How to get there, what islands to visit, getting around.

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an archipelago stretched out across 500 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. With turquoise waters , warm, salty breezes, and plenty of opportunities to mingle with fun-loving locals, it’s a well-favored Caribbean island destination — perhaps especially for those living along the eastern seaboard, which is connected to the Bahamas via abundant direct flights. Even if you are coming from farther away, this island chain is worth the journey.

“We have always been known for our beautiful beaches and weather; I'm glad that more travelers want to experience something even more valuable than that — the Bahamian people,” Kya Nguyen told Travel + Leisure. Nguyen is a local tour guide who can trace her family’s island lineage back several generations. In fact, her last name has been linked to Blackbeard’s crew.

“People also love and appreciate our nature and wildlife. Guests always remark on the curly tailed lizards, and my young pineapples are a favorite photo opp,” Nguyen added. Another sight Nguyen says to prioritize? "Junkanoo, a uniquely Bahamian street parade celebrating music, dance, and freedom. There are parades and events throughout the islands that hold a similar name — Jonkonnu in Jamaica, John Canoe in Belize. But there's only one Bahamian Junkanoo experience, and it's on Bay Street [in Nassau].”

From famed spots like Pink Sand Beach to world-class, family-friendly accommodations at Atlantis on Paradise Island, every inch of the Bahamas is an inch to explore. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a trip to the Bahamas .

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Atlantis is one of the most popular resorts in the Bahamas and includes the 141-acre Aquaventure water park, a casino, a golf course, and more.
  • Graycliff is a five-star dining experience set in an 18th-century mansion.
  • Lucayan National Park boasts impressive wildlife and fun activities, including kayaking through its mangrove trees.
  • Check out the Anchor Bay Fish Fry, held every Friday, for deliciously fried fish and other local dishes.
  • Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island is the perfect Instagram spot, with pink sand made from seashells and microscopic organisms called foraminifera.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Atlantis on paradise island.

Atlantis is one of the most popular resorts in the Bahamas — Prince William and Kate Middleton even spent the night here during their tour of the Caribbean. There are five different hotels on the massive property, so guests can choose the vibe that's right for them.

Baha Mar on the island of New Providence is one of the beloved (and convenient) resort options for those flying into Nassau, as it's a short drive from the airport. The 1,000-acre luxury resort is home to three different luxury hotels, plus 15 acres of private beachfront for guests to enjoy, and a new waterpark. Baha Mar also has satellite properties on other islands, including Bimini and Harbour Island.

Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

T+L readers voted Kamalame Cay one of their favorite hotels in the 2022 World’s Best Awards, likely thanks to the property's sense of solitude. One reader noted that the 96-acre resort isn’t exactly easy to get to, but relaxing in a beachfront villa without another soul in sight makes the trek worthwhile.

Best Things to Do

Hit the beach.

You will surely spend some time at the beach if you've come to the Bahamas. Luckily, all of the Bahamian islands have beautiful beaches to choose from. If we had to suggest a specific one, it would be the highly photogenic Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island. This three-mile stretch of soft, pink sand — which gets its color from seashells and microscopic organisms called foraminifera — is a place to go for total relaxation. Bring a book, or just plan on spending your time staring at your gorgeous surroundings in total awe.

Charter a boat

Get out and experience the azure waters surrounding the Bahamas by booking a day trip on a boat, or chartering a private vessel with a captain who will happily lead you on a dive or snorkel adventure. Deep-sea fishing excursions are also available via chartered boat.

Get a day pass to Atlantis

You don't have to be an overnight guest to experience the fun that Atlantis resort has to offer. All you need to do is purchase a day pass, and you'll have access to the thrilling 141-acre Aquaventure water park , which includes pools, beaches, a rapid river, and waterslides. If that's not enough, try your luck in the casino, play a round of golf, or have a meal at one of multiple on-site restaurants.

Explore a national park

Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama Island is another must-see spot. Here, visitors can kayak through mangroves or simply go for a stroll, spotting local flora and fauna.

Best Restaurants

For a five-star dining experience, book a table at Graycliff , an upscale restaurant set in an 18th-century mansion on West Hill Street in Nassau. Expect conch soup and lobster, plus plenty of freshly caught fish.

Anchor Bay Fish Fry

For a more low-key dining experience, head to Anchor Bay in Governor's Harbour for its beloved fish fry. The event is held every Friday and includes plates of fried fish and other local delicacies.

Travelers will have one more meal to dress up for at Dune , located at The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort. With a menu by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, expect delicious offerings like yellowfin tartare, shrimp satay, and roasted grouper with lime chili sauce.

Peak season lasts from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is at its most glorious. This is also when crowds descend on the islands, so you'll have to contend with higher prices and other tourists.

It never gets much colder than 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the Bahamas, so there's not really a "bad" time to visit. Do keep in mind that the Atlantic hurricane season stretches from June to November, though, which is worth considering when you're booking your trip.

The summer months are also rainy, but there will be fewer visitors and more affordable rates. Tourist numbers dip lowest in September and October, so plan a trip during these months if you want to visit the Bahamas when crowds are at their thinnest.

Plenty of travelers fly into the Caribbean — there are 20 international airports across the islands, with regularly scheduled flights from around the world. Nassau is the most connected destination, while getting to the Out Islands can be a bit more complicated (though totally worth it). Your flight to the Out Islands will probably connect via Nassau. Private charters are a popular option, too.

Cruises might be the most common way to get to the Bahamas. Most cruise lines stop in the Bahamas along their Caribbean routes , and some brands even have private islands in the archipelago, including Disney Cruise Line ( Castaway Cay ); Carnival Cruise Line ( Half Moon Cay ); Norwegian Cruise Line ( Great Stirrup Cay ); Princess Cruises (Princess Cays); MSC Cruises ( Ocean Cay — MSC Marine Reserve ); and Royal Caribbean International ( Perfect Day at CocoCay ). Virgin Voyages has a private destination on Bimini called the Beach Club at Bimini , and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand has a Margaritaville at Sea cruise ship that sails from the Port of Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island on a regular basis.

There are more than 700 islands in the Bahamas, and while visiting them all is a lofty goal, it's reasonable to see a few during one trip. “Visit one of the 30 other inhabited islands outside of Nassau," Nguyen says. "If you’ve only ever been to Nassau, you haven’t seen all the Bahamas has for you.”

Here are a few islands to consider for your itinerary.

Grand Bahama: A visit to Grand Bahama means getting to experience the archipelago's best outdoor adventures. Snorkeling and diving guides lead aquatic adventures here, and land lovers can relax on famed beaches like Lucaya Beach and Gold Rock Beach. Grand Bahama is also home to Lucayan National Park, which means there is plenty of wildlife spotting to do, too.

Harbour Island: Those looking for an enchanting and colorful experience need not look further than Harbour Island. This is where visitors will find Insta-famous, pastel-colored homes shaded by palm trees. There are gorgeous beaches here, too, Pink Sand Beach is certainly the most famous.

Exumas: Another Insta-famous destination, Exumas is where you'll find friendly pigs swimming in the sea, and they're eager for you to come and say hello. If you're sticking around on this island, dig your umbrella into the sand at Coco Plum Beach.

New Providence Island : You can't really skip New Providence, as it’s home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas and the most common gateway to the islands. Urban hustle and bustle meets serene island escapism in this city, and in all the right ways. Leave time to explore the museums and beaches, and spend a night on the town to feel the city's energy after dark.

Rental car: If you plan to stay on one island for a while, book a rental car so you can get around with ease. Options are abundant at the airport in Nassau, including known brands like Avis, Hertz, and Budget. See all the options here .

Taxi: Taxi services will get you from point A to point B, and rates are fixed by the government , so it's easy to estimate your fare. Ride-shares like Uber and Lyft do not operate on the island. But, if you want to schedule a ride, try the local Let’s Go Bahama app .

Intra-island flights: There are both scheduled intra-island flights and chartered flights available throughout the Bahamas. Bahamasair offers routes between Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbor in Abacos, and Nassau to Great Exuma. Other airline options for getting around the islands include Flamingo Air and Western Air. See all flight options here .

Ferry: There are several ferry and water taxi services available throughout the Bahamas to transport guests from one island to another. For example, Green Turtle Ferry services the Abaco Islands, with scheduled service between Green Turtle Cay, New Plymouth, and Treasure Cay on Great Abaco, while Bahamas Ferries offers connections between Long Island and Georgetown, Exuma, or Nassau. See all ferry options here .

The Essential Bahamas Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Dive into crystal-clear turquoise waters, sink your toes into pristine white sand, and experience a rich cultural tapestry – all just a stone’s throw from Florida! The Bahamas offer an unforgettable escape for families, beckoning with endless sunshine, delicious seafood, and adventure around every corner.

Craving the perfect Bahamas family vacation? Look no further! This comprehensive guide equips first-time visitors with everything you need to know. Whether you’re dreaming of building sandcastles on Nassau’s shores or seeking hidden gems, this guide unlocks the secrets to an incredible Bahamian adventure.

Visiting The Bahamas

On my first visit to The Bahamas, I fell in love with its postcard-perfect white sand beaches and blue waters — both literally inviting travelers to dip their toes in the sand and sea. Since then, I’ve visited multiple times by air and on cruises with friends, family, and most recently on a skip-generational vacation with my grandson.

Do you want to lay on its famous beaches or splash around doing water sports such as snorkeling, diving or parasailing? Maybe you’re a nature lover and prefer to take to its trails or visit its marine habitat, wildlife reserves, or national parks. Or perhaps you’d prefer to step back in time with a cultural walking tour, pose for pictures with its famous swimming pigs or indulge in a few days of fun and pampering at Atlantis Resort , The Bahamas’ most famous place to stay.

Yes! You can do all of that and more in The Bahamas. With so many Bahamian islands and so little time, I still have more to discover and share with my family.

Here’s your guide to visiting the Bahamas, whether it’s your first visit or you’re a Bahamas regular.

