Your guide to Venice

Where do locals go in venice.

In Venice, each district is called a sestiere, split into six areas. The city has been organized this way since the 12th century, and today looks mostly the same as it did in the 1700s. Piazza San Marco is the most recognizable quarter with easy access to the Grand Canal, but hop in a gondola and you can arrive in areas where true Venetians eat, drink, and shop. Here’s a quick guide to get you started.

This is where many locals live. It shares the same side of the Grand Canal as San Marco, and it is where you can explore the beautiful synagogues and Jewish Museum of Venice in the Venice Ghetto. Take guided tours to learn more of the area’s cultural history with a local historian.

This is the largest of the sestieri, and where you’ll find the Peggy Guggenheim and Accademia museums along with lively squares including Campo Santa Margherita. Find low-key restaurants, a gondola boatyard, and other sights on a walking tour to secret art spots.

Situated just east of Piazza San Marco, expect to find less crowds as you duck into a bacari (bar) for a glass of Prosecco and light tapas, which is called cicchetti here.

Where do locals eat?

Each sestiere has its own personality when it comes to dining, but no matter where you are, you can fulfill cravings for an Italian coffee or pastry from a pasticceria. One common place locals love is the Rialto Market. Here, you can watch fishmongers toss fresh seafood in the air, or shop for fresh ingredients on your way to a cooking class. Street food is a popular choice here, and a local-led food tour could help in the decision-making process.

What are the best day trips from Venice?

A day trip to the Prosecco region is a relaxing way to get out of the action and into the hills for bubbles in a vineyard and a meal at a local osteria. Most day trips can take about eight hours, and a private tour ensures round-trip transportation.

CANAL VIEW San Marco

This charming studio in the Cannaregio district is a real home away from home, and it’s not short on facilities either.

Along with a laptop-friendly workspace and a washing machine, you have access to a fully equipped kitchen and a direct view right of the canal.

A Quiet Single Room by Piazzale Roma | Perfect Venice Airbnb for Solo Travellers

A Quiet Single Room by Piazzale Roma

When travelling solo, people will often tell you to head for the nearest Venice hostel . However, we understand that’s not what everyone wants — especially when you can have your own space over a smelly and noisy dorm!

This single private room is near both Piazzale Roma and the Santa Lucia train station, but the convenient location isn’t the only great thing here. The city tourist tax is included in the price, which is a bonus for travellers in the floating city. You also provided basic toiletries in this charming Venice apartment as well as access to a private courtyard.

If you have a full Venice itinerary planned, this stunning apartment is the place to be!

A Quiet Room in a Great Location | Perfect Short-Term Airbnb in Venice for Digital Nomads

Quiet room in great location, Venice

When travelling whilst working, there are a few things that you need to make your life a bit easier. A laptop-friendly workspace and Wi-Fi are absolute necessities. Having air conditioning in your private room is also perfect for keeping you cool if things get a bit stressful!

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Here are a few more of my favorite Airbnbs in Venice!

Apartment with Stunning Canal Views

Airbnb in Venice

Venice is renowned for many things, but nightlife isn’t one of them. In fact, the lagoon is so expensive that most locals head back on the last boats to the mainland. However, there are a few cool bars and restaurants in the Dorsoduro area, so if you want a taste of some nightlife, it’s a good idea to base yourself in that area.

This awesome Venice Airbnb houses up to 2 guests and is located on the second floor. You’ve got the entire rental unit to yourself with this newly renovated and spacious apartment. You’ll have one of the biggest canals right in front of your doorstep, offering stunning views. It’s one of the best places in Venice to cure your hangover, especially with the air conditioning!

Suite Tower Rialto

Suite Tower Rialto, Venice

If you’re travelling to Venice with your other half, then you’re spoiled for places to stay. It’s one of the most romantic cities in the world, after all! Then, you start noticing the prices … and the list gets a lot smaller. Thankfully, not all Venice Airbnbs will break the bank. The Suite Tower Rialto is perfect for budget-conscious backpackers looking for an entire apartment together.

There’s a functional kitchen/living space where you can make your morning coffees in the Nespresso machine before heading out to explore the town from this location in Central Venice! You’re right on the Grand Canal, and you’ve got this entire rental unit to yourselves.

Antique Attic Bedroom in Cannaregio

Attic bedroom in Venice Cannaregio, Venice

If you’re looking to keep your costs down and get an authentic experience of a destination, there is nothing better than staying with a local. So, check out this homestay in Venice to get to know the city and have plenty of cash left over for the next leg of your Italian trip!

This bright attic bedroom in an exclusive Venetian palazzo is a gorgeous place to wake up in, with exposed wooden beams and a gorgeous skylight! You’re right around the corner from the Grand Canal in this beautiful private room.

Venezia … Esageratamente Venezia!

Venezia... esageratamente Venezia!

