We went on a whim and wasn't disappointed. Great friendly staff, good selection of food. Hubby wanted fish and went for platter. I had the trio of kebabs. Both were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed. Look forward to the next visit. We would highly recommend

Well located pub and the staff are friendly. It is fine for a drink but the food is very average and overpriced. I would suggest that the menu is reconsidered! There is a nice outdoor area with commanding views and plenty of tables.

Travellers Inn

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

I have visited this pub for drinks many times over the years but not for a long time. Having recently seen the pub's social media feed following the relaxation of the recent Covid lockdown, I decided it would be a good place for only my... second indoor pub meal since the crisis began. This proved to be good choice. The decor was much more airy and fresh than I remember. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and had a good understanding of the Covid Safe guidelines. I ordered a pint of local Brown Cow ale from the local Bradfield Brewery which was well kept. I was tempted by the All Day Breakfast at Ā£11.50 which was very hearty and filling. Everything was nicely cooked and presented. It is great that a traditional rural local like this still exists. So many similar places are turned into private residences or else get taken over by the national chains, get expanded and lose their character. I will try to visit this pub again in the near future. More

This weekend was the first time that my wife and I have been out for a meal since the lock-down. Our daughter and her boyfriend booked us a surprise family meal at The Travellers Inn Oxspring. The pub had organised a family day, to celebrate... a belated "Mother & Fathers Day". After shielding for so long we were a little apprehensive, but the landlords had excellent safe-guarding in place. Needless to say the food was first rate, and the gift of a home crafted miniature Gin & Whiskey was a nice parting gift. Staff were very helpful and polite, we felt as though we were out with an extended family as everyone was so friendly. Highly recommend a visit and a meal. Remember to book in advance to avoid disappointment. More

A couple of weeks ago Ruth from the Travellers popped a flyer through our door saying that they were doing takeaway meals during the second lockdown. Knowing how good Ruth's cooking or cheffing skills are we thought we would give it a try. we rang... up earlier this week and spoke to Jack, placed our order, he said when you arrive sit in your car by the door and your meals will be ready on time. and guess what, at 6.15 pm, parked near the door and our meal came out spot on time - thank you. Gina had Chicken Tikka and rice. I had Spicy Spanish Beef Stew. both meal were excellent and to cap it all we had a 2 pint carton of Belgium Blue beer. Thank you very much Ruth, Jack and the team. See you soon and keep smiling. Peter & Gina. More

Well, it takes a lot for me to leave a bad review, but after tonightā€™s awful experience I feel new customers should be aware before entering this establishment, not only for the lack of quality fresh food, but the disgusting attitude of the landlady. We... both ordered creamy garlic mushrooms that were basically mushrooms in condensed soup with a some garlic added to try and fob these off as creamy garlic mushrooms, we were asked if they were ok and we felt these were not even edible to eat as we donā€™t usually complain, we said this quietly and in a nice manner and the waiter said no problem and took them off the bill. We then werenā€™t very hopeful that the main course would be any better which sadly it wasnā€™t, the stew looked anaemic and was tasteless and I could not even chew a piece of the meat, this was served in a large frozen Yorkshire pudding with lumpy mashed potato, which was also tasteless, the girl then came up to ask if everything was ok with the main course and I said not really but left it at that and then within seconds the landlady appeared raising her voice telling us to leave if we were not happy, this is no way to treat customers when they have a genuine complaint, we then decided to leave after being talked to in this manner, as we were walking out the landlord asked what the problem was and we explained nicely and quietly for the landlady to then start again in front of all the other customers, this is no way to run a business and treat new customers who will never return even for a drink due to her despicable attitude, isnā€™t even worthy of 1 star to be honest, never met such a vile woman with a attitude like this in all the years of eating out. More

It is exceedingly infrequent - in fact in 4 years it is the first and only time we have felt it appropriate to suggest that customers take their business elsewhere - we value every customer who enters our premises and always hope that their experience... More

The burgers were not cooked properly and raw inside I ate half of mine to find it was very pink raw and stone cold. The quality of the burger was very low and commercially bought in like the onions rings and chips. The chips was... very greasy. My overall opinion is that nothing is home made in this establishment. Don't waste your money coming here for a premium meal. Who puts a burger in a tea cake and smothered in too much cheese of a low grade quality too greasy. The attitude of the staff was disgraceful when I was asked to be more specific about the raw meat in the burger. The customer is always right and unfortunately the arrogance of the staff in the establishment will be there downfall. More

