In this Baler Aurora Travel Guide, We will show you why this town is not just a Surfer’s Paradise; it’s also an ideal summer holiday destination for family and a group of friends.

There’s nothing modern or spectacular metropolis to see in Baler. Still, it’s a great way to get away from it all and enjoy some of the best things about the Philippines: great food, friendly people, a comfortable yet affordable lifestyle, and, of course, the beach.

Where to Eat in Baler

There are plenty of places to enjoy great Filipino food, but for my taste, you’ve got to hit a couple of spots. First, I recommend checking out Gerry’s Chinese and Seafood Restaurant. Fresh seafood on the coast? Of course.

Buffet Lunch at Gerry’s Chinese and Seafood Restaurant

Locals recommend it, and the prices are reasonable. If you’re looking for something up a level, check out Bahia de Baler. For something with a Western flair and a good place at the beach, Bay’s Inn has reasonable prices and a great location.

Planning your Trip to Baler

Once you’re in Baler, you’ll probably find many options that will pull you in many directions. If you’re a surfer, you’ll head to Sabang Beach. Near the beach are many surfboard rental places if you didn’t bring your board or want to try it out. Sabang is known to have a friendly touch for beginners.

Inside Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

I recommend the beach, but you should also travel inland and go for a freshwater swim at Culayan Falls near San Luis. Ditumabo Falls is a bit more dramatic, also near San Luis.

Mother Falls (photo by Chris Juloya)

Local history is fascinating and dates back to 1609, so check out Baler’s Museum, Ermita Hill, and give yourself a day to wander the Baler historical trail . The Baler Catholic Church has been renovated and is a nice excellent stop.

If you want to explore the rainforest to see wildlife and the beautiful canopy, you should do the Baler Adventure tour .

Best Things to Do and See in Baler

Diguisit anyaw islets.

Diguisit Anyaw Islets

Said to be a different experience between low and high tide changes; those who may have experienced going to the place during its low tide will be able to climb its rocky formations, which will have been a great experience. Otherwise, climbing can be challenging as some rocks are submerged in water. Luckily, our experience is of the former.

Diguisit Falls

Diguisit Falls

Right across the Diguisit beach area, you can find a trail to Diguisit Waterfalls. Just don’t visit it during summertime to avoid disappointment.

Balete Park in Maria Aurora

600 Years Old Balete Tree

This park is famous for its 600-year-old balete tree. Currently the largest tree of its kind in Asia, it would take 60 adults, holding one another at arms, to encircle its gigantic trunk.

Located at Barangay Zabali in Baler, the Tibag – Sabang hanging bridge is now gaining popularity among tourists who loves a little bit of adventure.

Church of Baler

Church of Baler

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Church is the Catholic Church of Baler and was recently renovated. It looks crisp and clean on the outside, painted a soft minty green, and is nicely painted and decorated on the inside with an elaborate altar.

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

If you’ve read my blog before, you know I’m into the heritage houses of past famous families of the Philippines. The drama surrounding the assassination of Dona Aurora and her daughter is well-known in the Philippines, which is why the province is named after her. Located right in front of the Church of Baler, the Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House is a rebuilt replica at the corner of San Luis St and Rizal St.

Baler 400 Years Monument

Baler 400 Years Monument

Built in 2011, the 400 years monument was created to celebrate the 400 years that Baler has existed. The actual anniversary was in 2009, but the memorial was unveiled two years later. It’s a 40-foot-tall monument. It comprises four pillars, representing the four hundred years of Baler Township.

The Museo de Baler

Museo de Baler

Quezon Park is an excellent place and home to a few other sights, but the Museo de Baler is a central destination. A historical tale of the town is represented with photographs of provincial leaders, President Quezon, and his family, and photos from the Japanese, Spanish, and American periods of Baler’s history.

Visiting Museo de Baler is a great way to learn more about Baler’s rich history and culture. As you walk through the museum, you’ll be able to explore a variety of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Baler’s past. From its early beginnings to its present-day significance, the museum offers a wealth of information about the town’s journey.

You’ll also find a special exhibit dedicated to the legendary “Siege of Baler,” a battle in 1898 between Spanish forces and Filipino troops. This exhibit highlights the bravery and courage of the Filipino soldiers and their eventual victory against the Spanish. Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious about Baler’s past, Museo de Baler is an excellent place to explore and better understand the town’s heritage.

Location: Quezon Street, Baler, Aurora Entrance Fee: P30 per person Open Daily from 8AM to 5PM

Ermita Hill

Overlooking Baler Bay from Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is incredibly excellent for the view you can see from the park. Ermita Hill is on a kind of small peninsula, a quiet place that juts out above the gorgeous waters below. Views of Baler Bay and Sabang Beach are picturesque from the view decks.

Visit Ditumabo or Mother Falls

Ditumabo Falls

In the town of San Luis, the hidden beauty of Aurora is the grandest of all waterfalls in the province: the Ditumabo Falls, commonly known as Mother Falls. The waterfalls are some 15-meter high, dropping to a small reservoir, creating a green-colored natural swimming pool that can accommodate over 100 persons.

Location: San Luis, Aurora Entrance Fee: P30 per person / Guide Fee P200, good for 10 pax

DIY Travel Tips

Like many places, Baler has a lot to offer that you won’t necessarily be able to plan for. I like to go to Baler because it’s always got a surprise waiting for me. Sometimes the surprise is a visit to a beach I’d never seen before – like Amper, Borlongan, or Cemento – and other times, it’s finding a place to eat recommended by someone else staying in town. There are a lot of great day trips, so it’s easy to plan things to be complete, but resist the temptation and leave some of your time wide open.

BALER ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

BALER ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Every traveler goes through a series of awakenings. The first is usually the moment when it dawns on them that they are born to wander.

Mine happened in Baler. I was a high school sophomore, attending a Boy Scout Regional Jamboree held in Aurora, which was part of Region IV-A at the time. I spent over 16 hours in a packed chartered jeepney from Batangas to Baler, my long-distance travel debut. With eyes wide open and heart full of awe, I saw Aurora as a wonderland. Our camp was set up in a clearing by the stream, in between a lush forest and an ivory coast. Over a few days, we saw our first waterfall, and enjoyed fine beaches and mountaineering trails. I was never the same again.

It’s because of this that I did not want to return to Aurora — it’s the fear of shattering a perfect image I painted in my head when I was a kid. I was afraid that, like most good things in life, Baler too has changed and it would not be the same place that I carefully guarded in my juvenile recollections. I was 13 years old then. I’m 31 now. It’s been 18 long years.

But the time to return has come.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Baler

It all started when, all of a sudden, we felt a strong desire to learn how to surf. It’s something that we had never tried before, even though we had been to a number of surfing havens around the world. Pagudpud is too far. La Union, we had just visited a few months before. Scanning the map for somewhere close, Baler was naturally brought up. For the past several years, Baler has been synonymous with surfing.

A lot has changed since my visit as a kid. First, travel time is much shorter and comfortable. From Manila, Baler can now be reached after only a 5-6-hour drive on generally paved roads. The province has also been moved from the jurisdiction of Region IV-A (Southern Tagalog) to Region III (Central Luzon).

trip to baler

It’s a small town whose recorded history can be traced back to 1609 when it was founded by Franciscan missionaries. When we were talking to locals, we noticed that they put Ermita Hill in such high regard. Our surfing instructor pointed to it proudly a few times during the session. The caretaker of the hotel where we were staying encouraged us to see it too. It wasn’t until we were there that we finally understood the significance of the place. In 1735, a tsunami ravaged the town and killed thousands. Only six families, who were able to run to the top of Ermita Hill, survived. Our guide shared that most of the population can trace their roots to any of the six families.

Today, although Baler is much more connected to the rest of the world, it remains a small town. It is the capital of Aurora but it is not a city, so don’t expect the capricious comforts or whims you’re used to in the metro. Life here is still simple and pretty laid-back.

  • Language : Tagalog mostly. But there are a few Ilocano speakers. English is widely understood.
  • Currency : Philippine peso (PhP). PhP100 = USD2, EUR 1.65, KRW 22000, JPY218
  • Mode of payment : Cash. There are a few ATMs in town so it would be best to have cash before your visit.

How to Get to Baler from Manila

The easiest way to reach Baler is by bus. There are direct buses available from Cubao in Quezon City. You have two options:

trip to baler

  • GENESIS BUS . The cheap option. Your typical air-conditioned bus that makes a few stops throughout the trip. Travel time: 6-7 hours. Fare: P550.
  • JOYBUS . The comfortable option. A non-stop bus service with more comfortable seats, much bigger legroom, blankets, pillows, and even snacks. Travel time: 5-6 hours. Fare: P750.

