TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF Wedge Review
Finally, TaylorMade has made a wedge that I feel can challenge the main brands in the specialist wedge sector.
The Tour Preferred EF has a lovely classic shape that is much more traditional and almost like some of the early TP wedges they created.
The cast 1025 carbon steel head has a shiny, smoky PVD finish that combines great looks with non-glare style and will get your playing partners drooling over it.
The finish will wear over time so if you can't get that ball wear mark in the centre of the face like the pro's then you can always get the steel wool out instead.
TaylorMade says the EF wedge will spin at 350rpm more than the chrome Tour Preferred 14 wedges thanks to the Electroformed (EF) Nickel Cobalt grooves.
The grooves are part of a plate upon which a TaylorMade add a face insert that is 0.25mm thick comprising 'charged ions from the ionization of nickel and cobalt.' There, unless you are a chemistry expert, you know as much as I do now.
The face also features a Micro Texture face to 'increase ball speed and control' and, like several other models, it is really just some extra roughness between the grooves to provide more grip.
TaylorMade claim the grooves will stay sharper for longer due to the finish and the EF grooves and I would say spin levels were about average for a premium wedge straight out of the wrapper.
The sole has what TaylorMade call the Tour Grind, which is a subtle C grind that extends from a well relieved heel along the length of the sole. You can just make it out below going diagonally from the toe to the heel.
At address it sits very well and has a small offset and a relatively straight leading edge that still manages to get under the ball with ease.
I tried a 58 degree version with 10 degrees of bounce and from the turf it was effortless and tended to play with a little less bounce than the number on the sole says. The grind made it equally versatile to play with the the toe down and the heel off the ground or to open up from tight lies and this is where the TP EF wedge has a real advantage.
It did struggle a little out of soft sand due to that low bounce style, so make sure you have a loft with enough bounce if you play in those conditions a lot.
The TP EF wedge comes with the excellent KBS Wedge Tour V shaft that is 5 grams heavier than the standard KBS Tour wedge shaft
This shaft has been specifically designed to give the right trajectory and spin for wedge shots and it suits the club very well. The trajectory was more of a mid height and it was very easy to manipulate it higher or lower if required.
Overall the TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF wedge is very versatile and does everything that a better player would want and the EF finish brings it all together in a classy package.
If you touring around for a traditional looking wedge that plays with a little less bounce than average, then the TaylorMade EF is certainly a preferred choice.

Leaked: TaylorMade R-Series Wedges
Photos leaked in our forum show what appears to be a new TaylorMade wedge line called the R-Series.
The two photos show two different grinds, TaylorMade’s ATV Grind and a new Tour Grind. The two options are consistent with the company’s current wedge line, Tour Preferred .
The wedges have TaylorMade’s much loved “TP” badge on their backs, which after disappearing from TaylorMade club heads for several years returned to TaylorMade irons this fall with the RSi TP .
The R-Series wedges also include the words “EF Spin Groove.” Could the grooves create “extra friction” for more spin?
We’ll let you know as soon as we do.

Rumor is… Groves are so good, tour guys will be able to go a whole season without replacing.
Jan 26, 2015 at 2:52 am
I hope everybody realizes the playability of a wedge has nothing to do with how the back of it looks. A negative prejudice before physical testing is ignorant.
Jan 22, 2015 at 9:00 pm
Rough crowd! I don’t play TM except for last year’s Tour Preferred wedges which I think are great.
Jan 12, 2015 at 5:13 pm
We’ll they can’t be any worse than their last few wedge offering which were just cheap and crap
Saw the new R15 last weekend and it looked very classy, these look nasty
Jan 11, 2015 at 11:31 am
I see they have decided to go back to the TP badge…
Jan 12, 2015 at 10:49 am
Ummm…Hello Taylormade, this is Mizuno calling. Just wanted to let you know that we have already have R Series Wedges out. Back in like 2006. Stop ripping our stuff off! Go find a new name, produce something worthwhile and take more than 2 months before you go to market with it.
Jan 10, 2015 at 3:54 pm
Wedges??!! We are 10 days into the new year, where’s the new driver?
Jan 10, 2015 at 12:11 pm
Man Taylor Made should just stop everything…
Jan 10, 2015 at 9:38 am
They look very very cheap. For fuggs sake just make some classic looking forged wedges and watch them fly off the shelves…
Jul 29, 2015 at 7:56 pm
I’m sayin’.
Jan 10, 2015 at 3:45 am
piece of normality and i say so bloody what? do they expect me to be excited when there are better wedges on the market ..no…so they are therefore becoming a bit of a joke co releasing so many new clubs with negligible improvement in each one.
Jan 10, 2015 at 1:07 am
Hopefully it performs better than it looks, and as mentioned there are probably much better options out there, Mack Daddy 2, Vokey and Mizuno for starters.
Jan 9, 2015 at 10:13 pm
Horrible color.

