company  and get the chance to catch and release fish like the Tarpon, Snook, Marlin, and Sailfish. The catch and release policy ensure the fish population is protected.

The prehistoric-looking Tarpon is a species that is over 80 million years old and is one of the toughest game fish to catch. The Tarpon fishing season lasts from January to June. Bass can typically be caught from September to December. You’ll find large quantities of Sailfish, Marlin, and Tuna offshore as well.

These tours have specialized fishing boats and all the required permits and insurance, so you can just head out and enjoy. There are half-day ($400 USD for two people) and full-day options ($600 USD for two people) to choose from.

Day trips from San Jose or Puerto Limon to Tortuguero

A local drives a boat through Tortuguero National Park

If you’re hoping to pay a visit to Tortuguero and are short on time, it’s totally possible to do day trips to Tortuguero National Park. This lets you immerse yourself in this amazing wetland rainforest for the day and then return to a larger center to continue your time in Costa Rica. I’ll take you through a couple of options for day trips to Tortuguero from San Jose and Puerto Limon.

San Jose

The only way to get to Tortuguero is by plane or boat. Taking a boat is the more popular option as it’s cheaper and typically more convenient. You’ll need to drive yourself or take the bus from San Jose to Moin or La Pavona and then take a boat to Tortuguero.

There are daily flights from San Jose to the small landing strip in Tortuguero that will take under an hour. However, this is typically more expensive (about $100 USD one-way), so not the best choice for a budget-friendly day trip.

I recommend booking a guided day trip tour to Tortuguero, so your transportation is completely taken care of! This full-day tour from San Jose to Tortuguero National Park  includes a boat trip through the jungle of the park and a walk through Tortuguero Village. It’s 12 hours long, and the $195 USD per person price tag also includes breakfast, lunch, and the park entrance fee.

Related Read: Read about the best day trips from San Jose for other fun tours and activities!

Puerto Limon

If you’re leaving from Puerto Limon , you’re very close to the Moin’s Private Dock. The tour around Tortuguero from here is around 3-3.5 hours, and boats typically leave around 10 am.

I’m a big fan of booking a day trip tour with this option as well to take all the guesswork out of navigating your schedule. This tour from Puerto Limon to Tortuguero  is four hours long and really reasonable at $75 USD per person.

The tour includes transportation to the national park and then a tour aboard an open-sided jungle pontoon boat to explore the canals. Your guide will help point out animals like monkeys, toucans, and sloths , as well as plants like gorgeous orchids and water lilies.

Note: You can also visit Tortuguero on a day trip from Puerto Viejo . The drive from Puerto Viejo to Puerto Limon or Moin’s Dock is only about an hour or so.

Aracari Garden Hostel – $

The property has a restaurant with live music during dinner. Room rates begin at $162 USD/night. You can check availability and book La Baula Lodge on Booking.com here and on Expedia here .

All of the rooms have a private balcony with a hammock. Rates begin at $150 USD/night You can check availability and book a room at Mawamba Lodge on Expedia here and on Hotels.com here .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

resting turtles in beautiful Tortuguero, Costa Rica

Tortuguero, which means “region of turtles” in Spanish, is one of the country’s most important nesting sites for the Leatherback, Loggerhead, and Hawksbill sea turtles. Taking a tour of the beaches offers visitors the chance to see baby turtles scrambling toward the shore for the first time.

Surrounded by jungle, Tortuguero feels like a place far from civilization. It’s the perfect spot to relax, disconnect, and commune with nature. While it’s still in the top 5 of most visited national parks in Costa Rica, much fewer visitors come here as it’s so remote. The tiny village of Tortuguero is centered around the tourists who do come here, yet it’s a much more laidback, nature-focused crowd than you’ll find on the more popular beach towns on the Pacific Coast (there are no late nights drinking here as everyone gets up early to spot wildlife)!

I highly recommend visiting Tortuguero when you are in Costa Rica . The national park, which spans over 300 square kilometers (115 square miles), is home to a lush Amazon-like rainforest with over 800 species of wildlife, including tapirs, ocelots, jaguars, coatis, manatees, and more!