But there’s an even cheaper option. You can travel to Cabanatuan by bus (Another option is to travel to Cabanatuan by bus (P185) and then by van to Baler (P220).

Where to Stay in Baler

First things first: If you’re visiting on a weekend or holiday (especially in summer), you might want to book way in advance. Baler is small and rooms can sell out easily on peak dates.

The two properties below are the highest-rated on Agoda.

Budget Option: Blue Coco Baler Beach House

Blue Coco Baler Beach House, a beachfront property, has air-conditioned rooms that are good for 2pax for only P1700 per night. That’s only P850 per person.

How to get around baler.

If you have your own car, it will be very easy to explore Baler. The roads are mostly paved, and tourist attractions are not that far apart. If you want, you can just hire a guide to give you directions and more local insights about each stop. Guide fee: P500.

Otherwise, you have four options.

  • By van . P2500 per day. Good for up to 10 pax.
  • By tricycle . Full day tour, P800 per day. Half-day tour, P300. Up to 3 pax.
  • By bicycle . Mountain bike rental, P300 per day or P35 per hour.
  • By motorcycle . Cheapest motorbike rental we found, P800 per day. Not sure if there are lower options.

Van and tricycle tours will stop at the following:

  • Ditumabo Falls

Diguisit Falls

  • Aniao Rock Formations
  • 600-yo Balete Tree
  • PAGASA Viewpoint (van, motorcycle)

Note that these rates don’t include entrance and parking fees, which we will indicate in the “Places to Visit” section below.

For short distances, you may travel by tricycle for only P10-P20 per person, depending on the distance.

Places to Visit in Baler

With the exception of Ampere Beach, all these can be visited by taking a tricycle or van tour. If your hotel is close to Sabang Beach, you can skip this and just enjoy the beach another day since it’s near anyway.

If you’re on a tricycle tour, you will need to transfer to habal-habal to get to Dicasalarin Cove or PAGASA Viewpoint because the road is too steep for trikes. Make sure you make prior arrangements.

Sabang Beach

Sabang Beach, the most accessible swimming and surfing spot in Baler. The water here is shallow but the swell strong, which makes it an ideal place to learn to surf. Here are the rates: Surfboard rental + instructor fee: P350 per hour Surfboard rental only: P200 per hour or P800 per day

You may contact our surfing instructor who was very patient with us during our session. Here are his details:

  • Ian: 09281850211

Ditumabo Mother Falls

Located in San Luis. Will require a 20-minute hike. There are food stalls (selling hotdogs, kwek-kwek, lumpia, banana cue, camote cue, etc) along the trail. You can grab a quick breakfast here on your way back. If you can, visit in the early morning to avoid the crowd.

trip to baler

Note : Some people will tell you that vans and cars are not allowed to go to the start of the trail, and only tricycles can take you there (P200 roundtrip). That’s NOT TRUE. Private cars can go.

Entrance Fee : P30 per person Parking Fee : P30 per vehicle Tour Guide Fee : P200 per guide

trip to baler

A quick, easy climb is required. But it can get slippery in the afternoon, when drenched guests have wetted the trail.

Entrance Fee : FREE Cottage Rental : P200

Aniao Rock Formations and Lukso-lukso Islets

trip to baler

Aka Diguisit Islets. A handful of picturesque islets peppering the rocky coast near Diguisit Falls.

Entrance Fee : P20 per head

600-Year Old Balete Tree

A ginormous banyan tree. You can also go inside it for a fee.

trip to baler

Entrance Fee : P15 Parking Fee : P10 per vehicle If you want to go inside the tree : P10

Ermita Hill

trip to baler

Where the six families who survived the tsunami ran to. From here, you can enjoy a great view of Baler town and Sabang Beach and other surrounding areas. The entrance fee goes to the scholarship of several students at a nearby college.

Entrance Fee : P15 Parking Fee : P10

Dicasalarin Cove

trip to baler

A private beach tucked neatly behind the hills of Baler. If you plan on visiting, you will have to register beforehand at Costa Pacifica. (The two properties are owned by the same owner.) If you want to maximize your stay here, we recommend dedicating an entire morning.

Again, tricycles can’t access this because the road is too steep so you might want to pre-arrange a habal-habal ride to take you to Dicasalarin from the trike dropoff point. Your tricycle driver likely knows someone.

Opening hours : 8am-5pm Entrance Fee : P300 (P100 for Costa Pacifica guests) Habal-habal ride : P200-P300 roundtrip

Other Baler Tourist Spots:

  • Ampere Beach
  • PAGASA Viewpoint
  • Baler Museum
  • Aurora House
  • Baler Church
  • Hanging Bridge

Where to Eat in Baler

The three food places that stood out for us are: Kublai, Bayler View, and Dialyn.

Kubli Bistro . A newly opened restaurant in Poblacion. Without a doubt, it is here that we had our best dining experience in town. The food is delish, the place clean, the servings humongous, and the service impeccable. They are proudest of their kubli rice (P345), but it was just okay. But we absolutely loved everything else we tried. Order their barbeque skewers (P275), sisig a la bopes (P230), buffalo wings (P285), and adwas iced tea (P65). Every serving is good for around 3 pax.

trip to baler

Bayler View . A simple open-air restaurant by the beach. Their menu is loaded with Pinoy and western options. Judging from the tables during our visit, Pinoy spaghetti is a favorite. But we loved their perfectly cooked Buttered Chicken, despite being too sweet for my taste.

trip to baler

Dialyn’s Bakeshop . An iconic establishment in Baler famous for their brazo de mercedes, yema swirl, asado buns, and more.

Sample Baler Itinerary with Expenses Breakdown

Here’s a sample Baler weekend itinerary. You can tweak this to fit your needs and preferences.

Note that the costs indicated here are per person. However, this itinerary assumes you’re a group of 4, splitting the bill. The cost per stop covers the entrance fee, parking fee, and guide fee (if applicable). For the breakdown, just check out at the “Places to Visit” section above.

Since there are 4 in the group and a tricycle can accommodate only 3, charter 2 tricycles so everyone’s comfortable.

Day 1: DICASALARIN + SURFING 01:30 am – ETD Genesis Bus Cubao – P550 08:00 am – ETA Baler 08:30 am – Early hotel check in or baggage drop 09:00 am – Start Tricycle Tour – P250 (P500/2 pax) 09:30 am – Transfer to habal-habal – P150 (P300/2 pax) 09:40 am – Dicasalarin Cove – P300 + P50 parking 11:40 am – Aniao Rock Formations – P20 12:00 pm – Diguisit Falls – FREE 01:00 pm – Lunch at Poblacion (end tour) 02:00 pm – Back at hotel, rest 03:30 pm – Surf time at Sabang Beach! 05:30 pm – Watch sunset 06:10 pm – Freshen up at hotel 07:30 pm – Dinner at Bayler – P200 10:00 pm – Lights out

Day 2: DITUMABO FALLS + TOWN TOUR 07:00 am – Start tricycle tour – P250 (P500/2pax) 07:30 am – Ditumabo Falls – P95 per person (parking, guide, entrance) 09:30 am – Balete Park – P30 10:30 am – Continue tour: see other stops 12:30 pm – Lunch at Kubli Bistro (end tour) – P250 02:00 pm – Back at hotel, check out 03:30 pm – Joybus to Manila – P750

If you’re a group of 4 and you stay in a quad room at Smart Beach House, each of you should prepare around P3800 . If you want to surf, add P200 per hour for the board rental.

If you have your own ride and you have a P2500 budget for gas and toll fees (divided by 4 pax), the same itinerary will set you back P2400 per person.

You can still reduce the cost by doing the following:

  • Eat at cheaper eateries . The sample itinerary above urges you to eat at Bayler View or Kubli Bistro, but there are much cheaper food places around town. P100 should be more than enough for a decent meal.
  • Wrap up your tour early so you could catch the 2pm Genesis bus to Manila instead of taking the Joybus. It will save you P200.
  • As mentioned, the cost will drop significantly if you have your own ride and your group is bigger . This way you have more to split the gas and toll expenses with.

This travel guide is a work in progress. We’ll be updating this when we remember something and every time we return. If you have more to add, let us know in the comments section below.

