How to Travel From Tokyo to Hokkaido: Best, Easiest, Cheapest Ways to Get to Sapporo Compared

Discover the easiest, cheapest routes from Tokyo to Hokkaido. Sapporo , Hokkaido Prefecture's capital city, is where many tourists make their base. Home to the Sapporo Snow Festival , many other seasonal events and sightseeing spots , and with great access to the rest of Japan's northernmost island, it's a perfect place to visit. So, what is the best way to get from Tokyo to Hokkaido? Though the two areas are around 820km apart, Tokyo and Sapporo are actually well connected to each other. Whether you favor speed, budget, the route and its sights, or even a specific vehicle, we've got you covered.

1. Fast & Convenient: Tokyo to Hokkaido (Sapporo) by Air

2. ride the hokkaido shinkansen: tokyo to hakodate via bullet train using your rail pass, 3. tokyo to sapporo ferry: crossing to hokkaido, 4. driving to hokkaido: tokyo rental car options, do your research, and enjoy your hokkaido trip.

1. Fast & Convenient: Tokyo to Hokkaido (Sapporo) by Air

When it comes to speed and convenience, flying from Tokyo to Hokkaido is the optimal choice. Over 80 daily flights connect Haneda and Narita airports to New Chitose Airport , completing the journey in just 1.5 hours. Tickets typically range from 20,000 to 30,000 yen, but early bookings or flexible travel days/times may offer more budget-friendly options.

You can conveniently travel from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo by bus

You won’t need to leave the airport to access the JR train network, which has convenient rail access. The Airport Express is a train that arrives at Sapporo Station in 33 minutes, departing at a frequency of 5/hour during the day, so you won’t need to wait long. Since many commuters use it, if you want to secure a seat, you can wait for one of the following trains, or reserve ahead (for an additional fee).

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

The bus, instead, takes about 50 minutes from the airport to central Sapporo . It can store large suitcases, and every passenger has a seat. If you are staying in the areas of Odori or Susukino, or places not far from the city's center, the bus will probably conveniently stop nearby.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Embark on a remarkable journey from Tokyo to Hakodate via the renowned Hokkaido Shinkansen. This high-speed bullet train offers a comfortable ride through Japan's scenic countryside. If you use the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which opened in 2016, you will arrive at Sapporo Station in about four and a half hours, when traveling from Tokyo Station to Shin- Hakodate Hokuto Station. From Hakodate , Sapporo is a further three and a half hours by express train. Or you can easily connect to other parts of Hokkaido, making it an ideal choice for travelers looking to explore beyond Sapporo . The price ranges around 15,000 yen, not including seat reservation, but your Japan Rail Pass may cover it. In total, it will take around 8 hours from Tokyo Station to Sapporo Station.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

From the Shinkansen windows, you can enjoy the scenery changing from the heavily metropolitan Tokyo to the nature -rich ones of Tohoku. One of the most distinctive areas you will pass through is the Seikan Tunnel between Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido, which extends to the bottom of the Tsugaru Strait. Although you won’t be able to see anything in the dark, it’s exciting to picture that you are actually traveling on the seabed. From Shin- Hakodate -Hokuto Station, transfer to the express train and enjoy the sights of Hokkaido’s most scenic spots, like the landscapes in Onuma, Mount Komagatake, and Funka Bay, and take in the nature and streets of Hokkaido until you arrive in Sapporo . If you have a lot of time, you can take advantage of discounted tour tickets and stop in various towns in Hokkaido and Tohoku. The JR homepage supports multiple languages, and it’s easy to navigate so that you can plan the perfect railway trip for you.

3. Tokyo to Sapporo Ferry: Crossing to Hokkaido

For a more leisurely and picturesque journey, consider taking the ferry from Tokyo to Sapporo . This delightful maritime experience allows you to soak in the beauty of the sea as you sail towards Hokkaido. There are two cruises a day from Oarai Port in Ibaraki Prefecture (two hours driving from Haneda and Narita Airports) to Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido. Travel time by boat is approximately 18 hours. The price varies depending on your room, but if you want to watch your budget, it’s about 10,000 yen for a shared room and 12,000 yen for a cabin. There are also hotel -like rooms equipped with a bath, toilet, and refrigerator, where you can spend your time with your family and friends. There are also facilities like public baths, where you can bathe while gazing at the ocean, restaurants where you can taste elaborate dishes, and a vast bridge, which all guarantee you won’t be bored during your cruise. You can also find nice towels and origami that will be perfect as souvenirs.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

There is a convenient direct bus from Tokyo Station to the Oarai Ferry Terminal, but you can also drive there, so if you were thinking about renting a car and enjoying the sights on the way, this would be a good option for you (especially if you are traveling with children). You can arrive from Tomakomai Port to Sapporo city center in just over an hour, and you can sightsee around the city easily if you have a car. When booking online you can find round-trip discounts and other deals. The website supports English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

  • Phone: 0120-489850 (From a mobile phone/PHS/IP phone, call 029-267-4133 (Oarai Ship Reservation Center), or 0144-34-3121 (Tomakomai Ship Reservation Center))

4. Driving to Hokkaido: Tokyo Rental Car Options

If you crave the freedom of the open road, driving from Tokyo to Hokkaido in a rental car is the perfect adventure. Embark on a road trip that allows you to set your own pace, making stops at picturesque towns and breathtaking viewpoints along the way. While the journey requires more time compared to flying or taking the Shinkansen, the flexibility and scenic routes offer an unforgettable experience. There are three major routes: The Pacific side, the Sea of Japan side, and the inland, all of which run for roughly 1,000 km, but the landscapes are different and unique, making them irresistible to people who love to drive. Since you will have to cross the Tsugaru Strait, don’t drive for too long hours, and give yourself a couple of days. You can also rent a car via a system called “drop-off,” which allows you to rent a car from Narita or Haneda Airport , and return it at New Chitose Airport . There are several companies that offer multi-lingual service, and convenient options, and discounts, so do some research beforehand to find what best suits you.

