As Heart Prepares to Launch Its First Tour in 5 Years, Ann Wilson Says Band Is Hoping to Write New Music

Five years after its last concert tour, what Nancy Wilson calls "the actual Heart ," with herself and older sister Ann Wilson, is beating its way toward the road - and looking toward making some new music, Heart's first since its Beautiful Broken album in 2016.

"The thing that we really hope to achieve is to maybe write some more stuff together," Ann tells Billboard . She adds, however, "We don't have plans for that right now. We don't really plan too far in the future; we're not calculating like that. We're just gonna do this tour and see what comes. But I think if a song comes out of a situation, it'll be a real good one, 'cause it'll be authentic. It's just a matter of me and Nancy getting our heads around that."

There is, however, one new song that Heart's been working on - "Roll the Dice," written with longtime collaborator and Lovemongers groupmate Sue Ennis with an eye toward including it in the Royal Flush Tour shows that begin April 20 in Greenville, S.C. Ann says it's still "a work in process," which Nancy began when she and Ennis got together "just for songwriting purposes. A lot of times we text with each other and we get on concept ideas and title ideas and lyric ideas. When she finally came to visit me at my house in northern California, we spent about a week together, and we actually recorded some demos."

There are no plans for "Roll the Dice" yet beyond playing it at shows, but Nancy says she's also been trolling through the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group's vaults, listening to unreleased material with the thought of releasing some of that in the near future, too. "There's a couple unfinished things I'd like to finish off with Ann and Sue," she says. "There's one really, really cool song called ‘Sweet Deceiver,' but the words were never right, so we never recorded it properly. I think I might want to finish that song; I've been trying to think of new chorus lyrics ever since I heard the demo. I would love to write some new stuff, too.

"If we have a song or two that comes out of Heart, that would be really great. These days, it's kind of like one song at a time, but you can still do a whole album, which is cool. I love albums," she adds. "When I can put on an album in its entirety, in the sequence it was intended, that's the best to me. The new Kacey Musgraves [ Deeper Well ] is really great. I love the Post Malone album, Austin . Taylor Swift's stuff is amazing. So we'll see."

In the meantime the Wilsons are happy to have Heart headed back out on tour, with a lineup of mostly new members; only guitarist Ryan Waters was part of the group's last tour, in 2019, while he and his Tripsitter bandmates - guitarist Ryan Wariner, guitarist-keyboardist Paul Moak, bassist Tony Lucido and drummer Sean T. Lane - have worked with Ann during the interim. The sisters are planning covers-free setlists this time out, focusing on what Nancy says are "songs that mean a lot to a lot of people, that are the Heart songs they know and love that are also the soundtracks to people's lives."

"What I really love about Heart and miss about Heart is the flexibility, musically, inside of the band itself," she notes. "If we wanted to, we could be a Led Zeppelin cover band. Or if we wanted to, we could be a total comedy routine band. We could do all kinds of amazing covers of stuff, but this time, it's going to be all us."

Ann adds, "We're really trying to keep it pure. The whole idea is to do something we have not done before … just a whole set of Heart music from different eras of the band."

That immersion, meanwhile, has led to some unexpected perspective on Heart's nearly 50-year recording career.

"I think I was always so busy performing the songs and trying to just be excellent on stage that I never really sank into the true meaning of some of the songs until now," Ann explains. "The other day at rehearsal they had been working out ‘Dog and Butterfly,' and I sat down and it was so beautiful and the sentiment was so great and beautiful and tender, and I just teared up right off, even before I sang anything. It was awesome."

The sisters acknowledge that there are still some differences in their individual views of what Heart is and should be, but they've found enough common ground to put the band on tour for the remainder of 2024 in North America and Europe - with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening and Randy Bachman's BTO, as well as three stadium dates this summer supporting Def Leppard and Journey.

"We're talking. We're fine together. We just felt it, so why not?" Ann says. "The common ground is that we both want it to be excellent and we both want it to be absolutely Heart. We just basically put it together and said, ‘Let's go!'" Nancy - who performed with her own Nancy Wilson's Heart during 2022 and 2023 - adds that "there's so many things, circumstantially, since 2019 … a lot of it's just family drama and unavoidable, and just other stuff people wanted to do besides Heart. So we were off doing our own things for a little while, and there was also this little interruption called the pandemic.

"And, y'know, I just turned the big 7-0 [on March 16], so it's like, ‘Whoa … If I ever want to get a chance to do this amazingly fun thing one more time, now is the time.'"

