Jon Richardson: The Knitwit | Review of the comic's current stand-up tour

Jon Richardson: The Knitwit

Review of the comic's current stand-up tour

It has been more than three years since The Knitwit was announced, so Jon Richardson admires the admin skills of anyone who has still made it to the right theatre at the right time. This is a comic who values organisational nous.

Not that the first half necessarily feels like it’s been so long in the making, as he simply, if amusingly, recounts stunts you might already have seen him undertake on A League Of Their Own, such as facing Freddie Flintoff’s bowling or trying to score a conversion a Twickenham. He’s not, of course, a traditionally sporty guy, so it’s dependable fish-out-of-water stuff.

The showbiz anecdote nature of this section is spiced up with some uncharacteristically savage attacks on celebrities. It’s often for no real reason, playing up to the fact that ‘petty’ is a less attractive aspect of his pernicketiness. However, in Ant & Dec’s case, he has just cause in sniping at their greed in advertising a bank when they’re already super-wealthy.

Such flecks of grit stop the first half from being quite so cosy as his trademark cardigan, although it remains a largely gentle, soft-hitting affair, with only the memories of childhood PE lessons – and a special awakening – proving memorable

In the second half, domestic tensions prove a much richer seam, even if many fans will have already seen the fictionalised version of his marriage on TV. His wife, Lucy Beaumont , writes Dave’s fake reality show Meet The Richardsons, so this, perhaps, is his right to reply.

As his fastidiousness butts up against her more laissez-faire attitude, he wonders whether opposites really do attract. The Nespresso-style coffee machine is a particular flashpoint, as is giving their daughter a banana she won’t eat. Think of the food waste!

As he turns 40, he says his young daughter has provided an antidote to his buttoned-down tendencies. It’s hard to be too much of a stickler when you have a toddler, and his sign-off routine here has a focus on his bumhole that he admits he’d probably not have done without her.

It may not be the most sophisticated of subjects, but that it plays against his usually repressed ways – ‘anal’ in an entirely different way – gives it a boost. And he does nail the unedifying topic with precision and skill.

Richardson has such a well-defined persona of grouchy pedantry that even with this slight expansion of his comic horizons, The Knitwit can feel as safe as his risk-averse image.

But then a savvy bit of writing will cut through, such as the delightful image of him delving deeper into the digital channels late at night only to be confronted with a ‘ younger and less competent’ version of himself in ever-ageing repeats. He’s undoubtedly competent now, dependably, relateably funny… even if some of his grumbles would benefit from a little more bite.

Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont.

Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont: ‘All couples argue – but we put our arguments on TV’

Meet the Richardsons sees the married standups play fictional versions of themselves – but that doesn’t mean reality doesn’t creep in from time to time

“W e don’t stay in posh hotels in London,” says Jon Richardson . In a posh hotel in London. “We’re not celebrities really, are we?” adds his wife, Lucy Beaumont. “We’re just us. We don’t really hang out in London and go to premieres.” She pauses. “Like the one we’re going to tonight.”

What’s this? Have I trapped Britain’s best-loved comedy couple in an instance of rank hypocrisy? Richardson and Beaumont, for those unfamiliar, are standup comics (and in Richardson’s case, panel show royalty as an ex-team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats) who also co-host Channel 4’s Jon & Lucy’s Odd Couples, casting judgment on other celeb relationships from their lofty celeb-relationship pinnacle. They are also stars of the hit mockumentary Meet the Richardsons , which chronicles their married life – or a fictional version thereof.

That show majors in the tension between their fame and their glamour-free domestic life – and it’s the VIP launch of its new series that justifies all this current London luxury, albeit for one day only. If the show is to be believed, they’ll soon be back in the north of England squabbling, being parents, being neighbours and trying to catch a break in the rough and tough entertainment world. But is the show to be believed? “None of it is real,” says Beaumont. “But we enjoy making it seem as if it is.” Another pause. “But then some things are.”