St Mark’s Square is home to some of the coolest attractions in Venice — the Doge’s Palace, the landmark tower, and some of the best (but most expensive) places to eat and drink in town. You’d think that an apartment in the city’s top tourist area would break the bank, but that’s not the case! At this Venice Airbnb, you’ll not only be pleasantly surprised by the price but you’ll also be able to take advantage of the fully equipped kitchen, which is invaluable here!

Ca’ Zulian Palace – Grand Canal | Amazing Luxury Airbnb in Venice

Ca’ Zulian Palace – Grand Canal

We’ve already spoken a lot about how expensive the floating city can be. However, if you’ve got the money, you can be somewhere truly special like this entire apartment. This Venice Airbnb has one of the largest private terraces in the whole of Venice — and it’s all yours — just imagine sipping a Prosecco out there with that view of the boats passing by!

If you’d rather chill inside, you’ve got your own library and a breakfast corner. This is one of the best Airbnbs in Venice, Italy, if you want panoramic photos from the comfort of your own home! This entire rental unit has air conditioning and is set right on the Grand Canal.

Beautiful Loft with a View

Amazing San Marco apartment & view, Venice

If you’re looking to stay near St Mark’s Square, here’s another excellent option. Just a minute from the piazza itself, this loft is perfect for a couple or a digital nomad. A romantic Venice apartment that is full of character, you’ve also got fast unlimited Wi-Fi. And that’s not all! Complimentary tea and coffee are included too — if you’re checking out but have a late flight or train out of Venice, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a luggage room where you can store your bags!

Historic Residence near La Fenice

Historic Residence near La Fenice, Venice

There are loads of great homestays in Venice, so we wanted to give you as many alternatives as possible! If the previous option was a little too pricey, check out this historic residence right in the heart of Venice, close to St Mark’s Square.

The house is shared by three young artists who will only be too happy to give you their recommendations on the best places to visit in town. It’s a great place to stay if you’re hoping to take in an opera performance — this flat is just a stone’s throw from the iconic La Fenice Theatre!

Elegant House in the Heart of Venice

Historic House in heart of Venice, Venice

Looking for somewhere to stay with the family? Check out this short-term rental in Venice — it’s perfectly set up for families of any age! If you’re travelling with younger kids, you’ll be pleased to know that there are toys and games which you’re welcome to use, while cots and cribs make it easier to get young ones to sleep. Features like the rooftop terrace, a fully equipped kitchen, and spacious living room mean that it’s a great place for the whole family to spend some quality time together.

Ca’ dei Zoti 1, San Marco

Ca' dei Zoti 1, San Marco

When staying with friends, it’s important to have a place where you can chill out together and make the most of each other’s company. If that’s the case, this beautifully restored Venice Airbnb is a no-brainer! With room for 6 guests, and access to a kitchen, the entire gang can enjoy cooking and eating together. You’re also just a stone’s throw from Campo Santo Stefano, Accademia Bridge and San Mark’s Square, as well as shops and boutiques.

Cannaregio Romantic Mini Suite | Top-Value Airbnb in Cannaregio

Cannaregio Romantic Mini Suite

We’ve already shown you a few Airbnbs in Venice’s Cannaregio district, and that’s because it’s one of the hippest areas in town! Thanks to it being a little distance away from the main tourist areas, it also offers some of the best prices in town! This romantic mini-suite is a delightful option for a couple, with wooden beams, a comfy double bed, and plenty of privacy! There are many traditional Venetian restaurants and bars in the immediate vicinity — a great chance to sample the local cuisine.

Here’s what people usually ask us when they look for vacation rentals and homes in Venice.

Venice isn’t the cheapest destination, but Airbnb has your back. Cheaper rooms cost around $30 per night on average, luxury rooms will set you back up to $200 per night .

Are Airbnbs better than hotels in Venice?

Hotels in Venice can definitely lean on the expensive side, especially in prime areas such as San Marco and San Croce. Thankfully, Venice has a wide range of Airbnbs to choose from! A cosy apartment or a studio is a much more reasonable option than a hotel, especially with added amenities like kitchen access, which will further help you cut costs!

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for an Airbnb stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Earplugs

Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.

Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.

Grayl GeoPress Water Filter and Purifier Bottle

Don’t Forget Your Venice Travel Insurance

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

It’s the ideal combination of style and great value for money. Although it’s not right in the centre of the attractions, it’s still well-positioned for exploring Venice on foot or by boat!

So, now that you’ve got a better idea of how to make the most of your Venetian vacation, it’s time for us to leave you to enjoy it. We hope you have an incredible time!

The 17 BEST Airbnbs in Venice For The Ultimate Italian Getaway

Planning a trip to Italy and searching for the best Airbnbs in Venice? Well, look no further, because I’ve put together the ultimate Airbnb Venice guide for the ultimate Italian vacation experience! Whether you’re looking for a cheap apartment, luxury getaway, or unique family loft – I’ve got you covered!