This travel guide to Tortuguero will help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this lush paradise!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Tortuguero

Close-up of a black bird sitting on a rock in a river in Tortuguero National Park, costa Rica

1. Visit Tortuguero National Park

Established in 1975, this national park is a significant turtle nesting site and one of the most important in the world for endangered green turtles. There is also a ton of other wildlife here, including jaguars, ocelots, toucans, eagles, monkeys, and more! There are a couple of trails you can hike but boat tours are pretty much the only way to get around. Admission is $15 USD. Boat tours are $30-45 USD.

2. Go canoeing or kayaking

If you are keen to explore the waterways at your own leisurely pace, consider setting off in a canoe or kayaks. This way you’ll be able to explore some of the harder-to-reach areas and allows you to get away from the crowds of motorboats. There are several places in town to rent your own, which usually costs about $20 USD per day (a two-hour tour with a guide costs around $30-40 USD).

3. Chill on the beach

This is Costa Rica after all, so be sure to spend some time relaxing by the ocean. Tortuguero Beach is where most people hang out. It’s considered one of the most stunning beaches in the country. You can’t swim here, however, as there have been lots of shark attacks and the currents are very strong, but it’s great for relaxing with a picnic and a book.

4. Go on a bird-watching tour

There are over 300 bird species in Tortuguero. Keep an eye out for green ibises, great potoos, scarlet macaws, green macaws, and kingfishers. It’s hard to spot these birds on your own though (especially if you’re not a birder and don’t know what you’re looking for), and it’s really best to go with a local guide that can point out different species and explain more about them. Guided tours start from $65 USD.

5. Do a turtle tour

Green turtles are the most common species here, but you might also see Leatherbacks, Hawksbill, and Loggerhead turtles. During nesting season (July-October), Tortuguero is busy with turtle-watching tourists so be sure to book in advance. This is definitely the highlight of the region and should not be missed! Turtle tours take place at night and are around $35-45 USD.

Other Things to See and Do in Tortuguero

1. visit turtle hill.

Tortuguero Cerro (it’s actually a small, inactive volcano) is the highest point on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. The hike up to the summit of the hill is steep but on paved pathways, so it’s not too strenuous. As you make your way through the jungle, look out for howler monkeys and blue jeans poison dart frogs, both of which are common here. There are several hundred steps to climb to reach the top, where you’ll be rewarded with a panorama view of the landscape. You can get to the base of Tortuguero Cerro to start your hike by taking a 10-minute boat ride from the village. The entrance to the park here costs $2 USD.

2. Broaden your turtle knowledge

Though it may be small, the Sea Turtle Conservancy (formerly Caribbean Conservation Corporation’s Visitors’ Center and Museum) in Tortuguero village is filled with information on turtles, as well as on flora and fauna in the area. It’s small but super informative and a good place to start learning about the region’s wildlife. Admission is $2.50 USD. They also provide eight-day volunteer stays where you can work directly with the turtles for $1,890 USD (this includes food, lodging, volunteer training, and local tours).

3. Take a short hike

The two-mile Gavilan Trail lets you get up close to the nearby jungle. The trail isn’t too challenging, however, make sure to rent rubber boots at the entrance to the trail because it tends to get muddy. If you want a guided hike deeper into the jungle, you’ll pay about $75-95 USD for a full day.

4. Take a night tour

Night tours offer the best chance of catching a glimpse of the many nocturnal creatures that inhabit the area. You’ll meander down trails while the tour guide shines a spotlight to illuminate crocodiles, frogs, caimans, crabs, bats, and more. It’s a unique way to explore the jungle and get a new perspective on the wildlife that calls it home. Expect to pay around $35-40 USD.

5. Go fishing

All the canals here offer plenty of fishing opportunities. The lodges, as well as some independent operators in town, can even cook what you catch for dinner. Common fish here include tarpon, snook, red snapper, rainbow bass, and barracuda. Tortuguero Adventures can quote you a rate based on your budget (you can go fishing in a canoe, kayak, or go out in a larger motorboat, depending on how much you want to spend).