[…] For Baler side trip: Baler Budget Travel Guide […]

Jhoana Bassig

Hi, my husband and I are planning to go to Baler next week. We will bring our 2 kids with us. My daughter is 7 and my son is 2. Is it hard to bring kids while touring around? For example with Diguisit Falls and Ditumabo Falls that requires a hike? I hope you can help me out. Also, is it ok to go since its December? Thank you!

Yosh Dimen

Hi Jhoana, the Diguisit hike is very, very short but steep. The waterfall is close to the road. It can be difficult if you’re with a 2yo though.

The Ditumabo hike is easy. It’s generally flat and the trail is well-trodden. There’s also a food stop in the middle.

I think December is great, but expect the water at the base of the waterfall to be extremely cold.

Jhonie Macalintal

Hi Sir! Is it possible to book on the day itself sa mismong terminal ni Genesis or Joy bus?

Yep. Unless peak season kasi konti lang seats so mabilis maubos.

Dredd

Hi Good Day… ilang minutes papunta Ditumabo falls? Keri ba ng 7 years old ito? Thanks much

Mga 30 minutes lang from the parking lot. Yep, kayang kaya ng 7 years old.

Hi Kevin, wala po eh. Shinare lang sa amin ng guide namin ung info.

Patrick Enrile

Hello! tanong ko lang po about the travel time and the pavement going to Baler? Kaya po ba ng maliit na sasakyan (Toyota Wigo with 3 passengers) yung travel coming from Manila? Not sure kung may part na matarik or rough road on the way there.

Hi Patrick, if I remember correctly, paved naman almost lahat ng dinaanan namin. May part na medyo rough, pero sandali lang yun. I think kaya naman ng Wigo.

Rommel De Leon

Arieh

Hi po, just want to ask if magcheck in kami on the spot sa resort, once na makarating sa baler my makikita po ba agad kami, we’re coming from batangas then commute lang po kami kasi masfeel namen ang magtravel na hawak namen ang oras and ano po masusuggest niyo na resort na maganda good for 4 or 5?

Thank you po

Depende. Mahirap masabi.

Pero generally, kung weekday, pwede na walang advance booking. Pero pag summer and weekend, best na meron.

anna liza b.

hello po ano po ba ang mag kakalapit na tourists destination dun… kasi two days lang kami and need pa namin mag bench marking sa mcc???

Check the sample itinerary to see kung ano yung magkakasunod and how much time you can spend at each stop.

John

The anecdote sold it for me. Onto Aurora we go!

It’s nice seeing a fellow Batangueño thrive on blogging. Sana mailibre kita ng kape minsan hahaha

Thanks, John! :) Enjoy Aurora!

San ka sa Batangas?

sammm

hello po. what is the contact no or where can we find a guide to hire for personal tour po? we’re planning to go this month po to baler and it’s our first time going out on vacation, 3 po kami. is it better to hire a guide than getting a tricycle tour, or is that the same thing? we’re just commuting, we don’t have our own car.

If you’re on a budget, you can just charter a tricycle. The drivers usually know where to go. Sila na yung bahala.

But if you want to learn more info about the stops, you can get a guide pero extra bayad yun. Unfortunately, nawala namin ung contact number nung guide namin. :(

Krem

Hello, yung Habal po ba available lang anywhere sa baler, or may marerecommend po kayo?

Hi Krem, dun sa paakyat ba ng Dicasalarin? Merong naghihintay dun sa entry point paakyat.

Queena Caroso

Hello po, Im planning to have a solo travel to baler this coming december. I prefer to rent a motorcycle, do you think its advisable for solo traveller?

Mukhang okay lang naman. Safe naman, I think.

Queena

josephine capistrano

Facade of Baler Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish, or more commonly known as Baler Church, was constructed back in 1611. It first stood on the site of an important battle called the "Siege of Baler" which took place during the Philippine Revolution.

The church was initially made from bamboo and nipa. Years after, it was renovated using stones and rocks that were held together by lime and honey. However, the church was later destroyed by a massive tidal wave known as "Tromba Marina" in 1735. Soon after that natural disaster, locals rebuilt the chapel on the highest point in San Luis Street in Barangay Buhangin, where it currently stands.

During the Spanish period in the country, Spanish forces made the church their garrison until they surrendered it in 1899. Aside from this, Baler Church was also the home of a famous large bell called La Campana De Baler. Fray Jose de Esperagoza brought it to the province in the 17th century. The bell later became well-known for its loud echoing sounds that even reached the neighboring towns of San Luis, Maria, and Dipaculao.

In light of its cultural significance in Baler, the National Historical Institute proclaimed it as a historical landmark in 2000.

11. Baler Hanging Bridge

Baler Hanging Bridge above a river

The Baler Hanging Bridge is situated along Zabali Road and connects the barangays of Tibang and Sabang. The bridge is made of wooden planks and railings that are suspended above a wide river by sturdy metal cables. It measures about a meter in width and is over a hundred meters long.

While locals often use it for their daily errands, it has become one of the well-known tourist attractions in Baler, Aurora over the years due to the stunning views it offers. As you make your way from one end of the bridge to the other, you will be able to get a panoramic view of the river and the vast mountainscape in the distance. Travelers can also catch a glimpse of the river's opening that connects to Baler Bay.

Visitors who traverse the bridge are treated to a refreshing breeze as well, thanks to its position. Before reaching the other end, you can also take the time to take photos of the beautiful scenery around you. On either end of the walkway are a couple of souvenir shops that feature local delicacies and trinkets that showcase the area's culture.

10. Baler Lighthouse

Baler Lighthouse on a hill in Baler

Another popular spot that provides tourists with stunning views of Baler's natural wonders is the Baler Lighthouse, one of the top lighthouses in the Philippines. This white structure sits on one of the hills of Sitio Tibag. After arriving at the parking area, visitors will have to hike up the hill to reach the towering structure.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you are immediately rewarded with a stunning view of Baler Bay's deep blue waters. You can also see Diguisit Beach from the hill's peak. For travelers looking for an even better vantage point, you can climb up the steps that circle the lighthouse to reach its top.

From the top, you can feel the sea breeze blowing while enjoying the panoramic view of the bay and the nearby hills. You can also see the structure's huge light and solar panels that power it. While it no longer serves as a beacon for ships coming to Baler, tourists still drop by to take in the view.

9. Museo de Baler

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the province by visiting their local museum, Museo de Baler. One of the must-visit museums in the Philippines, the two-story building stands in Quezon Park in Barangay Poblacion. Even before entering the museum, you can already see a beautiful artwork on its red brick exterior.

The installation depicts crucial moments and individuals throughout the province's history.  Meanwhile, a statue of the late Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, a native of Baler, sits in the center of the park.

Inside the museum, you will see exhibits and several historical artifacts that date back to the Spanish colonization period in the Philippines. Among these items are old letters from missionaries who lived in the region from the early 1600s up to the late 1890s.

On its second floor, visitors can find pieces relating to the Siege of Baler. These artworks include paintings of those who took part in the fight and those who survived it as well. Along with the historical pieces, the museum also features more contemporary pieces of art. The most notable ones are the props from the 2008 Filipino drama film named after the province.

8. Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home

Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home in Baler

Photo by Provincial Government of Aurora

A few minutes away from the museum is another historic site: a replica of the ancestral home of Aurora Quezon, the wife of the late president Manuel L. Quezon. The cement and wooden home is situated on the corner of Rizal Street and San Luis street. It also features a roof made from dried nipa leaves, which was often used for traditional homes in the Philippines.

However, the house is not an exact copy of Aurora's original home, as local authorities recreated it with sturdier material. Despite this, it still features many items, such as a coal-heated iron that were likely used by Aurora's family back in the day. The interior also houses a large colored painting of Aurora and the late president.

While Aurora was widely known as the second First Lady of the Philippines, she was an important historical figure in her own right as well. Aurora gained the respect of her fellow Baler natives and other Filipinos through her various humanitarian efforts. Among these was her time as the first Chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross and her involvement in advocating for Filipino women's right to vote.

In honor of her notable contributions, the province where Baler is located, Aurora, was named after her.

View of the Balete Tree's roots and canopy

The Balete Tree in Aurora is known for being the biggest of its kind in the whole continent of Asia. This enormous tree is cared for in a park inside the municipality of Maria Aurora. This tree has been around for over 600 years and has grown to about 200 feet.

Balete trees are also often regarded as homes of fairies and other magical creatures in Philippine mythology. Whether or not you believe in myths, you can slip past an opening between the roots of the tree here to inspect for yourself.

The tree is so huge that several people can fit inside its interior of twisted roots. The interior appears almost like an otherworldly destination, as light can only come in from the gaps between the entangling roots.

