Apply for a school travel pass

Introduction.

The School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) gives eligible school students free or subsidised travel between home and school on NSW public transport, including trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

Depending on where you're travelling, you may receive a free school travel pass, a School Opal card, or both.

Eligible cards are automatically updated for the new school year, so you'll only need to apply if you're:

  • applying for a school travel pass for the first time
  • changing name, school and/or address, or
  • requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation.

Eligibility

You need to live a minimum distance from your school to be eligible for a free school travel pass. The minimum distance varies according to the year/grade you are enrolled in, in that calendar year:

  • Years K to 2 (Infants): no minimum distance
  • Years 3 to 6 (Primary): 1.6 kilometres straight line distance or 2.3 kilometres walking or further
  • Years 7 to 12 (Secondary): 2 kilometres straight line distance or 2.9 kilometres walking or further.

What you need

A valid email address.

Applications must be made by a parent or legal guardian if you're under 16 years of age. If you're 16 years or older you need to complete and sign the application form yourself.

How to apply

  • Select the 'Apply online' button.
  • Complete the online application.
  • Note down your application ID number, starting with the prefix ‘N’ or ‘UN’.
  • You’ll then be able to track the status of your application.

For more information on travel concessions available for school students visit Transport for NSW .

More information

  • School Opal cards are issued for free school travel, and as School Term Bus Passes, for travel within the Opal network. They're issued by Transport for NSW.
  • For students travelling on buses outside the Opal network, school bus passes and School Term Bus Passes are issued by individual operators. Some operators in rural and regional areas may choose not to issue passes to students.
  • The School Opal card/bus pass is only valid for use between home and school on the transport operators specified in your original application. If you try to use your School Opal card for unapproved travel the Opal card reader will show an error message.
  • If you don't qualify for free travel to and from school, you may be eligible to purchase a School Term Bus Pass.
  • For personal travel, children aged 16 years and under should use a  Child/Youth Opal card .

Can you study abroad in high school.

Yes, studying abroad in high school is possible and that's what CIEE Global Navigator programs are all about!

Our full range of study abroad programs give high schoolers the opportunity to spend anywhere between 3 weeks and a full academic year abroad. Our scholarships make summer abroad accessible to more students as we give away close to $7 million in scholarship funds to U.S. high school students each year. Students who may otherwise not have had a chance to travel as teenagers get to make lifelong friendships with students from across the U.S. and the world, helping them see themselves and other cultures in a new light.

Studying abroad in high school is not only transformative; it helps students stand out in college applications and job interviews. Unlike other countries where studying abroad is common during high school, only about 2% of U.S. students get that opportunity every year!

Questions About High School Study Abroad

Studying abroad while still in high school offers many benefits for teens, such as:

  • World language proficiency
  • Credentials for college applications and job interviews
  • Life skills, like independence, intercultural awareness, and a global perspective , that can’t be learned in the classroom
  • New friendships to last a lifetime

After participating in CIEE high school study abroad programs, Global Navigator alumni are on the path to becoming global citizens with the cultural competencies that prepare them for the future.

High school study abroad is all about experiential learning.

Discussions, group work, hands-on workshops, excursions and time for reflection are types of experiential learning offered on Global Navigator programs.

Students who learn through direct action, experience, and reflection can gain greater knowledge of a topic, develop more skills, and make better connections with the subject-matter in and out of class.

While everyone is different and there is no specific age when it is best to study abroad, high school is a special time of life when studying abroad can make a real difference. It helps students grow into more independent adults and shapes college and career choices !

CIEE high school study abroad programs are designed for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Most students on CIEE Global Navigator programs are in their junior and senior year.

Parents and teachers are sometimes concerned about their freshmen high school students studying abroad. However, approximately 20% of our students are rising sophomores. A study abroad experience with three full years of high school remaining provides the foundation for greater growth in language and independence over time.

Our High School Summer Abroad Language & Culture programs offer students the option to earn 4 college credits in high school to put toward a future college degree.

Since 1947, CIEE has been opening doors for U.S. students to study abroad.

We’re the longest-running, non-profit study abroad organization and operate our own study centers around the world. Every year, we support more than 3,500 U.S. high school students traveling abroad. We also administer the largest study abroad scholarship fund for high school students in the U.S. and award $6 million every year, making our programs accessible to everyone!

