The Intriguing World Of Entertainment

Whatever Happened To Jennifer Hetrick, ‘Vash’ From Star Trek: The Next Generation?

By Nick Lee | September 6, 2023

Jennifer Hetrick Vash On Star Trek

In the vast cosmos of the Star Trek universe, many characters have come and gone, leaving indelible marks on the hearts of Trekkies worldwide.

Among these iconic figures stands Vash, portrayed by the talented Jennifer Hetrick. With her fiery spirit and adventurous nature, Vash quickly became a fan favorite, especially for her intriguing relationship with Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

But as the years have passed, one question lingers in the minds of many: Whatever happened to Jennifer Hetrick after her Star Trek days?

Join us as we embark on a journey through time and space, unraveling the mysteries surrounding the life and career of this beloved actress.

Acting Career

Squeeze play.

Jennifer Hetrick - Squeeze Play

Hetrick’s first film role marked the beginning of her acting career with 1979’s Squeeze Play!, a comedy directed by Lloyd Kaufman. The story revolves around a group of women who, after becoming frustrated with their boyfriends who prioritize sports over romance, decide to create a softball team of their own and challenge them to a game.

The film received universally negative reviews.

Jennifer Hetrick Unsub

In 1989, Hetrick landed a main cast role on NBC’s crime drama Unsub, a portmanteau of “unknown” and “subject.” She played Ann Madison, member of an elite FBI forensic team, for all 8 episodes of the show’s run. It was unfortunately canceled after only one season.

Following her stint on Unsub, Hetrick continued on to feature as a recurring character on NBC’s legal drama L.A. Law between 1989 and 1991. Her character, Corinne Hammond Becker, appeared in 14 episodes during a storyline that involved a divorce proceeding, and she disappeared after the plot concluded.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Vash Star Trek

In 1990, Hetrick would play Vash, a human archeologist known for shady business dealings and selling of priceless artifacts for profit, on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picard is initially unaware of her duplicitous nature during Vash’s premiere episode, “Captain’s Holiday”, and so the two enjoy a romance while Vash simultaneously uses Picard to push her own hidden agenda.

Vash Star Trek

Although the two part ways, they meet again in 1991 episode “Qpid” when the seemingly omnipotent alien entity Q places them in a Robinhood fantasy together. Q then tasks a Robinhood-donned Picard to rescue Vash’s Maid Marien before she faces certain doom.

When Picard succeeds in his rescue, the two rekindle their romance once more before Vash chooses to join Q in his travels through the universe. This is the last we see of Vash on The Next Generation.

Fans generally did not care for Vash’s character and felt Picard, a self-identified morally upright man, should have comported himself with more dignity than to fall for the wiles of a charmer and thief. However, Hetrick was kindling a real-life romance with Picard actor Patrick Stewart, and the two were engaged at the time “Qpid” was filmed.

Just as with Picard and Vash, Hetrick and Stewart parted ways before long. The engagement did not conclude in a marriage.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Vash Star Trek Deep Space Nine

In 1993, Hetrick made an appearance in season one of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, reprising her role as Vash. The episode brings Vash aboard the titular space station to reveal that her partnership with Q has dissolved. However, Q appears before long in an attempt to woo her back.

What ensues is a competition for Vash’s attention between Q, Dr. Bashir, and Quark. Whereas Q and Bashir wish for the pleasure of her company, Quark recognizes her undeniable charm and proficiency for selling priceless goods.

At the end of the episode, Quark convinces Vash to continue with her business using Quark as a partner and financial backer for her operation. Vash agrees to the terms, but is never seen on-screen again.

Bodies of Evidence

Between 1992 and 1993, Hetrick portrayed Bonnie Caroll, wife of main character Lieutenant Ben Carroll, on the CBS police drama series Bodies of Evidence alongside Lee Horsely, George Clooney, and Kate McNeil.

Hetrick appeared on 4 of the series’ 16 total episodes. It was canceled after two seasons.

The X-Files

Jennifer Hetrick - x-files

In 1996, Hetrick appeared on an episode of The X-Files as Sharon Skinner, wife of assistant FBI director Walter Skinner, in an episode entitled “Avatar”. During the episode, she serves Walter with divorce papers leading to him having a one night stand with a stranger. When the stranger winds up dead in the morning, Scully and Mulder investigate the unusual circumstances.

