What is RV Trip Wizard? [2022 REVIEW]

RV trip planning can feel overwhelming.

You’ll probably be traveling hundreds of miles across many state lines.

Figuring out where to stay and where to stop and how much your trip will cost can soon turn into a headache. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can bring the joy back to road tripping with RV Trip Wizard.

What is RV Trip Wizard?

RV Trip Wizard is an all-inclusive trip planning tool. The annual subscription service allows you to design fully customizable road trips down to the last detail. Unlike other RV trip planners, this one shows you all RV parks, not just campgrounds affiliated with a specific membership program.

This unbiased inclusion means you can find the best and most affordable stops on your trip. If you have multiple memberships, you can rank them to find the best deals. RV Trip Wizard also shows you detailed information about all the campgrounds.

This includes cost, amenities, traveler ratings and tips, and more.

The app also lets you search for and add overnight parking locations such as Walmart or other big box stores, Casinos, and rest stops. You’ll save money by free camping in areas you’re just passing through.

Another useful feature is that you can add points of interest, gas station stops, and more for your entire trip.

It Knows Your RV, And Routes Accordingly

Before you plan, you will enter information about your RV, including height, weight, length, gas mileage, etc. The app then uses this information to help you plan the safest and most efficient route.

You can avoid low clearance routes and steep grades with just the click of a button.

The planning feature also shows you a driving radius so you know exactly how far you can travel in a single day. The information for your trip radius is based on details you enter in the preferences section.

No more hunting for RV parks only to discover they are too far or not far enough for your trip needs. You will save time with this slick feature.

One more feature worth mentioning is the cost estimator.

You can enter information regarding gas mileage and gas prices. The site then shows you a detailed estimate of what each leg of the trip will cost you.

It also includes the cost of your RV park stays, so you get an overall picture of what you can expect to spend.

What Does RV Trip Wizard Cost?

RV Trip Wizard is extremely affordable at only $49/year for the membership. You can also try it before buying with their 1-week free trial and free demo.

Included in this cost is access to the complete RV Life Pro Suite tools. This includes the RV Safe GPS app and Maintain My RV.

RV Trip Wizard User Review

RV Trip Wizard has received 4.9 stars from over 1,500 happy customers. Given all the hype, I tried it myself. It definitely lives up to all the great reviews.

RV Trip Wizard is easy to use and extremely convenient, especially when planning a longer trip. If you aren’t tech-savvy, have no fear, they have a demo that walks you through every step of the process.

Usually, planning a route for my RV trips is difficult and time-consuming. I end up wasting time looking up every individual RV park website. Not to mention trying to find a gas station that can accommodate our rig before we run out of gas while on the road. I no longer have these problems with RV Trip Wizard.

The best part is that you can easily add points of interest to the trip. Adding these fun stops along the way can make a long-haul trip much more enjoyable. Plus, we don’t have to worry about missing out on anything along the way only to find out later how cool it would have been to stop.

If you’re an RVer, you definitely need to add RV Trip Wizard to your trip planning arsenal.

How to Use RV Trip Wizard

You can use RV Trip Wizard on almost any computer, tablet, or smartphone. With the interactive map, you can add points of interest to your trip and camping and gas station stops.

Once you plan your trip, you can either print out detailed directions or send it to your GPS. The latter allows you to send your entire trip to Google Maps. This feature makes it easy to navigate on your smartphone.

RV Trip Wizard is Definitely Worth It

RV Trip Wizard is a dream come true for summer adventurers and full-timers alike. All the features it offers make the small annual fee well worth the cost. Not only will you save time and plan a better trip, but also you will probably save money by finding the best parks or free camping spots around.

Whenever I answer questions like these, I usually present the information and let you decide whether or not it’s worth it. I’m going to give you a more direct answer this time and say that in most cases, RV Life Trip Wizard is well worth the money.

The reason I say this with more confidence than ever before is that Trip Wizard is now bundled into a suite of tools called RV LIFE Pro . You now get 4-tools-in-1 for one very reasonable annual payment.

There are a couple of situations where RV Life Pro wouldn’t be worth it for you, which I’m also going to explain in this article. First, let’s discuss the benefits that make it worth the money, and then we’ll close with the exceptions.

There are affiliate links in this post – and we tell you why in the next section!

Why We Use RV LIFE Trip Wizard

RV Life Trip Wizard

Jennifer and I have been living our dream of the RV Lifestyle since 2012. We’ve always embraced a serendipitous style of travel and used to hit the road with only paper maps and a vague destination in mind. Planning, in many ways, was more stressful for us and took a lot of the fun out of the process.

However, when we discovered RV LIFE Trip Wizard (formerly known as RV Trip Wizard), we were quickly sold on the planning features that actually helped us travel more serendipitously. That may seem counterintuitive at first, but you’ll understand as you continue to read how the tool actually helps us not need to rigidly plan far ahead.

It is, of course, great for planning ahead, too! It takes the stress out of planning, which has led us to plan more than ever before. But when we do, we always leave plenty of room in our plans for serendipity to work its magic.

That being said, it’s important to note that we (RV Lifestyle) partnered and became affiliates with RV LIFE after we realized how useful it was to us and fellow RVers. We've been affiliates them for years now! We know first-hand how helpful it can be and since we are partners, our RV Lifestyle community can use a special discount code when signing up for membership! All the details are at the bottom of this post.

Why RV LIFE Pro is Worth It

rv trip wizard

I know you started off asking if RV Trip Wizard is worth it, but the real question now is “Is RV LIFE Pro worth it?” The reason for the change is Trip Wizard is now bundled with 3 other tools under the RV LIFE Pro umbrella.

The four RV Life Pro tools make it easy for you to discover, plan, go, and share your RV trips. The 4-in-1 membership includes:

  • RV LIFE Trip Wizard
  • RV LIFE Campground Reviews
  • RV LIFE App (RV-Safe GPS)
  • RV LIFE Maintenance Tracker

Just to be clear, you get all four of these tools in one with an RV LIFE Pro membership for a very reasonable price. I think most users would agree the price is actually cheap considering the value it brings. We’ll talk price at the end but first I want to explain why it’s worth the tiny investment.

Trip Planning Made Easy

rv trip wizard

These tools are specifically designed for RVers. You can customize your settings accordingly, including inputting your RV’s size and weight.

