Mulatu Astatke (born December 19, 1943) is an Ethiopian jazz percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger, and noted as the founder of Ethio-jazz.
Hailing from the western Ethiopian city of Jimma, young Astatke was sent by his family to study engineering at Lindisfarne College in Wales in the 1950s, however went on to graduate with a degree in music, later studying at the Trinity College of Music in London, UK. In the 1960s the percussionist moved to Boston, U.S. and studied vibraphone and percussion at the Berklee College of Music, where he explored his interest in Latin jazz.
After moving to New York City, U.S., Astatke released a pair of albums “Afro-Latin Soul, Volumes 1& 2” in 1966. The albums featured mainly instrumental songs and was credited for establishing bongo and conga drums as standards in Ethiopian popular music. In 1972 the composer released the album “Mulatu of Ethiopia”, introducing the sound, now known as Ethio-jazz, both in Ethiopia and the U.S. Around this time the percussionist collaborated with revered artists including Mahmoud Ahed and Duke Ellington, which represented the golden age of instrumentation and rhythm in Ethiopia’s pop and jazz circles.
Following the Derg military junta, the majority of Ethio-jazz labels in Ethiopia were forced to flee, including Amha Records, which had release the bulk of Astatke music in the country. The musician kept a relatively low profile during the 1990s, with his music only found in certain underground circles, however he received somewhat of a resurgence in the 2000s among western audiences, thanks to his feature in the 2005 Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers, and being sampled by the likes of Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West and Cut Chemist.
In 2004 Astatke collaborated with the U.S. band Either/Orchestra, subsequently making appearances in Scandinavia, London, New York, Canada and Germany. The percussionist later worked with the London-based collective The Heliocentrics, which featured re-workings of his classic Ethio-jazz material as well as new productions.
Live reviews
Often known as the father of ethio-jazz, multi instrumentalist Mulata Astatke is one of the most infectiously happy performers you're likely to see performing today. At the grand age of 71, the performer blends his traditional instrumentals with Ethiopian inspired rhythms and melodies to create a wonderful, earthy sound onstage. The musician has an incredibly prestigious musical education training in London, New York and Boston. He can also boast as being the first African student at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
These highly tuned skills are visible onstage as Astatke seems to sense and hear every musical vibration from each of his musicians who join him onstage. The vast array of instruments come together to create beautiful, poignant music with those undeniably latin and jazz origins, yet it's when they meet the Ethiopian influence that you can't help but tap your feet to the wonderful beat.
Now a doctorate in music, Mulatu has travelled all over the world spreading his unique sound and teaching about the importance of musical origin and heritage. His traditional tones have been featured in films, most notably 2005's 'Broken Flowers' which meant his audiences grew. This joyful performer welcomes each audience member into his musical zone and leaves each one amazed at the stylings and sounds.

Really enjoyed the gig. The atmosphere was just amazing. All the musicians were interacting in the best possible way on stage and also delivering great solo performances. The venue is just perfect for that type of gigs. I would definitely recommend this artist to other people.

Jun 20 2024, about mulatu astatke.
Mulatu Astatke (born 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger best known as the father of Ethio-jazz. Born in the western Ethiopian city of Jimma, Mulatu trained in London, New York City, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music and became the first African student to enroll at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music from where he received an honourary degree in 2012. Astatke led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums—instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music— other percussion instruments, keyboards and organ. His albums focus primarily on instrumental music, and Astatke appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during Ethiopia’s Golden ’70s. He collaborated with many notable artists in both countries, arranging and playing on recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed, and appearing as a special guest with Duke Ellington during a tour of Ethiopia in 1973. His Western audience expanded even further when the 2005 Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers featured seven of Astatke’s songs. Hip hop artists have also sampled Astatke’s songs extensively, for example in the works of Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West, Cut Chemist, and Knaan. He toured with US band Either/Orchestra in 2006 and in 2008 recorded an album with the Heliocentrics and completed a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University, where he worked on modernizations of traditional Ethiopian instruments and premiered a portion of a new opera, The Yared Opera.

Digital Premiere— Mulatu Astatke in The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing
Mulatu Astatke , vibraphone, percussion, and keyboard James Arben , musical director, saxophonist, and flute Adam O’Farrill , trumpet Jason Lindner , keyboard Tal Mashiach , bass Daniel Freedman , drum
Known as the father of Ethio-jazz, composer and multi-instrumentalist Mulatu Astatke rose to international fame in the 1970s and 1980s with his unique mix of American jazz and Ethiopian music, drawing comparisons to jazz giants Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. Forced off the road for a time due to the political situation in his homeland, he came roaring back in the 1990s, recording and touring as never before. Astatke’s music begins and ends with improvisation and is the product of fearless experimentation. Experience the sounds, rhythms, and textures of this pioneer of Ethiopian jazz in The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing in a performance recorded on September 9, 2016, that JazzTimes called “a spirited and entrancing set that spanned his career and spotlighted his gift for shifting fluidly between intricate, sinuous melodies and airy, atmospheric grooves.”

The father of Ethio-jazz | Oslo Jazzfestival 2023
Born in the western Ethiopian city of Jimma, Mulatu Astatke trained in London, New York City, and Boston where he became the first African student to enroll at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, from where he received an honorary degree in 2012.
Astatke led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums—instruments that he introduced to Ethiopian popular music— alongside other percussion instruments, keyboards and organ. He collaborated with many notable artists in both Ethiopia and the US, arranging and playing on recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed, and appearing as a special guest with Duke Ellington during a tour of Ethiopia in 1973.
Mulatu Astatke bears witness to an extraordinarily rich career that has him hailed as the father of Ethio-jazz. From his musical studies at Trinity College and Berklee, groundbreaking recordings for the legendary Amha label in Addis Abeba’s golden age, to his contribution to a Jim Jarmush film, his adoption by the musical youth of Europe and the States, and sampling by hip hop royalty, Astatke has a unique musical history.
His new album, Sketches of Ethiopia , is an homage to the rhythms and dances of Mulatu Astatke’s homeland that still provide the engine for his music. It’s also evidence that the grand old man of Ethio-jazz is not standing still.
Join us for a magnificent Monday night at Cosmopolite!