From inside the tree, you can climb up the tangle of roots to get a closer look at the tree's large crown. However, scaling the tree from the inside involves squeezing through tight gaps. Aside from this, travelers can also climb the tree from the outside by clinging to the sturdy roots that make up the gigantic evergreen.

6. Diguisit and Aniao Islet

One rock formation in Diguisit Beach, Baler

Diguisit Beach is one of the popular surfing spots in Baler and is located about 11 KM from the town proper. In addition to the constant waves that are great for surfing, this white sand beach also boasts unique rock formations and crystal clear water.

The most famous formations here are the Aniao Islets, which are two small islands. These islets were naturally shaped by the strong waves that slam against the shore when the winds are strong. Surrounding these sturdy formations were rocky landscapes that become pools of cool water whenever the tide is low.

  • Book a Dingalan Aurora day tour

Each islet is also home to small patches of greenery that make their profile even more unique. The islets make for amazing photos at sunset when the tide is low, and the orange-pinkish hues reflect on the pools of water surrounding them. Aside from the natural formations, Diguisit Beach is also known as an ideal location for snorkeling from May to November when the winds are weaker.

5. Ampere Beach and Rock Formations

Rock formations at Ampere Beach, Baler

Another destination that features rock formations is the Ampere Beach, just west of Baler Beach. In contrast to the finer sands of most beaches that line Baler Bay, this spot boasts a shoreline comprised mainly of different-sized pebbles. While it is not an ideal swimming spot due to the strong waves that lap the shore, it still attracts tourists thanks to its unique landscape.

Aside from admiring the sturdy rock formations that jut from the beach's waters, tourists can also make their own "rock formations" with the smooth pebbles that make up the shore. Feel free to get creative as you stack rocks on top of each other, and make sure to snap a photo of your small towers for a unique souvenir! Though the pebble beach and the large rock formations are the main draws of this attraction, travelers can find a lesser-known spot just past the karst-like walls.

Beyond the rock walls, you can find a cave. Locals are said to forecast the weather by measuring how loud the waves slam against the interior of the cave. The louder it gets, the worse the weather would supposedly be.

4. Ermita Hill

The entrance to Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is a historical and natural landmark located in Barangay Zabali. Its cultural significance dates back to 1735, when a large tidal wave called Tromba Marina struck the region. During the natural disaster, the residents headed up the hill to seek refuge from the fast-rising waters that were engulfing the homes.

However, only a few families managed to make it up the hill in time, while the strong surge of water wiped out the rest. To commemorate the hardships that the natives had to overcome, statues depicting people helping each other scale the hill were placed here. Most of the artworks were put along the cemented path that leads up to the hilltop.

Once you reach the top, you will enter a deck that provides a panoramic view of Baler Bay, its surrounding forestry, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Take your time to relax and take photos before heading back down. There are also gazebos where you can sit and take in the view and a modest chapel where you can say a prayer.

3. Dicasalarin Cove

View of Dicasalrin Cove from a nearby hill

Dicasalarin Cove is a private-owned beach that attracts tourists with its pristine waters and stunning white sand beach. The beach is surrounded by natural landscapes that often break the waves, making the water here calmer than most beaches in Baler. Since the area is managed by the owners of Costa Pacifica, a nearby resort, travelers must first register here to reach the cove.

The cove sits about 10 KM away from the resort and best accessed by car or renting out tricycles or motorcycles. After arriving at the cove, you will be greeted by a picturesque shoreline that stretches for miles on both sides. Unwind and enjoy the cove's cool waters by going for a swim or snorkeling.

Aside from the cove's shore, travelers can also head up to the nearby lighthouse to get a beautiful view of the bay. Guests also frequent the lighthouse because of its more modern and geometric shape. If you want to extend your stay on this secluded cove, you can also rent tents, air beds, and sleeping bags. You can set up camp along the shoreline to fall asleep to the gentle sound of waves lapping the beach.

2. Ditumabo Falls

View of Ditumabo Falls from a natural pool

The Ditumabo Falls is a grand waterfall that stands at about 140 feet tall. Locals commonly refer to it as The Mother Falls, largely due to its sheer size, especially when compared to other waterfalls in the province. Though it is located in the neighboring town of San Luis, this attraction is often visited by tourists when staying in Baler since it is only about 15 KM from Baler's town proper.

Nestled in a lush forest, travelers first have to trek through rivers and rocky paths to reach the majestic waterscape. The trek can also prove to be difficult as the rocks in the rivers can be slippery. While the journey to the falls is not smooth, just getting to see it up close makes the trip worthwhile.

After arriving at the falls, you will be greeted by natural pools that the clear, ice-cold water drops into. The rocky basin is large and is ideal for swimming, so make sure to take a dip and take in the grandeur of this natural wonder.

View of Sabang Beach's shoreline

Sabang Beach is a gray sand beach that is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Baler. Thanks to the frequent waves that approach the shore, it is a great place to learn how to surf for the first time. Various shops and resorts in Baler that line the shore offer lessons for beginners and even more advanced surfers.  It is one of the top places to visit in Baler, Aurora.

Baler natives began to surf in 1976, when the epic war movie "Apocalypse Now" filmed in Charlie's Point, a resort along this beach. Soon after the production wrapped up filming, locals taught themselves how to ride the waves with surfboards that the movie's crew had left behind. Since then, more and more people come to this beach to learn as well.

Thanks to the large crowds of surfers that the waves here attract, the beach scene is often lively. After you've had your fill of surfing, you can then enjoy the delicious cuisine served at the beachside restaurants. Travelers can also stay until after the sun sets to partake in the local nightlife scene or to simply go on a stroll along the two-kilometer-long stretch of sand.

Baler Travel Guide: Aurora’s Prime Surfing Destination

Baler

Heading to Baler soon? Then this Baler travel guide will surely come handy. Provided in this guide are necessary information a tourist needs to know before visiting this surfing paradise in Luzon. Information such as travel requirements, how to get there, where to stay, activities, sample itinerary, budget, and other tips.

Haller, Baler!

Mention Baler and the first thing that will pop in everyone’s mind is surfing! And this without a doubt is true because Sabang Beach is a real surfer’s paradise. But more than surfing, the town is increasingly becoming popular not only to surfing enthusiasts, primarily because of its natural beauty, historical significance and other attractions.

Baler is the capital of the province of Aurora. It is situated on the east coast of Luzon, fronting the roaring waves of Pacific Ocean and enclosed by the mountains of Sierra Madre. The town’s relative isolation has preserved much of its historical sites, cultural heritage and tradition that are all deeply rooted on its vibrant past.

Baler

Looking back, there are major events in the past three centuries that marked significantly in the town’s history: on December 27, 1735, a phenomenal tidal wave (“tromba marina” in Spanish) wiped out the coastal town; from June 27, 1898 to June 2, 1899, fifty four soldiers of Spanish Army barricaded inside the town’s church and bore the brunt of the Philippine revolutionary forces; and in 1979, the Hollywood classic film “Apocalypse Now” filmed their surfing scenes in Sabang Beach. All these plus all those little folklore and stories shaped the town to what it is now.

Baler is Baler! It has unique identity and charm that sets it apart from other places in the country. Have a bit of adventure, a lesson in history and commune with nature, visit Baler!

There are at least three trips a day, with travel time of five hours and P750 (November 2014 rate) fare. Advance reservation is required.
  • The regular air-con bus that travels six to seven hours for a fare of P450, advance reservation is not necessary.

Although Genesis has a published schedule of the trips , the schedule of the regular aircon bus is almost always not followed. Joy Bus from Cubao to Baler are set to depart at 12:30AM, 1:30AM, 2:30AM and 5:30AM while the regular air-con bus has supposed to have hourly trip from 2AM to 8AM but it also depends on the volume of passengers. Where to Eat in Baler

When in Baler, dining should not be a problem. Most major hotels in Sabang have their own restaurants that are open to public. Kubli Bistro, Crash Pad Baler, Aliya Surf Cam Restaurant, Bayler’s Inn, Bay’s Inn Hungry Surfer Restaurant and Baler Surfer’s Grill are some of the most popular restaurants in the area.

My personal favorite is Kubli Bistro with their good pizza, paella and other Mexican and Filipino foods. Bayler’s Inn is also worth a try with their Tuna Carbonara and Longanisa Aglio Olia Pasta as well as their Chocnut Turon Ala Mode. If you are into buffet, Chef Jerry Shan’s Place in the plaza is the place to be for only P199 per person. Night life is limited to restaurants along Sabang Beach.