RV LIFE Trip Wizard plots safe routes based on your settings. For instance, it avoids any low clearances, steep grades, or weight limits based on your RV’s height and weight. It also only populates campgrounds that fit your settings.

It first shows you which campgrounds fit your criteria, and then it takes you to the next logical step: more info on the campground. Trip Wizard shows you more campground info with a click and works seamlessly with RV LIFE Campground Reviews.

My favorite feature of Trip Wizard is the travel rings on the map that show where you will end up at the end of the driving day. This is the part that helps us serendipitously decide what to do on the go based on what happens to be nearby.

Trustworthy Reviews

RV LIFE Campground Reviews are from real RVers like you and me. Unfortunately, public reviews like Google and Yelp can’t always be trusted. In too many cases, the “reviewer” is actually the one being reviewed!

However, RV LIFE reviews are very trustworthy. Fellow users leave reviews with the pros and cons of their experiences. Plus, they often include images so you can see the recent state of the campground. No more relying on the edited images on campground websites that were taken who-knows-when.

RV-Safe GPS

The newest edition to the RV LIFE sweet is a doozie: the RV LIFE app. RV LIFE is an easy-to-use GPS app, like Google Maps or Waze, but it’s specifically designed for RVs.

It will only plot routes and show gas stations, etc. that are acceptable for your particular RV.

You can use the app on its own by searching or entering a destination. Or, best yet, you can link it to your RV LIFE Trip Wizard and pull any planned trips into the app. The app then plots your planned trip on the GPS.

You can easily adjust the trip as needed. You can add or remove destinations, search for and add points of interest, and much more.

Maintenance and Fuel Economy Tracking

rv trip wizard

To top it all off, RV LIFE Pro helps you keep track of your maintenance and fuel economy with RV LIFE Maintenance Tracker. Simple graphics in the tool’s dashboard and emails let you know what maintenance is coming up, quickly and easily.

You can also track expenses by category and maintenance costs to see how well your RV is performing. You can track it by trip, season, or even over the life of your RV.

Another big plus is its fuel economy tracking. You can see how much gas your rig is consuming based on terrain, towing load, or generator use. This information is really helpful to have when budgeting for your next trip.

How Much Does RV Life Pro Cost?

RV Life Pro only costs $59 per year if you purchase the annual membership ( less than $5 per month ). The annual membership also comes with a 7-day free trial. The monthly subscription is $19.99 per month and does not include a 7-day free trial. BUT NOTE the discount code below!

In all honesty, just one of these tools is easily worth $5 per month, let alone all four combined. That is why I don’t hesitate to say that RV LIFE Pro is worth the money for most RVers.

And this is important – if you want to enjoy using all the RV Life Pro tools just add this coupon code: RVLIFESTYLE which gives you 25% off the price! If you already use RV Life Pro – your cost is already low and locked in.

–> Note that discount codes must be entered on a computer – if you try to sign up with the mobile app, there is no place to put the coupon code. <–

When is RV LIFE Pro NOT Worth the Money?

Hopefully, by now, you realize why RV LIFE Pro is well worth the money in most cases. But, of course, there are a couple of cases when it’s not worth it.

The first case is if you’re an anti-planner. If you’re a free-flying RVer that enjoys leaving everything up to chance, then these tools aren’t for you. (Although, even you could use the RV Maintenance Tracker and that’s worth $5 a month on its own.)

Keep in mind, though, that I’m not huge on planning yet I still love and use these tools all the time.

The other thing I’d say is not worth it is the monthly subscription. Well, let me rephrase that. The monthly subscription is absolutely worth the money, but you get a much better deal with the annual subscription.

If you know for a fact that you’re only going to plan and travel within two months, then the monthly subscription can save you a bit of money. But if you expect to use the RV Life tools for more than two months, then the annual membership is definitely the way to go.

Just wondering how how accurate the directions are since it can’t even get me from my house to the street I live on. I routes me over two ridges and through a deep ravine (all through forest) to a subdivision 1 mile away. I will find out beginning next week with a trip to Florida but will be prepared to switch to the phone if anythings seems fishy.

No, it is not worth the money. Why would I follow the RV Life route of 500+ miles when I know an RV safe route of 233 miles exists? Are they in cahoots with the gas companies? This is stupid.

RV Trip Wizard vs. Roadtrippers: What Planning Tool is Best?

Whether you live in your RV full-time or are an occasional weekend warrior, RV trip planning can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. It’s time-consuming and involves a lot of different logistics regarding finances, activities, and stops. Plus, researching an unfamiliar place — while fun — isn’t always straightforward and simple.

That’s where RV and road trip planning tools come in. One of the biggest benefits of the RV lifestyle today is the availability of seemingly infinite apps, websites, and other resources that make the once-tedious task of road trip planning easier and even somewhat enjoyable.

Two of the biggest names in this space are RV LIFE Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers, and it’s common for people to wonder which is best: RV Trip Wizard vs. Roadtrippers. We did the hard work, reviewing each in detail and then putting them through a head-to-head comparison.

RV LIFE Trip Wizard Overview

$19.99 per month or $59.00 annually; 7-day free trial

Standout features

  • Customized information based on your specific RV
  • Advanced Driving Radius
  • Cost estimator

Commonly referred to as simply Trip Wizard, RV LIFE Trip Wizard bills itself as “the best RV trip planner.” The “RV” in that tagline is important — Trip Wizard isn’t a general road trip planning tool but one explicitly designed with RV campers in mind.

Itinerary Planning

One of the most deservedly popular aspects of Trip Wizard is its level of personalization. Yes, it has all the requisite basic trip planning resources that many similar apps do, but Trip Wizard takes it a huge step forward and asks for specific information about your rig, such as its length, weight, height, fuel type, and even average gas mileage.

Trip Wizard then uses this information to give you hyper-custom recommendations, like the most fuel-efficient routes and campsites to accommodate your vehicle length. The app also tells you where to get gas based on your average fuel economy, and the “RV Safe Routes” feature even allows you to remove low-clearance obstacles and steep grades from your route altogether.

As you plan your trip, you can add stops for everything from gas stations to major points of interest and even quick grocery runs. This comprehensive trip planning gives you a realistic overview of how much time you’ll spend on the road (and off!). Plus, The Wiz cost estimator  calculates the approximate total of your stops, factoring in things like fuel and campground fees.

