By Kathryn Steane

15th Apr 2024

A man splashes a child at Rainbow's End, clearly having a lot of fun.

Being in charge of young ones can be tough, but it can also be a hell of a lot of fun. Especially when you throw an exciting adventure away from the house into the mix.

That's where this list of the 50 best things to do with kids in Auckland comes in—from animal parks and art galleries to ice cream shops and escape rooms, consider it your one-way ticket to never hearing the words 'I'm booored', ever again. You're welcome.

Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (Goat Island)

Leigh, auckland.

A group of kids give the thumbs up while snorkelling in the water at Goat Island Marine Reserve.

Nothing beats cuddles with a cat. Get your fill at Purrs & Beans , where they have a 12-strong crew of felines to get amongst along with cookies, smoothies, and coffee (because adults deserve a treat too). Up the ante by heading along to one of their exclusive movie nights. Can't get enough of the pats? Here are the best cat cafes around Aotearoa .

Muriwai Beach Horse Trek

Horsepark, coast road, muriwai, auckland.

Round up your wee cowboys and cowgirls for a Muriwai Beach Horse Trek . Think of it as the Wild West (it is out west, after all) but with lush forests and black sand beaches in place of abandoned towns and tumbleweeds. Yeehaw.

Brick Bay Sculpture Trail

17 arabella lane, snells beach, auckland.

Get amongst some incredible local art at the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail . Fun Shit To Do In The School Holidays.

Day drinking is fun, but what about the kids? You’ll need to keep them entertained as well. Here’s some great ideas to keep them from driving you insane these school holidays.

Dump the kids at Snowplanet and run. Or stay in the restaurant, day drinking, while you watch them through the glass. Great school holiday program if you want to do it every day too.

Scare the shit out of them at Spookers. It’s great for older kids and teens. Otherwise you’ll just end up with them in your bed having nightmares when you’re trying sleep off all that day drinking.

Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari

Kind of pricey for a school holiday activity but totally awesome. Go see dolphins, orca, or bryde’s whales in the Hauraki Gulf .

Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq

Arcade games and bowling with a cool vibe. And you guessed it an excellent bar.

Rainbows End

The ever popular Rainbows End. New Zealand’s best theme park. Short of a trip to the Gold Coast this is the best you’re gonna find if you’re looking for roller coasters.

VR Voom (Virtual Reality)

Like make believe only with no imagination required. With VR Voom you can be a race car driver, a sword master, a time traveller, a deep sea explorer, or just about anything. This one’s great for rainy days .

Escape Room

Who hasn’t wanted to lock their kids up sometime during the school holidays. Well now you can at an escape room. Auckland now has plenty to choose from but only some of them have special drinks for Mummy and Daddy so choose wisely.

Wero White Water Park

That the kids white water rafting. Yup you can do that in Manukau, just down the road from Rainbows End. Wero White Water Park is an awesome way to get the kids off the couch and outside.

Lock’n Load Adventures

This is a great activity for the second week of the school holidays. By then you’ll be ready to shoot the little bastards. And at Lock’n Load you can do exactly that.

Rocket Ropes

Get high with the kids at Rocket Ropes.

Lilliput Mini Golf

Mini Golf is pretty painful, but kids love it and at least the views nice at Lilli Putt Mission Bay. And you can go for lunch in Mission Bay when you’re done.

EcoZip Adventures ( Waiheke Island )

This one’s pretty pricey too but some of youse fullas are rich as. You take the ferry to Waiheke which is fun too, then you eco zip, quick spot of lunch and sample some local wine (not the kids, just you). Then ferry back home.

Hampton Downs Go-Karts

Best go karts in Auckland. 1 hour’s drive from the CBD but totally worth it. Go Karting isn’t cheap, but it is fun, so maybe do it anyway.

Blastacars Drift Karts

Why? Because bogans get school holidays too. This is seriously fun. Make a day of it, watch Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift in the morning. Then hit the drift carts for real in the afternoon.