That said, Nancy, for one, would not mind if Heart's resumption lasts an even longer time than is currently planned.

"I think this will carry us at least through the year, if not beyond. My fingers are crossed," she says. "There's no telling if it'll run like a well-oiled machine, but I think once we get started it'll go smooth and steady and rock like the well-oiled machine it knows how to be, and that's the fun part. The shows can be so elating and so transcendent, and the electric energy is unbelievable. So that's what we're here for.

"We've built this train," she adds. "We've got the wheels on and we're putting it on the track, and we'll see how fast things thing can go - and how far it can go."

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

It was a great performance by one half of the Wilson Sister Act. Ann rocked the house and played for 2 hours, which was great because I felt like I got my money's worth. The venue was hot but none of that seemed to matter once she took the stage. No opening act, no gimmicks or special effects, just Ann Wilson and her band. She sang a mixed set consisting of rock and blues. Her voice is still in top form and she knows how to rock! And her wardrobe change was not too diva-ish. Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears eat your HEARTS out! Ann Wilson is the First Lady of rock! Long may she and sister Nancy reign!

The first time I saw "Heart" in concert back in 1977 (I was 14) I was completely blown away by Ann Wilson's amazing vocal ability. 40 years, 15 Heart concerts and one "Ann Wilson Thing" concert later I am still in awe of Ann Wilson. After seeing over 135 concerts, I believe Ann Wilson is far and above the best female lead vocalist of today. She can belt out every note in "Crazy on You" now just as she did 40 years ago. That is NOT an easy song to sing, believe me. Ann Wilson ROCKS!

I've seen heart quite a few times and they always do well.

I think that Ann Wilson not only performs with Heart but with heart. She always gives her all to her performances. This was a nice mix of old, new, and cover songs. Many done in a different style but all done from a place deep inside.

Vocally she is still a tremendous artist and has a great stage presence and connects with the audience.

She started directly on time, few performers do. When you go to an Ann Wilson concert, expect her to start at least a minute early. The only disappointing thing was Barracuda was her first song. I wish she would've saved it until the end. Overall, the entire performance was good. She's older so her voice isn't what it used to be. 6/10.

Amazing show! Ann showcased her amazing vocal range and ROCKED the Stand in York, Pa! Her band was amazing as well. Thanks for coming to Pa.! I hope she comes back and shares her amazing voice with us soon!

Ann Wilson Says Heart Will 'Definitely' Return For Anniversary Tour In 2023

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

July 20, 2022

ann wilson of heart tour 2022

Heart 's Ann Wilson has confirmed that she and her sister Nancy plan to reunite in 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band.

Ann was asked about the upcoming milestone in a recent interview with Grammy.com .

"Yes, we do," she replied, of Heart's plans. "I'm not at liberty to say exactly what they are yet because it's such early days, but sure. It will be next year. And we're doing a thing. Definitely. We're still formulating it now."

Ann has been on tour this year with her solo band, supporting her latest album, Fierce Bliss , while Nancy been performing Heart material with her own band.

While the sisters weren't able to come to terms on a Heart tour this year, both have expressed optimism that they would be able to iron out something for next year.

"Nancy and I are OK with each other," Ann told Classic Rock magazine this spring . "We just have different ideas for what Heart should be, and we haven't figured out a compromise yet."

Nancy explained back in February that she and her sister couldn't agree on what line up to take with them on the next Heart tour. She said the band had a tour offer, but had to turn it down because Ann wanted to reshuffle the lineup. Their compromise for 2022, was to do what each of them wanted and come out with a plan for next year.

Ann Wilson  is adamant that Heart will one day reunite onstage, but first there's a few wrinkles to iron out.

The 71-year-old rock legend spoke with ET's Rachel Smith at Smoakstack Studios in Nashville and opened up about what's keeping Heart from officially getting back onstage. She also spoke about her upcoming solo album, Fierce Bliss , which drops April 29.

But first, the reunion. Wilson tells ET the topic around reuniting is a revolving conversation.

"Yeah, we're always in talks about that," Wilson admits. "Right now, we don't see eye to eye on who would be in the backup band, who would be onstage with us. I want these guys and Nancy [Wilson], right? And she's got a whole other bunch of people out there on the West Coast that she wants, so we're just working on [it] ... but Heart will play again for sure."

