A North Norfolk village has been named as one of the "most beautiful" in the UK in a list published by a popular luxury travel magazine.

Burnham Market, located near the north Norfolk coast, was ranked at number 15 on the esteemed list which was compiled by Conde Nast Traveller .

The village was praised for its "smart" high street as well as its "redbrick houses, colourful windows and old-fashioned shopping" offered by some of its independent stores.

The magazine said: "Walk the length of Burnham Market's smart high street, with its redbrick houses and colourful windows, for an exercise in old-fashioned shopping. There's a post office, butcher, hardware shop and fishmongers.

"But it's not all essentials, among the assortment of independent shops is The Hat Shop, an emporium of thousands of flamboyant bits of head wear to marvel at.

"For lunch, join the queue at The Crab Hut three miles away on Brancaster Staithe harbour, where baguettes are stuffed with crab, prawns and lobster, before heading on for a bracing walk on Brancaster beach."

The picturesque village has received lots of accolades over the years, one of which was being named among the 'poshest places to live' in the UK by The Telegraph, which dubbed the village "Chelsea-on-Sea".

It's also one of the most expensive places to own a home in the county, with estate agent Savills estimating an average house price of £826,770 in the village.

Norfolk’s foodie hotspots

The Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market

Elk room at the Gunton Arms Thorpe Market

No bon viveur's Norfolk itinerary is complete these days without The Gunton Arms. A hunting lodge re-imagined as a pub with rooms in 2011, it is high on wit, and the modern art collection worth visiting in its own right. What continues to draw Londoners and Norfolk-dwellers alike is the menu's artisanal earthiness. Some is cooked before your eyes on a vast open fire in the Elk Room. Ease down Aberdeen Angus rib of beef and potatoes roasted in goose fat, barbecued beef brisket with chips or venison sausages and mash, with Green Jack beer.

The Neptune, Old Hunstanton

The Neptune Old Hunstanton

This pretty redbrick 18th-century former coaching inn is tucked into a crook in the Cromer Road as it reaches Old Hunstanton. Recreated as an intimate restaurant with rooms, chef-patron Kevin Mangeolles holds one Michelin star (of only two in the county) for imaginatively harnessing what he calls 'the larder' of local produce, including game from Sandringham. Venison loin, confit of haunch, cabbage, butternut squash puree and 'Dauphine potatoes' might precede milk-chocolate Bavarois, blueberry compote, dark chocolate sorbet. Six rooms above, plus a cottage, are fresh and seasidey.

Old Town Hall House, Cley-Next-The-Sea

Spoonbill bedroom at Old Town Hall House Cley

Contemporary furnishings collide happily with folk art at this sleek guesthouse which opened in September 2014, in a Victorian town hall. One half of the owning partnership, chef James Walker, arrived from London via Le Pont de la Tour, Bob Bob Ricard and The Don. Breakfast might well involve rare-breed bacon, but his pièce de résistance is a weekly gourmet supper club. Local residents pounce - for fish soup with rouille and Gruyère croutons, duck with smoked beetroot and truffle sauce, and spiced ginger pudding mi-cuit with vanilla and orange cream - as soon as new dates are announced.

No secret among local residents and weekenders in nearby Burnham Market, but this family-run restaurant in a roadside pub still hovers below the radar. Remember the name, because talented chef Ben Handley, his wife Sarah and brother Sam have created a go-to destination for exciting food in unassuming surroundings. Rosary Ash goat's cheese, textures of beetroot, sherry vinegar, toasted seeds; pan-roast rump of lamb, crispy braised shoulder, celeriac, baby jacket potatoes, lamb jus noisette, and pear tarte tatin and cinnamon mascarpone will all arrive as delicate artistry on a plate.

Wiveton Hall, Wiveton, Holt

Caf at Wiveton Hall Holt

If only fiddling on a smartphone for lunchtime inspiration could always yield such joyful allure as this farm shop, café, and pick-your-own farm. Bookmark it, so you can keep breakfast supplies of soft fruit and Wiveton Hall raspberry jam topped up in your summer holiday home, and punctuate trips to Blakeney's beaches with a café stop for slow-roasted black Russian tomatoes on toasted sourdough with pesto or Weybourne crab salad with homemade mayonnaise. It's simple food packed with homegrown flavour. Seasonal opening.
