From devouring cheesecakes to racing go-karts, there's something for everyone to enjoy in Greensboro.

The Piedmont Triad is what locals call the region containing three major cities in North Carolina, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point — with Greensboro being the largest of this bunch. The city's history spans decades, from a defining moment in the American Revolution to a sit-in that helped spark the Civil Rights Movement. Today, local artists and museums make history come alive for residents and visitors. In addition to numerous museums, a zoo, an aquarium, laser tag and a retro bowling alley will keep any kids entertained. Weekenders will love a brewery with a cool vibe and a winery in the country, just outside city limits. The whole family can enjoy Greensboro's wealth of parks and gardens, which lend ample greenery to the city's name. You might know North Carolina for its barbecue, but did you know Greensboro is also a cheesecake lover's dream? The city is full of surprises, not the least of which is a sprawling antique mecca or a former hodge-podge thrift shop that now serves to nurture nostalgic and artistic souls. A city once considered the gateway to the United States, Greensboro will surprise you in all the best ways.

International Civil Rights Center and Museum

On Feb. 1, 1960, four Black college students sat at the lunch counter in Greensboro's F. W. Woolworth department store and asked for service. When they were refused, they staged a sit-in that eventually led to the desegregation of the counter five months later. This brave act in the name of civil rights is the centerpiece of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. Preserved and intact in its original location, the counter is just one of 13 permanent exhibitions at the 35,000-square-foot museum. Recent visitors explain that while the museum's content is emotional and at times heart-wrenching, the experience is worthwhile. A guided tour brings these important stories to life; a staff-led tour of the museum is 75 minutes and costs $25, but a filmed and seated version is also available for $15 (students receive a discounted rate). Reservations are required for tours, but walk-ins are welcome to the museum. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum is closed on Sundays.

Where can you find an aquarium, a zoo, a 3D theater, a museum and a ropes course in one place? Trick question: It's the Greensboro Science Center. This science-based complex is a wonderland for animal and nature lovers, with blue frogs and golden monkeys. Admission includes the museum, the zoo and the aquarium for less than $20, and past travelers say that the museum offers activities for all ages. For something particularly thrilling, visitors can purchase tickets for SKYWILD, a treetop adventure park that encourages participants aged 8 and older to mimic the motions of various animals on a suspended ropes course. If your family is looking for an activity that's a bit tamer, the gorgeous Greensboro carousel is located on the grounds. In addition to the traditional horses, the carousel also features animals that are symbolic of North Carolina.

Were you looking to purchase a neon jukebox or 19th-century baby carriage? How about crystal salt and pepper shakers? It's all here, and a multitude of vendors curate the most interesting items to entice collectors and onlookers alike. You'll be sure to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir, but some visitors note that the price tags are occasionally higher than expected.

Get Lost in Elsewhere

Elsewhere Living Museum is a three-story former thrift store that self-describes as a collaborative learning laboratory. The quirky space is chockfull of memorabilia and hosts artists in residence. Most pieces come from the personal collection of Sylvia Gray, who acquired the items over 58 years and ran the thrift store from the '70s until she died in 1997. The space is on the oddball spectrum for sure, with some visitors likening it to hoarding, while others say they connected nostalgically to the items, which include vintage toys and dolls. More than 50 projects, primarily eclectic art exhibits, are hosted each year, so check the calendar before your visit. Private tours can be arranged, but a $5 suggested donation covers general admission.

Elsewhere Museum plans to reopen with regular hours in spring 2022.

Experience the Local Barbecue Culture

Top things to do in Greensboro, North Carolina

North Carolina takes its barbecue very seriously, and Greensboro is no exception. Follow your nose — or the critical consensus — to some of the smokiest, sauciest joints in town. Fans call Stamey's Barbecue a staple, praising its chopped pork and hush puppies. Stamey's Barbecue was founded in 1930, and they now offer two locations in the city, including a drive-thru where you can grab some fresh barbecue to go. Country Barbecue is known for its ribs, and fans love the sides of red slaw and giant biscuits. Mac's Speed Shop has a few franchises, but its Greensboro supporters say it's creatively presented barbecue with banging burnt ends and sweet tea. Whatever you decide on, be sure to ask locals about Lexington-style versus Eastern-style; yes, even within the world of North Carolina barbecue, there are still differences.

Center City Park and LeBauer Park

These two parks are located in downtown Greensboro, providing excellent green space for travelers and locals alike. Center City Park offers numerous walking paths, fountains designed to represent regional geographic features and a band shell for live performances. Catty-corner from Center City Park, LeBauer Park is especially accommodating for anyone with sensory sensitivities. Peacehaven Sensory Space, located within the LeBauer Park, offers a sculptural wall designed for anyone with sensory processing disorders. LeBauer Park also has a playground, interactive fountains, two cafes and a 17,000-square-foot lawn to host outdoor events. A 1-acre ornamental garden is also nestled in LeBauer Park, and kids can splash about at the LeBauer Park Splash Pad from May to September.

Follow the Map to Public Art

Greensboro has more than 150 works of public art scattered throughout the city. While tracking each display can prove challenging, Public Art GSO (part of Greensboro's Public Art Endowment) offers a handy map of their locations. Find a bronze sculpture memorializing firefighters or sculptural gates inviting viewers to enter the world of art. Kotis Street Art is a huge contributor to the Greensboro public art scene with a variety of murals — they're also found by accessing an interactive online map. Take a selfie with a realistic-looking girl and balloon or muse over abstract geometric shapes. Most murals are concentrated around Central Greensboro in the College Hill and Idlewood neighborhoods.

Take a Downtown Trolley Tour

The historic Gate City trolley tour departs daily from various downtown Greensboro locations, including four hotels and the Greensboro History Museum. This two-hour guided tour takes place on an air-conditioned, cushioned trolley with five to thirteen passengers. Tours generally cover Greensboro's most significant universities, businesses and public art. Distinct routes mean tours can also touch on everything from architectural landmarks to the city's Quaker roots. Tickets must be purchased online in advance, and they start at $42 per person (discounted rates are available for children and groups). Children under the age of 4 are not allowed on the trolley tour. Comedy and brewpub tours are held on select Fridays, and a hot dog tasting tour is conducted monthly.

