Himiko cruise

The leiji matsumoto boat ride in tokyo.

Himiko Cruise is a themed boat ride on the Sumida River, between Asakusa and Odaiba in the east of Tokyo. The futuristic setting was designed by famous manga artist Leiji Matsumoto.

When traveling in the Japanese capital, it's impossible not to cross the vast Sumida River flowing down eastern Tokyo . Along several stations of the Yamanote line (from a few hundred meters), Sumida river can be appreciated in Asakusa and Ryogoku, up to Hama-Rikyu gardens and Tsukishima where it flows into Tokyo bay before arriving at Odaiba . Sumidagawa is very present in Tokyo, and of course cruises are organized, especially by Suijo and its famous " Tokyo Cruise " which includes a dozen shuttles.

Futuristic design boats

For fans of Japanese popular culture , the most attractive of them is undoubtedly Himiko, named after the eponymous queen. This boat has a peculiarity: it was designed by mangaka Leiji Matsumoto , father of Yamato , Captain Harlock , Galaxy Express or Interstella (for Daft Punk). This is what explains the ship's unique design (both outside and inside) and the special atmosphere of the cruise, getting a very strong footprint from its master.

Thus, there are countless keys of his artistic touch, from the glass ceilings and Ginga Tetsudô figures, to commentary made by some of its original voice actors. Note that there is a slightly improved version of Himiko boat, called Hotaluna , which allows to go up on the deck if the weather permits.

Himiko Cruise (Tokyo), Night view on Rainbow Bridge from the pier at Odaiba Seaside Park

Going to Odaiba by the sea

The rate charged to take advantage of this particular trip is not cheap, but it offers a moment to share and allows to cut off a tiring tour of Tokyo. To reach Odaiba from Asakusa for example, this is a fun alternative to train  🚅 transfers. By day, the view is excellent on several monuments, such as the Rainbow Bridge, and changes the angle of approach.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

himiko cruise

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

himiko cruise

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

himiko cruise

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

himiko cruise

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. Cutouts of Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999 characters aboard Himiko.

Sumida River Cruise Ship

Travel in style along the Sumida River in Tokyo

Ash

While it won’t get you from Point A to Point B quite as quickly as the train, the Tokyo Cruise Ship service (also called the Suijou Bus, or Water Bus ) is the way to travel in style along the Sumida River from Asakusa . With their fleet of 11 ships on 7 routes, you can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Asakusa, Hinode Pier in Shinagawa, Hamarikyu Pier in Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba Seaside Park , Tokyo Big Sight or Palette Town in Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park .

The futuristic cruise ship Himiko is the face of the fleet, running on the Asakusa-Odaiba Direct Line. Designed by Matsumoto Leiji, the famous artist behind the manga Galaxy Express 999, characters from the series stand on Himiko’s inner deck. Other ships, such as the sophisticated Jubilee and the new samurai ship Atakemaru are also popular.

Fares are based on distance and range from 200 yen for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Piers) to 2,000 yen (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu). Atakemaru , the newest route and ship, features an “ordinary” rate of 1,000 yen for adults (1,500 for a round-trip) on its route from Hinode to Odaiba, but also has a “special room” rate of 1,500 yen (2,000 round trip) that allow you to enjoy a more comfortable ride for the 40-minute trip. Bento boxes may be reserved in advance for groups of 20 or more.

One thing to watch out for is that the water bus services end relatively early in the evening, and if you are looking to spend time at your destination, you may wish to take the train back to your lodgings. However, there’s nothing quite like a summer day on the river, passing under the Sumida Bridges. Refreshments, even alcohol, are available on the water buses and a guide will provide information about the area as you cruise. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, and will give you a view of Tokyo that you simply can’t find anywhere else!

Tokyo Cruise Ship Himiko

The sightseeing ship Himiko was designed by Leiji Matsumoto, a manga artist known for Space Battleship Yamato and other works. It is popular among couples, children and adults alike.

Three characters from “The Galaxy Express 999”, Tetsuro, Mater and the conductor, explain the scenery of the Sumida River.

You can also enjoy the view of Tokyo Bay, including the Odaiba area .

There is an observation window on the ceiling that allows you to look out at the sky.

The tour takes 45 minutes and it’s a convenient way to travel between Odaiba to the Tokyo Skytree and the Asakusa area.

Travel in style along the Sumida River in Tokyo

himiko cruise

Tokyo Water Bus

himiko cruise

Located on a bay and covered with a network of rivers and canals, Tokyo has a few boat services that tourists may find useful. The Water Bus (oX, Suijō Basu) can be an enjoyable alternative to trains or subways when traveling between destinations near the water.

The locations most notably convenient for water bus access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay, especially Odaiba . Many water buses also travel along the Sumida River, one of the city's most famous rivers. The many bridges that span the river have each a different design. Boats along the river provide access to Asakusa and Ryogoku .

The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain days.

Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa. The cost depends on the section traveled and is typically between 1000 and 2500 yen.

himiko cruise

Some other water bus lines are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. The Mizube Cruise Line travels from Asakusa on the Sumida River via Ryogoku to Odaiba . Only on selected days, service is also provided between Odaiba and Kasai Rinkai Park .

