A liquor and beverage consumption policy was created in order for Carnival to be able to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board.

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation Day

What items am I not allowed to bring?

Prohibited Items:

• Alcohol (hard liquor) and beer
• Wine or champagne beyond the allowable limit of one 750 ml bottle per adult (18 years of age or older). *Port, Vermouth, Sherry and other fortified wines, over 15% alcohol by volume (ABV), cannot be brought on board. 
• Non-alcoholic beverages in containers other than a can or carton; excessive quantities per person (over 12 cans/cartons per person); exessive size per can/carton (over 375 ml each)

Carnival's Liquor and Beverage policy states that the guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages on board that are packed in bottles. What is Carnival's liquor and beverage policy?

Guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages that are packaged in glass or plastic bottles.

On embarkation day, a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, energy drinks, juice, and milk), packaged in cans or cartons, may be brought on board and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 375-ml each or less, per person.

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception - at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (18 years of age and older) may bring one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage. *This does not include Port, Vermouth, Sherry and other fortified wines, over 15% alcohol by volume (ABV), which cannot be brought on board. Outside this exception, all liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided . Guests sailing with us on back-to-back cruises are entitled to bring the same quantity as stated in this policy, per cruise. The additional quantities will be stored for safekeeping at the start of the first cruise and will be given to the guest as each following cruise begins.

Corkage Fee:

Should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the main dining room, specialty restaurant or bar, a $15.00 AUD corkage fee, per 750-ml bottle, will be charged. A corkage fee is a charge that is assessed, at time of service, for every bottle that is served and not bought on the premises.

Large cooler restrictions : Carnival Cruise Line does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its ships. However small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 30x30x30cm for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process. Therefore, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage.

Ports-of-Call : Alcoholic beverages of any kind purchased in any Port-of-Call will be retained at the gangway, stored on board and held by Carnival until the end of the voyage.

Drinking Alcohol On Board : The minimum age for the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the bars, lounges and gift shops is 18 years of age. In the event that Bar/Restaurant/Gift Shop staff are in question that a guest is less than 18 years old, they shall request picture identification, prior to serving the drink or selling the bottle of liquor. Carnival reserves the right to refuse the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone.

Drinking Age In International Waters (All Cruise Line Drinking Ages)

Depending on your age, or those you are traveling with, you might be looking to book a cruise on which you can legally drink alcohol.

While all US cruise ships adhere to the rule that you must be over 21 years old to drink alcohol on a cruise, there are some differences in the drinking age on cruise ships when you sail in international waters.

Below we have covered all the drinking ages for all the main cruise lines in international waters, including exceptions.

How Old Do You Have to be to Drink on a Cruise In International Waters?

When purchasing and drinking alcohol on a cruise ship, you must adhere to the age laws.  

International Waters are defined as 3 miles out of US territorial waters .    This means that if the cruise ship is within 3 miles of territorial waters, all passengers must adhere to the drinking age of 21.

Once outside US waters and into international waters, some cruise lines allow a lower drinking age of 18 years.  

This is sometimes with exceptions, which we have highlighted.  We’ve also provided links to cruise line alcohol policies so you can double-check any finer terms beneath the tables.

What Defines a US Cruise?

While it can vary slightly depending on the cruise line, a cruise is usually classed as a US cruise if it departs from a US port or if it visits at least one US port as part of its itinerary.

Drinking Age on International Cruises

For those on international cruises outside of the US, the drinking ages are typically lower than 21.

Although they can still vary depending on certain circumstances, for example, parental consent is required on some cruise lines.

Can You Drink Under 21 On a Cruise

If you leave or visit a US port as the port of your itinerary and are with US territorial waters, you will not be allowed to drink under the age of 21.

If you sail outside US territorial waters into international waters, some cruise lines (not many) lower the drinking age to 18, often subject to extra conditions such as parental consent.  As well as there being possible exceptions to the rule.

Carnival Cruise Drinking Age

Carnival Cruises has a flat age of 21 for purchasing alcohol on one of their cruise ships.  

Even if you are a young looking 21 year old or older, still take your I.D as its likely you will be asked for it, as they even state in the terms.

Celebrity Cruises Drinking Age

Celebrity Cruise’s drinking age is 21 for US waters and 18 for the rest of the world.

“The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Celebrity Cruises® ships sailing from North America is 21. Costa Cruises Drinking Age

The Italian cruise line Costa cruise line has a drinking age of 21 for any cruise from or to US ports.  For the rest of the world, the  drinking age is 18.

“The Guest agrees that no alcohol shall be purchased or consumed by any Guest under the age of twenty-one (21) on cruises embarking or disembarking Guests at U.S. ports, or under the age of eighteen (18) for all other cruises.” Full Costa Cruises Terms here .

Cunard Drinking Age

British cruise line Cunard has a drinking age of 21 in US waters and 18 years of age for the rest of the world.

Even if you are of age, make sure you take some ID as they are likely to check.

“Guests who are under 18 years of age are not permitted to purchase or consume alcohol on board.  However, whilst in U.S. waters, Cunard enforces and abides by the U.S. legal drinking age of 21 years. Proof of age may be required.” Cunard age limit for drinking alcohol here .

Disney Cruise Line Drinking Age

Disney cruise lines have a drinking age of 21 when departing or visiting any US port.