The way you travel will change your trip. Before you leave, do your research, study the various options, and choose the best method for you. Also, make sure to look into discount tickets and other offers, and have fun! Text by Minna no Kotobasha

Tokyo to hokkaido by ferry: all the fun you can have aboard the sunflower.

Tokyo to Hokkaido without stepping foot in an airport? Take the Sunflower to find out just how much fun a ferry trip can be!

Like an Ocean Cruise from Tokyo to Hokkaido

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

If you heard you could cruise along the coast from the Tokyo area all the way up to Hokkaido, snacking on local specialties and letting the salty ocean breeze blow through your hair, would you ever bother with the airport? The Ferry Sunflower takes all the stress of travel and turns it on its head, providing a relaxing overnight ferry trip that takes you from Oarai, Ibaraki (north of Tokyo along the coast) to Tomakomai, Hokkaido (just outside of Sapporo). So this spring, with Hokkaido cherry blossoms in mind, we  reserved our rooms on the Sunflower ,  made our way to Oarai Ferry Terminal , and set out for Hokkaido with a mission: to make the most of everything on board the ship. Now, we want to share everything we found aboard the Sunflower with you!

Tokyo~Hokkaido Ferry Sunflower (フェリーさんふらわあ) Official Website (en)

Enjoy the Ferry… In Your Room

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

You’ve made your reservations, gotten to the ferry terminal, and finally boarded the Sunflower – where do you go first? There’s a lot to see on board, but most people head straight to their rooms first thing, to drop off their luggage and take a minute to unwind. The Sunflower has a variety of cabins to suit a variety of travelers, from affordable dorm-like Tourist and Comfort rooms, to slightly more spacious rooms for families or groups of friends, and even suites with a little added luxury. Wherever you choose to rest your head at night, each of the cabins provides some space to stretch out and relax.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

All of the rooms on the Sunflower come with TVs on the wall like any land-lubbing hotel, so you can watch all the Japanese variety shows and dramas your heart desires. No matter where you find yourself on the ship, however, there’s plenty of entertainment to be found. As the ferry skims along the Japanese coast, cellphone service comes and goes, so instead the Sunflower comes equipped with its own entertainment system accessible via any smartphone or tablet. Open up the SSQ (Sunflower Smart Quest) page and scroll through the English menus to check out a variety of Hollywood blockbusters, Japanese movies, and even some simple phone games!

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Speaking of games, if you’re traveling with friends or family, games you can play together are a great way to pass the time. You can pick up a pack of playing cards, UNO, or even a little portable reversi board at the onboard gift shop!

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

If you’ve got a private cabin, we’d recommend grabbing some drinks and snacks at the shop while you’re there, to nibble on back in your room. (Try the Hokkaido soup curry flavored potato chips and the Abashiri Okhotsk Blue Ryuhyo Draft beer that’s actually a crystalline blue color.) If there’s no space in your room, just set up shop at any of the tables in the shared space instead! But anyone staying in one of the fancier rooms with a private balcony will definitely want to make the most of that space as well.

Enjoy the Ferry… Out on Deck

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Even for Sunflower passengers without their own private balcony, there’s plenty of space out on the deck to enjoy the salty sea air and the views of the Japanese coast. We recommend heading outside at three specific points during the trip. First, don’t miss departure time! If you take the evening ferry from Oarai and head out around 7:45 pm, you can wave goodbye to the port staff and watch the bright ferry terminal lights disappear over the horizon as the ferry starts moving!

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

If you’re an early riser, you won’t want to miss sunrise either. The exact time varies throughout the year (when the Japankuru team took our trip, it was about 5 in the morning!) but if you can get yourself up and out on deck to catch the sun coming up over the Pacific, it’s a magical moment.

The last must-see is also early in the morning, just about halfway along the ferry route, when the ferry going the other direction passes right by! There’s something otherworldly about watching the mirror image of the ship you’re on passing right by you, out in the open water of the ocean.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

At the information desk, you can borrow a pair of heavy-duty binoculars to really see way out across the water! While you’re there, we recommend borrowing a “captain’s uniform” as well, so you can live out your sea voyaging dreams (and take some funny pictures too).

Enjoy the Ferry… At the Buffet

The Sunflower trip from Tokyo to Hokkaido lasts almost 18 hours, so your stomach is going to start growling sooner or later! Fortunately, food options on the ship aren’t just limited to snacks from the gift shop. There’s a whole restaurant, and it serves three meals every day. For the first one, you can stop by the restaurant for dinner before the evening ship even leaves the harbor. There are a few set meal options, but most passengers choose the shipboard buffet, full of dishes made with local ingredients from Ibaraki (where the ship departs) and Hokkaido (where it arrives). On this trip, passengers piled their plates high with seared fresh bonito, seafood yakisoba noodles, braised pork belly buns, and a whole salad bar packed with different fixings.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

The breakfast buffet is similarly plentiful, with Japanese staples like rice, fish, and miso soup, continental classics like fluffy toast and pastries, plus some more unique options. Ever wanted to eat Japanese curry for breakfast? Or maybe gyoza?

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Since the ship arrives in Hokkaido a little late for lunch, the Sunflower offers some light options for an hour from 11:30 as a sort of lunch/cafe menu. This spring, that meant options like Japanese curry rice, udon noodles, and a cake set served with seasonal strawberry milk! You can only pay for food at the restaurant using cash, so make sure you bring plenty of Japanese yen with you on board.

Enjoy the Ferry… All Around the Ship

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Looking for some entertainment that you might never expect to find on board a boat? The Sunflower’s got some surprising facilities, and our favorite might just be the traditional bath and sauna area! Soak in the shared baths and watch the bathwater gently slosh from side to side as the boat sways, or take a dip in the morning hours to watch the Japanese shoreline go by through the giant windows. Don’t forget to try out the steamy wooden sauna while you’re there!