The series started life when its producer saw Jon and Lucy grumbling at each other on a TV show called Married to a Celebrity. He proposed a mockumentary following the couple around at a particular moment in their shared lives. “We lived in a little village in West Yorkshire in the middle of nowhere,” says Beaumont. “Neither of us worked much. I was getting back into things after having a daughter, and you [Jon] were doing bits. But we were cut off. And we were hanging out with our neighbours.”

Those neighbours were cast in the show alongside Beaumont’s larger-than-life mum (the playwright Gill Adams), and a roster of celeb pals (Rob Beckett, Johnny Vegas, David Tennant) appearing as themselves, while Jon and Lucy made hapless efforts to rebuild their TV careers. What has emerged over four series is a show that’s carved out its own comic niche in the same ballpark as Curb Your Enthusiasm but with added talking heads, droll cutaways and moments of “unadulterated documentary”, says Richardson, amid the semi-scripted larks. Most importantly, it’s “a high gag-rate comedy show”, he says, and when he’s filming, “if I can see the crew aren’t laughing, it’s not in the show. They should be laughing.”

Beaumont agrees: “I was getting annoyed with comedy-drama. I felt like sitcom needed to get back to making people laugh every three lines.” It is Beaumont – also the co-creator of the recent Channel 4 comedy Hullraisers about her home town – who writes the show, alongside Peter Kay’s Car Share co-creator Tim Reid.

‘Jon and Lucy’ meet their public in a scene from series four of Meet the Richardsons.

Richardson’s role, he tells me, “is to be humiliated and look embarrassed”. Meet the Richardsons provides him with ample opportunity, as he bursts into flames at a children’s party while dressed as a monkey, or – in the new series – disappoints his comedy hero, Ben Elton. Is it right to assume his haplessness and Beaumont’s career anxiety are all exaggerated for comic effect (she has, after all, been nominated for a Bafta for her performance)? “That’s Lucy’s skill as a writer,” says Richardson. “To understand that sitcom is driven by a need. If we’re successful and happy and calm, you lose that fundamental element of comedy.”

That said, “we went to Center Parcs recently,” says Beaumont, “and a lady in the toilet said to me: ‘Isn’t it nice that your husband’s let you be on telly with him?’ And you’re just like: ‘OK, I can now go away and write a scene.’” Even in real life, she says, “I very much still feel like the jealous wife who’s hungry for a career.”

But she also feels – much to the consternation of the show’s publicist, within earshot – that Meet the Richardsons is becoming too career-focused. “The new series is too work-based,” she says. “It’s my least favourite.”

“You liked it in series one,” shoots back Richardson, “and you haven’t liked it since.”

“We’re missing a bit of dock pudding,” says Beaumont – referring to the show’s second episode, when the duo judged the (real, not fictional) World Dock Pudding cookery competition in Hebden Bridge. “I was like: this is exactly what I want to be making,” says Beaumont. “I like it less when the show recreates a celebrity thing we’ve been to – I like it when we’re interacting with real people.”

Watching the show, you can’t help but wonder how it affects the couple’s real-life relationship, and whether there might be aspects of their private life they’d prefer to keep behind closed doors. Richardson says not really. “In series four, I shit myself in the car. So it’s difficult to know what I would veto.”

after newsletter promotion

For Beaumont, it’s not an issue – because their lives in Meet the Richardsons are separate from the private reality. (Their TV house is not their real house. Their TV daughter is an actor.) Not that their fans see it that way. “Because we’re playing ourselves,” says Beaumont, “I do think people come up to us more [in public] and assume they know us. Definitely.”

‘Jon and Lucy’ have a meeting at UKTV about the new series in Meet the Richardsons.

That’s not a bad thing, she says – and Richardson too can see upsides to their unusual televised lives. “Every couple argues,” he says, “but we have an end product for our arguments. We hone them then put them on TV. And then it’s like: ‘Oh, perhaps we weren’t arguing – perhaps we were just working on a routine.’”

Are they concerned about becoming more famous as a couple than as individuals? “As long as I can do standup, which is such a pure selfish moment, I don’t mind,” says Richardson, now celebrating 20 years as one of the UK’s finest comic curmudgeons. “As long as I can tour, and that’s just my voice – well, that’s such a privilege.” Beaumont, too, nominated best newcomer at the Edinburgh fringe back in 2014 , is embarking on a standup tour. Its title, The Trouble and Strife, suggests no great desire to slough off the Richardsons connection.