For the uninitiated, the rock band was conceived in the late 1960s in the Pacific Northwest and underwent various name changes before officially becoming Heart in 1973. The following year, Wilson and her sister, Nancy, joined the group to become the first female-fronted hard rock band. The group had just over two dozen members who came and went over the course of its storied run, but the core of the group -- Michael Derosier, Howard Leese, Steve Fossen, Roger Fisher and the Wilson sisters -- achieved commercial success in just about every decade, sold more than 35 million records worldwide and saw its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. The band has been on a hiatus for several years now.

To this day, Wilson's still most fond of the band's 1976 single "Crazy on You," off its debut album, Dreamboat Annie . The sisters will celebrate five decades of Heart next year. But, in the interim, Wilson's keeping busy with her own projects, which includes the  An Evening With Ann Wilson of Heart & The Amazing Dawgs tour. The 27-city tour kicks off May 4.

"Greed" -- from her new album,  Fierce Bliss  -- will be one of the new tracks fans will get to indulge when she goes on tour, and the origin of the song has a familiar story. In short, Wilson says she wrote it from an angry place, and if that sounds familiar, it's because she followed that exact same process for Heart's 1977 hit, "Barracuda."

Wilson wrote "Barracuda" in anger following her record label's publicity stunt gone wrong. According a 2018 story in Rolling Stone , the band's record label planted a full-page ad in the venerable magazine that framed the sister duo "as an incestuous gimmick."

"That pissed us off," Wilson told the magazine at the time. "It went against everything we were trying to initiate, trying to invent -- and the fact that our first time in [ Rolling Stone ] had that lascivious implication. For [this promoter] to imagine us together in an incestuous lesbian relationship -- the sleaze factor really dawned on me in that moment. Those lyrics were written by my true nature, in true rage."

So, it's worth asking -- what led to the new single, "Greed"?

"Well, I don't want to [give] too much information here," Wilson said, "but it was a marital thing. In this moment of extreme trust and vulnerability, my husband told me I was being too greedy. And I went, 'OK.'"

Triggered by anger, Wilson flowed her emotions to paper and out came "Greed."

"'Greed' is more global than that," Wilson later explained. "If you look at what's going on in our country, all the division and the blitz and all this kind of stuff, it's all about money. Who wants to dominate, you know? It's all about greed. I can understand how [greed] is part of human nature. It's the animal part of our nature, maybe, where we always want more, more, more. And I think most people have gone through that in some way in their lives, whether it be drugs or alcohol or shopping, sex or whatever it is. You know, they just want more."

Rock trailblazer Heart reunites for a world tour and a new song

Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

NEW YORK -- Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson's “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson's “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

And for everybody, including the band."

The band's Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Nancy Wilson says that's all in the past.

The Wilson sisters broke rock's glass ceiling in the '70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she'd still like to shine.

CONCERT REVIEW: One Part of HEART Rocks Like the Whole Thing – ANN WILSON Lights Up the Florida Night (June 17th, 2022)

ann wilson of heart tour 2022

Legends never grow old, they simply watch the world change around them and occasionally change with it, or at least that’s the lesson that the audiences that have witnessed the spring tour of Ann Wilson on the heels of her most recent solo album “Fierce Bliss.” It’s a fitting title for an album that embodies the fire and the beauty that has endured throughout this rock icon’s tenure in the studio and live circuit since the mid-1970s, two attributes that have not been blunted in the slightest in the decades that would follow. In the aftermath of the Covid-19 lockdowns, the appropriately dubbed Rite of June mini-tour has now reached the latter half of said month, and a stop in the Fort Lauderdale area on the 17 th of said month would bring a few interesting twists on a set that could be best described as a full dose of nostalgia with a side order of present day pizzazz, all communicated with the level of fervor that one would expect of an artist half Ann ’s current age.

It goes without saying that this elite veteran of hard rock speaks the language that goes with the art in a truly boisterous and powerful manner, but the degree that this has endured as she enters her early 70s is nothing short of amazing. Along for the ride is a level of control and versatility that goes with an extensive career spanning nearly five decades, as demonstrated by the highly varied repertoire of selections by Heart , Led Zeppelin , Jeff Buckley , Queen , The Who and her own solo work that graced this Friday night event. One would naturally be remiss not to give credit to her highly competent instrumental collaborators, which would include guitarist and co-producer of her latest album Tony Bukovac , all of whom performed in the most exemplary of fashions as they set out to recall the plethora of stylistic niches that typified all of the bands from yesterday and further back that either inspired Ann ’s career or coincided with it at some point between the 70s and 90s.

