A wonderful introduction to bike riding in France: this was our first bike ride in France, and we hope it won’t be our last.

The organisation (bikes, equipment, hotels, baggage transfer) was excellent, and the trip information (maps and detailed instructions) were very well done, and of huge assistance. We enjoyed staying in the smaller, family-run hotels, with friendly, personal service in picturesque small towns and villages.

Everything was amazing – great route with beautiful sites, excellent bikes, perfect maps/directions, quaint hotels – can’t wait for our next trip in just a few weeks!

The terrain is slightly hilly. You will encounter a short incline from time to time. With an e-bike and some cycling experience you should easily be able to handle this level. Daily distances span 30-65 km.

Wine

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

You travel independently to La Rochelle. Check in at your hotel. If you have arrived early, take a stroll through the capital of Charente-Maritime, vibrant and full of character, well known for its mild climate. Discover the lively Vieux Port full of outdoor cafés, busy shopping streets and the many town monuments.

As the famous towers which defend the port of La Rochelle hove into view, a cycle path section takes you to the Port of Minimes, then onto the Cove of Godechaud, right next to the sea. The delightful Bay of Châtelaillon comes into sight next and offers weary cyclists a very pleasant stopping point. After the Bay of Châtelaillon comes a pretty seaside section before heading back inland towards the ‘royal city’ of Rochefort. While the middle section of this route might appear somewhat commonplace, the remarkable town of Rochefort is well worth exploring.

Challenge : 48.4 km, 1278m ascent, 1265m descent

It’s with great regret that you leave behind Rochefort, its gardens on the banks of the Charente and its suspension bridge -the Viaduc de Martrou. You take the former steam-railway tracks, now a greenway and La Vélodyssée which brings you to the marshes, criss-crossed with little channels, before heading onto the oyster centre of Marennes. The Marennes Country, home to the leading oyster farms in Europe, spreads over salt marshes and the Seudre estuary. End of your cycling day in La Tremblade, an authentic village. In summer, the sea festival is a must: traditional boats, oyster opening competition, giant eclades and fireworks!

Challenge : 46,3 km, 201m ascent, 209m descent

You start today along the famous “Côte Sauvage”, here cycle paths are numerous and a truly memorable part of the route takes you through the forest of Coubre (and past its lighthouse the "Phare de la Coubre"). Further on, enjoy the splendid sea views. Following cycle lanes, the itinerary weaves through the coastal forest and past an array of pretty beaches, at one of which, is the charming village of Saint-Palais, before reaching the town of Royan. All you have to do is to enjoy this seaside resort and catch a boat tomorrow morning!

Challenge : 38.8 km, 256m ascent, 250m descent

Take the ferry to cross the estuary of the Gironde to reach the region Medoc famous for its great wines. Upon entering the Gironde, a new world reveals itself to travellers. If you don’t bring your own, you can rent a bicycle (hybrid or ebike) from us. You will find your rental bikes waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.  The frame and saddle height are set to your height, although you might want to adjust your saddle to be in the most comfortable position. We also recommend doing a first small test drive of couple of hundred meters to be comfortable with gears, brakes etc. If you have an issue with your bike, you can contact the service provider (name of bike rental in your reservation) directly. Or you can always call us on our emergency phone number.   Our hybrid touring bikes are at least 21-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below. Experience the advantages of an electric bike on your cycling holiday, particularly when there's a significant gap in ability and experience among cyclists. An e-bike provides a gentle boost up hills, allowing you to easily keep pace with your companions. With a small electric motor and battery, e-bikes make bike trips more achievable, and their batteries can be conveniently charged at hotels. While you still need to pedal, the e-bike significantly reduces the effort required. Familiarity with e-bikes is advised due to their quicker acceleration and heavier build compared to regular bikes, attributed to the electric motor.

La Rochelle to Bordeaux Cycling Holiday

  • Bike & hotel

Follow the Velodyssey Cycle Path from La Rochelle through the Charente Maritime, discovering idyllic islands, wide sandy beaches marshes, oyster farms and famous vineyards. Then cycle beside the Gironde Estuary into the Bordelais wine region, finishing your journey in the beautiful and vibrant city of Bordeaux.

If you like a diverse cycling holiday with a bit of everything then this lovely route from La Rochelle to Bordeaux will make an excellent choice. From La Rochelle you’ll enjoy a circular ride around the sand dunes, pine forests and exquisite villages of the sublime Ile de Ré, a small island, just offshore that could have been made with leisure cycling in mind.

La Rochelle to Bordeaux Cycling Holiday

You then follow a cycle path south along the the Atlantic coast, passing through charming little ports and villages along the way. Stunning beaches are never far away on the first 4 days of this route so it’s a good idea to pack your swim things in the pannier in case you fancy a dip. The historic naval base at Rochefort, with it’s fascinating rope-works museum, makes for an interesting break and sea-food lovers will surely relish the overnight stay in Marennes, a town famous for its oyster farms.