Which Bahamas Islands Should I Visit

Nassau, bahamas.

New Providence Island, home to the capital city Nassau , is the most visited of all the Bahamas islands. It offers endless opportunities for attractions and entertainment for families. More than 70% of the country’s people live in Nassau; it is the liveliest of the Bahamas islands.

Just 179 miles southeast of Florida, Nassau is a popular cruise line port as well.

Explore Nassau on your own, or hire local tour operators for a downtown tour of Nassau, walking tours or day trips.

Paradise Island, Bahamas

Paradise Island is across the harbor from Nassau. It’s the home of the famous Atlantis Paradise Island Resort . We recommend spending at least a few nights of your Bahamas vacation at this luxury resort destination.

At Atlantis, you’ll find the thrilling Aquaventure waterpark. Home of The Current, an exhilarating river that is the opposite of lazy, with waves to ride and rapids to run. Or you can take the laid-back route and spend time on the miles of white sand beaches or chill at one of the many resort pools.

Or you can visit one of the many marine exhibits showcasing habitats such as lagoons, caves, coral formations and more.

Freeport, Bahamas

The second-largest Bahamian city is Freeport , located on Grand Bahama Island. This is the place to find upscale resorts, cultural and historical sites, 18 of the 28 species of native birds, and a delightful mix of local and international cuisine.

Make time to visit the island’s waterfront hub, Port Lucaya Marketplace. You’ll find lovely boutiques selling local Bohemian handmade goods, fine dining, and open-air entertainment in the colorful Count Basie Square.

This island is also home to a national treasure, Lucayan National Park , the second most visited park in The Bahamas. Known for its underwater cave system, it is also home to preserved remains of the Lucayan Indians, and a prime combination of natural environments including pine forests, mangroves creeks, and coral reefs. This national park is the place to discover the world-famous Gold Rock Beach.

Worth noting is that Grand Bahama Island was one of the hardest-hit islands when Hurricane Dorian made landfall in 2019. The bulk of the damage happened on the eastern and northern parts of Grand Bahama and recovery continues today. Freeport was spared the worst of the damage.

Bahamas Out Islands

While Nassau and Freeport are amazing, island hopping is also popular and affordable. These islands offer nature lovers seeking a quieter and more authentic Bahamian experience a peek at the 29 lesser populated islands and hundreds of cays.

The Bahamas Out Islands consist of (to name a few) Bimini, Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island , Thunderball Grotto, Exumas, Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Lighthouse Beach, Eleuthera, The Hermitage, and Cat Island. This travel guide is an excellent overview of these islands, their amenities, and things to do.

Cruise Lines’ Private Islands

Many of the cruise lines own or lease private islands in The Bahamas. These private islands offer a wide range of activities including snorkeling, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, waterslides and water parks, restaurants, and more, all reserved for the exclusive use of that cruise line’s passengers.

Coco Cay (pronounced co-co-key) is where you’ll find Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay private island. After a $250 million upgrade in 2019, the island has the Thrill Waterpark (home to the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak, which Royal Caribbean says is North America’s tallest water slide), an air balloon ride, a huge pool and a gorgeous upscale section. The private island is also used by Celebrity cruise ships.

Located on more than 40 acres, Carnival Cruise Line owns Princess Cays at the southern end of the island of Eleuthera and the nearby Half Moon Cay on Little San Salvador Island in The Bahamas.

Disney’s Private Island

Located near Great Abaco Island, the private island of Castaway Cay is an exclusive port for Disney Cruise ships. It’s always a fun stop for families. This 1,000-acre island was originally named Gorda Cay and is the scene for several popular movies including Splash  and  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

When I sailed the Disney Dream several years ago with my daughter and teen and toddler granddaughters, Castaway Cay was our favorite excursion because there’s so much to do for all ages. While my teen granddaughter chilled on a beach chair, my daughter and I walked to the beach for my toddler granddaughter’s first ocean experience. She was hesitant at first but loved the cool turquoise ocean waters.

What is The Bahamas Weather Like?

Due to its tropical weather, The Bahamas is a year-round destination, with average temperatures between 75°F and 84°F (24°C-29°C) in both winter and summer. Early morning and night temps might warrant a light jacket. Summer is typically humid with hot sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Rain is more common in the summer and fall seasons. During the summer, consider indoor activities or shaded day trips to avoid the hot mid-afternoon sun.

When is the Best Time to Visit The Bahamas?

High season with higher rates is typically from mid-December to mid-April, when travelers book to escape the winter snows. If that’s your plan, book at least 3 months in advance for the best rates; Christmas and February might need more lead time.

The best deals in The Bahamas are available from mid-April to mid-December when the trade winds offer cool breezes.

When is The Bahamas Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season officially starts in June and lasts through November. But hurricanes rarely land in The Bahamas.

If you are traveling during hurricane season, travel insurance is highly recommended, although many Bahamian hotels also offer a Hurricane Cancellation Policy. (Please confirm with your desired hotel prior to booking.)

Is It Safe to Take My Family to The Bahamas?

As I said, I have visited The Bahamas multiple times with and without my family. I’ve never felt unsafe, and in fact, the locals have been nothing but kind and friendly.

However, as with any visit to foreign countries, travelers should always remain cautious and aware of their surroundings. Straying too far from tourist areas alone is rarely safe, especially late at night, no matter where you are.

Best Bahamas Resorts for Families

As a top tourist beach vacation destination, Freeport, Nassau, and Paradise Island offer every hotel chain imaginable.

Look for hotels that provide amenities for families such as free breakfast, suites, pools with a lifeguard, onsite restaurants, onsite activities for children (kids’ programs or crafts), or at the least, easy access to the surrounding area.

Atlantis Resort Paradise Island

Located on Paradise Island is the oceanside Atlantis Resort.  If your family is into adventures, get ready to explore all the outdoor and indoor fun within Atlantis’ acres and acres…and acres of property.

We have a whole post on all the family-friendly fun things to do at Atlantis Paradise Island and tips for getting the most out of a visit . Here, I’ll just highlight some of my family favorites: Aquaventure water park, pools, beaches, extensive marine habitats, golf course and Atlantis Casino .

Staying at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort is a luxury resort and it comes at a luxury price. But my family has always thought it was worth every penny.

Comfort Suites Paradise Island

I stayed at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island on my most recent visit with my grandson, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although it’s not “fancy,” it checks all the boxes for family-friendly and affordable. My grandson loved chilling at the pool, and since the resort is tiny compared to Atlantis, I felt safe allowing him to venture to the pool alone for a short time.

Breakfast is included, and the pool-side restaurant serves delicious food.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The best reason to stay at the Comfort Suites? It’s a 20-minute walk to the Atlantis Resort and day passes to the Atlantis facilities are included in a Comfort Suites room price!

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Nassau

My grandson and I also stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, part of a 1,000-acre resort complex. The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar offers impressive luxury, but for my grandson, the pools, the flamingos, and the pool featuring Dean’s Blue Hole were the highlights. He and another teen boy discovered this pool with its 8-foot and 15-foot waterfalls, stone gardens and a secluded grotto with a view of sea turtles and sharks.

This luxury resort is located on Nassau’s stunning Cable Beach. From the rooms to the dining, the service was impeccable at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar.  Just wow!

Freeport Family Friendly Hotels

I’m not as familiar with Freeport, but several of my friends recommended family-friendly Pelican Bay Hotel and Grand Lucayan , Bahamas.

Bahamas All-Inclusive Resorts

In Nassau, just across the bridge from Paradise Island and Atlantis, is the all-inclusive Melia Nassau Beach overlooking Cable Beach. This property, currently under renovation, offers a prime beachfront location just a few minutes from the city center, shops, restaurants, nightspots, museums and Lynden Pindling International Airport.

An all-inclusive option in Freeport is the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach , located on the southern shore of Grand Bahama Island. It includes a kids’ club among other all-inclusive amenities.

For an intimate, totally all-inclusive island getaway with a laid-back vibe, there’s  Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island. One of our favorite all-inclusive resorts, Small Hope Bay features 17 oceanfront cabins and down-home hospitality. Think of it as your personal resort with a fresh hot breakfast, and homemade lunch and dinner buffets.

Getting to The Bahamas

Where is the bahamas.

Spread across more than 500 miles and 700 islands, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, as the islands are officially named, is often referred to as a Caribbean Island. But the islands actually are located in the North Atlantic Ocean, just over 110 miles from southeast Florida.

With more than 40 non-stop flights from South Florida and less than a three-hour ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale, getting to The Bahamas for a family beach vacation is super easy and very quick.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to The Bahamas?

U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to The Bahamas. You will also be asked your anticipated date of departure from The Bahamas.

Those cruising to The Bahamas may use a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.

Click here for more details on traveling to The Bahamas from the United States.

Bahamas Airports

Most travelers arrive in The Bahamas through Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. A newer terminal services only U.S. flights. There is another terminal for domestic flights to the Out Islands and international flights from Canada, England, and other parts of the Caribbean.

Grand Bahama International Airport offers direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Nassau.

Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (formerly Marsh Harbour) in the Abaco Islands has daily flights from Nassau, perfect for island hopping. Several more Bahamas islands also offer island-hopping flights.

Cruising The Bahamas

The Bahamas are popular ports for cruise ship passengers. Cruise ship passengers comprise the largest percentage of day visitors to the islands each year.

In addition to stops at their private islands, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian, and Disney Cruise Line arrive weekly at Nassau and Freeport.

Getting Around The Bahamas

The Bahamas were a British colony and remain part of the Commonwealth. That means cars drive on the left side of the road. Even though the country is pedestrian-friendly, and most drivers yield, be extra cautious and look multiple times so as not to step into traffic.

Transportation options include walking, taxis (only use official taxes marked by yellow license plates), renting a car, and smaller islands offer golf carts.