Dear Samantha & Jessica - I have already replied to you both on Facebook but it would appear that to give us a nasty review once is not sufficient for you and you wish to be even more unpleasant this time around so I am... More

My husband and I had visited the Travellers previously on two occasions. The first time my husband had had the beef pie and I had had Lasagna. The beef pie had been ok and my lasagna acceptable. The second time we visited I had one... of my favourite dishes, Chicken Caesar Salad. Part way through the meal, I thought I was going to vomit, I ate some salad which tasted like eating earth. When I looked further at my plate there was quite a large amount of mud in the salad. We complained to the waitress, and was told that the salad was brought in and was just put on the plate as it was as it was supposed to have been pre-prepared. Whoever had prepared the plate had not watched what they were doing as it would have been almost impossible to miss. there was so much. The Travellers refunded the payment and offered me something else but the thought of eating something else there for me was not an option. Today, we decided to give the Travellers a second chance as it was one of the few places were we could eat outside, but still be under cover, and still be able to take our dog with us. We were initially very disappointed to hear that the menu had changed and the Inn was no longer serving main meals outside. They eventually stated that we could order the pie and lasagna but that this would be a one-off. We waited, as they had explained, for about 30 minutes for our meal to be FRESHLY COOKED but, under the circumstances, this was not a problem. When our meal came, however, we wished we hadn't bothered, there was something soft in the middle of the Lasagna which I think was supposed to be white sauce, there was very little mince, the layer of cheese on the top was a cheap and nasty english version and to top it all it was cold. The consistency of the sauce and the fact that it was cold, lead me to believe that it had been frozen and just warmed through. It was definitely not value for money for a few sheets of pasta at Ā£14.95, even though it came with garlic bread and salad, which of course I did not order after my previous experience. As much as I tried to eat the Lasagna I couldn't; it made me feel pretty sick. My husband had ordered pie and mushy peas. The peas were a solid mass on the plate and were inedible. My husband complained to the waitress but she wouldn't come out to inspect the food. Instead a lady believed to be the Manager, came out to see us and apologied, taking the plates away and returning our money. Unfortunately returning the money did not help the fact that it was, by this time, too late in the afternoon to go somewhere else to eat. Being prepared to refund the cost is ok but does not alter the fact the customers are seemingly regularly being served inedible food and being told that they are short staffed should not be given as a reason or excuse. More

As the landlord and landlady of this establishment we have taken the decision not to reply to each part of your review regarding the food but instead to make one or two overall comments. We were not at the premises when this happened but have... More

0 stars given- hands down the worst food Iā€™ve ever seen and tasted in my life. I wouldnā€™t even feed it to my dog!! The first meal was very raw and pink the burger was sent back and they recooked. They couldnā€™t even manage this... the second meal was actually worse. It was less cooked than the first. The waitresses attitude absolutely stinks and her managers should book her onto a course in customer service. We ended up going to another establishment to actually eat something. This meal was no value for money. The cost and quality of the ingredients very poor. Head in to Penistone centre or one of the many establishments around our local area that actually care about their customers. I have never sent a meal back ever until today. It was totally unacceptable. More

Initial thoughts were very positive. But. Letā€™s start with the positives. Welcome was cheery, informal and relaxed. The fact they serve Farmers Blonde amongst other well kept cask ales was a bonus. The menu had sufficient variety for most tastes and dietary requirements and one... steak and ale and one steak and Stilton were duly ordered to be eaten in the well kept beer garden. Both pies were very tasty and filling although some of the meat in mine had dried in cooking so was a bit fibrous and tough. Iā€™d still say it was a good pie as the seasoning and taste were spot on. Had there been a check back I wouldā€™ve said the chips were bloody awful bordering on inedible unless youā€™d just left a concentration camp. Thereā€™s a saying ā€œDonā€™t spoil a ship for a haporth of tar,ā€ transposed into a culinary context ā€œDonā€™t serve yesterdayā€™s recooked frozen chips to save 10p on a Ā£30 lunch.ā€ I appreciate times are hard but when a website suggests the kitchen staff love cooking please donā€™t let them display this love by cooking poor quality chips repeatedly to near charcoal. Iā€™m sure this was an aberration but donā€™t let it happen again because the pies were worth coming back for. More

I am glad you liked the pies - on the subject of the chips I would firstly say that we never serve frozen chips unless you ask for French Fries! The potatoes are bought from a local farm and at this time of year the... More