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

It’s tradition in Japan to drink milk after your bath, and you can get a carton right from the vending machines outside the baths, but we recommend drinking it while enjoying one of the massage chairs placed nearby! The chairs are each tucked away in their own little private cubby, making it a great place to keep the relaxation of the bath going a little longer.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

For something a little more flashy, head to the game corner instead. It’s not quite a full arcade, but if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at pachinko, this is your chance.

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Last but not least, the gift shop is calling, and it’s not just full of card games and potato chips! For a small shop onboard a ferry, the gift shop has a pretty impressive selection. There are everyday necessities and popular Japanese snacks side by side with Hokkaido souvenirs featuring ingredients like blue honeysuckle and Japanese mint, a selection of ice creams made with Hokkaido dairy, plus a refrigerator stocked with Hokkaido beer and Japanese sake, not to mention all the cute Sunflower ferry-themed merchandise. To commemorate the trip, we rather liked the cute stackable Sunflower mugs, or the socks with little ships on them! Just like the restaurant, the gift shop only takes cash, so make sure you’ve got enough Japanese yen on you to stock up on snacks and souvenirs.

Enjoy the Ferry All the Way to Hokkaido!

Tasty meals and blue Hokkaido beer, movie marathons in your cabin complete with Hokkaido snacks, relaxing baths and sauna breaks, plus a spectacular view of the sunrise over the water – there’s a lot to enjoy on the Sunflower, and you too can spend all 18 hours of the trip finding the best ways to have fun on board. (Well, except for a few hours of sleep, maybe.) A plane might be the quickest way from Tokyo to Hokkaido and back, but for travelers with a little time to spare for a trip over the ocean waves, a ferry ride on the Sunflower is almost certainly the most fun!

  • I'm so bored staying home! What Japanese things can I do while I'm stuck inside? First things first: lots of zoos and aquariums in Japan are posting their cutest content on twitter right now, so don't miss it! 😄 But you can also read some manga in Japanese for free (like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece!), watch Detective Conan on youtube for free (in Japanese), and then check out some good Japanese movies (with subtitles) all over the internet. Stay safe!
  • What is your favorite thing(s) to buy at Muji? Normally I think the little things at Muji are the best - simple, appealing stationery and so on... but I recently bought some sheets on sale there, and those are pretty nice too! hahahaFor travelers looking for some souvenirs, things like bags of traditional Japanese snacks might be fun. Do you have a favorite thing from Muji?
  • When will Disneyland reopen? According to the official Tokyo Disneyland website, they're closed until further notice, so there is no official date right now! Since Tokyo is currently in coronavirus lockdown, Disneyland probably won't reopen very soon. You can always check this list of closed facilities in Tokyo to see what's closed and what's open! They'll probably announce an opening date when the situation with COVID-19 calms down.
  • What would you say is the best type of sushi to get in japan? Specialty rolls aren’t really a Japanese thing; fancy maki sushi (rolls) with lots of fillings and topping are pretty rare in Japan! They’re really more like American-Japanese or wherever-Japanese food. 😉   But if you love some really high quality nigiri sushi (simple sliced fish, etc on top of a nugget of rice) then you’ll find some good stuff in Japan. I think the best route is often to find a shop with a good reputation and then try their omakase, so whatever the sushi chef recommends that day! It can also be fun to try like a maguro (tuna) tasting plate, with various cuts (everything from lean “red meat” to really fatty otoro).
  • What would be the best food that you would want to eat when you come back to Japan? Oh, by the way, my favourite is Soba noodles. Especially cold ones!

How To Cruise An Icebreaker Ship In Hokkaido by Rob Dyer

Japan's second-largest island.

Hokkaido is the second largest island of Japan, and its largest prefecture. About 43 km north lies the Russian island of Sakhalin. Beyond that lies the coastline of Siberia. This most northerly of Japan’s islands is still largely untamed and wild.

It’s also the harshest and coldest, with average January temperatures ranging from −12 to −4 °C (10.4 to 24.8 °F). None of which puts off more brown bears making Hokkaido their home more than anywhere else in Asia, outside Russia.

A further 90 minutes east by train from Abashiri, the Shiretoko peninsula is home to the Shiretoko National Park. The name Shiretoko is derived from the Ainu word sir etok , meaning " the end of the Earth ".

Sapporo, Japan Cruise Port Guide

As the capital of Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture, Sapporo balances its urban sensibilities with incredible mountainscapes, relaxing hot springs, and natural spaces built into the city center, like Odori Park, which is beautifully sandwiched among the city’s skyscrapers. Though once a humble trading town, Sapporo’s development skyrocketed in the 19th century when urban planners decided to create a new kind of Japanese city modeled after Western metropolises. Still, you’ll find plenty of historic attractions on a Sapporo cruise, like the Noboribetsu Jidaimura, a museum dedicated to the Edo period.

Let your Japan cruise with Celebrity Cruises be a gateway to the best Sapporo has to offer, whether you’re exploring the open-air Village of Hokkaido, admiring masterpieces at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, or sipping brews at the Sapporo Beer Museum.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Sapporo, you can still discover the beauty of the country on one of our Japan cruises. Browse our luxury cruises to Japan below.

Itineraries

In Japanese, the phrase “Odori” means “large street,” and almost like New York’s Central Park, Odori Park is a sweeping stretch of green located in the center of Sapporo. Explore the rose garden, or take a walking tour of the park’s wealth of artsy statues. Odori Park is not only a favorite location for people-watching, it’s also home to dozens of cultural events in Sapporo throughout the year.

Historical Village of Hokkaido

The Village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum dating back to the 19th century. It tells the story of Hokkaido’s rich history from the Meiji and Taisho periods, covering everything from Japanese culture to local wildlife. Explore the nearly 60 buildings and learn about Sapporo’s farming and fishing past.

Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village

Travel back in time to the Japanese Edo Period at Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village, a historical theme park with exhibits and reconstructed buildings from the 17th century. While at the park, you’ll pass samurai homes and nearly a hundred reconstructed buildings that emulate centuries past. Learn the secrets of Japanese ninjas, and try the art of throwing stars.

Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

Since 1977, art lovers have flocked to the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, which showcases a variety of contemporary Japanese artists. Beyond paintings and sculptures, the museum is home to rotating exhibits, fine glass art, and more.

More than a mere clock tower, the Sapporo Clock Tower is an instantly recognizable landmark and a testament to the history of Sapporo. The clock tower was built back in the 1880s and is now the spot of a historic museum detailing the rich history of Sapporo.

Explore a Chocolate Theme Park

The Shiroi Koibito Park, owned by the Shiroi Koibito sweets brand, is a theme park that celebrates all things sweet. Take a tour of the chocolate factory, learn how to make its signature cookies and chocolate, and take the kids to play in the miniature village.

Sapporo Beer Garden

A trip to Sapporo isn’t complete without a glass of the town’s eponymous beer at the lively Sapporo Beer Garden. Take a tour of the museum and learn the history of Japan’s oldest brew. Sip on a flight, then hit one of the nearby restaurants for Japanese BBQ.

Culture and History of Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Island and the fifth-largest city in Japan. Before the 19th century, Sapporo was an underdeveloped trading town. When the city hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, Sapporo grew in prominence. Today, Sapporo has a growing population of young professionals and has come to symbolize a futuristic approach to Japan’s urban centers. Plus, it’s home to its own namesake beer and brewery, which is a favorite among locals and a beloved Japanese export.

Smaller stores and local shops may not accept credit cards, but bigger establishments take credit cards like MasterCard and Visa. Tipping isn’t a common practice in Japan; it’s sometimes even considered impolite. Generally, a 10% to 15% service charge will already be included in the bill.

Breakdown of How to Travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido! Need the Best Way to Get There? Here’s How!

Hokkaido is a treasure trove of picturesque spots that are sure to impress your inner shutterbug and friends back home on social media. With UNESCO World Heritage sites like Shiretoko and more, Hokkaido boasts broad, sweeping landscapes, vibrant seasons and must-see landmarks like the Sapporo Clock Tower and Otaru Canal . With so much to see and do, there are many travelers looking for the best way to get to Hokkaido from Tokyo .

A Guide to the Best Transportation Methods between Tokyo and Hokkaido

There are many non-stop ways to get between Hokkaido and Tokyo, but each route has its perks. In this breakdown we’ll cover the merits and demerits of each route based on cost, travel time and accessibility. We’ll also add a few notes on which will help you enjoy the journey all the more.

1. What are the general ways to get from Tokyo to Hokkaido?

While people tend to mention “Hokkaido” as a single destination, Hokkaido is an especially vast area with considerable distance between each city. There are a number of routes and transportation methods available, but your best pick will depend ultimately on the region you plan to see and how you plan to get there. In broad terms, the major routes to expect will include either plane, Shinkansen (bullet train), ferry or rental car.

Traveling from Tokyo to Hokkaido By Plane

There are over 10 airports across the whole of Hokkaido, but New Chitose Airport provides easiest access to Sapporo Station. Haneda Airport and Narita Airport are the two major airports that will get you there from Tokyo. These two airports have different travel points to note, so we’ll introduce them as separate starting points.

Starting at Haneda Airport

Travel from Haneda Airport has many perks, including its convenient access putting it only a 30-minute train ride from central Tokyo. The airport provides a large selection of domestic flights, making it a hub airport from Tokyo to many places across Japan. For Haneda to New Chitose, there are over 50 flights available on any given day.

Traveling from Narita Airport

Narita Airport is located in Chiba, the neighboring prefecture next to Tokyo. It services over 115 cities across the world, making it the world’s gateway to Japan. The airport is known for having a wider selection of international than domestic flights, but in recent years, the increased number of budget airlines in Narita’s LCC terminal has drastically increased the number of domestic flights.

There are 2 Airports To Fly from in Tokyo

Located about 1 hour by train and 1.5 hours from central Tokyo, it’s hard to say that Narita is in a convenient location. Narita also has three different terminals where the third is especially distanced from the other two. Factoring the time to get between terminals on the airport campus, it’s important to prepare enough time to get to your final terminal. Just like Haneda and Narita Airports in Tokyo, you’ll need to ride a train or bus from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido to get to the city. When comparing the cost of traveling from Tokyo to Sapporo Station, its important to include the time and fair for the transportation you use to get from Airport to station. If you decide to take an LCC from Narita Airport, the distance between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport is greater than the distance between Tokyo Station and Haneda Airport, so the transportation cost and travel time will be that much greater.

Going from Tokyo to Hokkaido By Shinkansen

The Hokkaido Shinkansen line first opened in 2016, making it possible to travel from Tokyo Station to Hokkaido by bullet train. However, the final Hokkaido Shinkansen is Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station (as of October 2019), so you will still need additional trains and/or buses if your final destination is Sapporo.

The Direct Shinkansen Line to Sapporo is Expected to Open in 2030

From Tokyo to Hokkaido By Ferry

Another option from Tokyo to Hokkaido is to travel by ferry, which offers a view of the Pacific Ocean along the way. While the ferry departs from Oarai Port and arrives in Tomakomai Port, there are convenient bus options that run from Tokyo St. to Oarai Port, and from Tomakomai Port to Sapporo St. For a discount, make sure to find ferry plans that include bus fare for an even more wallet friendly option to Sapporo.

A Leisurely Ferry Trip with Oceanside View

Rental Car Options from Tokyo to Hokkaido

Renting a car is another option that will get you to Hokkaido by driving through Tohoku region. Driving can make for a fun roadtrip set to your own design, but the total trek will set you back 17 hours, so you will want to plan for this length of time. At the end you will also need to travel by Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry, the straight that separates Japan’s main Honshu Island and Hokkaido. Considering the total cost of highway tolls, ferry fee, rental car fee and fuel, the total cost of renting a car can add up.