6. Take a canopy tour

After exploring the waterways, consider getting an aerial view of the rainforest by taking a canopy tour. The zip lines and suspended bridges allow you to get up close and personal with the vegetation and wildlife at the top of the rainforest.Plus, it’s super fun! While the Tortuguero area is not as well known for zip lining as places like Monteverde and Arenal , it’s a great place to try it if you want to zip line at a reduced cost (it’s half the price here than these more popular spots). There’s just one place to zip line in Tortuguero, where tours start around $35 USD.

Tortuguero Travel Costs

A colorful sunset along the beach in Tortuguero, Costa Rica

Hostel prices – There are only a couple of hostels here, and prices are the same all year around. It costs $12-15 USD per night for a bed in a 4-6-bed dorm. Private rooms with an ensuite bathroom cost around $30-45 USD.

Expect basic facilities with free WiFi and communal kitchens, but not free breakfast.

Budget hotel prices – Nightly rates for hotels are around $40-60 USD. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and a coffee/tea maker. Some budget hotels also have pools or include free breakfast.

Most hostels and hotels offer discounts on tours and transportation when you book with them.

Airbnb is available here, however, the options are limited and expensive. Expect to spend $60 USD for a private room and at least $100 USD for an entire apartment, at a minimum. I wouldn’t suggest using Airbnb here though (most listings you’ll find on Airbnb are for hotels or hostels anyway). You’re better off sticking to hostels and lodges with organized tours as it is next to impossible to explore Tortuguero on your own.

Food – Costa Rican cuisine is centered around rice and beans, which are usually eaten for every meal. Potatoes, plantain, pork, and beef are also popular. Gallo pinto (rice and bean stir-fry) is the national dish. You’ll find it mixed with eggs for breakfast. Casado is a typical lunch dish, which consists of rice, beans, veggies, fresh salad, and your choice of meat. As it’s located on the coast, seafood and fish dishes are common in Tortuguero.

Note: While you can easily pay for tours and entrance fees in USD, in smaller places such as local restaurants, you’ll need colones (CRC). Prices in this section are in CRC to reflect this.

Tortuguero’s village has small family-owned sodas and restaurants catering to travelers. Stick to the sodas to save money, as a lot of the other restaurants can get pricey due to the remote location and difficulty of importing food here.

At sodas , casado (rice, beans, veggies, and meat) goes for about 4,300-5,500 CRC, while a basic fast food burger, personal pizza, or burrito is around 3,500-4,000 CRC. Seafood dishes start at 6,000 CRC. You can get pastries and baked goods for as little as 1,500 CRC.

At mid-range “Western” restaurants, you can get pasta dishes for around 6,000 CRC, a burger for 7,000-7,500 CRC, grilled chicken for 8,000 CRC, and a steak is at least 10,000 CRC. Seafood dishes start at 10,000 CRC for a basic fish dish, all the way up to lobster starting at 26,000 CRC.

A domestic beer costs around 1,800-2,200 CRC, a cocktail is 3,500-4,200 CRC, a glass of wine is 3,000 CRC a latte is 1,500 CRC, and bottled water is around 1,000 CRC. Smoothies cost around 1,500-2,500 CRC.

If you’re staying at a lodge, sometimes you can opt to have meals (or at least breakfast) included in the price. Chances are, you’ll be eating, sleeping, and doing tours from whatever place you decide to stay.

If you cook for yourself, you’ll spend at least 30,000 CRC on groceries per week, which gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, bread, veggies, and some meat. Groceries (like all food) is expensive here and supplies are limited.

Backpacking Tortuguero Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Tortuguero, expect to spend about $55 USD per day. This budget covers a hostel dorm, a few water taxis, street food and self-catered meals, a couple of cheap beers, entry to the national park, and free activities (like hanging on the beach).

A mid-range budget of about $115 USD covers staying in a private hostel room or budget hotel, eating out for more meals, a guided tour (such as hiking, fishing, bird-watching), a few more water taxi rides, and some drinks out at the bar.