Following the easing of UK lockdown restrictiins I had the pleasure of visiting here once again for a well deserved and much needed treat in a "home from home" enviroment. This evenings experience didnt fail to impress, yet again! Travelling from West Yorkshire it has... always been worth going "the extra mile" to be able to experience and indulge in what I can only describe as a real treat. With a warm welcome and service to die for I had a night to remeber. The quality, presentation and portion sizes were generous and of extremly high quality and well worth every single penny, in fact could command higher premiums for the outstanding quality! The food was served in a timely manner, was warm and full of flavour. The staff are always incredibly helpful and are never far away, ready to serve and deliver a high quality service. I had the pleasure of chatting with the landlord and landlady who are super friendly, professional and always provide a warm and welcoming enviroment. Huge thank you to all the staff who made it such a fabulous experience yet again and never ever fail to deliver what can only be desribed as an outstanding dining experience! I will be back! in fact I made sure I booked again for next week before leaving! More

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to give us such a good review

We saw a flier advertising takeaways and promptly ordered Sunday lunch for 3 of us today. We collected the meals at the requested time in a Covid compliant way. What a treat - roast beef and turkey, roast and gorgeous mashed potatoes, 3 veg, beautiful... gravy and all the trimmings. It was delicious. Thank you to the team at The Travellers. More

We were looking to try this for the first time but unfortunately we were sadly disappointed. The pate was bought in and served in large ramekins which clearly showed it wasnā€™t homemade and not good. The fish cakes, agin commercially made and not quality, and... the burger not appealing at all. The staff seem friendly enough and so we didnā€™t complain but even the wine wasnā€™t great. We paid the bill but would not recommend this at all for food or wine. More

At every stage of your visit to our little pub, you were asked if every thing was 'OK' by the waitress who served you. You stated that it was, What does suprise us is that you ate all your food in question that you stated... More

Iā€™m absolutely over the moon to have visited here. We have recently moved to the area and this pub is the type of pub everyone wants on their doorstep. A massive, friendly, warm welcome from ever member of staff who passed our table. Drinks are... crisp, cold and regular (staff always asking if you are ready for another when your glass is 2/3 empty!). The food was delicious too. Proper good pub food. The menu has loads of choices and I said how on earth can you make all these different choices. In my mind I thought it canā€™t all be good?! Do you know what though.... it was! Every option we had! Starters, mains and desserts! Well done team Travellers what a super friendly, lovely pub. More

Thank you for your fantastic review

This was our first visit and won't be the last. The staff are so friendly and helpful. My elderly father wanted steak pie which wasn't on the menu. There was pigeon pie but he didn't want that! When the lady serving us overheard that she... immediately checked with the kitchen and a steak pie was found. That is service!! Everything we had was well cooked and well presented. The servings are generous. The treacle tart was to die for. All in all a very good meal helped by superb service. More

Thank you for your fabulous review - we really appreciate you taking the time to do this for us

1st visit to this pub, turned up without booking. The staff were great really friendly and managed to squeeze us in. The adults had the Sunday lunch which was excellent really enjoyable and generous, kids had sausage, chips and beans which was way above usual... kids meal standard for a pub. Itā€™s rare nowadays that you go to a pub and actually feel welcome and appreciated for your patronage, staff where attentive and helpful and couldnā€™t do enough for us. More

The takeaway meals are exactly the same as the meals you'd usually get when you eat in. A lot of places their takeaways are lacking but the Travellers were perfect. very generous portion sizes and good quality food. Will be ordering from again , can't... wait to try their takeaway Sunday dinners! More

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him ā€” but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we canā€™t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"Itā€™s incredibly scary. You know, you just donā€™t know what the next day may bring ā€” you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, itā€™s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. Itā€™s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Four teens in crash ends with one dead in Cottle Co.

Fatal crash generic image

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - A one-vehicle crash in Cottle Co. left one teen dead and three teens injured this weekend.

Around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, a Chevrolet Silverado driving east on County Road 404, about 2 miles east of Paducah swerved off the roadway for unknown reasons.

The vehicle ended up in a ditch along a fence line, rolling over, striking the fence and hitting a power pole in the process. When the car stopped rolling, it was resting on its roof.