After you finalize your itinerary, you can save or print the complete directions or even send them directly to your device’s GPS app (like Google Maps). One thing to be aware of about Trip Wizard’s routing is that if you add waypoints after you’ve already finalized your itinerary, the app doesn’t always behave well. It sometimes moves the waypoints out of order, suggesting that you stop at one, then backtrack hundreds of miles to another.

The only way to avoid this, it seems, is to delete all waypoints and then re-add them in order. It doesn’t always do this, so it may be a good idea to wait until your itinerary and stops are finalized before actually creating the route within Trip Wizard. Also, always preview the suggested route and pay careful attention to where GPS is taking you!

Another excellent feature of RV LIFE Trip Wizard is its display of campgrounds. Many road trip planners are affiliated with specific membership programs such as Good Sam and Passport America and will show you only their associated campgrounds. This is not the case with Trip Wizard! Here, you’ll see ALL RV parks and other campgrounds. Having said that, you can integrate your memberships into the app, and it will then highlight those affiliated campsites with a special notation.

Trip Wizard also includes free parking areas like state rest areas, casinos, and Walmarts in search results. You can either add these to your route ahead of time or search nearby, which is especially helpful for those times when you just need a place to grab some shut-eye for a few hours but not a full-blown campground.

Pro tip: it’s smart to save some of these free places to your itinerary for those “just-in-case” times when you have a long driving day but aren’t exactly sure where you’ll want to pull over. There’s nothing worse than being exhausted and having no idea how far you are from the closest safe stop!

Roadtrippers Overview

$29.99 annually; free version with limited features also available

  • An extremely robust itinerary planner, with thousands of unique stop ideas and numerous ways to customize them
  • The ability to easily toggle destinations on and off as needed
  • Offline maps (with the paid version)

At its core, Roadtrippers helps you plan the best route for your trip in terms of both time and cost, plus offers suggestions for unique attractions along the way. Roadtrippers is specifically known for connecting travelers with quirky, off-the-beaten-path sights and activities.

Much like Trip Wizard, Roadtrippers calculates your distance and time between stops, as well as approximate fuel cost. It also allows you to easily add stops, called waypoints also like in Trip Wizard, along your route.

One of the biggest things you’ll notice right off the bat when comparing RV Trip Wizard vs. Roadtrippers is that Roadtrippers has a free version, whereas Trip Wizard does not. The free version of Roadtrippers is so robust that many people appropriately refer to it as “freemium.”

Roadtrippers Paid vs. Free

Of course, there are a handful of differences between Roadtrippers’ free and paid versions. The two main ones, however, are that you get just seven waypoints per trip with the free version, but a whopping 150 in the premium version, and the ability to download offline maps when you have a paid subscription.

Even in areas where you have absolutely no cell service, Roadtrippers premium allows you to download a map with turn-by-turn navigation directions. This is especially helpful in areas like national parks , which are notorious for having spotty cell coverage, but there’s a ton to explore.

Those two features alone are, understandably, enough reason for many people to upgrade. However, if you tend to take shorter trips or keep stops to a minimum when you’re on the road, and you’re not particularly concerned with having access to your maps when you don’t have service, the free version of Roadtrippers will serve you very well.

Let’s take a closer look at Roadtrippers’ itinerary planning capabilities. Whether you have the free or subscription version, one of its best features is the ability to toggle waypoints on and off and get automatic rerouting in live time. Better yet, Roadtrippers doesn’t delete a stop just because you toggled it off.

For example, say the weather looks dicey later in the day, but if it’s clear, there’s a stop you’d like to check out. If an hour before conditions have turned worse, you can quickly toggle that stop off, but keep it in your itinerary so you may be able to hit it on your way home. Without missing a beat, Roadtrippers also reroutes you, calculating a new time and distance, if necessary.

Another amazing thing about the Roadtrippers itinerary planner is its inclusion of unique, quirky, and off-the-beaten path stops. In addition to basics like restaurants, gas stations, and RV parks, Roadtrippers allows you to search for things like abandoned sites, filming locations, “World’s Largest…,” and “Offbeat Attractions.” You can even filter the results to see only those that are free or accommodate big rigs!

It’s also worth mentioning that the company behind Roadtrippers, Togo, also makes a few other wildly popular apps: Togo RV, Campendium, and RVillage. If you’re already a fan of any of them, this may be a selling point for you in the RV Trip Wizard vs Roadtrippers argument because Roadpass Pro bundles all four apps into one package for just $49.99 per year. There is no free version, but there is a 7-day free trial.

RV Trip Wizard vs. Roadtrippers: Which Is Better?

Both of these road trip planners offer robust suites of tools, and you’ll meet just as many people claiming that one is better than the other — and vice-versa. Ultimately, it comes down to deciding which one serves your personal needs better. With that in mind, here are some side-by-side differences when you’re looking at RV Trip Wizard vs Roadtrippers.

  • Trip Wizard is $59 annually or $19.99 per month and does not have a free version, whereas Roadtrippers has both free and paid versions
  • Both apps include downloadable maps for offline use
  • RV Life Trip Wizard includes customized recommendations and routing based on your RV’s exact specifications, while this feature is only available in the paid version of Roadtrippers
  • Roadtrippers’ ability to toggle waypoints on and off is a much more intuitive route-planning feature than the way Trip Wizard behaves when adding a waypoint to a finalized itinerary
  • Trip Wizard’s Driving Radius feature is perhaps its biggest single selling point over Roadtrippers, as the latter simply doesn’t offer anything comparable

One final thing: Many people think Trip Wizard caters slightly more toward RVers, rather than general road trip planning. To that point, Trip Wizard has far more campground and RV park reviews, and you have to search through two layers of filters to find the “RV parks” option in Roadtrippers. Having said that, if you do a lot of road tripping without your RV, you may find that Roadtrippers is a better fit.

Choosing the Right Road Trip Planning App

You really can’t go wrong with Roadtrippers or RV LIFE Trip Wizard, and both make great companions for a getaway in an RV rental . Choose any of our nearly 130 convenient rental locations and start planning your trip — it really is that easy!

RV Trip Wizard is hands down the best RV trip planner we have found. That’s why, after 10 years of using Google maps and various campground review sites to plan our travels, we’ve switched to RV Trip Wizard for all of our trip planning. In a nutshell, RV Trip Wizard is a visual map based travel planner that incorporates all of the planning, routing and researching tools required to plan a successful RV trip. As a result, everything you need is at your fingertips as you plan your trip, it’s easier, faster and better! And boy has it saved us a lot of time.