Hetrick appears in various scenes in the episode. While her character survives the episode, including a car crash that lands her in a coma, she is never seen on the show again.

In 1995, Hetrick played Caroline Fontaine on an episode of Sliders called “Last Days”. Hetrick would appear on the show once more in 2000, but as a separate character entirely. Her second appearance was as Claire LeBeau in an episode entitled “The Seer”.

Other TV Appearances

Hetrick went on to appear on numerous TV shows including Alias, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Cold Case, Prison Break, 24, and Raising the Bar.

What is Jennifer Hetrick doing now?

Jennifer Hetrick now

Jennifer Hetrick remains an actress, although her last appearance was in 2018 on an episode of CBS medical drama Code Black. Hetrick has returned to filming TV commercials as well, including a 2018 ad for Prolia alongside Blythe Danner.

In recent years, Hetrick has taken a step back from mainstream Hollywood, focusing on smaller projects and personal pursuits. She’s been involved in community theater and has also explored other artistic avenues, including writing.

Relationships and Family Life

While Jennifer Hetrick’s romance with actor Patrick Stewart fizzled before tying the knot, Hetrick went on and married someone else. However, she has not shared details of her husband, including his name or occupation.

The two have one child– a daughter named Lilly.

Every Jean-Luc Picard Star Trek Love Interest

10 star trek female characters that made tng better, recasting star trek: the next generation for a movie reboot.

  • Vash, an archaeologist with a shady past, stirred intrigue with Captain Picard and reappeared on Deep Space Nine.
  • Actress Jennifer Hetrick, who played Vash, had a real-life romance with Patrick Stewart.
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks introduced its own version of Vash in archaeologist Petra Aberdeen.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) had a few love interests throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation , but Jennifer Hetrick's Vash was one of the most memorable. Unlike Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Picard did not regularly go on away missions, and he certainly did not regularly romance alien women. Picard spent much of his free time aboard the USS Enterprise-D, reading his favorite books and sipping Earl Grey tea. For the most part, Jean-Luc kept his friends at arm's length, and he allowed very few people into his heart.

Captain Picard's most captivating love story in Star Trek: The Next Generation was not quite a true romance, but involved a will they/won't they dynamic with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). One of Jean-Luc's most significant romances aside from Beverly begins in TNG season 3, episode 19, "Captain's Holiday," while Picard is enjoying a much-needed vacation on the "pleasure planet" Risa . Soon after arriving on Risa, Picard encounters Vash, who greets him with a kiss despite the fact that the two have never met. Picard then gets caught up in an archeological adventure with Vash and the two begin a brief romance.

Jean-Luc Picard may have avoided love until Picard season 2, but he had no shortage of potential partners during his time aboard the Enterprise.

Who Was Vash In Star Trek: TNG?

Vash also made one appearance on star trek: deep space nine, in ds9 season 1, episode 7, "q-less.".

Although Vash had once been a legitimate member of the Federation Archaeology Council, she was most interested in making a profit from selling the ancient artifacts she found (or stole). Because of her illicit activities and questionable ethics, Vash was banned from several planets and had her membership to the Daystrom Institute Archaeological Council suspended twice. After Vash and Picard reconnected in TNG season 4, episode 20, "Qpid," Vash left with Q (John de Lancie) to explore more of the universe. Vash later appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , where she found a kindred spirit in the Ferengi bartender, Quark (Armin Shimerman) .

In her initial encounter with Captain Picard, Vash not only used Jean-Luc as a means to distract the Ferengi, Sovak (Max Grodenchik), but she also lied to him about the artifact she was searching for on Risa.

Jennifer Hetrick has appeared in many television episodes over the years, including Beverly Hills 90210, Sliders, Alias, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Cold Case, and Prison Break . She portrayed Arnie Becker's ex-wife Corrinne Hammond on L.A. Law , as well as Walter Skinner's wife, Sharon Skinner, in one episode of The X-Files . Hetrick appeared in the films No Regrets , A Poor Kid's Guide to Success , and had an uncredited role in 500 Days of Summer . Her most recent role was as Mrs. Berlinger in an episode of the CBS medical drama Code Black .