Taylormade is just a marketing company that spits out as much **** as possible.
Strongly Agree! Seems Taylormade made an error thinking new products every two months was a positive.

no Golf manufacture can compete in the driver market however they have a long way to go in the wedge market.

Jan 8, 2015 at 10:49 pm
TM is sure developing a love-hate relationship… seems like more and more people just love to hate them!
Jan 8, 2015 at 9:34 pm
Cheap, stick to drivers.
Jan 8, 2015 at 8:23 pm
The only thing missing from the back are Goodyear and Sunoco decals.
Jan 8, 2015 at 8:10 pm
I’m surprised TM hasn’t released 2 drivers by now. We are 8 days into the new year!
Jan 8, 2015 at 9:16 pm
Good one lol
Jan 8, 2015 at 10:50 pm
I was shocked too
Jan 9, 2015 at 1:07 pm
Why should they? Titleist just floated their new line-the 915 with “active recoil channels”. Ping and Cobra just filed patents to introduce “slots”in their next line of woods. So TMAG will just sit back and wait for everybody else to play catch up and then they will introduce the next technological evolution rendering everybody else’s obsolete Kind of like what they did when then introduced golfers to the “Metal” wood.
looks like regis is wrong again
Jan 8, 2015 at 7:40 pm
These look ok.
The last wedge iteration from TMAG looked fantastic but left you in disbelief with some of the worst feel in a wedge…ever. It felt like a $49 starter wedge from Sam’s Club.
Turd Ferguson
Jan 8, 2015 at 6:26 pm
How can you tell anything from this camera angle? Are we just commenting on the graphics, or is the feel/grind of the wedge important?
note* these look terrible and probably are (all other TM wedges are unplayable)
Jan 8, 2015 at 6:13 pm
As far as looks, they moved in the right direction with their cleanish tp wedges last year. Looks like they locked that designer back in the basement to favor guys producing more dynamic* designs.

TaylorMade EF Spin Groove Wedge Review
Published: 15 May 2015 Last updated: 12 April 2016
At a glance
- TG Rating 5 out of 5
- Owner Rating Not yet rated
Very good rough spin retention.
Mid-spin KBS Wedge shaft won’t suit everyone.
- RRP £119.00
What we say...
Nickel cobalt face plate increases spin and keeps the grooves sharper for longer. Soft feel through carbon steel construction. ATV sole permits effective strikes from all lies; Classic grind offers more loft options.
TG Tester Reviews:
James Ridyard The classy finish reminds me of the old oil can finish on Scotty Cameron putters. The KBS wedge shaft is more counterbalanced so the head feels lighter, which makes it especially good on finesse shots where you want the hands overtaking the clubhead.
Duncan Lennard A really good-looking club with a quite compact head. For me, it hit a good blend of workability and forgiveness, and performed well from sand.

TaylorMade Golf TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind WEDGE Review
The TaylorMade Golf TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind retails for $129,99 (MSRP) and it's aimed at providing golf-players with a plethora of shot types using a single wedge . Basically, the TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind can be described as the swiss army knife in the realm of wedges . Long story short, if you require versatility and top performance with both grinds, the TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind is what you're looking for. Besides unprecedented levels of performance, you'll also get a chance to show off, because this high-trajectory ATV is fairly simple to play, being very forgiving and buttery smooth through the ground and plain effective from basically anywhere. The TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind features an all-terrain versatility shape, being a tad narrower than the classic-grind and it performs best from tight lies or with the face open.
The TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind is designed for keeping the bounce lower on bunker shots, chips or on full shots. However, the bounce increases when you open the face, i.e. when hitting higher shots around the green. The TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind is described by Keith Sbarbaro (VP of Tour Operations for TylorMade) as being the purest and most traditional wedge the company ever manufactured. The face uses a Micro Texture design in order to improve control and ball speed which works in tandem with a very aggressive groove design, that improves contact between the ball and the club-face, resulting in excellent spin control around the greens. The wedge feels heavy but well balanced and easy to hit, the impact is quiet and soft, the grind is stable through the surf and in terms of distance control, the TOUR PREFERRED ATV Grind offers top tier consistency. The design is subtle, the wedge looks professional and confidence inspiring and the raw satin finish makes it look very aggressive.