10 Best BALER TOURIST SPOTS (History, Heritage & Surfing)

 alt=

I planned to travel to Baler a few months ago. I even booked my Airbnb for seven days, but because of unexpected circumstances, my trip didn’t push through.

After a few weeks, I got invited by the Philippines Tourism Promotions Board to be part of The Grand North Luzon Fun Caravan by PHILTOA, a seven-day trip, exploring the ten provinces in the northern Philippines . I don’t know if I’m lucky, but Baler is part of the itinerary.

Despite my canceled trip, I was still able to explore the laid-back town in the north dubbed as one of the best surfing spots in the Philippines.

Baler is also a place for culture and history enthusiasts. Many important events in our history happened in Baler, and I am lucky to be able to visit these spots with a knowledgeable tour guide explaining the significance of these places.

During the pre-colonial Spanish era, there was a community in Baler called Balid. The word Balid means copper wire, a commodity traded by Chinese visitors with the locals. The word Balid later became Baler, which is believed to be the origin of the town’s name.

Baler is famous for surfers and the beach, but the town offers a lot more. The laid-back vibe is inviting, a town that has a rich story and has played an enormous part in our history. So, join me in exploring Baler. Here are the best tourist spots in Baler. Let this be your guide when you decide to visit this town in Aurora.

1. Surf at Sabang Beach

Locals agree that the tourism boost of Baler started in Sabang, started with surfing. Baler has become a popular surfing spot in the country, as many tourists from Manila and even foreigners spend weekends in Baler. More professional surfers also visit Baler to perfect their craft.

Baler Aurora

Sabang beach is the center of tourism, where many resorts, restaurants, hostels, and hotels are lined up to cater to the growing surfing community.  Surfboard rental and instructor’s fee is around 350 pesos per hour. If you’re a surfer and want to rent a surfboard, you can do that with only 200 pesos per hour of rental.

2. Baler Church – San Luis Obispo Parish

Baler Church looks like the typical church that we usually see in the provinces, but this one played such an essential part in our history.

Baler Aurora

They call this the Siege of Baler , and it lasted for almost a year. They stayed inside the church for more than a year, until further negotiations took place and they were allowed to go back to Spain.

We were so lucky to have an excellent local tour guide to share the stories of each spot that we visited in Baler. You can also avail of this through the “historical walk” offered by the local tourism office.

3. Dona Aurora House

A few steps from the church is the Dona Aurora Aragon- Quezon House. It is a replica of the original house where the former Philippine first lady and wife of President Manuel L. Quezon grew up.

Our guide explains that the house is not the exact house, which was made mostly of nipa hut. The National Historical Commission decided to build a more sturdy house to withstand the test of time or any typhoons in the future.

Baler Aurora

Still, the importance of this house in the lives of the locals remains. It stores some of Dona Aurora Aragon’s historical and valuable items, such as book collections and photographs.

4. Balete Tree

Baler Aurora

It is said that Balete is home to the supernaturals – the engkanto , kapre , etc. This makes this tree in Aurora intriguing to every tourist.

This is also named the Millenium Tree, said to be the largest in Asia, and is almost 600 years old. Our guide said that it would take more than 50 people to encircle the entire tree while holding hands.

The tree is also a famous spot for picture taking. You’ll encounter kids here willing to take your most wacky and creative shots. Please do give them a tip for their effort and creativity.

5. Quezon Park

Our guide has a lot of interesting stories about Quezon Park, located at the center of the downtown area near the church and Dona Aurora’s house. It was named to commemorate the former President of the country – Manuel L. Quezon, who hailed from Baler.

Baler Aurora

But the most notable section is the statue of Manuel L. Quezon, just sitting, chilling on his chair. Unlike any other usual statue that stands tall and proud, Quezon’s was unassuming, replicating what would be a typical day for him in Baler.

By the time Quezon was sick of tuberculosis; he requested to be back in Baler. But that never happened, so the artist of his sculpture thought of creating something that simply shows that the former President is back in his homeland, relaxing on his patio and looking at the vast ocean.

6. Museo de Baler

Baler Aurora

Some of the most notable features of the museum are paintings and stories of Manuel Quezon as well as his wife, Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon. There is a particular part that showcases scriptures about the life of the former first lady, who was responsible for fighting for the rights of women to vote. Some clothes and artifacts are also displayed to showcase the story and culture of the indigenous people.

If you like history and enjoy learning about our culture, Museo de Baler will not disappoint.

7. Diguisit Rock Formations

If you’re looking for a stunning view of nature in the morning or during sunset, Diguisit Rock Formation is just a tricycle ride away from Sabang Beach.

Visitors can access it through Daguisit beach, and walk until reaching the rock formation. The place is an outcome of years of waves crashing into rocks creating these sculptures of nature. A walking distance by the beach is the Diguisit falls located near the highway. Anyone is free to take a dip into relaxing natural waters from the mountain.

8. Dicasalarin Cove

There are many breathtaking spots in Baler, and one of these is Dicasalarin Cove – a secluded piece of paradise just a few kilometers from town proper.

Baler Aurora

Photo by Gabriel Villena on Unsplash

The Angaras of Baler privately own this property. All visitors have to pay an entrance fee of PHP 300, a price that is worthy of the beauty that you’re about to enjoy at Dicasalarin. Creamy white beach with ocean blue waters are just some of it. On the right of the cove is the famous Baler Lighthouse, which anyone can climb and visit.

9. Ditumabo Falls

You just need to trek for less than an hour passing through forests and rivers until reaching the Ditumabo Falls or Mother Falls. Located in the neighboring town of San Luis, Ditumabo is the largest waterfall in the province, that’s why it is also called the mother falls.

Dipping into the cold waters of Ditumabo is all worthy of the trek, giving anyone that much-needed relaxation. To enjoy Ditumabo, tourists have to hire a guide for PHP 200 and an entrance fee of PHP 30 per person.

10. Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill provides stunning views of Baler Bay and Aniao Islets. It is also a place where anyone can enjoy trekking and camping activities.

But this also plays a huge part in Aurora’s history. On December 27, 1735, the entire Baler experienced a catastrophe, “Tromba Marina” or tsunami engulfed the whole town with seawater, and only a handful of families survived by taking refuge at the Ermita Hill.

Until today, the incident is remembered through the Tromba Marina Monument – a sculpture of a family climbing up the hill located at the base of the mountain.

Baler Travel Guide

Baler, a town situated on the east coast of Luzon in the province of Aurora, is a well-known surfing destination because of its strategic location. It is fronting the roaring waves of the Pacific Ocean, and is cuddled by the mountains of Sierra Madre. Planning a Trip to Baler? Here’s What You Need to Know!

January 7, 2020 by Ray L 1 Comment

Ah, Baler. It’s one of those amazing destinations I didn’t think I’d ever travel to and so I didn’t think about it much, so it’s a great thing my cousin decided to hold his wedding there and we were finally able to see it.

Before I was ever a hiker, my primary outdoor adventures involve beaches and snorkeling. Now how did I get into surfing even though I don’t know how to swim that well (or at all)? Back in college I joined, and later organized, week-long trips to the northern provinces of Luzon, and one of our final stops was a famous surfing spot in San Juan, La Union. The waters were shallow, the waves were calm, and there are instructors you can hire to teach you. Perfect for beginners… just like Sabang beach of Baler!

Aside from La Union, I heard of other very famous surfing spots in the Philippines like Siargao, Baler, and Surigao, but I’ve always thought they were too far from Manila so I dismissed them from my mind. If I ever wanted to surf again, I’d just go to San Juan, La Union from October to January . It was a great stroke of luck that our family was invited to my distant cousin’s wedding in Sabang, Baler, and I got to experience firsthand how nice the waves are there.

Have you ever wondered what Baler’s Sabang beach is like? Here’s what I’ve experienced!

Planning for a Trip to Baler? Here’s What You Need to Know!

planning a trip to baler one adventurer

Take the Bus: Joy Bus from Cubao to Baler

I’m used to cramped bus seats and sleepless rides, but the Genesis bus company’s Joy Bus vehicles are somewhat unique. They have really nice and roomy seats that you can recline quite a bit, they have a footrest for your legs, and the vehicles have a toilet so you won’t need to wait for the next bus stop if you really need to go to the toilet.

baler joybus one adventurer

As for the road trip to Baler, it usually takes around five or six hours. We left Manila at midnight and got to Baler at 5:15am. Several tricycles were waiting at the bus station so we were able to get to our lodging at Sabang beach quickly. At the time we went there, the tricycle ride cost P20 per person.

