The structure dates back to the 3rd century and used to be a base for the Seljuk Navy before turning into a vital trading point amongst the central Mediterranean countries.

6. Walk Through Dim Cave

Dim Cave is another cave system in the Alanya area. This cave is quite small, but it’s super atmospheric, which gives it an almost other-worldly feel.

Located in Dim Valley, you’ll walk to the cave through a forested area, which is wonderfully cool no matter the time of year. Around 360 meters of the cave are open to the public and fully lit so that you can see the stalagmites and stalactites inside. There are also four separate chambers to explore, along with a small pond.

The entire Antalya province enjoys mild winters, too, with some very warm days where you can walk around in just a T-shirt and jeans. However, the sea is very cold so swimming isn’t advisable!

Between the end of June and the end of August, Alanya is extremely busy and very hot. If you don’t enjoy crowds and heat, the shoulder months of May, the beginning of June, September, and October are great times to visit. The weather is still very warm, beach time is totally possible, and you’ll find accommodation slightly cheaper at this time, as the Turkish and European school holidays are over, meaning fewer crowds.

And while you can certainly get a good feel for history as you explore, you’ll also find some of the hippest restaurants, bars, shows, and clubs in the region – plus lots of excellent spots for younger travelers to cut loose!

1 – Mosey around Alanya Castle

This is the perfect place to begin exploring the city – after all, it’s pretty hard to miss!

A stunning 13th-century relic, Alanya Castle (Kalesi) sweeps across the cliffs around town, with a commanding view of the ocean and the surrounding area.

Like the many structures that came before it, the fortress was designed as a protective measure, though it eventually became more of a residential space.

Its stunning walls are helmed by the iconic Red Tower (see #5), whose gorgeous octagonal form has been part of the city since its heyday as the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk empire.

And many elements of the castle’s different eras can still be seen throughout the space, from ancient items to beautiful carvings along the walls.

You can also take a look at the Mecuddin Cistern, a stone and brick structure was once crucial to the local water supply.

While there are plenty of other similar devices around town – roughly 420 of them! -, this one is certainly one of the biggest and most impressive, at 13 meters wide and 22.5 meters deep… and it still stores and distributes fresh water to this very day!

2 – Admire the artifacts of the Alanya Archaeological Museum

Even further in the past, you’ll find weapons, pottery, and maybe even a Greek hero or two at the Alanya Archaeological Museum , where antiquity feels closer than ever.

Its distinctive shape and red brick design have helped it become an iconic part of the city, but it’s the story behind it that makes it even more interesting.

The structure was originally commissioned by Sultan Alaeddin Keyqubad I in 1226, and from the start, it was designed to be a military powerhouse, able to hold thousands of soldiers if need be.

Indeed, the spectacular views that you can enjoy today were once crucial tools for the local army, as they kept an eye out for marauding forces.

The three distinctive towers were designed to watch for enemies, while the structure as a whole was meant to protect the valuable inner sanctum of the castle.

The structure also took on other forms over time, hosting a prison and a vast supply of weapons, and even holding the royal treasury for a time!

Sure, hot springs are great… but they’re even better when they’re nestled in otherworldly settings!

The name Pamukkale translates to “Cotton Castle,” and its inspiration is wonderfully self-evident; the strikingly blue waters are completely surrounded by gorgeous rock formations that glisten white against the landscape.

In Hierapolis, you also can see some excellent examples of marble sarcophagi (ancient graves) with beautiful carvings.

Alanya Pamukkale Tour Itinerary

A comfortable, air-conditioned coach will pick you up from your hotel at approximately 03:30.

After a short drive, you will have a breakfast stop in a restaurant. You can either pay and enjoy the breakfast offered in the restaurant or bring breakfast boxes from your hotel.

After arriving in Pamukkale, you will have a tour of Hierapolis and the surrounding sights. Your guide will inform you about the site and answer any questions. After a short walk with your guide, you will reach the pool complex and have a 3-hour of free time.

Cleopatra’s pool is in the middle of Pamukkale. It is a big complex with multiple restaurants, cafeterias, toilets, changing rooms and sunbeds. As it is in the middle of everything, you can visit a sight, return to the pool for refreshments, and move to the next sight. Your guide will indicate where he will be waiting for you, and you can ask your questions about the sights whenever you come to the pool complex.

Hierapolis Ancient City

In your free time, you can explore the ruins of the Hierapolis ancient city, such as baths, agora, latrina, theatre and temples. Hierapolis is also home to the biggest Necropolis in Turkey. You can see beautiful marble sarcophagi with carvings.

White Travertines

Something you shouldn’t miss is the white travertines of Pamukkale. The travertine terraces are filled with thermal water, and the depth of the water is roughly 10 – 20 centimetres. So you can lie on the terraces, enjoy the thermal waters and take amazing photos there.

Pool of Cleopatra

You can also swim in this thermal water’s core – the Pool of Cleopatra. Water is just above the body temperature, 36 degrees Celsius. After an earthquake, ancient columns surrounding the pool have dropped into the pool and are still there. So if you consider swimming, you will swim among history.

After the visit of Pamukkale, it’s time to return to Alanya. With some comfort breaks on the way, you should arrive back at your pick-up point between 20:30 and 21:00.