Let’s get this show on the road and take a look.

Find RV related Points of Interest along your route.

Rv trip wizard: 16 reasons we love it for trip planning, rv trip wizard makes planning a road trip easy and fast..

First and foremost, RV Trip Wizard is easy to use and includes all the tools needed to plan an epic road trip – from mapping RV-safe routes to finding the best campgrounds along the way. Now I can plan an entire trip in one place instead of jumping from one app for mapping, switching to another for campground reviews and yet another to find fuel prices or membership parks. It’s so much simpler.

Even better, you can add unlimited stops to each trip – perfect for full time RVers or planning a cross country road trip.

RV-safe route planner is based on your RV’s size and weight.

Relax and enjoy the journey! RV Trip Wizard plans an RV-safe route tailored to the size and weight of your rig so you don’t need to worry about low bridges or steep grades. That said, despite using an RV GPS I cross check my route with the Mountain Directory when we travel through mountainous terrain because the detailed descriptions of the grades let us know exactly what to expect on the road.

Customize your daily driving distance preferences to see where your next stop should be at a glance.

rv trip wizard driving radius overlay on map

Let’s say you like to drive around 200 miles per day. Simply set your preferred minimum, optimal and maximum daily driving distance. Then, as you plan, RV Trip Wizard will draw rings on the map to show where your next stop should be. Even better, you can set it as the crow flies or to actual driving distance.

RV Trip Wizard makes it simple to find and prioritize your RV membership campgrounds (and save more money).

One of the big reasons we all join RV membership clubs is for the savings. RV Trip Wizard lets you filter for specific membership clubs and rank your memberships so that you can use the ones that save you the most money.

  • Passport America Membership – Is It Worth It?
  • What are the Best 6 RV Membership Clubs for Full-Time RVers?
  • Good Sam Club Membership – Is It Worth It?
  • Thousand Trails Membership (What You Need to Know)

See campground info, ratings and reviews from within the map as you plan your road trip.

This is another incredibly useful feature. It only takes a second to click an RV park on the map and see exactly how it is rated. You can even set the filters to show only highly rated campgrounds. The integrated reviews are from RVLIFE Campground Reviews which has been our go-to RV park review site for years.

Additional useful info in the park information box includes: campground membership affiliations, a satellite map link, cell data availability, and average temperatures.

RV Trip Wizard estimates your costs as you plan.

Planning RV road trips is fun! Calculating how much to budget, not so much. Now I can enjoy planning and let RV Trip Wizard estimate the cost for me. Awesome!

Easily customize your RV trip based on your own travel preferences.

The filters make it simple (and fast) to find campgrounds that meet your needs without having to wade through info on park after park that doesn’t offer what you are looking for.

  • Want full hookups? Set the filters to only show campgrounds that have full hookup sites.
  • Have a pet along for the ride? Show only pet friendly campgrounds.
  • Need to have a playground? Filter by RV parks with playgrounds.

Export or share your RV trip route and itinerary to GPS, email, Excel or Google maps.

Once you’ve planned your perfect RV road trip, you can export your route to GPS or Google maps. The email option includes a day by day itinerary with all the campground contact info, map location links and any notes you have added for each stop. Even better, you can send your itinerary to your friends or even share a link to the full route map.

RV Trip Wizard shows you road grades and elevations along your route.

rv trip wizard map road grade

This is one of my favorite features and one that can be critical for RVers. When you’re driving a large RV you definitely want to be aware of any steep grades you may encounter.

Drive time is calculated according to the travel speed you specify.

It’s no secret that RVs are not built for speed. In fact, between rest stops, detours and just a slow driving speed we average around 40 mph when we travel. When Google maps says we’ll be there in three hours I just laugh. RV Trip Wizard lets you set your average miles per hour and estimates drive time accordingly. Now I actually know how long each drive will take based on our driving speed. Pretty handy right?

RV Trip Wizard saves a ton of time.

It’s amazing how much time RV Trip Wizard saves. From seeing where your next stop should be on the map, to filtering for campground amenities, to seeing campground reviews and routing an RV-safe route, it drastically reduces the number of steps required for planning a trip.

Find the cheapest gas stops from the map as you travel.

Another money saving feature! To see current gas prices at each gas station near your route, simply right click on the map and click Check Fuel Prices. Now you know the cheapest places to get gas so you can save more money!

RV Trip Wizard makes a great RV travel log.

At the beginning of each year, we start a new trip to track our RV travels. I add each stop and make notes about what we liked and what we didn’t. At the end of the year, we have a day by day log of our travels along with a map of our route showing each stop and any notes we added. I like how it works so much that I’ve gone back and made a yearly RV Trip Wizard travel log for each year since 2012 when we started RVing full time.

Access your itinerary from anywhere with the web based app and cloud trip route storage.

RV Trip Wizard is web based. There’s no need to install an app or save your routes locally. Simply log on from any web browser to access all of your trips.

Add custom stops to your trip.

Have a super secret boondocking spot or a favorite Harvest Hosts location that you want to add to your route? Next destination moochdocking at a friends? Simply create a custom stop on the map.

Of course, sometimes you’ll want to know where the local Camping World is. Maybe you’re looking for rest stops. Or a Flying J. RV Trip Wizard has over 57000 Points of Interest so you can easily filter and find exactly what you’re looking for.

Want to try RV Trip Wizard yourself?

Good news, there is a free 7 day trial so you can check out all the cool features and make sure that it is right for you. For us, it makes travel planning so much easier and faster that it is definitely worth the $65 per year. After all, as full time RVers, we plan a lot of trips.

That’s it for now. Hope you enjoyed. See you somewhere down the road!