On a “luxury” budget of about $195 USD or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat any meals you want, drink as much as you’d like, take more guided tours, and explore as much as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Tortuguero Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

There aren’t too many ways to save money in Tortuguero, as you’re likely here to do some tours and see the sights. Here are some suggested ways to save money in Tortuguero:

  • Take advantage of happy hour – Some places around the village have great drink specials. Ask your hotel/hostel staff where to find them.
  • Eat at the sodas – “Sodas” are small family-run restaurants that specialize in inexpensive local meals, usually costing around 3,000-3,500 CRC. These hole-in-the-wall restaurants offer the best value in the region.
  • Pack a water bottle – A reusable water bottle with a filter will help you save money and thousands of plastic bottles by purifying the tap water for you (the tap water isn’t safe to drink without a filter). My preferred bottle is LifeStraw .

Where to Stay in Tortuguero

There aren’t a lot of accommodation options in Tortuguero, but luckily there are a few budget-friendly places. It’s best to stay in or near the village of Tortuguero as that’s where all tours and boats leave from. Here are of my suggested places to stay:

  • Aracari Garden Hostel
  • El Hostel del Patio
  • Cabinas Tortuguero
  • El Hotel Icaco Tortuguero

How to Get Around Tortuguero

A basilisk lizard sitting in a tree in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Walking – There are no motor vehicles in the village of Tortuguero, just one main, pedestrianized street. To access the rest of the national park, you’ll need to travel by boat.

Water Taxi – There are no roads around Tortuguero — the only way to get around is by a water taxi on the local waterways. Prices depend entirely on where you’re going, but expect to pay at least 2,000 CRC.

Your accommodation may also offer options for you to get around, via tours or their own water taxi service so be sure to check with them on arrival. Tours also include pickup from your accommodation if not at an easily accessible meetup point.

When to Go to Tortuguero

Tortuguero is very hot and humid year-round, with daily temperatures often around 32°C (89°F). It’s also one of the wettest places in Costa Rica — hence all the flora and fauna! It rains year-round, but December and January are the rainiest months.

September, October, and February are the driest months.

If you’re here specifically for the turtles, July-October is the best time to visit. In November, you might see baby turtles hatching. Keep in mind that accommodations fill up during this time as people are keen to see the turtles. Make sure you book your hostel and tours way in advance (especially since accommodations are limited), and expect inflated prices if you book last minute.

If you’re here during prime turtle-viewing times, expect crowds.

How to Stay Safe in Tortuguero

Costa Rica is one of the safest countries for traveling and backpacking in Central America. Tortuguero has a small population, and it’s very isolated, so petty crime here is a lower risk than other places due to the lack of people around.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

Don’t swim at Tortuguero Beach. Shark attacks and powerful currents make the waters here very dangerous. The locals don’t do it, and neither should you.

If you’re booking a tour, make sure you’re getting a qualified guide. Only licensed guides are allowed to lead tours. Some scammers will do anything to get you to book a tour with them, including giving you false information about the safety of certain routes and other tour companies. When in doubt, do your research ahead of time or consult with the people at your accommodations.

If you’re worried about getting scammed, you can read about common travel scams to avoid here.

If you experience an emergency, dial 911.

For more in-depth coverage of how to stay safe in Costa Rica, check out this post we wrote that answers some frequently asked questions and concerns.

And be sure to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Tortuguero Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

Tortuguero Packages and Tours from San Jose

October 14, 2018 By Sammi 28 Comments

If you want to visit Tortuguero , Costa Rica there are a few ways to do so. You can travel independently and book everything on your own or you can book a Tortuguero package. Many of the big hotels offer one day or overnight Tortuguero packages that includes roundtrip transportation (shuttle and boat), food, guide, lodging and activities.

Since getting to Tortuguero can take quite a bit of planning (no road access), many visitors prefer to book an all-inclusive Tortuguero packages. We did this recently with Pachira, the biggest operator of Tortuguero tours from San Jose . With Pachira, we booked the one of the Tortuguero packages which you can read about our experience below.

If you’d like to book a Tortuguero package, we have a small discount with Pachira! Click to get the Tortuguero package discount !

Tortuguero 2 day tour

Since Tortuguero is a very small place, 1 or 2 nights in Tortuguero is plenty of time to enjoy the area. However, you can stay for as you like.

This was our Tortuguero 3 days, 2 night itinerary but the schedule is subject to change depending on the conditions and weather.