Victoria Street Skatepark

Good cheap holiday fun. Drop your kids at the skatepark, give them a couple of ciggys and a few bucks for lunch then come and get them at the end of the day.

Parakai Hot Springs

This is fun for everyone. If you don’t love a good hydro slide then there is something wrong with you. These are the best Auckland has to offer. The water is actually warm all year round and it’s great exercise running back up the tower, perfect if your kids are getting a little chunky.

Pick a Mall. Sylvia Park, Albany, New Market or Botany. Maybe drive past your usual and try somewhere new. Send the kids to the movies and grab a fancy lunch for yourself while they in there. Then take them to the food court, and pretend you’re not hungry.

Are your kids a bit nerdy? Then they might enjoy Motat. The Museum of Transport and Technology. I think the name about sums it up. Trains printing presses yawn yawn yawn. On th plus side it’s reasonably cheap and it’s a thing to do that get you out of the house.

Who doesn’t love the Zoo? Yes the animals are all in cages but they seem happy enough. And you can get really close to them and not get eaten.

Kelly Tarltons

I don’t know why but Kelly Tarltons always makes me crave Fish and Chips. It’s really a shame you can’t choose one and have them cook it for you right there. But you can go straight to Fish Market at Wynyard Quarter and get great fish and chips.

Silverdale Adventure Park

If you can’t afford to go to Rotorua to ride the luge then Silverdale Adventure Park is half the fun at half the price. A smaller slower luge, but it might satisfy the kids if they can’t really remember how awesome the real luge is.

Butterfly Creek

If your kids are still at primary school then Butterfly Creek has something for everyone. And by that I mean they have crocodiles for the boys and butterflies for the girls.

Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

If you don’t like boats don’t worry the Navy Museum is still awesome. It’s got a great cafe, a wharf you can swim off, and occasionally see dolphins and orcas from. It’s also next to North Head so you can go for a walk and take in the views. Maybe an ice-cream or some lunch in Devonport. If you’re not from the Shore then maximise your fun by taking the Ferry instead of driving.

All kids love going up the Sky Tower. Combine it with lunch or dinner, there’s a restaurant/cafe for every budget.

Auckland Museum

If you live in Auckland and have kids you’ve probably been here a 1000 times already but it’s the school holidays so it’s time to do it again. While you’re here make the kids go through the Winter Gardens as well. As long as you don’t try and make them stay to long they’ll like it.

New Zealand Maritime Museum

It’s a Museum about boats. You’ll either be into that or you won’t. If you’re not but still feel like you have to then don’t worry, they usually have activities for the kids during the holidays and there’s so many options to eat and drink nearby. Just do a little bit of penance looking at the boats then you’re free to indulge yourself. It’s more or an excuse to go to the Viaduct.

Holey Moley

Milkshakes for the kids and cocktails for the adults certainly makes mini golf a lot more tolerable. Especially if you do it late afternoon and head out for dinner afterwards.

Glass Bottom Boat

Drive to Goat Island and go on the glass bottom boat. It’ll take a full day. The boat ride is 45 minutes but the drive is one hour each way from the CBD. (not a rush hour). And you can visit the Marine Reserves excellent visitor centre and play at the beach.

Kids love the beach and it’s free apart from the ice-cream you’ll have to buy while you’re there. If it’s summer you’ll want a good swimming beach, like Orewa, Piha, Mission Bay, or Long Bay. But in the winter time the beach is still there, and a good time. Try a long beach walk at Whatipu, Bethells Beach, or Muriwai. Or head to a Regional park that has offers a good long walk and a beach. Duder is the best in East Auckland, and Shakespeare Regional Park is probably the best on the Shore. If you can’t be bothered driving that far then Long Bay has some great walks too.