My husband and I are full time RVers in a 45ft 5th wheel toy hauler. I use RV Trip Wizard to plan our route. It has made my trip planning so much easier since I can filter out campgrounds that cannot accommodate our trailer. The ability to check reviews and to go to the campgrounds' websites from the app is also extremely useful. I recommend RV Trip Wizard to other RVers all the time.
If you are worried about low bridges on your trip or where the best, low cost parks are, worry no more because this App is absolutely the best RV trip planer out there. We've tried them all and this ones smokes them all. Spot on! If you have a smart phone or a tablet, RV Trip Wizard works with either, we absolutely rely on it and would not leave our home without planning our route with this tool first. Highly recommend it…
We took a 3 month trip last year and I looked for a good trip planner. I tried winging it with google earth and researching the internet at first. Then I found RV Trip Wizard. I thought I try it. Just a few hours in to planning our trip I was hooked. It has everything I need to plan our trips. Way worth the small price. And the great part it's got better since last years trip. They keep adding and making it better all the time. I've got this years about ready to go and a few small side trips already planned.
This is a super tool for planning RV trips (or any trip) with a menu of superb amenities. Road hazards, campgrounds, fuel stops, dump stations, points of interest, rest stops, and restaurants can all be included in your trip plan. The system calculates fuel costs (and when to fill up), camping costs, and meal costs based on your input for each trip. You can adjust and add or subtract on the fly as you go. You can have active, temporary, and archived trips. A simple search/research tool allows you to add almost anything to your temporary plan, and then make it active with export to email and your phone or other device. Wouldn't leave home without having used it in advance.
I have used this website for both short and long trips and when I say long I mean long (Fairbanks AK. to Alabama). The customization features and the easy to use features make this a MUST HAVE for any RV enthusiast that travels a lot. It can plan your entire trip and the export features make it easy to use with your GPS. With it being a website, it makes it easy to access and make updates or changes. Definitely recommend this!!
Recently purchased RV Trip Wizard and once I got the routine down...was very pleased with the trip planning package. It flawlessly guided us on a trip from Houston to Bar Harbor Maine and will soon be using it to make our return trip in a couple of weeks. Thanks RV Trip Wizard team and keep the updated features coming. Traveling in a 2005 Newmar Essex 45' Class A motorhome.
I have been RVing for over 20 years and RV Trip Wizard is by far, the best trip planner I have found. I use it for all trips, including a 6 month trip across the country and back, visiting National Parks, Presidential Libraries, CA Wine Country, etc. It is simple to navigate, simple to search and provides all needed info for each park, including photos, park details, park websites and phone numbers. When we leave on a trip, we print out the map with park info and we are good to go. The other great feature is to be able to change destinations along the way with ease. There are much much more good info available to include park reviews, mileage, park costs, fuel costs, fuel & miscellaneous costs that are tracked. You can adjust costs based on actual vs your estimates as you go, making it a very accurate trip log. I love it.
RV Trip Wizard is a great planning tool to use. I use trip wizard to plan all my rv group trips. It's easy to use All the parks are listed and have great reviews of them. So much information available for your trip planning I highly recommend trip wizard.
If you travel in your RV and go to multiple parks, then the RV Trip Wizard is for you. This is the only tool you will need. You can research all the parks, make reservations, keep all your info in one place, plan your routes, keep all your notes, plan day trips, etc. It is the best planner I have found so far!
I found RV Trip Wizard to be very helpful in planning my last trip, 3000+ mile over 30 days. The tie into campgrounds.rvlife.com especially made it a much smoother process.
I'm using your site for the second year in a row and just love it. The price is perfect for those of us seniors on a budget. I do wish you could include rest stops that allow over night stops or places for boondocking while on long drives. Maybe even include Pilot and Flying J stations along driving routes. No matter what you do, we do love this program. Thank you.
When I found this app years ago, I fell in love with it and told all of my camping Friends about it. Your upgrades to it have been Superior, I enjoy using this. Keep up the great work!
I used RV Trip Wizard to plan a 3 week road trip from California to Tennessee, it worked great, finding places to stay, mapping out the best route, the daily travel distance guide, gas stations etc based on the type of vehicle we were driving. Being able to find points of interest. It was a great trip and I will definitely use it again if I have another trip to plan out.
We are full time RVers and find RV Trip Wizard incredibly useful. We are constantly moving and always use this great tool to plan our trips. And we love that it saves our trips since we have been so many places that we are losing track of where we have stayed. Very thankful for RV Trip Wizard!
Phenomenal RV trip planner. Easy to setup and use, great data on routing and camp ground/RV sites. We used RV Trip Wizard exclusively on a 7000 mile 6-week trip last summer and this planner allowed us to change plans on the fly and find and call ahead for places to stay. Re-routing is fairly easy but many times it wants to take you to the "fastest" or shortest route which sometimes we didn't want to do, but still easily managed.

RV Trip Wizard Review

Review: Should You Buy The RV Trip Wizard Trip Planning Program?

If you follow this channel you already know that Siren and myself have been testing the RV Trip Wizard during our 1,400 mile “Escape the Humidity” Road Trip from Orlando, FL to Petoskey, Michigan. While I took on the task of evaluating the program’s interface, Siren’s responsibility was to check the accuracy of the results.

In this Road Trip episode we’ll reveal our findings and let you know what we like about the RV Trip Wizard and what needs improvement. You’ll also get to know more about Siren and what she does when she’s not traveling on a Prevost motor coach.

I’ll state upfront that I consider RV Trip Wizard (RVTW) a useful trip planning aid as it combines various functions into a single interface. While all of the features of this program can be found is various apps, just the convenience of having various functions included in a single package makes it noteworthy.

With that said, the RVTW still very rough around the edges and I can only hope the programmers get to work and repair issues such as incorrectly placed or mislabeled mile markers for rest areas and fuel stops and a somewhat buggy interface sooner than later. During the month-long test, while I did receive an email notification that some features have been refined, the accuracy of the results needs to be addressed. I’ll add that I’m a bit miffed that although the user enters the RV’s dimensions, the map route generated is a basic Google Map route and not one that is considered to be RV friendly. So, while this is a useful trip planning program and one that I’ll continue to use, there’s room for improvement.

I also found the linked campground reviews to be helpful, but again, I found a few bugs. As an example, I’ll use the popular Fort Wilderness campground located at Disney World in Florida. As you can see in the photos below, the review ratings are not standard in the various views. Since I’m familiar with this campground and know that it’s one of the most desirable in the USA, I was a bit miffed by this and will chalk it up to a bug.

reviews of rv trip wizard

I’ve been a Garmin Basecamp fan for some time since it’s free to Gamin GPS owners.  Basecamp has been a pretty good mapping tool.  One of the things I do like is I can take completed routes and load them directly to my device.  When Jean Painter made the Facebook post on RV Trip Wizard I initially thought it was just another mapping tool but after reading some reviews and watching a YouTube review of the product I immediately saw it offered something I didn’t have.