The age can be as low as 18 if you have parental consent on ships that depart from any European country with a lower drinking age.

Make sure you have a valid ID on you as it’s likely you will be asked.

MSC Cruises Drinking Age

MSC Cruises is an Italian cruise line.  If the cruise ship departs or visits, a US port on the itinerary, the drinking age will be 21.

Norwegian Cruise Line Drinking Age

Norwegian cruise line allows passengers aged 18 – 20 to drink alcohol onboard once they are out of international waters.

Parental consent will be required for all cruises where guests are under 21.

“The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Norwegian Cruise Line ships is 21. Guests who are 18 – 20 years of age can purchase and consume beer or wine when the ship is in international waters (3 miles out of US territorial waters). The age modification does not apply for Alaska and Hawaii sailings. P&O Cruises

P&O cruises is a British cruise line.  They adhere to the minimum age of 21 for any US cruise.

However, in the rest of the world, the drinking is age 18, and even as low as 16 if ordering alcohol with a meal, as long as with a parent or guardian.

Do take some I.D. as you will likely be asked, even if you are of age.

Princess Cruises Drinking Age

The drinking age on Princess cruises is 21 on any US cruise.  For the rest of the world, the age is 18, except for Japan where it’s 20.

Royal Caribbean Drinking Age

The Royal Caribbean age is 21 for any US-related cruises and private islands and 18 for the rest of the world.

The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating from North America or the Caribbean is twenty-one (21). The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is twenty-one (21). The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is eighteen (18).  The minimum age to consume alcohol at all private destinations remains twenty-one (21) without regard to where the sailing originated. This is CruiseMapper's review of the company's alcohol policy and beverage policy rules. How much are drinks on Carnival cruise (drink prices)

Carnival alcohol and mixed drink prices on cruises are considered "moderate" for moderate drinking only. And the opinion of common folks is these prices do not contain much of the onboard fun. Still, they are pretty decent compared to other major cruise lines. Additional info and tips:

• the service charge for opening a personal bottle of wine not bought on the premises (Carnival corkage fee) is $10 per bottle (if the wine is consumed in one of the main dining restaurants) and $14 if consumed in a specialty restaurant. All beverage prices include the 15% gratuity. However, Carnival's drink gratuity was increased to 18% (since December 2018).
• check regularly the "Drinks of the Day" page (the ship's "Fun Times" newspaper) for daily discounted beverages. The "Early Bird Specials" (alcoholic beverages ordered before noon) are at pretty special prices. A "Bloody Mary" is only $3,95 - but only from 9 till 11am.
• The list of Carnival free alcohol offers includes the Captain's cocktail party, the farewell party, art auctions, Past Guest receptions and free alcohol testing at the onboard duty-free shops (usually on the first day).

The new "Thirsty Red Frog" ale is offered in 3 sizes: pint (20oz), pitcher (60oz) and beer tubes (101oz) - see below for the prices. It's a private-label freshly onboard-brewed draft beer (brewed by Budweiser) available only on CCL ships.

Originally brewed exclusively for the RedFrog Pub, the "frog-beer" is now served in select ship bars/lounges and it has a taste similar to Killian's Red. As to The Red Frog Pub, the 100-seat indoor/outdoor bar is on the newest liners and also on all Fun Ship 2.0 upgraded ships . Along with Thirsty Red Frog, the pub serves top-rated Caribbean rums and a "best beers Caribbean" collection. Next, are listed Carnival's Draft Beers prices:

• $5,50 (16oz) and $28,95 (tube of 101oz) for the beers "Modelo Especial", "Dos Equis", "Presidente", "FROG'S PINT" (20oz)
• Thirsty Red Frog beer price is: $5,50 (20oz), $16,95 (60oz), $27,95 (101oz).

Draft beers on Carnival cruise ships

In May 2017 was introduced a tropical-flavored draft beer via a partnership with the Miami-based Concrete Beach Brewery. The special beer is served exclusively at the "RedFrog Pub & Brewery" on Carnival Vista - the first brewery found on a North America-based cruise liner. The new "Miami Guava Wheat Beer" was hand-crafted by Colin Presby (brewmaster on the shipboard brewery) and made with the best ingredients.

• Miami Guava beer has a light body and its primary ingredient is pink guava, also used in Miami's popular guava pastries. The new beer is available on a limited basis, and joins the 3 other original draft beers brewed on the Carnival Vista ship - ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin' IPA (floral flavor, with passion fruit and citrus overtones), ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat (unfiltered lager with banana aroma and spices) and FriskyFrog Java Stout (with hints of coffee).
• Concrete Beach Brewery is an "Alchemy & Science" beer brand, operating as an independent subsidiary of "The Boston Beer Company". Other "Alchemy & Science" breweries in the USA include Angel City Brewery (Los Angeles) and Coney Island Brewing Co (Brooklyn, NYC New York). Their most popular draft beers are named "Tropic of Passion" (Miami), Angel City IPA (LA), and Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner (NYC).
• US-homeported Carnival ships serve the Concrete Beach Brewery's Rica Wheat IPA, Angel City Brewery's Pilsner, Coney Island's Hard Root Beer, and 1609 Amber. On a regional basis, Carnival ships leaving from Miami offer Concrete Beach Brewery's Stiltsville Pilsner, ships from Long Beach (Los Angeles) offer Angel City Brewery IPA, and ships departing from NYC offer Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner.
• Carnival Cruise Line also offers draft beers brewed either locally (in homeports) or within the homeport state. Such beers are offered on cruise ships leaving from NOLA New Orleans, Galveston TX, Baltimore MD, and Tampa FL, as well as on ships to Alaska and Hawaii.