Kids and teens all love the movies and if its school holiday time (and it is or you wouldn’t be reading this) then you can bet there’ll be plenty of superhero movies and animated shit that kids just can’t get enough of. Turn it into an adventure by going out of suburb. Try Mission Bay’s Berkeley Theatre, or Howick’s Monterey Theatre, or Northcotes Bridgeway Theatre. The movies are the same but you’ll find some different shit to do while you’re there. Or just head to your local if your all about the movie and less about the adventure.

Yup. For real, a picnic. If your kids are older they’ll hate you for making them do it. But if you get it right they’ll have fun in spite of themselves. First up, don’t attempt a picnic on a shit day. That won’t be fun for anyone. Make sure you find somewhere nice. No one wants a picnic in a shit spot. Mission Bay’s good, so’s the Auckland Domain, but Auckland has a 100 great spots. Bring lot’s of food, and drinks (maybe even a a cheeky wine or two). Make sure you’ve got blankets to sit on, cups, plates and most of all something to do. The more effort you put into it the better it’ll be. Hacky sack, frisbee, soccer or rugby ball, hell even a phone with Pokemon Go.

Campings fun. Not for everyone I hear you say. Well there’s levels to camping. Start somewhere civilised like Piha campground. There’s flushing toilets and hot showers, a cafe, a shop, and a restaurant. You don’t have to cook or use a long drop and the kids’ll love it. Give it a try for one night. Get a taste for it, then work your way up to DOC campground miles from anywhere with nothing but a longdrop and a million mosquitoes. Camping is a great way to use up several days with one activity. You’ll be through the holidays before you know it. Best of all drinking and camping go together like cheese and crackers.

Get Away for a few days

Try Rotorua , Taupo , Northland , or go all in and take the kids to Queenstown . Any of these tourist towns have plenty to offer families and you’ll always have the memories, and the photos. They say money doesn’t buy you happiness unless you spend it on shared experiences with people you love. And that’s exactly what a family getaway is all about. Go somewhere you haven’t been. Wellingtons got some awesome stuff for kids, Te Papa, a great Zoo, beautiful city and waterfront, and an awesome seal colony at Red Rocks, just out of the City. (There’s an even better one at Cape Palliser if you don’t mind the drive). Or drive the lost highway to New Plymouth, and take in the stunning Mt Taranaki, it must cheaper than a trip to see Mt Fuji in Japan.

It can be painful if you have to swim with toddlers but once they are old enough you don’t have to join in then a swimming pool is a great place to spend a few hours during the school holidays. Regardless of the weather. Auckland’s got public pools all over the place. West Wave is the best of them so if your local pools a bit shit especially if your kids are older, then get in the car and head west. They’ve got great indoor diving boards and a bombing wall. Failing that head out of town to the hot pools. Sadly Waiwera’s closed but Parakai’s still awesome, and Miranda Hot Pools is worth the drive if you’re in South or East Auckland. For a real adventure and a trip back in time try Ngaruawahia’s Waingaro Hot Springs . The pools a bit shit but the slides are awesome.

Explore  Kororipo Pā  which was built as a strategic site for northern Māori. 200 years ago the pā was the headquarters of Ngāpuhi chief Hongi Hika, a skilled leader in war and trade. A short track leads to a fortified lookout and stunning view over the Kerikeri Basin. Visit  Kerikeri Mission Station  which was established by the Church Missionary Society in 1819 under the protection of chief Hongi Hika who was keen to harness the trade and technology of Europe. At the heart of the Mission Station are two of the country’s oldest buildings, Kemp House and the Stone Store, our country’s oldest trading store.

Cycling Auckland’s waterfront makes for a flat, entertaining and family-friendly bike ride. You can begin near Westhaven Marina at the foot of the Harbour Bridge and ride, mostly on designated cycle paths, for 13 easy kilometres along the coastline to St Heliers. Cycle past the forest of masts in the marina, through the vibrant hospitality precincts of Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter and the Viaduct, to Tamaki Drive where you’ll wind your way around Auckland’s curvaceous coast to finish at St Heliers Beach. There are plenty of diversions to enjoy along the way, from hot coffees to refreshing paddles at any of the many beaches and bays. The seaside promenade path is popular with active types, especially on weekends, so be mindful of other riders, walkers and dogs and remember to keep left.