Though this mini tour has tended to feature a similar collection of high grade slabs of rock nostalgia, one of its most potent charms is the regular re-ordering and reshuffling of the deck, imbuing a sense of old school spontaneity to go with the lion’s share of throwback selections. Beloved Heart banger “Magic Man” would find its way into a slightly earlier part of the set than previous evenings as the fourth number, arriving to heavy cheers and elation as a faithful and near flawless execution of the 1975 breakout hit. Similar reactions were elicited with the entry of other mega hits from the same era in the galloping rock beast “Barracuda” and the intricate and infectious fanfare of “Crazy On You”. Ann ’s voice would really be put to the test with the contrasting presentations of the heavily subdued Jeff Buckley song “Forget Her”, the wildly dynamic power-balladry of Queen ’s “Love Of My Life” and the jagged-edged grit and grandeur of The Who ’s “Love Reign Over Me” , but the end result was a resounding triumph that seemed all but totally effortless.

Yet when all was said and done, the final word would prove to be the most potent part of this highly engaging performance. Opting to substitute out a closing favorite from prior appearances on this tour, Led Zeppelin ’s “Black Dog” would find itself replaced by the even better known rock radio staple “Stairway To Heaven” , performed with an arrangement that perfectly mirrored even the choir of recorders featured in the acoustic first half of this prototypical power ballad. Ann ’s performance was the obvious center of attention with frequent ornamentation of Robert Plant ’s original interpretation of the song in tow and no shortage in the power department despite being at the tail-end of a fairly long set, but the rest of the band proved highly animated and filled the roles of Page , Jones and Bonham adequately. It was an all too familiar refrain for all in attendance, but realized so proficiently that it could have easily silenced any naysayers quoting the famous “No Stairway” joke from Wayne’s World were any to have been in attendance.

Arguably the greatest take away from this stellar occasion was that one is never too old to bring down the house, and retirement is only a viable option when one is heading down for the dirt nap. Though roughly 90% of what was heard hearkened back to a bygone era and rode the nostalgia wave to the proverbial finish line, it should be noted that entries from Wilson ’s aforementioned 3 rd solo album such as the punchy rocker “Greed” and the haunting ballad with a rough edge “Black Wing” were extremely well received despite a lack of out of tune voices insisting on singing along with every last note. The Ann Wilson legacy may be firmly rooted in the glory days of the 1970s and to a lesser extent in her subsequent association with various players during the 90s, but the tree that is her career is still branching out and bearing leaves in the present. Whatever may lay ahead, this is an elder purveyor of the art that is still treading onward, and all who have been privileged to witness the new paths being beaten can only hope for more.

Ann Wilson’s Busy 2022: New Album, ‘Fierce Bliss,’ Tour

ann wilson of heart tour 2022

“Greed,” says Wilson in a Feb. 8 press release announcing the album, “is that thing in our animal nature that makes us want more. Whether it be money, sex, power or ecstasy, it fires our craving! It happens with all of us. When you turn around and catch yourself making decisions because you want the money, or because you’re caught in the headlights of glory, well, those are greedy moments.”

Wilson smashed boundaries with her band Heart, the eight-times platinum, 35 million-plus-selling Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trailblazers who formed in 1973.

ann wilson of heart tour 2022

“I had the idea for the Queen song ‘Love of My Life’ as a duet, so I just tried to picture who would be ‘the male angel’ that would sing the other part of it,” explains Wilson. “I thought how great the song would be if it was stripped down and just sung with soul, and it had to be Vince Gill because he’s got that voice, that soul.”

Wilson continues, “I’d known Warren Haynes from Gov’t Mule for a while. We’d written a couple songs together with Gov’t Mule playing, and those rounded out the record. So all of a sudden, where there was no record before, suddenly I had eleven cool songs that I really liked.”

Of the track “A Moment in Heaven,” Wilson says, “It’s one of those anti-Hollywood screed things, the meat grinder of the music image maker machine and what it feels like to be on the inside of that. All of a sudden, it’s ‘happening’ on all thrusters, you’ve got a number one record and everyone’s pouring champagne telling you how much you ‘deserve this.’ You’re in heaven! But then the cruel reality comes down… what’s the next one? Can you follow that? It’s all about the short-lived glamour and ecstasy of being successful in the rock business.”