In October 2019, Carnival introduced fleetwide the seasonal brew "ParchedPig Pumpkin Ale" (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, gingerbread, herbs, caramel, brown sugar). The beer is offered in both bottles (22-oz) and on draft, and in 3 variations - West Coast IPA, Toasted Amber, and Beach Lager.

Carnival Beer Package

Carnival beer bucket prices are discounted - for 4 bottled beers in a bucket (plastic or aluminum bottles), purchased on the ship, domestic brands from the menu. You save $2 on the bucket ($0,50 a beer) plus you save the 18% gratuity on the $2 ($0,30 additional savings).

By purchasing the "Island Hopper" beer bucket (at the Red Frog bar) you'll save $3 on every 4 beers. The cost of a beer bucket depends on the brand, you can also mix and match beers, sometimes there are specials

if you buy 4 beers you get the 5th one for free in the bucket. It's exactly what the beer bucket says: "Fewer trips to the bar - more lounge chair time"! Now about Bon Voyage / Fun Shop beer-packages (4-pack prices):

• The Carnival's "Martini Tasting" deal will cost you $17 per person.
• The list of all favorite martinis with Finlandia Vodka in your booze fun package/tour includes: "Berry Melody", "Mangotini", "Florida Squeeze", "Spicy Chipote", "Pomegranate Breeze", "Jack Julep", "Melon Crush" and the "Classic Cosmo" (for their exact ingredients - see the recipes link below).
• Martini Tasting is available fleet-wide, but depending on ship/itinerary they offer it from twice a cruise to every night. To be sure when and where - check the "FunTimes" (onboard newspaper), it should be listed there.

Carnival Fun Shops liquor prices (alcohol, beer, drink packages)

Bon Voyage is open for business from Monday through Friday (9 AM to 6 PM EST) and closed on Memorial-Independence-Labor days, Thanksgiving, Christmas-New Years days.

• Bon Voyage/Fun Shop orders are accepted up to 1-week prior to departure.
• If an item is not available at the sailing time, an item of equal value will be substituted.
• Fun Shop purchases will not show up on your booking info (meant to be a surprise after all). Carnival sends confirmation emails. If you didn't receive the email (sometimes it just happens) - send a request for confirmation.
• All prices below are per bottle and don't include tax.
• Alcohol brands are occasionally changed.
• Tips: Fresh lemon and lime you can order via 24-hour room service (complimentary). If you buy souvenir glass, you can mix your "Bon Voyage" drinks in it and carry them wherever you want on the ship.

Fun Shop drink packages (beer, soda, bottled water, juices/mixers, energy drinks)

Tip: Fun Shops water cost is pretty high. Instead, you can buy a gallon (3,8 L) of distilled water from your cabin steward for US$3. Or use for free tap water on the boat - it is perfectly fine for drinking.

Carnival Bon Voyage alcohol policy rules

• Any alcohol purchased through Fun Shops is delivered to staterooms (not to dining room tables).
• If you buy wine through Bon Voyage, you don't pay a corkage fee.
• There's a limit of max 2 bottles per cabin when ordering liquor (until recently it was 4 btls).
• In the above list if you don't see something be sure to call/ask.
• Due to Alabama and Texas alcohol laws, Carnival ships departing from Mobile AL and Galveston TX can't deliver alcoholic drinks to staterooms until the ship is in international waters (delivery may even be delayed until the following day).

Bon Voyage/Fun Shops prices updates

In January 2018, Carnival added a 15% delivery fee to any items pre-purchased from Fun Shops (prior departure). However, it doesn't apply to all purchases. The list of not charged items include packages ( Bottomless Bubbles , Cheers , Cruise Cash , Internet, water packages). The new delivery fee doesn't apply also to any liquor packages bought onboard with intent to carry home at the end of the voyage. The charge is added when, after having made Fun Shops selections, passengers make an actual purchase.

Carnival regularly makes "price corrections" on its Bon Voyage/Fun Shop liquor. While 12-year scotch from $75 now is $80, it's still way cheaper than $7-8 a drink at ship's bars.

• In March 2013, CCL renamed its retail section from "Bon Voyage" to "The Fun Shops". Along with the name, they changed prices as well.
• On most items prices were increased from 20 to 40%. Some of the "most expensive" examples are 9" BV Cakes ($9,95 to $14), "Fruit Supreme" basket ($39 to $50), and most of the liquor (up by 10-15% on average).
• In June 2013, liquor prices were souring up again - the most "extravagant" cases showed up to a 25% increase.
• Carnival Bon Voyage liquor prices are in US dollars, both per bottle and per glass (1,5 fl oz, 45 ml). The list of services (besides ordering liquor and fine wines) also includes special offers and various Carnival branded merchandise.
• Fun Shop alcohol prices are about 2-3 times higher compared to your local liquor store. However, the savings you'll make onboard with this option make them well worth the purchase. While these prices may somehow seem a little bit over the edge, this service is a very convenient option to start your vacation.
• Bon Voyage alcohol ordering saves good money. Most liquor brands are in 33,8 fl oz (1L) bottles, which makes these "alcohol packages" great deals.
• And remember, the limit is 2 bottles per cabin.