This first foray into standup in a decade has raised old demons for Beaumont, which her new career as a successful TV writer has yet to slay. “I know now,” she says, “that what put me off standup was the horrific misogyny that I suffered.” Only a decade ago, she says, promoters still didn’t want to book female comics; comperes introduced them with an apology and “you’d get on stage and the audience would instantly look embarrassed before you said anything. Or they would use you as the time to go to the toilet.”

It led to her convincing herself “that I don’t belong here, I’m not good enough, I’m not funny”. Four series of a hit TV show later, she says, “I still have all that in my head whenever I do anything. And it’s really frustrating that men don’t. So my thing with the new tour is I just want to make it” – like Meet the Richardsons before it – “the funniest thing it can be.”

Meet the Richardsons starts 6 April , 10pm, Dave & UKTV Play.

The couple have one seven-year-old daughter, Elsie Louise, who was born in 2016.

They began dating in 2013 after meeting through fellow comedian Roisin Conaty , before they married in April 2015.

In their comedy show, they play “exaggerated versions of themselves” as they deliver a window into their home and work lives. It returned to UKTV’s Dave on April 8 for its fifth series.

The pair also starred in Jon & Lucy's Christmas Sleepover on Channel 4

Beaumont , who is an actress as well as a stand-up comedian, was nominated for a Bafta TV award for the show in 2023 for the female performance in a comedy programme category.

‘Fighting is not real’

She explained last year that viewers of the show do not “seem to realise that their fighting is not real”.

“I don’t henpeck – we wouldn’t have lasted this long if I was as mean to him in real life. You don’t want to see a smug couple in love, in a nice house, with a stable career and a lovely little child. Who wants to see that?”

She added: “The world we’ve got around us is slightly bizarre but I think people still feel like they recognise themselves in it, which is good.”

The comedian also described Meet the Richardsons as “an excuse for us to channel tensions into comedy” but that the laughter helps the audience “realise it’s all nonsense”.

During her career, the 40-year-old has featured on a number of comedy panel shows, including Have I Got News for You , Would I Lie to You? and The Last Leg.

Richardson , 41, is also known for his appearances on panel shows and was previously a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats.

In 2018 he launched the panel show Jon Richardson: Ultimate Worrier, which ran on Dave for two series, and he has previously co-hosted with Russell Howard on BBC Radio 6 Music.

The couple also entertained viewers together when they starred on Celebrity Gogglebox.

Their TV comedy Meet the Richardsons based on their real-life marriage has brought them legions of fans and awards but, just days after its fifth season debut, its stars Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont have announced they are to divorce.

In a statement shared on social media , they announced the split:

“We have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go our separate ways.

The couple, who married in 2015, debuted their mockumentary comedy in 2020. The show sees them play exaggerated versions of themselves, with other comedians and familiar faces on British TV making guest appearances.

Independently, both are comedians. Beaumont has appeared on numerous panel shows and bases many of her jokes on her home city of Hull in the north of England. Her role in Meet the Richardsons brought her a BAFTA nomination for comedy performance in 2023.

Richardson was the host of Jon Richardson: Ultimate Worrier , which ran for two series, also on Dave.

The Times of London reports that, in an interview last year, Beaumont said the couple’s fictional personas for the show, which sees them frequently engaged in bickering with each other, were not a true reflection of their real-life relationship.

Olly Murs reveals ‘intense plan’ to make a mad dash to his baby’s birth while touring

Olly Murs

Things really are on the Up for Olly Murs as the singer and his heavily pregnant wife, Amelia, prepare to welcome their first child into the world . Here, Murs, 39, tells us about impending fatherhood, the prospect of turning 40 and hitting the road with Take That.

Just to warn you, I am in a bit of pain. I went paintballing for my brother’s stag do and I’m covered in bruises.

It’s horrible, because the more you scream, the more people hit you.

What were you put through on your stag ?