Ann Wilson:

There is a calm, serene spirituality about Ann Wilson in 2022 which instantly draws you to her. She feels like a warm, wise someone who has seen enough bullshit to know how to avoid it calmly, and someone who is at peace with whatever she needs to be at peace with. Perhaps that is why the soul (and, indeed title) of her latest album, Fierce Bliss , offers such universally entertaining, engaging, honest and safe harbor from these unpredictable times. It is classic rock comfort food of the finest ingredients, carrying a richness and light that allows you to escape into timeless nostalgia, 11 perfectly weighted and selected songs ranging from Wilson’s own co-penned originals to breathtaking covers and collaborations. Indeed, Fierce Bliss is not just an album for fans of Ann Wilson and Heart, it is an album for everyone seeking a lavish ticket out of the sharp edges of an increasingly fraught society. Fierce Bliss also marks perhaps the first time in her illustrious career that Ann Wilson   has truly felt the wind in her wings, something which might seem a strange statement given her pioneering history.

One of the premier hard rock vocalists of all-time, Wilson smashed boundaries with her band Heart, the 8-times platinum, 35 million-plus selling Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trailblazers who formed in 1973. During a decades-long career, Wilson rode the roller-coaster of fame, fortune and madness, learning both joyous and hard, hard lessons along the way. In recent times, she’d managed to find a band out on the West Coast that she toured with, and as the pandemic started in March 2020, Wilson found herself with time to absorb both her life and her future.

“When I wanted to get together and write, I contacted them all,” Wilson starts. “Because of the pandemic they were sheltering in place, so we couldn’t get together in the same room which is how I like to do it. I’ve tried that technique of recording and writing where you pass files around via emails, and it just never seems cohesive to me, there’s not a vitality to it. So I figured I’d wait a little bit and find people out here on the East Coast.”

A road-trip with her husband (all aboard a rented tour bus with protocols observed!) saw Wilson in the Bay Area in the summer of 2020, where she ran into the legendary veteran ‘artist’s lawyer’ Brian Rohan; it was the catalyst for Fierce Bliss’s creation.

“Getting to know him, talking to him and his belief in me made me go, ‘The hell with this sitting around the house, I’ve always wanted to record at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios*, I’m just going to go do it, I have some songs!’” Wilson states firmly. “Brian recommended people to me that knew people in Nashville, so I met these guys like [famed Nashville session guitarist] Tom Bukovac and Tony Lucido at those Muscle Shoals sessions. I’d never met them before, and they really inspired me. It was like a big door opening. Put it this way, we’re now a band.”

With the musical chemistry organically established, Fierce Bliss came together quickly.

“It grew from that first session at Muscle Shoals,” furthers Wilson, “I had originally intended to go in, record a few songs and see what I had, but it just took on this life. Jim Zumwalt, the attorney, got a hold of it and said I should look at a few other people. We went into Sound Stage in Nashville, where Kenny Wayne Shepherd came in and played on a couple songs. He was a whole other influence coming in, he just played his butt off, and with the gospel singers and everything else coming together, the whole project just started to grow. I’d known Warren Haynes from Government Mule for a while, we’d written a couple songs together with Government Mule playing, and those rounded out the record. So all of a sudden, where there was no record before, suddenly I had eleven cool songs that I really liked.”

Fierce Bliss is first and foremost a collection of universal folk tales through a rocking lens for all walks of life. “For me a good song starts out with the story,” Wilson explains. “It’s always the story, and then it’s the singer, how the person puts it across, the melody. If those two things are in line, then all the rest happens.” The stories Wilson tells and chooses to reinterpret are ones we’ve all experienced, and her ability to craft empathy within that spectacular voice renders them timeless tales. Take “Greed.”

“Greed” is that thing in our animal nature that makes us want MORE,” Wilson declares. “Whether it be money, sex, power or ecstasy, it fires our craving! It happens with all of us. When you turn around and catch yourself making decisions because you want the money, or because you’re caught in the headlights of glory, well, those are greedy moments. I think people who claim to have made every decision from a root of pure idealism, and never done anything dark or greedy, is lying. I think everybody who ventures into especially the music industry hoping for a career with big success, ends up making these Faustian bargains at some point even if only briefly. It’s an aggressive song and I think I write best when I’m angry.”

Following on from that is “A Moment in Heaven” which carries a specific point of reference for Wilson but could easily apply to anyone who has seen their career suddenly bathed in a bright beam of glory before the spotlight is abruptly moved elsewhere. “It’s one of those anti-Hollywood screed things, ” Wilson explains, “the meat grinder of the music image maker machine and what it feels like to be on the inside of that. All of a sudden it’s ‘happening’ on all thrusters, you’ve got a number one record and everyone’s pouring champagne telling you how much you ‘deserve this.’ You’re in heaven! But then the cruel reality comes down…what’s the next one? Can you follow that? It’s all about the short-lived glamour and ecstasy of being successful in the rock business.”