Carnival Cruise Lines alcohol policy

The company's alcohol policy is mostly about bringing wine on Carnival ships . The allowance is one 750ml bottle of wine/Champagne per 21+yo passenger, only once (on embarkation day) and only in carry-on luggage.

Bringing alcohol on Carnival ships

Follows the list of "not allowed" alcohol-related rules.

• selling/serving alcohol to passengers under 21 yo. Carnival reserves the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone.
• buying alcohol for under-aged passengers
• The legal drinking age on Carnival ships is 21 years of age - both for purchasing and consumption of alcoholic beverages at all bars-lounges-shops.
• purchasing alcohol in seaports and onboard (duty-free) shops - your liquor is retained and stored until the end of the voyage.
• Carnival's corkage fee (additional wine/Champagne serving charge when the wine wasn't bought on the premises) is $10 per bottle (if consumed in Main Dining Room) and $14 per bottle (specialty restaurants / at a fee).
• "All you can drink" cruise deals are offered also on ship-charters and as a bonus on party-themed cruises .
• Free alcohol on Carnival ships is offered at Captain's Welcome and Farewell cocktail parties, Past Guests receptions, art auctions, alcohol testings (at duty-free shops, usually on the first day), Steakhouse reservations (free wine on first-night promotions).

Carnival beverage policy

Carnival's alcohol and beverage policy rules were implemented (as officially stated) "to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board" - meaning to avoid shenanigans at sea.

Bringing water/soda on Carnival cruises

According to the old beverage policy:

• the allowance was max 12 bottles/cans (max 20oz each, sealed) of non-alcoholic beverages (soft drinks, bottled water, juice, milk, iced tea, etc.
• It allowed bringing soda on Carnival ships, but - only in carry-on luggage, in original and sealed containers (meaning not opened) and on each embarkation.
• "Each embarkation" meant you can do so at each port of call. It was an unwritten rule and one of the coolest "tips and tricks"). However, purchasing sodas at call ports is rather expensive.

(NEW) Carnival drink policy changes

Starting July 9, 2015, Carnival Cruise Lines changed radically its beverage policy, implementing new rules on bringing water on Carnival ships. Signs with beverage policy changes were posted at all homeports.

• Passengers are no longer allowed to bring their own bottled drinks on the ships. The main goal (as officially announced) is to lower the number of attempts by customers to smuggle alcohol using PVC bottles. Checking PVC bottles for liquor smuggling slows down the embarkation process, as security staff checks each bottle.
• Passengers are allowed to bring max 12 unopened cans (volume 12-oz) or cartons per person. The list of canned drinks includes soda, juices, milk, sparkling water - stored in carry-on luggage.
• Large coolers are not allowed, but you can take small coolers (max size 12x12x12 inches, or 30x30x30 cm) as carry-on luggage. These are used for non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications.

Since October 2015, in all call ports, Carnival passengers are allowed to bring nonalcoholic drinks on the ship. The allowance is only if the drinks are canned (or in cartons 12 ounces / 0,35 L or less). The enforced limit per person is 12 cans/cartons. Previously, the allowance for boarding the ship with beverages was for homeports only. The new rule didn't affect the ban on bottled beverages (enforced in July).

Carnival's wine policy remained unchanged, allowing passengers to bring 1 bottle of wine/champagne per person (750 ml, unopened, in carry-on luggage). No other liquor is allowed on board. Also unchanged is the rule about bringing distilled water onboard, excluding only passengers who need it for babies or CPAP machines ("continuous positive airway pressure").

(NEW) Bottled water prices

Carnival Cruise Line's bottled water prices were USD 2,99 (plus tax) for a 12-pack. The pricing is if you buy it before the voyage. The pack will be delivered to your cabin before departure. Onboard water price was USD 4.99 (plus tax).

However, In March 2016, bottled water prices were raised by over 30%. The price for 12-pack of water was USD 3.99, (up from USD 2.99, or 33 cents per 17-oz bottle). In December 2016, Carnival raised water prices again. The current bottled water price for 12-pack (16,9 fluid oz bottles) is USD 4.50 (plus 18% gratuity if ordered onboard) or over 10% increase.

Sneaking alcohol on Carnival cruise

This is a "cruise alcohol policy" of "cheap fun" people - read why some do it anyway. With Carnival, besides the thrill of sneaking something (alcohol or whatever), most smugglers do it because ships' alcohol prices are not cheap. Even if you order liquor through Fun Shops (prior departure) it's 2-3 times more expensive than in your local store. Some do it simply because Carnival doesn't supply their favorite brand.

The Fun Shops service allows pre-purchasing liquor to be delivered to staterooms the second day of the voyage. Online purchases' deadline is 1-week prior departure. Two useful "bringing alcohol on ships" tips:

• If you purchase your alcohol from Fun Shops, you're allowed to put your booze in a stainless steel flask (or Carnival tumbler) and carry it around the ship. Be sure not to take it with you while disembarking in ports. If security personnel find it, they will confiscate the flask when you re-board the ship. Of course, only if there's alcohol in it.
• Pack your empty flask in the carry-on bag. If you pack it in checked baggage, you'll most probably get called to the "naughty guys room" to open luggage for inspection.