Things to Do in The Bahamas with Kids

Finding all the things to do in The Bahamas with kids is quite the feat as there truly is so much to do and see, depending on your island of choice. Find below my suggestions, but I haven’t even begun to skim the surface of things to do.

I’d suggest checking out our SheBuysTravel Facebook page to ask any questions! Our SheBuysTravel writers are happy to help!

Our family favorites are the Aquaventure Water park, any kids’ dream vacation with pools, beaches, slides, and adventure everywhere.

Also check out Atlantis’ marine exhibits including an open-air marine habitat and indoor marine adventures with aquariums.

Fun Things to Do in Historic Downtown Nassau

Consider booking an activity from Get Your Guide. The company has a large selection of things to do that are a great choice for a shore excursion, or for first-time visitors. At any given time, Nassau’s calendar is brimming with activities from the arts to history to its culinary and cultural scene.

Take a guided tour of downtown Nassau or go on your own.

These are a few of the kid-friendly things to do in historic Nassau:

Pirates of Nassau

Arrrrgh, matey! Are your kids intrigued by all things pirate? Then don’t miss a visit to the  Pirates of Nassau Interactive Museum , located in the heart of Olde Towne Nassau.

Mixing history with entertainment, begin your pirate adventure on a moonlit dock with the sounds of the lapping ocean and pirates singing nearby.

End your pirate adventure with a Blackbeard’s Revenge Pirate Cruise . Pirate cruises are campy fun for the whole family. There’s a kid-friendly daytime cruise and a dinner cruise with surprisingly good food.

Parliament Square

Rich in history and dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, the pink buildings of Parliament Square are a frequent stop for visitors in old Nassau. This unique Colonial-influenced architecture includes the House of Assembly, the Senate Building, and the Supreme Court of The Bahamas.

There is also a statue of Queen Elizabeth in the square.

Queen’s Staircase

Put on your walking shoes and climb the 66 steps of the Queen’s Staircase, named to honor Queen Victoria. Located on top of Elizabeth Avenue, this staircase was hewn out of limestone rock by slaves in 1793-1794.

When the humidity is at its highest, this staircase is a cool reprieve from the heat. The walkway is lined with palm and native trees. Then at the top, enjoy local shopping stalls and souvenirs.

Historic Forts of Nassau

Forts are a natural defense on an island with pirates and potential invasion as a constant threat.

History buffs will enjoy exploring Nassau with several forts including Fort Montagu on the eastern edge of downtown; Fort Fincastle, at the top of the Queen’s Staircase; and Fort Charlotte, farther west as the largest and most impressive fort, overlooking Paradise Island.

Distillery: Yo Ho Ho (And a Bottle of Rum)

Discover the “Spirit of the Bahamas” with a tour in historic downtown Nassau of the John Wattling’s Distillery. When in the Bahamas, of course, you must tour a rum distillery, right?

See how Bahamian Rum is hand-made and bottled and get a free sample of a pina colada.

Straw Market

Go shopping at the world-famous Straw Market.

Smack dab in the middle of Nassau’s high-end boutique shops, discover handmade Bahamian crafts, gifts, and souvenirs from straw hats to conch jewelry and hand-carved wood. The prices are reasonable, but haggling is expected. So bring your negotiating skills!

More Not-to-Miss Downtown Nassau Sights

For those who enjoy history and museums, if you have time, also visit:

  • Heritage Museum of The Bahamas
  • Balcony House
  • National Art Gallery of the Bahamas
  • Pompey Square and  Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation
  • Christ Church Cathedral

Junkanoo Beach Near Downtown Nassau

Junkanoo Beach is located just west of the Prince George Wharf (where cruise ships dock). Enjoy plenty of white sand to dig your toes into, and, of course, that beautiful turquoise-blue water. Stop at any number of local tiki bars and shops.

SheBuysTravel Tip: This is known as the “spring break beach,” so late afternoon into the evening might not be as family-friendly.

National Parks in The Bahamas

Since 2002, the National Park System of the Bahamas has doubled in size to reach 32 parks covering two million acres spread out across all The Bahamas islands.

The most popular and most visited parks are:

  • Abaco National Park
  • Blue Holes National Park
  • Exuma Land and Sea Park
  • Lucayan National Park (on Grand Bahama Island)
  • Leon Levy Plant Preserve (the first national park of Eleuthera)

Famous Bahamas Swimming Pigs

Have you heard of The Bahamas’ delightful swimming pigs? A colony of wild pigs live on Big Major Cay Island and happily “pose for pictures.”

Pink Sands Beaches Bahamas

The 3-mile stretch of pink sand on Harbour Island gets its color from crushed shells.

Bahamian Food

Bahamian cuisine includes seafood such as fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and conch, as well as tropical fruits, rice, peas, pork and pigeon peas (a sweeter version of green peas). Be sure to order fresh seafood, especially the local favorites: conch (any way you like), fried fish, and a Bahama Mama cocktail (a sweet rum drink with coconut flavoring).

The best place for tasting local Bahamian cuisine is Arawak Cay, a beachfront entertainment area just a short walk from Nassau Harbor, popular with locals and tourists alike.

Known to the locals as the “Fish Fry,” it began as beachfront shacks but has blossomed into a lively waterfront, home to many restaurants, bars, and outdoor eateries. Popular for lunch and dinner, it’s the place to sample local seafood, such as conch fritters and conch salad, grilled lobster tails and spicy grilled shrimp.

Sip local cocktails or the local beer, Kalik, or refreshing non-alcoholic coconut water. This is also home to an authentic Bahamian Fish Fry, made to order by vendors. You’ll also enjoy traditional junkanoo music and street performers.

Warm and Friendly Bahamas People

I say this often to my friends: Bahamians are truly warm, welcoming and friendly.

An excellent example of this is when my grandson and I stayed on Paradise Island and explored Marina Village. We dined at Frankie Gone Bananas and the local Bahamian server took a liking to my grandson. She gave him extra special attention, lots of laughs, and a big hug at the end of the night.

We also enjoyed a junkanoo parade that same evening, and the musicians selected my grandson out of the crowd to play an instrument and walk with them.

These are just two of many examples of friendly locals.

What is the Bahamas Currency?

U.S. dollars and Bahamian dollars are equal in value. US dollars are accepted in The Bahamas. If you want to exchange your money, do it before you get to The Bahamas for the best rate.

I’d definitely recommend traveling with cash and a major credit card. Taxis are cash-only, but some hotel bars and snack spots only accept cards or room charges. If you pay with US dollars, don’t be surprised to get your change in Bahamian dollars.

In tourist areas, if someone helps you out – guides you to your location, takes your picture for you, etc. – tips are expected.

What Language is Spoken in The Bahamas?

British English is the official language of The Bahamas and is spoken on virtually every island.

However, Bahamians also have their own tantalizing Creole dialect with accents, words and phrases influenced by their personal culture and heritage.

Bahamas History

The Bahamas, a former British colony, gained its independence in 1973. It’s now a member of the Commonwealth and its official name is the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

The Lucayan people were the original inhabitants of the island. Christopher Columbus famously landed in the Americas. He then infamously, tragically, and strategically annihilated those peaceful inhabitants.

Historically, The Bahamas remained a European-dominated settlement, marked by slave trade and piracy.

Today, the country is a blend of European and African heritage, and due to its perfect climate and picturesque beaches, The Bahamas relies heavily on tourism.

Rates skyrocket during the high season, which starts in mid-December and lasts through April. That’s when the beaches belong to international tourists. It’s Bahamian winter, so you won’t find many locals going near the water. The tropical weather without extreme heat (high 70s to low 80s) makes this season a visitor magnet, with livelier nightlife but thicker crowds.

Bahamas Travel Guide

Things to Do Getting Around

Rates are lowest — up to 60 percent off — in September and October, the height of hurricane season, which runs from June through November. Travel insurance, always a good idea, is a particularly important buy at this time. On average, a hurricane passes near the Bahamas every two years and makes a direct hit every four years. Hurricane season is also the rainy season, which may cut into your beach and outdoor time, though showers are typically short-lived.

The June-November low season in the Out Islands turns into a dead season from late August to early November — not the best time to visit. Choices may be limited, with some hotels and restaurants shutting down or using the time to make renovations. However, summer is less expensive, and local communities are in full festival mode — from sailing regattas to musical and cultural events. Join the fun at Nassau’s Junkanoo Summer Festival (usually on Saturdays in July), Eleuthera’s Pineapple Festival, the All Andros Crab Fest and the lively musical Cat Island Rake and Scrape Festival (the last three in June). But the intense summer heat, in the high 80s, and humidity are not for everyone.

Ways to save:  In addition to low-season savings, travel Monday through Wednesday. The weekends, starting on Thursday, are peak arrival days, so rates are higher and availability more limited. Check the Bahama Out Islands Promotion Board and the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board for specials and deals; both run seasonal and yearly promotions, such as air credits and companion-fly-free offers.

 How to get there

There are 11 international airports in the Bahamas. Nassau’s  Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is the main airport and the busiest. Most international flights to the Out Islands originate in South Florida. Scheduled airlift from the U.S. goes to Nassau, Grand Bahama, Bimini, the Berry Islands, Great Abaco, Great Exuma and North Eleuthera, so they are safe bets if you don’t want to feel too isolated. To reach an Out Island without international air service, fly to Nassau and connect to your destination with a domestic airline.

Taxis are the primary transport from the airport to your hotel. Government-regulated rates range from $18 to $41 in Nassau. Wheelchair-accessible vans from the Nassau airport can be booked through  Majestic Tours (book 48 hours in advance) or Courteous Transfers and Tours  (book weeks ahead).

Ways to save:  Most of the Out Islands with tourist facilities have multiple airports: Andros, Great Abaco, Eleuthera, the Exumas, Cat Island and Long Island, in particular. Find the airport closest to your hotel, which could make the difference between a $30 and a $90 taxi ride. Some hotels have free airport shuttles or designated drivers that offer discounted rates.