In creating most of my new routes, at the end of each day’s travel, there are two things that are at the top of my list; have we travel 350 miles (+/-) and can we find a good campground.   Following that, maybe find a Pilot/Flying J or something with truck islands and a good place to eat.  After watching the review, I thought RV Trip Wizard offered this and more so I took the plunge and spent the 39.00 (yearly subscription) for this web-based product.

In my initial setup of the product, in upper right corner click on the gear ‘Account Settings’ then click on ‘Trip Preferences’.  If you click on the ‘Driving’ option you can select ‘Hours Per Day’ or ‘Miles Per Day’.  I choose miles per day option and put my normal 350 and then in the Inner Radius, I entered 100 and Middle Radius, I entered 300.  (If you choose this mileage option the radius rings you will see on the main screen are for informational purposes only and have no effect on the route you create.)  In the ‘Memberships & Favorites’ options, you can select your campground memberships.   Then when I entered my starting location (Home), I saw a radius circle at 100 miles, another at 300 miles and a third at my 350 miles per day point.  (These radius circles are ‘as the crow flies’ and not actual miles).  Now select your favorite fuel and restaurant under the ‘POI’ menu option on the main screen.  Now as you focus in on the third radius ring and start zooming in, you will see all these different places on your route start appearing.  There are more options and preferences you will need to make to customize the tool to your liking.

Once you have selected your campground for the first night and added it to your route, you can now change the radius circle focus from Home to this campground by hovering over it on your route and click the ‘circles’ in the upper right corner of the campground title display.  Repeat this process for each subsequent nightly stops until you’ve reached you destination. Another helpful option is to set the max height of your coach.  When you click on ‘Trip Preferences’ the first screen to display is ‘RV Info’.  When I entered my height, I added 1 foot to give me a little cushion.  So now when you start zooming in on your route you will start seeing yellow ‘diamond-shaped’ traffic height warnings pop up to give you warning of possible low-clearance.

I created a trip from home to Mission, Texas in about 1 hour.  Then spend another hour fine tuning my route and finding out how to create a downloadable (.gpx) file for my Garmin device.  To load the .gpx file to a Garmin, you will first need to have Garmin POI Loader tool installed.

Conclusion:  I’m not a big fan of downloadable POI files since most are obsolete the day you down-load them.  Since RV Trip Wizard is a web-based product, I believe you will always be getting the most updated POI’s available.  I see RV Trip Wizard as just another tool in trip planning.  Just like I use Google Earth to view new campground I’ve never been to before.    I will probably continue to use Basecamp as my primary mapping tool because of the big volume of waypoints I’ve already established within Basecamp and the easy exporting of routes to my Garmin device.  I will use RV Trip Wizard as a way of finding good campgrounds, fuel and restaurant stops for my route.  Not sure at this point if I’ll renew my subscription to RV Trip Wizard after this year.

How Much Does RV Trip Wizard Cost?

The great news is that this amazing tool only costs $59 a year! And the even better news is that there’s a 7-day free trial. So you can check out all of the features before committing for an entire year.

For this price, you also get access to RV Life Maintenance, a one-stop shop for keeping your RV in tip-top shape.

Why Should I Use RV Trip Wizard?

If you’re an RV enthusiast, then RV Trip Wizard is a great way to plan your journey and keep your family safe. With this program, you can avoid routes that are hazardous for RVs, saving you time and worry. Plus it’s super easy to use! It integrates with Google Maps and other GPS options to give you turn-by-turn directions. So, no more getting lost trying to find your destination – RV Trip Wizard has got you covered! So, if you’re looking for an easy and safe way to plan your RV trip, this is it.

Why RV Trip Wizard is Better than Google Maps?

Well, for starters, it takes into account your RV’s length, height, and weight restrictions – something Google Maps can’t do. This added information means you won’t end up on a road that isn’t suitable for your vehicle. Plus, RV Trip Wizard makes it easy to find all the amenities you’ll need while on the road. Everything from RV Parks, to gas stations, to attractions along the way. That saves you time scouring the web for all that info. And it’s even better because RV Trip Wizard will adjust your arrival time based on your RV’s speed – something Google Maps won’t do which could lead you to end up arriving much later than planned. Driving an RV in the dark can be more dangerous. Not to mention setting up your campsite in the dark is a real pain that also disrupts other RVers. So, if you’re planning an RV trip, I’d definitely recommend using RV Trip Wizard over Google Maps. It’s way more accurate and makes planning much easier!

Why RV Trip Wizard is Better than an RV GPS or Trucker GPS?

When compared to a traditional RV GPS or Trucker GPS, RV Trip Wizard proves itself as the better option. Not only is it more affordable than shelling out hundreds of dollars for an RV GPS and investing in regular updates, but it also offers features that go far beyond what these devices can do.

One of the key features that sets Trip Wizard apart is the campground filters. These allow you to easily narrow down your search for the perfect campsite, based on any criteria that are important to you. You can filter by RV length, pet friendly campsites, and more! So if you’re looking for a specific type of campground or location, RV Trip Wizard has got you covered.

RV LIFE Pro Banner

Using Campground Filters

When you’re planning an RV trip, this tool can be your best friend. The campground filters are particularly helpful when it comes to finding the best prices.

You can rank memberships through Good Sam, Passport America, Thousand Trails, Escapees, and dozens more so that you get the most bang for your buck. No memberships? Don’t sweat it. RV Trip Wizard shows parks regardless of affiliation, so you can find the best prices available.

The great thing is that all of this information is right at your fingertips. You don’t have to waste time researching or calling around—all the details are just a few clicks away.

Other RV Trip Wizard Features

This RV trip planner has so much to offer! Not only are there 57,000 points of interest and 20,000 campgrounds across the United States, but you can also customize your journey however you’d like. You can set a driving time and distance that works best for you—so no matter how long your trip is, you won’t have to worry about overdoing it and driving too far.

You can also easily see how far away each point of interest is from your destination or route, which makes planning much easier. And the best part? This trip planner is web-based, so you don’t have to download anything special—just open up your browser and you’re ready to go. If you want, you can even export the information to your favorite GPS app on your phone.

A Bit More About Features

RV Trip Wizard has tons of features. Here is just a bit more about some of the most useful ones.