At Pūkaha  National Wildlife Centre at Mount Bruce in Wairarapa you’ll find a veritable laundry list of New Zealand’s avian wildlife: gregarious kākā, colourful kākāriki, the rare blue-wattled kōkako and the beautiful takahē. And if you prefer scales to feathers, the legendary tuatara are here as well, 200 million years old and counting. With all these species either vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered this is a unique opportunity to see them all in one place. It also gives you a real understanding of New Zealand itself and the wild and exotic creatures that once flourished here. Like going on a kind of ecological timewarp.

You can book guided tours or wander with your best bird-spotting binoculars, getting up close with some of our most special native species: birds, eels, lizards and fungi. And while it may be a visitor from across the ditch, the eucalyptus forest here is also home to New Zealand’s tallest tree.

6. Rob Roy Glacier Track

The drive the start of the Rob Roy Glacier Track, the slightly preposterous-sounding Raspberry Creek Car Park, is almost as adventurous as the walk to the top of the glacier, featuring multiple river crossings. But this stunning track , which takes you into Mount Aspiring National Park is worth the rugged drive. The hanging glaciers beneath Mt Rob Roy are magnificent; waterfalls scythe down the cliffs, great chunks of mountain seem to frame every view... and persistent kea will attempt to steal anything not nailed down.

7. Transport World

Transport World is the first and largest tourist attraction in Invercargill. It's also the biggest automotive museum of its type in the world. Founded by the late Bill Richardson, a classic car collector and aficionado, the centre takes a journey through automotive history. It is vast  –sprawling over 15,000m2; an entire city block through a purpose-built entrance and event space and then winding through a series of cavernous warehouses. The vehicle collection is immaculate, most of them painstakingly restored and 90% still roadworthy. Alongside many makes and models of classic cars, there are rare vehicles including the only 1914 Stuart in the world, and a wooden-spoked 1911 Koehler. There are also classic tractors, wearable arts, 250 beautifully-restored historic petrol pumps, a vintage tea towel collection, children’s pedal cars, die cast toy cars and a chronological collection of jukeboxes dating from 1935 until the 1980s.

Other things to do in Southland:

  • Catch the ferry to Ulva Island, Southland
  • Drive a digger at Dig This Invercargill
  • Visit the quirky Lost Gypsy in The Catlins

Driving into historic Reefton is like arriving on a Wild West movie set. What hits you first are the brightly-painted historic buildings lining both sides of Broadway. Beautifully restored by proud locals, they beckon you to stop and fossick for a quirky keepsake. Before you know it you’ll be panning for gold with the very bearded Bearded Miners and asking why the art gallery has a painted-over hole in the floor. Quartzopolis is what they used to call this quartz gold mining boom town, and that name still seems to fit. Gold is not Reefton’s only claim to fame. There’s also the light. In 1888 Reefton became the first place in the southern hemisphere to have commercial electric lighting, beating posh suburbs in New York and London. The forty-minute Bottled Lighting Powerhouse walk takes you past the remains of where the electricity was generated, especially handy if you need to walk off one of the town’s legendary pub meals.

Other things to do on the West Coast:

  • Soak in the hot pools at Maruia Springs
  • Take a wilderness jet boat safari in Haast
  • Go for a heli hike on Franz Josef Glacier

School holidays are a great time to travel with the kids. You'll find plenty of family-friendly attractions to keep your young ones entertained. Plus the springtime weather starts to settle, the drives are easy to manage, and the days are starting to get longer too!