Venice. City of Canals. The Floating City. City of Masks. City of Bridges. Queen of the Adriatic. City of Water.

Airbnbs in Venice

So many nicknames over the years, but the only way to truly sum up Venice is to see it for yourself. Nothing else will do it the justice it deserves.

This world-famous northern Italian city is made up of over 100 islands floating in an enormous lagoon. This ancient city dates back over 1000 years, and walking its quaint laneways is like stepping back through time. Canals weave their way alongside ancient churches and palaces, brimming with gondolas and vaporettos ferrying visitors back and forth.

Spring or summer is absolutely the best time to visit Venice, unless you’re eager to visit Carnival in February. Intense flooding during the colder months is common and you won’t get the same famous Italian light that you would in the summer months. It can also smell pretty bad from time to time, which is expected. After all, experts state the city is sinking at a rate of 1-2mm per year, and could be completely underwater by 2100. That should be enough for you to pack your bags, book your ticket and head to Venezia!

My list of the 17 best Venice AirBNB stays covers all areas of the main island, as well as some of its famous outer islands as well. I’ve even put together a guide to Venice’s main areas, to make choosing your stay super easy and enjoyable!

Romantic Airbnbs in Venice

Where to Stay in Venice | Best Areas & Places To Stay

Venice can get kind of confusing. It is separated into six different zones ( sestieri ) that have been part of the city since its early beginnings. Each zone has its own vibe and its own unique character. Don’t worry, I’ve put together a quick breakdown below of the main zones in Venice. This will make choosing your dream AirBNB from my list so much easier!

  • San Marco: This is the tourist hub of Venice – the heart of the city and home to its world famous landmarks. If you want to be staying right near St Mark’s Square, The Doge’s Palace, The Grand Canal, The Bridge of Sighs and some of the best galleries and museums in Italy, San Marco is where you want to be.
  • San Polo and Santa Croce: Home of the iconic Rialto Bridge, this zone is comprised of two areas, but San Polo is where most of the action is. The area is peppered with little stalls, shops and standing bars ( Bacari). There are also many major churches here, and the largest public square in the city behind St Mark’s – Campo San Polo.
  • Murano, Burano and Torcello: Just afield of the aforementioned “centres” of Venice, this cluster of islands are a glimpse inside a slower-paced, authentic way of life. Murano is world-renowned for its glass manufacturing industry, and here you can see demonstrations, visit museums and buy glass to your heart’s content. Torcello is a quiet island with a charming basilica. Burano is the birthplace of Burano lace, which put it on the map as far back as the 16th century. On this bright and cheery island, you can see lacemaking in progress and visit its lace museum.
  • Dorsoduro: The most southern zone of Venice, Dorsoduro also comprises the island of Giudecca. Stepped in history, this zone was once the chosen area for Italian nobility. Now it is popular for its eclectic atmosphere, with lagoonside walking paths, artistic locals, student lodgings and luxury residences. Venice’s Accademia gallery is in Dorsoduro and the some of the best nightlife in Venice can be found around the Campo Santa Margherita.
  • Castello: Castello is today known as the most authentic part of Venice for true Venetians, where tourism hasn’t changed it dramatically and life is much as it always was. Castello is the largest zone in Venice, and is brimming with churches, museums and is also home to Venice’s ancient Arsenal. Here you can visit the Museum of Naval History and learn about what was once the most powerful fleet in the world.
  • Other Islands: Many quaint, tiny islands fall under what is the sixth and final zone of Venice. These minor islands are still beautiful, unique and arguably the best glimpse inside “real Venice”. These islands include San Servolo, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, San Clemente and Sant’Erasmo.

Venice Canals - Airbnbs in Venice

While these are the six official zones of Venice, you may often see the words “Lido” and “Mestre” thrown around in relation to areas of the city.

The Lido is an 11km long barrier island located in Venice’s lagoon, and is where many permanent residents of Venice live. This is also where the Venice Film Festival takes place each year – so maybe head over there for a spot of celeb spotting if your trip falls during the major event!

Mestre is a borough of greater Venice, and is not located on the actual “island” chain. But many tourists choose to stay in Mestre as the prices are far lower than on the island, and getting there is so easy and so quick with trams and buses running day and night.

Open and airy, the loft has traditional high ceilings and Venetian design elements. This 15th century building also has a cozy balcony with views to a picturesque canal. This affordable apartment is located in the down to earth Cannaregio district, with its many meandering canals and authentic Venetian vibe. Reaching the central landmarks of Venice is easy and straightforward.