North Carolina’s third-largest city may not have much name recognition, but it has a surprising array of attractions. Wildlife-filled parks, cutting-edge street art and historic sites that played a pivotal role during the fight for Civil Rights are all part of Greensboro’s diverse backdrop.

Whether you’re traveling solo or bringing the family along, Greensboro has plenty of variety, from treetop walks above the zoo to catching rock shows at tiny nightclubs. You can make the most of your time by penciling in these top experiences in Greensboro, North Carolina .

The lunch counter at Greensboro's Woolworths, site of the 1960 sit-in that launched a movement, now the International Civil Rights Center and Museum

Visit the International Civil Rights Center & Museum

One of the watershed moments during the Civil Rights movement happened in a Woolworth's store in Greensboro. On February 1, 1960, four Black students from North Carolina A&T State University held a sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter.

Others joined their cause, and soon sit-ins spread across the country, as non-violent protests brought the world’s attention to segregationist and deeply racist policies.

In 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the sit-in, the former Woolworth’s reopened as the International Civil Rights Center and Museum . News reels, photographs, film footage and audio narratives – along with the original lunch counter – tell the powerful story of the Civil Rights struggle, both in Greensboro and across America.

Look for wildlife in the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park

Northwest of the city center, a piece of verdant wilderness sprouts amid the urban landscape. Though small in size, the seven-acre Bog Garden at Benjamin Park provides a memorable setting to connect with nature.

A half-mile elevated boardwalk meanders through forest and wetland, passing a recirculating waterfall, trickling creeks and a lake where blue herons stalk their prey beneath towering black willows and bald cypress trees. Come in early morning or late afternoon for the best chance to see wildlife, from goldfinches and muskrats to foxes and woodpeckers, and even the odd river otter from time to time.

Peer back in time at the Greensboro History Museum

Set in a former Presbyterian church built in the 1890s, this Smithsonian-affiliated museum provides an illuminating perspective on major events that shaped the region.

Interactive exhibits inside the 17,000-sq-ft space delve into pre-colonial history, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and industries, like textiles, that shaped Greensboro in the 20th century.

Temporary exhibitions are among the best in town, and typically delve into pressing topics such as democracy, immigration and oral histories of marginalized people. The admission-free entry makes a visit here one of the best free things to do in Greensboro.

Staff can guide you through an ever-changing selection of varietals, from a refreshing vinho verde from Portugal’s Minho region to an exuberant Châteauneuf-du-Pape from France’s Rhône Valley. You can also pick up a bottle or two for a picnic the next day.

Stop and smell the roses at Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden

Greensboro is blessed with green space, thanks to the four distinct public gardens located on the northwest side of town. For a verdant, flower-filled stroll, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden is the pick of the bunch.

Across 7.5 acres, you’ll find thematic areas that include a wildflower stroll, rock gardens and a fragrance-filled azalea and camellia zone, plus various sculptures by Dutch artist Michiel VanderSommen.

There’s never an admission charge at the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, making it a great option for a free day out and about.

Take a walk on the wild side at Elsewhere

Greensboro embraces its art-loving eccentric side at  Elsewhere . This three-story former thrift store is packed with ephemera gathered by collector Sylvia Gray over the span of 58 years – and transformed into delightfully bizarre installations by contemporary artists.

You’ll feel like you’re stepping through Alice’s looking glass while wandering through the Ribbon Room and the Alone Zone, or peering beneath vintage textiles in the Aviary. Given the thought-provoking designs on display, it’s no surprise Elsewhere is considered one of the most unique things to do in Greensboro.

Hear top local bands at Flat Iron

Greensboro's great nightlife begins (and perhaps ends) at the Flat , a convivial space downtown where you can catch some of the best bands around. The drinks are reasonably priced, and there's live music most nights, with a lineup that ranges from southern folk and indie rock to jazz and roots, plus the odd DJ session.

See creatures great and small at the Greensboro Science Center

The Greensboro Science Center  is one of North Carolina's best activities for families, and its science museum, zoo and aquarium draw animal lovers and knowledge seekers of all ages. Creature highlights include waddling penguins, brilliantly hued poison-dart frogs and toothy Nile crocodiles.

You can also catch film screenings in the 40ft domed theater, or climb your way through the treetops at Skywild, an adrenaline-fueled ropes course set high above the zoo. If you’re traveling with small children in tow, don’t miss the farm, where you can interact with goats, miniature horses and chickens.

Paddle the placid waters of Lake Brandt

There are lots of fun things to do in Greensboro, with some of the best activities providing a hearty dose of nature with a bit of aquatic adventure. Grab a picnic lunch and head up to Lake Brandt, where you can hire a kayak, canoe or paddleboard for the day and explore the forest-backed waters of this 816-acre reservoir.

You can also hike or go for a trail run on an 11-mile loop that skirts along the shoreline. While it’s a great nature escape year round, don't miss the autumn blazes in mid- to late October, when birches, maples and beech trees blaze with color.

People walking and cars parked in front of The Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro with marquee lights lit up at night.

Take a backstage tour at the Carolina Theatre

Greensboro’s much-loved neoclassical theater has been around for nearly a hundred years, and it continues to stage a wide-ranging lineup of musicals, concerts, film screenings and comedy shows. It's also home of the Greensboro Opera and the Greensboro Ballet. But no matter what's on in the 1100-seat main hall, with its glittering chandeliers, ornate plasterwork and marble columns, it’s hard not to feel the magic in the air.

Upstairs, the Crown is a more intimate venue that stages theatre, dance, spoken word and jazz and folk concerts. History fans can book a private tour to learn about Carolina’s highs and lows over the years – in the 1970s it was nearly torn down to make way for a parking lot.

Hunt for eye-popping street art across town

You won’t have to strain to spot some of the best street art in Greensboro - or even the best street art in North Carolina. Kotis Street Art showcases the works of exceptional painters from across the country and beyond in some 200 installations dotting the city.

Don't miss Australian artist Adnate’s photorealistic portraits of Native American Lumbee members (1201 Battleground Ave and 1205 W Bessemer) or Dare Coulter’s inspiring mural of Black Cowboys at 1421 E Cone Blvd.