Patrick Stewart & Vash Actress Jennifer Hetrick Dated In Real Life

Stewart and hetrick dated on and off while filming star trek: the next generation..

In his autobiography, Making It So: A Memoir, Patrick Stewart opened up about some of his past relationships, including one with Jennifer Hetrick. The two had an affair during the filming of Star Trek: The Next Generation , which resulted in the breakdown of Stewart's marriage with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. Stewart does not go into much detail about his romance with Hetrick, but he does open up about his struggle of going through his first divorce.

Patrick Stewart and Jennifer Hetrick dated throughout parts of Star Trek: The Next Generation's run and were reportedly engaged during the filming of "Qpid," although they never married.

Patrick Stewart and Jennifer Hetrick dated throughout parts of Star Trek: The Next Generation's run and were reportedly engaged during the filming of "Qpid," although they never married. Stewart was then married to Wendy Neuss from 2000 to 2003, before marrying his current wife Sunny Ozell in 2013 . Hetrick later married as well, although she has kept her relationship very private.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Had Their Own Vash

Petra aberdeen is a member of the independent archaeologists guild..

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 5, "Reflections," introduced a character very similar to Star Trek: The Next Generation's Vash. Like Vash, Petra Aberdeen (Georgia King) was an archeologist who played by her own rules. Although Petra had previously been serving aboard the USS Victory, she left Starfleet to become an independent archeologist. While running a recruitment booth for the Independent Archaeologists Guild, Petra met Ensigns Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) , who were manning a Starfleet booth. Petra's true reason for being at the recruitment fair was to steal the Grand Nagus' staff from the nearby Museum of Antiquities and return it to the Ferengi.

Many of Petra's missions to retrieve and return previously stolen artifacts were sponsored by none other than Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, as revealed in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 10, "The Stars At Night."

After Mariner was transferred to Starbase 80 as punishment for something she didn't do, she joined Petra aboard her ship, the Free Spirit. When Mariner learned about the dangerous malfunction of the AI within the Texas-class automated starships, she convinced Petra to come to the aid of the USS Cerritos. The Free Spirit then rallied all of the California-class starships to form an armada against the rogue Texas-class ships. Mariner then returned to Starfleet and her position on the Cerritos. Petra Aberdeen was a fascinating character who will hopefully return, and she would likely not have existed if not for Star Trek: The Next Generation's Vash.

Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , & Star Trek: Lower Decks are available to stream on Paramount+.

Recap: Star Trek: Picard — Broken Pieces

More secrets are revealed in this action-packed episode

Star Trek: Picard

StarTrek.com

At the beginning of Star Trek: Picard ’s eighth episode, we finally learn the truth behind the Zhat Vash — the truth that, if you learn it, could destroy your mind. The opening scene of the episode takes us to a sort of initiation ritual for the super secret Romulan organization. Commodore Oh fills the candidates on on the backstory: An advanced ancient civilization preserved its memory in a system with eight stars on a planet called Aia.

Over the course of the episode, we learn that this unnamed race left a warning that there was a line of demarcation for advanced artificial life. Once a people crossed it, someone or something would show up to end them — which is what happened to this race. The Zhat Vash took this warning so seriously that it became their central mission: to eliminate any artificial beings, and the will to create them, before they reached that point.

The initiation itself is fascinating, in that both Narissa and Ramdha (apparently Narissa’s aunt) are present. Of all the initiates, only Narissa is left standing — proving her worthiness to join the organization. Ramdha is still alive (unlike many of the others) but her mind is clearly affected. The implication here is that Ramdha was the reason that the Borg cube separated from the Collective after her assimilation.

Star Trek: Picard

On the Borg cube, Elnor is hiding out, waiting for rescue, and it arrives just in time, in the style you’d expect from Seven of Nine. Her casual, “Where’s Hugh?” is painful on multiple levels, as it reminds us of the fate of our one of our favorite ex-Borg, but also makes it clear that there’s backstory there we will likely never get to see (except perhaps in a book or comic). The hug Elnor gives Seven is absolutely perfect.