Guest review : “As others have said the photos don’t do this amazing place justice. The beauty and design elements perfectly blended made our stay all the more magical in Venice. The location is ideal, close to the train station (only 3 bridges – then the one to the apartment) but an easy walk to all the other major areas. We loved having a drink on the balcony and watching the boats go by. The kitchen is a dream and the whole apartment is generous in size beyond belief. There are even a couple of English stations available on tv. It is all the little touches like the coffee machine with pods, fresh croissants that are delivered each morning and the suggestions of great places to see & eat at that make this palazzo perfect.” – Tracy

It’s always a problem when you are doing a tour to pitch what to show your party and what to say to them given that some of the group will know absolutely nothing about where you’re visiting and others may be totally clued up and need detail they wouldn’t otherwise get. Mirko hit the balance perfectly and gave us a great overview of the Doge’s Palace. I thoroughly recommend this tour. It whetted our appetite to come back and take a more detailed look at the pictures in particular. Well done Mirko.” – Stuart, United Kingdom

Airbnb in Venice

airbnb tours venice

With its twisting canals and bobbing gondolas, its Renaissance church domes and coffee-clinking piazzas by the Adriatic, Venice reigns as one of the most iconic cityscapes on the planet. It’s amazing, but not just because it’s built on water! A onetime trading empire that spread to China and India found its epicentre here, which explains the sheer grandeur of the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Square. Italian artistic movements flourished in the workshops, too – a hop to glass-mad Murano or the acclaimed Galleria dell’Accademia should be enough to show that. In addition, honeymooners and sightseers are beguiled by Venetian street life and culture, whether they’re walking the Rialto or whizzing down the Grand Canal.

If you’re keen to join them, you might want to consider bagging yourself an Airbnb in Venice. They offer something a little different to a conventional hotel, in the form of self-catering apartments or private rooms in managed properties. There are some corkers on the menu amid the canals, and this guide can help you home in on the top districts and even some individual rentals that could be perfect for you…

In this Airbnb guide to Venice :

Is Airbnb legal in Venice?

Where should i stay in venice airbnb, santa croce, best airbnbs in venice, best airbnb apartment in venice, best airbnb house in venice, best airbnb for families in venice, best airbnb for large groups in venice, best airbnb for romantic stays in venice, is airbnb cheaper than hotels in venice.

Is Airbnb legal in Venice?

Venice has seen a huge explosion of Airbnb listings since the service first arrived in the city in the early noughties. It’s raised a lot of concern among locals about increasing rent prices and gentrification, so there are now tighter restrictions when it comes to registering new short-term lets in the City of Canals. For travelers, the service continues to run totally as normal. It’s perfectly legal and could even be your ticket to some of the very best self-catering flats and private rooms in town. Just know that all guests are usually asked to pay a small tourist tax and present their ID or passport upon arrival.

Venice is one of the more complex Italian cities to find your way around. Why? Well, it’s set on an archipelago of islands out in the Adriatic Sea – that’s why! The main area you’ll want to have on the radar in surely San Marco (1) . It’s the heart of town and the home of the main piazza. From there, going north opens the atmospheric Cannaregio (2) or even the market-filled streets of San Polo (3) . Going south across the wide waterways offers the relatively sleepy Dorsoduro (4) and even-sleepier Giudecca (5) . For good links to the mainland and the train station, you could consider a stay in Santa Croce (6) . For a real escape and some authentic Venetian arts and crafts, it’s got to be Murano (7) .

San Marco

  • Home to Venice’s most amazing sights
  • People watching on St Mark’s Square
  • Rich in history and culture
  • Almost ridiculously expensive
  • Packed with tourists

No visit to Venice could be complete without dipping your toe in the San Marco area. Wedged into a bend on the Grand Canal, it’s the stomping ground of the greatest Venetian attractions of all – St Mark’s Square, the Gothic-Orientalist medley of St Mark’s Basilica, the red-hued campanile tower. You’ll be clicking the camera at every corner and be swamped with medieval and Renaissance-era sights. Immersion in all that does bring some downsides: San Marco is notoriously touristic (especially when the cruise ships are in) and uber-expensive. It’s certainly not the choice if you’re watching the euros.

Cannaregio

  • Interesting Jewish heritage
  • Lively street life
  • Hidden churches and palaces galore
  • A little far from St Mark’s
  • Limited Airbnb options

The most populated neighbourhood over on the Venice Lagoon is the Cannaregio. Historically, this was the Jewish Ghetto, which was only liberated and connected with the greater city in 1797 with the arrival of Napoleon. These days, it’s an atmospheric and mesmerising place, filled with pastel-painted mansions that lean and lurch over each other before wide piazzas that bustle with life and craft markets. Hidden churches like the chapel at Santa Maria di Nazareth and plenty of 16th-century palaces make up the main sights, but it’s really all about enjoying the street scenes and the local cafés.

San Polo

  • Close to the beautiful Rialto Bridge
  • Excellent food markets
  • Good water taxi links all over town
  • Hard to navigate
  • Always very busy

The labyrinth of San Polo is the Venice you might just have been waiting for. Dead-end alleys shoot in directions you don’t know, murky canals bisect the main thoroughfares, age-stained churches crown the piazzas – it’s the sort of area where you can really feel the long, long histories of the city. Perhaps more than anything, San Polo is known for its vegetable, fish and fruit markets, which pop up on the squares near the Rialto Bridge each day. Talking of the Rialto Bridge, you should head there to get the best photo angles of the Grand Canal, or even catch a vaporetti (water taxi) out to other parts of the city.