The Ultimate Weekend Travel Guide to Greensboro, North Carolina

greensboro nc travel and tourism

I didn’t mean to take quite so long to visit Greensboro. But when you’re exploring the region one weekend at a time, well, your travels can feel like they move at a glacial pace.

But one thing’s for sure – after a recent visit to Greensboro’s Triad neighbor , I knew I just couldn’t wait any longer to visit this essential North Carolina city.

Since moving to Charlotte, I’ve heard so many things about the arts and culture scene in Greensboro, and even more about the food (which, let’s be honest, is my primary motivation for traveling).

So, Michael and I took one rare free weekend in July to finally cross this destination off our list, and today I’m bringing you my guide to the Piedmont Triad’s largest city. Up first, though, a little history lesson…

ABOUT GREENSBORO

A sculpture of jeans

Greensboro’s history is one comprised of resilience, progress, and creativity. From its early days as a center for commerce and transportation to its pivotal role in the civil rights movement, Greensboro’s past has shaped its present identity. Perhaps no moment in Greensboro’s history is more pivotal than the Woolworth’s sit-in , a courageous act of protest in downtown Greensboro in 1960, which marked a turning point in the fight for civil rights. Today, Greensboro’s vibrant arts scene, dynamic neighborhoods, and commitment to social justice honor its past while embracing the innovation needed to sustain itself for the future.

Five things you may not know about Greensboro

  • Greensboro is the third largest city by population in North Carolina (after Charlotte and Raleigh ).
  • The earliest inhabitants of the region were the Saura (or Cheraw) and Keyauwee .
  • Greensboro was originally spelled Greensborough, before dropping the extra letters at the end of the 19th century.
  • A number of colleges and universities call Greensboro home, such as North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Bennett College, University of North Carolina Greensboro, and Greensboro College.
  • The author William Sidney Porter, better known to the world as O. Henry, was born in Greensboro in 1862.

Though the modes of transportation may have changed since Greensboro earned its nickname of The Gate City, today it continues to welcome visitors with classic Southern hospitality. Here’s how to spend a weekend in this North Carolina city:

THINGS TO DO IN GREENSBORO

Greensboro history museum.

The exterior and interior of the Greensboro History Museum

If, like me, you grew up outside of the region and are still catching up on your North Carolina history, the Greensboro History Museum is a great place to begin your weekend in Greensboro. Housed within a historic former church and memorial building, the museum traces the evolution of the city from its early days until now. Visitors travel through the centuries via exhibits, which include artifacts, interactive displays, and more. The museum doesn’t gloss over the rough edges of history, either, honoring the city’s strides and struggles throughout the Civil Rights Movement. You’ll also find an in-depth look at Greensboro’s denim industry and learn how it shaped its present identity. Admission is free, making it an accessible stop for all.

GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art

Interior of GreenHill

You’ll find the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art within the impressive Greensboro Cultural Center , a hub for celebrating the city’s diverse and vibrant artistry. GreenHill is dedicated to showcasing established and emerging North Carolina artists within its gallery space and shop, in all types of media. Beyond its usual gallery hours, GreenHill hosts a number of events and workshops, taking the concept of art off the walls and inviting everyone to participate. Find information about the current exhibition here , and check out the calendar to see what events may coincide with your visit.

Crooked Tail Cat Cafe

Cats at a cat cafe in Greensboro

Even if you’re not looking to take home a Greensboro souvenir that purrs, a visit to Crooked Tail Cat Cafe is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The cat cafe partners with a local rescue to fill its space with sweet, adoptable kitties who are ready to socialize. Reservations are recommended, but you just might luck into a free spot. If so, grab a coffee from the cafe in the back, a toy ribbon or feather, and get ready to play!

Greensboro Botanical Gardens

Alyssa walks through the flowers

Greensboro’s public gardens span four locations, each with a distinct personality. I had the chance to visit the neighboring Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden and Bog Garden at Benjamin Park during my visit, making it an efficient stop for time-strapped visitors. Park your car at the lot on Hobbs Road, and enjoy a peaceful escape just minutes from the city core. Meander and snap photos or do as many locals were doing and bring a book to simply enjoy time in nature. No matter how you choose to spend your time, admission to Greensboro Botanical Gardens is always free.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Sign at an entrance to the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park commemorates the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, a critical engagement during the Revolutionary War and a pivotal moment in American history. Today’s park covers about 250 acres of the approximate 1,000-acre battlefield and is enjoyed by many Greensburgers* as a place to exercise. But nearly all of the park’s monuments and displays are accessible by car, forming an educational driveable loop conveying the sacrifices made and the strategic maneuvers that unfolded. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park serves as both a living history lesson and a tribute to the courage of those who fought for the principles upon which the United States was founded, and is freely open to all.

Greensboro Shops + Boutiques

Four shops in downtown Greensboro

Should you catch the shopping bug while in Greensboro, there are a number of shops and boutiques ready with the remedy. Just Be carries a multitude of local souvenirs and gifts, from t-shirts to decor. Vintage shopping seems to be big business in Greensboro, and you could easily spend hours browsing the racks at Design Archives Emporium and Vintage To Vogue Boutique . Fellow crafters will appreciate  Gate City Yarns , where attendees of their weekly craft night were having such a ball that I nearly abandoned my evening plans to grab my car knitting and hang out in the shop. Are video games more your thing? Lost Ark Video Games carries an astounding array of games and hard-to-find paraphernalia. But if you prefer to spend your time reading, a visit to Scuppernong Books is a must!

What about jeans ? Despite the closure of Cone Denim’s White Oak Mill in 2018, denim is still big business in Greensboro. For classic fits, check out the Lee | Wrangler Hometown Studio , or for modern selvedge denim, stop into Hudson’s Hill .

WHERE TO EAT + DRINK IN GREENSBORO

Chez genèse.

The entrance to Chez Genèse

Chez Genèse is the perfect way to begin your day in Greensboro. Open daily from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., this charming cafe brings a touch of French elegance and flavor to the streets of downtown Greensboro with a whole lot of heart. With a mission to employ and empower people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, Chez Genèse is actively working to foster a stronger sense of community in Greensboro, for everyone. And while that impact alone is enough reason to visit and support, the food is also outstanding. The quality of the ingredients and the care that goes into executing each dish are impossible to miss, from a perfectly crafted croque monsieur (shown here) to the delicate crepes constantly parading their way out of the kitchen. Arrive early, or expect a bit of a wait to be seated (it’ll be worth it!).