To make it easier on yourself, why not consider hiring a campervan and escaping the big smoke. A  campervan trip with kids offers the convenience of a car but also includes everything else you'll need. Even a kitchen sink! A campervan holiday ramps up the chance to have an adventure but brings down the stress for mum, dad or any other adult coming along. You'll benefit from less packing and unpacking as you go, you'll be able to do everything at your own pace, and you'll leave the kids with some great memories along the way.

If you're feeling game, invite along a couple of families and create a convoy. The kids will have a fantastic time, and all the adults will get a chance for a break somewhere along the way!

Pick up a campervan from the  Britz Auckland airport branch and get on the road in no time. Here are ten fun family trips you could enjoy this October.

1. Head to Waitomo Caves

Less than 3 hours south of Auckland, Waitomo offers plenty of fresh air and fun for the kids.

Get started by exploring the three caves , each with something unique to offer. Kids will love spotting glowworms and marvelling at rock formations along the way.

Back above ground, take a bushwalk and spot some birds and animals in the wild. Check out the  Marokopa Falls Walk and the  Mangapohue Bridge Walk for inspiration. If you don't manage to spot any wildlife, pop along to the Waitomo Big Bird and Miniature Animal Petting Farm . Bring along some wheels and load them on the Britz bike racks so the whole family can get their legs pumping by cycling a section of the Pureora Timber Trail.

In case of bad weather, or to keep the grey matter working, head to escape from  Troll Cave and see just how quickly your family can escape!

Where to stay in Waitomo:

Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park  is one of many family-friendly campsites in the area. You'll find a playground, pool, free hot tub and modern shower and cooking facilities to keep everyone happy, clean and well-fed.

2. Escape to sunny Tauranga & Mount Maunganui

Head to Tauranga and the Mount for some pre-summer fun. These destinations are busy and famous for a good reason! There's plenty of things to do in Tauranga at the beach and beyond. Take a campervan and explore the wider Bay of Plenty region. You'll be there in fewer than three hours' drive from Auckland.

Once you're there, go ahead and hit the beach. Anyone with an ounce of coordination can have a go at learning to surf . If that sounds too hard, maybe a trip to the  Mount hot pools for a soak will do you good as well! Check out Waimarino Adventure Water Park for a spot of kayaking, a climbing wall and plenty of other activities to tire the family out. Enjoy a Picnic at McLaren Falls Park and head along to Marshalls Animal Park for a close-up and personal encounter with domestic and exotic animals.

Found yourself caught in the rain? Head to Rocktopia, or book a lane at Tauranga's Ten Pin bowling alley. You'll find options for karting and even a handful of virtual reality offerings at some of the museums around the region. No one will leave bored!

Go a little further with a campervan and check out:

Te Puke, where you'll find more kiwifruit than you know what to do with! Sample the locally grown produce, try the honey and chase some waterfalls, all in a day's work.

Papamoa Beach, one of Tauranga's fastest-growing communities. With loads of space to spread out, beachy kids will enjoy the sand and surf, while parents will enjoy the relaxed cafe vibe.

Pukehina, a small bay community where you can have a go at catching dinner by casting a line.

Ohope, where you'll find white sand beaches, and you'll feel like you're on an island get-away despite being less than 20 minutes away from the amenities of Whakatane.

Where to stay in Tauranga & Mount Maunganui:

Find yourself in the middle of all the action at the Mount Beachside Holiday Park, which includes plenty of family-friendly facilities, including four large BBQ areas for easy-breezy dinners.

If you're ready to get off the grid and experience freedom camping, there are plenty of council-approved campsites that you can take advantage of around the district. The thl roadtrip app will be your best friend for this!

Head straight there from Auckland, or take your time getting there and go via Hamilton, Matamata or after exploring the coromandel like the Pacific Coast Highway Itinerary recommends.

Rotorua offers both a great destination or a perfect stop along the way for a few nights on your family road trip.