A 13-year-old passenger was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The 14-year-old driver and the two other 15-year-old passengers were transported to Children Regional Medical Center for their injuries. All four involved teens are from Paducah.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basilā€™s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

things to do in Moscow in one week

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russiaā€™s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the countryā€™s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Unionā€™s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russiaā€™s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscowā€™s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920ā€™s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. Itā€™s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit youā€™ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If youā€™re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. Itā€™s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, thereā€™s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakovā€™s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakovā€™s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as thereā€™s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Ole Miss DE Cedric Johnson Selected by Cincinnati Bengals in 2024 NFL Draft

Ole Miss Rebels defensive end Cedric Johnson has found his professional football home.

  • Author: John Macon Gillespie

In this story:

Ole Miss Rebels defensive end Cedric Johnson has found his professional football home, being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, being claimed with the No. 214 overall pick.

Johnson is the second Rebel to be selected in the draft on Saturday, joining defensive back Deantre Prince who was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round.

Johnson's career at Ole Miss was a fruitful one, and in 2023, he recorded 40 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hurries in 12 games with after receiving the Chucky Mullins Courage Award for the team.

He also put on a show at the NFL Combine as one of three Rebels who were invited to participate in the event. He posted an official time of 4.63 in the 40-yard dash, and he also recorded a 1.61 10-yard split, a 10-foot, 2-inch broad jump, and a 38-inch vertical that was among the top 5 for defensive linemen and linebackers.

NFL.com had some praise and areas for improvement for Johnson in preparation for the draft this weekend, and you can read the analysis below.

"Johnson passes the eyeball test with flying colors, and there will be teams who gravitate toward his NFL body type and play strength," NFL.com wrote. "With that said, his tape fails to consistently hit the mark. He's strong at the point of attack and will set firm edges but needs to become more intent on ridding himself of blockers and making more plays.

"As a rusher, he has strong hands and some tools to work with, but he needs to develop go-to moves and counters and attack the pocket with greater urgency. Johnson has upside but might never be more than a solid edge backup if his rush doesn't improve."

Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow

Red Square Moscow

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russiaā€™s victory over Napoleonā€™s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, itā€™s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

Itā€™s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of PĆØre-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

Itā€™s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the IzmaĆÆlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! šŸ˜‰

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and CĆ©zanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscowā€™s business center, much like Parisā€™s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. Itā€™s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 mĀ² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather ā€œhuman scaleā€, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Four Travelers Problem

Four roads on a plane, each a straight line, are in general position so that no two are parallel and no three pass through the same point. Along each road walks a traveler at a constant speed. Their speeds, however, may not be the same. It's known that traveler #1 met with Travelers #2, #3, and #4. #2, in turn, met #3 and #4 and, of course, #1. Please show that #3 and #4 have also met.

(Three or more straight lines are said to be in general position if no two are parallel and no three are concurrent.)

Hint Advice Solution

Ken Ross' Solution. Rob Fatland's Solution. Stuart Anderson's Solution. Michel Cabart's Solution.

Ceva and Menelaus Meet on the Roads

The problem can be generalized to an arbitrary number of roads, N>3, which makes it even more striking: Assume the first two Travelers met and have also met all the remaining N-2 fellows. Prove that the remaining ones all have met each other.

Perhaps another solution to consider may be more naturally phrased and reveal more information about the motions involved. Draw a line connecting Travelers 1 and 2, and see how it varies through time. Because of general position of the travelers paths and the constancy of their speed, we see that Travelers 3 and 4 must also be on the line as it travels given that 1 and 2 meet them. Now general position gives that 3 and 4 must also meet, since the line intersects their paths.

Perhaps this argument needs to be made more precise, but on first investigation, I see no flaw. What do you think?

If two travellers set out from a common point along straight lines, travelling at constant speeds, then the ratios of the distances travelled in a given time is the ratio of their speeds. So lines drawn at various times joining their positions will be parallel. But is this not Thales theorem?

It is well known amongst sailors that if two ships are travelling such that the angle between them is constant (that is, the angle between the line of travel of one, and the line of sight of the bow of the other ship), then the two ships are on a collision course. This is really useful if you are a little sailboat and there is a big lake freighter in lake Ontario, for instance. I see this 'rule of thumb'as Thales' theorem in another form.

Bill chipman palouse trail description.

The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail stretches 7.1 miles through the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse region, offering a convenient, paved connection between Washington State University and the University of Idaho.

The trail follows a piece of corridor from the former Union Pacific Railroad (constructed by the Columbia & Palouse Railroad in 1885), which transported passengers from Colfax to Moscow. The last passenger train ran in 1957. Now, the wide, mostly flat pathway—a respite from the area's many hills and valleys—accommodates non-motorized users of all types, with additional trail connections at either end.