Two images at MACHETE: one of the dining room and one of the bar

A meal at Greensboro’s MACHETE takes all of your preconceived notions about fine dining and flips them on their head. What began as an in-home supper club is now a James Beard Award nominee, pushing the boundaries of a modern shared small plates menu. Said menu is ever evolving with the seasons, but during our meal featured a bounty of summer produce at its peak (tomato tart, corn ribs, watermelon… my apologies if you’re reading this in the middle of winter!). MACHETE also has one of the best-stocked bars I’ve seen in North Carolina (given our stringent liquor laws, it’s quite a feat), and the cocktail program is just as excellent as the food. Allow ample time for your meal; this is the main event of your night, after all. Reservations are essential, and sharing is a must.

Scrambled Southern Diner

Exterior of Scrambled Southern Diner

Sure, most large cities have at least some sort of diner culture, but in my opinion, nothing compares to a diner in the South. You’ve got biscuits. You’ve got pimento cheese. You’ve got the very best sausage. You’ve got potatoes in many forms. You maybe, maybe have a fruit cup, but it’s not necessary. Greensboro’s Scrambled Southern Diner bills itself as an eclectic Southern diner, which means it has all those things and more. Weekend brunch is a bit of an event here, with a line that breeds inevitable conversations with strangers. Once you make it to your seat, the world is really your oyster, because all your favorites are here. Stuck and in need of a recommendation? I’d say build your own biscuit sandwich, and Michael would insist that you wait until after 11 a.m. to visit so you can order the Burgatory. Arrive early, and for faster seating, add yourself to the waitlist in advance.

Parkside Pull-Up

People wait in line at Parkside Pull-Up

Lunching on a budget? Parkside Pull-Up is your spot! This casual walk-up spot transforms a portion of LeBauer Park into a social dining experience where neighbors, families, and friends can gather to enjoy classic fare like hot dogs, burgers, shakes, and more. And despite a meat-heavy menu, plant-based friends aren’t left out here, either – Parkside Pull-Up’s menu includes tasty vegan dogs and dairy-free ice cream, too. Pro-tip: pair your meal with a cold beer from Lawn Service next door .

Greensboro Coffee Shops

Interior of Northern Roots and a Flat White

With so many higher education institutions in Greensboro, it’s no surprise the coffee scene is thriving here. I had the chance to visit four during my weekend in the city, and I think each deserves a spot on your itinerary. For the coworking traveler, Northern Roots Coffeehouse is my top pick – it offers ample seating for getting things done, and a large menu of specialty drinks to keep you going.  Awoo Coffee is a newcomer to downtown Greensboro, and while it’s hard not to be charmed by the shop’s mascot, Fyodor , what I enjoyed most is the range of international flavors on the menu . For coffee in an unexpected location, check out Borough Coffee at Double Oaks . Tucked away in a cute B&B in the Westerwood neighborhood, this tiny coffee shop makes a great shakerato for enjoying on the covered porch. Back on Elm Street (essentially the main street of downtown Greensboro), Thrive Coffee Co. is another specialty coffee shop crafting a menu filled with classics and fun concoctions. I skipped over the latte float this time around, and deeply regret it, so be sure to order the special of the week for me, okay?

Greensboro Bars + Breweries

Two images at Natty Greene's Brewing Company

Thirsty? Good . Greensboro is brimming with bars and breweries ready to quench your thirst. The city may not quite have as many breweries as Charlotte , but there’s certainly no shortage here. Natty Greene’s Brewing Company is the cornerstone of downtown Greensboro’s craft beer scene, serving locals since 2004. In addition to thirteen taps of local beer, you’ll find a menu full of the region’s favorite foods. Just down the street is one of the city’s newest breweries, Hidden Gate Brewing Company , whose mission is to recreate Old World styles as well as modern American styles for today’s beer drinkers. Order a flight for a mix of both!

If atmosphere is your driving motivation for hanging in a bar, you’ll certainly enjoy Neighbors . This bar is bartender-owned and operated, serving up unpretentious cocktails and barbecue in killer digs. My pick? The Pornstar Martini, which comes with a sidecar of Champagne. For those in more of a competitive mood, there’s always Boxcar Bar + Arcade . This arcade bar has a stellar game lineup and is clearly the place to see and be seen on a weekend evening for area twenty- and thirty-somethings. Oh – no need to bring cash, the token machines take credit cards!

WHERE TO STAY IN GREENSBORO

The biltmore greensboro hotel.

Exterior of the Biltmore Greensboro, and Alyssa in front

Sure, you could book a familiar chain hotel for your stay in Greensboro, but why not stay somewhere truly local? The Biltmore Greensboro Hotel is downtown’s sole independent boutique hotel, and it has a unique history. Built in 1903, the structure has lived a series of lives, from an office building to a post office annex to apartments to today’s 26-room hotel. It even houses the city’s first electric unmanned elevator , which guests still utilize today.

The rooms are comfortable and the charming decor suits the building’s place in history, but what stands out to me the most after my visit is the commitment to warm and gracious service. From the moment you enter the lobby, it feels a bit like visiting a childhood friend at their family home, pleasant and familiar (the hotel staff’s reputation precedes them – the first thing everyone said after mentioning where we were staying is how friendly the staff is!). This feeling continues through the evening’s complimentary wine reception, where guests can relax in the lobby over a glass of local wine and a curated cheese plate.

Of course, that’s not the only amenity – The Biltmore Greensboro Hotel also offers complimentary continental breakfast, no pet fees (next time we’ll bring Meow !), free parking, in-room mini-fridge, coffee and tea, access to the Kathleen Price Bryan Family YMCA and on-site exercise equipment , guest library, and more .

With so much to offer guests and the perfect location for exploring downtown Greensboro, The Biltmore Greensboro Hotel is the perfect choice for first-time visitors. Don’t miss this central refuge with genuine Southern hospitality.