Seven begins regenerating the Borg cube and creates an entirely new collective among the local Borg — with herself as queen. There are so many interesting discussions to be had here, from the ethics of using drones this way, knowing that they can be reclaimed as individuals, to Seven’s statement that she might not want to release them once she’s finished (what has she learned since the end of Voyager ?) But Seven recognizes she has no choice in the matter if she wants to take back the cube — and she does in a very cool scene (that does not in any way require her to remove any clothing, thankfully). Narissa responds by murdering the drones in stasis. The ex-Borg overwhelm her, but she once again escapes. In the end, Seven takes the cube back and is able to disconnect from this new Collective she’s created.

From the second he sees Soji, Ríos begins acting very strangely. It quickly becomes clear that Dahj and Soji weren’t the first of Data’s daughters, and that he’s come across one of their previous incarnations — Giana, in this case. Raffi spends the bulk of the episode piecing together Ríos’s relationship with her, as well as the truth behind the synth attack on Mars: The Conclave of Eight isn’t a secret organization, it’s the name of the system where the Zhat Vash holds their initiation rites and where the warning is located.

Star Trek: Picard

The crew of La Sirena have learned of Agnes’s treachery, and as a result they begin to distrust Soji. They are jumping to conclusions, to be sure, and playing into the fear and mistrust of artificial life that pervades Starfleet. But their point is a sound one: Picard doesn’t know Soji’s capabilities, and if she were to turn against them the results would be catastrophic.

If anything, “Broken Pieces” makes it incredibly clear how singular Data was, and how destructive he potentially could have been (see also, his brother Lore). If you’re curious about Data’s lineage, especially his creator Noonien Soong, check out The Next Generation episodes “Datalore,” “Brothers,” and “Inheritance.”

Dr. Jurati finally awakens and she admits to murdering Bruce Maddox while also filling in some of the blanks of the Zhat Vash’s mission. Now that she can be honest about what she’s done, and the things she’s seen, it seems as though Agnes is on a slow road to redemption, especially with her promise to Soji. Let’s hope she can make up for what she’s done, and that this can be the best of found families.

In the end, Raffi manages to get through to Ríos: His old captain, the man he admired, turned out to be a murderer. Starfleet (or more specifically, Commodore Oh) ordered him to kill two synths, a brother and a sister (who looked exactly like Soji), or risk the Ibn Majid being destroyed. He complied and then —because he couldn’t live with what he’d done— killed himself, leaving a traumatised Ríos to cover it up.

Star Trek: Picard

Raffi also gathers the crew’s disparate pieces of information and is finally able to convince everyone —including Jean-Luc— that Oh (who is apparently half-Romulan, half-Vulcan, explaining how she could be a member of the Zhat Vash but also initiate a mind meld) and the Romulans were behind the synth attack on Mars. The bottom line was that protecting the galaxy from artificial life, and its consequences, was more important than saving their own people from a supernova.

When Jean-Luc mentioned that he wanted a subspace link to Starfleet, my stomach dropped — after all, his last meeting with them didn’t exactly go smoothly. But it turns out that Clancy is on Jean-Luc’s side, and he gets the fleet he wanted. It’s time to go save the androids! However, Soji has her own plans (she’s now been fully activated, including her memories), which don’t involve waiting for Starfleet’s task force. Instead, she’s ready to go home. And that’s just where La Sirena is taking her — with Narek hot on their tail.

Quotes

Vash : That's the problem with being such a well-known liar. Even when I'm telling the truth, no one believes me.

Servant : Oh, you'll wear yourself out with all that pacing, milady.

Vash : Told you to stop calling me that. The name's Vash.

Servant : Ooh, my poor lamb. You've got a brain sickness for sure. Oh, can't I get you something to ease your suffering?

Vash : I could use a drink.

Servant : Well, I wasn't thinking of spirits, milady, but I have some nice, fresh leeches - to drain the fever.

[Picard enters his quarters, where a surprise visitor is waiting for him]

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Vash! How did you get in here?

Vash : I came in through the window.

Vash : *You're* Q!