There are some other cruises available that include lunch or dinner for customers to enjoy a meal on the water. These cruises usually take about two hours and make a round trip that ends at the departure point. Prices depend on the meal and typically vary from 6,000 to 15,000 yen.

Getting there and around

Asakusa Pier The pier is located along the Sumida River, just beside the Asakusa Stations of the Ginza Subway Line and the Tobu Line or a five minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Asakusa Subway Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Asakusa page .

Odaiba Pier The pier is located just in front of the Aquacity Odaiba shopping mall, about a five minute walk from either Daiba Station or Odaiba-Kaihinkoen Station on the Yurikamome Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Odaiba page .

Hinode Pier The pier is a five minute walk north from Hinode Station on the Yurikamome Line, which can be accessed from Shimbashi Station (5 minutes, 260 yen, along the JR Yamanote Line ).

Hama Rikyu Pier The pier is located within Hama Rikyu garden . Currently it is not possible to board water buses at Hama Rikyu, but only to get off.

Reasonable price

“Himiko” is water-bus connecting Asakusa known as a famous tourist spot and Odaiba, Toyosu. You will probably think of traveling by water as expensive, but this is very reasonable prices. Moving by water-bus is not only you can enjoy unusual scenery of Tokyo, also you feel a delicious breeze.

Designed by well known comic writer

I am sure that it will become a great memory for you if you use Himiko. Himiko was designed by well known comic writer Matsumoto Reiji, and has the appearance, such as the spacecraft using a metallic material.

Characters of “Galaxy Express 999”

You can take pictures with the cartoon characters of “Galaxy Express 999” inside of the ship.

Cityscape of Asakusa from a ship

The required time is approximately 50 minutes from Asakusa to the Hinode-sanbashi (pier), approximately 40 minutes to Odaiba. It takes more time than a train, but you arrive without worrying about time while exploring inboard, looking at the outside of the ship, and hear an announcement. There is new discovery and is fun as for looking at cityscape of Asakusa from a ship

himikotokyocruise11

The Hotaruna

The Himiko has already been famous for years in the Sumida River, in fact the ship which Reiji Matsumoto designed newly came up. That is “The Hotaruna”. The futuristic design reminiscent of a spaceship like Himiko, and the promenade deck which there was not set up to Himiko, so you can look in all directions outside of the ship.

Suijo Bus in Asakusa | Time Out Tokyo

Opt for a bus ride on water

Hop on a boat to see the rivers and waterways of Tokyo this summer

Youka Nagase

Trains are obviously the most popular form of public transport in Tokyo, but if you have the time why not avoid the squeeze and take to the water to get around instead? These are our favourite water-based transportation options, which not only take you from A to B but also work as casual sightseeing trips.

Himiko by Tokyo Cruise

This eye-catching water bus boasts a cartoonish look courtesy of manga artist Leiji Matsumoto. The streamlined body is based on the image of a teardrop, giving it a futuristic look, and the glass-heavy sides and roof mean you can enjoy great views of Tokyo while cruising through the city. Himiko takes you from Asakusa to Odaiba or Toyosu and back, with boarding stops at Asakusa and Odaiba Seaside Park. A one-way ticket for adults costs ¥1,560, children aged six to 12 pay ¥930 and children under six ¥300. Tickets from  suijobus.co.jp

Hotaluna by Tokyo Cruise

A revamped version of Himiko, Hotaluna looks like a spaceship with its silver, ultra-streamlined silhouette. You can walk around the deck of the boat and enjoy the views outdoors, perhaps accompanied by a vanilla gelato, served in a mille-feuille cone with rich espresso poured on top – the perfect pick-me-up on a hot summer’s day. A trip from Asakusa via Hinode Pier to Odaiba costs ¥1,560, Asakusa-Hinode is ¥1,080, and Hinode to Odaiba will set you back ¥780. Children ride for half price. Tickets from  suijobus.co.jp

Kawasemi Waterbus by Tokyo Mizube Cruising Line

If you’re looking for a more intimate ride, it’s all aboard the Kawasemi Waterbus, which only has a capacity of 64. Its compact size means it can make its way through the city’s many narrow waterways, offering views the big boys cannot. You can choose either their Nihonbashi/Kanda River Cruise (adults ¥2,060, children ¥1,030), or the Asakusa-Nihonbashi Cruise (prices vary by distance). The former justifies its extra cost with a rare glimpse of Tokyo’s smaller canals complete with beautiful bridges. Tickets from  tokyo-park.or.jp/waterbus/english/index.html

Asakusa-Odaiba Cruise by Tokyo Mizube Cruising Line

This cruise starts at Ryogoku, also known as Sumo Town, and swans along the Sumida River to Asakusa before heading to Odaiba and back to Ryogoku – roughly an hour’s worth of cruising. The views of Kachidoki’s towers and Rainbow Bridge from the river are pretty spectacular. Fares start from ¥310, but can go up to ¥2,160 depending on where you get off. Playing with extra cash? Add a meal plan for lunch or dinner at a restaurant near Asakusa, Odaiba, Ryogoku or Kasai (check the website for a list of options). Tickets from  tokyo-park.or.jp/waterbus/english/index.html

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