I went to Croatia , to a place called Hvar. The guys had me wearing all sorts of outfits [including] a stag shirt with different things you had to do as challenges, from getting a girl to put makeup on you, to kissing a bald head. The last one was to drink a pint out of a stranger’s sock… quite disgusting, actually.

You’re about to go on tour with Take That. Did your heart skip a beat when they asked you to join them?

Olly Murs

It was funny because Gary [Barlow] emailed me and said, “Olly, I’ve been told there’s this idea of us going on tour together next year, that you’d come on and be a special guest. Is that true?” I said, “Yeah.” He goes, “But you did an arena tour last year – I’m confused.” I went, “Gary, I would be honoured to be on tour with you guys, I see this as a bucket-list thing.”

They’re such iconic artists, and a band that I grew up listening to. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Gary. I’ve been friends with Robbie [Williams] as well, who was obviously part of Take That. Mark [Owen], I did Soccer Aid with a few times, and Howard [Donald] is great, I see him at Manchester United. It just comes at a really good time, perfect to be a part of it.

Do you have a favourite Take That song?

When I did X Factor in 2009, I waited at the O2 all day… got in front of the guy, the producer, and he asked me, “What song are you going to sing?” I said, “Paolo Nutini’s New Shoes.” He went, “If I have to hear Paolo’s New Shoes, Kings of Leon, or Bridge Over f***ing Troubled Water again, I’m going to lose my head. Can you sing another song?”

I sung [Stevie Wonder’s] Superstition, got a yes. When I finished, he said, “Look, piece of advice, in your next audition [in front of the judges], sing that song and a Take That song, and you’ll be fine.” So, I did a song called Up All Night, that was my backup… I’ve never told anyone that before.

Take That's Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen on stage

What is the most memorable thing that’s happened to you on the road?

When I toured America with One Direction. That is probably something that I’ll never experience again. We had thousands of fans following buses, running down the street after cars, and then realising it was me and not Niall Horan [laughs]. You got girls going through garbage trucks, bins at hotels, and we had top-end security at every hotel we went to… we’re turning up at Universal Studios, Florida, and it’s all closed down, just for me and 1D to go round and use the rides. That level of madness. Even I felt like an international superstar for five minutes.

Congratulations on soon becoming a dad . In terms of the logistics of touring, I’m assuming you have a plan of action for when the baby is born…

There’s quite an intense plan in place, which has been a stress, I think, for my tour manager and management team. What will be, will be… when it comes, it comes, whether it’s in the middle of a show, or not. We planned this tour way before the baby was a thought, so now’s it’s here, it’s happening. You know in Home Alone, when they’re running through the airport, that music, that

chaos? That is me. That’s what I’ll be like, heading back from wherever in the country to the birth of my baby.

What are you looking forward to about being a father? Anything you’re not prepared for?

That, at some point, your child is going to hate you. That scares me a bit. But also, I understand that, because at some point there’s times when I hated my parents. Not hate as in a real dark kinda hate. It’s more, you have to be the bad guy sometimes… trying to be a dad and a best friend, if I can find that balance, that will be great.

Olly Murs with wife Amelia showing her baby bump

It’ll be when they’re going through their (ahem) Troublemaker phase… will you be going down the celebrity baby name route, with something inspired by fruit or vegetables? No one’s christened their kid Broccoli yet, so that’s up for grabs.

[Laughs]. Well, listen, me and Amelia love our greens, so that’s possible! No, we’ve not gone down that route… we’ve really thought about, you know, from nicknames, to what they might be called at school, and what they might think at 18, 19, 20. We’ve got some really beautiful, amazing names. You’ll have to wait and see.

What are your music plans? Can we expect a follow-up to your 2022 album Marry Me in the foreseeable future?

Now, the most important thing in my life is Amelia, who’s pregnant, and the second most important thing is that the baby comes safe, and then after that being a dad… I love the music and I’ll continue to do it, but when I’m doing an album, I need to be in it. At the moment, I’d say I’m not really in it. For example, if I just turn this camera round [turns the camera to show a baby’s cot], that’s what I’m in: cots. That’s what we’re up to these days.

You also turn 40 next month (May 14). How do you feel about growing older? I’m 38 and I’ve started investing in all the retinols to hold back Father Time.