Area Attractions

Never miss an amazing sight that was just minutes from your drive again. With this route planning tool, you can easily view attractions on the map. With just a click of a button, you can learn more about places you might like to stop and add them to your route.

Overnight Parking

Sometimes on a long drive you might not want to pay to stay at a campground when you’ll just be there one night. Joel and I often stay at rest areas or Walmart parking lots overnight. RV Trip Wizard makes it even easier to find places you can sleep overnight. No more hoping for the best only to see a “No overnight parking” sign posted when you arrive.

Gas Stations

When you plan your gas stops in advance you don’t have to stress about running out of gas or being unable to get into the lot. Since you can enter your gas mileage it also makes it simple to know just how far you can go before a fill-up.

Need a quick pit stop or an overnight snooze? RV Trip Wizard makes it easy to find rest areas all along your route. Sometimes getting out and stretching your legs is so necessary on long cross-country road trips.

Dump Stations

RV Trip Wizard also shows dump stations. So if you are a boondocker , this tool can help you too.

Staying safe while on your RV trip is just as important as having fun! There are a few simple things you can do to help ensure that your travels go smoothly.

Next, it’s important to remember to travel at a safe speed . Not only will this reduce your chances of having an accident but it will also make sure that you don’t miss out on any of the sights along the way!

Finally, it’s best to try and arrive at your destination during the day whenever possible. This is especially true if you are planning on staying overnight in an unfamiliar area. Traveling in daylight will help you to be more aware of any potential dangers so that you can keep yourself, your family, and your RV safe.

RV Trip Wizard vs. Roadtrippers: Which RV Trip Panner Is Better?

For those not in the know, RV Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers are two popular trip navigation and organization apps that make plotting your next vacation a breeze. As with everything in the RV market, RV trip planning apps are highly competitive.

This is especially true when you throw in subscriptions or memberships, free trials, tiered packages, and everything else. When it comes to that level of competition, the differences lie in the subtle details—the kind of details that make or break an app.

These apps aren’t just for the retired RV lifer who spends the majority of their time on the road. They aren’t RV versions of existing navigation apps, either.

While a navigation app plots a path between point A and point B, offering suggestions along the way, these apps are RV-focused, with a lot more hiding under the hood than a traditional navigation app has to offer. However, only one can reign supreme. Or can it?

Read on for our opinion on which is better: RV Trip Wizard or Roadtrippers.

Are There RV-Specific Navigation Apps?

RV Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers qualify as RV-specific navigation apps. But, they are also so much more. They are two of the most popular RV-specific navigation apps on the market and today, we’re looking at both of them to determine which one is right for you.

Plus, the good thing about apps is that you can have as many as your smartphone will hold. It’s simple enough to give them both a try.

Some traditional navigation apps have RV navigation features or, at the very least, the ability to input RV-specific destinations the app will then pull up along the route.

However, the difference between Siri, Google, Waze, etc., on one end, and RV Trip Wizard or Roadtrippers on the other, is the RV lifestyle nature of the latter two.

Plus, the two RV planners on our comparison today are not the only RV-specific apps out there. They’re just two of the most popular apps for RVers! Apps like RV Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers focus heavily on navigational tools and destinations that apply exclusively to RVers.

These include campgrounds, your RV specs (this matters a lot more than you might think, at first), gas mileage specific to you, driving radius, cost estimators, amenities, campground specs, boondocking, and even user ratings and reviews.

What Is The Best RV Trip Planning App?

RV Trip Planning App screen shot showing planned route and campgrounds

Of course, it’s all subjective when it comes to comparing anything. This is especially true if you have a history with one app and not the other. It’s also true if one of these two apps happens to have a specific feature that you just love.

There’s nothing wrong with that. But, we still have to do our homework here and lay out the best of the best that both apps have to offer.

The most glaring difference between the two is the fact that the RV Trip Wizard app is very RV-specific while Roadtrippers is broader. The latter includes hotel listings along your route and also has a more “outdoors exploration” feel to it.

In our comparison, we’ll cover the features of each app, who it applies to most, the price of membership (if applicable), how each app works, and ease of use. By the time this comparison review is done, you’ll know exactly which app is right for you.

Now, there is no such thing as the perfect app, either. An app on a smartphone or tablet is software, after all, and software doesn’t always cooperate when we want it to. Some smartphones run apps better than others as well.

An RVer running RV Trip Wizard on an iPhone 14 Pro will probably have a much better time than someone running Roadtrippers on a 2017 Motorola.

The overarching goal here is to have an app that can help you plan a two-day trip up the West Coast or a three-week journey across the continent (including all the associated stops and costs), without a hitch.

Only the best apps are capable of doing that, whether you’re running it on a laptop, a tablet, or a smartphone.

What Is RV Trip Wizard?

Imagine condensing an RV maintenance guide, trip destinations, gas mileage, navigational aspects based on the dimensions of your RV, boondocking opportunities, campground reviews, traveler ratings, points of interest, and stops into a single app.

That’s RV Trip Wizard. Of course, there is more to it than that, but getting too specific would take up unnecessary space.

It’s not only a downloadable app on the iOS and Google Play Stores , but it’s also accessible on PC or Mac by going directly to the RV LIFE site. There are a lot of things this app covers, along with plenty of good reasons RVers love the app.

RV Life Trip Wizard Features

  • Customizable routing and driver preferences
  • Avoids tolls, low-clearance places, unsafe side roads, tunnels, and specific highways
  • Create, view, and send routes
  • The app is deeply intertwined with other, helpful RV Life apps
  • Works with Apple Car Play
  • Discover campground-specific amenities, from specific hookup types to average internet speeds (both Wi-Fi and cellular data)
  • Compatible with Microsoft Excel, some calendar apps, and other GPS apps
  • Save and organize all of your trips in one, accessible place
  • Generate total costs for the duration of an entire, round-trip route
  • Includes expense tracking
  • Maintenance tracking
  • Includes campground reviews

That’s a pretty broad overview of everything the RV Trip Wizard app has to offer. The app is clearly an RV-specific app. In fact, the app is specifically for RVers with RVers behind the design and functionality of the app. Who knows more about RVing than RVers?

The maintenance tracker and campground reviews are two features that really stand out. For one, neither of them are navigation-specific. However, keeping track of your maintenance will keep you on the road and not on the side of it or in an RV repair shop.