Things to do in Rotorua with kids:

If surf, sand and sun are on your mind, Mahia beach, Waipariki beach, and Ocean Beach are all popular choices; just don't forget your sunnies and a hat! If you want to spot some marine life, the reserve between Black Head & Aramoana offers up chances for rock-pooling and scuba diving.

If your family is fit and adventurous, then  Waipu Coastal Trail  has various walks from 45min to 1½ hour which offer large Pohutukawa forests perched over steep limestone cliffs and impressive sea views . After sweating up a storm, head to the wild waters of Mangawhai Heads beach for a spot of surfing, or the harbour/estuary for calmer swimming or fishing. For a souvenir from your funtastic day, head to the Smashed Pipi Gallery for a wide selection of New Zealand artworks, including gorgeous ceramics, glass, jewellery, wood, textiles and floral art containers.

day trips

Goat Island

A day of discovery at Aotearoa’s most popular marine reserve will conjure up some good levels of excitement winter or summer. In summer, you’ll need your snorkel gear to follow schools of silvery fish as they swim through large forests of kelp and seaweed. If you’re lucky, you may even see a stingray or two gliding effortlessly through the crystal clear water.

Otherwise, if your children are less comfortable in the water, the Glass Bottom Boat Tour (running November to April) provides a similar experience. There is also kayaking all year round for those who feel at home on top of the water, and the Marine Discovery Centre gives you an (warm and undercover) insight of the ecosystems, including a cool touch-tank for the kids to pick up starfish and urchins.

Take walking gear and trek the Goat Island Coastal Walkway (45 minutes each way) for some spectacular views. Afterwards, round up the troops and enjoy a picnic and a wander around the rock pools,  or head out to one of Leigh’s delicious eateries. Leigh Sawmill Café has a large pizza menu perfect for families.

day trips

Escape the hustle bustle of city life and let the fresh country air relax you into holiday mode at Matakana Village. Start your day right with fresh food and award-winning coffees at the Matakana Market (on every Saturday 8am-1pm in the Market Square.) But don’t forget to bring your baskets and bags when you stock up as this market has a zero-waste policy!

After brekkie, head to Matakana Country Park for an exciting range of kid-friendly activities. Your kids will be transported to another world at the playground, as it is surrounded by beautifully constructed wooden playhouses, including a buzzy bee, fire truck and castle. If your tikes have an animal obsession, then buy a bag of grain and watch your kids giggle as slobbery animal tongues lick it from their hands.

Then end the day in style with a pony ride, cart ride, mini train ride or scenic bike ride. If the weather is wet and windy, make time to browse around the beautiful stores, including Artform Gallery , which contains many colourful ceramics, glass, and sculptures made by New Zealand artists. To continue on the art journey, a short trip down the road will bring you to The Sculptureum.  This is a gallery of hundreds of unique, inspiring, and imaginative pieces displayed within lush gardens and beautiful galleries. You can then finish the day off with a movie at Matakana Cinemas.

day trips

Wenderholm/Puhoi

To begin the day, head to Wenderholm Regional Park and choose from a selection of walks (between 15mins and 2 1/2 hours) that could see your family observing native birds in their natural habitat or capturing breathtaking views of the sandspit headland from the beach.

Next head to The  Puhoi Cheese Shop , Puhoi’s own slice of heaven, with indulgent treats such as double cream brie and goat feta. Just a short drive from Puhoi’s Cheese Shop is the Puhoi Pub , which character and charm will take you back in time to 1879, when the pub was established. You and your kids will marvel at the thousands of knick-knacks and pictures decorating the walls and will have full stomachs after a freshly-made meal.

Afterwards, have a wander down the road and peek into The French Shed , which specialises in beautiful French antiques such as armoires, french farmhouse tables, french beds, designer clothing, jewellery, and more. Before the car ride home be sure to visit Jamie Hanson Playground or Moana Reserve , for a quick run around, which will hopefully see your kids sleeping through the car ride home.

fun school trips auckland

Make your fantasy a reality and visit the film set that put New Zealand on the map! Bag End is situated on top of a hill overlooking rolling pastures and a towering pine tree known as “the party tree.” Walk around the glassy lake and watch your kids marvel at colourfully painted round doors and stunning gardens with delicate flowers. Don’t forget to take plenty of hilarious pictures with your hobbit family!