The route then follows the wide Gironde estuary into wine country. Cognac can only be called Cognac if it is produced here using the double-distilled method and a little further on you’ll find yourself in the Cotes du Blaye and Premier Cotes du Blaye region. A patchwork of neat vineyards covers the undulating countryside, interrupted only by gorgeous limestone villages and ornate chateaux.

Finally, you cross the estuary to the celebrated Haut Médoc wine region and follow the cycle path into the centre of bustling and vibrant Bordeaux.

This is a leisurely route that can be enjoyed by anyone with an average level of fitness. Much of it is cycle path with the remainder on quiet country lanes.

Click to show map | Flexitreks

After checking into your hotel, the rest of day is yours to discover the delightful port town of La Rochelle. The grand facades and whimsical turrets of the old limestone buildings in the historical centre create a unique atmosphere and a stroll around the narrow, winding streets is definitely time well-spent. If the weather is warm, you may be tempted to stroll out to the town beach for a swim and in the evening the bars and restaurants clustered around the Vieux Port draw tourists and locals alike.

Today’s ride leads you on a gentle loop around the island of Ré. After crossing the 3km bridge from the mainland on a dedicated cycle path you enter a world of quaint, ocean-side villages, sandy beaches, oyster beds and salt marshes. It’s easy to shorten the route if you like, so take your time and stop whenever the mood grabs you. At the end of the day you’ll return to La Rochelle for a second night.

Today you bid La Rochelle ‘adieu’ and head south along the coast. Easy pedalling on quiet roads and cycle paths leads you past pleasant coastal towns such as Chatelaillon and Fouras – both of which have lovely sandy beaches if you fancy a swim. After Fouras, the route heads inland to the garrison town of Rochefort on the Charente River. Originally built around a naval base and dockyard the town has a distinctly nautical flavour, even though it is some 10 kms from the open ocean. We highly recommend a visit to the fascinating Royal Ropeworks Museum on the banks of the Charente and you can hardly miss the imposing Transporter Bridge built in 1900. A few more kilometres of enjoyable riding through open countryside delivers you to the pleasant town of Marennes, famous for it’s oyster farms and your home for the night.

Shortly after leaving Marennes you cross a bridge and enter the forest of Coubra, over 5000 hectares of pine and holly oak trees. You’ll enjoy the pine scented air and dappled sunlight accompanying your ride south along the quiet cycle lane. If you fancy some beach time just take any of the right turns that punctuate the forest cycle path and after a few hundred meters you’ll arrive at the pristine white sand beach. You can also ascend the lighthouse at the southern end of the forest for some amazing views before cycling on along the coast to Royan, your overnight stop. The town has a lively waterfront and popular covered market.

Cycling out of Royan along the Boulevard Garnier you can admire the town’s beautiful beach and the stunning 19th century villas that have enjoyed this fabulous ocean view for centuries. A little furher on the route unveils some wonderful views across the wide and mighty Gironde Estuary. Stop in the tiny village of Talmont sur Gironde, perched on a rocky outcrop above the estuary, to admire the Romanesque church and colourful hollyhock displays. In Meshers sur Gironde the artisan cave dwellings, dug into the limestone cliffs, are worthy of a quick break before you carry on to your overnight stop in the charming village of Mortagne sur Gironde.

Evening meal included tonight

Today’s route leads you along the estuary on a nice cycle path to Vitrezay. We suggest a visit to the bird sanctuary before continuing on the beautiful cycle path to Blaye. Once at Blaye you can’t miss the impressive Citadel fortification, built by Vauban to stand guard over the estuary. You’ll spend the night in the pleasant little town.

After breakfast you cross the estuary aboard a ferry and alight in the celebrated Haut Médoc wine region. Nearby you will find the famous Margaux vineyard. The route wends its way south, never straying too far from the estuary bank. You’ll pass through small wine villages, and seas of vineyards contained by traditional limestone walls. Eventually the rural countryside gives way to Bordelais suburbs and you follow the riverside cycle path right into the centre of Bordeaux past the impressive new vertical lift bridge.

There is so much to see here – and it’s difficult to list everything – but the historic stone bridge and the Place de la Bourse with its amazing water mirror are must sees as is Bordeaux’s newest attraction – La Cité du Vin , a permanent and very well done exhibition about the world’s wines. Finally, be sure to take a casual stroll or cycle through the labyrinth of narrow winding streets brimming with inviting little cafes, boutiques and restaurants. A night in Bordeaux is a fitting finale to this wonderful cycling holiday.

After breakfast it’s time to head for home or your next adventure.