There is a deeply spiritual air about Ann Wilson 2022, and both “Black Wing” and “Angel’s Blues” show different facets of that soul and ethos.

““Black Wing” was the first song that I wrote during the pandemic when we were in lockdown. We live on the St. John’s River [in Florida], so for months I was looking out the window at this big river, all the birds and everything. I started to feel so isolated and cut off from the rest of the world that these birds started to take on a new dimension for me, I began to anthropomorphize them. That’s when I wrote “Black Wing”, just wishing I could be up there too able to go everywhere.”

“With “Angel’s Blues” Warren had given me this version of Government Mule playing that with no vocals. So I dreamt up this idea of an angel, someone who’s passed, who is not quite all the way gone yet, they still feel the blues of attachment to the life on earth that they left. They’re looking down at all the trials and tribulations, the completely powerful feeling of being in love, and they miss that. They’re gone, so they’re saying goodbye to all those earthly pleasures, but they’re also free because now they can live again and again. It’s a blues song on steroids.”

Wilson has always enjoyed bringing new life and verve to classic songs, and with Queen’s “Love of My Life” and Robin Trower’s “Bridge of Sighs” she has helped fashion definitive versions of each which stand toe-to-toe with the originals.

“I had the idea for the Queen song “Love of My Life” as a duet, so I just tried to picture who would be ‘the male angel’ that would sing the other part of it? I thought how great the song would be if it was stripped down and just sung with soul, and it had to be Vince Gill because he’s got that voice, that soul. “Bridge of Sighs” in my opinion is the best blues song ever written. That’s really saying something because it’s the vastness of the blues world, but this song is about true existential dread. It isn’t just you’re hurt because you lost your boyfriend or girlfriend, you’re on the edge of the abyss. I like stuff that goes all the way, I’m one of these people that halfway is not good enough. So with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, one of the coolest monster guitar players around, it just made so much sense, and he tore it up. One of the most rewarding things for me as a singer, to not be hurried. The best singers are the ones who can sing ballads and really make it work, because you don’t have to be a genius to be a rock shouter or sing rock songs. But that ballad, where it’s slowed down or stopped and you’re center stage with the spotlight? Every little nuance is important, and I think that’s what “Bridge of Sighs” was for me.”

To cap it all, the album artwork comes from the mind and hands of celebrated fantasy artist Roger Dean, who aside from his work in fantasy art is also renowned for his Yes sleeve artwork. “When I came up with the title Fierce Bliss, something in my soul just started thinking about those Yes covers like Tales From Topographic Oceans, and I just thought that would be perfect. We found him and I think you can tell from the look of the work it’s done with joy.”

Wilson will soon be hitting the road with her new band, and make no mistake, she’s a performer at heart thus her excitement is palpable. “Tom Bukovac on guitar, Tony Lucido on bass, Sean T Lane on drums, and Paul Moak on keyboards/other guitar/ mandolin, are the guys that’ll be out with me on tour, and we’re doing a mix of stuff from Fierce Bliss, a few other songs we like, and there will be Heart songs too. It’s going to be a proper evening, not real flashy and splashy, but with musicianship on this level, believe me it is going to be quite amazing.”

Ann Wilson seems to be more comfortable with herself (and her art) than ever before with both Fierce Bliss and the band she’ll be touring with. “I think that for someone who’s been through as much as I have, and has lived to tell the tales, it’s okay to share my experiences,” says Wilson sagely. “ I’ve heard from a lot of younger musicians and listeners too who have thanked me for staying around and for just keeping upright, just making it through, making the concessions once but not twice, and being able to live through it all with dignity.”

Dignity and inescapable, prodigious, intoxicating talent. Fierce Bliss is a timeless story which speaks to all seasons, just like it’s architect. *[in Sheffield, Alabama, on the US National Register of Historic Places, home to the Muscle Shoals Sound and host of many noted artists such as the Rolling Stones, Cher, Canned Heat, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart and Herbie Mann]

Rock trailblazer heart reunites for a world tour and a new song.

NEW YORK – Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

And for everybody, including the band."

The band's Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Nancy Wilson says that's all in the past.

The Wilson sisters broke rock's glass ceiling in the '70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she'd still like to shine.