Where to stay

First things first. Decide which island you want to visit — more developed Nassau/Paradise Island and Grand Bahama or the more remote Out Islands, where your experience will be vastly different. Only 16 Out Islands have tourist facilities; favorites include the Abacos, the Exumas, Eleuthera, Harbour Island, Bimini, Long Island and Andros.

Nassau and Paradise Island:  With a population of 228,000, Nassau is a compact little town that fancies itself a big city (it’s not). But you won’t have to travel back in time when you visit. While Indigenous culture is ever present, so are contemporary urban elements and technology. The city’s port is actually the world’s most visited by cruise ships. There are also mega-resorts and chain-brand hotels; fast-food joints; a passel of Starbucks (of course); duty-free shops; buzzy bars and nightclubs; record-setting casinos (they’re huge); and restaurants galore. Nassau bustles, as buses and taxis jostle for passengers, local drivers honk their way through traffic, vendors barter in the Straw Market, and Jet Ski operators work the beach. Nassau offers an array of hotels to fit every taste and budget, from all-inclusive properties to intimate boutique properties and sprawling mega-resorts.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

High-profile properties dot Paradise Island and Cable Beach, highlighted by the 3,000-room mega-resort Atlantis, where guests can experience the world’s largest open-air marine habitat, splash around a 141-acre waterpark or play the 18-hole oceanfront golf course.

Today’s all-inclusive resorts have expanded to include premium-class accommodations that offer both a convenient way to save (guests pay one up-front price for accommodations, meals, activities and entertainment). Breezes Bahamas is one — a 391-room, family friendly all-inclusive that commands a sweeping segment of Cable Beach and offers a contemporary styled, affordable option with rooms positioned steps from the beach.

Ways to save:  Experience Atlantis on the cheap by staying at Comfort Suites just across the road. Children under 12 stay free, and rooms come with full access to Atlantis. Other affordable Nassau options include Holiday Inn Express and Suites, A Stone’s Throw Away and the family-run Orange Hill Beach Inn.

Grand Bahama Island:  Grand Bahama’s population of about 95,000 is sparsely dispersed across 96 miles, so you won’t notice that it’s the second-most-populated Bahamian island. Freeport, the capital, is a neatly planned city with an industrial center. Much of Grand Bahama is still rural, with numerous beaches, three nature parks and ocean-centric activities. Grand Bahama’s popularity has waned as Nassau and Paradise Island have boomed. For a luxurious, all-inclusive golf vacation, stay at Freeport’s Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan. But to totally unwind, head to Old Bahama Bay Resort and Yacht Harbour in the isolated fishing village of West End. Or find bonefishing action with comfort and style at Deep Water Cay, a small fishing lodge in the island’s rural East End.

Northern and Central Out Islands:  Apart from Nassau and Grand Bahama, the Out Islands of the northern and central Bahamas may be the most accessible, but they are still a world away. Absolutely no cruise ships go to the Abacos, a 120-mile-long chain and a boater’s paradise. British loyalists settled here during the American Revolution, leaving a legacy of pastel clapboard houses and white picket fences. A dreamy beach sets the tempo at the Treasure Cay resort, with a golf course, spa and one of the country’s largest marinas. But to move at do-nothing speed, consider Sandpiper Inn on Great Abaco or Hope Town Harbour Lodge on Elbow Cay, a time-frozen island of only 400 souls.

On the other hand, if you want to spot celebrities, stay at Valentines Residences, Resort & Marina, Runaway Hill or the boho-chic Ocean View Club on Harbour Island. Called Briland by locals, it’s VIP central (thanks to Sports Illustrated swimsuit models), so hotel rates are pricey. With excellent restaurants and a pretty-in-pink beach, the tiny island is one of the best places to celebrate New Year’s in the Bahamas (no joke: book at least one year in advance). The New Year’s Night street party and Junkanoo festival is a wildly fun celebration fit for the entire family.

Just a 10-minute water taxi ride away, Eleuthera stretches for a quiet 110 miles. The Cove is a stylish resort in the north, and Cape Eleuthera offers villas, cottages and a marina all the way to the south.

Southern Out Islands:  The farther south you go, the more likely you’ll see large flocks of wild pink flamingos and super-low-key communities. That doesn’t mean Cat Island, Long Island, Inagua, Acklins and Crooked Island only offer books to read on the beach. Birders flock to Inagua, the birding capital of the Bahamas, with more than 140 species in Inagua National Park, home to the world’s largest breeding colony of West Indian flamingos. Use Enrica’s Inn as the base camp for exploring. Fly-fishing vacationers are hooked on Acklins and Crooked Island and stay at Grey’s Point Bonefish Inn or Chester’s Highway Inn Bonefish Lodge in Acklins (which has just two flights per week).

For a barefoot getaway on Cat Island, stay at Rollezz Villas Beach Resort, a family-run hotel with access to Indigenous crafts and music. Make an effort to catch Bohog & the Rooters or Ophie & Da Websites at the local fish fry, or the toe-tapping rake-and-scrape band (featuring goombay drum, concertina and a carpenter’s saw the player scrapes) at Da Smoke Pot restaurant.

Castaway wannabes can head to Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort on Long Island, set in an isolated cove near great fishing and boating and the Sandy Cay Iguana sanctuary, where Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was filmed.

Ways to save:  Rent a vacation home from HomeAway, VRBO or Airbnb, especially with a family. Consider these top areas for renting: Cable Beach, West Bay Street and Eastern Road in Nassau; Pigeon Cay on Cat Island; Winding Bay, Rainbow Bay and Gaulding Cay on Eleuthera; and Great Guana Cay in the Abacos.

Activities to arrange before you go

On U.S. and Bahamian holiday weekends, make sure you book golf carts and car rentals in advance. If you plan to visit for New Year’s, book your accommodations a year out.

Ways to save:  Stop by the Ministry of Tourism welcome desk after you pass through Bahamian immigration at the airport and pick up brochures and guide maps with discount coupons. Taxi drivers also often have coupons. Check the bahamas.com and nassauparadiseisland.com websites for special discounts prior to traveling.

What to pack

This is the time to show off that fancy pedicure: Bring open-toe shoes and strappy sandals. But skip the high heels in the Out Islands, even at gourmet restaurants, as easy-breezy resort wear rules here. And you can never have too many swimsuits. On Nassau/Paradise Island, a night out for women calls for a sundress, slacks or a dressy outfit for more formal places; a breathable dress shirt, slacks and an optional lightweight jacket for men. Respect the sun god at all times: Bring as much sunscreen as you can, a visor or hat, and sunglasses. The sun is not only hot, it can also be blindingly bright, and you’re exposed to its rays pretty much everywhere. Bring extra supplies of specialty medications.

Crime is not a major concern in the laid-back Out Islands. In fact, you’ll find resorts that don’t even have room keys. While it’s more prevalent in more populated Nassau and Freeport, crime was down 14 percent in 2017 and early 2018. Although robberies and assaults do occur, even in daylight, tourist areas are generally safe. However, travelers should always maintain the same precautions and care they would in any major city.

Don’t go out alone at night; be cautious on secluded beaches; drink responsibly; avoid unlicensed taxi drivers and personal watercraft operators and keep your valuables safe and out of sight.

Be careful if you rent a scooter, especially navigating left-hand driving. And avoid unlicensed scooter operators and rental services.

Medical facilities outside Nassau are limited. Each Out Island has a public clinic, and there is a mini-hospital in Marsh Harbour, Abaco. If there is a major medical emergency, travelers can be transported for emergency, critical and specialized care by air ambulance (another reason to purchase third-party travel insurance that includes emergency medical transportation).

Good news: No need to change your money. The U.S. dollar is exchanged 1:1 with the Bahamian dollar. Credit cards are widely used in Nassau, Grand Bahama and some of the Out Islands (Abacos, the Exumas, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, in particular). As a general rule, keep cash handy in the Out Islands. In the southern Bahamas, it’s all cash; islands like Acklins and Crooked Island, for example, have no banks or ATMs.

Electricity

Electrical outlets in the Bahamas are compatible with all American devices (60 cycles/120 volts).

The Bahamas follows American standards for tipping, except that restaurants and bars automatically add a 15 percent gratuity to all bills.

How to Take a Day Trip to Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas

plan trip to bahamas

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is an entire tropical world unto itself. This Bahamian resort boasts casinos, underwater shark walks, and frolicking dolphins. As one of the most famous hotels in the Bahamas , the Atlantis also boasts multiple hotel towers and specific resort sections to accommodate a wide variety of guests' every wish. But, you don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit this mega-resort. In fact, millions of visitors to Nassau take a quick taxi or water-shuttle ride to experience the resort's casinos and restaurants. From information on the top attractions to details about how to get there (and which day pass to reserve), read on for your ultimate guide to day-tripping to Atlantis Paradise Island.

Attractions and Things to Do at Atlantis Paradise Island

There are 85 gaming tables, 21 restaurants, and 19 bars and lounges at Atlantis Paradise Island. However, while throwing down some cash on the craps tables or roulette wheel may satisfy some visitors, others—especially families—are drawn to the Atlantis' aquatic allure; specifically the resort's spectacular "lost world" themed water park, dolphin encounter program, beaches, and the underground mysteries of The Dig, a walk-through exploration of the Lost City of Atlantis. Day tickets for all of these activities can be purchased at Discover Atlantis Sales Centers located throughout the property.

Given the hordes of visitors to the Atlantis daily, it's not surprising that the resort limits access to some of these attractions—notably the Aquaventure pool and water park area—to preserve a premier experience for hotel guests. However, that does not mean that day-trippers can't visit the Atlantis attractions, including Aquaventure; you'll have to pay a bit for the privilege (and expect a significant markup on these prices if you buy through a cruise line).