Dorsoduro

  • Fantastic art galleries
  • Authentic Italian street life
  • Quiet and peaceful
  • The area is big
  • Not many big-name sights

The Dorsoduro is the long south edge of the central Venice archipelago. It’s considered far more local and low-key than San Marco, which is actually just a short walk over the bridge to the north. Culture vultures are sure to be entertained by the presence of institutions like the Gallerie dell’Accademia – by far the best art gallery in the city. Street walkers are rarely unimpressed by the bustle and authentic vibes along Calle Sant’Agnese – a land of Aperitivo joints and classic Italiano cantinas. The other great thing about Dorsoduro is the peace and quiet. A lot of its Airbnbs are tucked into hidden corners and crannies, so you’re more likely to get a long and comfy night’s sleep.

Murano

  • The glass workshops!
  • Nice views of the lagoon
  • It’s far from the centre of Venice
  • No major sights

A fragment of the main Venice archipelago that lies to the north of the most popular parts of the city, Murano is primarily known for its long history of glass making. Travelers still venture here in search of the wares, which are handmade in beautiful vintage workshops all over the town (be warned – it’s expensive). But Murano is also a great place to go for an escape from the hubbub of the Grand Canal. It’s around 20 minutes by ferry from the downtown but a world away in character, sporting relaxed cantinas and wine bars and seafood trattoria next to reflective Adriatic waterways.

Santa Croce

  • Extremely well connected
  • Joins the Grand Canal directly
  • Those ugly cruise ships!
  • The only car traffic in old Venice is here

The main bus terminals, the cruise ship docks, Santa Lucia train station , and the end of the Liberty Bridge that links the city’s islands to the mainland all meet at Santa Croce. That makes this one of the most accessible parts of the archipelago. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the quietest and most authentic. As most visitors instantly hop on the vaporetti to St Mark’s, the streets here are left to local coffee drinkers and dominos players. The areas closer to the Grand Canal’s northern terminus tend to be the liveliest.

Giudecca

  • Very relaxed
  • Lovely, spacious Airbnbs
  • Authentic Venetian character
  • You need to catch a ferry to get to St Mark’s
  • No big-name attractions

Giudecca dashes between the beaches of the Venice Lido and the old churches of Dorsoduro. An island on its own, it enjoys a far slower pace of life than the main heart of the City of Canals. The soaring dome of the Chiesa della Santissimo Redentore keeps watch over it all, but, for the most part, the buildings are stoop and low, fronted with terracotta paint and topped with red tiles. It takes just under 10 minutes on a water taxi to get from Giudecca to the mainstay parts of Venice, but lots of travelers will prefer to hang around and hop the lagoon-side pizzerias and coffee shops.

Modern, different, central

Modern, different, central

You can cosy up in your lounge and watch the gondoliers punt their boats right by the window in this unique canal-side property. It’s compact but filled with charm – think exposed redbrick walls and creaking timber ceilings. Two well-appointed bedrooms are on offer to host up to four guests, each with their own private ensuite.

Venetian Cottage La Casetta

Venetian Cottage “La Casetta”

With a touch of the Adams Family about it, this haunting and old-school mansion sits out in the western corner of the Venice archipelago. That gives it good walking access to some of the most happening nightlife quarters, but also the bars and markets of San Polo. The outside is all weathered stonework strewn with ivy vines. The inside is toned down modernism with whitewashed walls and space for four guests.

Fascinating home on the canal

Fascinating home on the canal

You can spread the family out between three bedrooms in this large apartment on the fringes of San Marco district. The location should make it easy to organise sightseeing outings to St Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace – they are both within walking distance. Inside, a duo of bathrooms and a quaint but cosy lounge make it a top place to retire to with the whole crew.

For family reunions and groups of friends

For family reunions and groups of friends

You’ll have the whole group feeling like rich Venetian merchants if you rent this grand mansion-flat out on the far eastern edge of San Marco. Steeped in history, it channels the medieval and Renaissance feel of the town with painted frescoes, classic furniture and dangling chandeliers. Space is in abundance thanks to six separate bedrooms and a capacity for parties of 16.

Luxury Stay in Venice

Luxury Stay in Venice

Crank up the romance of Venice to all new heights in this Airbnb Luxe apartment. It’s a chance to live like the 1% for a few days, in a pad that opens onto visions of reflective canals and honey-hued palaces that date back centuries. The living room is the perfect place to cosy up together after long bouts of sightseeing, and there’s even an extra bedroom if you wanted to turn it into a double date.