  • The application for travel occurring  September 1 - December 31  will be open Aug. 16 12:01am - Aug. 18 11:59pm MST.
  • The application for travel occurring January 1 - April 30 will be open Dec. 12 12:01am - Dec. 15 11:59pm MST.
  • Applications are only open and available during the time period listed.

The Graduate School offers partial funding for CU Boulder graduate students traveling  outside the state of Colorado  to present their own research or work at a conference, meeting, or similar event. These travel grants provide  up to  $450 to students traveling within the Unites States,  up to  $600 to students traveling to Canada, or Mexico, and  up to  $700 to students traveling outside the Unites States, Canada, or Mexico.

Please note this grant is treated like a fellowship and will be reported to the Office of Financial Aid, therefore, please be aware that receiving this grant may affect your student loan package.

This grant functions as a reimbursement. If a travel grant application is approved, funds will be applied directly to the student's university account  after  the dates of travel have passed and receipts have been submitted. Please note we will be reviewing reimbursement requests on a bi-weekly basis for all travel grant awardees. Therefore it may take up to two weeks for your grant to be processed, depending on when receipts are submitted.

If a student is paying an out of pocket amount equal to or more than the respective travel grant, they will receive a full grant (i.e. $450, $600, and $700, respectively). If a student's out of pocket costs are below those thresholds, they will receive a partial grant to cover those costs. We will only reimburse for costs associated with transportation, lodging and registration costs. Please be aware that students must be enrolled during the term that the travel occurs or the funds will applied to the next term. If the student's bursar account balance is zero, a refund via direct deposit will be issues to the student. If the account balance is not zero, the funds will go toward covering any balance.

This grant is contingent on continued funding by the Graduate School.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be enrolled full-time as a graduate student and in good academic standing.

Student Travel Resources

The Graduate School encourages student travel for research and professional development. In some disciplines, research travel is essential to complete the requirements of the degree and you may need to undertake a period of full-time study, research, or fieldwork outside of the New Haven area. Beyond that, travel for conference participation, shorter research trips, and study elsewhere can be invaluable to your professional development, regardless of discipline.

Students have access to an array of resources to support travel for research, study, and professional development. See below for a detailed overview of funding sources, health coverage information, and resources for domestic and international travel.

Registration during academic travel

If you will be based at another location in the US or abroad for your research for a semester or full academic year, you should register in absentia at Yale.

Health Coverage

Options for insurance coverage during a period of research travel depend on whether you will be in the US or abroad. Your Yale student health coverage will remain on your term bill unless these fees are waived by the appropriate deadline. Waiver forms and student rates for Yale students can be found on the Yale Health website .

If you are going to be based elsewhere in the US for purposes related to your degree requirements during the academic year, you have the option of enrolling in the Approved Academic Travel Rider program through Yale Health.

The Yale Health pages on this option contain detailed information about deadlines for applying for the rider, coverage considerations, eligibility, and costs. Please review this information carefully well in advance of your planned travel and make sure that you are aware costs, coverage, and the relevant application deadline, which is firm.

You must first register in absentia (see above) to be eligible to apply. Only students registered in absentia in the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii, and outside of the Yale Health coverage area in Connecticut) are eligible to enroll.

If you are going abroad for an extended period to pursue research and/or coursework for your degree, you will want to review carefully Yale’s information on health coverage for university affiliates while abroad .

In addition, if you are a PhD student traveling for dissertation research, the Graduate School provides a Travel Health Fellowship to cover the cost of required immunizations and prescription drugs at Yale Health. Costs from outside medical services will not be considered for reimbursement. See the Travel Health Fellowship page for more information.

Travel Awards

Please note, please note:.

  • Travel Booking Restrictions: Domestic booking, including all U.S. territories, reopened July 1, 2021. International travel remains restricted.
  • Exceptions will be granted for essential international travel, which is travel critical to UWM’s mission, which cannot be rescheduled and is for work that must be conducted in person.   Public health guidance  should be reviewed before requesting an exception.
  • Exceptions will be managed and approved by Risk Management and designated campus leadership through the TMEA ( Travel and Miscellaneous Expense Authorization ) process. Each request will be reviewed for health and safety considerations. Approved travel may be booked through Concur or with an agent.
  • If you must request an exception for international travel, please read the university’s  International Travel Policy . This policy establishes procedures and restrictions for certain international travel that may pose increased risks.
  • Students may apply for travel assistance from the Graduate School by submitting a  Graduate Student Travel Support Application . In the application, students must upload proof that they are presenting, performing or exhibiting at the specified event.
  • Please email  [email protected]  for questions and assistance or contact Tiffany Nation, graduate student travel coordinator at the Graduate School at  [email protected] . Or call 414-229-7108.
  • Guide to Receiving Your Reimbursement
  • Graduate Student Travel Support Application