Along the route from Pullman to Moscow, 13 original railroad bridges cross Paradise Creek. Opportunities abound to spot birds and other forms of aquatic wildlife thriving in and near the water. Trail users will also find emergency phones, restrooms accessible for people with disabilities, benches, bike racks, and interpretive signs describing the history, agriculture, and ecology of the region.

The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail overlaps with the Pullman Loop Trail for approximately 1 mile, starting near the Chipman trailhead at Bishop Boulevard. From here, you'll cross Paradise Creek to a cirque of benches and an interpretive station at Birdhouse Depot. Magpies are common; the stream also provides a habitat for hawks, falcons, and more than 100 other bird species.

As you travel farther along the gentle uphill grade, you'll come to the next point of interest, a giant grain elevator. A greenway buffers you from the four-lane highway to Moscow, as do the lovely waysides with interpretive signs and benches along the corridor. Grab some water at Neil Wayside near Pullman. This dry, unsheltered path is often windy heading eastward.

The trail culminates at Farm Road (Perimeter Drive) in Moscow. Continue east on the 2-mile Paradise Path through the north and east edges of the University of Idaho campus and up Paradise Creek to the Moscow city limits. Here, you can connect with the paved, 16-mile Latah Trail to Troy, Idaho.

Parking and Trail Access

There are two spots for designated parking along the trail. At the western terminus in Pullman, there is parking at the gas station across from the trailhead, 1455 SE Bishop Blvd. Halfway between Pullman and Moscow, there is parking at the Sunshine Trailhead.

Although there is no designated parking at the eastern terminus, the trail ends here in downtown Moscow where there is ample public parking.

See TrailLink Map for more detailed directions.

Bill Chipman Palouse Trail Reviews

travellers four lane ends

Flat, yes, butā€¦.

Id rate this trail a C- overall for a couple of reasons. The biggest drawback is the overfilled cracks which have been poorly managed. These bumps are hard to take on a rigid frame road bike and they are frequentā€”as in every few yards. The continual jarring diminishes the riders experience overall. Secondly, as of late August 2023, the bridge near Pullman is out. Some local kids decided to party there and burned the bridge. There is a detour that takes you onto Highway 8, but thatā€™s never enjoyable to ride a busy highway. I wouldnā€™t recommend going out of your way to ride the trail, bu rid you happen to be in the area and want to do a short ride itā€™s okay.

Great trail for biking between Pullman and Moscow

I only bike this trail, when I want to go to Pullman for some reason and prefer to bike there rather than drive. I don't choose this trail to bike on for the scenery, because the Latah Trail between Moscow and Troy is a lot nicer. But I do like this trail a lot. While you are parallel to the highway, which isn't a big highway by any means, it's not as loud and intrusive as you might think.

Easy commuter trail along the creek

This trail is perfect for an evening workout or leisurely ride. It is a slight but noticeable downhill from Moscow to Pullman, the two end points of the trail. Also there can be a strong wind from the SW. So keep these two facts in mind when take off. The trail is well marked, wonderfully maintained, smooth surfaced with great views of the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse. It also connects to the Paradise Trail system in Moscow and through to the Latah Trail to the city of Troy. Good for roller blades too.

Not much traffic noise

"Although the trail does parallel the 4-lane road, we have to say that with the wind blowing, we barely heard any traffic noise. There is a nice buffer of green space between the trail and road on most of the pathway which was visually appealing along with providing a ""comfort-zone"" for riding. The green hills and wildflowers added to the beauty. Overall, we had a great ride on this path. Thank you Rails-to-Trails!"

"The Chipman Trail is an amazing 8-mile trail between Pullman, WA, (WSU) and Moscow, ID (UI), through the rolling Palouse. It is pristinely paved with minimal traffic and winds its way along a stream for a short time, past solo trees and a few horses or cows depending on the season. It has beautiful purple, yellow and white wildflowers along with high wheat fields at the peak of the season. It's a fabulous journey east and can get a bit windy for those heading West, which makes the journey even that more exhilarating. I've left Washington state for Washington, DC now and I must say one of the things I miss is my daily blade on the Chipman Trail. Enjoy and say ""Hi"" to the Palouse for me! :)"

Old Arbat, Moscow

  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of the Old Arbat?