Q : Yes. And you are a very interesting woman.

[with the help of his men, Picard has rescued "Lady Marian"]

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : If you have hurt any of my people...

Q : Sadly enough, they're all fine, but my point is, they could've been killed - and so might've you - all for the love of a maid. My debt to you, Picard, is paid. If you've learned how weak and vulnerable you really are, if you finally see how love has brought out the worst in you.

Vash : Nonsense! You're absolutely wrong. It's brought out the best in him. His nobility, courage, self-sacrifice, tenderness.

Q : Oh, you're good. You're really good.

Vash : [of Q]  He was right about one thing, you know. As ridiculous as it was, his game did prove that you still care.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I may not show my feelings to my crew; but I do have them.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : So, where are you off to now?

Vash : I haven't made up my mind.

[Q appears next to them]

Q : After all, she has the entire universe to choose from.

Vash : Meet my new partner.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Him?

Vash : Why not?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I'll tell you why not!

Q : Now, Jean-Luc, let's not be unkind.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : He's devious, and amoral, and unreliable, and irresponsible, and... and definitely not to be trusted!

Vash : Remind you of someone you know?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : As a matter of fact, it does.

[Picard, as Robin Hood, has come through the window of the castle to rescue Vash, as Lady Marian]

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : My staff and I were brought here by an old adversary of mine named Q, but I'll tell you the rest of that when we're safe. Come on, we don't have much time.

Vash : And the others are outside?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : They're waiting for us back in Sherwood Forest.

Vash : You... you mean you came here alone?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : That's right. Now come on!

Vash : What kind of plan is that?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : It's an excellent one if you'd just hurry up!

Vash : You do realize that our lives are at stake here?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Only too well.

Vash : And this is the best strategy you could come up with, one man against an entire castle?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : You have a better one?

Vash : How about this: you go, I'll stay here.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : And do what?

Vash : Marry Sir Guy, if I have to.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : Well, that's brilliant!

Vash : You must be Commander Riker.

Commander William T. Riker : I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage.

Vash : I didn't mean to interrupt. I believe you were about to tell me that my eyes are as mysterious as the stars.

Commander William T. Riker : You're Betazoid.

Vash : Not at all. It's just that Jean-Luc does a very good imitation of you.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : A captain does not reveal his personal feelings to his crew.

Vash : Is that a Starfleet regulation or did you just make that up yourself?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard : I'm sorry if you're upset.

Vash : And I'm sorry if my being here embarrasses you.

Q : Well, are you going to kiss her goodbye?

[Picard and Vash just look at him]

Q : All right.

[Q disappears]

Vash : Well, aren't you?

Q : [Picard and Vash are about to kiss when Q reappears]  Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot my hat.

[Q disappears again and Picard and Vash kiss]

[last lines]

Vash : Goodbye, Jean-Luc.

Biography [ ]

Vash was an archaeologist who worked with Doctor Samuel Estragon at the Daystrom Institute Archaeological Council studying the Tox Uthat . Upon Estragon's death in 2366 , Vash defrauded Sovak in order to travel to Risa and search for the Tox Uthat .

While on Risa, Vash would encounter Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise -D while he was attempting to vacation. Vash initially used Picard as a way to hide from Sovak and later used Picard to help her hide the fact that she had already discovered the Tox Uthat . Picard discovered her deception and destroyed the artifact. During their partnership, Vash and Picard developed romantic feelings for each other. ( TNG episode : " Captain's Holiday ")

Across her career, Vash used similarly disreputable tactics numerous times. This led to Vash twice being suspended from the Daystrom Institute Archaeological Council, banned from the Royal Museum of Epsilon Hydra VII , declared persona non grata on Betazed . ( TNG episode : " Qpid ", DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

Later, in the year 2367 , Vash would appear at a meeting of the Federation Archaeological Council aboard the Enterprise -D at which Captain Picard was to be the guest speaker. This led to a somewhat warm reunion between Vash and Picard, though she was saddened that Picard never mentioned her to his crew.