Booking hotels in Venice can be a notoriously pricy process. The establishments that dot areas like San Marco and San Croce are surely up there with the most expensive in Italy – perhaps even the world. Airbnb, on the other hand, can help cut costs. Apartments with multiple bedrooms could come in cheaper than hotels because they let you share the price of a trip with your whole travel group. In addition, there are regularly weekly discounts on offer. Oh, and you can score self-catering facilities to save money on eating out (which is sure to be one of your main outgoings on the side of the canals!).

Hotel Nani Mocenigo Palace

On the flip side, Venice’s hotels have a reputation for luxury and opulence that you might not want to miss out on. Take somewhere like the grand Hotel Nani Mocenigo Palace. It puts you in a centuries-old palazzo amid the famous churches and piazzas of the Dorsoduro area, and comes with frills like dedicated housekeeping, marble-clad bathroom ensuites, and a gorgeous al fresco bar and garden. We can see why you might be tempted!

If you haven’t yet bobbed along the Grand Canal on a gondola or munched gelato on St Mark’s Square, it might be time to get a-searching for Airbnbs in Venice. It’s a city you don’t forget in a hurry! Prepare your best outfits. Brush up the wine-tasting skills. Dust down the art guides. Milan is a city that booms with fashion boutiques, UNESCO sites, and some of Italy’s most celebrated food. You can bag an Airbnb in all sorts of locations across town for a comfy and fun-filled stay. Leaving Venice? Check out our guide How to go from Venice to Florence .

13 Best Airbnbs in Venice, From Tiny Alleyway Apartments to Palazzos

By Julia Buckley

13 Best Airbnbs in Venice From Tiny Alleyway Apartments to Palazzos

It’s easy to see why everyone wants to go to Venice . This floating city, made up of 118 islands stitched together by over 400 bridges, is unlike anywhere else on earth. Here, gondolas float past your window, the main square hovers on the water, and the train station turfs you out onto the Grand Canal. Most people come for two things: Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, where a food market has sat in its shadow since medieval times. But, beautiful as both are, there’s more to Venice than that. This is a city where artisans practice centuries-old trades, where streets expand into quiet campi (squares), and where dozens of churches house world-class works of Renaissance art. Stay longer, and you’ll have time to explore the empty streets and remote islands that make Venice one of the most magical places on the planet.

Alongside a centuries-old hotel scene , there are now thousands of Airbnbs in Venice, from small pied-à-terres to flamboyant apartments in ancient palazzos. Remember that Venice is a fragile city that struggles with overtourism, so make sure you contribute positively during your stay by eating at locally owned restaurants and buying something from those artisans to take home as a memory of your trip of a lifetime. Whether you’re looking for a small apartment near Rialto or a magnificent palazzo, you’ll find something for you in our list of the best Airbnbs in Venice.

We've selected these listings based on Superhost status, ratings, amenities, location, decor, editor stays, and previous guest reviews.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Bird's-eye views of Murano and the north lagoon

The vibe:  Sunny and simple on the waterfront Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities:  The rooftop terrace with sweeping lagoon views Nearby attractions: Fondamente Nove, Murano

Your must-have Venice accessory is an altana—a sunny terrace perched on the roof of the house. The one at this property is particularly special since it gives you a bird’s eye view of the beautiful north lagoon, overlooking Murano, the cemetery island of San Michele, and the Dolomite mountains beyond. You’ll have the same view from the front of the apartment—and you’re right over the popular vaporetto (waterbus) stops of Fondamente Nove for destinations including St. Mark’s Square, Murano, Burano, and the airport and train station. The apartment itself sits in the eaves of a lagoon-front building, with pretty exposed beams, plus light-flooded views over the lagoon and neighboring houses. Note that one of the bedrooms isn’t suitable for tall people, since, pretty as it is, the beams slope down almost to head height.

Ancient-meets-modern in the heart of San Polo

The vibe:  Funky old-meets-new Bed & bath:  2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities:  The traditional water entrance—right from the canal outside the house Nearby attractions: Frari church, Rialto Bridge, San Tomà gondola station

For centuries, Venetian homes have been known for their over-the-top interiors. This one’s no different—except it blends ancient and modern in a thoroughly noisy, fun way. A 10-minute trot from the Rialto Bridge, in the heart of the San Polo district, owner Luigi’s apartment starts with original frescoed walls and Murano glass chandeliers—and then adds bright midcentury furniture, jewel-colored upholstery, and multicolored drapes. A quick hop from the famous Frari church, it even has its own entrance by water.

Boho retreat in elegant Cannaregio

The vibe:  Boho eclecticism Bed & bath: 3 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities: Fireplace, AC, Wi-Fi, library, bar Nearby attractions: Fondamenta degli Ormesini, Jewish Quarter, Madonna dell’Orto church

Residential district Cannaregio is one of the loveliest parts of Venice—on the way into town from the train station, full of elegant palazzos and wide, tranquil canals. This is just off the Fondamenta degli Ormesini—slightly less tranquil, however, since it’s one of the buzziest places at night. A beautifully, boho renovation of a Gothic palazzo, it has rough-painted walls in deep burgundies, sumptuous traditional terrazzo flooring, and beautiful details, from a lamp made by Venetian maestro Mariano Fortuny to elements that recall Morocco, such as painted tiles and wooden screens separating the rooms.