On this tour you can choose between a regular touring bike, a gravel bike or an e-bike.

The regular touring bike is an alloy framed model with 21 speeds and a comfortable, relaxed riding position, perfect for a leisure cycling holiday. These bikes come equipped with handlebar bag, rear panniers, lock and a repair kit with pump.

Keen cyclists may be tempted to opt for a gravel bike instead. The rugged, lightweight frame and drop handlebars offers a more dynamic riding position and the wider tyres are capable of handling both asphalt and gravel trails. These hi-spec, 22. speed bikes come equipped with handlebar bag, rear seat-post bag (instead of panniers), lock and a repair kit with pump.

E-bikes are a popular option on this route and ensure riders can enjoy the scenery along the way whilst not working too hard at the climbs. These bikes come equipped with handlebar bag, rear panniers, lock and a repair kit with pump.

Helmets are not provided, so you will need to bring your own.

Incredible Trip

From spectacular coastline to fields of sunflowers to rolling vineyards, this tour offers a "nature bath" that ignites all the senses. Add to that, beautiful overnight towns, historic hotels and incredible food and wine - what's not to love! This was our second bicycle trip in France (the first was in the equally incredible Loire Valley) and it will certainly not be our last. The distances were just right (the shorter but hillier day was actually the toughest), the bikes were terrific, as was the Roadbook for Discovery AP that served as our guide. Our bags were waiting for us at every overnight town and the entire trip was seamless. We traveled in late June / early July and there were surprisingly few tourists in the towns we visited. Restaurants and sight seeing activities were therefore easily accessible, requiring no advance reservations. We added a couple of nights in La Rochelle pre-trip and in Bordeaux post, which we would highly recommend, we actually wished we'd had more time in Bordeaux - a spectacular city with lot's to see and do .... and eat and drink. Bon voyage!

1) given that we are trying to have a holiday & enjoy these areas, how should we best divide our time? Two nights in each of La Rochelle & Bordeaux or 1 & 3 (ie 3 in Bordeaux) OR shall we skip La Rochelle altogether & just enjoy 4 glorious, relaxing nights in Bordeaux?

2) re the hire car which we'll have driven from Bayeux to Tours - shall we catch to train from Tours or keep the car & drive ourselves? Is a car really necessary in Bordeaux?

FYI, after Bordeaux, we plan to catch a train to Toulouse & onto Carcassonne for Bastille Day. We are undecided whether to spend a night in Toulouse also. We are absolutely torn between trying to "see it all" or just really enjoying fewer places & slowing down our pace thus having a holiday at the same time. We don't mind driving, but we do find trying to drive into & out of big cities & finding our accommodation quite stressful, hence my query about the train.

tours from la rochelle to bordeaux

As to "seeing it all," versus more in-depth visits to fewer locales, I urge you to consider the latter. Over the past 8 years, we've done 4 fly-drive trips in France , most recently this past spring. My main regret about our most recent trip is that we tried to cover too many places, never spending more than 3 days in any one. Other trips where we've taken a more relaxed pace and visited fewer places over more days were more satisfying.

And in La Rochelle, you can drink "Bordeaux" ! The number of cafés and restaurants is phenomenal.

After it also depends on what you are planning to visit beside the city.

I agree with Bernard....my preference is for La Rochelle. Its a lovely place and there are plenty of day trip opportunities.

Being by the sea brings a lot of charm to La Rochelle. Especially the old port and the streets in the area around

Are you planning day trips around ?

From La Rochelle you have both île de Ré, d'Oléron or Aix. Saintes. Brouage. Esnandes. Vouvant. Royan, Talmont sur Gironde and the Gironde estuary. You also have Cognac not that far.

http://www.france-atlantic.com/

Around Bordeaux , you have the vineyards of course but also Arcachon and the area around it with the Sand Dune of Pyla. At the beginning of the Gironde estuary the Town of Blaye and it's fortress. Bourg. South of Bordeaux small villages like Rions, Cadillac, Verdelais are not must sees but nice to pass by if it's on your route.

A great village to see in my opinion would be St-Emilion.

http://www.gironde-tourisme.fr/

http://www.bassin-arcachon.com/en

No matter where you will stay, there will always be things to see and discover and never enough time ;-)

Good luck with your planning !

As plannerHaolic says: <<No matter where you will stay, there will always be things to see and discover and never enough time ;-)>>

Everyone will have their own ideas of "best" places to see and the worst thing is for you to come back feeling you have missed out on something. Just accept that you cannot see/do it all. We all feel that way. Despite how many times we visit France there is always somewhere else to explore.

Don't worry too much about seeing everything that is recommended. Just enjoy your personalised trip and you will be rewarded with over a thousand memories (one for each of the people living in your small town!)