Q would appear during this time and offered to do something nice for Picard. Picard refused and Q eventually forced the Enterprise -D's crew into a Robin Hood scenario. In the scenario, Picard was forced to choose between rescuing Vash (playing Maid Marian ) or letting her die. Picard rescued Vash.

Following the incident, Q became fascinated with Vash and would ask her to travel with him. Picard advised against this, but Vash went with Q anyway. ( TNG episode : " Qpid ")

Vash would spend the next two years travelling with Q, aquiring artifacts and visiting numerous Gamma Quadrant locations including Errikand VII , Brax , and Errabus Prime . ( DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

In 2369 , Vash encountered the Even Odds , distracting Zin Dezavrim and stealing a valuable knife Facity Sleedow had retrieved. ( DS9 novel : Rising Son )

Later in 2369, Vash ended her partnership with Q and was discovered by Jadzia Dax . Dax returned Vash To Deep Space 9 , where Vash almost immediately partnered with Quark to auction off valuables she had brought from the Gamma Quadrant.

Eventually it was discovered that one of her artifacts was interfering with the operation of the space station and the artifact was removed. Vash would later turn down offers to re-partner with Q and to return to the Daystrom Institute . Instead, Vash was convinced to continue her search for valuable artifacts with Quark as her backer. ( DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

In 2372 , a Changeling infiltrator boarded the USS Enterprise -E and studied Picard's personal logs . The infiltrator then used this information during negotiations to state it could assume the form of any of Picard's female acquaintances, including Vash. ( TNG eBook : A Sea of Troubles )

Q would later appear to Vash several more times between 2369 and 2374 . ( DS9 novel : The Fall of Terok Nor )

In 2377 , Vash was captured by the Borg and assimilated , becoming a Borg Queen . Two weeks later, she was rescued by Q and restored to normal with no memory of what had happened. ( VOY short story : " Iridium-7-Tetrahydroxate Crystals Are a Girl's Best Friend ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

Vash later became known as the Bajoran writer Eilin after she, Picard and Nog were transported back in time from the year 2400 aboard the USS Phoenix . ( DS9 novels : The War of the Prophets , Inferno )

Vash

Vash was a human archaeologist , thief, profiteer and former member of the Federation Archaeology Council in the 24th century . During the 2360s , she had an on-again/off-again romance with Jean-Luc Picard whom she met on Risa while searching for the Tox Uthat . She later formed a partnership with Q , exploring the Gamma Quadrant with him until 2369 . ( TNG : " Captain's Holiday ", " Q-Pid "; DS9 : " Q-Less ")

Early life and career [ ]

Little is known of Vash's background, except that she was born sometime in the early 2330s , and, abandoned by her mother, lived on the streets of an (unidentified) "backwater cesspool of a planet."

Her hard life taught her to be exceptionally resourceful, and she escaped her birth world by stowing away aboard a transport bound for the Rigel system . In her early teens, she was a pickpocket and petty thief, wanted by local constabularies from Rigel IV to Wrigley's Pleasure Planet .

According to a story she once related to Timothy Sinclair , when she was 14 she stole an antique pocketwatch from a man she later learned to be Doctor Carter Nelson , a professor of archaeology at the Daystrom Institute . When Nelson posted a reward for the item that was ten times as much as she could get from a fence, she returned it, surprised that Nelson recognized her as the thief. Vash was even more surprised when, instead of turning her in to the authorities, Nelson bought her a hot meal and gave her a job as his field assistant.

Working with Dr. Nelson, Vash came to appreciate the value of ancient things, though she viewed it in a much more monetary sense than her employer. She nonetheless studied at the Daystrom Institute under Nelson and his colleagues. Vash proved to be an excellent student and left with a master's degree in xenoarchaeology in 2354 . ( Star Trek: Pendragon : "Past Watchful Dragons", et. al)

But Vash's primary goal was not to gain knowledge about ancient cultures, but to sell their artifacts for a profit. To this end she frequently used methods that were considered unscrupulous by the scientific community, including visiting many archaeological sites that were barred to outsiders, such as Sarthong V . ( TNG : " Captain's Holiday ")