By the way, while the route from Manila to Baler is nice and calm for the most part, one long section of the Nueva Ecija-Aurora road is full of turns and curves like the mountains of Baguio and Sagada. If you get carsick easily, you will really need to prepare some medicine for this part of the trip.

Sabang Beach

baler sunrise one adventurer

At the central region of Sabang beach, there’s a concrete baywalk raised above the sand, and there are plenty of restaurants, resorts, and surf shops. If you want to spend your Baler vacation near the ocean, there are lots of guesthouses and resorts to choose from and you can book most of them online, like through Booking.com.

As for the beach itself, it’s a beach break which means the bottom is sandy with almost no rocks or corals, and it’s also relatively shallow. The waves do get strong though, so if you’re bringing children along make sure to watch them carefully.

  • Mobile data signal is unstable in the area. It’s relatively usable in the north and southern ends of the baywalk though but don’t expect much.
  • Some cafes and restaurants in the area offer free WiFi and they’re decently fast.
  • Be careful as there are some spots with a strong undercurrent and they’ll pull you towards the ocean.

baler surfboards displayed one adventurer

First time surfing? There’s plenty of surf shops and instructors in the area! If you’re a beginner, I really recommend hiring an instructor. Aside from teaching you the basics, they’ll also pull you to sea so you don’t have to paddle against the waves, they’ll choose a good spot for you, they’ll tell you which waves you can ride and time your turn according to surfer etiquette. Overall, they’ll make your surfing experience much more enjoyable.

On my visit, I decided to try surfing without an instructor as I’ve already had experience in La Union. Sadly, I couldn’t surf ANY waves at all during that hour. I didn’t know how to spot which waves you can ride and I forgot a lot of the basics. Take it from me. Unless you have a lot of experience and practice, hire an instructor.

Where to Eat

baler breakfast one adventurer

When we got to Sabang beach at around 5:40am, I was really tired and hungry from the five-hour trip. Fortunately, some restaurants in Sabang beach open at 6am! I had a very nice breakfast with a great view of the sunrise over the ocean. If you’re staying multiple days in Baler, I suggest you wake up early to try it.

The food is decently priced here and you can expect to spend around P200 to P300 ($4 to $6) for a meal. They come in good portions too, compared to similarly priced items in Manila. Remember to try the pako , which is a type of fern popularly cooked as a vegetable in this region of the Philippines. My personal favorite has to be the pako and mozzarella pizza at Costa Pacifica resort.

One final note about the restaurants in the area is that although we were only able to try the restaurants along Sabang beach, there are also several cafes and bar and grills along Buton street on the other side of Sabang beach’s resorts so make sure to give them a shot!

What else can you do in Baler?

Since the entirety of our first day at Baler was about my cousin’s wedding, we didn’t have a lot of free time on our second day before our ride home at 3:30pm. After spending the morning swimming and surfing and checking out of our guesthouse by noon, we had less than three hours to explore the town of Baler. Thankfully, Hannah’s Lodge, the place we stayed at, had a local tricycle driver we could hire to give us a quick tour of the town.

Check out these places you can visit in Baler!

baler museum museo de baler one adventurer

The lodge had a more extensive tour package if you have an entire afternoon and you want to explore most of Baler, so just ask around when you get there!

Road Trip Guide: Dingalan, Baler & Dipaculao, Aurora

trip to baler

The province of Aurora is an underrated beauty. While its capital Baler draws international tourists and surfers, there’s more to the province than just riding the waves. For riders and road trippers, Aurora’s proximity to Metro Manila, the scenic views of the mountains and sea, and the quality of roads getting to and from different points in the province make it a great destination for road trips where you can just chill out for the weekend.

trip to baler

Baler has that tropical island vibe similar to surf towns like San Juan in La Union, Siargao and Palawan while still retaining the laid-back provincial appeal and local hospitality. It doesn’t feel as crowded as other beach towns but you can still find facilities that accommodate different types of travelers.

trip to baler

Aurora is one of the younger provinces in the Philippines, having only been established in 1979. All the towns here used to be part of Quezon. In fact, the mother province gets its name from Aurora Aragon, the wife of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, the president of the Philippine Commonwealth.

trip to baler

While you can find developed tourist spots in Baler, the other towns of Aurora also deserve attention. I was blown away by the beauty of Dingalan, a small coastal town that offers a majestic view of the Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges. The wide empty road leading to the towns of Northern Aurora towards Casiguran and Dilasag were a complete joy to ride, with scenic mountain views and uncrowded white-sand beaches. I’ve been to Baler several times before but after this motorcycle road trip, the province of Aurora has now become one of my favorites. I wouldn’t mind going back here for more.

trip to baler

For travelers interested in riding to Aurora, particularly Baler and Dingalan, I’m sharing this travel guide including how to get there (for small displacement bikes), where to stay, eat and things to do in the province based on our personal trip.

Table of Contents

Where exactly is Aurora?

Aurora is a coastal province in the Philippines located in the eastern part of Central Luzon region, facing the Philippine Sea. The province is bordered by the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park of Isabela, to the west by the central range of the Sierra Madre which contains the Casecnan Protected Landscape and Aurora Memorial National Park, to the south by the Umiray River, and to the east by the Philippine Sea which opens to the Philippine Sea. The San Ildefonso Peninsula lies in the province’s northern portion between the Philippine Sea and the Casiguran Sound.

trip to baler

Why it’s great for riders

Aurora is relatively near Manila, which makes it ideal for those based in the metro looking for overnight and long weekend rides. The roads going in are beautiful and traffic-free (once you get past the main highway). Aurora has a unique landscape featuring both mountain and beach scenery, but it’s less crowded and commercialized compared to other tourist areas in the country.

trip to baler

You can find upscale resorts and tourist-friendly facilities as well as quiet beaches for camping. In terms of the food scene, there aren’t a lot of fancy restaurants and fast-food joints, but you can get a good variety of fresh seafood and local delicacies. Seafood (especially in Dingalan) is incredibly cheap compared to other tourist areas.

trip to baler

For first time visitors, there are other activities you can do including surfing, hiking, water sports, and historical tours. For foreign tourists not traveling with their own motorcycles, a good option is to take the bus going there (so you can skip the traffic in Manila) and just rent a motorcycle once you get there for a more leisurely road trip. Motorcycle and bicycle rentals are available in Baler.

Check out my separate post: Travel Guide: Baler for directions to get there by public transportation.

Route Map for road trip (small displacement bikes)

On the map, the province of Aurora looks relatively near Manila, but don’t underestimate the traffic getting in and out of the highly urbanized cities. Getting to the capital Baler from Manila via the expressways can take 5-8 hrs depending on the traffic and the time you leave. If you leave at 5:00 am, you can get there by lunchtime.

NOTE: Open Googlemaps and click “Avoid highways and tolls” under options

Small displacement bikes that aren’t allowed on the expressways can pass through McArthur Highway or through San Jose del Monte and Angat in Bulacan to get to Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija. If Baler is your main destination, you have two main route options: Bongabon or Pantabangan . Most locals recommend passing the Pantabangan Route for safety, but we tried both just for the experience (more details below).

trip to baler

Aurora province covers a portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range, so expect elevation to be steep to very steep with mountainous winding roads in some portions. From the road leading to Dilasag, you can cross over to the neighboring province of Quirino.

Day 1: Manila to Dingalan, Aurora

  • Start point: Quezon City
  • End point: Cave Beach Resort, Dingalan, Aurora
  • Route: Quezon City – Commonwealth Avenue – Regalado Highway – Quirino Highway – San Jose Del Monte – Del Monte – Norzagaray Road – Angat – F. Viola Highway – Plaridel Bypass Road – Pan-Philippine Highway – Santa Rosa-Fort Magsaysay Road – Palayan-Gabaldon-Dingalan Road
  • Type of road: Highway, National Roads, small-town traffic, diversion roads, mostly flat
  • Scenic stops & landmarks: Random roadside views, Bato Ferry Bridge, Gabaldon welcome arch & marker, Dingalan marker
  • Travel time: 6 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 187 km

We left Quezon City at around 8:00 am and got to Dingalan at 2:00 pm, with just a few photo op stops & drink breaks in between. Getting out of Manila, we passed through Commonwealth Avenue going towards San Jose Del Monte, passing Norzagaray, Angat, out through the Plaridel bypass road which leads to AH26 Pan-Philippine highway in Maasim. This way you can skip traffic in Cabanatuan City and the main highway.

trip to baler

Once you get in from Sta. Rosa, the road offers beautiful mountain views, especially in Laur and Gabaldon. The route is smooth sailing all the way to Dingalan.