As for rumors that the hotel is haunted, well, The Biltmore Greensboro Hotel makes this claim on its website (I’ll let you decide whether you want to read between the lines!): “The hotel does not advertise or make any claim to any kind ‘ghost’ or ‘paranormal’ activity at the property. It is the opinion of ownership that these are nothing more than just stories that have been passed down. ‘Ghosts’ are a matter of opinion and belief, and not one that every guest shares…”

WITH MORE TIME IN GREENSBORO

Exterior of The International Civil Rights Center & Museum

If you’re new around here, I like to keep a running tally of additional places I’d like to visit next time I’m in the area – we can’t always conquer everything in a weekend, you know! With more time in Greensboro, I’m eyeing these additional spots:

More things to do in Greensboro

  • Weatherspoon Art Museum | A free art museum on the campus of UNCG
  • Greensboro Science Center | A zoo, aquarium, and science center all in one
  • The International Civil Rights Center & Museum | The location of the history-making sit-ins is now a museum dedicated to honoring the history and legacy of the civil rights struggle for equality, justice, and human rights
  • Carolina Theatre | Greensboro’s original performing arts center features concerts, films, and plays
  • Elsewhere Museum | A living museum and artist residency in downtown Greensboro (closed during our visit but has since reopened!)

More places to eat + drink in Greensboro

  • Stephanie’s Restaurant | President Obama-approved soul food
  • ‘cille & ‘scoe | Fresh and local fare
  • Bandito Bodega | Multi-continental fusion
  • Print Works Bistro | Dishes inspired by a French bistro
  • Blue Denim | Cajun and Creole in the heart of NC
  • The Bearded Goat | A “classy dive bar”
  • The Borough Market + Bar | A bar and shop in one cute package

As always, if you make it to any of these spots before we do, be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think!

GREENSBORO TRAVEL TIPS

A collage of photos of the Hopper Trolley

Greensboro, North Carolina, is easily accessible from most of the Southeastern U.S. by car and rail , and by air from other destinations along the Eastern seaboard (travelers flying from further afield may consider flying into Charlotte or Raleigh and making the short drive in). Once in Greensboro, you can easily spend an entire weekend exploring downtown without a car** thanks to the city’s new fare-free Hopper Trolley . This trolley ambles down Elm Street and nearby avenues every seven minutes, making it a useful tool for navigating the city core.

Michael and I opted to use the trolley during the heat of the day, which reached 95°F during our July visit. Greensboro’s climate is similar to that of other cities in the Southeast, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Weather-wise, given the choice of when to visit, I’d recommend booking your Greensboro trip for April to early June or late August to October, when the days are more comfortable. If not? Well, just pack accordingly .

No matter the temperature, downtown Greensboro is lively at night, partly thanks to the BORO initiative. This social district designation allows residents and visitors to purchase an alcoholic beverage at participating establishments and explore within the boundaries of the district (check out the full restrictions here ). Though I’ve heard some reservations from locals in the past about such districts, I can say we didn’t encounter any issues during our visit. In fact, it’s nice to see people out enjoying the local businesses of their city!

FINAL THOUGHTS ON VISITING GREENSBORO

Alyssa stands on a corner in Greensboro

If someone plopped you in the middle of Greensboro’s walkable Elm Street filled with local businesses, you might not realize how large the city is (friendly reminder: it’s the third largest city in the state!). But despite having more than a weekend’s worth of activities, it’s still an excellent choice for a quick getaway. A compact downtown studded with unique local businesses, world-class food and drink, and one-of-a-kind cultural activities… what more could you ask for?

In fact, its wealth of courts has earned it the unofficial title of Tournament Town.

Of course, there’s more to the city than just sports.

A wealth of history has created many different places to visit, so you’re spoiled with choices for what to see, do, and experience.

Artistic venues, lush green spaces, live performances, and historical sites have made this locale a burgeoning tourist hotspot.

Mostly, they document the life and times of locals and individuals who played significant roles in the city’s development, ranging from the Native Americans to the Quakers and even the Scots-Irish!

6. Elsewhere Collaborative

Elsewhere Collaborative

Elsewhere Collaborative

There’s no doubt about the fact that the Elsewhere Collaborative is one of the most fun things to do in Greensboro, NC.

A non-profit museum, the Elsewhere Collaborative was founded in 2005.

It was based on the memory and items collected by a woman named Sylvia Gray, whose many curiosities, materials, and trinkets were accumulated from 1939 to 1997 when she ran a thrift store.

Sylvia, along with her husband, purchased a facility spanning three stores to house and sell their wares.

Sylvia passed away in 1997, leaving behind the store.

The shop was packed with all sorts of objects, chaotically strewn about and piled high.

Her grandson, George Scheer, an artist from Greensboro, decided that he could organize the items and display them in his grandmother’s memory.

In doing so, he created an arts organization designed to find inspiration in these left-behind objects.

That thrift store building now serves as the home for the Elsewhere Collaborative in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.

Artists who use the building now call themselves the Elsewherians!

The museum of the Elsewhere Collaborative has no items for sale.

However, artists are able to gain residencies at the collaborative in order to alter and work with the left-behind items that form Elsewhere’s permanent collection.

It’s often called a “thinking playground” and has opened its doors as a nonprofit group to visitors from Thursdays to Saturdays.

You’ll find over 600 works here, including a huge clothing installation, disassembled musical instruments, and more!

25. The Carolina Theater

The Carolina Theater

The Carolina Theater has a long history, dating back to 1927 when it was built for Saenger-Publix and opened on Halloween of that year.

In its day, it was the state’s biggest and one of its most expensive theaters, boasting 2,200 seats and a budget of more than US$500,000.

1,300 seats were available on the orchestral floor, with the remaining 900 being on the balconies.

The theater boasts a stunning Greek Revival exterior and an elegant Italian Renaissance interior.

It is meant to look somewhat like a Greek temple from the outside, with a pediment and Ionic columns and a facade decorated with polychrome terra-cotta.

The inside, on the other hand, is meant to appear regal.

Sandstone walls, marble tiled floors in different colors, dark green Corinthian columns in marble, and a painted ceiling that resembles a night sky add to its luxurious atmosphere.

In its era, the Carolina Theater was a premier spot, with a smoking room, powder room, and plenty of attendants milling about the guests on golden sofas and plush seats.

Today, the Carolina Theater is a far cry from its old self.

However, as a part of the National Register of Historic Places, it’s still one of the most stunning Greensboro attractions.