When little tummies begin to rumble head to The Shire’s Rest Café for hot food, or if there’s two or more adults, let one play babysitter while the other heads to The Green Dragon Inn for a traditional ale and old-timey food. In true hobbit style eat a large feast, but perhaps leave those shoes on!

day trips

Slip, slop, slap and wrap and don’t forget the jandals because black sand is beautiful to look at but not so nice to walk across! This is the perfect day trip for older children as the rough waters are ideal for strong swimmers or surfers. A walk up Takapu Refuge Walk brings you close to our white and gold friends, the gannets, and when the smell gets too much, head further along for a beautiful birds-eye view of rolling waves and rocky islands submerged in the sea.

Otherwise, if your kids are adrenaline junkies, Woodhill Forest is perfect year-round (but with different opening/closing times, depending on the season) for extreme activities such as mountain biking, paintball, Tree Adventures, motorcycling or horse riding.

day trips

Waiheke Island

Watch eager faces peer over the side of the ferry , and feel the wind and sea salt on your face as you embark on your Waiheke adventure! There is easy transport around this island via bikes , taxis or the bus. If you or your kids have ever dreamed of flying, then the Waiheke Zipline lets you fly across a canopy of beautiful native New Zealand bush. Following this, head to Little Frog Café for a delicious food. This café also caters for our vegetarian and vegan friends with food such as vegetarian lasagne, Buddha bowls, detox salad, smoothie bowls and vegan treats.

A short walk from this café is the Waiheke Community Art Gallery , your cultural fix of fascinating exhibits and sculptures. Then soak up some sun and burn off some energy at Palm Beach and playground or Little Oneroa Beach and playground. For a sweet end to the day, stop by Island Gelato company (open from spring until the end of April) for award winning ice cream. Or if it’s closed, then  Palm Beach Ice cream will curve that ice cream craving.

day trips

Start your day like royalty by relaxing in the thermally heated, fresh mineral water at Miranda Hot Springs. There are hotter pools for the adults to sink into and cooler pools for the kids to splash around in. When your kids become restless, direct their attention to the playground for a quick run around. After the pools, treat yourself and your kids to flaky fish and crispy chips at the famous Kaiaua Fish & Chip shop.

Next door is an old-style pub with evening food if you don’t feel like getting your hands greasy. For award-winning cheeses, head to the Mercer Cheese shop , a quaint Dutch establishment with huge rounds of cheeses. Then on your way home, stop off at the Original Pokeno Ice Cream & Coffee Shop and choose from a large selection of Tip Top flavours for a cheap and fully stacked ice cream.

LITTLE Q & As

Sometimes our children can sound like a broken record wanting and, needing everything in sight! It is times like this when can find ourselves going a bit crazy wanting to run from all the demands. One major tip to help avoid this, is teaching your child the difference between ‘want and need’. By explaining to your child there is a big difference between “I need a drink” or “I want a toy”, you will help your child understand when it’s the right time to ask for something and, hopefully will diminish the list of requirements for you!

Deal with any allergies and dehydration issues first as these can make picking seem necessary. Teach your child to use a handkerchief or tissue, as the main problem is the spreading of germs from fingers straight to the nasal cavity.

As parents we all will experience our children saying rude words, whether it is as small as be saying ‘poo’, or screaming a swear word in the middle of a supermarket. No matter the circumstance, it is our job as parents to teach the child what is acceptable language to use. When your child uses these inappropriate words you can… 1. Firmly explain this is a bad word and “we don’t use that word in this house”. 2. Set a rule that if this word is used again, there will be a punishment. 3. Ask if they understand this discussion you two have just had.
