Who Are The Star Names In The American Express?

After the Sony Open in Hawaii saw a payout of $8.3m, there’s an even larger prize fund on offer as the PGA Tour heads to California for The American Express.

A purse of $8.4m is available at the tournament that takes place across three courses - the Pete Dye Stadium Course, La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Tournament Course. The winner is set to take home $1.512m, while the runner-up will earn $915,600.

That’s the same payout that was available for several tournaments last year, including the Honda Classic, Houston Open and RSM Classic and falls just $600,000 short of the $9m available at the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2024, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic .

The purse also represents an increase of $400,000 from last year’s tournament, when Jon Rahm lifted the trophy and claimed $1.44m. This year’s fund is also $2.5m higher than the purse from just five years ago, highlighting the huge sums in the game since the emergence of the circuit Rahm has since signed for, LIV Golf .

As well as the attractive financial incentive, there are also 500 FedEx Cup points available to the winner, as well as world ranking points to play for.

Below is the prize money payout for The American Express.

Patrick Cantlay takes a shot at the 2024 edition of The Sentry

Patrick Cantlay finished runner-up at the 2021 tournament

The return of the PGA Tour to mainland US after two tournaments in Hawaii has attracted a strong field despite The American Express not being one of this year’s signature events.

The standout name is undoubtedly Scottie Scheffler , who is top of the world rankings. He makes his first start since finishing T5 at The Sentry, while two more players in the world’s top 10, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele , also play. Cantlay, in particular, will be confident of success after he finished runner-up at the tournament in 2021.

Other big names to look out for include the winner at The Sentry, Chris Kirk , PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Eric Cole, former World No.1 Jason Day and Tony Finau , who dispelled speculation he would join Rahm as a LIV Golf player in a social media update before Christmas.

Seven-time PGA Tour winner Billy Horschel also plays, along with Rickie Fowler, who enjoyed a significant career resurgence in 2023, but missed the cut at The Sentry. He’ll be hoping to get firmly back on track here.

Team Europe Ryder Cup heroes Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre are also in the field, while Will Zalatoris competes too, as he continues his recovery from back surgery. The American missed the cut at the Sony Open and he will be looking to make it as far as the weekend.

Another player who has been beset by injury in recent times is Daniel Berger , but after 18 months out with a back injury, he makes his long-awaited return to action this week.

Rising star Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee, who earned his PGA Tour card after a successful 2023 on the DP World Tour , and Team US Ryder Cup player Sam Burns , also play.

Elsewhere, former champions in the field include Si Woo Kim, Jason Duffner, Andrew Landry and Adam Long, while there are also appearances from Sony Open winner Grayson Murray, PGA Championship hero Michael Block and two-time PGA Champion Justin Thomas.

Who Won The American Express In 2023?

Last year, Jon Rahm followed up victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions with another triumph at The American Express, when he beatt Davis Thompson by one shot to claim his second victory at the tournament. The Spaniard does not appear in this week’s field as he has since joined LIV Golf.

Who Is Playing At The 2024 American Express?

Despite the 2024 edition not being one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, there is still a strong field, including World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, and two others in the world’s top 10 – Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Other big names appearing include Shane Lowry, Billy Horschel and Sam Burns.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 American Express

The easiest way for Jon Rahm, a man very much frustrated by how slow the Official World Golf Ranking reflects his recent play , to assure he jumps to No. 1 would be to win every tournament he starts. And if that sounds preposterous, well so does the fact that the 28-year-old Spaniard entered the week having recorded eight top-10 finishes in nine worldwide starts since last August, including three wins in his last five starts—and still only sits at just No. 4 in the ranking.

Yet come Sunday at The American Express, Rahm once more took things into his own hands, shooting a final-round 68 at PGA West’s Stadium Course in La Quinta, Calif., to beat rookie Davis Thompson by one shot and claim his second PGA Tour title in as many starts after winning two weeks ago at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

RELATED: The $153 million question—PGA Tour on LIV Golf and where it got the added money for purses

Given that Rahm started the day tied with a 23-year-old playing in just his seventh event as a PGA Tour member, his prospects for victory seemed reasonable high. In his favor was the fact that the second of his now nine career PGA Tour titles came at this event in 2018 (shooting a 22-under 266). Yet surprisingly while this was the eighth time Rahm had been tied for 54-hole lead or held it outright, he had only converted two of them previously into wins.

PGA West: Stadium Course

This was Thompson’s first time atop a PGA Tour leaderboard with 18 holes to play, and had the former University of Georgia All-American pulled out the win, it would be a financially momentous accomplishment. Thompson’s career earnings on tour to date were $611,871, so even the runner-up check he earned after closing with a three-under 69 ($872,000) still surpassed that.