  • The Arbat district has existed since the 15th century, and was first home to palace artisans and a military garrison. The main street of this area was renamed a number of times, but was always known as ‘Arbat’ by the Muscovites
  • State reforms and devastating fires caused the radical transformation of the Old Arbat into a prestigious residential street for Moscow’s aristocracy in the 18th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Old Arbat was populated by the intelligentsia and bustled with life
  • Stalin’s regime muted both the atmosphere and historical appearance of the Arbat. But later state initiatives sought not just to restore the Old Arbat, but to revive it into a thriving hotspot of Moscow

Arbat Street

Photo on Wikipedia

The Old Arbat is one of Moscow’s most atmospheric historical streets, and holds an important place in Russian culture and history. What emerged as a garrison and humble settlement for palace artisans then transformed into a prestigious aristocratic street, and later became a melting pot for members of the Russian and Soviet intelligentsia, some of whom immortalised this unique street in their work. Today, the Old Arbat – known by Muscovites simply as ‘Arbat’ – is a bustling tourist hotspot, and the ideal place for an afternoon’s amble to soak up the atmosphere, culture and history of Moscow.

History of the Old Arbat

Arbat Street

  Photo on Wikipedia

The Old Arbat takes its name from the historical Arbat district of Moscow, which is situated to the west of the Kremlin. In the 15th century, this area was an open space beyond Moscow’s city boundaries, where the ancient road connecting Moscow, Mozhaisk and Smolensk began. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, as Moscow was restructured under Grand Duke Ivan III, this area began to be developed as a settlement for artisans who worked at the palace stables. The main street was named Vozdvizhenka, though it was known by the local people as ‘Arbat’.

Did you know? There is much debate over the etymology of the word ‘Arbat’. Two of the most common theories stipulate that it comes from the Arabic word for suburb, ‘rabad’, brought to Moscow by Eastern traders, or from the Turkic word for cart, ‘arba’, as a cart workshop was located in the area.

The Old Arbat acquired its modern dimensions by the end of the 16th century, beginning at the Arbat Gates of Moscow’s White City fortress walls (today the Arbatskie Vorota Square on the Boulevard Ring road) and extending westwards to another gate in the earth and wood rampart encircling the city (today the Smolenskaya Square on the Garden Ring road). This area in between the two ramparts, which encompassed the Arbat, was known as Skorodom, meaning ‘hastily-built houses’. Throughout the 17th century, the left side of the Arbat remained a community of palace artisans, and on the right side stood a number of Streltsy military garrisons, which had been established by Ivan the Terrible in the mid-1550s.

Did you know? In 1658, Tsar Alexei renamed the Old Arbat ‘Smolenskaya’, but this never caught on.

The abolition of the Streltsy at the end of the 17th century, followed by two devastating fires in 1736 and 1812, brought about the transformation of the Old Arbat into a residential street for Moscow’s most illustrious inhabitants. The garrison land became the property of the nobility, and the burnt-out structures were rebuilt with one or two storey Empire-style and Classical-style mansions surrounded by small gardens. From the mid-1700s to the late 1800s, many of Moscow’s most eminent noble families resided on or near the Arbat, within their number the Tolstoy, Dolgoruky, Sheremetyev, Golitsyn, and Trubetskoy families.

Did you know? Famous residents of the Arbat included Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Lev Tolstoy, and Anton Chekhov.

Towards the end of the 1800s, the Arbat was evolving from an aristocratic residential street into one of Moscow’s most vibrant communities. Members of the intelligentsia from all walks of life –academics, composers, government officials, writers – moved to the Arbat and lived and worked in close proximity. The Old Arbat thus became a melting pot of ideas and cultures, and the excellent businesses and cultural, historical, and academic institutions which were founded on the street contributed to the street’s rich and unique atmosphere.

Must-see spots on the Old Arbat

To make the most of your stroll down the Old Arbat, we’ve compiled a list of interesting sights to look out for.

House No.2/1

Praha Restaurant

This house was home to the restaurant ‘Praga’ which provided entertainment for the Arbat’s most distinguished residents. Its former patrons included Tolstoy, Chekhov and Repin. Later, the famous tavern and dining room of Mosselprom (the Soviet organisation in charge of Moscow’s food and drink industry) was located here. The Praga restaurant is still open today, and is one of Moscow’s oldest restaurants.

Arbat 9

This apartment building was built in the style of Eclecticism at the end of the 19th century. It housed the famous bakery of Filippov in pre-revolutionary times, then a café frequented by writers of the Soviet era, including Vladimir Mayakovsky, Andrey Bely, Sergey Yesenin, Alexander Blok, and Boris Pasternak. Today, it is home to the National Cultural Centre of Ukraine.