  • Dolphin Cay at Atlantis: Day visitors can swim and play with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the state-of-the-art, 14-acre habitat.
  • Discover Atlantis Tour: This tour is best known to day-trippers, in part because it is sold as an excursion on cruise ships. Expert "Navigators" guide visitors through the ancient city streets of Atlantis during a visit to "The Dig," a faux-but-believable archaeological exploration of an 11,000-year-old lost continent. The attraction is full of interesting artifacts, along with great water effects and glimpses of exotic sea life, including piranha, moon jellyfish, venomous lionfish, and a resident manta ray. A Discover Atlantis Tour wristband allows visitors to explore The Dig and its exhibits as well as the Ruins, Predator, and Water’s Edge Lagoons—but not the waterpark.
  • Atlantis Beach Day: The Atlantis Beach Day program provides all-day access to the Atlantis resort's exclusive white sandy beaches, with lounge chairs and towels provided. It also includes access to marine habitats and lunch at an outside venue.
  • Atlantis Aquaventure Package : Day-trippers can purchase an Atlantis Aquaventure package that provides all-day access to pools, beaches, and Aquaventure, a 141-acre waterscape containing over 20 million gallons of water with water slides, and a mile-long river ride with high-intensity rapids and wave surges. The passes are only available to guests staying at partners of the Atlantis Resort. They can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures Desk at the clock tower in front of The Coral.

How to Get There

Paradise Island (formerly Hog Island) is a 685-acre island off the northern coast of Nassau, the capital of the island of New Providence. There is no public transport to take you to Paradise Island—the local bus system, the "jitney," will only take you as far as the ferry terminal, so your best bet is either to take a ferry or a taxi.

To access Paradise Island by water, hop aboard a 15-minute ferry ride from Nassau to Paradise Island. The ferry departs from Nassau Cruise Port from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $3 for a one-way ticket. On your boat ride to Paradise Island, a guide will also give you a brief history lesson of the island and its many attractions. Once you've arrived on Paradise Island, it's a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock to Marina Village in Atlantis.

If you decide to rent a car, note that there is limited free parking available on Paradise Island (and limited spots are found near the public beach). The best alternative is to valet your vehicle at the cost of $16.75 per day. Whether you're driving or opting for a taxi, be prepared to pay the northbound one-way $1 bridge toll. In taxis, this will be on top of your metered fare—and the average cost for a one-way trip from Lynden Pindling International Airport to Paradise Island is about $35. Another alternative is to be dropped off along the coast of New Providence to walk across the bridge (an activity that is toll-free). Once you've arrived on the island, there's no need to rent a car, as visitors can easily walk the grounds and explore everything the hotel has to offer on foot.

Day passes are mandatory for all non-hotel guests at the Atlantis to experience Dolphin Cay, the waterpark, the marine habitat, and the beaches. The passes can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures desk, situated at the clock tower at The Coral. These passes have been known to sell out, so it's imperative to book online in advance. World Travel Holdings also sells day passes to Aquaventure, Atlantis Dolphin Cay, and the iconic British Colonial Hilton. These passes are marketed primarily to cruise visitors but can be an excellent add-on for anyone visiting Nassau.

  • The Aquaventure pass includes admission to Aquaventure and The Dig, lounge chairs, and towels.
  • Dolphin Cay experiences include a shallow-water interaction with dolphins.
  • The British Colonial Hilton pass includes all-day access to the resort's pristine private beach and pool, snorkeling and kayaking, lounge chairs and towels, and a food and beverage credit.

Tips for Visitors

  • There's more to Paradise Island than just the Atlantis, so be sure to explore the rest of the island. We suggest hiking to the Nassau lighthouse for gorgeous seaside views along the coast. Of all the waterpark attractions, the underwater shark walk is not to be missed—imagine a turquoise tunnel full of predators. (It's as scary and thrilling as it sounds).
  • There is no visitor information center in Paradise Island, so make sure to consult downtown the tourist information available for visitors in downtown Nassau.
  • If you're planning on staying for dinnertime, make a reservation in advance, as restaurants can become busy, especially in the colder months. Additionally, the resort will limit attractions during the peak busy season to preserve hotel guests' experience—a hindrance that won't be an issue for you if you're visiting during the off-season. If you're visiting in the off-season (summer and fall), expect fewer crowds—for the waterslides and the bars and restaurants, alike.
  • If you're taking the ferry to Paradise Island, remember to bring cash. Although exact change isn't necessary, it's helpful as you will be expected to tip your tour guides, who provide colorful commentary and historical insight into the past and present-day iterations of Nassau and Paradise Island.

Planning a Trip to the Bahamas? Find the Perfect Bahamas Vacation

Planning a trip to the Bahamas sometime soon? What to know when planning a trip to the Bahamas

Through the years of traveling to Bahamas just like you, we have realized what planning a trip to the Bahamas requires starting with the time you visit, what you pack, where to stay, what to visit, and more. We are even a little bias about the best way to get to the Bahamas! Read on to follow us on planning a trip to the Bahamas.

Best time to visit Bahamas

It is necessary to note that there is no bad time to visit the Bahamas. It is a tropical destination which sees what most of the world would consider early summertime weather year-round. Sunny, rarely rainy, with a consistent breeze and low humidity every day. That is exactly how you want your island vacation.

With that being said, there are times when we believe the Bahamas are better to visit. For example, we tend to suggest avoiding the Spring Break rush. Usually, this is a six week period spanning from the beginning of March through mid-April. Take this advice if you are not big on party atmospheres or if traveling with your family. Though there are so many islands to avoid the school break rush, it is probably you will run into the crowd at least at some point during your holiday.

For the best weather, we suggest visiting between the beginning of November and the end of February. The weather stays consistent around a balmy mid-70’s degrees (Farenheit), but this is known as the tourist high season on the islands.

During peak season, prices are usually higher and attractions busier. If your budget and sanity can handle that, then this is probably the best time to visit Bahamas. However, our suggestion is to visit in the traveling off-season because, like mentioned, there is never consistently poor weather in the Bahamas. Even if it rains, it is usually a short afternoon rain and that is it.

Generally, right after Spring Break (end of April) is the best weather of the off-season with fewer long queues and crowded beaches. That is our favorite time for planning a trip to the Bahamas.

Prepare your packing list for a Bahamas vacation. Visit the best beaches in Bahamas on any Bahamas day trip. Take a Exuma day trips to Pig Beach on Pig Island to see the Exuma pigs.

What to pack when vacationing in Bahamas

Packing for the Bahamas is very individualized. If you are a light packer, you may be able to get away with using a 40-liter backpack for all the necessities. After all, you will probably be wearing your swimwear most of the time while you are at some of the best beaches in Bahamas.

Among the things that are most important to bring on your vacation to the Bahamas are things that you can’t easily find or that are extra expensive because of import fees. This includes sunscreen and aloe gel (locals don’t use these things and therefore the prices are hiked up for tourists). Don’t be left out in the sun searching for sunscreen.

Most things, if forgotten, you can find in the Bahamas. But why would you want to spend your precious vacation time tracking these items down when it is entirely possible to bring them with you? Below is a list of other things you may not have thought of:

  • Outlet adaptor
  • Rechargeable power bank
  • 4-wheel suitcase
  • Beach blanket
  • Mask and snorkel
  • Waterproof passport pouch
  • Copy of passport
  • Mosquito spray
  • Sea sickness medication
  • Refillable water bottle (let’s save the planet!)
  • Luggage lock

How long should I stay in the Bahamas

We could take you island hopping for months in the Bahamas. That is why your itinerary depends heavily on what you want to do, how in-depthly you want to explore, and how much time you have available.

Of course, there are some islands which are more easily accessible and, therefore, more often visited. They are no-less spectacular than many of the lesser visited out islands. However, if you have a desire to explore deeper, you will want to set away at least a week in the Bahamas.

For a weekend itinerary, you would be much better off around Nassau (Providence Island, Paradise Island) or even Bimini. From either of these locations, you could take a day trip to Bahamas Exuma Cays to see the world-renowned swimming pigs up close and personal. Plus, in these locations, it is easier to find other day tour attractions and tourist favorites.

How long you stay in the Bahamas is dependent on your desires for the trip. There is plenty of things to do in Bahamas for any and all kinds of travelers.

Many U.S. carriers make it easy to access their network while vacationing in the Bahamas. To be sure, contact your service provider before traveling to know if you will have data service. If not, no worries, if you have an unlocked cell phone, it is easy to purchase a local SIM card upon arrival in the Bahamas.

Tipping in the Bahamas

The Bahamas has taken up the tip culture similar to North America. A gratuity charge at the end of your bill is common in most tourist places.

Introduction

Welcome to the Caribbean’s tropical paradise, the beautiful Bahamas! With its crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, the Bahamas is the perfect destination for an unforgettable getaway. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing beach vacation or an adventurous island-hopping experience, the Bahamas has it all.

In this article, we will guide you on how to plan a trip to the Bahamas, ensuring that you make the most of your time in this stunning archipelago. From researching the best time to visit to understanding local customs and etiquette, we’ll cover everything you need to know to create a memorable and seamless trip.

The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands and cays, each with its own unique charm and activities. The main tourist hubs are Nassau, the capital city, and Paradise Island, known for its luxurious resorts and casinos. However, the outlying islands like the Exumas, Andros, and the Abacos offer a more secluded and tranquil experience.

Before you dive into planning your trip, it’s important to note that the Bahamas experiences a tropical climate, with warm weather year-round. The high season lasts from December to April, when the weather is dry and temperatures are pleasantly warm. The hurricane season, on the other hand, spans from June to November, with an increased chance of storms. However, with proper planning, you can still enjoy a fantastic trip to the Bahamas during the shoulder or low season.

Now, let’s embark on a journey to discover the wonders of this Caribbean paradise as we guide you through the steps of planning your dream trip to the Bahamas. So grab your sunscreen, dive into the shimmering azure waters, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

Step 1: Researching the Bahamas

Researching the Bahamas is an essential first step in planning your trip. By gaining a deeper understanding of the destination, you can make informed decisions about the places you want to visit, the activities you want to indulge in, and the overall experience you desire.