How to smuggle alcohol on Carnival cruises?

This is the smuggler's know-how for sneaking alcohol on cruise ships in general. The question of how to smuggle alcohol on ships is one of the industry's oldest. Smuggling alcohol is against cruise lines policy rules. This practice is forbidden, illegal, emotionally dangerous - don't do it! Ship's personnel check passengers' luggage - if you get caught, the hooch will be confiscated (basically that's all).

• The confiscated bottle(s)/cans are stored for safekeeping until the morning of the voyage's last day). The "illegal" beverages (liquor/water/soda/wine) must be in original, manufacturer-sealed containers - other containers won't be returned. All unsealed liquids are discarded, without any compensation.
• "Rum Runner flask" (costs around $10) has the best chance to go through security checks. These flasks are usually smuggled in checked baggage and are almost undetectable. However, if the security checks your bags for another reason and sees them, flasks will be taken and not returned.
• "Wine Rack" is the latest booze-smuggling device. This boob enhancing, alcohol-filled bra contains over 25oz/750ml of your chosen liquid. They are absolutely right by saying this is way better than a regular boob job, and way cheaper too. Women look beautiful and save money on overpriced cruise drinks. The sneaking alcohol tool price is only US$30. The same price is the "BeerBelly" (capacity up to 80oz/2,4L).
• Adults with a record of sneaking alcohol on Carnival ships, adults buying liquor for underage passengers and adults with other regular violations of the company's beverage policy may end up even with "early" (no-compensation) disembarkation or get banned for life.

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. There’s no getting around it. If you want to buy booze, you have to be of legal age or face some serious consequences.

But what about on the drinking age on a cruise? Do you still have to be 21? After all, we’ve all heard of “international waters” — a magical place just a few miles offshore where the normal rules don’t apply. Doesn’t that mean if you are under the legal drinking age, but not in the U.S., that you can live it up?

Well, not so fast. If you are under the legal drinking age on shore, there is some good news in that yes, you can drink on your cruise… but not necessarily on the ship.

Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship in North America

Ok, first things first. Most cruises won’t let you drink on the cruise ship if you aren’t 21 years old (assuming your cruise is departing and returning to the U.S.) . Here are the official policies of three major cruise lines as listed on their websites:

Royal Caribbean The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating in North America is twenty-one (21).

Carnival Guests must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol onboard. Proper I.D with birth date is required.

Princess Cruises The age for drinking on Princess ships is 21 years old.

So if you are sailing one of these cruise lines, even with a parent on board, then you can’t drink while on the ship.

However, Norwegian Cruise Lines is more lax in their policy. If you are considered a “young adult” (meaning 18-20 years old) and you are sailing with a parent who signs a waiver, then you can drink wine and beer aboard the ship — but not cocktails.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol.

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian Cruise Line permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel.

Drinking Age on Non-North America Sailings

Many countries have a drinking age that’s lower than the 21 years old seen in the United States. If you are sailing a cruise outside of North America, then the drinking age onboard is likely 18 years old . This usually includes sailings from Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

For example, Royal Caribbean makes the following adjustment for the onboard drinking age for many trips outside of North America:

• The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is eighteen (18).

Princess also specifies that the drinking age is 18 years old on its cruises in Australia, China, Europe, Singapore, and South America.

In short, if sailing from outside North America, then the drinking age is normally lower.

Drinking in a Port of Call

Once you are in a port and off the ship, the cruise line’s rules no longer apply to you. Instead, you are under the laws and regulations of that country. Therefore, if the country’s legal age limit is 18 to consume or buy alcohol, then that’s the rule that applies when ashore — not the cruise ship’s policy. Note that if you are on a cruise line’s private island, even if it is in a country with a lower drinking age, then the cruise line’s rules on drinking will apply.

For those under 21, you’ll be happy to know that the legal drinking age throughout the Caribbean is 18 years or under. In addition, a couple of countries have drinking limits of 16.

Drinking Age for Selected Countries

• Antigua: 16 years old
• Bahamas: 18 years old
• Belize: 18 years old
• Bermuda: 18 years old
• British Virgin Islands: 18 years old
• Cayman Islands: 18 years old
• Haiti: 16 years old
• Honduras: 18 years old
• Jamaica: 18 years old
• Mexico: 18 years old
• Puerto Rico: 18 years old
• US Virgin Islands: 18 years old

What if I Am Caught Drinking While Underage?

The rules are very clear about drinking on a cruise and in port. If you are under 21 and sailing from North America, you better wait until you arrive at a port before taking a sip. If you are under 18, then most ports and the cruise ship are off limits.

But what if you decide to sneak a drink anyway?

If you are on the cruise ship, there’s a chance that it could end your trip early. Carnival makes the following statement in its ticket contract:

Guests who attempt to purchase alcohol by using false identification or the Sail & Sign card of a Guest who is twenty-one or older will be deemed in violation of this policy. Any Guest twenty-one or older who attempts to or purchases alcohol for any Guest under twenty-one will also be deemed in violation of this policy. Guest agrees that Carnival has the right to disembark any Guest who violates this policy and as well as any adults traveling with minors who violate this policy or any other shipboard regulation .