It fell into disrepair when it was given up by Saenger, but the United Arts Council of Greensboro managed to snag it and refurbish it as well as possible.

You can now watch modern movies on a large silver screen, enjoy live entertainment on stage, and bask in the opulence of its architecture.

Check out what’s playing tonight for an evening well-spent!

15 Best Things to Do in Greensboro (NC)

Greensboro is a town steeped in history. Once the contact point of the British and Revolutionary armies during the American push for independence in the late 18th century, the city’s outer districts are still marked with battlefields and monuments to the fallen.

When the Civil War erupted, the area was divided, half Dixie half Unionist, later becoming the final spot where the Confederate government met in the last days of the conflict.

Subsequent decades brought railroad wealth and industrial boom, with the powerhouse of the Piedmont Triad fuelling urban growth and prosperity that did well even in the face of the Great Depression.

Today, Greensboro is a city firmly on the up, emerging as a town with quirky art galleries, interesting museums and more than its fair share of pretty urban parks.

Add to that one of America’s most acclaimed water parks, throw in a mouth-watering medley of taco joints and coffee shops, and a lively university population, and it’s easy to see why the onetime Gate City is now a real magnet for travelers making their way across the continental United States!

Here are the best things to do in Greensboro !

1. Between the rainforests and the cosmos at the Greensboro Natural Science Center

Greensboro Natural Science Center

Set over four separate sections and awash with more immersive, child-friendly, interactive exhibits than you can shake a preserved prehistoric vertebrae at, the Greensboro Science Center is arguably the finest and most eye-opening institution on the line-up in the city.

Ranging from the museum, with its reptile and rattlesnake exhibits, to the zoo, complete with swinging gibbons and uber-rare lemurs, the collections here are vast and eclectic.

Oh, and don’t miss the adrenaline-pumping shows that take place in the adjoining Time Warner Cable OmniSphere Theater; mind-boggling three-dimensional films that unravel the mysteries of black holes and dinosaurs alike!

2. Seek out Greensboro’s artistic side at Elsewhere living art museum

Elsewhere

Part artists’ collective, part quirky art gallery, part workshop, part educational facility, the Elsewhere living art museum is perhaps the piece de resistance of Greensboro’s new artistic wave.

Inhabiting a former thrift store on Elm Streen in the downtown, the spot offers an eclectic range of exhibitions and shows throughout the year.

The idea is to get the public thinking about reclaimed and recycled materials in a whole new way, and the resident artists here have worked hard to craft a new aesthetic philosophy, using at-hand, often mundane and found objects to create thought-provoking works that tell a story.

Pop in to participate or just to wonder at the great work being done!

3. Sip coffee with the students at Tate Street Coffee House

Coffee

Located just a stone’s throw from Greensboro’s university buildings, amidst the happening streets of College Hill, this hearty and welcoming little coffee shop touts fair trade brews and oodles of homemade cakes and vegan sandwiches.

A popular hit with the students out of the lecture halls of the University of North Carolina, the joint focusses on sourcing Fair Trade, organic and ethical beans from coffee destinations right across the globe.

Oh, and the weekend means jazz nights and wine tasting sessions galore – so be sure to head in early on Saturdays when the bebop’s about to begin!

4. Stroll through the pretty Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden

Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden

When the urban streets get just a little too much and you find yourself in need of some peace, quiet and North Carolinian greenery in Greensboro, be sure to head for the secluded and soothing gardens of the Tanger Family Bicentennial.

The small clutch of grassy lawns and manicured flowerbeds here come criss-crossed by babbling streams, while a shady gazeebo sits hidden below the canopies – a popular spot for local weddings and events.

There’s history too. The park was inaugurated in 1976 to mark the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the United States. Hence the countless bronze statues and plaques peppering the pathways and greenery.

5. Check out the gourmet taco at Crafted – the Art of the Taco

Crafted - the Art of the Taco

Rarely has Mexican cuisine been quite so precise and, well, crafted, as at this enticing little grassroots taco joint on Elm Street in the heart of Greensboro.

With a deference to organic, tasty ingredients, the foods here are packed full of all the fresh and zingy taste-bud-tingling treats of Central America.

There are ‘Taquitos’ with banana dressing and kim chee, queso-topped salads to kick things off, while a medley of unusual tacos brings up the offering of mains, ranging from the curiously Oriental Wayfarer, with its onion relish and Korean marinade, to the smoky brisket of the southern-inspired Fixie. In short, this is one of the top spots in NC to taste authentic, fusion tacos!

6. Entertain the little ones at the Greensboro Children’s Museum

Children’s Museum

Perfect for travelers hitting Greensboro with kids in tow, the city’s children’s museum is a place of quirkiness and curiosity.

The main exhibit is Our Town; a small-scale replica of a US city that comes complete with pizza take-outs and bustling main streets – perfect for a spot of make believe. There are plastic planes to clamber over too, with cockpits and exit slides at the ready, not to mention a replica of a 1930s home inspired by a classic Fisher Park dolls’ house.

What’s more, the museum also boasts its very own gardens, where visitors can come and explore planting, growing and gardening techniques with experts, all whilst learning about the benefits of organic foods and horticulture!

7. Unravel North Carolina’s military history at the Guilford Courthouse

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Sprawled out over more than 200 acres on the northern fringes of Greensboro, the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park draws a whopping 200,000 visitors each year.

The site was consecrated to commemorate the eponymous Battle of Guilford Court House, which marked the start of the campaigns that would later flower into full-blown victory in the American Revolution.

There are statues honouring the revered US general Nathanael Greene, along with regular tours which point out where Continental forces clashed with the formidable Redcoats of Cornwallis’ British divisions.

Pretty and peppered with plane trees, the area is also a great place to jog, stroll and picnic in Greensboro.

8. Get soaked at Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park

Swimming Pool

North Carolina’s outlet of the iconic Wet ‘n Wild name makes its home on the southern fringes of Greensboro city.

Here, it comes complete with soaring waterslides and plunge pools, bubbling Jacuzzi baths and lazy rivers alike.

A fine place to come and escape the sultry temperatures of the Atlantic Southeast’s summer, the sprawling theme park also boasts some of America’s most adrenaline-pumping water slides. Take the appropriately-named Daredevil Drop – requiring sliders to go down head first and backwards – or Dr Von Dark’s Tunnel of Terror, a medley of 360s and spooky turn sections.