Rental Car Options for the Most Travel Freedom

2. The Costs and Time per Each Travel Option

Here’s a breakdown of just how much you may spend per each transportation option. This comparison is based on data as of March 2021.

2. Narita Airport to New Chitose Airport

3. New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station (identical to taking a flight from Haneda)

If you add the travel time of all 3 steps, the trip from Narita Airport to Sapporo Station should take about 4.5 to 5.5 hours total. The cheapest flights may bring total travel costs down to about 7,000 yen, but you will need to check for potential additional costs per the rules of your airline carrier. Make sure to note details like ticket purchasing fees, loading fees and baggage weight limits. Another tip is to check carrier policies for cancelled flights. In some cases, a flight maybe cancelled by unforeseen reasons like poor weather, in which you may only receive a refund voucher for the same company (no cash refunds). In other cases, your flight may be rescheduled for another day, where you still need to front the costs of any hotel expenses.

The final station of the Hokkaido Shinkansen is Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station. Here’s how to get all the way to Sapporo Station in 2 easy steps:

To get from Tomakomai Port to Sapporo St., you can take a bus from the Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal to Tomakomai Station and take a train to Sapporo St., or you can take a high-speed bus from Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal to Sapporo St..

If by train, Start at Ferry Terminal and take the High-Speed Tomakomai Bus operated by Hokkaido Chuo Bus to Tomakomai Station Bus Stop. From Tomakomai Station take the JR Chitose Line Limited Express Super Hokuto and get off at Sapporo Station. Total travel time is approx. 80 minutes for a fare of 3,080 yen.

If going by high-speed bus...

If by high-speed bus, Start at Ferry Terminal and take the Tomakomai High-Speed Bus directly to Sapporo Station. Total travel time averages 2 hours at a fare of 1,330 yen.

By ferry, the trip takes approx. 23 hours; an entire day. However, if taking the less expensive room option you can get to Sapporo for only 14,200 yen. Between October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020, there's an extra special discount available through the Pacific Story plan. On the Pacific Story plan, the total cost including high-speed buses from Tokyo Station to Oarai Port, and between Tomakomai Port and Sapporo Station would total 10,260 yen. In terms of cost, this is a very wallet-friendly way to get from Tokyo to Hokkaido.

Rental Car (expressway, ferry)

If journeying by rental car, the total drive from Tokyo to Sapporo without breaks would still set you back 17 hours. However, adding in breaks or detours for sightseeing will likely make your drive a two-day trip. Express tolls can cost about 20,000 yen, the Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry from Aomori to Hakodate costs 20,000 yen. Adding in the rental car fee and 1,000 km worth of gas, you can expect this route to be long and the possibly most expensive way to travel.

Summing Up: A Comparison of the Good and Bad of Each Mode of Travel

At this point you should have a full idea of travel time and cost to get from Tokyo to Sapporo St., whether by plane, bullet train, ferry or car. Next we’ll show a full comparison of all methods so you can see the pros and cons of each laid out.

If Taking a Plane from Haneda Airport

Going via Handea Airport means Short Travel Times

If Flying with an LCC from Narita Airport

LCCs departing Narita Airport may be the Best Wallet-Friendly Choice

If Going By Shinkansen

Operation on the railways is very reliable

If Going by Ferry

Going by Ferry Means Traveling via the Spacious Leisure of a Ship

If Going By Rental Car

The rental car allows you to travel as freely as you like

Let’s sum up. If looking for shortest travel time, flying is your best option. If looking to travel in a relatively short amount of time, without worry of weather, Shinkansen is your best bet. You can also travel smoothly, with less transfers on the bullet train. If time and expense are not a concern, you may consider the scenic route, driving through Tohoku by rental car. If you want a budget-friendly, smooth ride to Hokkaido, the low and slow option offered by ferry is for you.

Travel-worthy and Memorable Ways to Travel

Enjoy a leisure ride on a cost-effective ferry. If you haven’t travelled by ferry before it may be hard to imagine. Ferry-bound travel is not just a way to get from point A to point B, but a ride that’s packed with perks of its own. Unlike a plane or train, a trip onboard a ship is a memory in itself that we’d like to lay out below.

The One-of-a-Kind Travel Experience of an Ocean Voyage

MOL Ferry Sunflower

For ferries, we recommend “Sunflower,” operated by MOL Ferry. This newly built ship was put into service in 2017, stylized with luxurious private suties and relaxing Japanese-style rooms. Enjoy a carefree ocean voyage for only 10,800 yen each way, with choices of departure times late into he night. The Novelties of a Trip Aboard the Sunflower:

1. A leisurely trip with insta-perfect views of the Pacific Ocean at Dawn & Dusk

A full day’s ferry ride means the rare chance for photos as the sun rises and falls against the Pacific Ocean. Set sail and the dusk will begin to fade into quiet night. As the moonlit ocean awaits you can enjoy the full blanket of starry skies on a clear night. In the morning, the dark skies give way to the break of dawn and bring with it a stunning view of the sun as it breaches the horizon. This is one picture-perfect view that’ll impress all you friends on social media and back home. The sun then climbs the skies, making the ocean spread like a shimmering sea before your eyes. Inhale the deep ocean-scented breeze and recharge the senses. On a lucky day, you may even spot a few dolphins.

A Breathtaking Sunrise on the Pacific

2. Full Range of Activities Onboard

On your ride, you’ll find plenty to enjoy inside the ferry as well. With event programming and a full range of onboard facilities there are countless ways to enjoy your trip. From musical performances and magic shows, to juggling, portrait drawing and hula dancing and more, there’s plenty to participate in. You can even access 100+ movies for free via smartphone or tablet.