While getting kicked off the ship may be a possibility, we find it unlikely. That’s not to suggest that you try and test your luck.

If you are caught drinking underage while in port, you are subject to the laws of that country. Depending on the country, that could mean serious legal issues at worst. At best, it could make you sweat getting back to the ship in time for departure.

If you’re planning a cruise vacation, you’re probably wondering about the drinking age on cruise ships. As a seasoned cruiser, I know that navigating the rules and regulations surrounding alcohol consumption can be a bit tricky.

Although cruise ships sail in international waters, the minimum drinking age depends on your ship, itinerary, and the laws governing your departure and return port.

We’ll help you understand the minimum drinking age on a cruise ship to help you prepare for your next vacation.

What is The Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship?

The legal drinking age on cruise ships depends on the cruise line and the itinerary.

Most cruise lines sailing in North America have a minimum drinking age of 21. Cruises departing or returning to the U.S. follow the U.S. U.S.deral, which sets the national minimum drinking age at 21. 

Although Mexico and Canada have minimum drinking ages of 18 and 19, all U.S.-based cruise lines set the minimum drinking age at 21, even when sailing in international waters.

The cruise line staff strictly enforces the minimum drinking age. Passengers caught drinking alcohol under the age limit or giving alcohol to guests under the minimum drinking age may face consequences, including disembarkation.

Many countries have drinking ages lower than the U.S. Cruises saU.S.g to Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America often have a lower legal drinking age of 18.

Minimum Drinking Age on Major Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has a clear and strict policy that guests must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol on board. Carnival enforces the policy across all areas of the ship where alcohol is sold or served, including bars, lounges, and gift shops.

It’s important to note that Carnival Cruise Line reserves the right to request identification from any passenger before purchasing alcohol. The cruise line staff refuse to sell alcohol to anyone who cannot provide proper identification or appears to be under the influence.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruise’s minimum drinking age of 21 applies to all Celebrity cruise ships and itineraries.

However, on sailings departing from Europe, South America, and Australia a parent who is sailing with their child can sign a waiver alowing 18-20 year olds to consume alcoholic beverages.

If a guest celebrates their 21st birthday on the cruise ship, they may ask the Front Desk Manager to adjust the ship’s records to permit them to consume alcohol for the remainder of the cruise.

Costa Cruises

Costa Cruises has a simple policy: the minimum onboard drinking age is 21 for sailings with U.S. departures and 18 for sailings from non-US ports.

Cunard Line

Cunard Line’s minimum drinking age is 18, except in U.S. waters, where the minimum drinking age is 21.

This means that when a Cunard ship is sailing in international waters or visiting ports outside the United States, passengers 18 years of age or older are allowed to purchase and consume alcohol on board.

However, when the ship enters U.S. territories or ports, the minimum drinking age is raised to 21 to comply with U.S. federal law.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line has a minimum drinking age of 21 and requires a valid photo I.D. to purchase and consume alcohol on Disney Cruise Ships .

However, parents and guardians can sign a Beverage Consent Form allowing their 18- to 20-year-old children to purchase and consume alcohol on round-trip cruises departing from any European country with a lower drinking age. The same policy applies to repositioning cruises between Hawaii and Australia.

Additionally, the drinking age is lowered to 18 on round-trip cruises departing Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and Brisbane.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises’ minimum drinking age for cruises departing from the United States is 21. For cruises departing from countries other than the United States, the minimum drinking age is 18.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) guest policy has minimum drinking age of 21. However, passengers 18-20 years old may purchase and consume beer and wine if traveling with a parent or legal guardian and in international waters, except for sailings in Alaska and Hawaii. The parent or legal guardian must be onboard the sailing and sign a Parent Consent Form for their child at the Front Desk.

If a guest celebrates their 21st birthday during the cruise, they may ask the Guest Services Manager to modify the ship’s records to permit their consumption of alcohol during the remainder of the cruise. When changing the ship’s records, you will be asked to present a valid government-issued I.D. to show your proof of age.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises sailings from North America have a minimum age of 21 for consuming alcohol on their ships.

However, sailings from Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, and New Zealand have a legal drinking age of 18 on Princess cruise ships , and cruises between Japanese ports have a minimum age of 20.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International’s minimum drinking age is 21 for North Americans and itineraries visiting Dubai. The legal drinking age is 18 for sailings in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

The minimum drinking age is 21 at Royal Caribbean’s private destinations, such as Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee.

Virgin Voyages

The drinking age on Virgin Voyages ships varies depending on the location:

• In international waters, the minimum drinking age is 18 years old.
• When the ship is in United States waters, the minimum drinking age is 21.
• In other ports of call, Virgin Voyages adheres to the laws and regulations of the specific country.

Drinking Age on Private Islands

Many cruise lines operate private islands and resorts. Some cruise line private islands have different drinking ages than the cruise line ships.