Rahm, meanwhile, grabbed the first-place prize money payout of $1.44 million from an overall purse of $8 million.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut this week at the American Express. Come back shortly after the finish at PGA West’s Stadium Course on Sunday and we’ll update the list with individual names and dollar figures.

2024 American Express money: Here’s how much every player (except Nick Dunlap) made

Nick Dunlap won't get a penny this week.

Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images

How was Nick Dunlap planning to spend his Saturday night while sitting on the lead in a PGA Tour event, as an amateur?

“Probably turn off my phone,” the 20-year-old said after his third-round 60 that gave him a three-shot lead. “My girlfriend just landed, so go hang out with her, do some laundry. I’m still trying to figure out this whole two-weeks-on-the-road-laundry-thing with the Tour. So, I’ll probably go do that, and get a nice dinner and try to get some sleep.”

Earlier on Golf Channel, after shooting 60 to grab a three-shot lead at the American Express , Dunlap joked he might dine at the Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse next to his hotel. Not bad for a college sophomore.

“I went from riding in the back of a Sprinter van at Alabama to, I’m driving an X5 around the whole week. It’s freezing cold [in Alabama], and I’m out here playing in perfect conditions and great golf courses.”

If you think Dunlap is spending some of his expected winnings this week? Think again.

Of course, there are 67 other pros who made the cut and will benefit from Dunlap’s status.

The American Express 2023: Prize Money Breakdown and Winner’s Payout

pga tour american express purse

The year started with a bang for golf fans with the Sentry Tournament earlier this month. The excitement was soon followed by the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. Now the PGA Tour travels to California for the third event of the year, the American Express. With its huge purse and competitive field, the event is sure to keep golf fans on the edge of their seats for the four days.

The defending champion, Hudson Swafford, will not be at the event. The pro defected to LIV Golf last year and is therefore banned from participating in PGA Tour events. This means the event will see a new champion take hold of the trophy.

The event sees a huge field of 156 players. the American Express is one of two Tour pro-am events held during the year, and the pros play with an amateur for the first three days. The players also rotate between three different courses for the first three rounds.

Among those competing for the title is Jon Rahm , who earlier this month beat the competitive field of the Sentry TOC . Joining his is also, World Rank 2 Scottie Scheffler, and Tony Finau.

Nick Dunlap earns no money despite winning The American Express

American Express prize money, payout info: Nick Dunlap enters the PGA Tour record books but earns nothing due to his amateur status.

pga tour american express purse

Nick Dunlap entered the record books at The American Express by becoming just the eighth amateur to win on the PGA Tour .

Dunlap , 20, became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in '91.

He also set a new tournament record score of 29-under par, and he is now the youngest ever winner of The American Express, which was formerly the Bob Hope Classic.

  • Who is Nick Dunlap's girlfriend?

Sadly due to his amateur status, Dunlap does not earn the first prize of $1.5m .

That goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Dunlap earns no money.

Scroll down to see how much all the players earned at The American Express...

Doors open for Nick Dunlap, but he gets no money or FedEx Cup points

Dunlap also does not receive any FedEx Cup points as he not a PGA Tour member.

However, the win most certainly opens up plenty of doors for him.

pga tour american express purse

Dunlap won the US Amateur in 2023.

He also won the US Junior Amateur in 2021.

Dunlap and Tiger Woods are now the only two golfers in the history of the game to have won a US Amateur, US Junior Amateur and a PGA Tour title.

If Dunlap decides to remain an amateur golfer then gets into The Masters, US Open and The Open as the US Amateur champion

Should Dunlap make the decision to turn professional this season, however, he would be out of The Open at Royal Troon.

He would get a spot in the US PGA though, and regardless of whether he turns pro or not, he earns an invite into The Masters.

Dunlap will also have starting berths in all of the signature events on the  PGA Tour  for the remainder of 2024 if he turns pro.

He would become fully exempt on the PGA Tour for two years, too.

We will have to wait and see what Dunlap decides to do moving forwards.

The total prize purse for The American Express was $8.4m .

Houston Open payout distribution 2024: Prize money, purse

What is the prize money on the line at Memorial Park for the 2024 Houston Open?

By Cody Williams | Mar 31, 2024

Texas Children's Houston Open - Final Round

The predominant narrative coming into the 2024 Houston Open was, naturally, about the No. 1-ranked player in golf, Scottie Scheffler. Not only was he the heavy favorite for this week's PGA Tour event, but he was looking for his third straight win this season after capturing victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship.