Start by exploring the geography of the Bahamas. As mentioned earlier, the country is composed of over 700 islands and cays, each offering unique attractions and landscapes. Some islands are known for their stunning beaches, while others are renowned for their diving and snorkeling spots. Consider what specific experiences you’re looking for and identify the islands that align with your interests.

Next, dive into the rich history and culture of the Bahamas. The islands have a fascinating past, influenced by the indigenous Lucayan people, European colonizers, and African slaves. Learn about the local customs, traditions, and folklore, which will not only enrich your appreciation for the destination but also enable you to navigate the local culture respectfully.

When researching, pay attention to the top tourist destinations and attractions in the Bahamas. Nassau, the capital city, boasts historical sites like the Queen’s Staircase and the vibrant Straw Market. Paradise Island is home to the iconic Atlantis Resort, where you can enjoy water parks, marine exhibits, and a bustling casino. The Exumas offer breathtaking scenery, including the famous swimming pigs and Thunderball Grotto.

Additionally, don’t forget to explore the activities and experiences that the Bahamas has to offer. From snorkeling through colorful coral reefs to swimming with dolphins and exploring underwater caves, the options are endless. If you’re a food lover, discover the local cuisine, which blends African, Caribbean, and European influences.

As you research, keep in mind the budget and duration of your trip. The Bahamas offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious resorts. Understanding the cost of living, transportation, and activities will help you create a realistic budget and ensure that you can make the most of your time in the Bahamas.

Lastly, seek out travel blogs, forums, and guidebooks for firsthand experiences and recommendations from fellow travelers. Their insights and advice can be invaluable in tailoring your itinerary and discovering hidden gems that may not be as well-known.

By thoroughly researching the Bahamas, you will have a solid foundation to build upon and create a trip that perfectly matches your interests, preferences, and budget. So grab your notebook, start your virtual exploration, and get ready to uncover the wonders of the Bahamas.

Step 2: Choosing the Best Time to Visit

When planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the crucial factors to consider is the timing of your visit. The Bahamas enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, but there are distinct seasons and weather patterns that may affect your travel experience.

The high season in the Bahamas runs from December to April, coinciding with the colder months in North America and Europe. During this time, the weather is generally dry, sunny, and pleasant, making it the ideal time to explore the pristine beaches and indulge in water activities. However, keep in mind that the high season also means larger crowds and higher prices, especially around major holidays and events.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and snag some great deals, consider visiting during the shoulder season. The months of May, June, November, and early December offer a balance between decent weather and fewer tourists. You can still enjoy warm temperatures and a relatively dry climate, but with more affordable rates for accommodations and activities.

One important factor to note is the hurricane season, which officially runs from June to November. While the likelihood of a hurricane or tropical storm affecting your trip is relatively low, there is still a risk to consider. If you choose to visit during this time, be sure to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.

Another unique event that takes place in the Bahamas is the arrival of the migratory whales. From January to April, humpback whales make their journey to the warm waters of the Caribbean, offering the opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close. If whale-watching is on your bucket list, plan your visit accordingly.

Ultimately, the best time to visit the Bahamas depends on your preferences and priorities. If you’re seeking a lively atmosphere, vibrant festivals, and long sunny days, the high season might be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, the shoulder season can provide a more relaxed and affordable visit.

Before finalizing your travel dates, it’s also worth checking for any local events or festivals that align with your interests. Whether it’s a Junkanoo parade, a regatta, or a cultural celebration, immersing yourself in the local festivities can enhance your overall experience in the Bahamas.

By choosing the best time to visit, you can ensure that the weather, crowd levels, and activities align with your preferences, creating a truly memorable and enjoyable trip to the Bahamas.

Step 3: Deciding on Duration and Budget

Deciding on the duration and budget for your trip to the Bahamas is a crucial step in the planning process. It will help you determine the overall scope of your itinerary and ensure that you have a realistic understanding of the expenses involved.

When it comes to duration, consider the activities and attractions you wish to experience in the Bahamas. Are you looking to relax on the beach and unwind? Or do you want to explore multiple islands and engage in a variety of water sports? Depending on your interests, you may need anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to make the most of your trip. It’s important to find a balance between experiencing everything you desire and allowing for rest and rejuvenation.

Next, consider your budget. The Bahamas can cater to a range of budgets, from budget-friendly options to luxurious experiences. Start by determining your overall travel budget, including accommodation, transportation, food, activities, and any additional expenses. Research the average costs for accommodations, meals, and activities in the Bahamas to ensure that your budget aligns with your desired experience.

Keep in mind that the cost of living in the Bahamas can be higher compared to some other destinations. Prices for tourist activities, dining, and accommodations may vary depending on the island you choose to visit. Consider the season of your visit as well, as prices tend to be higher during the high season compared to the shoulder or low season.

It’s also important to factor in transportation costs within the Bahamas. If you plan on island hopping and exploring multiple islands, you may need to budget for inter-island flights or ferry tickets. Additionally, consider the cost of ground transportation, such as taxis or car rentals, for getting around the islands.

Once you have a rough estimate of your budget, decide how you want to allocate your expenses. Are you willing to splurge on luxury accommodations and dining experiences, or do you prefer to save money by opting for more affordable options? Consider the activities that are most important to you and allocate your budget accordingly.

Remember to also include some flexibility in your budget for unexpected expenses or spontaneous activities that may arise during your trip.

By deciding on the duration and budget for your trip to the Bahamas, you can ensure that you have enough time to experience everything you desire while staying within your financial means. This step will help guide your choices in terms of accommodations, activities, and overall itinerary planning, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey in this tropical paradise.

Step 4: Booking Flights to the Bahamas

Booking flights to the Bahamas is an important aspect of planning your trip. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind to ensure a convenient and cost-effective journey:

1. Search for the Best Deals: Start by researching and comparing flight prices from different airlines and travel websites. Use flight comparison websites that allow you to input your departure city and desired travel dates to find the most affordable options. Consider flying into Nassau, the main international gateway, or other airports in the Bahamas depending on your final destination.

2. Keep an Eye on Seasonal Fluctuations: Flight prices to the Bahamas can vary depending on the season. The high season, from December to April, tends to have higher airfare rates. If you’re flexible with your travel dates, consider flying during the shoulder or low season to take advantage of potentially lower prices.

3. Be Flexible with Travel Dates: Being flexible with your travel dates can also help you find better flight deals. Midweek flights or those in the early morning or late evening tend to be less expensive compared to weekend or peak travel times. Use the fare calendar feature on flight booking websites to identify the cheapest days to fly.

4. Consider Layovers: Depending on your departure location, you may need to consider flights with layovers. While direct flights are usually more convenient, they may also be more expensive. If you don’t mind a layover, you might be able to find more affordable options by adding a stopover in a major hub city.

5. Sign Up for Fare Alerts: Stay informed about flight deals and price drops by signing up for fare alerts from various travel websites and airlines. This way, you’ll receive notifications when there are special offers or significant price reductions on flights to the Bahamas.

6. Take Advantage of Loyalty Programs: If you are a frequent flyer, consider utilizing your loyalty program to redeem points or take advantage of member-only deals. This can help you save money on flights or even upgrade your travel experience.

7. Book in Advance: Once you have identified the best flight option for your trip to the Bahamas, it’s generally recommended to book your tickets as early as possible. This can help secure better prices and ensure availability, especially during peak travel periods.

8. Check Entry Requirements: Before finalizing your flight booking, make sure to review the entry requirements for the Bahamas. Depending on your nationality, you may need a valid passport, visa, or proof of return/onward travel. It’s important to ensure that all necessary travel documents are in order before you book your flight.

Once you have booked your flight to the Bahamas, make sure to save your itinerary and any confirmation details. Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment in case of unexpected cancellations or disruptions.

By following these tips, you can secure the best flight deals and ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to the breathtaking islands of the Bahamas.

Step 5: Finding Accommodation

When planning your trip to the Bahamas, finding the right accommodation is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Here are some steps to help you find the perfect place to call your temporary home:

1. Determine Your Budget: Before you start searching for accommodations, it’s important to establish your budget. Determine how much you are willing to spend per night and consider the duration of your stay. The Bahamas offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses and vacation rentals to high-end resorts and luxury villas.

2. Choose the Right Location: Consider what you want to experience during your trip and choose an accommodation that suits your needs. If you prefer a bustling atmosphere with easy access to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife, look for accommodations in Nassau or Paradise Island. If you desire a more serene and secluded experience, consider staying on one of the outlying islands like the Exumas or the Abacos.

3. Research and Compare Options: Utilize travel websites, hotel booking platforms, and online reviews to research and compare different accommodation options. Take into account factors such as amenities, reviews, location, and price. Look for accommodations that align with your preferences, whether you’re seeking a beachfront resort, a cozy apartment, or a charming bed and breakfast.

4. Consider Vacation Rentals: Vacation rentals can be a great option for those seeking more space and flexibility. Websites like Airbnb and VRBO offer a wide range of properties, including apartments, villas, and beach houses, which can provide a more authentic and personalized experience. Take note of the property’s amenities, location, and reviews before making a booking.

5. Check for Special Offers: Keep an eye out for special offers, promotions, and package deals. Many accommodations in the Bahamas provide discounted rates or packages that include additional benefits such as complimentary meals, spa treatments, or excursions. Subscribe to newsletters or follow accommodations on social media to stay updated on any exclusive deals.

6. Read Reviews and Ratings: Before making a reservation, read reviews from previous guests to get an idea of the quality and service provided by the accommodation. Look for genuine and recent reviews to ensure that you make an informed decision. Keep in mind that everyone has different preferences, so consider the overall feedback rather than focusing on a single negative review.