Here is a list of the drinking ages at many of the cruise lines private destinations:

• Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Royal Caribbean Labadee Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Carnival Cruise Line’s Half Moon Cay Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Princess Cruises Princess Cays Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve Drinking Age : 21 Years Old
• Celebrity Cruises’ Little Stirrup Cay Drinking Age : 21 Years Old

Consuming Alcohol in Ports of Call

Once you leave the ship, you are governed by the laws and regulations of the port city. You are not bound by the cruise ship’s rules when you’re on land. In other words, if the country’s legal drinking age is 18, you can consume alcohol in ports of call, even if the ship’s drinking age is 21.

You’ll be happy to know that the drinking age in most Caribbean countries is 18. If you’re unsure, you can ask your cruise line staff or the port attendants.

Carnival Cruise Line shares a secret adult beverage policy

C arnival Cruise Line has a reputation for being a party-heavy cruise line. That reputation is well earned in a positive way, although sometimes things can get a bit ugly.

It's not fair to paint Carnival passengers as drunks pounding their drinks and starting fights. Incidents happen, and when they do the fight videos tend to go viral. but the vast majority of cruises feature people simply indulging a bit and having fun on what Carnival has dubbed its "Fun Ships."

Carnival, unlike Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, limits its passengers to 15 alcoholic drinks per day. That holds whether you buy the Cheers drink package or you purchase alcohol a la carte. Once you have purchased your 15th alcoholic drink, you're shut off until the next day.

Many passengers who buy the Cheers package think the 15-drink limit is unfair because the price of 15 beers is way different from that of 15 cocktails. Still, the cruise line has pushed back on any attempts passengers have made to eliminate the limit.

Carnival also reserves the right to shut off a passenger at any time. How that works is something the company has rarely talked about, but Carnival Chief Communications Officer Chris Chiames recently outlined some insider info on the cruise line's alcohol and passenger policies.

Carnival has its eyes on you

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald reached out to Chiames for some clarification around its alcohol consumption and intoxication policies.

“Some of John’s readers seem fixated on how we monitor alcohol consumption and whether the Cheers! package treats guests differently than guests who do not purchase the Cheers! package," Chiames wrote.

The communications executive seemed a little annoyed at how people might think that way.

"I’m going to post this once, and only once, and this is all I will have to say about this," Chiames added. "We monitor the alcohol consumption of all guests. The actual consumption is combined with other monitoring tools where servers, bartenders and security are trained to look for behavioral signals that a guest has reached his/her limit of safe consumption." 

Chiames also made clear that the cruise line knows the tricks of the people trying to beat the system. 

"Not all 'consumption' is equal," he wrote. "Guests who purchase alcohol ala carte have options like buying a bucket of beers for the table. Or a bottle of wine that some guests may share, and another guest may consume entirely by themselves. There are also shared cocktails."

The cruise line knows how to keep an eye on its passengers to keep them safe. 

"That’s why we use a combination of factors to monitor consumption," he wrote. "Now some guests might be creative and figure out ways to drink and never or rarely interact with a server or bartender. That’s why the security team is also part of this plan. If you ever have a concern about someone’s alcohol consumption, please quietly point that out to a member of the security team."

Carnival passengers share their drink-limit thoughts

Most of the responses to Heald's post were personal experiences, not really an answer to what Chiames wrote.

"I always get the cheers package, hit my 15 drinks without getting smashed," wrote Stephanie Carter. "I scatter my drinks breakfast, lunch, dinner, casino, and nightclub. I've seen people who hit their drink maximum by noon, those are the ignorant ones, too much too fast. I don't hit everyday the whole cruise but sometimes I do, everyone's tolerance level is different."

Some passengers clearly trust Carnival's security team.

"I get the Cheers package, as do my travel companions," posted Rachel Tatro. "Sometimes the magic 15 limit is hit, rarely. I trust the bartenders, servers and security to monitor and deal with the alcohol consumption and resulting behaviors of others, and mine (if I get obnoxious)."

One post said that security does not always get things right.

"I remember being ‘cut off’ in the casino one time because me and my sister-in-law (plus a few other patrons nearby) were having entirely too much fun in the casino…laughing, rubbing our machines, hooting and hollering for each other, celebrating the small wins (and some bigger ones) as if we’d won the jackpots…and they thought we’d had too many, but we definitely were not even close to drunk or tipsy for that matter - we are just always like that in the casinos," wrote Belinda YG.

Azamara Cruise Lines Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On an Azamara Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. On ships in Europe and South America, where the legal drinking age is 18, parents can sign a waiver to allow then to drink at age 18.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on an Azamara Cruise. Transatlantic cruises require children to be 12 months of age
• Unaccompanied Minors/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: Guests are required to be 21 years of age (on embarkation day) to travel on their own. Guest ages will be verified at the time of boarding.

Carnival Cruise Lines Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Carnival Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Carnival Cruise. Transatlantic cruises require a child to be at least 12 months old.
• Unaccompanied Minors/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: Guests are required to be 21 years of age (on embarkation day) to travel in their own cabin. 18 to 20 year olds can book their own cabin as long as they are traveling with smeone over the age of 25. Those 13 to 17 are permitted to stay in their own staterooms, up to three cabins away from a family member or guardian who is at least 25 years old, although we recommend connecting staterooms in these situations. Exceptions are made for cruisers younger than 21 who are married and traveling with a spouse, or in the military. Marriage certificate or proof of active military status is required.