What is included in our Pachira Tortuguero package

Roundtrip transportation (shuttle and boat)

Bilingual guide

Meals (starting from pick up in San Jose and ending with drop off in San Jose) and coffee

Tortuguero boat canal tour, nature walk and Tortuguero town tour

Accommodation

What is not included in the Tortuguero packages

National park fees

Additional activities like turtle tour, ziplining, etc.

Bottled water, cocktails, soda, juice

Day 1: Leave from San Jose, Journey to Tortuguero

Pick up from san jose.

Our first day started bright and early. We got picked up at our hotel in San Jose at 630 AM and they took us to the Pachira restaurant in Guapiles for breakfast (about 2 hour drive). From Guapiles, we had another 1 hour or so drive to La Pavona dock, where we took the boat to Tortuguero.

Tortuguero Boat Ride

Since Tortuguero is a rainforest covered sandbar with no road access, the only way in is by boat or plane. Although the boat takes longer, it’s quite an adventure! You have to boat down a large river for about 1 hour until you reach the town.

Tortuguero Packages - Tortuguero boat ride

The boat ride is like a wildlife watching river tour. Our guide and boat captain pointed out wildlife to us like iguanas, herons, kingfishers and caimans on the way and the scenery was beautiful. It’s one of the reasons why we think Tortuguero is a great first destination in Costa Rica. You get that quintessential “jungle” experience that everyone expects when they visit Costa Rica!

One thing to note is that this boat ride can take longer than 1 hour depending on the tide. When we were going to Tortuguero, it took us almost 2 hours because the tide was so low! On our way back, it was only one hour. (Make sure you use the bathroom before!)

Arriving in Tortuguero

When we finally arrived in Tortuguero, we got dropped off at Evergreen Lodge where we were staying. The second time we stayed at Pachira Lodge (both lodges are owned by Pachira). Since we arrived right at noon, we first had lunch and then went to our rooms to relax and change.

"<yoastmark

We stayed in one of the new standalone bungalows on the Pachira property which was really nice since there were only a few of them around. As soon as we got to our room, we had a troop of spider monkeys pass by in the trees next to us! Unfortunately their rooms don’t have air conditioning but it does cool down at night and there are fans.

Our next activity was a trip to Tortuguero town at 230 PM so we had a little bit of time to relax.

Tortuguero Town Tour

Pachira Lodge is only a 2 minute boat ride to Tortuguero, the biggest village in the area. It’s the main tourism hub of the area with its own entrance to the national park, flanked on either side by the ocean and river.

Our guide gave us the rest of the afternoon to explore town and walk on the beach. We decided to walk on the beach first and got super lucky as we arrived right at the moment a nest of baby turtles hatched!

"<yoastmark

After watching the babies make their way out to sea, we walked back to town to check it out. Tortuguero village is not big at all, it’s only about half a kilometer from one end to another! It was a blistering hot day so we got some pipa frias (cold coconut water), ice cream and browsed around the souvenir stores.

Our boat came to pick us up at 5 PM to bring us back to the lodge but our guide did also give us the option to stay longer if we wanted. A boat ride back to Pachira from Tortuguero costs $3 one way so some people stayed behind.

For the rest of the day, we relaxed, had dinner and enjoyed the night. When we visited in September, we went on a turtle tour at night.

Tortuguero Turtle Tours

Turtle tours are not included in the package so you will have to pay separately for them. They are $35 per person and run every night during turtle nesting season. Leatherback turtles nest March – May and Green Turtles nest July – October.

When we first visited Tortuguero, it was in November so we didn’t take a turtle tour as the nesting season was over. The second time was in September and we saw 4 green turtles on a tour.

Day 2: Tortuguero Boat Tour and Nature Walk

The next day, we woke up nice and early to go on the Tortuguero National Park boat tour. Since wildlife is most active after sunrise and sunset, we met our group at 530 AM sharp.

First, since the national park fee is not included, we boated over to the park entrance first to pay for tickets. Then off we went into the canals!

Tortuguero packages - boat tour

Did you know that Tortuguero’s nickname is “Little Amazon?” This is because this area is completely made up of long winding canals! It’s also one of the best places to see wildlife in Costa Rica thanks to the humidity keeping the rainforest lush all year long.