The Graduate Student Travel Awards offer funding to UWM master’s and doctoral students for presenting scholarly and creative works developed in UWM graduate degree programs. Students can use travel awards to participate in academic or professional activities such as conferences, performances or exhibitions. These can be important professional development opportunities where students can receive feedback on their work and grow their professional networks. Travel awards are most often used to present work at major regional, national or international meetings in students’ disciplines. Because students receive a single allocation for their entire time in their degree, they should consult their advisors on how to use this support most effectively. Funding is provided as reimbursement of expenses after the travel has been completed.

Eligibility

  • Travelers must be enrolled in a graduate degree program (not a certificate).
  • Travelers must be actively presenting, performing or exhibiting at the conference or other academic event, and must be officially recognized by the sponsoring organization. Evidence confirming participation is required before funds will be released. This typically takes the form of a letter or notice of acceptance, or of a link to, or PDF of, the program schedule. If this is not available in advance of travel, a student may apply with a contingent approval letter from some other source (such as a research advisor), but reimbursement will not be provided after travel without official confirmation.
  • Because forms of academic presentation and engagement are variable, other justifications for travel can be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Applications are not accepted for travel occurring after graduation from the program.
  • Travel that is not eligible for these awards includes: travel for conference attendance without presenting; job interviews; accessing libraries, galleries or other research archives, and travel for fieldwork or off-campus placements.

Application

  • Please visit the Graduate Student Travel Support Application to apply.
  • Travelers will be asked to detail the expected expenses in their request for funds.
  • Travelers are encouraged to submit applications as far as possible before the event.
  • Applications must be completed and submitted before travel occurs. Post-travel applications will not be accepted.
  • Travelers are also encouraged to seek travel support through their degree program to supplement any award received through the Graduate Student Travel Awards.

Limitations

Doctoral students are allotted a total of $1,000 for travel expenses while enrolled in their UWM degree program. Master’s students are allotted a total of $500 for travel expenses while enrolled in their UWM degree program. These funds can be spent on a single trip or can be spread across multiple trips. The Graduate School will retain records of the amount of funds available to each student based on the expenses incurred.

A student who receives support as a master’s student and subsequently enrolls in a UWM doctoral program can be allotted the full amount for both degrees, a total of $1,500. The allocation for the doctoral portion of the degree cannot be used until the master’s degree is completed.

Travelers can combine Graduate School travel funding with travel funding from AOP or university fellowships. Students who have travel funding from fellowships must use fellowship funding for travel first, because it likely will not carry over beyond the term of the fellowship.

The maximum amount of travel funding from all Graduate School sources, including funding from Travel Awards, AOP, DDF, DGSF and other Graduate School fellowship travel funding, cannot exceed $1,500 for a single trip. Exceptions will only be made in extraordinary circumstances with the approval of the dean of the Graduate School.

Travel Awards can be augmented with travel funding from extramural or program-level sources other than AOP and Graduate School fellowship travel funding.

Travel Guidelines

  • Awardees must comply with the state and campus travel policies and procedures and any other school or college instructions. This includes the rule that travelers will only be reimbursed for eligible expenses for the least expensive method of travel, which is not necessarily by automobile. In other words, you may travel by whatever method you choose, but your reimbursement will be limited to the least expensive method.
  • The cost of driving must be less than the cost of commercial airfare, including necessary costs of lodging, meals, and other incidentals that may be associated with automobile travel.
  • If it’s not completed, you will be ineligible for mileage reimbursement on your trips.
  • Please complete your Vehicle Use Agreement (Driver Authorization) via the online   https://fleetportal.wi.gov/ .
  • The Guide to Receiving Your Reimbursement has important information on making travel arrangements and the documentation that you will need for reimbursement of eligible expenses.

Graduate school funds that have not been spent will not be available for other travel. If a meeting is rescheduled, send confirmation of the new time/location to Erika Beckstrand .

The Graduate Student Travel Award promotes student involvement and professional development by partially funding a student’s travel and/or registration costs associated with professional presentations at regional, national, international, and virtual conferences.

Presenting at conferences helps you network with other researchers, practice communicating your research, build your CV, and prepare for your post-graduate job search.