7. Contact the Accommodation: If you have any specific questions or requests, reach out to the accommodation directly. They can provide additional information and assist with any special requirements or arrangements you may need. This communication can also give you a sense of their customer service and responsiveness.

8. Book in Advance: Once you have chosen the perfect accommodation, make your reservation as soon as possible. Popular accommodations in the Bahamas, especially during peak seasons, tend to fill up quickly. Booking in advance ensures availability and allows you to secure the best rates.

Remember to keep important details such as reservation confirmation, contact information, and cancellation policies handy throughout your trip. Having a comfortable and suitable place to stay is essential for an enjoyable vacation in the Bahamas, so take your time to find the accommodation that meets your needs and preferences.

Step 6: Planning Activities and Sightseeing

Planning activities and sightseeing in the Bahamas is an exciting part of your trip preparation. With pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and cultural experiences, the Bahamas offers a wide array of activities to suit various interests. Here are some steps to help you plan your itinerary:

1. Identify Your Interests: Start by identifying the activities and experiences that interest you the most. Are you a water enthusiast interested in snorkeling, diving, or fishing? Or do you prefer exploring historical landmarks, local markets, or nature reserves? Understanding your interests will help you focus on the areas and attractions that align with your preferences.

2. Research Top Attractions: Look into the must-visit attractions in the Bahamas. Nassau is a treasure trove of historical sites, including the Queen’s Staircase and Fort Charlotte. The Exumas offer the incredible opportunity to swim with friendly pigs and explore stunning beaches like Pig Beach and Stocking Island. Andros Island is known for its vast protected nature reserves and stunning blue holes.

3. Consider Outdoor Adventures: The Bahamas is renowned for its outdoor adventures. From snorkeling and scuba diving in the colorful coral reefs to kayaking through serene mangrove forests, there are plenty of opportunities to connect with nature. Research and choose activities that align with your skill level and interests, and consider guided tours if you prefer a more structured experience.

4. Discover Cultural Experiences: Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Bahamas by exploring local traditions, food, and festivals. Visit the lively Straw Market in Nassau to shop for handmade crafts and souvenirs, or attend a Junkanoo parade, a colorful street festival filled with music and dance. Look for opportunities to sample traditional Bahamian cuisine, which blends African, Caribbean, and European influences.

5. Island-Hopping Adventures: If time allows, consider including island-hopping in your itinerary to experience the diversity of the Bahamas. Each island offers unique attractions and landscapes. For example, the Abacos are known for their charming colonial towns and world-class sailing, while the Bimini Islands offer excellent opportunities for fishing and exploring shipwrecks.

6. Plan Rest and Relaxation: While it’s important to plan activities, make sure to factor in some time for rest and relaxation. The Bahamas is famous for its stunning beaches, and spending time simply lounging by the turquoise waters can be a tranquil and rejuvenating experience. Allow yourself some downtime to soak up the sun, enjoy beachside cocktails, or read a book in a hammock.

7. Check for Local Events: Before finalizing your activity plans, check if there are any special events or festivals happening during your visit. The Bahamas hosts various cultural events, regattas, and sports competitions throughout the year. Attending these events can provide a unique and immersive experience, allowing you to connect with the local community.

8. Create a Flexible Itinerary: While it’s important to have a plan, allow for some flexibility in your itinerary. Leave room for spontaneous adventures or simply taking in the beautiful surroundings. Embrace the slower pace of island life and be open to serendipitous discoveries along the way.

By following these steps, you can create an itinerary that incorporates your interests, offers memorable experiences, and allows for relaxation in the beautiful surroundings of the Bahamas.

Step 7: Understanding Transportation Options

Understanding transportation options in the Bahamas is vital for navigating the islands and making the most of your trip. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

1. Inter-Island Flights: The Bahamas has several domestic airports that connect the major islands, making inter-island travel convenient. Local airlines offer regular flights, and it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

2. Ferries: Another option for traveling between islands is by ferry. Various ferry services operate in the Bahamas, providing transportation to popular destinations like the Out Islands. Check the ferry schedules in advance and consider purchasing tickets early, as availability may be limited.

3. Private Boats and Charters: If you prefer more flexibility and independence, you can also consider chartering a private boat. This option allows you to explore different islands at your own pace and access remote areas that are not easily accessible by other means of transportation. However, it’s important to have prior boating experience or hire a knowledgeable captain.

4. Rental Cars: Renting a car is a popular choice for exploring the larger islands such as Nassau or Grand Bahama. It provides flexibility and convenience, allowing you to visit attractions at your own pace. Remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road in the Bahamas and be aware of any specific traffic rules or restrictions.

5. Taxis and Shuttles: Taxis are readily available on the larger islands, and they are a convenient option for short trips or when you don’t want to drive. Inquire about fares beforehand or ensure that the taxi driver uses a meter. Additionally, some accommodations offer shuttle services for airport transfers or specific tours.

6. Bicycles and Scooters: If you prefer a more eco-friendly and leisurely mode of transportation, consider renting bicycles or scooters. This option is particularly suitable for smaller islands or areas with less traffic. Cycling or scooting around allows you to explore at a slower pace and immerse yourself in the local scenery.

7. Public Transportation: On some islands, public buses are available, offering an affordable means of getting around. However, the frequency of buses may vary, so it’s important to check the schedules in advance. Public transportation is more common on the larger islands like Nassau and Freeport.

8. Walking: Many areas in the Bahamas, particularly in towns and tourist hubs, are easily navigable on foot. Walking allows you to soak in the surroundings, discover hidden gems, and enjoy the relaxed island atmosphere. Just make sure to wear comfortable footwear, stay hydrated, and observe pedestrian safety.

When planning your itinerary, consider the transportation options available on each island you plan to visit. The choice of transportation will depend on factors like the distance between islands, your preferred level of independence, and your budget. By understanding the various transportation methods, you can create a seamless and efficient travel experience in the beautiful Bahamas.

Step 8: Packing Essentials for a Trip to the Bahamas

When packing for your trip to the Bahamas, it’s essential to consider the climate, activities, and cultural norms of the destination. Here are some key items to include in your packing list:

1. Lightweight and Breathable Clothing: The Bahamas has a tropical climate, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing like cotton or linen. Opt for shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and skirts to stay cool and comfortable. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit or two for enjoying the stunning beaches and water activities.

2. Sun Protection: The sun in the Bahamas can be intense, so pack essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Consider packing a rash guard or a lightweight cover-up for extra sun protection during water activities.

3. Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be present, especially in certain areas. Pack insect repellent to protect yourself from potential bites, particularly during outdoor activities or in the evenings.

4. Water Shoes: Some of the beaches and snorkeling spots in the Bahamas have rocky or coral-filled areas. Pack a pair of water shoes to protect your feet and provide traction while walking on uneven surfaces.

5. Snorkeling gear: If you plan on snorkeling, consider bringing your snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel, and fins. While some accommodations and tour operators provide gear, having your own ensures a better fit and compatibility.

6. Underwater Camera or Waterproof Phone Case: With the vibrant marine life and stunning coral reefs, capturing underwater memories is a must in the Bahamas. Pack an underwater camera or a waterproof phone case to protect your devices while snorkeling or participating in water activities.

7. Lightweight Rain Gear: The Bahamas experiences occasional rain showers, particularly during the rainy season. Pack a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella to keep you dry without adding unnecessary weight to your luggage.

8. Medications and Travel Essentials: Don’t forget to pack any necessary medications in their original containers, along with a small first aid kit. Other travel essentials include a power adapter, a refillable water bottle, a small backpack or beach bag, and a reusable shopping bag for reducing plastic waste.

9. Casual Evening Attire: While the Bahamas has a relaxed atmosphere, some restaurants and upscale venues may have dress codes. Pack a few nicer outfits for evenings out, including lightweight dresses, slacks, or collared shirts.

10. Travel Documents: Keep your passport, flight tickets, accommodation reservations, and any other travel documents securely organized in a waterproof document holder or travel wallet. Consider making digital copies as a backup for easy access.

11. Cash and Cards: While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s advisable to have some cash on hand for small vendors or establishments that may not accept cards. Check the currency exchange rates and ensure you have enough cash for tipping, transportation, and any unexpected expenses.

Remember to pack according to the baggage allowance of your airline and consider any additional weight or size restrictions. By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your time in the beautiful Bahamas, savoring the warm weather and embracing the island lifestyle.

Step 9: Managing Finances and Currency Exchange

Managing your finances and understanding currency exchange options are important considerations when planning a trip to the Bahamas. Here are some key steps to help you effectively manage your money during your stay:

1. Currency: The official currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar (BSD). It’s best to have a small amount of Bahamian currency in cash for immediate needs upon arrival. You can exchange your currency at the airport, banks, or currency exchange offices, but note that rates may vary. US dollars are widely accepted in the Bahamas, so having some US currency as a backup is also convenient.

2. Credit Cards: Most establishments in the Bahamas, including hotels, restaurants, and shops, accept major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Credit cards often offer favorable exchange rates, convenience, and security. Inform your bank or credit card company about your travel plans to ensure uninterrupted card use and to avoid any potential fraud concerns.

3. ATM Access: ATMs are readily available throughout the Bahamas, particularly in major tourist areas and towns. They allow you to withdraw Bahamian dollars or US dollars, depending on the machine. Be mindful of potential fees and currency conversion charges associated with ATM withdrawals, and check with your bank regarding any withdrawal limits or foreign transaction fees.

4. Budgeting: Establish a budget for your trip to the Bahamas and plan your expenses accordingly. Take into account accommodation, meals, transportation, activities, and any additional costs such as souvenirs or tips. Research the average prices of goods and services in the Bahamas to get a sense of how far your budget will go.

5. Tipping: Tipping is customary in the Bahamas. Restaurants generally add a service charge to the bill, but it’s common to leave an additional 10-15% if the service was satisfactory. Similarly, it’s customary to tip taxi drivers, tour guides, and hotel staff for their services. Have small bills or change on hand for tipping purposes.