Music Events While Aboard

3. Lavish and Wide Array of Onboard Perks

Whether with family or a group, there’s plenty to enjoy including large, scenic public bath, ocean-side seating, free sauna, gift shop an full game corner. For small children there’s Kids Land. Equipped with a baby room with changing tables and nursery so families with young infants can travel with ease. One surprising fact is there’s even a pet space and dog run! Each aspect of the ship is meticulously customized to please any guest at any age. For meals you can expect a classy, spacious restaurant and a full course set for only 1,530 yen with a side of oceanside view. There are two full course sets to choose from: a Japanese set with dishes like tempura and sashimi, or a Western set featuring various meat dishes. Feel free to pick whatever suits your fancy.

The restaurant provides satisfying meal options.

4. Upgrade your Cabin for Optimum, Hotel-Like Private Comfort

The least expensive Tourist plan consists of beds with dedicated shelves separated by curtains, but you can also upgrade your room depending on how you prefer to travel.

For around 2,000 yen, you can upgrade to the Comfort plan that comes with a bed equipped with a TV (all seats have an electrical outlet) and a secure, private space. For around 7,000 yen, you can upgrade to a private room. Various types of rooms including Japanese-style rooms, Western-style rooms, ocean-view rooms, and rooms where pets are permitted are also available options.

The Tourist rooms come with separating curtains and private outlets

5. Eliminate any communications concerns with translation system

While traveling in Japan, language barriers can be an inconvenience. The Sunflower has anticipated this, installing translations systems throughout the ship for guests from abroad. You can use the system at each terminal by contacting an operator via video call who can then interpret for you. Additionally, the main ship (evening departure) is equipped with an automatic translation system called “ili PRO”. The system is available in Chinese, English, and Korean.

Despite the price and package perks of a ferry, many are not sure what the trip entails. We hope at this point you know a little more about riding via ferry. The trip is lengthy, but instead of time from Point A to Point B, the ship offers a novel chance to enjoy the journey. With impeccable views of the ocean, a lavish ship interior and full event programming there’s plenty to enjoy. Your time on a ferry is unlike any on land. In the company of your fellow traveler, you’ll find vacationing elderly couples, young budget travelers, and families enjoying a leisurely ride. Thanks to the array of service plans there something for everyone. A tranquil trip and a colorful crew awaits you on the ferry. On a hectic and busy trip, this is one way to take it low and slow. If you have some time to spare, the ferry is a highly recommended way to visit Hokkaido.

Basic information regarding the operating cost/cost of the Sunflower

We hope you’ve enjoyed this full breakdown of the many ways to get to the hot spot destination of Hokkaido, along with one method you may not have known –the ferry. With pros and cons for each method of plane, bullet train, ferry and car, we hope you’ll bookmark this article for planning your next trip to Hokkaido!

How To Get To Hokkaido From Tokyo (Train, Flight, Ferry, Car)

tokyo cruise to hokkaido

Travel Information

Hokkaido, a true spectacle in the realm of Japanese tourism. Think snowflakes as soft as marshmallows, seafood that tastes like it was caught five minutes ago, and landscapes that could put a Monet painting to shame.

Now, here's the deal. Direct flights to Hokkaido are primarily from Asian countries—think China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore. So, for tourists from other parts of the globe, especially Europe and America, getting to Hokkaido usually involves a pit stop in Tokyo.

In this guide, we'll lay down your options for getting from Tokyo to Hokkaido—airplanes, bullet trains, ferries, and yes, even cars.

The table comparing the modes of transportation, travel time, and cost from Tokyo to Sapporo in Hokkaido is as follows.

How to Get to Hokkaido from Tokyo

Strap in, folks. We're exploring four ways to hop from Tokyo to Hokkaido.

  • Bullet Trains (Shinkansen)

Taking a Flight

When it comes to speed and convenience, nothing beats flying.

From Haneda Airport to New Chitose Airport (that's in Sapporo), it's roughly a quick 90-minute journey. And get this, flights from Tokyo have direct access to 9 major cities in Hokkaido. So no matter where in Hokkaido you're venturing, airplanes are your best bet.

Airports in Hokkaido's Major Cities

Hokkaido boasts 9 airports, each a gateway to something spectacular.

  • New Chitose Airport (Sapporo)
  • Asahikawa Airport (Asahikawa)
  • Obihiro Airport (Obihiro)
  • Kushiro Airport (Kushiro)
  • Nakashibetsu Airport (Nakashibetsu)
  • Memanbetsu Airport (Ozora)
  • Monbetsu Airport (Monbetsu)
  • Wakkanai Airport (Wakkanai)

And here’s a pro tip: New Chitose Airport is the busiest and many flight times, offering both international and domestic flights. Fly in from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, or Korea. For domestic flights, you've got choices ranging from All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) to budget airlines like Peach Aviation and Jetstar.

Airports map in Hokkaido

Time and Fare

  • Time : About 1 hour 30 minutes from Haneda to New Chitose.
  • Costs : One-way fares range from roughly ¥10,000 to ¥30,000, fluctuating based on seasons and airlines.

Booking Tips

Cheaper flights come to those who book early. If you're hunting for the best cheapest flights, check out low-cost carriers.

Also, bear in mind that while early morning and late-night flights may save you some yen, they could mess with your other travel plans. Need to look for somewhere for the night? New Chitose Airport offers an airport terminal hotel equipped with its own hot springs. A reasonable stay without breaking the bank.

Taking the Bullet Train: The Shinkansen Method

Let's zoom into how you can use the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido.

Since the Hokkaido Shinkansen launched in March 2016, getting to Hokkaido by train has been a breeze. Compared to flights, it's more relaxed—you skip all the baggage checks and heavy luggage woes. Plus, direct Bullet Trains run about ten times a day from Tokyo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station.

But here's the rub: The Shinkansen only takes you as far as Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. From there, you'll need to switch to an express train.