There are also oodles of children’s slides, a wave pool and relaxation cabanas for the adults.

9. Go board walking at the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park

Bog Garden at Benjamin Park

Open all year round, this seven-acre haven of greenery offers a taste of the North Carolinian wilds just a stone’s throw from the center of the city.

A winding boardwalk takes visitors deep into the bayou-esque woods, past bubbling bogs and fern-dressed wetlands, all the while the gushing sounds of the park’s manmade waterfall babbling away in the background.

There are groves of wild bamboo to explore, along with beds of blooming roses and meadow flowers, not to mention gnarled tree trunks and the nests of native owls to spy out between the canopies and undergrowth.

There are also oodles of ducks and wild birds flitting between the trees – great for the budding birdwatcher.

10. Enjoy burgers and bottles at Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing

Natty Greene's Pub & Brewing

The second of Greensboro’s two great microbreweries is Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing, which can be found nestled on the lively side of Elm Street right in the heart of the city.

Hearty and welcoming, the spot touts a whopping 12 beers on tap, ranging from the hefty General Stout to a North Carolinian beer of the month that changes regularly.

There are also oodles of IPAs and AIPAs padding out the drinks menu, while it’s burgers and Southern flavours that bring up the food offering.

Expect the likes of barbecue and Cajun buns, next to spicy veggie patties, slow-roasted pork pulls out of Tennessee and more deep-friend chicken wings than you can shake an in-house Guilford Golden Ale at!

11. Get a fix of local history at the Greensboro Historical Museum

Greensboro Historical Museum

Housed in the gorgeous former First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, the city’s historical museum immerses visitors in heritage from the get go – the very building itself was constructed in 1892 in the classic Romanesque Revival style.

Inside and the exhibitions take over, chronicling everything from the earliest years of the Gate City to the days of the American Civil War in North Carolina.

Visitors can delve into reconstructions of how Greensboro looked back in the early 1900s, when its railroads drew monies developers from the east, or seek out the curious miniature rooms of revered interior designer Otto Zenke.

12. Trace the Greensboro Four at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum

International Civil Rights Center & Museum

Housed in the very same spot where the so-called Greensboro Four – David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair and Joseph McNeil – first initiated the routine of sit-ins during the American civil rights movement at the start of the 1960s, this fascinating museum is dedicated to both showcasing the realities of living in a segregated

America and celebrating those who helped to create change across the country. The exhibitions are at once sobering and engaging, containing Ku Klux Klan robes next to bona fide historical documents related to the reforms that legalised black voting in the mid-60s.

In short, it’s a great stop-off for any travelers interested in American history and civil rights.

13. Go shopping at the City Market

Live Music

If you’re lucky enough to be around town on the third Thursday of the month during the summer, then be sure to make a beeline for Greensboro’s City Market.

This lively event erupts on the streets of the happening South End district for one night only, offering a medley of farmer’s stalls and food trucks, artisan crafts and live music, all of which is local to the greater area of the Piedmont Triad that surrounds Greensboro proper.

Visitors can sample BBQ and Tex-Mex, listen to ad hoc jazz shows and see grassroots artists at work. There’s also plenty of scope for mixing and chatting to the local folk of the Gate City – friendly and welcoming one and all!

14. See global artworks at the Ambleside Gallery

Art Gallery

This independently-owned private gallery actually started life in Manchester, England back in the early 80s.

It’s since moved to specialise in showcasing English and European art in America, with its most recent manifestation gracing the sides of the much-loved South Elm Street of central Greensboro.

Currently, the exhibition covers a wide range of mediums and schools, ranging from the humanist realism of Guan Weixing (an artist who’s exclusive to the Ambleside!) to the Romantic and impressionist oil and pastel landscapes of Sarah Watts.

Drop in for regular events, and to see one of the most eclectic collections of art in the Gate City as a whole!

Nestled among the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina lies the quaint town of Mount Airy. At just an hours drive from Greensboro, it makes for a fanastic day trip from the city.

Its reputation for charm is well-deserved, as it is primarily known as the hometown of Andy Griffith and the real-life inspiration for the idyllic neighborhood depicted in his beloved show, Mayberry. As a result, the streets of Mount Airy are brimming with a sense of retro nostalgia, creating a unique atmosphere that can’t be found anywhere else. 7 Reasons Greensboro Is North Carolina’s Next Great Destination

N orth Carolina has low-key climbed the tourism totem pole.

Where North Carolina once straddled the deep South and the mid-Atlantic has deftly taken its combination of mild weather, serene beaches, and adventure-filled mountains and turned itself into the California of the East. Luring young families, snowbirds, college students, and retirees to its lush pine forests and soft rolling hills.

That population has turned places like Raleigh , Asheville , Wilmington, and Durham into legitimate weekend destinations. Cities with character, history, and rich southern food that make for a relaxing getaway most times of year. But in the middle of North Carolina, long-overlooked Greensboro is quietly turning itself into North Carolina’s next great destination — taking its own nature, fascinating history, and creative culture to make a city worth visiting for a lot more than the ACC tournament. Here are seven reasons Greensboro needs to be on your radar.

1. Downtown does it right.

Aerial Drone Downtown Greensboro North Carolina NC Skyline

Photo: Kevin Ruck /Shutterstock

Greensboro has done a masterful job with its main drag, which next year will be anchored by a new performing arts center on one end and a funky neighborhood full of breweries and thrift shops on the other. Elm Street is full of the kind of old brick facades you see in nostalgic black-and-white photos, the buildings now occupied by craft taco shops, a regional theater company , wine bars, and modern southern restaurants.

Downtown Greensboro, NC

Photo: VanderVeen Photographers/Visit Greensboro

On a sunny Saturday I spent the better part of an afternoon participating in Downtown’s annual Sip n’ Stroll event, a sort of bar and restaurant crawl through downtown. I began in City Center Park, a model of public green space where the Korean Festival had taken over the bandshell. There I had a glass of wine at Café Europa in the adjacent LeBauer Park while kids cooled off in a splash pad nearby. We walked from there down Elm, stopping at 1618 , a bistro-wine bar, and Stumble Stilskins , a Boston-style Irish dive. The journey ended at a pair of breweries near the railroad tracks — Little Brother and Natty Greene’s.