Fashion icon’s home in artsy Dorsoduro

The vibe:  Outré fashionista Bed & bath:  3 bedrooms, 3 baths Top amenities:  Rooftop terrace Nearby attractions: Guggenheim Museum, Accademia, Salute church

This stunning apartment is a cut above your regular Venice style, with florid feature wallpaper, outré furniture that either matches or clashes with the walls, and accessories that make a statement. If it looks like a fashionista’s pied-à-terre, you’d be right—this is the former home of Hubert de Givenchy, founder of the Givenchy fashion house. Outside there’s even a terrace. In the heart of Dorsoduro—Venice’s most artsy neighborhood—this is one where it’s worth the splurge for the Instagram photos alone. There’s also a rooftop patio, with views over the terracotta rooftops of Dorsoduro.

Sunny, quiet home near the train station

The vibe:  Sunny modern retreat Bed & bath:  2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities:  Lots of space for families Nearby attractions: Train station, bus terminal, Fondamenta degli Ormesini

A short walk from the train station and bus terminal, this unusually sunny top-floor retreat overlooks the terracotta rooftops of the Cannaregio neighborhood. From the bright pops of color in lamps, rugs, and furniture to the pretty patterned tiles in the kitchen, Casa Cecilia will brighten your day. There’s an open-plan kitchen-dining room as well as a living room—so there’s space to spread out if you’re traveling as a family.

Fashion-forward stay near Rialto

The vibe:  Bombastic and stylish Bed & bath:  2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities:  Insta-friendly furnishings Nearby attractions: Rialto Bridge and market

The area around Rialto is the most ancient part of the city, but there’s nothing old-style about this beautiful apartment, just steps from the iconic Rialto Bridge and its famous market. Here at Lidia’s place, you’ll find plush, comfy furniture, artworks galore, and striking feature walls—from humbug stripes in the living room to soothing greens in one of the bedrooms. It’s been beautifully put together, and Lidia is a local, who comes to meet you and let you in—it’s the kind of experience that Airbnb does best.

Antique-stuffed apartment in San Polo

The vibe:  Blast from the past Bed & bath:  2 bedrooms, 3 baths Top amenities:  The antiques and artworks Nearby attractions: Frari church, San Polo, Rialto

Venice is a living museum so why not stay in one, too? Laura’s magnificent apartment is stuffed with antiques and artworks, giving you a real taste of how Venetians used to live—in fact, some of the only modern things in the apartment are the owner’s own artworks. In San Polo, near the Frari church and a 15-minute trot from Rialto, this is in one of Venice’s most ancient areas. It’s perfect for families, with a sumptuous carved bed in the main room, and two singles in the other.

Romantic attic over the Grand Canal

The vibe:  Sunny pied-à-terre Bed & bath:  2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities:  Sweeping views of the Grand Canal Nearby attractions: Rialto market, Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal

You’ll have jaw-dropping views of the Grand Canal from this romantic attic apartment near the Rialto market—but those views are paired with a home-from-home feeling, perfect for those who find that Venice’s traditional heavy style can be oppressive. This is a bright, sunny top-floor, with exposed beams crisscrossing the ceiling, and the main bedroom hoisted over the living room on a mezzanine amid the eaves. The second bed is a single tucked behind the living area, and it’s all open plan, so it’s better for families than friends.

Chic retreat in the heart of Venice near San Marco

The vibe:  Modern in the heart of town Bed & bath:  1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities:  Sweeping open plan living-dining area, complete with a fireplace Nearby attractions: La Fenice, Piazza San Marco, Grand Canal

With its rabbit warren of alleyways, the sestiere (district) of San Marco is one of the oldest, and most evocative, parts of the city. This, in a historical palazzo in Campo Sant’Angelo, is in the middle of it all. Despite the ancient location, it’s thoroughly modern, with fun green walls clashing with a mustard-colored chandelier in the main bedroom, and no fewer than two sofas to relax on (one of them is a sofa bed, if you’re traveling as a group). Working remotely? There’s super high speed Wi-Fi.

Elegant canalside apartment near St. Mark’s Square

The vibe:  Sunny and central Bed & bath:  1 bedroom, 3 baths Top amenities:  Whirlpool bath Nearby attractions: Piazza San Marco, La Fenice Opera House

Fling open the windows and you’ll be serenaded by gondoliers gliding along the canal below. Here, you’re right in the heart of the San Marco sestiere—in fact, you’re close to George Clooney’s favorite restaurant, Da Ivo. San Marco apartments tend to be dark, as the alleyways are close together, but this is gloriously sunny, and even brighter thanks to the clean, white interiors. There’s even a whirlpool bath, for when you want to sit back with a glass of wine and hear those gondolier songs drifting through.