Following her "visit" to Sarthong in 2355 , Vash set out for the Great Rift region between the Sagittarius and Orion arms of the galaxy, where many ancient, long-abandoned worlds lay waiting to be explored, and perhaps, exploited. She spent over a year investigating various worlds in the region, and made some "amazing" discoveries. ( Star Trek: Pendragon )

Vash and Timothy Sinclair

In early 2357 , Vash was a passenger Lalairu vessel. On the journey she met a young man named Timothy Sinclair , who was another guest of the Lalairu. Vash was the first human he had seen in over six months, and as the only humans aboard, they spent much time together. Intrigued by each other, their mutual passion for archaeology turned into a different type of passion altogether, which years later, Vash would remember with fondness, while Sinclair would call it "the second biggest mistake" of his life.

After departing the Lalairu, Vash and Sinclair continued to travel together, forming a partnership that lasted for six months. Half that time was spent among the ancient outposts of the former Tkon Empire . Their partnership dissolved when Sinclair realized that Vash was just using him, and took off for the galactic rim . ( Star Trek: Pendragon )

Vash eventually returned to Federation space, and went back to the Daystrom Institute . From 2361 until his death, Vash assisted Dr. Samuel Estragon in his search for the Tox Uthat . She ultimately found the device on Risa , with the help of Jean-Luc Picard . ( TNG : " Captain's Holiday ")

Because of her "questionable" ethics - Picard considered her "amoral" - Vash was twice removed from the Federation Archaeological Council . She was also persona non grata on a number of worlds, including Epsilon Hydra VII and Betazed . She even had a "dead or alive" warrant on her head on Myrmidon , where she had stolen the Crown of the First Mother . After an incident on Deep Space 9 , she was offered both reinstatement to the Council and a teaching post at the Daystrom Institute , but her adventurous, profiteering nature caused her to turn them down. ( TNG : " QPid "; DS9 : " Q-Less ")

Pendragon timeline [ ]

After the Federation Civil War , Vash met up with Sinclair again while they were both investigating potential Iconian outposts. Despite Sinclair's objections, she "tagged along" on some of his expeditions, and became acquainted with his sons, Jeff and Tyler . ( PDN : "Air and Darkness")

Vash encountered the Sinclairs on many occasions throughout the 2380s , most notably in 2385 , when she and Tim worked with a team of archaeologists on Mintaka III , eventually leading to the discovery of the Tkon " Starkindler " artifact. ( PDN : "Moments of Revelation", "Another Time, Another Place", "Starkindler")

A few months later, Vash formed a new partnership of sorts with Nick Locarno . ( Star Trek: Sons of Liberty : "Freelancers")

Background [ ]

  • Vash was named after Susan Vash, a casting director who Ira Steven Behr worked with on the television series Once a Hero . Her name was changed into Viriad in the French version, because Vash sounds like the french word vache , which means "cow" in English.
  • Vash is one of only two serious romances that engage Captain Picard through the course of The Next Generation , the other being with Nella Daren .

10 PERFECT Scenes In Hated Star Trek Episodes

Admit it, you love these Star Trek scenes, even if the episodes or movies weren't all that

Star Trek Picard Stands In The Romulan Senate Nemesis

As fans, we often find ourselves at loggerheads when it comes to what does and doesn't count as brilliance in Star Trek.  So much of the franchise is up to the individual's taste - though admittedly some scenes are just perfect, whatever way one looks at it. The entirety of Spock's Brain  is camp perfection.

There are then fierce debates over the episodes and movies that aren't 'stunning', though almost every iteration has its defenders. We admit that episode from The Next Generation  may not have many fans, but even there, isn't it nice to have something to unify over?

This list comprises those scenes that, though they may be in episodes or films that have fewer fans than most, still manage to rise above the content surrounding it. They may be excellent examples of those scenes that prove, no matter how great they are, the whole cannot submit just one of the sum of its parts. Nor, too, should these parts be forgotten. For every Wrath Of Khan, there may be a Nemesis , but for every 'Brain? Brain? What is Brain?' there may also be an 'I Need My Pain!'

10. I'm Not Picard - Q, Less

Star Trek Picard Stands In The Romulan Senate Nemesis

How does the meme go? When Q arrived on the Enterprise, Picard quoted Shakespeare at him, and couldn’t get rid of him on a bet. When Q arrived on Deep Space Nine, Sisko punched him in the face.