Funding Amount

The School of Graduate Studies will award travel grants from $150-$400 depending on the location of the conference and while funds last. All awards require a dollar-for-dollar match from a department or other university source. Grants are presented on a first-come, first-served basis. The funds will only be applied on the student's travel authorization or travel reimbursement.

  • Virtual conference: $150
  • Regional conference*: $200
  • National conference: $300
  • International conference: $400

*Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada

Covered Costs

SGS travel grants can be used to help cover any of the following expenses:

  • Conference registration
  • International travel insurance

Eligibility

To be eligible for a travel grant, applicants must be:

  • A full-time graduate student
  • Able to provide proof of acceptance to present at a conference
  • Able to acquire a dollar-for-dollar match from their department or other university source
  • Willing to share their experience and pictures with the School of Graduate Studies through a post-event form
  • Willing to purchase the university’s SOS travel insurance if traveling internationally

Students are limited to one graduate travel award per fiscal year. Over the course of their degree, master’s students can receive up to two travel awards and doctoral students can receive up to three travel awards.

Only one student per presentation/poster will be funded although multiple students may be funded to attend the same meeting/conference.

If a presentation has co-presenters, the student’s designated department may agree at any time that the Graduate Student Travel Award funding be split between the two presenters.

Application Process

To apply, students are required to complete a graduate student travel application form a minimum of two weeks prior to the date of travel. Due to grants being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, students are strongly encouraged to apply before the two-week mark.

The application form requires the following information:

  • Personal information
  • Conference information
  • Presentation information
  • You can either submit a PDF of your email confirmation showing you have been accepted to present, or you can submit a PDF of the conference program with your name listed as a presenter
  • Source of matching funds

Upon submission, you will receive an automated email confirmation that your application has been received. You will be notified of the outcome of your request (approved, denied, or incomplete), typically within 10 working days.

Ukraine war latest: Flights suspended at Russian airport for 'safety reasons'

Kazan International Airport has suspended flights due to the threat of Ukrainian drone strikes, according to reports. It comes after an oil depot in Russia's Rostov region was set on fire by overnight aerial attacks.

  • Russian nuclear reactor 'extremely exposed' under 'normal roof'

  • Your questions answered: Can Ukraine advance further inside Russia?
  • Reporting by Mark Wyatt

Olena Zelenska says she is confident that political will and international cooperation can "work wonders" for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Kyiv's first lady spoke at a rehabilitation camp for children in the western city of Uzhhorod that she financially supports through her charity.

A study by the Olena Zelenska Foundation and the Kyiv School of Economics this year found that 44% of Ukrainian children show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The camp gives many children a chance to get away from the front-line cities where they live.

"This issue needs to be addressed immediately, as soon as it arises, before it grows into something more," she said.

"To ensure our children do not become a lost generation, we as adults must be not just active but also swift.

"It's difficult, but there is still the ongoing defence of the country. However, I am confident that political will combined with international cooperation can work wonders."

Mrs Zelenska said holding Russia accountable must remain a key part of any end to the war.

"Only then will it be a victory," she said. "It may not be quick, but we need to constantly keep in mind this vision of how it should be, so that nothing is forgotten and no one is left out."

Ukrainian forces claim to have shot down a Russian Su-25 jet aircraft in the Donetsk region.

Anti-aircraft units reportedly downed the plane with a man-portable air-defence system as it was attempting to fire at Ukrainian troops.

Posting on Telegram, the Ukrainian brigade that claimed responsibility for shooting down the jet said: "The fate of the crew is still unknown, but we know for sure that it is one less problem for our infantry."

A video showing a pair of planes in the distance, one of which is shot down in mid-air, accompanied the statement.

Russia says it wants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a "more objective and clearer" stance on nuclear energy after its chief visited Kursk's nuclear power plant yesterday.

Rafael Grossi toured the plant and warned of the dangers of a nuclear accident there. He said he inspected damage from a drone strike, which Russia blamed on Ukraine.

But Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said: "We see both the assessments and the work of this structure (the IAEA), but each time we want a more objective and clearer expression of the position of this structure.

"Not in favour of our country, not in favour of confirming Moscow's position, but in favour of facts with one specific goal: ensuring safety and preventing the development of a scenario along a catastrophic path, to which the Kyiv regime is pushing everyone."

Ukraine has not responded to Russian accusations that it attacked the plant in the Kursk region, which sits around 25 miles (40km) from where fighting has been taking place.