Where to Stay in Dingalan

Cave beach resort.

While in Dingalan, we stayed in Cave Beach Resort near the port in Brgy. Aplaya. This newly renovated resort has a great location facing the sea. Airconditioned rooms are clean and decent, with hot and cold showers, TVs and free WiFi. With 10 rooms, this place offers a nice, private and quiet getaway for couples, solo riders, families or small groups.

trip to baler

Cave Beach Resort has a nice garden, swimming pool, picnic huts facing the beach, and a few table games like a Foosball table and billiards for checked-in guests. For international tourists traveling by public transport who want to ride once they get there, they also have a couple of motorcycles available for rent. The resort can arrange tours if tour guides are available.

Where to eat in Dingalan

Arlyn’s seafood paluto.

The best meals of our entire trip in Aurora were in Dingalan. The style here is you buy fresh seafood from the market or fish stalls and have it cooked. They sell fresh lobsters, crabs, salmon, squid, shrimps, fish and vegetables like pako .

trip to baler

I highly recommend Arlyn’s Seafood Paluto , across the road from the markets and fish stalls. We gorged on lobsters, crabs, and other seafood here. We spent P300 only for lobsters and salmon at the market good for 2.

trip to baler

If you’re looking for a place to drink, Cave Beach Resort’s in-house restaurant also serves Western cuisine and has a bar with a selection of cocktails, local and international beers including Australian brand Foster’s, Budweiser, Heineken and more.

Day 2: Dingalan to Baler

Hike to dingalan mountain view.

We spent the next morning hiking up to Dingalan Mountian View, which offers the most iconic view of the town. There are two options to get there. You can hire a boat to take you to the coast (P800-P1000 per boat round trip good for 10 persons) from where you’ll start your hike, but you can also just walk along the coast (30 mins) from the Dingalan Feeder Port in the main town proper of Paltic.

trip to baler

The whole hike takes 45 mins to 1 hour, one way depending on your pace. Allot around 3-4 hrs including picture-taking and rest stops for the hike. The guide gee is P200 per tourist spot, with an additional charge if your guide joined you on the trek and back, plus the rate for hiring a tricycle to the jump-off point (P80/rt).

trip to baler

For those who have time, other tourist spots you can visit in Dingalan include:

  • Paltic Beach
  • Dingalan Lighthouse
  • Lamao Cave (only accessible by boat)
  • I love Dingalan Landmark
  • Tanawan Falls
  • Matawe Beach
  • Intertidal Zone
  • Makibato Falls
  • Umiray Coastline

trip to baler

After another amazing seafood lunch of crabs, calamares and pako salad at Arlyn’s Seafood Paluto, we doubled back to Gabaldon and headed to Baler following the Bongabon route.

Bongabon Route

  • Start point: Cave Beach Resort, Dingalan
  • End point: Nature Green Forest Resort, Baler
  • Route: Dingalan-Gabaldon Road, Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road, Bongabon, Baler
  • Type of road: Twisties, mountain roads, no traffic
  • Stops: Aurora Welcome arch (Bongabon), random roadside views , Baler signage
  • Travel time: 3-4 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 135 km

The Bongabon route was mostly paved but some road work was ongoing when we passed (as of November 2019). There were a few one-way portions with loose gravel, dirt roads and mud. It felt really remote with unli-twisties. There were not a lot of establishments, gas stations or places to eat along the way.

trip to baler

This route is more prone to landslides during the rainy season. We had to wait for an hour while a portion of the road was cleared, so it was dark by the time we made it to Baler. We left Dingalan at around 2:30 pm and arrived in Baler at 7:00 pm (with 45 mins waiting time for the road to be cleared).

trip to baler

Where to Stay in Baler

Nature green forest resort.

There are a lot of accommodations to choose from in Baler from high-end resorts to small homestays and inns depending on your budget and location preference. See my separate guide on where to stay in Baler . On our first night, we stayed in Nature Green Forest Resort along Cemento Beach, about 10-15 mins ride from the main town proper and Sabang Beach.

trip to baler

This family-owned resort is located in a forested area where the river meets the sea. The property has a private beach area and a garden, outdoor huts, a floating cottage, and kayaks and standup paddleboards available for rent. It’s relatively near Diguisit Beach and rock formations, which is an ideal spot for sunrise viewing.

trip to baler

They also have a treehouse room (ideal for couples and solo travelers) and a small swimming pool. You can cook or have food cooked here. The spacious standard rooms (good for 5-8 pax) come with a queen bed, double deck bed, hot and cold shower & TV.

trip to baler

  • Address: Nature Green Forest Resort, Cemento Beach, Brgy. Zabali, Baler, Aurora
  • Contact number: 0917-5960205
  • Published rates: The treehouse room for 2 was not available, but the owner gave us the room good for 5 pax (normally P3800/night) for just P2000/night since there were only 2 of us. You can also book via Agoda .

trip to baler

There are a lot of places to eat and drink in Baler, mostly along Sabang Beach and Buton Street. Top recommendations include Kubli Bistro, Bike King’s Kitchen, Gerry Shan’s (Eat All You Can), Hungry Surfer at Bay’s Inn, Yellow Fin Bar & Grill and Charlie Does Cafe. Check out my separate guide: Food Trip: Baler .

Day 3: Dipaculao & beyond

  • Start point: Nature Green Forest Resort, Baler
  • End point: Charlie Does Hotel Motel Inn, Baler
  • Route: Cemento Beach, Baler-Casiguran Road and back
  • Type of road: Coastal roads, mountain roads , no traffic
  • Stops: Diguisit Beach, Dicasalarin Point, Ampere Beach & Rock Formations, Tanawan Point of Dinadiawan, Porto Novo Dinadiawan Dipaculao
  • Travel time: 3 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 131 km

The top things to do in Baler include taking surfing lessons at Sabang Beach, visiting the Museo de Baler and Aurora Heritage houses, crossing the Hanging Bridge or hiking to Ditumabo Falls. But riders will probably just want to spend half a day or the whole day riding to explore towns further North from Baler.

trip to baler

If you have your own transport, you can easily ride to Ermita Hill, Diguisit Beach, the port area, and get a great view of Dicasalarin Cove right before reaching the Pag-Asa Station.

trip to baler

After lunch at the bicycle-themed restaurant Bike Kings in the town proper, we spent the afternoon on a leisurely road trip towards Dipaculao, passing the Ampere Beach and Rock Formations.

trip to baler

Dinadiawan in Dipaculao is a good destination from Baler because of its beautiful white sand beach and proximity, just an hour away from Baler by motorcycle.

trip to baler

If you start your ride in the morning, you can ride all the way to Dinalungan, Casiguran and Dilasag (and visit Casapsapan Beach) and go back to Baler or opt to stay overnight in the area. Dilasag is 145 km or 3 hrs from Baler. However, there are less dining options and tourist spots in the Northern towns compared to Baler. We’re planning to save our visit there for another road trip.

trip to baler

Where to Stay in Dipaculao

Porto novo dinadiawan.

Located about 1 hour from Baler, Porto Novo Dinadiawan in Dipaculao offers 18 fully airconditioned rooms and 3 nipa-style cottages right in front of a stretch of white sand beach facing the Pacific Ocean.

trip to baler

Guests can cook in the common kitchen buying fresh days catch of the day from local fishermen. There’s a kiddie play area, and other activities like volleyball, frisbee, etc. available. The area here is very serene, so guests can enjoy just communing with nature. Aside from overnight stays, the resort also accepts day tour guests (entrance fee: P100/head) with tables for rent and tent spaces available.

trip to baler

  • Address: Porto Novo Hotel Dinadiawan, Dipaculao, Baler-Casiguran National Highway, Aurora
  • Contact: 0925-8773322 / TM: 0997-2334566
  • Rates: P2,300 for nipa huts (good for 2), P3,000 for Superior rooms (for 2), P3,800 for Deluxe Rooms (for 4 pax), P7,000 for family room (good for 10 pax)

trip to baler

Because of a typhoon forecast expected to hit Casiguran, we decided to just stay in Baler again for another night to be safe. We capped our last night by walking along the stretch of Sabang Beach and pizza, beer and live music at Kubli Bistro.