Did you know? House No.14 was once rumoured to be a haunted house. Upon inspection by the police, it turned out that the ‘ghosts’ were in fact beggars living in the basement.

Houses No.23 and 29

Arbat 23

These are luxury apartment blocks and hotels built in the style of Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century by architect Nikita Lazarev. They have retained their original features even throughout the Soviet period – a rarity for buildings on the Arbat. No.29 is particularly beautiful - look out for its intricately forged balconies and the unique designs adorning each floor. The former director of the Bolshoi Theatre in the post-revolutionary period, Vladimir Lossky, lived in house no.29.

House No.26

Vakhtangov Theatre

The Vakhtangov Theatre is located in this impressive grey and red building designed in the style of Soviet Classicism. The theatre was rebuilt between 1946-1947 after suffering a direct hit from a bomb during the war, and has been operating for nearly a century.

Did you know? On the side of house No.17 is a huge 19x17-metre mural of Marshal Zhukov, Hero of the Soviet Union and the most important Soviet commander during the Second World War, who led the Battle of Stalingrad. The mural was painted in 2015 to commemorate 70 years since the end of the war.

House No.33

Arbat 33

This building housed one of Moscow’s first free maternity hospitals. During the Soviet period, Alexey Losev, one of the most important philosophers of 20th century Russia, lived here for nearly half a century. The Library of the History of Russian Philosophy and Culture was subsequently established here in the memory of Losev and his wife, the philologist Aza Takho-Godi.

House No.35

Arbat 35

This house was constructed in 1913 by architect Valentin Dubovskoy as a luxury apartment building and elite school. Behind the building’s severe Neo-Gothic façade is currently located the House of Actors and part of the Ministry of Culture.

House No.37

Tsoy Wall

This is the only surviving 18th century house on the Arbat, which belonged to Count Vasily Bobrinsky, the grandson of Catherine the Great and Count Grigory Orlov. The wall of the house which extends alongside Krivoarbatsky Lane is known as ‘Tsoi’s Wall’, as since the death of legendary Russian rock musician Viktor Tsoi in 1990, the wall has been decorated with messages and art in his memory.

House No.43

Arbat 43

Famous Soviet bard Bulat Okudzhava lived here as a young boy. Okudzhava immortalised the unique atmosphere of the Arbat in poetic songs such as Pesenka ob Arbate (Little song about the Arbat). On the corner of house No.45 and Plotnikov Lane is a monument to Okudzhava.

House No.44

Arbat 44

This beautiful mansion with a Baroque façade was owned by the great-grandfather of Ivan Turgenev. It later housed the Moscow Dental School, and an NKVD safe house during the Soviet period.

House No.51

Arbat 51

Soviet author Anatoly Rybakov lived in this building from 1919 to 1933, before being exiled to Siberia until 1937. Rybakov is best known for his dissident book, Children of the Arbat, which was written in the 1960s but not published until 1987, when it became one of the first publications of anti-Stalin literature in Soviet Russia.

House No.53

Arbat 53

This is the only surviving residence of Alexander Pushkin, and the Memorial Apartment of A.S. Pushkin is located here. Pushkin spent the first few months of his married life in this house in 1831. Later, the building was home to the younger brother of Tchaikovsky, poet Marina Tsvetaeva, and then a Soviet-era theatre run by Vsevolod Meyerhold and Vladimir Mayakovsky. Opposite the house is a statue of Alexander Pushkin and his wife, Natalia Goncharova.

House No.55

Arbat 55

In this building is located the Memorial Apartment of Andrey Bely. The poet spent his childhood living in this house on the Arbat, surrounded by academics and members of the Moscow intelligentsia who were his neighbours. The museum is part of the A.S. Pushkin Museum.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

At the far end of the Arbat stands the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers . The monolithic 172-metre structure was built from 1948 to 1953 by architects Vladimir Gelfreykh and Adolf Minkus, and has many features of English Gothic architecture. An enormous crest of the USSR remains on the building’s façade.

Essential information for visitors Smolenskaya is the nearest metro station to the western end of the Arbat (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Arbatskaya is the nearest metro station to the eastern end of the Arbat (Restaurant ‘Praga’).