For two, the inclusion of campground reviews provides invaluable information before you plot out your trip. While looking at it from a navigational standpoint, It’s easy to miss the critical nature of those two feature additions, both of which round out the app.

How Does RV Life Trip Wizard Work?

The nature of an app’s popularity starts and ends with ease of use. It doesn’t matter how information-rich it is or how many tasks it performs. If it’s a complicated mess, people won’t use it.

In RV Trip Wizard’s case, the usability requires a small learning curve, mostly because the app does a lot. However, even the least tech-savvy among us will find it simple and intuitive. The app is accessible on any PC, Mac, iOS, or Android device.

Put simply, once you have your login information in place, you’ll have the option between choosing a new trip to create or pulling up a previously saved one.

If you’re creating a new one, the app allows you to be as complex or simple as you want. It even allows you to manually add in stops or points of interest the app doesn’t automatically generate along your chosen route.

You create your trip and timeframe and you can get as creative as you want—all the way down to checking projected weather patterns on the day of your arrival.

It can get a little complicated throughout, mostly if you stop and input every bit of information imaginable. The app even allows you to enter the average mph that you drive.

What Is Roadtrippers?

On its face, you might assume that Roadtrippers is an RV-specific app. However, where RV Trip Wizard is central to RVing, Roadtrippers is more of a broad look at travel in general.

For instance, Roadtrippers is just as viable for someone taking a road trip in a family car as it is for someone doing the same in an RV.

Roadtrippers has GPS navigation built into the app, which is highly convenient. A lot of outdoor, exploration, camping, and adventure apps include plenty of destinations and locations, but you have to use a separate GPS app to get to them.

Like RV Trip Wizard, Roadtrippers has a lot of features to delve into.

Roadtrippers Features

  • The app includes hotels and interesting places to stay the night
  • Includes fuel and rest stops
  • Find your favorite places to shop along the route
  • Access popular categories and use “pin drops” along your route to add them
  • Also includes places to camp
  • The most important aspect of the app focuses on outdoor adventure destinations
  • Includes sports and wellness facilities and stops along the way
  • Includes alternative transportation means and contacts
  • The app’s map is designed with a high degree of interactivity
  • Includes a pro and a free version, with the latter including more than enough to satisfy most
  • Includes articles associated with points of interest, along with pre-determined itineraries
  • Includes route sharing with other accounts, friends, and in general
  • Includes photo sharing and reviews of destinations

Browsing through our bullet points, it’s easy to see the fundamental difference between RV Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers. Roadtrippers is clearly designed for a less direct and constrained trip planning experience, along with plenty of customization and fun, random stops along the way. It’s not necessarily RV-specific.

In fact, the app includes hotel stays along your route, as well as other transportation opportunities that have little to do with an RV.

However, alternative transportation is still very useful, especially if you’re in a motorhome and aren’t towing a car to use for trips into surrounding towns and cities.

How Does Roadtrippers Work?

Roadtrippers works similarly to RV Trip Wizard and most GPS navigation apps. You don’t need a membership option to use the app, though you should create your login information before you get started. Login info is required to start plotting out trips.

Fortunately, you don’t need to pay to access the more fun parts of the app. Using it is not too complicated. You simply type in your destination and, before you select the option to plot the route, add in as many categories of pit stops as you want.

Once you start the route, you can always go back in and add pinpoints along the way. The only really noticeable difference between the paid and unpaid versions is the ads. If you pay for a Pro account, you won’t have to worry about ads anymore.

RV Trip Wizard Vs. Roadtrippers Comparison

With a mix of RV-specific and more generic categories in the above list, the RV Trip Wizard covers more than Roadtrippers. However, Roadtrippers is also busy adding features, such as an RV Safe Driving category.

While Roadtrippers will find campgrounds for you, they lack a robust reviewer feature. In other words, you won’t get much information from other RVers on how good or bad the experience was.

RV Trip Wizard utilizes RV Life Campgrounds to compile lists of reviews under each campground.

On the other hand, RV Trip Wizard lacks the robust, add-and-remove features that make Roadtrippers so compelling. For example, if there’s a point of interest worth stopping at, simply drop a pin on that spot using Roadtrippers. If you change your mind, remove the pin.

It’s not so easy with Trip Wizard, as setting everything up in the beginning is the better and simpler route.

Can You Use Google Maps For Motorhomes?

You can use Google Maps for motorhomes just like you can use a stovetop to heat a 5-gallon turkey fryer. It’s there, but it’s not the best tool for the job by any means.

Google will get you from point A to point B, just like Siri and Waze, or any other GPS navigation tool in your smartphone app arsenal. But these apps do not take into account the weight, height, and width of your RV, so they could take you on a route where your rig won’t fit.

However, RV Trip Wizard and Roadtrippers are far more specific in their layout and applicability. The former is laser-focused on RV campgrounds and stops along the way, while the latter is focused on the overall adventure aspect, without leaning too heavily in the RV and campground category.

One distinct and important feature that Google, along with most other GPS apps, lacks is an RV safety navigational feature. Google won’t do nearly as well navigating you through areas with low-lying bridges and places unfriendly to RV travel.

Are RV Trip Planner Apps Worth It?

RV Life and Roadtrippers logos side by side

RV trip planners are definitely worth it, especially if you spend a lot of time on the road, in your RV. Not only do they provide an in-app GPS experience, but also a host of RV/outdoor/adventure experiences that you can add in.

Avoiding non-RV routes, planning out fuel stops, and saving routes are all highly convenient necessities for RVers and an RV trip planner places those conveniences in the palm of your hand.

Frequent RVers will get the most out of them, but part-time RVers will find plenty to love and use as well.

RV Trip Wizard Vs. Roadtrippers: Final Thoughts

If you approach your trips from a hardcore RV standpoint, there’s no alternative better than RV Trip Wizard . RoadTrippers might be the more fun and spontaneous option for some light RVing and the occasional vacationing.

As you all probably know by now, we at RVBlogger use RV Trip Wizard all the time and highly recommend it to our readers and subscribers. In fact, we know the owner personally, who is kind enough to offer our subscribers a 25% discount with promo code RVBLOGGER25 .

The good thing is, since Roadtrippers doesn’t require a paid subscription , it’s a great idea to add it to your app tool bag, right next to Trip Wizard.

You get the best of both worlds with the power of precision, customizable RV navigation, and a splash of simple, intuitive adventuring. Why not get the best from both?