trip to baler

Hotel Motel Charlie Does Inn

Aside from running a cafe and surf shop, Charlie Does also runs a small hotel / motel inn with a few container van type rooms right behind the cafe. Rooms are ideal for solo travelers and backpackers who want no-frills accommodations near the restaurants along Sabang Beach.

trip to baler

While the room we got felt a bit small, the cafe and garden area are nice places to hang out. Charlie Does usually serves Baler Brew (a locally brewed honey wheat beer), but it was out of stock during our visit. The beer is also available in kegs at Costa Pacifica.

trip to baler

  • Address: Hotel Motel Charlie Does Inn, Buton Street, Baler, Aurora (in front of Costa Pacifica)
  • Contact number: 0906-2027959
  • Rates: P1,500 – P2,000 (double bed aircon room good for 2) with plated breakfast. Discounts applicable for Lean season (June to September) and Weekdays (Sunday to Thursday).

trip to baler

Day 4: Baler to Manila

  • Start point: Charlie Does, Baler, Aurora
  • End point: Quezon City
  • Route: Nueva Ecija – Aurora Rd/Pantabangan – Baler Rd/Pantabangan – Canili – Felipe Vergara Highway – McArthur Highway – Plaridel Bypass road – F. Viola Highway – Del Monte-Norzagaray Road – Quirino Highway – Blefast – Mindanao Ave – Commonwealth Ave. – C5 – Katipunan Ave. – CP Garcia
  • Type of road: National Roads, diversion roads, mostly flat, high traffic in cities
  • Stops: Sabang Beach, Balete Eco Park (Millenium Tree) in Maria Aurora, Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija
  • Travel time: 8 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 250 km

After the complimentary breakfast at Charlie Does (vegan and vegetarian food), we decided to head back to Manila passing the Pantabangan Route.

trip to baler

Pantabangan Route

Compared to Bongabon, the Pantabangan Route is considered safer because of the flatter terrain. This doesn’t have as many twisties, and there are more gas stations and eating places along the way. However, since it’s the usual route of buses, vans and private cars heading to Baler, you’ll encounter more vehicles on the road which can cause delays especially if you travel during holidays and long weekends. If you pass this route, you can make stopovers at the Millennium Tree , a famous Balete tree in the town of Ma. Aurora next to Baler as well as the scenic Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija.

trip to baler

To make the most of your trip and cut down on travel time, it’s best to leave early in the morning. Because of our photo op stops, we got to the main highway at noon and encountered a lot of trucks and heavy traffic most of the way. We left Baler at 9:30 am and got to Quezon City at 5:30 pm, for a total time of 8 hrs on the road.

trip to baler

Trip Summary

As usual, getting back to Manila traffic after enjoying the beautiful open roads and refreshing scenery sucked big time especially along the highway in Nueva Ecija, Bulacan and Quezon City (on a Friday payday), but I’m really thankful for the mostly good weather during our ride and that we got home safely. It only rained once during our ride on our way to Dingalan, so stops were minimal.

trip to baler

P.S. Special thanks to MotoWorld Philippines for my new safety riding gear including the LS2 Breaker full-face helmet in Matte Titanium & Taichi riding gloves which I used during this trip. I really appreciated having a visor to combat the dust, rain, wind, and bugs splattering at full speed. I definitely feel more protected with this touring helmet and the IXON riding jacket .

trip to baler

Overall, it was a very satisfying motorcycle trip with rewarding views and great food. Riders who want to test out their endurance sometimes do “Baler balikan ” rides or just overnight trips, but to maximize the travel time and for first-timers who want to combine the trip with sightseeing and have more time to enjoy the beach, it’s best to spend at least a couple of nights there.

trip to baler

We spent 4 days & 3 nights on this ride (1 night in Dingalan, 2 nights in Baler), but I wouldn’t have minded staying another night further north. At least we now know the route and where to stay next time when we explore the rest of Northern Aurora, Quirino and Isabela province.

trip to baler

  • Starting odometer: 8,747 km
  • End odometer: 9,597 km
  • Total: 850 kilometers

What Are Furniture Anchors and Do You Need Them?

A major earthquake is devastating. But even a minor one can cause significant damage, as I found after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake struck where I lived.

When the shaking starts, items can spill out of unlocked cabinets, and the refrigerator door can open by itself and dump food onto the floor. But that isn't the worst of it. Bookshelves , tall cabinets and heavy items like microwaves can fall, posing a real danger to anyone who happens to be nearby.

That's a good reason to make anchoring your furniture to the wall part of your earthquake preparedness priorities. Here's an even better one: Child safety, according to Allen Baler, CEO and co-founder of 4Patriots .

"Nearly 75% of the over 5,000 annual injuries from furniture tip-overs involve children," says Baler. "As a dad of three young daughters, I can't stress enough how important it is to anchor your furniture to the wall."

Daniel Kilburn, founder of Emergency Action Planning LLC and author of Family Urban Disaster Planning , agrees.

"When it comes to securing your home, it's not just about being prepared for emergencies," he says. "One important aspect that often gets overlooked is anchoring your furniture and wall hangings. It may seem simple, but it's a crucial step in ensuring your home is as safe as it can be."

What Are Furniture Anchors?

Straps or brackets that secure furniture to the wall. They prevent tall or heavy furniture , like bookshelves and dressers, from toppling over, whether from a natural disaster or an adventurous child climbing on it.

They also prevent heavy appliances like microwave ovens from "walking" along a countertop and falling to the floor during periods of heavy shaking.

Furniture anchors aren't expensive. "For less than $20 and a quick trip to the hardware store, you can get everything you need to anchor your furniture," Baler says.

Installing anchors is easy. But for earthquake protection, it's important to attach them to wall studs and not the drywall, so there's a bit of preparation involved.

Types of Furniture Anchors

When shopping for furniture anchors, you'll come across these types.

Furniture cables

Furniture cables consist of two independent brackets with eyeholes that allow you to connect them with a strong, flexible nylon or braided steel connector. You screw one bracket to the wall and the other to the back of the furniture. Then you thread the connector through the eyeholes and fasten its ends to secure the furniture.

The connector usually has a turnbuckle, tab or similar quick-release mechanism so you can disengage the anchor to move the furniture.

No-drill anchors

Avoid making holes in your furniture and wall by choosing no-drill anchors with adhesive-backed brackets. Intended for baby-proofing lightweight furniture, they can't hold as much weight as screw-on brackets. You'll need something stronger for earthquake preparedness.

Furniture straps

Furniture straps are like furniture anchors, only with the brackets permanently connected to the ends of adjustable straps. To install one, you screw the brackets to the wall and the furniture, then adjust the length of the strap.

Corner brackets

In lieu of furniture cables, you can also use steel corner brackets to secure items like bookshelves that sit flush against a wall. They're cheap, but you have to fasten them to the sides or top of the furniture, so they remain visible.

Wall Anchors

Kilburn reminds homeowners heavy wall hangings also need to be anchored. You won't find specific anchors for these. Most importantly, he says, make sure whatever anchor you use to hang anything on a wall can support its weight during an earthquake.

What's the most secure way to hang a heavy object, like a large mirror? Drive threaded anchors into a wall stud. When placement dictates mounting something between studs, toggle bolts are the best call. They anchor against the back of the drywall and won't come loose during periods of heavy shaking.

Who Needs Furniture Anchors?

Any household with small children should have furniture anchors.

As reported on AnchorIt.gov , a new government regulation effective Sept. 1, 2023 mandates new safety standards for furniture manufactured after that date that's 27 inches or taller. Specifically, clothing storage furniture like dressers must pass three stability tests and come with a warning about the dangers of tip-overs. It must include an anchoring kit and an admonition to homeowners to use it.

Anyone living in an earthquake zone needs them, too. And maybe the rest of us as well.

"In a world where both the frequency and cost of natural disasters are escalating," Baler says, "furniture anchoring is not just a child safety measure, it's a household necessity."

Kilburn adds: "Preparedness is more than just having a plan; it should become a part of your lifestyle. Make anchoring a regular part of your home safety routine and rest easy knowing you've taken another crucial step in fortifying your sanctuary."

Best Furniture Anchors

Make sure whatever anchors you choose can handle the weight of whatever you're anchoring. For really heavy furniture like a bookshelf loaded with books, choose furniture cables with screw-on brackets, heavy-duty straps or corner brackets.

Before you purchase cables or straps, check the label for the load the anchors can support. Choose a product that can support at least 400 pounds for items like sofas that can move around during an earthquake but aren't likely to tip. Choose anchors that support 1,000 pounds for heavy bookshelves, large dressers and other items that could fall over.