Train Route

You can travel from Tokyo all the way to Sapporo in Hokkaido by connecting through the Tohoku Shinkansen and the Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hayabusa Line). First, you’ll take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station in Hokkaido. If you're heading to Sapporo, you'll need to catch an express train from there. The journey to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station takes about 4 hours, and another 3.5 hours to reach Sapporo Station.

So, if you're just planning to explore Hakodate, the train is a fantastic choice. But for Sapporo or other major cities, it's not the most time-efficient.

Train Stations map in Hokkaido

Stations Along the Way

The Tohoku Shinkansen and the Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa Line have two different patterns for their stops, creating a time difference of up to 30 minutes. So, make sure to double-check when booking.

Here's a list of stations for the Hayabusa Line to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. Note that some trains may not stop at all these stations.

  • Tokyo Station (Tokyo Prefecture)
  • Ueno Station (Tokyo Prefecture)
  • Omiya Station (Saitama Prefecture)
  • Sendai Station (Miyagi Prefecture)
  • Morioka Station (Iwate Prefecture)
  • Ninohe Station (Iwate Prefecture)
  • Hachinohe Station (Aomori Prefecture)
  • Shichinohe Towada Station (Aomori Prefecture)
  • Shin-Aomori Station (Aomori Prefecture)
  • Okutsugaru Imabetsu Station (Aomori Prefecture)
  • Kikonai Station (Hokkaido)
  • Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station (Hokkaido)
  • Time : About 4 hours from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. Add another 3.5 hours to reach Sapporo.
  • Cost : For adults, the seat reservation from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto costs 25,210 yen. The express train (Hokuto) from Shin-Hakodate to Sapporo costs an additional 8,910 yen one-way.

Tips for Booking

  • Reservation : Easily book through JR's official site, service counters, or their app. Book early for potential discounts. Of course, Japan Rail Pass is a good option!
  • Seating : The Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa offers only reserved seating, no free-seating. Especially during tourist season, seats can fill up fast. On the other hand, the Hokuto express lets you choose between reserved and non-reserved seats.
  • Departure : You can go directly from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto without changing trains, all while enjoying the passing scenery.

Taking the Ferry

The ferry is another choice for traveling from Tokyo to Hokkaido. With a one-way fare starting at around 9,800 yen, it can be a budget-friendly option. Sometimes, it can even be cheaper than flying. However, bear in mind that the ferry ride takes a whopping 19 hours. So, it’s recommended only if you have a flexible itinerary or a compelling reason to bring your car along.

Ferry Route

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines operates the service between Oarai Port and Tomakomai Port , taking roughly 18 to 20 hours.

Ferry route map from Tokyo to Hokkaido

  • Duration : Approximately 18-20 hours.
  • Fare : Starting at 9,800 yen for dormitory rooms (varies based on room grade).

Ferry Schedules

Here's a handy table of convenient ferry timings. You have the option of choosing between evening and late-night departures, fitting your schedule.

The ferry operates two services daily. The evening service offers more amenities, including a variety of rooms and restaurants. Reservations can be made online from two months to 14 days before departure, so plan ahead.

A Note on the Seikan Tunnel

For those considering driving from Tokyo to Hokkaido, note this. As of 2023, the Seikan Tunnel that connects Aomori and Hokkaido is rail-only. Cars can’t pass through. So, you’ll have to take a ferry from Aomori if you're driving. Plus, Japan's highways aren't free. So, it's not the most recommended mode of travel between Tokyo and Hokkaido.

Transportation

Sunflower sapporo: video introduction.

This video, titled "Japan's Overnight Capsule Ferry 24 Hour Travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido|Mitsui MOL Ferry Co.|Sunflower|Boat Journey|Oarai to Tomakomai" (Japan's Overnight Capsule Ferry|24 Hour Travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido 商船三井フェリー さんふらわあ 船旅 大洗→苫小牧), was uploaded by "Travel Alone Idea." On the very same commercial route, MOL Ferry's Sunflower Sapporo has attracted attention for its success in unmanned operation. This article/video will guide you through the ferry trip as if you were on a tour. If you're looking for different ways to travel in Japan knowing what each type of transportation offers is important. The video will also take a look at the accommodations and restaurants on board, so be sure to check it out.

Sunflower Sapporo – A Ferry for Travelers

The Sunflower Sapporo ferry runs between Oarai Port in Ibaraki Prefecture and Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido. Fares vary from 9,800 yen to 63,200 yen depending on the accommodation type you choose. Fares also vary by season. If you're planning on bringing a car with you on the ferry, you'll need to check those rates as well. The Sunflower Furano is a ferry of the same type as the Sunflower Sapporo, and both ferries operate at night.

Guest Rooms on the Sunflower Sapporo

The Sunflower Sapporo offers several types of accommodations. The large "Tourist" accommodations with only a curtain partition are recommended for seasoned travelers and those who wish to enjoy a cruise that doesn't break the bank. The "Comfort Type" accommodations shown in the video are casual rooms that are set up as private rooms and offer more privacy. Each room is equipped with a TV so you can relax during your trip. [Video] 3:18 - Comfort Type Guest Room Other accommodations include the "premium" type, which features deluxe rooms with private balconies, as well as the "suite" type, and even Japanese-style accommodations.

Breakfast and Services on the Sunflower Sapporo

The Sunflower Sapporo has a buffet-style restaurant where passengers can enjoy a meal with a lovely view of the sea, for an additional fee. The ship also has a store where you can buy souvenirs, a large public bath, a sauna, coin-operated laundry machines, a game center, and other services to help you enjoy your trip. Free Wi-Fi is also available on board, although the connection might be a bit slow for video streaming. [Video] 5:40 - Restaurants Onboard the Ferry

Sunflower Sapporo's Pet Policy

Pets are allowed on the Sunflower Sapporo. Pet rooms are available for pets, and the ferry also offers rooms for those who wish to stay with their pets during their voyage. Both require advance reservations and filling out a confirmation form, so please keep this in mind when making reservations. There is also a free dog run so your pet can enjoy the cruise as well. It's quite accommodating for those looking to travel with their pets!