Celebrity Cruise Lines   Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Celebrity Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. On ships in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand the drinking age is 18.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Celebrity Cruise. Transatlantic cruises or any itinerary that has more than 3 consecutive seas days require the child to be 12 months of age.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: Guests are required to be 21 years of age (on embarkation day) to travel on their own. Minors can stay in their own cabins, but they must either be directly across the hall from, next door or connected to the stateroom of an adult, at least 21 years old, in the same travel party.

Crystal Cruises Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Crystal Cruise you can consume hard liquor if you are over 21 years of age. Beer and wine can be consumed at 18 years of age, but when docked within 3 miles of port guest must be 21.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Crystal Cruise.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: Guests age 17 and under must be in a stateroom either with a parent or guardian over 21 years of age. No one under 18 is permitted in the Ship’s casino or to participate in any monetary-based games of chance including Bingo.

Disney Cruises Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – The drinking age on board a Disney Cruise is 21, and a valid photo I.D. is required. However, during roundtrip cruises departing from any European country that has a lower drinking age, parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.
• Infant – The minimum age to sail on a Disney Cruise is 6 months, except on trans-ocean cruises and voyages to Hawaii or the Panama Canal, where passengers must be at least 12 months old.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: All minors must be in a cabin with an adult age 21 or over.

Holland America Cruise Line Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Holland America Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. The legal drinking age on board will be 18 for voyages which are round trip from Europe, China, Hong Kong, Singapore or Taiwan. The legal drinking age is 20 for cruises that are round trip from Japan.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Holland America Cruise. Transatlanic, Asia, South America, the South Pacific and Hawaii cruises where there are more than two consecutive sea days require the baby to be at least 12 month old.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: Passengers must be 21 years old to travel on their own. Travelers under the age of 21 must share a cabin with parent or guardian. Certain cruises require passengers 21 – 24 years old to be accompanied by someone 25 years or older.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. Beer and wine can be consumed by 18 to 20 year olds when in international waters.
• Infant – children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Norwegian Cruise Line Cruise. Voyages of 3 or more days at sea have a minimum age requirement of 12 months.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum Age to have your own cabin: Norwegian Cruise lines policy is that a young adult under the age of 21 must be accompanied in the same stateroom (or a connecting or adjoining stateroom) by a guest 21 years of age at the time of boarding. Minors are considered under the age of 18. There are exceptions for married couples & active military.

Oceania Cruise Lines Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On an Oceania Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. Beer and wine can be consumed at age 18 when in international waters.
• Infant – Children must be 1 year of age to travel on an Oceania Cruise. Oceania does not provide for the care entertainment or supervision of children.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: Any guest under the age of 18 must be accompanied by and occupy the same stateroom as an adult 18 years or older.

Princess Cruises Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Princess Cruise you can consume alcohol if you are over the age of 21. For Australia, New Zealand, China, Europe and Singapore the drinking age is 18.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Princess Cruise. With two or more consecutive days at sea or a transatlantic cruise, the child must be 12 months old.
• Unaccompanied Minor/ Minimum age to have your own cabin: Princess requires 21 years of age for your own cabin. An exception is made for family groups where multiple cabins are booked. In those cases, the minimum age is 16 to be in a cabin.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Age Policy

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Royal Caribbean Cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age in North America or the Caribbean. Australia, New Zealand, South America, Europe and Asia require the guest to be 18.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Royal Caribbean Cruise.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: No guest younger than 21 years of age will be assigned a stateroom unless accompanied in the same stateroom by an adult 21 years or older for cruises in North America. In other parts of the world an 18 year old can have their own cabin.

Regent Cruise Lines Age Restrictions

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Regent Cruise Line cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age.
• Infant – Children must be 12 months of age to travel on a Regent Cruise Line cruise. Regent does not provide for the care, entertainment or supervision of children.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: Any guest under the age of 18 must be accompanied by and occupy the same suite as an adult 18 years or older.

Seabourn Cruise Line Age Requirements

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Seabourn Cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Seabourn Cruise. There are no special programs for children.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin:  No guest under 21 years of age is permitted to book a cruise and any guest under 21 years of age must travel in a suite with a guest 21 years or older who shall assume responsibility for their care during the cruise.

Silversea Cruise Line Age Policies

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Silversea Cruise you must be 21 years of age to consume alcohol.
• Infant – Children must be 6 months of age to travel on a Silversea Cruise. On Silversea Expeditions the minimum age is 6.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied in the same or connecting suite by a parent or other responsible adult over the age of 21.

Star Clippers Cruise Line Age Restrictions

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Star Clipper Cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age
• Infant – There is no minimum age to sail on a Star Clipper Cruise. Under 2 years pays only port fees and gratuities.
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: The minimum age to have your own cabin on a Star Clipper Cruise is 18 years of age.

Viking Cruise Lines Age Limit

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Viking Cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age
• Infant – Children must be 12 years of age to sail on a Viking Cruise
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: The minimum age to have your own cabin on a Viking Cruise is 21 years.

Windstar Cruise Lines Age Policy

• Alcoholic Beverage Policy – On a Windstar Cruise you can consume alcohol at 21 years of age
• Infant – Windstar does not accept children under 8 years of age
• Unaccompanied Minor/Minimum age to have your own cabin: Windstar requires at least one person in each cabin to be 21 years of age. An exception may be made for a married couple as long as they are both 18.