Surrounding Downtown is the Greenway, a four-mile loop of biking and hiking trails that’s the perfect way to get the lay of the land. It’s ideal for a morning run to get a sense of all you’ll want to see later.

2. The history is fascinating.

FW Woolworth CO building in Greensboro

Greensboro is the birthplace of Vicks Vap-o rub, a fun fact you’ll learn on one of the many historic plaques running through downtown. But the history here runs much deeper than medicinal pastes. Greensboro is also the home of the Woolworth’s Lunch Counter, where four black students began the lunch counter sit-in movement in 1960. The counter is still there, but the Woolworth’s that housed it is now the International Civil Rights Museum , one of the most unique exhibits on the American black experience.

The museum is not a simple collection of artifacts but an uncomfortably designed space where you’re guided by a poet or other artist who explains — in powerful language — how the United States has treated people of color. Through graphic photos of lynchings, purposefully cramped spaces made to simulate “colored only” areas of the Jim Crow era, and numerous short films, the museum is as much a message as it is an education.

Its centerpiece is the old lunch counter, which stands just as it did in 1960, minus a few stools that have been shipped off to the Smithsonian. The museum also doesn’t allow photos, as it’s meant for quiet reflection, not Instagramming.

3. Outdoor recreation is accessible to all.

Though the mountains near Asheville and the beaches on the coast get much of the Carolina outdoor hype, sparsely populated Greensboro has a magnificent system of hiking and biking trails that make it an outdoor destination anyone can enjoy. That’s because the trails are, for the most part, easy. So even if you’re not usually an active vacationer, you can get lost (figuratively) among towering Magnolia and pine trees, with nothing but the sounds of birds and the lapping of water accompanying your morning stroll.

The bulk of the trails are based around a watershed maybe 15 minutes from downtown. Trails surround the lake where you’ll find water peeking out from behind the trees as you meander its soft elevation gains. The city of only about 300,000 doesn’t jam the trails either, as on a seven-mile hike through the Nat Greene trail one Saturday I encountered maybe a dozen other people.

Guy kayaking in Greensboro

Again, the hiking here is easy, so it’s not a destination for the hard-core outdoors folks. But the flat, peaceful trails create an environment ideal for even those who don’t exercise much. In addition to the trails, the watershed area has numerous boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals if you’d rather enjoy the Carolina sun from the lake.

4. Greensboro has seasons, but it’s never too cold.

The great outdoors isn’t seasonal either. While I was fortunate enough to visit in mid-April, with cool mornings, sunny afternoons, and pleasant, chilly evenings, Greensboro rarely gets too cold or too hot. December and January bottom out with highs in the low 50s. Not exactly tanning weather but cool enough to let you know summer is gone.

Summer can get a little humid, like most of the South, but under the shade of the thick trees or out on the water you barely notice temps in the upper 80s. It’s the kind of mild climate that draws throngs of people from the Northeast tired of the cold and Floridians sick of brutal summers and hurricanes. It also means you can plan a trip here and never worry about getting rained out.

5. Greensboro does way more than just Southern food.

Soft shell carnitas tacos

Photo: Crafted

Every, and I do mean every, small-to-midsize city in America seems to tout its up-and-coming food scene. Greensboro is no exception, and like many cities its size, you’ll find enough first-class restaurants to fill a long weekend.

Chef Kris Fuller, who with her short hair, tattoos, and gauges in her ears looks like she just stepped off the set of Chopped , has food worthy of the show too. Her series of Crafted restaurants are the approachable best bet for trying something different in Greensboro. Hit the downtown Art of the Taco for southern-inspired tacos filled with stuff like pulled pork and mac and cheese.

Blue Denim — so named after Greensboro’s history as the home of Lee and Wrangler Jeans — is probably the culinary star of the city, offering Cajun specialties like crawfish beignets and shrimp and oyster po’ boys.

On Elm Street I had the best falafel I’ve tasted outside Israel at Jerusalem Market , a family-run fast-casual spot with a sunny back patio.

Venture into the Lindley Park neighborhood and get possibly the best pizza in the state at Sticks and Stones . The brick-oven pizzeria serves cold local beers on an outdoor patio. Slinging pies topped with local ingredients like the Sweet Carolina with Cane Creek farm sausage, wood-roasted chiles, and local spinach.

6. You’ll find creative hotels, restaurants, and bars where you’d usually see chains.

1618 Midtown

Photo: 1618 Midtown /Facebook

Greensboro has a lovely historic downtown, but unlike a lot of newer cities, it also hides a lot of its gems in strip malls and nondescript office parks. I realized this when looking for late-night dining (one area where Greensboro still lacks) and happening upon 1618 Midtown , tucked into a nondescript shopping strip near a Walgreens. I sat at the bar and began chatting with the bearded bartender while waiting for a chorizo rice bowl and truffle fries. His name was Max Barwick, and he was the sort of bartender who sees you looking at a menu, asks what you like, then makes something completely off the menu.

“That guy won a huge international competition in New Orleans,” a slightly tipsy regular at the bar next to me said. “He’s a big deal.”

Barwick returned with a mezcal-jalapeño-lime concoction that tasted like he’d read my mind. I asked him about the award and he humbly told me he’d won the Cocktail Classique in New Orleans in 2018 with a drink called Bitter, Party of One.

“Everyone else there was from Brooklyn,” he said.

Proximity Hotel

Photo: Proximity Hotel /Facebook

Not far away I found myself wandering through an office park and finding a towering, modern-gothic building standing up through the night fog. It was the Proximity Hotel , a boutique property that looks like an old converted bank, set among the kind of places banks now call home. It is far-and-away the most unique modern hotel in the city, with all the boutique staples like subway tiles in the bathroom, luxury bath products, vintage furniture, and high-tech gym equipment.

It’s also home to Print Works Bistro . It felt like more of a destination restaurant than a spot stuck in a suburban hotel, with gourmet flatbreads and tuna tartare leading into a menu full of stuff like lemon garlic shrimp risotto and bacon-wrapped meatloaf. It’s an example of how Greensboro has put emphasis on areas many cities neglect.

7. People haven’t discovered it… yet.