6. Cost of Living: Keep in mind that the cost of living in the Bahamas can be higher compared to some other destinations. Prices for tourist activities, dining, and accommodations may be higher, particularly in popular tourist areas. To manage your expenses effectively, research and compare prices, seek out local eateries for more affordable dining options, and consider self-catering if your accommodation allows.

7. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect your investments in case of trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or unforeseen events. Ensure that your policy covers medical expenses, lost or stolen belongings, and trip interruptions.

8. Stay Updated on Exchange Rates: Exchange rates fluctuate, so it’s a good idea to stay updated on currency exchange rates before and during your trip. This will help you make informed decisions about when and where to exchange your money for the best rates.

By managing your finances wisely and being mindful of your expenses, you can ensure a smoother and stress-free experience when it comes to handling money during your trip to the Bahamas.

Step 10: Understanding Culture and Etiquette in the Bahamas

Understanding the culture and etiquette of the Bahamas is important to ensure that you have a respectful and memorable experience. Here are some key aspects to consider:

1. Greetings and Politeness: Politeness is highly valued in Bahamian culture. When meeting someone, it is customary to greet them with a warm smile and a handshake. Addressing locals with “Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” or “Good evening” is considered polite, and using “Sir” or “Ma’am” as appropriate is appreciated.

2. Respect for Customs and Traditions: The Bahamas has a rich cultural heritage influenced by African, Caribbean, and European traditions. Respect local customs and traditions, such as the vibrant Junkanoo parades and traditional food preparations. Ask for permission before taking photos of individuals or religious sites, and dress modestly when visiting cultural or religious landmarks.

3. Island Time: Embrace the relaxed pace of life in the Bahamas. Locals often operate on “island time,” which means things may not always run on a strict schedule. Allow for flexibility and be patient if plans or services encounter delays or operate at a slower pace than you may be accustomed to.

4. Clothing: While the Bahamas has a casual and laid-back atmosphere, it’s important to dress appropriately in public areas. Bikinis, swimwear, and revealing clothing are acceptable on the beach and at resort pools, but it’s advisable to cover up when walking through town or visiting non-beach areas. Wearing conservative attire when visiting religious sites or attending formal events is also respectful.

5. Beach and Environmental Etiquette: Respect the natural beauty of the Bahamas by practicing good environmental etiquette. Keep beaches and public areas clean by disposing of garbage in designated bins. Avoid touching or removing marine life from their natural habitats, and refrain from leaving behind any traces of your visit, such as trash or damage to coral reefs.

6. Bargaining and Tipping: Bargaining is not a common practice in the Bahamas, especially in established stores or businesses. However, in local markets or when purchasing goods from individual vendors, you may have some room for negotiation. When it comes to tipping, it is customary to leave a gratuity of around 10-15% for good service in restaurants and to tip taxi drivers, tour guides, and hotel staff for their services.

7. Language: English is the official language of the Bahamas. The locals speak a unique dialect known as Bahamian Creole, but you will have no trouble communicating in English. Take the time to learn a few common Bahamian expressions and phrases to show respect and engage with the local culture.

8. Overall Respect and Friendliness: The people of the Bahamas are known for their warm and friendly nature. Be respectful to everyone you encounter, including locals and fellow travelers. Embrace the spirit of friendliness, engage in conversations, and express gratitude to locals who provide you with help or recommendations.

By familiarizing yourself with the culture and etiquette of the Bahamas, you can show respect to the local customs and traditions, foster positive interactions, and create a harmonious atmosphere during your visit. A little cultural sensitivity goes a long way in making your trip truly meaningful and enjoyable.

Do you need a passport to go to the Bahamas? Everything you need to know before your trip

I f you’re planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you’ll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it’s close to the United States , it’s not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you’ll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas

There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas.

Can you use your driver’s license to go to the Bahamas?

No, a driver’s license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you’ll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Your driver’s license may be used as additional identification, but it cannot replace a passport for international travel to the Bahamas. The Bahamas Immigration authorities are strict about enforcing entry requirements, so it’s best to have proper documentation in order.

Can you go on a cruise without a passport?

If you’re planning to take a “closed-loop” cruise that begins and ends at the same U.S. port, you may be able to cruise to the Bahamas without a passport book. However, you’ll need to have a valid passport card, enhanced driver’s license (EDL), or other accepted Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.

It’s important to check with your cruise line well in advance – some cruise companies may require a passport book regardless of the itinerary. Cruise lines typically recommend having a passport book, even if it’s not strictly required, because it can make re-entry to the U.S. smoother if unforeseen delays or itinerary changes occur.

Is the Bahamas a U.S. territory?

No, the Bahamas is not a U.S. territory. It’s an independent nation made up of over 700 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, located just off the coast of Florida.

While the Bahamas has close ties with the United States, it’s a separate country with its own government, laws, and entry requirements for visitors. This means you’ll need to follow the same travel regulations as any other foreign destination.

Bottom line

The main thing to remember is that you’ll need a valid passport book or passport card to travel to the Bahamas, whether you’re flying or taking a cruise. Your driver’s license just won’t cut it for this international trip, even though the Bahamas is pretty close to the U.S. Now if you’re doing a cruise that leaves from and returns to the same U.S. port, you might be able to get by with just a passport card or other WHTI-approved identification instead of a book. But don’t take chances – check with your cruise line first.

If you really want to go to the Bahamas from L.A, you would have to fly there. JetBlue has a non-stop flight from LAX to NAS that takes 5.5 hours.

Instead of Bahamas, consider breaking up the trip by stopping in Hawaii instead.

The only reason to visit the Bahamas is if you want to be immersed in a sea of hypertensive New Yorkers trying to relax on holiday. What about the Bahamas appeals to your daughter? If she's looking to experience a bit of Britain whilst in the U.S., visit the British Virgin Islands (BVE) -- specifically, the islands of Tortola or Virgin Gorda.

BTW, hotels, there are ridiculously expensive so if you're on a budget, stay in the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands and make a day trip (by ferry) to the BVE.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Reportedly Plan To Attend Coachella Together After Bahamas Trip

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are reportedly planning a joint trip for the upcoming Coachella Music Festival following their intimate vacation in the Bahamas.

According to a report, the couple will rent a house in the location for one of the two weekends of the music festival, during which they plan on seeing singer Lana Del Rey.

Travis Kelce And Taylor Swift Plan To 'Rent A House' For Coachella Weekend

Fresh off their trip to the Bahamas, Swift and Kelce are already preparing for their next couple trip together.

A source shared with Us Weekly that the lovebirds "both want to see Lana Del Rey and [Jack Antonoff's band] Bleachers" as they perform in the desert for the upcoming Coachella Music Festival.

The insider added that the couple will be "renting a house in the area" for one of the two festival weekends. The 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will take place on April 12 to 14 and April 19 to 21.

Kelce, currently in his off-season, will reportedly stay with Swift until late April.

"Taylor is very excited about the opportunities Travis is getting and fully supports him. [But] she wants him to be conscious of his schedule. The only issue is making sure they can see each other," another source told the news outlet.

The Couple Enjoyed A Vacation In The Bahamas

Kelce and Swift were spotted packing on the PDA while vacationing in the Bahamas. The pair were seen strolling in the sun and holding hands during their trip.

The NFL star donned his swimwear on the outing, donning patterned blue trunks, a white T-shirt, and brown leather loafers. For her part, Swift wore white shorts, a cropped tank, and woven slides, which she accessorized with sunglasses and a baseball cap.

"They vacationed in the Bahamas for several days," a source told People Magazine about the couple's trip. "It was a much-needed break for both of them. They very much enjoyed it. They are so happy together."

The pair have since returned to the States and were recently seen dining at Nobu in Malibu.

Before their vacation, Kelce traveled to Singapore to support the singer at her Eras Tour concert.

Travis Kelce Calls Taylor Swift The 'Biggest & Beest Thing Possible'

In an episode of his podcast, "New Heights," Keelce described Swift as the "biggest and best thing possible" while talking about his romantic visit to her in Australia.

The football player made the statement when his brother Jason Kelce asked how the couple were pictured during their getaway time at a Sydney zoo.

Kelce said: "There were full-on helicopters just flying around. They helicoptered us, well, not us. This is all because Taylor is the biggest and the best thing possible."

He also discussed visiting the lion section with the pop star and being in awe of their physical abilities.

The 34-year-old remarked, "Dude, when you hear that roar - Taylor taking a picture, and you see three of them run down from their perch, knowing they are about to get fed, you see how fast and agile that thing is, it's over."

"You could tell one was the like big, bad - I was like d---, that's a bad man right there. It was fun," Travis added.

They Love Supporting Each Other Despite Their Busy Schedules

A source who spoke to ET revealed that the couple has always shown up at each other's events since they began their whirlwind romance because they desire to prioritize their relationship despite their busy schedules.

The insider said, "Travis is very into Taylor and wanted to be there to support her during her shows in Australia. He's grateful that she showed up for him during a very hectic time in her career and made it a point to do the same for her. They're making a joint effort to make things work."

Swift gushed about her love for the NFL star in her December cover story with Time Magazine .

"When you say a relationship is public, that means I'm going to see him do what he loves; we're showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don't care," Taylor told the publication. "We're just proud of each other."

Travis Kelce Says He Is 'Oozing With Life'

In an interview with People , Kelce opened up about how happy he has been the last few months, especially after winning his third Super Bowl championship.

"I'm the happiest I've ever been. I'm a guy that some people say is glass half full, half empty, and my glass is all the way full. It's all the way full," Kelce told the news outlet. "I'm oozing life right now."

He went further to reveal that he's been enjoying all the opportunities that come his way after his latest win.

"It's just so much fun getting into when you win the Super Bowl, all these doors open, and so I've just been going through all these open doors, experiencing life and just appreciating the people that have got me here and also staying high and meeting new faces," Kelce said.