Asked if he would condemn the damage done to the plant as "nuclear provocation" by Ukraine, Mr Grossi said: "Again, pointing fingers is something that I, as director general of the IAEA, must take extremely seriously.

"But it is obvious that you cannot separate what we have seen here from the recent military activity that we have seen."

Russia has reportedly suspended flights from Kazan airport due to the threat of drones strikes.

State news agencies, citing Moscow's aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia, said the airport would not be receiving or sending flights from 7am (4am UK time) "to ensure the safety of civil aircraft".

One Russian Telegram channel claimed the suspension was due to the threat of drone strikes.

Kazan airport, which sits 560 miles (900km) east of the Ukrainian border, temporarily shut in June due to "security reasons".

The NATO-Ukraine Council will meet today as Kyiv briefs its allies on the status of the war.

Ukraine's defence minister, Rustem Umerov, is expected to appear via video-link for the meeting.

He will brief the council "on the battlefield situation and priority capability needs", according to the spokesperson.

For context:  The NATO-Ukraine Council was launched in 2023 as part of a three-part package of support bringing Kyiv closer to NATO.

It replaced the NATO-Ukraine Commission, which was the decision-making body responsible for developing the NATO-Ukraine relationship and for directing cooperative activities from 1997-2023.

Ukraine is recovering after Russia launched two waves of missile and drone attacks on the country on successive nights this week.

In one of its biggest air attacks since the war began, Russia hit both civilian and infrastructure targets.

Ukrainian reports say at least 13 people have died following the bombardment, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy promising retaliation.

Catch up on what's been happening in the conflict so far this week here...

Ukrainian drones reportedly set oil tanks on fire at a depot in Russia's Rostov region overnight.

Russian Telegram channels reported that three tanks were burning at the depot in the Kamensky district after two drones fell on the area.

In separate reports, the governor of Rostov and the Russian defence ministry said four drones were destroyed over the region overnight, with no mention made of the oil depot.

Russian emergency services continue to try to tackle a separate blaze at another oil depot in the Rostov region that was sparked by a Ukrainian strike on 18 August.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine, after two days of heavy Russian bombardment killed at least 13 people.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to respond to the attacks, and said long-awaited Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets were used to help defend Ukraine's skies.

Meanwhile, Russian Telegram channels suggested Ukraine is attempting to push into Russia's southern Belgorod region, following their successful invasion of Kursk.

In Kursk, International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said after inspecting the region's nuclear power plant that it was "extremely exposed and fragile" to attack, protected only by a "normal roof".

Before we resume our live updates and analysis, here is a recap of the other key developments over the last 24 hours:

  • Kyiv will present US officials with a tailored list of long-range targets they wish to strike inside Russia, according to reports;
  • Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said the West "is asking for it" and is "playing with fire" if the US is considering lifting restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western long-range weapons;
  • Sir Keir Starmer said there had been "no new decisions" on letting Ukraine use UK-provided Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia;
  • Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine successfully ran a test of its first domestically made ballistic missiles;
  • NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will convene a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council today at the request of the Ukrainian president.

We're pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis tomorrow, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today.

Russia launched another wave of missiles and drones overnight that killed at least six people.

It followed a massive aerial attack on Sunday night that saw seven people killed and 15 regions struck.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine had  used Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets to help defend itself.

He also promised Ukraine would respond to the attacks.

Elsewhere, Russian Telegram channels reported that Ukrainian forces were attempting to push into Russia's southern Belgorod region.

Reports said 500 troops attacked two checkpoints at Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino, which borders both Ukraine and the Russian region of Kursk, which Kyiv invaded on 6 August.

In other news from the conflict:

  • Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine successfully ran a test of its first domestic-made ballistic missiles;
  • He also said he's going to present a plan to the US on how he intends to end the war with Russia;
  • Sir Keir Starmer said there has been "no new decisions" on letting Ukraine use UK-provided Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia;
  • The head of the international nuclear watchdog said was a danger of a "nuclear accident" at the "extremely exposed" Kursks nuclear power plant;
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he "exchanged perspectives" on the war in Ukraine with Vladimir Putin;

Pictures show an inspection of Kursk nuclear power plant led by Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He warned the plant's nuclear reactor was "extremely exposed and fragile" to attack, protected only by a "normal roof" from impact.

The plant is based in the Kursk region of Russian, which Ukraine invaded earlier this month.