Dreamy lagoon views on Giudecca

The vibe:  Waterworld Bed & bath:  1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities:  World-class views of the lagoon Nearby attractions: Giudecca, Lido

On Giudecca, the large island squaring off against Venice ‘proper,’ this is another world. The sun rises over the calm south lagoon, flooding the apartment with light in the morning; rowing boats glide past in the distance; and your views are of the Lido and tiny private islands. In fact, with windows all around the living room, and a terrace cantilevered over the water, you may find it hard to go in for sightseeing. Just as well that it’s brilliantly equipped, with one main bedroom and a sofa bed, to house four people.

Perfect little studio between Rialto and St. Marco

The vibe:  Modern inside, ancient outside Bed & bath:  1 bedroom, 1.5 baths Top amenities:  Views of a canal, complete with gondolas Nearby attractions: Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco

You get the best of both worlds here. Enter through the porticoed courtyard (or even from the canal) and you’ll realize this is a historic 17th-century palazzo; but once you’re in this bright, modern apartment you’d never know. Although it’s small, it’s been beautifully designed, with the main bed slotted into its own nook, and ceiling beams painted white to bring in more light. There are fun views of the courtyard from the living room, and you can also see a canal, with gondolas sweeping by.

airbnb tours venice

Colorful apartment near the train station

The vibe:  Jaunty and perfect for groups Bed & bath:  3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths Top amenities:  A rare-for-Venice garden Nearby attractions: Train station, bus terminal, Frari church

From its famous artworks to its multicolored house facades, Venice is known for its range of colors—and they’re on full display in this bright home on Rio Marin, a wide canal near the train station. An entire floor of a palazzo, sprawling over 2,000 square feet, it can sleep eight, making it a great space if you’re traveling with friends or family—plus it has rare (for Venice) access to a garden. Every room is painted a different color—light blue, green, or barely-there gray—and colorful modern artworks make the rooms pop. Be aware that this is a busy area—it’s one of the main routes into town from the train and bus terminals, so there are a lot of pedestrians.

If you are visiting Venice, Italy, for the first time, it is recommended to spend at least three to four days. This allows you to experience some of the most iconic attractions such as St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and the Rialto Bridge. You can explore the city’s network of narrow streets and bridges and enjoy its many historical monuments. Additionally, you’ll have enough time to visit nearby islands like Murano or Torcello or even take a day trip to Verona or Padua.

Venice is located approximately 248 miles (400 kilometers) from Rome. The journey by train typically takes around two hours and 45 minutes, with trains leaving regularly throughout the day. If you are driving, it will take about four hours to travel the distance in good traffic conditions.

One of the best neighborhoods to stay in Venice is San Marco. As one of the most iconic areas, it offers some of the best attractions such as St. Mark’s Square, Saint Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace. Other popular areas to stay in are Cannaregio and Castello which boast some beautiful sights, interesting canals and wide range of restaurants. For something a bit more authentic and off-the-beaten-track, try staying in Dorsoduro or Santa Croce for a truly unique Venetian experience.

This popular European city is the latest to increase its tourist tax to battle overtourism

airbnb tours venice

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its city-wide tourist tax, a slight increase of €0.50 (about $0.53) per night, as the city seeks to curb overtourism.

The new price of €3.25 (about $3.45) was implemented on April 1 as part of the Stays in Tourist Establishments Tax . The bylaw was introduced in 2021, when the tourist tax was €0.75 (around $0.80) per night, and gradually increased the tax each year through 2024. Now, if someone is staying in Barcelona for seven nights, the new total tax amount will be €22.75 (around $24).

“It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city,” deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said in March, according to Euronews .

The tax is added to a tourist’s accommodations bill when they stay at official tourist establishments in the city. The money goes toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure, such as improving roads.

Other popular European destinations, such as Amsterdam and Venice, also recently increased tourist taxes for similar reasons.

Are tourist taxes the future of travel? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

“The new and increasing tourist fees across Europe allow cities to fund measures to attract more vacationers, support the local infrastructure and businesses, as well as preventing damages from overtourism,” Tiffany Mealiff, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone , said in a statement to USA TODAY.

However, Barcelona visitors have had to pay a regional tourist tax since 2012, according to Euronews . This tax amount depends on a traveler’s accommodation type, costing more if someone is staying at a luxury hotel than an Airbnb.

Barcelona continues to reign as Spain’s most popular tourist destination. In 2022, Barcelona welcomed 9.7 million tourists , just slightly below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Barcelona City Council. However, tourists were found to be staying in the city longer than in 2019.

In 2022, the city also sought to cap the number of people in a tour group and ban megaphones by tour guides in an effort to curb the disruptive effects of overtourism.

Travelers planning their European getaway should be mindful of the additional costs that “are often not obvious beforehand,” according to Mealiff, as they plan their trip budgets.