Never dealt with him again. 10/10.

The inclusion of Q, much like the earlier inclusion of the Duras Sisters, in the first season of Deep Space Nine was a clear attempt at unifying the Star Trek universe. Though a completely understandable motive, the truth was that as fabulous as John De Lancie is, the character simply didn’t work within the world of the Prophets. It was cute having O’Brien recognise him straight away, but the joke wears off quickly.

The writers had the wherewithal to showcase the differences between Picard and Sisko early - proving that the latter was no slouch when it came to dealing with Demi-gods. Q may believe Sisko easier to provoke, but let him just be glad he’s not a Romulan senator. The entire plot line focusing on the auction in Quarks, featuring a returning Jennifer Hettrick as Vash, simply drags. The station’s going to be crushed by the wormhole, but no one seems to care.

The only true moment of life in the episode is that bout of boxing between the commander and the Q. It’s honestly funny, with the direction and camera angles leaning into the joke. Sisko’s advice/warning to Q - ‘I’m not Picard’ - rings perfectly through the scene’s end, making the slog of the episode worth the effort alone.

In the presentation, Eldrige showcases some of the decisions that went into making each prop replica, areas in which the company added some extra flair to areas not fully complete in the original prop production (like the tiny Type I inside the assault phaser), and collaboration with the Strange New Worlds production team to make that phaser even more accurate than what’s been seen in the series to date.

He also goes into detail about some of the manufacturing limitations that have resulted in a few controversial deviations from accuracy in the  Next Generation tricorder, including the screen dimensions, paint color, and why the device has an unusual raised power indicator.

Factory Entertainment’s medical tricorder replica is up for preorder now (and nearing a sellout, we’re told), while the  Star Trek V and  Strange New Worlds phasers will be announced for preorder in the coming months. The company also announced their Geordi La Forge VISOR replica over the weekend, also up for preorder.

The Zhat Vash was an ancient and secret Romulan cabal of Tal Shiar operatives . According to Laris , it was thousands upon thousands of years old, and it supposedly predated the Tal Shiar, which she said functioned merely as a mask for the Zhat Vash. Zhat vash was also a term sometimes used to refer to the dead , the "only reliable keepers of secrets". ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

Its sole purpose was claimed to be to keep a secret so profound and terrible that just learning it could break a person's mind. When she was a Tal Shiar recruit, Laris heard a drunk handler claim to her that the organization was motivated by hate, fear and pure unassuageable loathing for artificial intelligence , including androids , AIs, and other forms of synthetic life, which they attempted to seek out and destroy. ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

Allegedly, the Zhat Vash operated without regard for treaty or jurisdiction , not just on Romulan worlds, but also in the Klingon Empire , the Gorn Hegemony , and even the United Federation of Planets . ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

History [ ]

The Zhat Vash were formed hundreds of years before the 24th century , when a group of Romulans investigating the mystery of the Eightfold Stars discovered the Admonition on the planet Aia . After experiencing the memories of the utter devastation wrought by the synthetic "Destroyer", called Seb-Cheneb , contained within the Admonition, they dedicated themselves to eliminating synthetics so as to prevent another such event. Subsequent generations of Zhat Vash would also submit themselves to Admonition, so as to strengthen themselves for their task. ( PIC : " Broken Pieces ")

The story of the "Zhat Vash" was sometimes told to frighten Tal Shiar recruits, with its alleged motives known to very few; Zhaban was largely skeptical of their existence and equated it to stories of "boogeymen". In 2399 , former operative Laris related the rumors about the Zhat Vash to retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard ; they came to believe that the Zhat Vash were likely behind the attacks on Dahj Asha on Earth . ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

General Oh later led a warbird squadron to destroy the planet Coppelius ' population of synths, but encountered orchids and a fleet of Starfleet starships led by the USS Zheng He . During that battle, Narissa was killed in combat with Seven of Nine on the Artifact . Due to that event, the Federation came to believe that the Zhat Vash were likely behind the Attack on Mars and lifted the ban on the creation of artificial lifeforms.