I mean, 40, 40s, you start seeing things. The grey hairs start to come through, your nostril hairs, ear hairs… you’re having to trim areas of your body you didn’t think you’d have to [laughs]. Them sort of things are a bit worrying, but I’m embracing it. I’ve always – the last three or four years – put my body first, my health first, training well, eating well… you reap the benefits of that.

Olly Murs performing

Can you remember a standout encounter you’ve had with a fan?

I’ve had so many beautiful moments. Some really sad moments as well. I was with a woman recently, her son [died by] suicide. We were at a retreat in Essex, and this lovely lady came in and sat with me in a sauna…

I said, “What brings you here?” She said, “Oh, I’m here because my son [died by] suicide a few years ago. I’m just here to sort of rebuild me life.” We just had a chat about suicide and chatted about people that we’d lost.

Obviously, I spoke about Caroline [Flack], and what I went through, my own personal experience… I don’t know how she felt, but it was like she needed to talk to me, and I said to her, “The most important thing is that you talk about it, the fact that me and you, two strangers that met today in a [sauna], pretty much in our swim gear, sweating” – it was one of them really funny conversations where at the end we were laughing, “We need to get out,” because we were both absolutely [dripping with] sweat!

‘The Wiz’ Review: In a New Broadway Revival, Dorothy and Friends Get Lost in a Hypercolor Whirligig

The Wiz review Broadway

A flight of imagination born of the trippy 1970s, “ The Wiz ” can shoulder a lot of interpretation. Sidney Lumet’s shadowy film, starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, sets the Black spin on L. Frank Baum’s children’s story “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” in a blighted, nearly bombed-out New York City. High schools and community theaters have surely long made do with their prop closets, as the musical by William F. Brown (book) and Charlie Smalls (music and lyrics) is a vibes-based vehicle for a familiar plot and foolproof hits like “Home” and “You Can’t Win.”

Popular on Variety

But that opportunity for connection swiftly gets swept away in the one-way twister to Oz, where a hypercolor surge of stimulation competes for audience attention. Excess is the defining trait of a fantastical realm otherwise lacking a unified look: storybook scenery (by “Black Panther” designer Hannah Beachler) contrasts with uncanny projections (by Daniel Brodie) that resemble Roku City crossed with Middle Earth; costumes (by Sheren Davis) burst with embellishments in yellow, orange, turquoise and pink. The already itinerant plot feels all the more disjointed when each scene appears to take place in a different CGI-augmented world.

Part of the problem may be technical; it is often difficult to hear Smalls’ lyrics over the orchestra’s wall of sound except when the actors are belting over it. That includes Deborah Cox, whose instrument is unmistakable but overpowered in her first appearance as Glinda. Lewis, who has an appealing, delicate voice and a modest presence, comes to feel like a background player in her own adventure (perhaps ditching Toto from the script doesn’t help). Among the principals, Richardson is a standout with his liquid, riffy take on “What Would I Do if I Could Feel” and joint-swiveling way with JaQuel Knight’s invigorating choreography.

Hip-hop moves provide the production’s most electrifying moments, particularly in “The Emerald City” sequence, which also includes soulful steps in the spirit of the ‘70s source material. As the title character, figured here as a suave charmer, Wayne Brady also demonstrates an impressive, hip-popping dexterity.

Revisions to the book, by comedian Amber Ruffin , elaborate the backstories of Dorothy’s friends, though trying to make more sense of the head-scratching plot is probably futile. Sustained attempts at updated humor are intermittently successful; they ask for a degree of knowing side-eye from a production that is unwaveringly earnest and cheerful. Even the arrival of the Poppies, a transparent metaphor for vice, is oddly staged on a set of cubby shelves that appear lifted from a school classroom.

Without the dark, threatening corners, this Oz comes across more like a playground than a coming-of-age purgatory (the last wicked witch standing, Betts’ Evillene, registers as mildly menacing and is defeated with a small splash). Why does this Dorothy want to go home and what has she learned? If she was looking for somewhere to belong, she seems to have found just the place. But maybe her senses could use a break.