Mission Moscow : A Conversation with Evgeny Kozlov

' src=

Mr. Evgeny Kozlov, Deputy Head Mayor of Moscow Government and Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, who has come to the city to attain BLTM, the annual prestigious travel event at the Leela Ambience Convention Centre, Delhi spoke with TW Editor Anirban Dasgupta on his vision and goal with the all-new tourism initiatives in Moscow.Ā Ā

The bond between India and Russia has a long history of culture, literature, love, and of course politics. But recently, there has also been a lot of talk about Gastronomical tourism. Any personal experience with this?

My personal take on the bond between India and Russia stems from my recent experience of trying authentic Indian cuisine in Moscow. I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy flavours of the Curry dish I tried and it left a lasting impression on me. This made me appreciate the cultural exchange between our two countries even more. I believe that Moscow, being a culinary hub, is a great place for people from all over the world, including Indian visitors, to immerse themselves in our rich history and culture. It’s a unique experience that brings people together and showcases the diversity of the gastronomic universe. Moscow has a thriving food scene with various international cuisines to explore, from Chinese to South African and Latin American. This culinary diversity reflects the open-mindedness and curiosity of the Russian people when it comes to trying new types of food. Moscow truly has something for everyone, and I encourage Indian tourists to come and indulge in this gastronomic journey.

Evgeny Kozlov

Ā  How optimistic are the post-pandemic recovery figures?

After the Covid-19 pandemic, we have witnessed a remarkable recovery in tourism in Moscow. In fact, we have been able to restore 90% of the pre-pandemic tourist flow. In the first half of 2023, almost a million foreign tourists visited Moscow, with over 600,000 of them arriving during the summer season. Among the non-CIS countries, China has led the way in terms of tourist traffic, followed by Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and India. Prior to the pandemic, India’s tourist flow was steadily growing at a rate of 12-15% annually. Although we faced challenges during the pandemic, we have now put in place all the necessary conditions for a successful recovery. Moscow is known for hosting numerous international exhibitions, forums, congresses, and conferences, attracting approximately 3.6 million business visitors in the past year alone. Among these visitors, India ranks third in terms of foreign business tourists in Moscow. To further promote tourism, we have initiated the MICE Ambassadors training program in India, which aims to assist Indian businesses in exploring opportunities and selecting relevant events in Moscow.

Ā  Can you please share your vision for future tourism development in Moscow?

Thank you for asking this question.Ā I have a multi-faceted vision for the future tourism development in Moscow.

Firstly, I believe that tourism should provide a personal and authentic experience for each individual. Therefore, customization of experiences is crucial. For business tourists, we aim to offer special infrastructure facilities that cater to their specific needs and requirements. We are closely collaborating with infrastructure providers to ensure seamless experiences for those visiting Moscow for business purposes. On the other hand, when it comes to leisure or family tourists, we recognize the importance of providing a support system and guidelines for those traveling with their families, especially children. We are working with museums, theatres, and restaurants to customize their services and products to cater to tourists of all ages, including children. Furthermore, I envision rearranging tourism in Moscow to encourage visitors to delve into the history and heritage of our country. A significant part of my tourism goal is to motivate and inspire the youth and younger generations to travel to Russia. This involves providing affordable pricing for accommodations, entertainment, museums, and other attractions.

We are already constructing tailor-made infrastructure that specifically targets the young generation in Russia, and by next year, we plan to extend and promote these offerings to international young visitors as well. By rebranding the image of Moscow as a destination for longer stays, relaxation, and enjoying various facilities, we aim to change the perception that it is merely a transit or stop-over city. Lastly, the beautiful weather in Moscow during the summer months provides an opportunity to create delightful memories for tourists. I want every visitor to experience the sunshine, green landscapes, parks, cafes, restaurants, swimming pools, and sports facilities that Moscow has to offer during this time.

In summary, my vision for the future of tourism in Moscow revolves around creating customized travel experiences for every type of traveller.

How do you prioritize sustainability and responsible tourism practices in the development of business tourism?

Evgeny Kozlov

How easy or difficult is it to get a Visa for an Indian Tourist at present?

Acquiring a Visa for Indian tourists has become easier with the introduction of the e-visa system. Since its launch in August 2023, more than 30,000 tourists have already utilized this system. The e-visa offers several advantages over traditional visas, such as avoiding the need to visit consulates or embassies. The application process only requires a digital photograph and a scan of the passport data page. The e-visa has a validity period of 60 days from the date of issuance, with a maximum stay of 16 days in Russia. This convenient and streamlined process is available to citizens of 55 countries, including India. Indian tourists are currently ranked third in terms of business travellers from outside the CIS countries visiting Moscow.