Tokyo-Sapporo Pacific Story: An Affordable Way to Explore Japan

Pacific Story is a connecting ticket that offers special discount rates for express buses and ferries from Tokyo Station to Sapporo Station. It eliminates the hassle of purchasing a ticket when transferring between buses and ferries, allowing you to enjoy a hassle-free journey. You can also arrange your trip so that you can stay overnight in Mito or Oarai, or in Tomakomai or Sapporo. To use Pacific Story, reservations must be made at the Passenger Booking Centers.

Summary of the Sunflower Sapporo

The Sunflower Sapporo and Sunflower Furano are overnight ferries and are favorites among boat travelers. The best part of traveling by boat is that you can spend time relaxing and enjoying the view of the sea, something you cannot experience when traveling by plane or train. Consider trying this means of transportation as a way to enjoy the sea as you travel between Tokyo and Sapporo! 【Official Website】Mitsui O.S.K. The vibrant city of Hiroshima has a complicated history, great food and friendly locals. While it's probably most famous for being devastated by a nuclear attack during World War II, Hiroshima as a city promotes peace and understanding.

Every year on 6 August, a memorial service is held to commemorate the victims of the 1945 attack. Thousands write messages of peace on paper lanterns that are lit at sunset to float down the river past the iconic remains of the Atomic Bomb Dome.

During a visit, be sure to check out the Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. You should also taste Hiroshima's version of okomiyaki, a local delicacy. Another highlight is going to nearby Miyajima to see its deer and picturesque floating shrine.

Explore Hiroshima during a 2025 spring-time cruise to Japan, where you'll have time to visit the war memorials, shrines and temples.

Japan's Tohoku region is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures. This northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures that boast custom and heritage. The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 brought out the resilient nature of Tohoku's people, and local passion and pride are putting the area back on its feet.

There's a lot to be proud of, too – dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing.

During a trip to the region, you can enjoy the explosive sound, colour and drama of the Aomori Nebuta Festival in summer. Or wander the temples, gardens and archeological sites of World Heritage-listed Hiraizumi in Iwate.

Don't miss an adventure along Hachinohe's section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail and foodies will want to taste the sweet cherries of Yamagata and the juicy peaches of Fukushima.

The island of Hokkaido is a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding in winter, thanks to top resorts like Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano. Sapporo, its main city, is also famous for beer, ramen and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. It's not all about winter fun here, though.

Hokkaido’s mild summers also provide relief from Japan’s humidity, and offer ideal conditions for hiking and exploring the many national parks. Much of Hokkaido is wild and unspoiled, with hot springs and volcanic lakes, so you're never too far from nature.

While here, explore the culture and traditions of the indigenous Ainu people at Lake Akan, and journey to the Shiretoko Peninsula to see free-roaming brown bears, foxes and deer. Visiting in the summer? Everyone will be dazzled by the rolling hills of Furano's lavender farms, while foodies will love dining on fresh seafood including succulent crab, salmon and fresh sushi in Hokkaido, too.

HOKKAIDO HOTELS

We love the distinct seasons in the Toyama region. It lies around two hours north of Tokyo, blanketed by snow in winter and blooming with cherry blossoms in spring. While Toyoma City is renowned for its fresh seafood, the wider region is particularly lovely. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given it's surrounded by rushing rivers and lush mountains.

This beautiful pocket of Japanese countryside is home to the UNESCO-listed area of Gokayama, which comprises the two villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, known for their carefully preserved thatched buildings called gassho-zukuri . The roofs are designed to resemble the hands of Buddhist monks’ pressed together in prayer. In winter, the snow-covered gassho-zukurie take on the look of a magical, fairy tale scene.

Join a Japanese cruise departing in spring 2025, and you’ll call at Toyama as the cherry blossom emerges. On an excursion, you can make the scenic hour-long journey from the cruise terminal to Gokayama, passing through the Nanto area of Toyama, where the Shogawa River and Oyabegawa rapids flow.

A 2024 extension to Japan's bullet train network makes access to a beautiful region deep in the mountains of the Fukui Prefecture much more accessible for visitors. It offers the chance to visit locations where you can join in with traditional rituals and learn more about Japanese culture in more remote pockets of the country.

The new train journey whisks visitors to locations like Eiheiji, where you’ll find one of the main temples of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244. It’s a spiritual place amid mountainous scenery and ancient woodland, and guests are invited to join the practice. On departure, guests are presented with a goshuin , a traditional document written in exquisite Japanese calligraphy to certify their visit.

Next to the temple is the Zen Village, where you'll find the beautiful Hakujukan hotel, a sustainably built ryokan. As part of their stay, guests can partake in Zen meditation, known as zazen , before soaking in an open-air bath.

Koyasan, also known as Mount Koya, is thought by many as the most sacred place in all of Japan. Home to the centre of Shingon Buddhism, a sect that was brought to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi, one of the country's most prominent Buddhist monks, this mountain settlement comprises over 100 monasteries and temples.

The Shingon headquarters sit within the Kongobuji temple, which is open to visitors. Here you can learn about how Daishi founded the settlement and visit peaceful Banryutei Rock Garden, Japan’s largest rock garden.

Thanks to its verdant peaks and winding valleys, Koyasan is a popular place for hiking and is the starting point for the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a holy route that stretches roughly 750 miles and takes in 88 temples.

Koyasan is easy to access from Osaka via train for a day trip, but stay the night in shukubo (traditional temple lodgings) and you can enjoy a more immersive experience, interacting with monks and sampling their vegetarian cooking.

Rapidus Corp.’s semiconductor foundry construction site in Hokkaido, Japan.