On this 2 hour boat ride, we saw toucans, macaws, river birds, a sloth, monkeys, caimans, iguanas and baby crocodiles.

Tortuguero packages - Tortuguero Wildlife

Yes, we saw all that wildlife from the boat! It was incredible to see. Make sure to bring a telephoto zoom lens to get good photos!

After the boat ride, we went back to the lodge. It was around 8 AM so we had breakfast. Then we had some down time until the next activity which was the nature walk on the Pachira property.

Our guide also gave our group the option to do a ziplining tour at 9 AM. It’s a pretty good deal at $35 per person!

Nature Walk

Pachira Lodge has a 1 kilometer trail on their property that is nicely maintained and easy to walk (accessible for handicap and disabled visitors).

Tortuguero packages - Pachira nature walk

This walk focused more on the rainforest as our guide pointed out various plants, trees and flowers. We did see a couple of monkeys, a sloth and porcupine though!

After the nature walk, the rest of the day was ours to do what we pleased.

Day 3: Leave Tortuguero, Return to San Jose

Now it was time to return to San Jose. We had breakfast and took the boat back to La Pavona at 9 AM. And like on our way to Tortuguero, we stopped at the Pachira restaurant for lunch.

Pachira drops their guests off back in San Jose but they do offer an option if you want to rent a car after Tortuguero and not go back to San Jose. We rented a car with Adobe Rent a Car so we arranged with Pachira and Adobe to get dropped off at the Adobe meeting point in Guapiles to get our car.

This was very convenient and saved us a ton of time. From the Rio Blanco gas station in Guapiles, we headed to La Fortuna, our next destination so we didn’t need to go all the way back to battle the San Jose traffic!

Video of our Tortuguero Overnight Trip

Here’s a video we made of our Tortuguero trip.

Pros and Cons of Tortuguero Packages

We really enjoyed our time on the Tortuguero overnight package. The first time we did a one night, two day and the second time we stayed for four nights with Pachira.

  • Pachira makes it super easy to visit Tortuguero as it’s an all-inclusive package. You don’t have to worry about transportation, driving, arranging activities or anything!
  • Having a guide was also very nice. They told us where to go, what time meals were and arranged all the activities for us.
  • You don’t waste time on their packages since they have everything pre-organized for you.
  • The lodges are very nice and the property was beautifully landscaped and full of wildlife. If you want to stay in the jungle, then these lodges offer great experiences. You won’t be able to see any wildlife in you stay in the village.
  • Not much flexibility. Since they have a pre-set itinerary, you don’t have a ton of time to go off on your own unless you stay more nights.
  • There are a lot of people during high season (July, August, December and January) visiting Tortuguero in general, not just with Pachira. You can feel like a cow in a herd because there are so many people!
  • Depending on where you stay, it can kind of feel like a resort. Pachira is bigger and more resort-y so if you’re looking for something quieter, stay at Evergreen or Aninga (more on the lodges below).

When it comes to prices, a package is definitely a little bit more expensive than if you traveled independently and stayed in town where there are hostels and cheap lodging. But you get to stay at a nice hotel, everything is included and you are taken care of which is the main reason why people book packages. It is easy!

Pachira, Evergreen and Aninga Lodges Review

Now let’s talk about the lodges.

Pachira, Evergreen and Aninga Lodge are all owned by the same group, Pachira. Their rates and packages are exactly the same and they have a similar set up with a dining room, pool, sitting and Wi-Fi areas and being located on the river canals. However, there are a few differences.

Evergreen: All standalone bungalows and has 2 sections: monkey garden and the rest. Monkey garden is very quiet as it’s smaller and more deep in the forest. Has more wildlife on the property since it’s right next to the national park.

Pachira: The biggest property with standard hotel style rooms, a large pool, bar and a few standalone bungalows. This has a more resort-y feel so it’s great for big groups or families since the property is so big.

Aninga: Smallest property of the 3. All have standalone bungalows and is much quieter and more intimate. Ideal for couples or those who don’t want to be around a lot of people.

We have stayed at Evergreen and Pachira and spent a day at Aninga. Our personal favorite is Aninga since it’s much quieter but each one can cater and fulfill the need of the traveler (families, couples, solo, etc.).