After the first three rounds of action, Scheffler entered Sunday's final round in great position to accomplish the historic feat, sitting tied for the lead after 54 holes. But it was a logjam atop the Houston Open leaderboard coming into the final round with chasers like Thomas Detry, David Skinns, Alejandro Tosti, Stephan Jaeger, Taylor Moore and Akshay Bhatia, among others, all trying to overtake the World No. 1 for a crucial PGA Tour win.

They were all also vying for the biggest share of the Houston Open purse by earning a nice prize money payout for the week. How much money were they playing for this week, though? We have it all broken down with a full payout distribution and everything you need to know.

Houston Open purse 2024: Winner's prize money, total purse

The winner of the 2024 Houston Open will take home $1.638 million in prize money this week on the PGA Tour while also winning a standard non-signature event prize of 500 FedEx Cup points. The total purse at the Houston Open in the 2024 season is set at $9.1 million this year, which is an increase from the last time the tournament was played in the fall of 2022. It may not be the same money we saw at the API or THE PLAYERS or that we will see at The Masters , but it's still a nice haul for a week's work on the golf course.

Houston Open payout distribution by finishing position in 2024

Here's a look at the full 2024 Houston Open payout distribution for every finishing position, all the way from the winner's prize money of $1.638 million to the 83rd and final player to make the cut and play the weekend, who will take home $16,289.

The winner of the Houston Open is the only player who will take home seven figures in prize money this week, but all of the Top 22 finishers at Memorial Park will clear the six-figure mark this week on the PGA Tour.

There were a ton of players who made the cut as 83 players were tied for 65th or better after the first two rounds, which stretches out the purse for this tournament a bit at the bottom of the finishing positions. Even still, though, it's a fine payday for a good four days of golf, especially for those who didn't finish strong and stayed at the bottom of the leaderboard.

If amateur Nick Dunlap wins The American Express, what happens to the money, FedEx points?

pga tour american express purse

So with amateur Nick Dunlap among the leaders at this week's The American Express PGA event, a logical question would be what happens to the money?

Dunlap, a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Alabama, will receive no money at this week's event wherever he finishes after Sunday's final round. Amateur players are not allowed to collect any prize money, and there is no avenue for him to retroactively declare himself a pro to collect the $1,512,000 first-place check.

So with that in mind, where does that money go?

Here is the answer.

The money basically just gets paid out as if he didn't exist.

20-year-old college sophomore playing with the pros this week at The American Express

In other words if, for example, Sam Burns finishes alone in second, Burns would get the entire first-place prize money, and so on down the line.

If there was a tie for second, let's say between Burns and Patrick Cantlay, the first- and second-place money would be combined and they would split it. In other words, there would be no playoff to determine a solo first-place money winner.

And that, of course, holds true for wherever Dunlap finishes. If he finishes in fifth place, then the sixth-place finisher would get fifth-place money, etc.

FedEx Cup Points, on the other hand, do not trickle down. In a scenario where Dunlap wins and Burns finishes second. Burns would get second-place FedEx Cup points (300) and no one would get the 500 FedEx points that go to the champion.

Another caveat for Dunlap is that he does not get the privileges that a winner of this event would get, like entrance into the rest of the season's full-field PGA events and a two-year exemption on tour. However, if he were to turn pro at any point during the year, he then would reap those benefits. In other words, if he turned pro in May, he would then be eligible for the rest of the full-field PGA events moving forward if he would win at The American Express.

2024 Valero Texas Open One and Done picks, purse, sleepers, field: Top PGA Tour predictions, power rankings, expert golf betting advice from DFS pro

Hero Image

The 2024 Valero Texas Open is set to begin on Thursday, April 4 at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. The 2024 Valero Texas Open field projects to be star-studded with several players looking to get their final tuneup in before the Masters. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is listed as the 15-2 betting favorite in the latest 2024 Valero Texas Open odds. Other top contenders in the field include Ludvig Åberg (12-1), Hideki Matsuyama (18-1), Max Homa (18-1), Jordan Spieth (18-1), and Collin Morikawa (20-1). The total 2024 Valero Texas Open purse is $9.2 million, with the winner's share coming in at $1.66 million. The tournament champion will also earn 500 FedEx Cup points.

Before locking in your 2024 Valero Texas Open one and done picks,  you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say.

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings,  and he's been RED-HOT on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks .

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The Result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

His hot steak continued at the Players Championship, where McClure again recommended using Scheffler (if was still available) and Xander Schauffele. Both players were in contention until the end, with Scheffler coming out with the win and Schauffele finishing in second place! Then, at the Valspar Championship, McClure recommended using Cameron Young, who finished in second place, in OAD pools.

Now, McClure has set his sights on the 2024 Valero Texas Open and just revealed his optimal One and Done picks. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool.

We can tell you that one of McClure's favorite One and Done picks for the 2024 Valero Texas Open is Hideki Matsuyama. The nine-time PGA Tour winner has climbed to No. 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and he notched a win at The Genesis Invitational. Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters and has the skillset to win against elite fields. McClure expects him to make a strong run at the title this week in San Antonio.

McClure is also targeting another golfer in his PGA One and Done picks who is listed as a 40-1 longshot in the latest Valero Texas Open Open odds.   Picks like these could be the difference between winning your One and Done pool or going home with nothing. You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before locking in your pick.

Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour, Texas Children’s Houston Open

Since turning professional after his historic victory at The American Express , Nick Dunlap has struggled on the PGA Tour .

In his five events since, Dunlap has missed two cuts, finished dead last at Pebble Beach , and failed to contend at both the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

But he did not struggle during the third round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open .

Dunlap carded a 7-under 63, one stroke off the course record matched by Tony Finau on Friday. In doing so, the former Alabama star soared up the leaderboard and into contention.

“All I tried to do today was play perfect with what I had, not necessarily like perfect golf but getting the easy ones up and down, not three-putting,” Dunlap said of his third round.

“You’re not going to make every putt, and you’re not going to hit every wedge close, but from where I was trying to play a perfect round of golf, I feel like I did that.”

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion made seven birdies to zero bogies, as he now sits at 8-under for the championship.

Dunlap looked more comfortable out there. Perhaps that welcome sight can be attributed to playing practice rounds alongside Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. He played with Scheffler once again on Tuesday at Memorial Park.

“I think [Scheffler] plays practice rounds the same way he plays tournament rounds,” Dunlap reasoned.

“He obviously doesn’t miss very many golf shots at all; he’s putting a lot better. He does everything well that you’re supposed to do and is also obviously very good under pressure.”

Undoubtedly, the 20-year-old has learned a lot from both Scheffler and Burns, who teamed up at the Ryder Cup this past fall. But the biggest thing Dunlap has learned thus far is to focus on the little things because the margin for error on the PGA Tour is razor-thin.

“They’re really good, they’re really good,” Dunlap said of his fellow PGA Tour professionals.

“I’ve got to do the little things better, whether that’s the little up-and-downs. I think out here everybody thinks that they hit the super hard shots well, and they sometimes do, but it’s the easy shots, and the lag putts that they don’t stress about, they hit ‘em to kick-in [range], and they move on, and that’s something that I’ve got to get better at.”

PGA Tour Newcomer Nick Dunlap Ascends Leaderboard at Houston Open, Overcoming Previous Challenges

F ollowing his historic victory at The American Express, Nick Dunlap’s journey on the PGA Tour has been marked by challenges. In the five events following his professional debut, Dunlap faced setbacks, missing two cuts, finishing at the bottom of the leaderboard at Pebble Beach, and falling short of contention at both the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

However, amidst these struggles, Dunlap found a glimmer of hope during the third round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

Dunlap’s performance was nothing short of remarkable as he carded a 7-under 63, trailing only one stroke behind the course record set by Tony Finau earlier in the tournament. With this stellar round, the former Alabama standout surged up the leaderboard, firmly establishing himself as a contender.

Reflecting on his third round, Dunlap emphasized his focus on playing flawlessly within his capabilities rather than striving for perfection in every shot. He expressed satisfaction with his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and minimize mistakes, leading to a bogey-free round highlighted by seven birdies. As a result, Dunlap currently stands at 8-under for the championship.

Dunlap’s newfound comfort on the course could be attributed to his practice rounds alongside seasoned professionals like Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. Drawing inspiration from Scheffler’s consistent approach to both practice and tournament play, Dunlap acknowledged the importance of attention to detail and composure under pressure.

Having gleaned invaluable lessons from his peers, including Scheffler and Burns, Dunlap recognizes the criticality of mastering the fundamentals on the unforgiving stage of the PGA Tour. He underscores the significance of excelling in seemingly routine aspects of the game, such as short game proficiency and precision in putting, which are often overlooked but pivotal for success at the highest level.

In the midst of his ongoing journey, Dunlap’s experiences serve as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and the invaluable wisdom gained from seasoned professionals in the competitive arena of professional golf.
